D-ends step up
The Warriors made an easy transition back to work yesterday after a one-week hiatus for spring break:
• Defensive left end Liko Satele’s left arm was in a brace because of an injured left forearm. Satele won’t participate in contact drills the rest of the spring, but he is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in August. UH head coach Greg McMackin said Satele played well during the first five spring practices.
• Paipai Falemalu, the No. 1 defensive right end, took several reps at left end in place of Satele. Marcus Malepeai, Beau Yap, and Desmond Dean also received extended work at DE. During the team drills, Yap had a sack. “I like those three guys,” d-end coach Cal Lee said.
* One of the d-end candidates, Siaki Cravens, has not practiced this spring while recovering from a procedure on an injured leg.
• Miah Ostrowski’s return after three months as the UH basketball team’s point guard was a success. Ostrowski practiced as the No. 1 right slotback, and he looked crisp in running routes and catching passes. He said he developed chemistry as starting quarterback Bryant Moniz’s roommate on road trips last year. With the help of two of Moniz’s cousins, their hotel room was turned into a mini theater. A projector played movies on a large canvas.
• The first two spring practices, Allen Sampson and Terence Bell were the No. 1 slotbacks. While the receiver competition will remain open until training camp, Sampson and Bell yesterday practiced at wideout. The Warriors want to improve their vertical attack, and Sampson and Bell are speedy on the 9 routes along the sideline.
• Corey Paclebar remained as the No. 1 left slotback. Billy Ray Stutzmann will push for a job at slot or wideout.
• With Tank Hopkins playing his best since his arrival in Manoa in June 2009 and John Hardy-Tuliau moving from nickelback, it appeared the Warriors were set at cornerback. What’s more, highly regarded corner Mike Edwards joins this summer. But Kawika Ornellas has played well in man coverage this spring, providing depth and, maybe, some more competition at corner.

• The theme of yesterday’s practice was to “play fast.” That was emphasized when the coaches implored the offense to play at “game tempo” during team drills. And defensive coordinator Dave Aranda told his defense he wanted hockey changes during substitutions. It was a reference to how quickly hockey teams change lines.
• For the final drill of practice, there was an offense versus defense competition, with points awarded for third-down stops, interceptions, forced fumbles. The surprise of camp, kicker Kenton Chun, converted a 37-yarder. Tyler Hadden has the lead, but Chun and Kyle Niiro are solid insurance.

What’s up with all of the national talk-show bashing of the NCAA tournament?
Keep hearing hosts moan about how the one-and-done format is not rewarding the better teams.
I liken the whole thing to someone who buys an outfit at Neiman Marcus only to find a similar outfit at Ross Dress For Less. Administrators and booster must be wondering why they pour so much money into salaries and facilities when a lower-budget program can be just as successful.

Now that is what I have been waiting to hear. I have always wanted the Warriors to up the tempo in practices. Hopefully if they practice fast they will start off fast come game time.

#6, That’s good. Didn’t want them to get in trouble but, if caught early for something minor, we would eliminate any major penalty. I didn’t want to be the guy to point it out but, it WAS on statewide TV. Maybe some visitor to the islands saw it and would make trouble.
As far as I know the better teams have won in the NCAA tournamant. You lose you go home. They just don’t like being wrong.

RedZone, I’m with you…practice like you play. I especially like Aranda’s hockey change. That should lessen the time-outs that have to be taken when there’s confusion on substitutions. May mean a few penalties for 12 players on the field at the season’s beginning but that should work itself out quickly.

I agree. If the defense shows up early, this coming season could be verrrry interesting! If the D perfects the hockey change, it also might mean that they won’t have to stay in a base defense against hurry up offenses. They’ll be able to run their blitzes (theoretically) and put pressure on the unproven QB’s. I’d like that scenario.

Some people are warriors. Me, I’m a worrier. And I’m still worried about the DEs. Satele is hurt and Cravens is hurt. Paipai is talented but he’s a tweener. Dean, Malepeai and Yap are promising but have zero game experience. Hopefully the guys will heal up and step it up.

I once asked a doctor if he was ever worried about dealing with sick patients. He said he was concerned but not worried. He said he couldn’t do his job if he were worried. I think it’s a good thing when people are concerned enough to care.

Echoing cheepono at #17. How the coaches decide to use Darius will be a topic of interest for all of us. Maybe not quite fast enough to be a wr. Is he quick enough to be a slot? For sure, he’s got too much talent to sit on the bench. In the slot, I can just see him blocking down on the linebacker during a run…katoosh! As a wr, the poor corner is mis-matched on a bubble screen. In the red zone, he’s a tough match-up on a jump ball or slant. His nick could be “Nightmare” for defensive coordinators.

And, with this new league opening up, this may give many others yet another chance at continuing on after college ball.
I think the intent of wanting Brennan there was to help the receivers. It wasn’t meant as an audition for Colt. Higgins has been training with a lot of the fellas at API (by the way, the “I” doesn’t stand for anything anymore, just like SAT), and they feel comfortable having him throw passes.

lopati completed his two year jc stint this past fall, not sure of his whereabouts at this time. he played as a de for arizona western garnering all jc region honors.
tj alofipo found his way back to college, he, too, played for arizona western last year as a mlb. if he secures an aa degree next year, he would be available. he could be a rebound guy for us.
I think Dez Bryant could have avoided being sued by a jewelry company if he were allowed to shop at malls.
i didn’t think that having colt at the pro day would be a beneficial thing for colt or for those exhibiting their skills that day.
for colt, if anyone is still interested in him, they would bring him in for a private workout themselves.
for the salas and company, it would have been good if colt had been in serious training mode. i would imagine after the layoff and recuperation period his passing skills needed to be honed and would probably not have been sharp enough to actually help these guys.

I think bounceback recruits are very rare. It’s just too difficult to go away to a junior college, accumulate the right transferrable credits in a timely manner, and then come back. It’s a better route to go to, say, West Oahu for a year, then transfer to UH. But that means out-of-pocket money. If you go to an Arizona JC, you can receive an athletic scholarship, but again, you deal with the course-credit clock. What’s more, you go back into the pool of recruits.

As I understand it, the NFL can only bring in draft-eligible players from this year’s class for personal workouts during the lockout. That’s why it was crucial for free agents to have signed deals before the lockout.

Well, according to AOL report this afternoon…..Honolulu ranked #2 worst commute(H-1/eastbound), in the nation; Los Angeles ranked #1 worst commute(405 east/west bound).
Looks like report taking feeds off of GPS readings.
Good thing most of UH football games are in the evenings…and the rail might help in delivering relief from the conjestion either way evenings or daytime as well.
jc’s in arizona do give out “scholarships” including dorms/housing assistance. it is why if you check out the rosters they are loaded with all state players from coast to coast.
whereas, in cali no scholarship moolah at all.
heck, if they weren’t student/athletes like the rest of the world, they’d be paying for a college education out of their own pockets anyway.
so what price is a year at a non-football 4yr college?
the price to go the route of blaze soares, in his case hpu, is well worth it. west oahu college is in fact a cheaper route and you know most of the courses (you gotta be smart and take the right ones) will transfer.
it should be a no-brainer. besides staying at home for the local boys is a great transition to college, focus on the schoolwork.

As fully expected, the RPI this time around for the Rainbow Wahine is nowhere near last season.
The Louisville Slugger and Cathedral City Classic tournaments are not the culprit. The offending parties are the weaker opponents we faced during our other non conference tournament opponents in Manoa.
Last season we had the luxury of hosting the likes of then defending NCAA champs Washington, nationally ranked Stanford, DePaul, and a decent Lipscomb team.
Teams like Southern Utah, Weber State, and losing a game to Iona doesn’t help, but that is in the past.
The belief is that the Top 60 make it to the NCAAs. If we win the 2011 WAC tournament, then we can forge our own way, if not… well, let’s look back at years where we needed an at-large bid:
Back in 2008 the Rainbow Wahine gathered over at what was East Side Grill just off campus to watch the selection show not knowing what their fate was for a bid and with an RPI of somewhere in the low 40’s we got the invite. However in 2009, t’was a different tale when we finished the season with an RPI in the higher 80’s.
Ranking will play a role as well. In 2008, following a great 2007 campaign we did enter the season ranked, but I cannot remember if we fell out of the Top 25. In 2009 we were not ranked at all. Both seasons ended with an overall winning record.
We remain in good shape with regard to RPI. We cannot help the schedule we had and the losses to certain teams are done with and in the past. The next step to helping ourselves comes this weekend with Fresno State. It will NOT be easy. It never is in Fresno.
But Fresno State is NOT bulletproof at home. We have had offensive struggles this season and so did we in 2009 where we bested the Bulldogs winning the series in Fresno 2-1 and who will forget Kanani Pu’u-Warren’s game-winning homer after 16 innings! Again, I remind people over and over AGAIN. 2009 was not a banner year in the hitting department. Then preseason WAC player of the year, senior Clare Warwick, was hitting below .300 for the first time in her college career despite consistent and strong performances at 3rd base and only junior Amanda Taualii and senior Tanisha Milca led the team as the only two hitting above .300 all season long. We had a good freshman campaign from Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and a good WAC season from junior Kanani Pu’u-Warren and a very late-season offensive surge from senior Audrey Andrade.
2011 IS a different beast. With respect to the ladies of the 2009 season, there is more hitting potential and the returning 5 can still light it up when given the opportunity.
Perhaps this road game is just what is needed? It’s been a while since we’ve hit the road and Fresno State is not unfamiliar territory for most on this team. They’ve seen and hear the cat-calls and rudeness in Tuscaloosa in a BIGGER atmopshere with MORE on the line and survived. However, the “tune-up” series against Utah State is over and for the most part our struggles really began to take shape at home. While it is in Fresno, perhaps a change of scenery can help in our continuing progression towards improvement.
Game will be on ESPNU 4PM HAWAII TIME this FRIDAY. Commentators will be Cara Capuano and Jessica “Two-Face” Mendoza.

Kazz, is there any stats to show Na Wahine BA for night and day games? Just curious.
Other factor is different officials at the various venues. Not complaining about officials but Na Wahine have experience with the pool of officials who have called games here and it might take some adjustment while on the road.
High and wide, low and tight, officials have their “zones” that they call regularly and hittters should be able to adjust….just saying.
surprisingly the drop down content for the NCAA has the correct ESPN and USA today poll but the RPI is last season’s.
I can look at the game to game ba listed and seperate those that were day games, road games, etc…

Well, I think Ricketts and Parnaby are well-versed in eventually adjusting to an umpire’s strike zone.

st…a few years ago when jd was selected as the new athletic director many folks assumed that he would replace the two associate athletic directors that were hired by the previous ad.
instead jd kept them on. many, myself included figured he needed them for stability during the transition and then he would later evaluate their performances to see if they were keepers or not.
i assume that after several years now, jd, has been satisfied or more than satisfied with mcnamara and clapp. are my assumptions correct?
al thinking same but I have faith in JD and trust his judgment. I have him around 80% being responsible doing his duties. again jmho

Football practiced on the grass field, right while UH softball was taking batting practice — on the field and in the cages. They do spend a lot of time working on their hitting, in case anyone wondered.

We also must remember that the previous three or four years were unlike other softball years. I remember when 1-0 games were the norm. I mean, the whole extra-inning rule — runner is placed at second — was because of the dominance of pitching. Last year set expectations very high.

Generally speaking there is no real difference. Too many factors outside of the simple daytime and nighttime stuff.
However over the years it does seem that we start out a bit slower on games starting before 1pm, especially on the road. Errors, walks, Ks, etc and then there is the umpires with their strikezones, etc… too many things to consider that stats do NOT show.
i would be curious to see how last year’s stats match up with this year’s.
was it the bats?
was it the lineup?
methinks, the bats may have helped. but, last year’s team had a more mature and consistent lineup. the biggest factor was the senior leadership, which is what we seem to lack this year.
Speaking of bats, tremendous difference in strategy across the board in bay-su-booru because of the toy bats this year.

Rainbow Wahine definitely miss last year’s seniors. Traci Yoshikawa was a former shortstop who played second base. And Kanani Puu-Warren was one of the strongest players players. She also was like a fifth infielder because she made some incredible throws from right field. And we know how good Amanda Taualii was. They had to replace four key starters.

Home games, Day/Evening, .276, .278. Could be visually better parks on the road, consistent zones, less pressure or a number of things.
ST, I know they work hard with BA practice. Machine vs. live pitching? I have seen the evolution of wahine softball and me thinks it is Great! Skill level has gone up exponentially and it has gotten much more sofisticated. We will see more and more teams with great pitching and hitting and Na Wahine will be up there. Luv what Coach Cool has done with the team.
Stats are just numbers but you can glean some useful information if you have a big enough data base. Major league leads in this area of record keeping/tendencies etc.
Al the Na Wahine BA is down this season, nothing to do with the bats, if they don’t make contact the home runs won’t happen. At home games, I don’t see the fast balls pitch after pitch, a lot more breaking stuff, off speed and the straight change up. Last season the pitchers challenged the Na Wahine batters and they responded, this year, lots of junk balls and off speed stuff.
At the regional level and beyond, I think the pitchers will come after the batters and the girls got to respond to the heat.

Sorry the bats had NOTHING to do with this season.
There is no bat in the world, no matter how old or worn in would lead to home runs or even hits with the way some of our batted balls have been popping up.
Call it timing, call it mechanics, call it with how they are seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand, call it anything you want, but it was NOT the bats.
When contact is made, like it was last season, the balls are STILL GONE.
Al too bad Ricketts and Iwata’s shots into the deep recesses of the tennis courts weren’t on television, awesome. The outfield barrier nets are high and those two shots cleared them easily and kept climbing and they would have been HR in any field.
I wonder if Iwata and Rickett’s dingers are on tape somewhere? There’s always someone filming.

the road is always tough.
to get there you fly 30,000 ft up in the air for 5-6 hours which discombobulates your body’s chemistry.
you get your body clock all mixed up by two or three hours which further throws your body chemistry askew.
you eat when you are not supposed and you eat foreign foods.
you play in altitudes way higher than 50 ft up.
you have hostile crowds yelling obscenities about your deceased grandma.
you play on a field that you know nothing about the bad hop zones, wind carry, shadows, speed of the turf, footing, and all that good stuff.
yah, the road is long, winding, but, somebody has got to be the traveling team.
deal with it? yup, deal with it, take it on, challenge the conditions, or go home.
Those nets are HIGH! Wasn’t there to see Iwata’s but Steph just moonshot dat ball and eevryone knew it was outta there. The only question was if it cleared the net and how far it would go. It cleared and I think it’s still flying somewhere! Steph swings a heavy bat!
Iwata’s one was the farthest Ive seen in three years.

Ricketts’ one was similar in distance and location to one Melissa Gonzalez hit last season at home against LaTech.

one starter, katy grimes is missed more so in the dugout and behind the plate than at bat. her leadership and will to win has been sorely missed.

kazz, ralph…having been around the game 20+ years i know that the bats have nothing to do with it. i just brought that up since it had been a topic of discussion in the past.
we lost some tough outs last year in tualii, grimes, puu-warren, and yoshikawa.
last year’s lineup was a pitcher’s nightmare. there was virtually no one they could pitch around because the next gal in the lineup was just as dangerous.
opponents this year are taking the approach of, one, don’t pitch to majam. two, don’t pitch to iwata. they’ll pitch to the rest in given situations and so far it has worked. the pressure on the others is wearing them down, mentally.
kliebenstein is loose as a goose at the plate. she approaches the plate with no fear. she is hitting with more power than she has ever experienced in her whole career. she is mentally seeing the ball better than ever and weight training is doing her well.
a lot of players are pressing at the plate. you can see it in their eyes and in their frustration.
i hope ricketts stays in the batting order. she goes up looking to hit. looking to hit it where it is pitched and with authority. she too has the attitude necessary to hit successfully.
i like jensen, she goes up with a hungry bat. having sat for so long and this being her final and only year here. she wants to make a difference and is also calm at the plate.
aguirre had that early in the season. once she finds it again she will pick up where she left from last year.
a batting slump can be remedied. its mental. one’s performance at the plate is 75% mental. they all have talent to hit.
sometimes, focusing on the rest of your game is the solution. focus on your defensive skills. work on your baserunning and the like.
doing extra work in the batting cage is often more detrimental. your hands get tired. your back is fatigued. your core muscles are overworked. your legs get stressed out. better to have less in the cage and have a fresh body with which along comes a fresher mental makeup.
Yup. Kliebenstein seems like a cool cat. Being the first in her family to go to college, let alone be a student-athlete is something to be proud of and she’s handled herself very well.

I’ve been to a few of the wahine sball games and gotta agree with ralph #82. wahine returnee’s not seeing pitches like last year. mostly lots of spotting, off speed and out side stuff. dey need to practice patience and be choosy. not sure if soft ball hitters can go with the pitch and just ding some to the opposite field. thinks would help plenty. as for the newbies, catcher is great example she’s new, so pitchers attack her and she banging. soon she will be like the returnee’s.

just because a team needs to reload their qb gun doesn’t mean they are not going to be a good team. ferd should know that there are quality qb’s out there that maybe haven’t been tested but are good players. remember when boise st started a freshmen qb? okay then, boise is a different animal but you get my drift.
Even BSU get some dropoffs. After Zabranski BSU had that Tyler something… (see, I can’t even remember his name!). BSU went 9-3 that year with losses to UW, Hawaii, and ECU in the Hawaii Bowl.

the teams know they have to audition a new qb but the thing is many know the playbook and it’s a matter of getting the reps and experience. this isn’t going to stop the rest of the other players from working their butts off and taking the warriors down. in turn, the warriors cannot be outworked and kick butt when the time comes.

stutzmann, from what i have read it looks to me he is in a no mans land situation. pollard should have one wr spot wrapped up and maybe bright the other. i don’t think bright has the experience to play the slot. good thing get miah. bell, i don’t know. paclebar, he knows the routes so he has a jump on the other slot auditioners.

Although we only got a chance to see two live games, here’s my thoughts…
Opposing pitchers seem to be throwing lots more Rise Balls, with some Drop Balls mixed in. Not so much flat out heat with some change anymore.
I asked several blogs ago… do we have a chance at batting practice with these different kinds of pitches? I’ve heard that Coach Coolen pitches during batting practice. What about those other girls who are sparingly used? Can any of them throw the pitches we will continue to face from our opponents?
Ricketts and Parnaby have super ERA’s, but our losses are up this year because we haven’t been able to pull out as many close games as we did last year.
Also, not trying to pick on anyone, but during those games that we watched live, there were a couple of successful steal attempts. One thing I pointed out to fellow Tsaikos was our catcher’s motion. She has to “load” her arm before throwing the ball. She doesn’t have a quick release. I wonder if it was noticed before.

After watching spring practice for the first time yesterday, I was impressed with Beau Yap at DE. I am also liking what I saw in Aulola Tonga. He still needs to bulk up along with Blake Muir. Defense looking good so far. Can’t wait to see the offense put it all together. Some parts of brilliancy and sometimes not so much.
Almost forgot, RB (Jackson) looks quick. Needs to work on his blocking technique. Vaughn Meatoga took him out of the play with one hit.
Michigan Warrior your right about her throw to second, that is the one area that I think she needs to improve on.

Na Wahine have been blessed with many good catchers and pitchers, Grimes added to their legacy, and Sharla will be a contributor. Kayla Wartner is a HS catcher who signed her NLI with UH. This season she is hitting 13 for 21 with 4 doubles, 4 triples and a HR. She can also play 1st base. She is also a lefty B & T.
Interesting facts from the latest Softball RPI. The WAC has four teams in the top hundred and three in the top fifty: Fresno State is at 19, Hawaii at 45, and New Mexico State at 50. Boise State is coming up with a rating of 100. The team was mentioned in ESPNU web site as a team with notable stat—a solid 18-10 record. UCLA, last year’s national champ, has fallen down to 34. If Hawaii does well against Fresno State it will have a chance to pulling up its RPI. However, this team has little chance to be seeded in the NCAA tournament. If the hitting comes around the Wahine still has the potential to go deep in the postseason. Pitching and defense, which Hawaii have, can take you pretty far if you add timely hitting in the mix. I guess for me hope springs eternal.

Looks like the Fiesta Bowl’s problems may make the BCS kicking it out of the BCS bowl system…the Cotton Bowl is ready with open arms (and Jerry Jones’ checkbook) to take their BCS bowl spot. The Fiesta Bowl has the Big 12 champion, so having Texas or Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl is a natural fit and guarantees a sellout there.

I also agree with Michigan Warrior and Pomai. Had the same conversation with Kekoa. She does have a strong arm, but she cocks her arm and then steps forward instead of stepping and getting her arm into position at the same time. The other thing is learning to take charge out there on dribblers and pop-ups around the pitcher’s mound. Not going to beat her up about it as she’s already exceeded my expectations for a freshman. Just learning how to adjust the game to each pitcher and the other team is a huge learning experience. With her work ethic and talent, I (and lots others) just see her getting better year after year. What great results right now and a wonderful future to contemplate!

Yes. Before the season started I lamented about how difficult it would be to get seeded when the tournament rolls around. Even if we won the WAC tournament this year and got the autobid, I thought it would be hard to be seeded.
No matter as I think several teams have entered the WCWS as an unseeded team in past years. Coming in ranked Top 10 it was apparent our ranking would dip even if we sustained smaller #s in the loss column as our strength of schedule was drastically weaker than last year.
If we can get to 35+ wins and in the worst case scenario finish 2nd in the conference at the end of the tournament, we’d have a chance at an at large bid. No matter… the Wahine are NOT thinking about this scenario anyway. 😎
At most the WAC will only be a two bid softball conference and this is totally dependent on our performance from here on in.
Fresno can falter a bit, finish second in the WAC and have a REAL good shot at an at large due to their RPI. Us, not really the case.
Boise State played softer teams than we did in non-conference and they really have no shot at an at large. It’s ALL or nothing for them and the same goes for NMSU who has compiled a decent record, played but lost to a lot of good teams with I think only one marquee win against Nebraska at home I believe.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
