Is the 64 player travel roster a WAC rule?? It is a travel roster or game roster?? What if we send up more guys during the week and keep those up there but they don’t suit up for the game??

Hmmm … David Farmer as a Slotback… that would be fun to see if he should get wide open and catch a ball with enough room to get his momentum going against a defender 50 lbs lighter. It’s good to see him being utilized more.

Re travel roster – I bet we’re the only program in the country with that problem, since everyone else either goes home between games or doesn’t have 2 road games scheduled back-to-back. What was Mr Benson and the WAC thinking when they scheduled this?! ❗ grrrrr.

DrDoc and WassupDoc – rest up today and for the next couple of weeks, OK? We want you both back healthy and ready to play come next t-gate!

Travel roster decisions are always difficult, especially when there are so many worthy candidates and the team stays on the mainland between games. The team could send them even if injured, which I’d prefer than sending 2 less players than the limit. Or, the coaches might anticipate that a player or two might get injured, and the injured player could be sent back to Hawaii for rehab.

If bonding is an important part of the long road trip, which is understandable and would be great for the team, then I’d hate to see players sent home. Maybe if the team brought Pilares (who can learn more about the offense watching on the sidelines and listening to the coaches instruction), then they could send Clore to El Paso if he was healthy and another player got hurt in the Utah State game.

The other consideration is that even though a players *says* he is healthy enough to play in a week, that doesn’t mean that he should rush back from injury if his body isn’t ready. I would trust the trainers to be a good judge of this, but sometimes it is hard to project rehab more than a week ahead. I would generally weigh on the side of caution, as a fully healthy player might be more valuable to send than a partially injured (and vulnerable to re-injury) player. Also, with no scout team next week, the backup players will have to serve as scout players. Injured players cannot practice fully, which decreases the bodies at practice.

Students in James Brabant’s fifth- and sixth-grade split class at Patton Elementary School were star struck Oct. 14 when Detroit Lions linebacker Jordon Dizon visited.

But the pro athlete wasn’t just there to dish about football. Dizon, wearing his No. 57 jersey, also gave the students, many in Lions attire, a pep talk on the importance of staying in school.

“Education can take you far,” said Dizon, who grew up in Hawaii and eventually earned an economics degree from the University of Colorado. “Without education, you can’t think. You can’t write. You can’t make sense. You’re going to use every subject you use in school.”

Now with two proven weapons behind center, McMackin says the team will continue their two quarterback approach with Alexander and Inoke Funaki.

“If you have something that causes people problems and doesn’t foul up your rhythm, then why not?”

Mcmackin also says Ryan Mouton will continue to play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

“He’s a key player on defense that’s where his future is, but he’s a play maker and I really feel that he brought the offense, especially the receivers to a higher level, and we’re going to continue playing him both ways.”

As some have stated, maybe they should take the full roster this week based on who’s healthy this week and evaluate things post-game for next week…cannot predict what the injury situation will be then.

It’s an unusual circumstance that requires out-of-the box thinking; unfortunately I can only provide Jack-in-the-Box solutions 🙁

Eh!!! just stick with your rule of playing the physically able to play and not the walking wounded. After all, the physically able to play guys if I’m not mistaken have earned their chance to be considered to be added to the travel roster. That’s life, and the guys who can’t perform understand that rule.

re wounded Warriors or Warriors otherwise on the sideline- I like what Greg Alexander had to say about the importance of being able to watch and learn from the sideline. I also like his attitude and demeanor. The guy is a team player and a winner.

The last time I was in El Paso (4 years ago when we drove from the Bay Area to Austin, TX) we found a pretty big Mall that was near our hotel (we spent a night in El Paso both going to Austin and driving back). I know that ST goes shopping a lot, so I’m guessing that Mall will be a popular visiting spot.

And I know there were ads for a casino that was within driving distance when we were staying in El Paso…

OK bbl. Trying to write my performance review. I hate doing this stuff.

Don’t forget that a solid backup QB is needed because QBs rarely make it through a season without having to miss significant time and even games due to injury. Especially for a team like UH whose QBs have been absorbing an alarming amount of hits, even if Mac wasn’t going to find a role for Inoke he probably would still get significant time.

It makes sense to keep Inoke involved, especially since his strengths are so different than Alexander’s. That forces the defensive coordinator to prepare for two very different styles of play. Plus, if Alexander gets an injury then Inoke is ready to play with game reps already.

Oklahoma State’s #1 booster sure lost a LOT of money this year…

I am not sure this country should follow the advice of a man that has lost over $2 billion so far this year. But then again, some of the nation’s most powerful men have lost far more than that in just the past few weeks.

And thanks to Pickens’ investing decisions, the fund has dropped in value by over 60% so far this year.

It is no wonder the investing firm’s phones are ringing off their hooks with folks looking to pull their money out of the fund. About half of BP Capital’s investors want out of their positions. Their capital withdraw has taken the fund’s size down to just $400 million.

It is a strong blow to the oil maverick’s ego.

Pickens promises to make the $2 billion back, but it is going to be much, much harder now that he has less funding to work with.

Instead of adding more money to his energy investments, Pickens is donating it to his beloved Oklahoma State and its football team. He just wrote a $65 million check earmarked to help finish the school’s football stadium.

Plus, Pickens said he would be returning the $125 million he managed in a hedge fund for the school. When he started the investment, it was worth $165 million.

The Rams sure understand how UH felt after the Fresno State game.

The New England Patriots committed 22 penalties in their first six games this season. The Pats’ total still is 22 — a league low — after they pitched a perfect game Sunday in turning aside the St. Louis Rams 23-16 in Foxborough, Mass.

That’s right: New England was assessed zero penalty yards. “Never ever, ever, ever played a perfect team before,” Rams guard Richie Incognito quipped. “That’s all I am going to say on that one.”

The one penalty that was called against the Pats — offensive holding in the fourth quarter — was declined by the Rams because quarterback Matt Cassel was sacked for an 8-yard loss on the play.

The Rams were flagged 12 times (three were declined) and set back 63 yards. “We did commit some penalties,” coach Jim Haslett conceded Monday after watching the game tape. “I thought there should have been some calls on the other side.”

Haslett noted three instances in which he felt New England should’ve been hit with a personal foul: a facemask on quarterback Marc Bulger, a late hit on Bulger and an out-of-bounds hit on cornerback Fakhir Brown after an interception.

Taking 62 along and letting two join later wouldn’t be a bad way around the situation. By the way, is it particularly difficult for reserve players to take the place of the scout team? Or maybe even swapping out Austin for, say, Rausch or Graunke as the scout QB if needed to free up more travel slots.

Sorry LizKauai – can’t forget Santos! But even though he’s a senior and all, does he usually go with the travel squad? There’s only so many QBs you can take along, and if Austin is one of the more prominent scout QBs, where does that leave him?

As for JJ, well, we seem to be doing OK without him. It was hardly good times when he left, but still. Would HF have resigned? Would Cooke Field ever have been turfed properly? Would we be necessarily better than 4-4 right now? Would Mack have been in line for head coach when JJ finally did leave the head coaching spot? Would we appreciate the football program in the same way we do now? Would recruiting still be restricted?

I don’t think the seniors are any worse off without JJ. As for the offense, Bess and RGM would’ve left anyway. And “those most likely to succeed in the NFL” still seem as solid as ever.

Don’t get me wrong — I totally agree with you about the $400,000 he owes. A contract’s a contract, and when you say that _HF_ let you out of it by spoken agreement…

I still think Mack should put both Inoki and Greg in at the same time. It would force the defense to put on db/lb on them and open up the field. Even if no play is directed in their direction, it forces the defense to defend against that possibility. Seen the throws Alexander made during the Nevada game, he had at least 2 throws where he was throwing off his back foot and still got the ball there, amazing. Guy has an arm.

d1 – i finally caught the joke this morning, duh

Y’know, Farmer aligned as a slotback to create mismatches in the secondary starts to sound a bit like a tight end. Maybe not quite so tight. But you put a big blocker over there who can also catch and run, and isn’t that pretty much a tight end with alignment anxiety?

I hope that Ron Lee shakes things up. I like what they are doing with Mouton. Get your athletes involved in ways that that they can contribute. Get Farmer out there where he can use his hands. Put Inoke and Alexander in at the same time and run some serious misdirection. Put in some plays that get LWJ involved in ways where he can use his skills – as opposed to giving him shovel passes once he is already half tackled. We really haven’t seen anything too surprising thus far as far as the kind of plays called. Last year you could line up in the same set almost every down and just say, “this is what we do and we are going to out-execute you.” So far we haven’t had the route runners or the passers to do that. (Neither does JJ this year)

One thing we haven’t seen this year is many long plays. Pilares has the longest run at 34 yards. Lane has the longest reception at 53 yards. Nevada had two runs of greater than 60 yards against us. Fresno had an 80 yarder. SJSU had a 77 yard completion. Our D has been pretty solid but has been prone to giving up a few big plays. Our Offense so far has not really threatened to break big plays. As a result we haven’t been able to keep the opposing D honest.

Zatoichi – i noticed the back foot thing too, looks like instincts took over and he just launched it to make a play

Inoke has the tools to do well, he just needs to work on his consistency. Let’s not forget that it was Inoke, not Colt, who was the first QB to lead us to victory against a ranked team on the road. Inoke can run whole series just fine when he’s consistent, and he throws some beautiful spirals when he’s on the money. If he can reduce the receiver lock-on and make quicker decisions on when to start taking off, that’ll be a bunch of improvement right there. I would have no problem with Inoke and Alexander sharing time all of next season. If you have two capable QBs, why not allow yourself to switch between whoever has the hot hand?

The offense should be alined in a modified pistol / I formation working off the shotgun and hand off the ball to LWJ and let hm pick his holes, give him a chance to run in an open space. They can still be in a 4-wide set. the offense ran a similar play last year and LWJ went to the house, but I never saw that play again. I think it was in the Nevada game last year, I kinda laughed when they lined up in the pistol, seemed like they were mocking Nevada but, boy did it work. LWJ hit the hole and in a flash he was in the end zone, 49 yards if memory serves

Good to hear AhSoon is good to go and will be making the trip.

I agree that LWJ needs plays where he can hit the hole, and not be moving toward the sidelines. What happened to the bubble screens? Seems they are more adamant about running shovel passes this year.

Agree with everyone out there. There are personnel moves that will create major mismatches in the secondary. I think now that Alexander is starting the will open a whole of things up, especially if they align Farmer and Mouton as slots, even align LWJ as a slot. That opens the possibility of where a LB has to cover them, don’t think they can on a consistent basis. I really think the key in getting the offense going will be finding a way to keep defenses from speed rushing on the outside, either throwing the rock right where they are rushing from (short screens) and using that speed rush to their advantage. Agreed DPK, once Alexander feels comfortable in this offense it will be lights out.

I’m not sure I agree with the rotation of GA/IF during the game on a series by series basis. The thing with this offense is that it’s partly a rhythm offense. When you rotate two QBs every other series, it’s typically that neither will find a good rhythm. Whereas, if you bring Inoke in only on select downs here and there, it still keeps the D guessing and gives Alexander a good short breather — plus the offense can stay in rhythm. We’ll see how Mack and RLee decide to play it. I’m pretty sure the Utah State D-coord is having fits right now.

Thanks for the tip on the Utah St. streaming video. A few weeks ago this game was listed as being on ESPN Gameplan but I guess they switched it out with the Nevada game.

Thank you, memory still a blur from last year… Watching his high school highlights again LWJ does better when he is running toward the of scrimmage North /South then when he has to run East/West and then turn North/South….Just some random thoughts…

stretchinternet is the same folks who stream the Linfield games. They had a little connectivity problem a few weeks back but generally, it’s been pretty reliable.
The issue I have is with regard to the feed they get from Linfield. The school only has one camera on top of the grandstand and one field-level hand-held so the angles are very limited. In fact, the operator of the top camera seems to only frame the shot to include the Home side of the line of scrimmage so you never have any idea of how the opponent is set before the snap!
Hopefully USU has a little better situation for their feed to stretchinternet; like maybe the K5 feed (never thought I’d ever admit that their feed was a better choice!)

Good RB’s will hit a hole with explosiveness; great ones have patience to allow holes to develop. Indecisive ones get buried for TFL’s.

Re: streaming video- I found the Boise game from a streamer in England on justin.tv on gameday.

That is why a formaton like the Pistol is ideal for LWJ, he gets a better look at the developing holes and running lanes, play action can more effective, read option is there and the 4-wide can still be utilized. This type of formation as a change up, something Inoke Funaki could run. You could even slot up David Farmer as a blocking back to pancake an unsuspecting LB…Think about the possiblities…sigh

I like that UH is starting Alexander; not just that he deserves it, but because Inoke Funaki is flat-out terrific coming off the bench. I’m not just talking about his performance a few games back, but rather his performances over the last 2 years. For whatever the reason he seems to be more energized & plays a much more inspired brand of football as a back-up. This year as a starter (except for one game) he’s been lackluster. Last year he looked razor sharp & looked to be pushing Tyler for playing time.

Duffer I am not to sure but the formation that I was having random thoughts about is for when the offense wanted to change up and do a running play. I had LWJ in mind, you could do play action fake and throw the ball or hand the ball off and let LWJ do his thing or read option some thing similar to what Nevada does, or line up David Farmer in the slot on the side you want the running play to go, or fake the hand off and let LWJ slide out to the flat and flip him a short one. Something, any thing to get him a little running room so he can operate…Again just dreaming of the possiblities….

Only got to see the last quarter of the game but from what little I saw, couple more games as starting QB and I think GA will be a solid RnS QB for UH. Still pulling for Inoke though. O.K. On to Utah St.

Because Kahai is an inside player, I’ve never seen him go to a 2 pt stance. As a Center, they’re at an even bigger disadvantage because one hand is under them when they snap, but that’s why they get the big bucks (ha! not)

I think the pistol formation was used last year during the Fresno St. game. LWJ scored a long td and was successful in that formation. Since they’re making adjustments for different personnel, maybe they can line up in the pistol when LWJ comes in.

Good Evening Everyone:

Finally was able to take some time to read yesterday and today’s blog. Again, mahalo for the kind thoughts & prayers – especially since they worked. SjMacro and Myki – I am going to print out your posts from yesterday and give them to DrDoc tomorrow.

DD stayed in a medically-induced coma from around 2 am Tuesday until 2 pm this afternoon. I arrived about half an hour after he woke up – lucid and able to talk baseball, volleyball, football, and basketball. I couldn’t stay very long because I had to take care of bidness back in town.

Spoke to him a couple of times since then. Around 5 pm, he was able to walk from the bed to the chair (with help) where he sat up for about an hour – the first time since he went into the emergency room Sunday afternoon – and had his first solid food since Sunday at lunch.

He’s doing exceedingly well given the trauma his body went through and is sitting way out on the right hand side of the bell curve.

Barring any problems, tomorrow he’ll be moved out of cardiovascular ICU and onto the general medical/surgical floor. At that point, he’ll be able to receive phone calls directly and have non-family visitors. I’m going to go see him after the Stadium Authority meeting which should be pau by 12:30 or so.

As for me – I’m dealing with a lot of stuff that has to be taken care of both personally & professionally. Still haven’t caught up on my sleep, but at least I am doing so in a bed rather than passing out in the back seat of the car.

In addition to all the medical, family & financial stuff, I have a ton of work to complete plus a couple of very important meetings which cannot be delayed beyond the end of next week.

It didn’t help that I had a near disaster this afternoon when I realized that my left front tire was borderline flat. Fortunately, I was about six blocks away from Lex Brodie’s who took care of it and didn’t charge me a penny.

Nevertheless, I am going to need recreational therapy at the Therapy Sports Bar on Saturday along with the Wahine volleyball games Friday & Saturday nights. Saturday morning, DD will be in rehab until about 11:30 am so I’ll head on out to see him after the UH win.

If nothing else, this has been a huge wakeup call for DD in particular about getting our affairs in order – just in case. DD promises me that he will use his recuperation time at home to get stuff organized.

BACK TO SPORTS: Congrats to the Phillies/National League for winning the World Series. Still, the Rays were phenoms.

Re UH’s offtensive gameplan. I like the duo quarterback system as long as the two collaborate rather than compete.

How are the injuries – has anyone gone on medical leave for the rest of the season?

One last note: The news about Saturn the Dog is not good. We won’t be able to even sit down with the veterinarian to talk about options until after DD gets out of the hospital. Hope Saturn The Dog’s health can wait a week or so.

Again, mahalo for the good thoughts. Have to run to the store and get some cat and dog food or there will be open rebellion amongst the peasants tomorrow morning.

Great to hear about the rapid improvement for Dr. Doc! I hope that both of you can get enough rest…please find some time to rest!

Pete Carroll is sure unhappy with the Pac-10 refs…and I’m surprised that a team like USC seems to be *not* favored by the refs. It sure sounds like Carroll is asking for “clarification” like Mac…and Carroll has 5 years of history to point to.

This is pretty funny to me because I remember when UH played at USC and the refs clearly blew several calls early in the game that tilted the game to USC. I guess if you want the refs to favor you when you play USC then you have to be in the Pac-10…

USC coach Pete Carroll spoke to the Pacific-10 Conference this week about one his favorite subjects: Penalties. Specifically, the lack of flags thrown against the Trojans’ opponents.

Arizona committed one penalty while USC had 10 in Saturday’s 17-10 Trojan victory. This season, USC’s opponents have committed 43 penalties, the ninth-lowest mark in the Pac-10. This is a sore subject for Carroll because the previous four years (2004-07), USC opponents were called for the fewest penalties each season.

Carroll spoke he spoke to Pac-10 supervisor of officials Dave Cutaia, but wanted to stress sour grapes was not his motive.

“I just don’t understand how teams play so well against us for five years,” Carroll said.

I know that Mac and Ikaika Malloe, among others, have recruiting ties in the state of Texas. Maybe someday UH will be like the nearly 20% of the rest of D-IA and start a QB from Texas…

This season, 21 of the 119 starting quarterbacks in the NCAA Bowl Division have Texas ties. So do six of the top nine QBs ranked nationally in total offense.

Barring any major changes, expect the current group to be just the first wave of a process that started in the 1990s.

“You’ll see it continue,” said UNT coach Todd Dodge, who popularized the spread offense at Southlake Carroll. “It gets more and more every year.”

So good to hear that DD is recovering ahead of schedule. Sounds like he’ll be up and mowing the lawn before it can grow another inch. Make sure you get a good night’s rest, too.

BSU’s Ryan Clady seems to be doing better in the NFL than the #1 pick in the draft.

Only two rookie offensive tackles have started all their games for their teams this season.

Jake Long of the Dolphins is one. Ryan Clady of the Denver Broncos is the other. In Denver, the belief is Clady, drafted 12th overall, is better than Long, who was drafted first overall.

The statistics suggest that belief has some merit.

Clady has been penalized twice for 15 yards this season. He has not allowed a sack yet. Long has been penalized twice for 20 yards in seven games. He has also allowed 2.5 sacks for 15.5 yards worth of negative yardage.

Well, Long is a better run-blocker, right?

Actually the Broncos insist Clady is better on that front also. The Broncos offense leads the AFC in yards per rush and is fourth in the NFL in that statistical category. The Dolphins are 22nd in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt and are 11th in the AFC.

here’s a cute story. but, don’t tell duffer about this.
so we sit down at a table and duffer says, “you should order the japanese food because they make good japanese food. not too sure about the non-japanese food.”

so, like an obedient fellow, i order the japanese food. it was good and plentiful.

later, i go use the bathroom to 5-4-4. in doing so, i go by the kitchen. so the two line cooks are filipino and portuguese. so much for the authentic japanese food.

True story… In San Francisco I had dinner at Japanese restaurant fronting Chinatown. Had shrimp tempura, sashimi and tonkatsu dinner served by Japanese waitresses wearing kimonos.The dinner was very good so I went back to kitchen area to compliment the cooks. Found three of them were Hispanics. After complimenting them on how I realy liked the tempura and tonkatsu, one of them said hey I make a mean chimichanga too in my day job!

Hi Long Time. My most incredulous restaurant moment was when I was in Virginia and went to a new Chinese Restaurant. The cooks and family were Chinese but born and raised in New York city. The small Chinese grandmother shuffled to our table to take our order. She had a bronx accent. I stared in surprise–and then she asked me if I spoke english… 😳

i guess what they serve in a restaurant or grill does not necessarily mean that the owner is of the same nationality. have new sports bar called green leaf, serves korean food, but owned by japanese. have catering place for hawaiian food, but owned by filipinos. the get al’s favorite, paradise market, full on filipino food. with all this talk about fuud, getting hungry, but i got to go sleep, otherwise no look good in the am. hahahaaaaaa
