Safety Marcus Umu of Saint Louis School has accepted a conditional offer from the Warriors. Umu said he is 6 feet 1 and 192 pounds.

According to a Saint Louis official, the Warriors are close to the scholarship limit β€” they are awaiting a ruling on three appeals β€” and Umu would join in 2010 only if Β there is a scholarship available.

As a junior, Umu was named to The Advertiser’s 2008 All-State second team.

I haven’t watched the June Jones video because it froze up on me. I’m on firefox, do I need a plug in to watch the video. Haven’t watched any for several weeks, too many freezes.

The video feed today is starting & stopping. Not easy to listen to & hear the responses.

    Night!

  8. Pomai December 23, 2009 12:56 am

Video is still messed up, an it’s one of the few that I really wanted to see.

  9. gomouton December 23, 2009 12:59 am

Anyone know if we got a shot at Jeremy Ioane? I think hes a better safety

  10. Boa56 December 23, 2009 1:32 am

Since Umu wants to be a Warrior, this makes him better than Ioane (smarter at least).

  11. J-Dog December 23, 2009 2:00 am

    NICE.

Especially since we’ll be without Tonga and Wadsworth for the next 2 seasons. Great pickup.

    Steve M.

What a surprise! Your Mom was in the ICU waiting room today looking for me. She is so kind to bring some dim sum and other goodies to me.

I want to thank you, too, as you had something to do with it.

    Much Mahalos again to you!

Mrs. LTUHF— mom was too impatient to wait until after Fred left ICU and we could all visit. Surprised me since I was at work, but I’m glad the chance timing was right and she met you. She said her going and meeting you was not by chance…

Continued best wishes and prayers for LTUHF, entering his 3rd week in ICU… and to (J)James mom, who Mrs. LTUHF said is two doors away from Fred.

  13. bstunna2002 December 23, 2009 3:42 am

C’mon Boa it’s great that Umu chose to be a Warrior but were still in the hunt for Ioane so comments about one being smarter then the other for choosing aren’t fair bro, for all we know we could be the only offer Umu had while Ioane has several we gotta support these kids even if they go mainland cause you never know they might wanna come back home before it’s all said and done. Congratulations Marcus look forward to seeing you do your thing on the field.

First, Merry Christmas wishes to all.

    Coach Mack.
    Coach Tuioti.
    Coach Cal.

At least respond to Ryan Eastman’s inquiry, pretty please. I watched the freshman last year. He has heart. He played against us good. very good. very very good.

If he’s interested, and i can understand that he might only get to play two years because he’s done two now. i understand he’s coming from a lower division. might be the financial costs of his parents flying all ova america to watch him play.

but heck coaches, if he’s making the inquiry, then you owe it to yourselves to treat him like he’s a special player. he’s proved it on the field. don’t look for hidden messages, just make the inquiry. for us. πŸ˜€
    division,

UH definitely had a need at safety, and with Ioane appearing to go elsewhere it is good that the coaches filled the need.

UH probably needs another safety in this recruiting classes because of the graduations/missions at the safety position, so hopefully Ioane will also commit.

A Nevada LB who was kicked off the team on Tuesday is apparently in jail in Honolulu now.

A spokesman for the Honolulu Police Department said tonight that a man named Andre Davis, believed to be the Nevada linebacker, was arrested on a charge of theft in the second degree, a felony, Monday night and is being held on an $11,000 bail.

Davis, a sophomore, was dismissed from the team Tuesday for a violation of team and athletic department rules, Nevada coach Chris Ault said. Freshman Michael “Duke” Williams was suspended for Thursday’s Hawaii Bowl for violating unspecified team and athletic department rules.

Ran into Coach Nash between the day and evening games yesterday. He confirms that Bob Amis will be a medical redshirt for the balance of this season.

Great games yesterday – I am particularly impressed with St. Mary’s – it’ll be interesting to see how David does against Goliath today.

If Da Beast transfers to UH, does he have to wait a year to play? Can he play on the scout team?

Hey! Not only does Men’s Volleyball start in two weeks, so does the 2010 “spring” training for softball and baseball!!. Na Wahine kick off with with a tournament in mid February and the men the following week have a four-game series against Oregon State. That’s when Life really begins!

Please save your holiday HI-5 containers. I’m coordinating another fundraising drive on Sunday, January 10, for the non-profit I work for and will be picking up donations in town during the previous week if you’re not able to come to beautiful Windward on that Sunday. Party Hearty but safely. All donations ae tax-deductible.

Off to work since I want to get some basketball-watching time in today. UH plays UNLV at 6:30 tonight.

  36. Bulla December 23, 2009 7:08 am

If Da Beast becomes a Warrior, by NCAA rules he will sit out 1 year and red shirt, but he welcomes the opportunity to be on the Scout team……he’ll be going against the 1st team OL, no better way to introduce himself to the top guns πŸ™‚

God willing everything will work out quickly, he’d like to be enrolled for this spring semester so he can get into the system and start training with coach mel and coach tommy.

Merry, Merry Christmas to one and all…………

    Bulla,

I’m excited at even the possibility of Da Beast playing for UH! Are you kidding me..a Warrior Beast? Or is that Beast Warrior? In any case that would spell trouble for opponents.

    ST,

Is Marcus Umu a senior in High School this coming year (since nothing was mentioned about Senior season All-State honors) or will he be entering UH this coming year? I hope it’s the latter.

  48. Garret December 23, 2009 7:41 am

Umu will be at UH starting this summer.

  49. Garret December 23, 2009 7:42 am

    From ST’s article today.

Umu will enroll in UH’s summer session.

  50. Kazz December 23, 2009 7:44 am

Oh my!!! Had tons of fun last night at the Diamond Head Classic. Got there early to catch all of the SMU and UNLV game. ***NOTE*** SMU was nowhere to be found for the national anthem and “Hawaii Pono I”. Only UNLV was on the court as they did it about 10 minutes before the tipoff. It was weird. ***NOTE*** UNLV ran off the court to the locker room BEFORE “Hawaii Pono I” was sung. Remember that when watching or attending tonight’s game. ALSO, REMEMBER THAT WHEN WE CLOSE THE REGULAR SEASON WITH UNLV HERE AT ALOHA STADIUM NEXT SEASON. REMEMBER HOW THEY RAN OFF THE COURT BEFORE OUR STATE ANTHEM WAS SUNG. REMEMBER THAT. R-E-M-E-M-B-E-R THAT!!!

SMU’s band was… “cute”. Their mascot looked more like a wild boar than a horse. Also, their cheerleaders thought it was a good idea to stand in the vacated student section as opposed to ummm…. THE COURT! πŸ˜† Saw an usher advise them to move as later the UH pep band would be setting up shop there as opposed to their ususal spot which was occupied by the SMU band.

Anyway. Good atmosphere last night. Petras Balocka and Hiram Thompson were the biggest factors. Balocka’s play was really getting under the skin of the dozen or so SMU fans sitting next to us. Overall the Charleston fans kept to themselves and didn’t possess the potential to be punchy as the UNLV fans, who are the largest contingent of visiting fans of all the teams this tourney. Ok… well the MAJORITY of UNLV fans are ok as some stood and applauded UH as they ran onto the court as the host team. But I’ll get into what I overheard one UNLV fan say a little later…

Nah, screw it! I’ll say it now!

While taking a smoke break heard a UNLV fan talking to another about how bad the UH home crowd is. He said he went to the Chicago State game we had and how only 3K showed up and sat on their hands for the most part. Now that, I agree with. Our home crowd participation for basketball games can get quite drowsy if not for a boisterous and lively minority. However, he and his friend did discuss how we come out in force for football games at UNLV. Anyway their discussion turned to what kind of “successful” sports UH has. One fan noted the banners for Wahine Volleyball and the other laughed and said, “yeah and that was like a long time ago”. That seemed to amuse them as they said, “and even at that, that is all Hawaii has”…

Ok, I’ll bite. We have one consistant nationally ranked program with respect to NCAA spectator sports. But can they really talk? Their bball team is #15 in the nation right now and that’s damn good, but football??? C’mon! Do they have a baseball team? I dunno? How’s their volleyball team? They’re talking it up like they’ve done consistently well in various “big time” spectator sports themselves… Jesus…

Anyway… ran into Ralph and Jason before the SMU and UNLV game, saw Stretch and had to show him the new UA tapa logo shirt that UA made for UH athletics. I think he snapped a photo of it, and ran into WarriorMojo at the end of the game too. (CHECK YOUR EMAILS SIR!!! πŸ˜† ) Oh and of course Chawan and Lefty were there as usual. Heard Chawan several times during the game… even though he sat 4 sections away from me!!!! 😯

DVR’d the game and watched a little before going to bed and I gotta say, Kanoa Leahey did a good job calling the action!!!

  51. protector December 23, 2009 7:50 am

    To Ralph, royvic & kekoa(iphone),

I didn’t have any trouble viewing the WB video with JJ (or with any previous WB video either) and I have a lemon of a laptop and have always had trouble with it (laptop) in general.

So I really don’t think the trouble is due to the WB production crew.

  52. Stephen Tsai December 23, 2009 7:51 am

    Royvic:
I’m sure they’re not fixing it just to annoy you.

Actually, the original problem had to do with the transmission. It was shot from the hospitality room in Aloha Stadium, so I’m not sure what the signal was like. I think they used both the stadium’s wireless system as well as our own.
But they filmed the show, so I guess it’s a matter of them transferring the film to the archives.
Don’t think our show is a high priority item.
But in case anybody wonders, Jones was great. Really good stuff, from recruiting to grading Mack.

The video started playing then I got a yellow triangle that said “Access denied” aand that the Channel kowner prohibits viewing from the website. This is Murphy’s Law or perhaps just “bachi”. What gives? Did anyone else get the “Access denied” sign? 1st time I’ve seen it.

Great article about Marcus. Just one tiny correction. The boy pictured on the right of the article is not Marcus Umu, the senior at St. Louis High School.

Other than that, so proud of you, Marcus!

  80. A-House December 23, 2009 8:57 am

    Bulla & Mrs Bulla:

It will make Christmas a one to remember for the Tsaiko family if “the Beast” is accepted by Coach Mack and his staff!!

If already accepted, HAPPY, HAPPY, DAYS ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  81. Jack Flash December 23, 2009 9:01 am

    Bulla-
I thought when a player transfers from a lower division, they no need sit out 1 year? Or is that just JC transfers?? Either way, it’ll be great to see you and the Mrs. here cheering for your son!

  82. Manoa Mist December 23, 2009 9:01 am

Man, I would pick up Ryan Eastman in a heartbeat if I was UH. That kid has heart.
Of course, Andrew Manley is the most college ready QB to ever come out of Hawaii, and UH only offered him a greyshirt, da bastaads.
    Sorry, I kid, I kid…

  83. Stephen Tsai December 23, 2009 9:02 am

    I clarified Umu’s situation.
It’s a conditional offer based on the availability of a scholarship.
UH has to wait to see how many scholarships it has. That depends a lot on situations involving Rocky, Brashton and Laupepa.

  84. βρΡω808 December 23, 2009 9:03 am

Welcome to the Warriors Marcus Umu!

  90. madeinhawaii December 23, 2009 9:36 am

Those three appeals in the blog above.. are for sixth year, right?

“Question. I will not be able to watch a replay of the Warrior Beat show with June Jones. I will be out drinking with my Battlestar Galatica fan club buddies. How did he grade Coach Mack?”

  92. madeinhawaii December 23, 2009 9:37 am

Did the Beast redshirt ? If not, doesn’t that mean he’ll have three to play two?
I certainly would like to see him in the mix at Manoa.

  93. sportsbow December 23, 2009 9:41 am

    ST

    Referring #84.

Does this mean that if there’s no scholarship available for Umu, he’s going to grayshirt?

  94. Slugger December 23, 2009 9:43 am

    Bulla,

Hope the Beast gets on the team to play at home. Sitting out a year will give his knees a chance to heal. It’d be great to see him play at UH!

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! ~ I just love to say that.

    Perhaps, “Son-shine”?

  104. Jack Flash December 23, 2009 10:08 am

Just watched the Warrior Beat replay with JJ. Say what you want about the guy as far as the past goes (Sugar Bowl Debacle, and other things), but he truly is a visionary. If only the higher-ups at UH-Manoa and those that control the $$$ had gotten off their collective ‘okoles earlier, i think we would have had a remarkable program with top notch facilities (and a new stadium to boot!) Oh well…

    Jack Flash on # 105,

Totally agree! But we all know HF was a “‘Dream Killer”. Great track star
& Olympics administrator (apparently); just a lousy UHAD with little
    vision or foresight!

    bstunna2002 on # 125,

I hope they saved one for Mercado, too!

  126. al December 23, 2009 12:06 pm

d1…. i stopped going to the wes-side. he is not humble enough to admit when he has erred.

  127. al December 23, 2009 12:11 pm

bs….i was hoping that ioane committed, he plays like polamalu.

  128. A-House December 23, 2009 12:39 pm

    al:

remember now – you are classfied as a UH supporter and as such cannot encourge/induce a potential recruit to attend UH – but hey, if he should ask your opinion, by golly, give it to him!!!

just be sure there are no witnesses around! – even me – hehehe!

  129. A-House December 23, 2009 12:45 pm

    Protector:

“dream killer” – damn, that’s being too nice to that ________________; fill in the blank time!!!

how can a person with his “qualities” even apply for a job? yet, there are people out there who can be sweet talked – and yes, someone or more than some one did a wicked job for us – those who are in this category whoud come forth with a sincere apology to all residents of Hawaii for their stupidity – maybe with a hefty contribution to the UHAD for all that we have suffered.

  130. Bulla December 23, 2009 12:45 pm

mahalo for ALL the prayers and support,

we did everything we had to do on our side to make it happen, NCAA paperwork and documentation as requested by coach….waiting for the other 1/2 to follow up since monday. just waiting for some communication…..

if it happens, he would red shirt the first year but still have 2 to play. he is leaving a lot to come home, but he wants to be a Warrior, and wants to play at Aloha Stadium. let’s all be positive and see what happens.

  131. A-House December 23, 2009 12:48 pm

there is a certain serenity surrounding my brain that the best of recruting for UH will pop up soon and it will be a multiple upon multiple commitment to the Warrior program!!!

Protector, now that is a upside “dream killer” – for all the schools that are pursuing local recruits – you can suck wind!!!

  132. A-House December 23, 2009 12:50 pm

and Bulla, the Beast is included in my #133!!!

  134. Jack Flash December 23, 2009 1:05 pm

    A-House and Protector-
Yes, HF was a first class moron. Let’s hope for a more proactive approach from JD and the current admins. I think either Bankoh or First Hawaiian Stadium has a nice ring to it!

  136. Wes December 23, 2009 1:18 pm

    From “Prep Talk, 12/20/09:”

“I gotta admit, having seen Yates speed past Kamehameha on Thursday, and based on Orange Lutheran’s appearance before and during warm-ups, I thought Yates would win, 90-60.

    Boy, was I wrong.”

I can admit when I have erred, Al, so please stop telling lies on someone else’s blog. If you have issues with me, tell me directly.

I won’t admit to being wrong about Manley because my personal assessment of him still stands; I’ve seen him play enough over the past three years to be confident in my own OPINION.

  137. madeinhawaii December 23, 2009 1:18 pm

Or maybe JJ will meet some Billionaire who wouldn’t mind having a multi-function stadium in Hawaii named after him, eh?

  138. A-House December 23, 2009 1:19 pm

    Brew808:

I would have NEVER thought of “petrafied kaka” to describe him – now, that is a good one!!!!!!

  139. Garret December 23, 2009 1:26 pm

Or maybe JJ will meet some Billionaire who wouldn’t mind having a multi-function stadium in Hawaii named after him, eh?

    madeinhawaii,

Did you notice that T. Boone Pickens’ wife is paying to fly the two mustangs to the Hawaii Bowl? JJ also was T. Boone’s guest at a Cowboys game, and got T. Boone and his wife to go to an SMU…they missed Oklahoma State’s homecoming game for that.

SMU has several billionaire alumni and I read that 4 or 5 SMU alums own NFL teams so they are definitely into sports. Even with that, it can’t hurt for JJ to get on excellent terms with Pickens…even 5% of what Pickens has given Oklahoma State would probably be more than anyone has ever given UH Athletics.

  140. βρΡω808 December 23, 2009 1:28 pm

    πŸ˜€ I was being generous. 😈

  141. d1ε³Ά December 23, 2009 1:28 pm

    Take that, Al!

    sheesh πŸ™„

  142. madeinhawaii December 23, 2009 1:29 pm

    Garret,

If JJ gets all the financial support and facilities he needs at SMU.. I can see him steering some of that donor interest in our direction, especially if the said donor is interested in putting his name on a public facility seen around the world regularly..

As long as it’s not Trump.. πŸ˜‰

  143. Garret December 23, 2009 1:30 pm

No wonder Texas gave Mack Brown that $2 million raise…I thought that was crazy, but when you look at the revenue numbers before and after Brown there is a huge difference. With the NCAA going to 12 game seasons and the Big 12 having a championship, the only way UH could play Texas again would be to go to Austin for a 7-figure payday.

Texas used to make $5 million per home football game, but that number increased to $7 million per game last year…and they keep adding seats to thee stadium and adding upgraded seating areas that require donations, so the number keeps going up.

Of the $82 million generated by the team last season, $30 million came from donations by alumni and fans to get in line for season tickets. Another $33 million came from ticket sales to seven home games at the newly expanded Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, which now fits 101,000 fans.

By our reckoning, the Longhorns cleared $59 million in the season for University of Texas academics and athletics.

  144. Garret December 23, 2009 1:33 pm

From the article on the front page of rivals:

In the four years before Jones’ arrival, SMU signed 16 players ranked as three-star recruits by Rivals.com. Last year, Jones signed seven three-star prospects and one four-star player. This year, he has 13 commitments from three-star prospects.

  184. Wes December 23, 2009 2:51 pm

    D1,

C’mon, you’ve been there enough to know differing opinions are allowed all the time β€” people like “Fire Reggie” blast me repeatedly with no provocation and I allow it even if it’s often irrelevant to the topic.

I just don’t think it is right to spread lies about people β€” do you?

  185. whitey December 23, 2009 2:55 pm

eh brew, Avis going pick again tonight, so I going put in a good word for you.

The “man-ly” thing would be to go ahead and amend your story – make whatever clarification necessary to complete the story and reduce the controversy on your blog. That is unless you enjoy the trouble and extra hits! 😈

  187. whitey December 23, 2009 2:57 pm

now d1 and al in trouble. you guys neva learn!! be like Mikey and me. hahahahahahhaaaaa

    Wes,

If you had been so interested in Stephen’s blog prior to yesterday, you would have known the scoops on the situation before writing the article!

Not a journalist (or your editor) but maybe a little more time spent fact-finding than playing “defense” might be in order? That’s my opinion!

  190. whitey December 23, 2009 2:59 pm

brew, you realize that this is #189 and if some of our lurkers posts, we going past the 2nd century very fast today.

    D1,

I heard the same thing y’all did last summer; that wasn’t any new “scoops on the situation.” Yesterday’s story was written in the time frame of when Andrew Manley made his decision on Saturday β€” what did he have on the table then, and why did he choose New Mexico State?

And btw, be careful what you wish for … I just “spent a little more time fact-finding,” and like someone commented last night, sometimes the less said, the better …

al, on another subject, you coming ova next week for the day????

  231. huh? December 23, 2009 3:58 pm

    no guebos dat Wes…

So, I posted this and it never got published:

UH offered manley as early as his junior year in high school.
That offer was on the table for nearly a year. UH kept pressing him for a decision which he did not give.

UH made it known that they were only going to offer one qb for 2010. A year goes by, meanwhile, like any other college they needed to continue shopping for a qb since Manley did not give an answer and instead tested the waters abroad for other scholie offers.

UH discovers another prospect that would fit the bill. They go tell Manley do you want the offer or not. No answer. They tell Manley that they will now go ahead and offer this new prospect and whomever commits first will be there qb recruit of the year 2010.

Again, Manley sits on it and does not commit. Meanwhile during the summer this other prospect calls the staff and commits to the University of Hawaii. At that point, UH has fulfilled their need for a qb recruit in year 2010.

Meanwhile, no other offers come in the door the young Manley. UH tells him they have filled their needs for 2010. However, they are willing to bring him in as a greyshirt if he is willing to sit out the first year. Thus, a scholie for January 2011 was tendered if he wanted to become a warrior.

Manley weighed his situation realizes he wants to play in 2010. Along come the NMSU coaches who offer him a scholie for 2010.

While it is right that there was no 2010 scholie available two weeks ago for Manley, one was there for his taking for nearly a year. He chose to wait and even when a time frame for a decision was given he chose to hold off.

It is the way this writer worded it all is what is getting folks up in a roar.

The bottom line is that Manley has an opportunity to pursue his dream on the mainland. It may not be USC or Notre Dame, but, it is what it is. My thinking was that all along he wanted to go to the mainland and not stay in Hawaii. Otherwise, he would have taken the scholie a long time age when it was available.

then Wes comes in with this later:

    Wes:

    December 23rd, 2009 at 3:25 pm
“First-come, first-served” is different from a specific offer made to one person. If this scholarship offer was truly his, why did they so quickly give it to someone else?

Apparently, it was not “his” to begin with.

I asked Manley what other offers he had, and what he told me is what appeared in the article.

So, seeing the aforementioned comment by Wes I reply with this, which also didn’t get posted.

Waiting over a year is not so quickly.

If you asked a girl to your prom and she puts you off for over a year, do you wait in front of the telephone all that time or do you get the message and move on? after a year mind you?

and they did give him an opportunity before they offered the other guy a scholarship to give a verbal commit. Had he done so they would not have offered the other qb.

    no guebos dat guy.

  232. al December 23, 2009 4:00 pm

nah, i am lurking in the dark.

yah, next week probably wednesday if the flts look lean. pick me up.

  233. Willie December 23, 2009 4:00 pm

Wes, what I wish for is that you do your research on ALL high school quarterbacks that have played before making a statement that someone might be the most “college ready” QB to come out of Hawaiβ€˜i, maybe ever. I still think so, to this day. So, if you do your research properly there is nothing that can come out of this that I would regret. The facts will speak for itself. You stand by your opinion and I equally opose & disagree with this view.

In all sincerity I do wish you Happy Holidays as I enjoy reading your blog. You bring great insight covering the high school sports scene. We just happen to differ on this subject.

O.K. pau for me on this for the year, Mele Kalikimaka Wes.

  234. al December 23, 2009 4:00 pm

    ok…going cook rice.

  235. whitey December 23, 2009 4:07 pm

boy, i wish i could post like huh? i give him high marks and on top of that he get sum huge quebos. thank you for updating. the part that those who think that we are trying to subotage Manley are not very smart. At no time, did any of us try to discredit him, but all of us wished him well. What most of us objected to was the idea that UH neva offered him a scholie, which is why I said it is a bunch of crock. Do you see anyone discrediting Manley?? I don’t, most think very highly of him, but he made his decision, so we all moved on.

How long does a comment stay in moderation before it is posted. I posted a comment at 4:07 and 4:11 p.m. and it still is awaiting moderation. I had nothing bad to say about anybody so why is my comment not posted.

    Just wondering

    Wow Utah is killing UCLA

  257. Wes December 23, 2009 5:55 pm

@Huh?, Kama Krab: Sorry, your comments are posted now, with responses. Mostly due to “Fire Reggie” and others like him, we had to go to the moderation format because unruly posters like him were swearing, making inappropriate personal attacks (on me and others), etc. Also trying to spread lies/rumors (“PunGirl”).

So, unfortunately, I gotta moderate and approve/post comments whenever I have time.

@Al: Not a threat β€” just that like Royvic posted last night, sometimes some things are better left out of print.

@Whitey: I try to qualify my opinions, first by emphasizing that it is only an opinion, and also by saying things like “in the past 35 years” and “maybe” ever. Kaipo Spencer and Duane Akina were before my time, same w/Milton Holt. I understand that. But people just ignore the disclaimers and get all hu-hu about my opinion anyway.

Anyway, appreciate the kind words and Happy Holidays to you and yours …

@Royvic: Mahalo for the support, appreciate it. I also can appreciate the passion here, being a UH football season ticket holder since 1982 myself. I’m an alum, and nobody wants to see Hawaiβ€˜i succeed more than I do …

Fleas! Wow Laulau. I guess it could have been worst! πŸ™‚

  259. tommui December 23, 2009 6:06 pm

Unfortunately the reporter made the UH look silly by implication that the only offer Manley had was from NMSU.

It may be true that his only offer this week was from NMSU is somewhat akin to saying “but Judge, I’m innocent – I did not beat up my wife this week”

  260. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:09 pm

second time is a charm, no wait, third time, the video played without a hitch-no pauses, sound-clear from all three participants, the audio matched the speaker, great experience.

    bulla,

oh boy oh boy. how i wish your son would come play for us. I remember watching him last year against us. that kid was AWESOME. just FABULOUS. i am so looking forward to snow. let it snow. let it snow. let it snow.

  262. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:14 pm

Whitey Utah and UCLA, what game you watching? Utah took out Cal, BYU smashed Oregon State, BCS taking a beating from the non BCS. No wonder TCU and Boise State got no BCS takers for a bowl game.

  263. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:18 pm

mbb up next, UNLV vs UH. After 4 straight cream puffs we finally find out how much our Warriors have improved as a bb team as they face an up tempo team. Oh, we were hyped as a up tempo team, good match up for the warriors.

  264. Wes December 23, 2009 6:21 pm

    Tommui,

Or, “Whaddaya mean? I gave my wife a present LAST Christmas …”

  265. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:21 pm

The ESPN coverage is great for tourism, lots of nice scenes of Hawaii. I hope this Classic becomes as successful as the Maui Classic, good basketball and lots of exposure for tourism.

  266. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:25 pm

UH getting off more shots, unfortunately lots of bricks being tossed.

  267. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:26 pm

    Both teams shooting bricks!

  268. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:28 pm

1-13 for both teams combined, bad shooting night so far.

  269. Ralph December 23, 2009 6:34 pm

everyone must be enjoying the mbb game. Since they are shooting bricks, here is a song by Sissel Kyrkjebo that I think you will like as wait for the men to start playing better bb. It’s Sukiyaki in Norwegian.

I look at those three, d-1, whitey and al, and I see three peas in a pod. All the same. All thinking alike. Three fleas. So it didn’t surprise me they teamed up and attacked Wes.

This is support? I think not!

  277. whitey December 23, 2009 7:21 pm

Redzone, I think you are correct because he is one of 3 or 4 who will not be playing for UCLA in their upcoming bowl. Yesterday’s article also said that the coach sent Hasiak home.

    WARNING: BASKETBALL SPOILERS BELOW

whitey: Not good. 55-31 with 11:35 left in the 2nd half. UNLV is playing very, very well. UH could be playing better, but a lot of its struggles is due to UNLV’s dominance. The Rebels look like a legit Top 25 team, and we’re just being outclassed. Good effort by UH, though, it’s not great but it’s not shameful.

  285. Garret December 23, 2009 7:54 pm

Mrs. Momo is *not* enjoying her birthday night at the mbb game. Update I saw was UNLV 55, UH 31.

  287. Garret December 23, 2009 7:59 pm

I think that someone was celebrating the bowl outcomes vs. BCS teams. However, it looks to me that the MWC is 2-0 vs. the Pac-10 and the Big East beat a C-USA team. So, the result won’t be looked at like an anti-BCS outcome…it would be looked at as a pro-MWC outcome.

I would like the WAC bowl record to give a nice prestige boost to the WAC, which would help for next season. Unfortunately, the MWC beat the WAC in the WAC’s only bowl game so far–so, the MWC is 3-0 and the WAC is 0-1. For that reason, I’m going to cheer for Nevada tomorrow and will even cheer extra hard for BSU over TCU.

Al, Huh, Willie, Whitey, D1, etc.

All you guys are right on the the money about Wes and his Manley obsession. When he wrote the infamous “most college ready” article, I nearly dropped my computer. I don’t want to waste your time repeating it all here again (it’s all on his blog), but its obvious that Wes cannot write a factual or professional article when it comes to Manley. It’s almost like there is some kine man-crush or something getting in the way of his judgment. I hope he gets over it.

    hmmmm.

do i want to be a flea or pea?
i guess i would choose to be a flea since at least it has a brain.

and if i were a pea, why not be three peas in a pod with whitey and d1. haha.

it is funny because someone who is the very one known for putting others down publicly and unabashedly can now derail those whom appear to be putting some folks down.

i find that most entertaining. just when i was really and sincerely beginning to like the guy. i’ll still give him a second chance.

however, before i put this to bed. my comments and opinions were in no way meant to demean this young man, andrew manley. he did what he felt was best for him at the time. i, too, wish him well and will follow his career.

my concerns were that the post on the other side did not include all of the facts as they unfolded. i just wanted to make sure that the truth be told. i don’t even fault wes at all. this is what he thought he heard and that is what he reported. so be it.

i know what transpired, this from learning from several sources close to the situation who don’t make up stories. everyone is entitled to their own opinions as this is decreed by law in the freedom of speech edict.

i won’t belabor the issue any longer nor anymore afterall ’tis the season to be jolly!

merry christmas to all and to all a good night.

  312. Jason December 23, 2009 8:34 pm

Jason, in your opinion, what does UH need to make their mbb program move up a notch???

whitey: Not sure it can with the program’s current vision. Just like in football, it all comes down to recruiting, and how you implement a system around your players. This is not a basketball state, so we’re not going to generate local players to feed into the program like with football or volleyball. We need to recruit the Mainland, but with 300+ Division I schools, many of which have a better basketball pedigree than we do, it’s going to be difficult to get good players here.

In Riley’s 20 years, it seems to me the best years we had were when we got special stars that we could build the offense around, and good players to supplement them in their set roles. A.C. and Alika, obviously, were the best duo we’ve had, but don’t forget there were good players around them to supplement their talents, like Erin Galloway and Micah Kroeger. Predrag Savovic had Carl English as his wingman, and good point guard play with Mark Campbell, guys in the post like Haim Shimonovic and Phil Martin.

I know people want players with more athleticism, guys that can jump through the gym. The problem I see with that is these are street ballers who don’t have the skill set needed to play in this offense. So either commit to a more open-ended, athletic style of offense, or stick to the flex motion and recruit players for that offense.

If we’re going to go with the athletic people, then be prepared to teach them the skills they need to succeed. UH players probably lack these skills because the team has to take so much time perfecting the offense. It’s complex in its patterns and recognition, just like the R&S is complex. And just like UH football struggles in its implementation of the R&S because of the little things like poor route running, the flex motion often does not succeed because of half-second mistimings in the cuts and breaks. To succeed with the offense, you need to work on that timing, so less time is spent on skill development. You’d like players to already have those skills at this point, but the way the game is played nowadays, I don’t see it. Heck, I don’t see it at the NBA level, let alone college and high school. It’s not a fundamentals game anymore.

So yeah, if you’re going to go with athletic players, then change the offense to something simpler to implement. But here’s a caveat: Everybody playing basketball is athletic nowadays, and while we might be able to “out-athleticize” some WAC schools, I’m not sure we’ll be able to do that against the better mid-major schools. Again, we’re going to be tapping into the same markets, and they have more established basketball programs. I’m not saying we’ll always be outclassed athletically at that level, but I’m concerned with the risk.

That’s why I prefer the latter situation, going back to what Riley did and recruit players that fit the system. Yes, that may mean we have players that are less athletic, and that may be a concern the way the game is transitioning as a whole. But I think by looking for talented skill players, we can find diamonds in the rough who are more athletic than people realize, but they got overlooked because they aren’t the jump-out-the-gym players teams want nowadays. I liked players like Matt Lojeski and Michael Kuebler, they were “sneaky” athletic and obviously very, very skilled with high basketball IQs. We could throw them into this system and they got it quickly. And I honestly believe when this offense is working, it acts like an equalizer. It’s not easy to defend because of the cuts and screens, and when you have players that know the offense really well, you can really open up the playbook so it’s not as predictable.

Along with the latter point about the offense, I think we need to look at international players too. It’s going to be hard because of the way the NCAA is (irrationally) cracking down on things, and we have had some problems with ineligible players. But if we do our due diligence, I think we can get some good players. Of course, part of that is getting more support for the compliance department. Amanda Paterson cannot do it alone.

I’m sure some may agree with some points I made (I think everyone wants to see us tap the international field again, in all sports), and I know some will disagree with some (mainly, my devotion to the flex motion and my recruiting philosophy). But that’s what I think is going to be necessary to field a competitive team. Matching Riley Wallace’s 55% win percentage is, to me, a reasonable goalβ€”I’m hopeful we can do better, but I’m not convinced we can. I don’t necessarily think we’ll build this program to a point where we’re a decent mid-major threat every year, so what can we do to at least put out a good product?

(P.S. If UH football can develop to the point where it can funnel GOOD money to all of the other athletic programs, then that will certainly help. That’s when I’ll increase my hopes and dreams for any program not on the gridiron or volleyball court.)

  313. OldDiver December 23, 2009 8:36 pm

I remember the UH vs Weber State game, Eastman appeared to be much shorter than our O-line men but our guys could not get any leverage on him. What’s his secret? And please share that secret with the other linemen.

  314. Ralph December 23, 2009 8:40 pm

Whitey for starters, i’d say the mbb team needs a true point guard who can handle the ball (minimize turn overs against the press) and run the offense. The flex requires movement, he got to orchestra the movement and take command. secondly, we need players who can shoot off the dribble, create space and shoot. third, we need a true post who can play defense, get rebounds and is a good passer. Petra is a decent passer, but lacks speed and quickness to play defense in the paint and get rebounds against athletic big man.

  315. whitey December 23, 2009 8:43 pm

ok, this is to satisfy the minority, first of all I did not say anything about A Manley’s football tuture, but wished him well. He did not write the news article and only stated what he was asked. The major problem with the article is that it insinuates that UH did nothing to try and recruit him. IMHO, if the news article was just about Manley’s commitment to NMSU and how they recruited him, no problem. But when UH football is brought into the article and made to look like the fall guy, that is not news. With that said, that’s it!!!

  316. OldDiver December 23, 2009 8:45 pm

Talking about shooting off the dribble, do our player have the green light to shoot off the dribble after just a couple of passes? The ten passes then panic to get a shot off is very frustrating.

  317. whitey December 23, 2009 8:54 pm

Jason and Ralph, thanks. Both of you are fans of the UH bb game and this is the same with the Tsaikos in fb. We are not the coaches nor do any of us profess to be experts, but we do see sumthings in the same light. That is one of the major reason we take great interest in UH fb. The fans are like the 12th player which is what many always say, but they forget that also the fans see things alike and hope that the team sees it in the same way. I used to luv Rainbow bb with Red Rocha caused he always had an exciting team. When they fired him, I lost interest in them. I think both of you see that bb should be exciting whether winning or losing and not one you sit and fall asleep. Haven’t seen the Rainbows do that, so still no interest in watching UH mbb.

Bad game for UH tonight. We were completely out played by UNLV. Also am I the only one to see this but every time Hiram is in the game we have to slow the tempo down on EVERY play? When Lay and Williams are in they at least try to run and slow down when they know the defense has settled in. So frustrating. Thanks Annodahdave and uhfan808 for the Tix. See you guys tomorrow. Go WAC!

  344. Kekoa December 23, 2009 11:01 pm

βρΡω808: So you pulled a ‘Kekoa’ huh? Ok that does it. We are now officially at war! Check this out when you wake up mister Brewmeister!

Now according to today’s diplomacy there is a long period of dialogue between us. Sanctions, and all the trade stuff stops. Then more peace talks, followed by saber rattling by both sides. About 10 years from now there will be an invasion and bombing. Lives will be lost. That sort of thing.

What if we just play a football game to decide? My guys against your guys in a winner take all contest. So first we start with peace talks because it’s Christmas…we got Santa on our side!…Your pick.

  345. Kekoa December 23, 2009 11:07 pm

Whitey ~ Peace on you! Another fine mess you’ve gotten us into! Hehehe…you had me rolling in the aisles earlier! Merry Christmas you crazy old hoot.

  346. Jason December 23, 2009 11:19 pm

royvic: All due respect, I don’t think you should be calling anybody stupid when multiple people have made clear what their complaint is with Wes’ article.

    The point is this:

Manley said it was the only scholarship offer he received for next season.

He said Hawai’i offered him a chance to attend classes part time in the fall (paying his own way and not playing football) with the possibility of receiving a full scholarship in January 2011 β€” a process called “grayshirting” β€” but he opted to take New Mexico State’s immediate scholarship offer instead.

This part of the article does not mention that UH had offered a full scholarship beforehand. The complaint is that some may read between the lines and assume that UH’s only involvement is that they offered the possible grayshirt, and that UH quote-unquote “dropped the ball” in recruiting Manley by only getting involved at the last minute. The claim is that adding the details about the scholarship offer would prevent anyone from making such a negative assumption against UH.

Now, if you don’t see their point, then that’s one thing, but there’s no need to go disparaging people like that.

And for those critical of Wes’ articleβ€”I personally think you were wrong to bring it here. I agree with your complaint, but talk about it on Wes’ blog. But more importantly, there was no need to attack Wes personally. I’m not his biggest fan, and I’m not a fan of other journalists at both papers, but there’s no need for anyone to get nasty over these things.

Considering this is the Christmas season (and even if it weren’t), I have to say I’m disappointed in the way people have acted today. And some of this comes from people I respect. I didn’t want to get involved in this whole thing, but it’s starting to get really out of hand.

  347. Slugger December 23, 2009 11:28 pm

are you watching Leahey and Leahey. excellent show. thinking about it all, reflecting…..
I guess I only got thanks to give to June Jones.

Thank you June Jones. It was a great run with you. Colt Brennan wasn’t himself at the Sugar Bowl. I heard that from a very reliable
player. Plus, with what you had let out, alot was going through his mind.

Coach Mack can do what you did. Just gotta have the voice to say it like you did. The difference will mean one or two extra wins.

Thats the difference each season. The little things.

I would like to wish all the Warriors and coaches a Merry Christmas.

Hasiak. Welcome home. Tomorrow is another day! No shame in making the best of the rest of your life.

so, Bighilo, does this mean that you have forgiven June Jones? You coming to the game, if you are, bring your five books and get more autographs from him.

  354. Bulla December 24, 2009 12:28 am

    good night my Tsaiko ohana,

once again, don’t believe everything you hear…… it is a sad day when those that you believe to be honorable….are not. he said / she said……accountability is all that matters. if can can, if no can….don’t lie…and that is the hard part. for those of you who got my email, you know what i am referring to.

it will all come out later, but for now……The Beast WILL NOT be a Warrior…..he did everything he was supposed to and the ball got dropped, and dropped badly. now i have a better understanding, first hand, of why things are the way they are in Manoa……….wow……..that says it all.

good night, God Bless, tomorrow is a new day πŸ™‚

  355. LizKauai [iMac] Happy Holidays! December 24, 2009 12:33 am

Ok. Finally got to see the JJ interview. Wow- great show! I feel all inspired again. What a vision!
The Redskins need Coach Jones (there, I said it). And how great would that be for Colt!

Nitey nite for sure this time!

  356. Ralph December 24, 2009 12:35 am

sorry to hear that Bulla. At least you and the mrs. get to see snow again. lol.

  357. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 24, 2009 1:00 am

Too tired to comment on UH basketball game because we stayed for the last game between Charleston and SMU – a really thriller. However, I have to ask: Who is Wes? And why all the stink talk here?

  358. Pomai December 24, 2009 4:11 am

With all of the information going back an forth about who is committing to who/where, I think for myself I will not pay any attention to recruiting news until say March, 2010.

  359. Pomai December 24, 2009 4:51 am

Wow just now watched JJ’s interview. Say what you want but he dose have vision.

I have decided not to do Christmas this year, but to all of you I wish that have a Merry Christmas and a very good New Year.

  360. Wes December 24, 2009 5:06 am

@Whitey: I’m chuckling because at 8:23 p.m., you say, “Me, I let it go already …” then 20 minutes later, you throw another dart. UH’s standing offer on Saturday β€” not the one six months ago that vanished into the night β€” was part of the “news” for this day, because that is the one Manley ultimately had to weigh.

What happened half a year ago no longer mattered when it came time to make the decision on Saturday.

@Jason: Mahalo. Appreciate your comment very much …

  361. Garret December 24, 2009 5:35 am

I wasn’t sure who to cheer for tomorrow until I read about Ault saying that since this is a WAC town we “better” be cheering for Reno.

If he had shown up with more than his “100-ish” supporters and was asking for the hometown fans to join in, then maybe.

    d1shima,

Did Ault really say that? That makes it really, really hard for me to cheer for their team to win the Hawaii Bowl. Nevada was also clear about wanting to make it so that UH did not make the Hawaii Bowl so that they could go, which as a UH fan didn’t exactly endear their team to me.

  362. Bulla December 24, 2009 6:03 am

    merry merry christmas to everyone,

drive safely today, watch out for all of those last minute shoppers (like me) who are out there. may everyone have peace in their homes and joy in their hearts over the next few days. we have so many things to be thankful for, let us be a blessing to those who are not as fortunate as us. there are so many out there that are really struggling, let’s see if we can do just one (1) random act of kindness in the next two days…..and we can start something positive πŸ™‚

  363. bighilofan2 December 24, 2009 6:10 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everwhere.

Ault…no wonder Jerry Glanville wanted to rearrange his view in a very personal way.

was chuckling when i heard daa UH band in Nev unis.saw JJ. rent a band. that was good.

  364. kama krab December 24, 2009 6:15 am

    Bulla,

Say it ain’t so Bulla say it ain’t so. What the hell happened? I thought Mack had an open door policy for ANY former Hawaii prep student athlete that wanted to come back to play for the Home Team. Again I ask WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?

This is just another wishy washy situation that has put a black eye on the program and the sad part is now it has happened to one of our own. The people that actually dig into what pockets we have left to give to the program we love and to have this happen to the Beast is just a bunch of BS. Sorry for the anger but Bulla your boy deserves everything that he gets. The boy is a dam had worker and to have U.H. turn it’s back on him is a bunch of CRAP.

I guess all I gotta say is God bless my friend and all the best to the BEAST. Just gotta say I will probably be really ticked off the rest of the day cause stuff like this should not happen to a kid like your son.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years.=(

  365. whitey December 24, 2009 6:16 am

    Merry Christmas Tsaikos.

  366. bighilofan2 December 24, 2009 6:21 am

    bulla

i read the email. i am soo sorry, brudda bulla. woulda wanted Ryan to be a Warrior. but i totally understand Ryan’s point of view. because the truth did set me free. da before season speakee, and da now speakee.

Merry Christmas Bulla, Misses Bulla. and for the Beast, I would like to thank you very much for doing your part in trying to be the Beast of Hawaii. I woulda loved to see you in a Hawaii uniform. You’ve earned it, young man, and the proof is in your continued desire to be a Warrior.
    for that I thank you.

Coaches Mack, Miano and Cal: you all gotta do a better job of communicating with each other when you’re communicating with the outside world. while i’m not gonna let miscues get in the way of my hoping for a better day for our team, you did do a mis Q here. anyway, you probably got a reason, and maybe a good reason, but a personal visit will probably go along way in trying to make things right.

  367. Bulla December 24, 2009 6:26 am

    kazz,

things happen, that’s life…you got my email, you saw the letter i got…..it doesn’t add up, and that is alright. it is another example of management styles at manoa. the beast will be fine, i’ll have a long talk with him today; it’s times like this when as a father i wish i could take the pain away, the disappointment, the broken dream….it’s all good. great things will result from this…..the beast did not get where he is at because everything was given to him, hard work, hard work and more hard work pays dividends. apparently the DL is in fine shape for the next few years for UH, and we wish them all the best.

to all our Tsaiko ohana, just be positive and keep ‘the beast’ in your prayers, he is resilient, and will come back with a vengeance from this one. merry merry christmas…..but one caveat, don’t believe everything you hear or see, it could be an illusion………..

  368. d1ε³Ά December 24, 2009 6:27 am

  370. bighilofan2 December 24, 2009 6:35 am

My view on the past with June, and the future. Its a little complicated.

The Stadium authority is one entity. You got the government, and you got the internals. like the security. get people all over the mainland storming the field after the game, orderly chaos, but its part of the game. us? we get big palookaz walking down to the bottom of the stands and blocking the view of the game of the lower seated attendeez for the last 5 minutes. sooo, you gotta deal wit dat mindset.

den you get the Legislacha. day take forever fo make a decision,
expechally in good times, day all gotta make speeches for give out
moolah fo soap dishes and stuggs. and day like talkee longtime so all da relatives watch da tv and say das my uncle or aunty yada yada.

den you get da Herman Frazier, who neva had authority for give out dat
kine money and the UH bigwigs neva no how fo put dat kine big deal togedda, help Fumbler along sooo day all waited till was too late.

sooo, long story short, once you lose certified pure you’ve lost certified pure. πŸ˜€

I understand digging out under doze circumstances.

  371. Kekoa (iPhone) December 24, 2009 6:36 am

    good morning Kekoa, whitey.

i too am disappointed wit da most recent Manoa SNAFU.

Internal SNAFUUZ is not unusual. Jason Campbell has been through many many offensive coaches during his Redskins career. coaches too. i don’t know whats happening to the Redskins. they got annihilated last week.

i and da Warriors can relate. Florida, Georgia, Texas. We would have been in serious trouble if we played those kinds of teams. Annihilated?! treating a all conference D man as a walk ons, when da word before season was wat it wuz and he produces all season long, is nuts nuts nutz. at least i woulda used betta words of encouragement if wuz me.
but then i don’t have the luxury of making a kazillion and i don’t have the luxury of making my living by using my brains and mout. πŸ˜†
I’m gonna remember this SNAFU in September and USC.

but I’ll tell you what is really bothering me. I’m tinking we gota a buncha PETA types running da program.

  387. kama krab December 24, 2009 7:58 am

    Man sorry everybody,

But still pissed at want happen to Ryan. It fell’s like one of our son’s just got ripped off. I don’t now the story at all but just reading bulla’s post, it doesn’t sound good and that is bad for Mack and the coaches. We all know that there is no head of the program right now. Mack is a damn chicken without a head and he needs to find it before it is to late.

Once again I’m sorry but I will let out all the things I have tried to keep in because of the respect I have for the program and Mack but I gotta say enough is enough. You want to stiff a boy that has worked hard to see his dreams come true and to have it dashed because of a bunch of donkeys that can’t get it straight, that’s just terrible. I feel bad for this young man because he is one of these kids where you can say “He deserves it”. You pass him up once, I guess that’s ok but to pass him up again, I gotta say screw you.

Once again I am very sorry but I have known you bulla for about 4 years now and have watched your son ever since. The boy has grown leaps and bounds since then and I am very happy that he has done his thing. I will agree that everything happens for a reason and that God has a plan for everyone but I will say I will never and I say never look at this program the same way especially under the rein of Coach Mack.

    GO Warriors
    GO Wildcats

I remember when our son played Little League baseball, the coach said, when you draft a player, you drafted the entire family, parents and subs who would be needed for support.

After following the Eastman clan these last few years, it’s clear that te entire Eastman Obama is a class act. The Beast leaves everything on the field. His parents were great hosts to the Weber State team when they visited last year. Through it all, Bulla continued to fully remain a strong Warrior supporter.

UH coaches would be missing a great opportunity if they don’t welcome the Beast and his family into the Warrior ohana.

Just a personal opinion. Never met the Beast or Bulla
