Da kine
As Manti Mania continues to build, we are reminded that four years ago, the star of Punahou’s state-title victory was a quarterback named Cayman Shutter.
Wonder what happened to that guy?
* * * * *
For an abbreviated (for UH) season, there sure have been a lot of injuries. Conditioning, training and practicing will have to be evaluated this offseason. Or maybe it’s just bad luck.
The o-line will get another tweak with Kapua Sai taking over at left guard this week in place of Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, who keeps aggravating that injured knee. Winchester-Makainai is a gifted athlete, much like Laupepa Letuli. But like Letuli, Winchester-Makainai has struggled to remain healthy.

First! Aloha Kakahiaka
Go Buff n Blu! Beat Kahuku this Friday!
What happened to Letuli?
Fort!
Truegreen – that’s going to be a helluva game.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Letiuli had a brief tryout with the Dallas Cowboys. He’s now an entertainer.
But the guy was strong, nimble and there was a time he was showing us his high-jump skills. Such a talent.
I often wondered if Tommy Heffernan was an upgrade from Mel DeLaura or not. I don’t remember as many injuries but to be fair, JJ didn’t do alot of hitting in practice.
I would like to see our players improve upon conditioning next year. It amazed me when Chow said they couldn’t consistantly run a no huddle as the Offensive players get tired.
I like Tommy Heffernan.
DPK – yup! The only time I can wear my gear without looking snobby, other than Punahou Carnival lol.
Ohayoooooooogozaimasu!!!!!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All. 🙂
Happy Countdown Day!!!!
30 left to go!
Enjoy! 😆 😆
morning again gang!
top 10?
guess not
dpk – speaking of jojo .. long time no see
Good to be top 10 on Thanksgiving eve on Warrior Beat.
I like Tommy. I think he does a good job.
Trouble is UH only has two full-time conditioning coaches. Tommy is the head of the entire program. I think the football team really needs a full-time conditioning coach.
There are shortages everywhere.
Some are being addressed.
For instance, Brian Wong was serving as trainer for football and men’s volleyball. Now he’ll be doing football year round.
#2 Kahuku vs Punahou… should be good!!
Stephen – that’s good news for the program. now if we can figure out a way to expand the training table. was thinking about your piece on inside access and how the boys have to stretch the scholarship checks to eat.
Hauoli Lā Hoʻomaikaʻi kākou

Loa:
I think a lot will depend on what happens with next year’s practices.
There are discussions about having practices in the morning. Thing is, that really limits a team to just a breakfast training table.
The way it is now, with the NCAA’s fruits-and-nuts program, all players can get a continental breakfast and, after the afternoon practice, a training-table dinner. That just leaves players on their own for lunch. Or breakfast, if they want additional stuff.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Wonder if SS was examined by a neurologist – anyone that took so many shots to the head and body – I would get a second opinion rather than take chances of a simple medical clearance.
ST, Tommy is a great dude. You’re 100% right, there isn’t enough training staff and the weight room is no where large enough to accommodate a legit D1 football program. It’s pretty impressive with what Tommy has done with the resources available.
He’s done an incredible job developing the strength and size of players like Leonard Peters, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Nate Ilaoa, Travis Laboy etc. These guys entered UH as bean poles and left as monsters. Ilaoa’s size was partially attributed to not being able to run after of multiple knee injuries.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!! Okay, due to some situations beyond our control we’ve had some change in plans for the Christmas Party. Sooooo….

ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
To you and yours Happy Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t mind inviting some players to join in a meal but I think that is not allowed. I remember at one time there was like an “adopt a player” program where a player could go to your house to have a home cooked meal and quiet place to study. NCAA rules are so strict now, they probably will ban Thanksgiving turkeys for players in the future because of growth hormones in toms and hens!
chad ikei comes to mind.
as it is guys preparing for the combines go to him and come out looking, lifting, running, and jumping like an nfl prospect. so why does it take for them to go to his private “school” to do that?
technique and knowledge is how.
hire this guy already.
Stephen – thanks for the feedback. sounds like afternoon practices may be better meal wise. are the student-athletes provided post workout drinks? do thr fruits-and-nuts apply to the off season as well? whoa – sorry for all the questions, starting to sound like .. 🙂
…and well, happy thanksgiving !!!
Al:
From what I’ve heard fourth hand (or was it fifth), there had been talks with Ikei. Not sure if they progressed, though.
But, with UH, there are issues about money and, of course, procedure.
Is there a new AD yet?
al – was thinking of chad too. after all someone who can bench press triple his body weight must know something about training and nutrition. maybe lori o. can give some nutrition tips too?
Loa:
While it was a kind gesture, I think a company donated orange juice for one of the post-practice drinks. Someone told me that orange juice doesn’t settle very well after a workout. I wouldn’t know, since 1) I don’t really like orange juice. and 2) what’s a workout?
I want them to hire Chad so I can hear that chant: Ikei, all day.
Or is it: All Day, Ikei.
Think I dyslexic I’m.
Al, I agree, even if it is for an abbreviated year (realize that football training is year round) but when the strength and conditioning is needed most in preparation for the year, then have TH work with him to maintain during the season. If money is an issue, which I am sure it is, be creative to get more for the young men without breaking the already depleted bank.
I know there appears to be several cases of a specific injury, which we can discuss after the season. It’s either freakish bad luck or wear-and-tear or maybe a technique problem.
so was today’s opening lines a subliminal message that the former punahou signal caller will get the nod this weekend?
it would probably behoove the warrior staff to name cayman shutter the qb this weekend. at least it’ll show that they are pulling out all stops to end the season on a high note. it would give rise to something to look forward to this saturday. anticipation is always good for the gate.
Never got chance. When (if) Cayman is given a legit chance, I think he will shine.
UH by two touchdowns if Higgins plays most of game or entire game.
back to ikei…not only did miano do a great job at kaiser hs this year but, a lot could be contributed to what ikei has done with the athletes there. i hear he donated 35k worth of training equipment at kaiser hs as well as a lot of volunteer hours.
Hey, I’d play all three.
There just comes a point in time when you just gotta reward people for practicing hard all year.
Or, even better, I’d design a play involving all three. Think of the possibility of a three-QB formation. It would be like Hawaiian-style football.
Miano did a good job.
But after he lost to Nanakuli, I called him a couple of times to congratulate him on a good season.
No callback.
He finally called. I said: “Oh, you would have been THAT kind of head coach?”
A few posts ago someone mentioned that folks like Sam Boyd Gaming may want to help both UH and their interest by doing something around that favorite past time for many from the islands:gaming.
Maybe set up a few real tables around the concourse and have people make a donation to secure gaming chips, they play the games and when they “win” cash in the chips. The highest ten get a chance to go and toss a football through a target (this is to get away from “chance”) they all win something but the top winner gets a round trip for two to LV.
I bet the “fans” who have stayed home but like Vegas will show up just for the “chance” to make believe gamble.
All win, UH gets the “donation”, LV lovers get a chance to “gamble”, 10 people get to win something and the players get people to the game.
It’s a lot of work, but “easy money” is hard to come by.
#7 & #15 a strength and conditioning regimen does not guarantee results, especially if the person is just going through the motions. to get noticeable improvement, the person must want to do it, do it harder, and do it longer. Tommy H. probably puts out a great program for a football player (i think he does the wahine volleyball team, and they are on par with any team in the country) but ultimately the onus is on the player. the player must have the will, the drive to improve. richard torres is a great example of a player that worked hard off the field and earned a starting position on the field. spencer smith, another safety, is another example of a player with exceptional work ethic. every year there’s probably a few of those guys on the team. to be great, the team needs all members to demonstrate a highly dedicated work ethic off the field. i highly doubt that is happening at UH. but i feel tommy is an improvement over mel d. viriliter age!
I’ve covered Cal Lee, Tony Sellitto, Merv Lopes.
Great coaches all.
But when they lost, sheesh, Houdini act.
I remember having to drive to Saint Louis from Aloha Stadium to hunt down Cal after a game.
Pomai,
UH-23
UNLV-21
I’m picking UH again this week.
gobows:
You’re right about Richard Torres. I remember when he was planning to walk on. He was at his wrestler weight, and he was one of the few who was honest about his 40 time, which wasn’t very good.
But that guy really worked himself into being a very good player and athlete. And he got faster.
on another note…
cayman shutter has had his share of life’s ups and downs.
championships, successful hs career, popularity.
gifted athlete.
comes from a successul heritage.
likes to party.
gets nabbed by the law.
where’s number 15 on his back.
yup, there are some comparisons to he and colt.
hope he finally gets a chance other than in a mop up role to prove his worth.
I wonder if the team’s nutritional needs are being met in terms of assisting with repair and recovery? Many D-I athletic programs have a full-time sports nutritionist on staff, along with their own dining facility. Of course that means more $$.
Does Chad Ikei have a degree? I believe that’s a requirement to be employed in that capacity at any university. I know that he’s a certified S & C coach, as are Coach Tommy and his staff.
When I was 9, I was a huge baseball fan. I remember after the season ended, I was thinking, I miss baseball so much I would even watch the A’s and Angels play.
This season has been difficult. But I know what it’s like in March, when I’m bored out of my mind, and that’s when I know I’ll miss any sort of UH football game.
Enjoy the last two games, folks.
It would be great for higgins to play the entire game, but it seems that the play calling leaves much to be desired so his talent is wasted on predictable plays. Though I am not as expert at football like many of the bloggers posting to this site,it seems that SS doesn’t seem to have the instincts higgins has for the game. I don’t think higgins got a fair chance at qb. and, he got pulled from the game for some unknown reason so that SS Could secure the loss for the team… norm chow is so quick to dismiss everyone, except SS who has had many chances to perform, but has failed each time. Hoping they have a better play calling strategy next game.
And if the proper adjustments are made…
You scold your kid for doing something bad in public. A stranger comes up to you and says to stop doing that and that you’re a terrible parent. How well would that go over?
Howzit Tsaikos!
Happy day before Thanksgiving. The stuff-your-face time comes a day early for me – “dessert tasting” party at work. 🙄 😀
GO KAHUKU! (Actually, whomever’s playing Punahou )

Normally I do not read post on blogs, however I would like to say that this write-up very forced me to take a look at and do it! Your writing style has been amazed me. Thanks, very great post.
magnificent publish, very informative. I ponder why the other experts of this sector do not notice this. You should continue your writing. I am confident, you’ve a great readers’ base already!
Hi there, You have done an incredible job. I will definitely digg it and in my view recommend to my friends. I’m confident they’ll be benefited from this website.
I would enjoy those last 2 games if it were televised nationally on the main-land. Let’s hope NC sees the light and starts Cayman. Go Warriors !!
I can testify orange juice doesn’t settle well for me period.
I’ll drink oj at home only because I enjoy the comfort of my own toilet to use.
st…true on that.
no matter what, i too, enjoy watching uh football.
i enjoy it because thats what i’ve done for ** decades now ever since i sold lineups at the old termite palace to less 1,000 fans on a saturday night.
green on green – rainbow
green – white
green – black
single wing – full house t
hula t – spread
rns – pro set
no matter…i just enjoy cheering for the home team. hoping for a victory.
i enjoy the uh games for the pure sense of pride for my state and never to put down any shortcomings that we may have on the field.
after all, who’s perfect around here?
…nuff said!
I still see several people that post on Warrior Beat that don’t totally understand how rough Chow has it with the roster situation this year…
From UH’s website, UH has 31 freshmen & red-shirt freshmen, 27 Sophmores, 31 Juniors, and 15 seniors. That’s extremely young for a FBS roster. 15 Seniors shows an inexcusably poor job of prep recruiting by McMackin.
Game 1 (vs USC) starters, before most of the injuries happened:
Offense: 2 Fr, 3 So, 6 Jr, and ZERO Sr –7 had little to no starting experience.
Defense: 0 Fr, 5 So, 5 Jr, and ONE St — 8 had little to no starting experience.
** 6 starters are in their 1st year attending UH
Friday’s game vs Air Force Starters (after many injuries):
Offense: 3 Fr, 4 So, 4 Jr, and ZERO Sr — 8 have little to no starting experience.
Defense: 2 Fr, 2 So, 4 Jr, and 3 Sr; — 7 have little to no starting experience.
** 7 starters are in their 1st year attending UH.
*By comparison, the 2007 roster had: ZERO Fr, 1 So, 9 Jr, 12 Sr starters. 12 of them were full time starters in 2006 and most played significant minutes in 2006.
* Having this many newcomers starting is very unusual. Typically there’s only a couple starters that are newcomers
** Boise St, who is in a major rebuilding year (lost a ton of key players and coaches from 2011), didn’t have one newcomer in their starting lineup vs UH in October. It shows how strong the player development is within the program. BSU still can’t get very many top level recruits even with their success. BSU is considered to have a young team with 63 Fresh/Soph (57% of roster). What’s amazing is that there are only 2 True Seniors, 1 True Junior, and 7 True Sophmores on their roster. Everybody else has redshirted. That means all the team is more physically and mentally mature than most other teams. Which has been a key reason why they are good every year without getting 4 or 5 star recruits. It’s all about structure and stability.
Our football alumni series continues with Jon Weber. Weber was an offensive tackle on the 1968 and 1969 teams that went that 13-6-1. An outstanding lineman, Weber was named to the UPI 1st Team Little All-Coast Team in 1969 and played in the 1970 Hula Bowl.
http://www.nakoa.org/2012/11/football-alumni-jon-weber/
Chow should consider not hitting or doing certain drills in practice– lots of well known successful college teams do not hit in practice– NFL style– to save players for games– and they have more depth than us.
#60 Former UH Athlete:
Your first paragraph is very diplomatic!
Thank you for the analysis.
Jmxxxx ~ Was my invitation to the face-stuffing sent out? Prolly just as well. I prefer the BP over the other stuff anyway. I’ll let you be my proxy today and so you may add 1 vote for the BP.
Got my Wounded Warrior jersey ready for the game. Got the word *FREEDOM* emblazoned on the back and the number 50 to represent all us old guys over the hump. I won’t mind if my number isn’t called until we have to take a knee.
Adjustments,play calling Sure!!!

Thanksgiving !!! Hawaii 24 Unlv 20
Doesn’t matter if you run the Run n Shoot, spread option, pro-style, pistol, wishbone, or flexbone. If you have this much inexperience starting, it’s going to look ugly. Even with good QBs the Run n Shoot looked pretty ugly when there’s inexperience. Tim Chang in 2000, Tyler Graunke in 2005 (before he was benched for Colt), the QB carousel of 2008, Moniz in 2009 (after he took over after Alexander got hurt) all sputtered with the run n shoot (with far better WR talent than 2012).
I would like to send out my mahalo to everyone who answered my message. Humbled by all the best wishes for my bro with all the positive thoughts I am sure he will get better. Thanks all
Great Morning All! (unless you one turkey!)
66. This offense isn’t any less more inexperienced than last year. So obviously the offense matters.
If you ask me, we should have upgraded at Oline, WR, RB, and QB considering SS is supposedly better than Graves. Stutz, Miah, Harding are veterans now. O line was awful last year and guys like Lefotu, Shigematsu, Winchester Makainai have more experience.
We took 100 steps back on offense.
FUHA,
Agree with much of what you say.
B$-You may not have the 4 & 5-star recruits but by results that is either an indictment of the star-rating system or testament to their coaching staff’s ability to spot talent when they see it and not when they are told to see it.
Lots of comments posted here about their “system” and their off-season “commitment” to training but, as I’ve noted before, 22 former Broncos made it onto NFL rosters at the start of this season. Sometimes I’m watching games and keep hearing names on BOTH teams that bring back memories of guys who made plays that killed Hawaii in past games.
As you indicate, you can’t win the race without the horses.
Former UH Athlete
Sputtering is one thing.. being blown out and shut out in games is another. To me, anyway, that has more to do with coaching. I’m still waiting for some good answers to Ted’s questions last night on Call the Coach.
Except for last week, in the first half against at team that doesn’t pass at all, we haven’t even been competitive in the FBS at all. Our ranking confirms that.
former uh athlete…i hear you.
i’ve been beating that same bush for months now.
it is true what you say.
our class spread as you depicted looks more like that of a program that just started this year rather than one that has been around for this long.
but hope abounds as the chow staff is strong on recognizing the importance of recruiting in modern day college football. i have been impressed by the type of players that they were able to recruit in such a short time. i am more impressed with the type of players that have committed and those that we are currently pursuing.
i firmly believe that this program will turn around in a couple of years.
Al,
I do hope things turn around..hate seeing them getting bashed like that.

Healing Energy to the ailing…
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Where’s the adjustment during half-time? The other teams have been making adjustments. But, to many of us we don’t see the adjustment. All we hear all the time is SS give us the best opportunity to win. You wouldn’t question this logic?
Too easy to blame the former coaching staff. I say the current staff has failed. My opinion.
#60 Former UH Athlete:
Thanks for your great explanation but still painful to watch game after game losing by +40 points.
I know many of us were looking at more or less a 6-6 season. Even if we lost we’d hope we be in game by a TD.
I’m sure everyone was not disenchanted with a lost last week to Illinois or Air Force because at least they played very competitive game.
That’s all we ask for. Not a Wipe Out every time you catch a wave.
71 MIH What was the question Ted asked last night?
Answer was…?
@81. During call the coach, Ted asked Dr. Chow to state specific improvements the team had made over the season.
I didn’t watch the 2nd half of AF game since I had to leave for Illinois game at SSC
But after I saw that SS came in and had ‘0’ pass completion was disheartning.
To many of us this has been accepted by others as “a sacrificial or throw-away season” due to the complete make-over of Warrior Football. It is too often stated that nothing much was left in the cupboard by the previous staff. And yet the previous staff was able to coach-up their athletes to where they could at least compete. This season there seems to be this lacking. People are saying that they are freshman or sophmores. And never started. The assumption being that is why we are being blown out. Throw them under the bus. What about the coaching?
#60
You hit it right on!
As for the Ikei thing, it’s all money, he would sacrifice making less at UH (IMO) than his private business. And when has he ever worked with a Division-I team? Never. So the job requirements will not be met by him. Sorry, he has great reputation, but won’t be the guy b/c of many reasons! And on a side note, how many of his UH trained players are in the NFL?
ST-What are the specific injuries you mention? #35
Also, whenever there is a down year, the s**t rolls downhill. How about the fact that Norm has NEVER been a head coach! I would think the evaluation needs to start at the TOP, not at all the inefficiencies that UH has.
It seems the fans are more embarrased by how we perform than the headcoach.
Sports fanatics are redundant. The names just change.
In 2008 and 2009 there were some that blamed June Jones’ recruiting for the struggles and leaving Mack with the popular “empty cupboard” and now same thing.
The theories stay the same, the names just change.
Does anyone know what website the uniforms from this weekends game will be on? Trying to get one for my dad as a Christmas and retirement present from the Air Force. I looked on Hawaii Athletics and Rainbowtique but couldn’t find it.
Hilo-Warrior.
It still comes down to “old school”. Beat your man, make a play.
http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/43197/stanford-shows-oregon-its-own-brand-of-old-school-football
Hilo….I saw the link someplace. They were selling for $75.00. I think only number available was #50, with Freedom on back. I’ll try and find it for you.
If you get 500k per year to coach football, I don’t want to hear any excuses. Period. End of story.
As I’ve said before, my dog could have coached the team this year and likely would have produced the same record. Oh, but to be fair to chow, my dog is one smart buggah. He knows how to go outside when he has to make poop. The best thing about my dog coaching this year: UH would only have had to pay him one T-bone steak per game, win or lose.
Can there be a legitimate reason why SS should be playing on Saturday? With his acknowledgement of having several headaches (un-reported) following games this season, it would behoove the coaches/medical staff to err on the side of caution rather than take a chance on injury. He’s a gamer, but it wouldn’t be worth a possible head trauma.
I think this is one of the most vital information for me. And i am glad reading your article. But want to remark on few general things, The site style is perfect, the articles is really great : D. Good job, cheers
I think you can check back on the hawaiiathletics.com site after the game and place a bid for one of the actual game jerseys. No names on the back. Alternating: Service, Commitment, Honor, Duty, etc.
I no longer see the generic $75.00 replica jerseys on the Rainbowtique site
Hilo….there’s a site called shopping.com…..type in wounded warrior jerseys…not sure of authenticity, or quality.
You can definitely see your enthusiasm within the paintings you write. The sector hopes for more passionate writers such as you who are not afraid to say how they believe. All the time follow your heart.
When I looked at the roster entering into the season, I thought 5-7 was going to be a good year with who was returning and how many new faces were slated as starters in the 1st game.
Since people still can’t figure out how experience in one system is vitally important… Looking at Utah St’s roster and preseason depth chart:
* 10 Jr/Sr starting on offense — All 11 starters have at least 2 years in Gary Anderson’s system.
* 8 Jr/Sr starting on defense — Only one red shirt Freshman starting — ZERO newcomers starting at Utah St. (UH had 7 newcomers that started on Friday)
Same story at La Tech… 14 returning starters at start of year, most are in their 2-3rd year in Dykes’ system.
* 10 Jr/Sr starting on offense
* 10 Jr/Sr starting on defense
Same story at SJSU…
* 10 Jr/St starting on offense — all 5 OLinemen have been at SJSU for at least 2 years
* 8 Jr/Sr starting on defense
The common thread with SJSU, Utah St and La Tech is that the vast majority of their players have been in the system for at least 2 years and there are very few players left from the previous coaches roster.
One thing that has stood out about norm since the beginning is that he is a prideful guy, a class act when it comes to being accountable. Old school. Feels a sense of responsibility for how things have not worked out. This is why I am hoping he will do the right thing come the new year and fire himself. This would show he is a class act, worthy of eternal thanks from the alums and fans of the UH.
Happy turkey day, norm.
See?

Sweet! No need wash. I prefer the post-game sweat on the jerseys. That way, I can take it to the local DNA lab and have it authenticated.
Manti & Cayman also got some help from SB/DB Robby Toma (Notre Dame), RB/SB/DB Dalton Hilliard (UCLA) and FB/TE/DE Kimo Makaula (Washington; now Idaho State).
Hopeful2,
#81… this link will give you a better synopsis of the Q&A… from last night’s Call the Coach…
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=219&f=1136&t=10560538
I think WR Mark Silverstein also had a record receiving day for Punahou as well.
If we don’t win one or more of the next two games, this season will undoubtably be considered worse than the Von Appen winless year…It’s one thing to lose, but to be embarrassed in each game is ridiculous. I don’t blame the players, as its quite obvious that we have “no clue” on offense. At least, it looks like we’ve made adjustments on Defense and there has been “moments” where we actually looked okay defensively. Offensively, we’ve just plain sucked. If you look at all the touchdowns made this year, I think there has been more touchdowns made by special teams and defense than by our offense…I think that’s very “shame” when you have a Head Coach who’s supposedly an Offensive guru.
Auwe…Nuff sad stuff! The UH Basketball team is uplifting our spirits…so, we have something positive to look at.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!!! Afterall, we are blessed that Lamar was on our schedule this year!
#7 & #43,
Any former Warrior player who trained under both will tell you that Tommy is a definite upgrade.
BUT….Tommy isn’t running the S&C program the way he would like to run it…..like he did the past few years. JMHO that overtraining under the new program is a definite contributing factor to the injuries this season.
Anyone notice how much thinner some of the OL are now?…..compared to the beginning of the season. JMHO that the OL is looking weaker, slower and less explosive now…..compared to the beginning of the season….which is a contributing factor to why the OL can’t control the line-of-scrimmage for anything resembling a power running game….even against the much smaller AF Dline.
Even with Manti, Cayman, Robby, Dalton & Kimo, Punahou barely scratched out a close 35-28 HHSSA D1 semi-final win over the Farrington Govs…..before blowing out Leilehua Mules in the D1 finals.
Punahou has a potent team again this year, but getting by Kahuku will be a monumental task. Hopefully it will be a competitive game. In terms of style of play it is probably not a good matchup for the Buff and Blue.
Grinnell’s Jack Taylor scores 138 points 52-for-108 (27-for-71 from the 3-point line) in a 179-104 win.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/8658462/jack-taylor-grinnell-drops-138-points-collegiate-scoring-record
I there an ‘I’ in team or is this the quintessential ball hog?
I think Chow should concentrate on being a Head Coach next year and hire an Offensive Coordinator to run the offense.
Maybe, someone not stuck in a “time warp” of old offensive theory can bring a more innovative approach to UH. Talent may have been an issue this year, but I think there are people that could have “won” with the talent that we have. We’d still have a losing season, but have “hope” for next year with a couple of wins under our belt.
Trying to figure out a starting QB this late in the season definitely shows that our HC doesn’t have a clue how to win.
If we w”I”n by 75 points everytime, hog all you want.
People complain about scheme(esp one person who brings up the same point about “pro-set” every day) but the problem this year is execution. No scheme will be successful unless it is executed correctly. The question is what are the coaches doing to correct the execution issues…..
Dang, out-witted again.
Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, folks! No eat too much and don’t drink and drive. 😉
The preseason matchup was close. Punahous middle linebacker was sidelined and the dbs for Kahuku made an unbelievable amount of pass breakups. Question will be if Punahou can keep up with Kahukus physicality. And if Kahuku can pressure qb. Great game.
I think UH should hire a full time nutritionist like Boise. I also think athletes should receive COLA as many things are more expensive here. Because of what athletes are required to do regarding their bodies having good nutrition should not be a problem.
#120,
While running games for Saint Louis Crusaders (when Adam Noga was healthy) and Kamehameha (with Kaulana Apelu) were somewhat effective against Punahou during the ILH regular season, the Kahuku power running game is a definite step up.
#121,
YUP!
Had Chow known early on what this season would be like, he would have done a lot of things to make the team more competitive– hindsight is 20-20. I don’t think Chow or anyone here saw it coming. Sure, we see it now and so does Chow, but making changes now is too late.
Same with Kaumeyer– it took Kaumeyer most of the season to realize that we need to play more zone and less man press, and to learn what it takes to stop an option team– he has been in the NFL for awhile, so it is understandable. Fans will understand better if Chow can make a few changes to show some improvement and hope for next year.
Give Tommy H. back the control of the S&C program.
Hire an Offensive coordinator, beg Rolo to come back.
Have an open mind on Quarterbacks during the season.
Put the players names back on their jerseys.
Hire UH alum Keith Bhonapha away from Boise State.
Consider the strengths of what worked in 2006 and 2007, we have tape to look at.
Use David Graves as the Wildcat.
Hire a qualified QB Coach.
Have Upper Campus offer academic scholarships to local blue chip recruit’s girlfriends.
UHathlete
Once again you dont speak facts!
We all know that the majority of freshmen redshirt. This could be why we dont have seniors. June didnt recruit preps! this would be JJ’s 5th year freshmen class (ostrowski, Levi legay) I believe thats all JJ has left. WEAK, huh!!!
And we all know Mack recruited JC in beginning, but started going towards preps in the last two classes (8 JC players in the 2010-11)
If your gonna try bring things to the table as Factual! go look up n study something!
#69 jeezy
the past week or so is the first time ive been really agreeing with you!
I think Norm has no choice but to go the JC route (looks like he has a lot of JC offers out already) if his needs are immediate. He needs to avoid what happened to Mack, because the JC are here today and gone tomorrow and pretty soon the cupboard is bare.
I’m the smartest person ever. Just ask my dog. That’s why I keep posting the same stupid things and think that I am going to turn the UH Football program around with my posts. And when my dog gets confused because I post under lots of different names, it makes me angry, and I kick him. Just ask my dog. He knows. He’s a smart dog. And he knows to stay out of sight when UH loses, because he knows he’s going to be kicked a lot!
BTW… are we getting a new AD before the end of November?
Former Warrior,
I need some insight,
Do you know why our receivers are doing so poor with dropped passes? I don’t get it, Ostrowski, Stutzman, and Harding all had great years last year. Harding was even a pro athlete. But I think each of them have dropped more balls this year than all of them combined last year.
a new AD by December is a fantasy. another obstacle UH coaches have to endure thanks to the wonderfully organized administration.
Did anyone see Oregon high powered
innovative spread run and shoot offense
get punched in the mouth by more
physical downhill run style offense.
Isn’t that basically what Chow trying instal
and recruit.Dicipline,smarts,size and toughness.?
Would love to see this process unfold!!
#129
ha ha, you think you’re so funny. well let me tell you, i don’t kick my dog. i love my dog and i only screw the pooch when my mom leaves the house to get us groceries.
Ha Ha yourself. I did not post that my brothers. Even if it’s true.
133, Rodney
For every smash mouth team beating a spread team, there are four or five going the other way and that is why so many teams now have switched– now most of the big 10 is spread led by Florida, most of the SEC uses a spread. Examples are Auburn and Florida winning national championships with the spread, Texas A&M with a spread offense, no tight end formation, borrowed from Houston, beat former No. 1 Alabama (Texas A&M is averaging over 500 yards a game and over 40 points a game in the SEC). Baylor’s wide open all out passing spread just beat the most recent former No. 1 Kansas State and its ground oriented spread offense 52-24!! Even in the NFL, teams have been spreading it out and passing more for several years now– New England using TE’s as downfield split out receivers instead of blockers and running a spread formation with run and shoot routes, NY Giants hire a former run and shoot offensive coordinator who brings run and shoot patterns into the offense.
#134 Yes I agree with you
#137 Sorry I was supposed to use my sock puppet to agree with you … never mind
This tune keeps playing in my mind as I read the blog today . I first posted it on the night shift under ST’s “Head Cases” blog entry…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0ZljYnObOI
I agree, ok corrected…. used my sock puppet to agree with my original post
Rodney..
Both Stanford and Oregon pretty much run the same type of offense… So they know each other well. Oregon didn’t get punched.. at 17-14 they got grazed, barely out-muscled… Maybe out kicked… by one field goal… Essentially, they got stopped by Stanford’s Defense and not so much beaten by the Cardinal’s Offense.
Anyway, think any of those starters on either team would have come to Hawaii if we asked? Just wondering…
I really don’t care who starts at QB this week. Both have their strenghts and weaknesses that evens out the competition. For the fans it more like a beauty contest, who “looks” better to them.
I’m more concerned if Gregory is going to play.
Florida runs a pro-style offense under Muschamp who has talked of the importance of that specific sysytem. His offensive coordinator, Brent Pease, worked under Chris Petersen and implements the same type of shifts and motions as Boise State.
tiffany sale}
by the way the person who keeps making the same point over and over about the “offense” just made it again ….
Looking forward to Rainbow Wahine Volleyball tonight. 😎
Sock Puppet returns!!!
I haven’t kept up with Hawaii HS football for a while…
Who’s favored to win the state title Friday???
Also, how did St Louis fare this year??? I saw at the beginning of the year, one of the Vegas powerhouse schools Bishop Gormon visited and played St Louis. BG is like the Vegas equivalent to Punahou.
Nice feature today about John Lotulelei from Baldwin/UNLV. A Mauian myself we root for everybody from there. Victiorino, Suzuki, Jesse, etc. Maybe we can add one Lotulelei recruit fron Utah. Must be related somehow. Already offered a scholarship.
UH athlete
no smart response to the mack prep recruiting thing?? haha
#142 cocobean,
dead on… Arguing over who’s starting QB isn’t overly important. Both have very weak arms and both aren’t very mobile. Higgins moves his feet slightly better, but he’s incapable of throwing a 7yd hitch to the sideline. I think the one deep ball he threw was one of the ugliest looking passes I’ve seen all year. Makes Tebow look like a good thrower. In any case, the line can’t protect and neither will be starting next year. It’s mainly a competition for next year’s back up job.
Hopefully Will Gregory will be back vs UNLV. After seeing Iosefa as the primary for a couple games now, I’m not sure he can be relied upon because of his ball security issues. I love him as a power/short yardage guy, but he just doesn’t protect the rock. Gregory has been better as the primary RB. Gregory has made improvements to his pass blocking prior to his boxing match.
If you’re a Lotulelei, you gotta be related somehow. Heard John and Star are second cousins. Think their grandfathers were brothers.
…the Center snaps the ball.
heheheh
They were pretty offensive…never defensive. 🙄
Home.
A Grease might damn well sleep ’til eating time tomorrow, bwaahahahah.
d1shima,
You don’t think so? I kind of agree with this guy. http://www.dailybarometer.com/beavers-face-a-similar-foe-in-stanford-1.2949358#.UK2vHYe7Op0
#136 don’t forget the Auburn & Florida had super human college QBs that nobody could stop.
The spread only works when the OLine is talented and playing well. If the OLine is subpar, it looks like Washington St this year. UNLV employed a spread offense under Mike Sanford and it was an utter failure and Sanford was run out of Vegas.
If the defense controls the line of scrimmage, it can be stopped… (see Stanford over Oregon, Florida over A&M, 2010 BCS Championship Auburn over Oregon, Gerogia over Hawaii Sugar Bowl). All the winning teams in those games consistently controlled the line. And all,of the losing teams mentioned were the best offenses in the nation.
The Tim Chang and Colt Brennan teams all had multiple NFL prospects on the Oline almost every year they played. That’s the real key to their success. No matter what offense you run, you need talent for it to work properly. You put Brennan, Bess, G-Mullins, Rivers with this year’s OLine and I can guarantee you it would look pedestrian.
This years team would have looked better with the old system, but it would not have been good enough to save McMackin’s job. There’s little talent at receiver, UH would have to rely on Graves, but he didn’t prove much after replacing Moniz’s injury, and the OLine situation wouldn’t be any better. The defense is what it is, tons of injuries and wouldn’t look any better.
With the old system UH might only have 3 wins now (that’s assuming UH beats CSU and UNM). Assume UH wins the last two games, that totals 5 wins… Mack would be let go the end of this year instead of last year… Then a new coach will be hired January, then we’re right back in the same situation as we find ourselves in now.
UH had to change direction after last year and take its lickings this year. It was inevitable.
And on a side note… Butler is getting all kinds of help from the officials vs Illinois in the Maui finals. The officiating is a joke. Butler has an unreal shooter on their team… I’m talkin Jimmer Fredette shooting range.
This is the best article I have read, thank you, I have learned a lot of knowledge in this area. http://www.bestreplicahermesbags.com/#Hermes Wallet 8643 Red Crocodile Veins 4115
#156 uhh, the comparison is between Oregon St and Stanford
Oops… meant to say “No matter what offense you run, you need talent on the offensive line for it to work properly”
Oy vey….
I tot you was kidding!
I see the Warrior Beat has an increasing number of fans like #158 in the past few weeks…

Former UH Athlete..
Oops.. you’re right… my bad..
but still it was a game of great defenses… both teams can score tons of points but both teams combined points were no more than one team’s average.
Go VolleyBows!
Warrior Beat does not need cheap replica hand bags…
We demand the real stuff.
Dang Dwight Howard can jump. He just rejected a shot about 2ft above the rim.
Hope everybody have a nice Thanksgiving tomm. Hope each of our Warrior athletes have somewhere to eat some good Thanksgiving eats. Hope errybody enjoy the holiday. Gotta get back to cooking and prepping some onolicious grinds for tomm. so errybody be easeh. Also, I’m thankful for all you characters in here whether you post good stuff, bad stuff, dumb stuff, off the wall stuff, stuff out of your okole, or whateva at least we all here for one purpose, talk Warrior football. Majahlos errybody…shakaz out!
St Louis had a rough year against Punahou and spit against Kamehameha. Punahou outscored them 81-14 over two games and have mercy-ruled them twice now in two seasons. Still one of the best teams in the State though.
Kahuku is definitely favored — how could they not be? They have already beaten the Puns once this year. Kahuku is beatable… although undefeated three of their games were won by one score — but their defense has been terrific. No one has scored more than twice on them all season I believe with the most points against being 15. As tough as their defense has been their offense has also generally been productive — although they only scored twice against Waianae and Leilehua.
Punahou’s D has also been very good. They rested players in the final ILH game against Kamehameha so that is an outlier. Other than that the only teams all year to score more than twice against Punahou have been Kahuku (21 pts) and Millilani (19 pts, some of that in garbage time.)
It is probably safe to say that Friday’s games will be more entertaining than the game the next day.
#166
warrior beat needs some real facts
can you start providing it??
georgia over hawaii sugarbowl 2007?? we all know hawaiis offensive line wasnt good that year(3 linemen going to NFL). they gave up 34 sacks n i believe thats without sugarbowl game. Imagine if Colt n Dreadheads werent on the same page or if colt didnt have a interanl clock/scramble ability. Garens it would have been a horrible season if Colt had bailed. Which means, like I say again Qb and Recievers on the same page helps the oline!
We all know the Spread evens out the playing field, it gives us little guys a chance. why try to argue that point??
FUHA: Just because you write more doesn’t mean you have any more inside information than Hawkpeter, BigIslandKurt, Kapakahi, Independent Thinker, or anyone else on this blog….These 4 have given the people true and insider examples of things that they know are going on because they have relationships with the players and or are privy to information the normal “fan” would not be privy to. To pretend that their points are not valid when you only know what you see in the media would be naive and ignorant. Take the info as an insight or enlightenment on why the performance of the team might be so poor. I have personally witnessed the interactions between the coaches and players, and having seen other teams and how they interact with players and families, this is not the norm (no pun intended.) There is much more to the story and more will become evident to all once the season is over and players have safely transferred to other programs.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!…. Eat.. enjoy… and if you drink, don’t drive. Be safe!
but then again Gruanke in 07 had ability to scramble as well and also had some experience wit the recievers. who knows maybe it wouldnt have been that bad!
You should just stop fighting for Chow with your Factless facts.
And Standfords D is just amazing give them credit! Florida Recruits the most or 2nd most talent rich grounds and has 4 n 5 stars flocking to them. Oregons and A&M’s downfall those games??? freshmen QB
Need to differentiate Spread option, 4-wide, Run ‘n Shoot. Not all the same, not interchangeable.
Miah and I think Legay were grayshirts so they are the only ones left from JJ’s recruiting. Haku, Geordan, and Paipai are from Mack’s 2008 recruiting class and are the only 5th year seniors in what would have been Mack’s 5th year.
…c’mon, if not for revisionist history who knows who’d be at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.! 😉
nice site, all posts are very nice. http://www.migliorepiuminimoncler.com/#smanicati moncler
#174 basically the same theory tho. spread the field out.
negative
Here’s a link of the Offensive production of this year’s football teams..
Amazing to see La Tech on the top after 11 games…
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/stats/byteam?cat1=offense&cat2=Total&conference=I-A_all
Whoa… I never realized that the ultimate decision maker for the play to be run for La Tech wasn’t the OC.. it’s the walk-on center..
Actually i think your right #175. My bad atleast i can say that
So cool! Thanks. http://www.cheapestchanelhandbags.com/#chanel bags prices
…Dana Holgersen, Urban Meyer and June Jones are not gonna walk outta a room and proclaim they’ve found their separated-at-birth triplet brothers!
OOops.. meant to say.. QB.. not OC in the above.. but I guess that’s also true, too… I can see how a lot of other teams might adopt the concept next season.
My dog knows more than everybody! My dog’s smart cause its a sock puppy.
#128 Most 1st year coaches have to go JC the 1st year because of the timing of their hiring. Most new coaches are hired in January… By way of the recruiting calendar, almost all the good prep players are already committed by the time the new coach gets started.
NCAA Official signing period for football is usually the 1st week of February Thru the 1st week of April. Chow, like most 1st year coaches, only had 3 months to put together his recruiting class from scratch. Recruiting classes take years to develop under normal circumstances. Luckily for UH, Chow should have a wide network of recruiting connections with the time he’s spent in Utah (BYU & Utah) and Southern California (UCLA & USC).
Just from personal experience, I was in written contact with college coaches all over the mainland as early as my sophomore year in high school. I took my alotted official visits during my junior year and later verbally committed to UH just prior to my senior year in High School. All college coaches (from any sport) already know all the local prospects by the time they reach high school.
RE #180 … interesting to see Boise so far down the list. Defense is a big part of their game.
Ahahahahhahah, sock puppet!!!! Have a great Thankgiving, you!!!
Something to ponder.. on..
When u start a true Freshman..you are actually starting a Senior from High School….as there is only a few months…from June Graduation to… the first practice and game…starting 6 or 7 Freshman against junior and seniors in college… is like starting a Pop Warner Team against a High School team…with buko juniors and seniors…no match… don’t blame the coach..or food and nutrition or weight trainer…it is simply maturity….and experience…it may work for other sports…. but very rare for football.. although was glad to see Te’o accomplish that…
Imua…Warriors…
More “faceless facts” for jonj…
The 2008 class was set up by JJ prior to his departure. Most of the 2008 class had verbally committed prior to the 2007 season finale vs Washington. The ideal situation for student-athlete recruits is to be committed prior to their senior year. UH being a mid-major school, gets a lot of commitments after the major programs fill their open scholarships. Typically UH gets a lot of their commits during the season.
Part of the reasoning for Mack’s hiring was to maintain continuity with the run n shoot and to keep as many of JJ’s commits after he took all the best assistants with him to SMU.
Howzit, gang!
Oh my! Look at the time!
Happy Thanksgiving! Be safe… and remember to breathe between every five bites or so! (And watch da fingers!)
Been without our car since this past Saturday. Hope to get it back sometime Friday. We’ll see…
By the way, isn’t that UH President a Nutritionist? Just asking…
Have a great day, everyone!
how long ago did u play for UH? bc last I checked, u couldn’t take officials during ur junior season
IMHO, what did or didn’t happen 4 years ago, 5 years ago, or even earlier this season doesn’t matter, it is what it is. What matters is what the man in charge does going forward from today. To find out, all we can do is just wait and see.
#191 really?? haha… again u kick urself in the ass!!

I’m very ambivalent on Chow. In a debate I think I could argue both pro and con pretty effectively. Reading here and comments to articles there’s a lot definite pro and con people. It’s my feeling that most people share my ambivalence – not at all happy with the results so far but anticipating better things in the future.
The debate between the “Rome wasn’t built in a day” people and the “are we there yet, are we there yet?” people has been pretty entertaining. Different views, point and counter point. Some good research, informative. I likey. I also know some can do without it.
Annodah Dave,
You can invite players home for Thanksgiving dinner, but you need to fill out paperwork in the Compliance office. Probably no time now to do that.
Saw Cecil Doe tonight at Long’s; hope they all have a place to go for dinner tomorrow.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Hahahahaha!!!! This is not even about football anymore.
Its only about pro Mack vs pro Chow.
Has nothing to do with football. So obvious… 😆

49ers highlights show kap is good at hitting the open man with plenty of time, ??? what will happen when he’s pressured or the receivers are slightly covered? not sold on him yet…don’t think alex can win the sb…
Harbaugh has shown he knows how to develop/handle a QB. He did with Smith what four other coaches couldn’t – win. He keeps his QBs on a short leash, tries to them in their comfort zone.
He can probably win with either but seems to really like CP’s athleticism. Smith is a good athlete in his own right but not in CP’s class.
Should be CK.

Happy Thanksgiving!
But not if you are the turkey . . .
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Just my impression but, maybe the the blog or maybe the low turnout at the games seems to be changing norm chows attitude and being a little more flexible , was shocked to hear norm chow willing to give higgins and shutter a chance at quaterback, this shouldve been done a lot earlier in the season but, at least norm chow is bending.maybe norm chow is making the same mistake as mack by having young inexperienced coaches. would like to see norm chow install more high percentage short yardage passing plays instead of running up the middle.Hope norm chows trys to adapt and use plays that is working, instead of doing the same old plays over and over to make it work .
Great Morning All!
Happy Thanksgiving and Aloha to Devin Overstreet! Welcome and enjoy your stay! 🙂

Getting ready for a good turkey dinner. Aside of the food not having to cook and clean up are the best parts.
And, definitely looking forward to the tryptophen coma later today.

Hope there’s more consistency in store after the team runs out of Ingrams!

#239, Gib has assembled the best UH BB team in decades. They are very exciting this year. When clicking that can hang with anybody. They’re super young this year so I would expect some inconsistent play.
UH got some validation with Illinois winning the Maui Invite.
Oh BTW, Gib is in his 3rd year as coach. It’s taken him 3 recruiting classes to get the roster to where we wants it
So what are you saying? We should have gotten a young, up and coming coach for a certain other sport? 😉
