Alexander is named starter

In an announcement that was more of a formality, Greg Alexander today was named the starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Utah State. But head coach Greg McMackin said he also has crafted a role for Inoke Funaki, who has started six games this season. Both quarterbacks will play this weekend. Alexander started the season opener against Florida, but did not play significantly until the second half against Nevada, when he rallied the Warrriors to a 38-31 victory.

The Warriors face some interesting decisions this afternoon when they set the 64-player travel roster for the road trip to Utah State and New Mexico State.
It does not appear as if running back/slotback Kealoha Pilares and wedge-setter Victor Clore will be ready to play against Utah State Saturday. But they are on track to be healthy enough to play against New Mexico Sstate.
The Warriors must decide whether they can afford to bring one or both of those players to Utah State. The second option is to leave them home this weekend, then bring them up for the New Mexico State game. (The team will be staying in El Paso between the two road games)
But the second scenario means that, to accommodate the 64-player travel limit, two players would have to be sent home. That would disrupt the team-bonding experience that a 10-day road trip was supposed to achieve.
Setting the roster will not be as easy for this trip. Usually, the Warriors practice at UH Thursday morning, leave that afternoon and have a walk-through practice Friday. This time, they will have full practices in El Paso next week. But because of the travel-roster limitations, they will not have full scout teams to work against the offense and defense as they would if they were practicing at UH. A guy like scout quarterback Shane Austin is valuable to UH’s preparation. Can the Warriors afford to leave him or others like Austin behind?

such is the dilemna of being a Head Coach…hmmmm, let’s see, maybe that’s why he’s making the buku bucks? i think it’s a fair trade off.

if they leave the two ‘dinged up’ guys home, then fly them up…the players that they are replacing will be bummed, one for all and all for one right? i don’t know…

    tough decisions make tough people

    good luck

Is the 64 player travel roster a WAC rule?? It is a travel roster or game roster?? What if we send up more guys during the week and keep those up there but they don’t suit up for the game??

I like Bulla’s idea about traveling short for the Utah.St game, then send out Pilares and Clore after.

What is the time frame for getting them on the flight ? The day after? One minute after the final score on Sat. afternoon?

  15. Bulla October 29, 2008 7:27 am

    g’morning Mav,

if they travel short on the front end with only 62, no dire effect on the team, and then zoom the other guys up as soon as the first game is pau!

    ANTRAX Scare at Washington State

WSU football practice was delayed nearly two hours yesterday after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the practice field. Head coach, Paul Wulff, immediately suspended practice while police and federal agents were called to investigate. After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance, unknown to the players, was the goal line. Practice was resumed today after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again.

I was wondering about the travel roster that others have voiced as well.

  27. al October 29, 2008 8:07 am

sending them two short for usu would not solve the issue. rather send them two short they may as well send both with the team, that being the case, anyway. they could suit up and not play. the limit of 64 doesn’t mean they can have 62 able bodies you see.

my guess is that they will take kealoha from the get go.

    or,

just tell the last two to make the travel team that there could be a possibility of them having to come back home.

    or,
they could pay their own way for the last game.

    djmitcho – ROTFLMAO!! 😆

Re travel roster – I bet we’re the only program in the country with that problem, since everyone else either goes home between games or doesn’t have 2 road games scheduled back-to-back. What was Mr Benson and the WAC thinking when they scheduled this?! ❗ grrrrr.

DrDoc and WassupDoc – rest up today and for the next couple of weeks, OK? We want you both back healthy and ready to play come next t-gate!

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid October 29, 2008 8:27 am

    Good morning all!

I like Stretch’s idea the best. What constitutes a roster player? Don’t dress Austin and the other player for the second game. (Imagine how much fun it would be to be a player for UH and then have to sit amongst the enemy fans during a road game…)

  32. Garret October 29, 2008 8:35 am

Travel roster decisions are always difficult, especially when there are so many worthy candidates and the team stays on the mainland between games. The team could send them even if injured, which I’d prefer than sending 2 less players than the limit. Or, the coaches might anticipate that a player or two might get injured, and the injured player could be sent back to Hawaii for rehab.

If bonding is an important part of the long road trip, which is understandable and would be great for the team, then I’d hate to see players sent home. Maybe if the team brought Pilares (who can learn more about the offense watching on the sidelines and listening to the coaches instruction), then they could send Clore to El Paso if he was healthy and another player got hurt in the Utah State game.

The other consideration is that even though a players *says* he is healthy enough to play in a week, that doesn’t mean that he should rush back from injury if his body isn’t ready. I would trust the trainers to be a good judge of this, but sometimes it is hard to project rehab more than a week ahead. I would generally weigh on the side of caution, as a fully healthy player might be more valuable to send than a partially injured (and vulnerable to re-injury) player. Also, with no scout team next week, the backup players will have to serve as scout players. Injured players cannot practice fully, which decreases the bodies at practice.

  33. Rob25 October 29, 2008 8:36 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

I was going to try and make “Call The Coach” last night, but the jet lag kicked in on the way and I thought that I better head home. Hope a certain set of twins won some sort of head gear!

WD/DD: Rest, recover and return. That’s all you need to remember right now. You spend some quality time with each other and WD make sure that you are getting some rest also.

Kealoha is too valuable to leave off the roster! Send him up for the NaMaSu game and worry about who to send home after this week’s game. You never know how the injury bug or some other circumstance could change the situation.

    Esme and out!

  34. Garret October 29, 2008 8:38 am

    This is for Liz.

Students in James Brabant’s fifth- and sixth-grade split class at Patton Elementary School were star struck Oct. 14 when Detroit Lions linebacker Jordon Dizon visited.

But the pro athlete wasn’t just there to dish about football. Dizon, wearing his No. 57 jersey, also gave the students, many in Lions attire, a pep talk on the importance of staying in school.

“Education can take you far,” said Dizon, who grew up in Hawaii and eventually earned an economics degree from the University of Colorado. “Without education, you can’t think. You can’t write. You can’t make sense. You’re going to use every subject you use in school.”

Article about a local boy playing for Southern Utah.

Ursua, a native of Kailua-Kona Hawaii who grew up in a family of five boys and two girls, spent the last two years serving a mission in Utah for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

To play football, it was vital for him to latch onto a skilled position early in his career that began as a third grader.

“It wasn’t as fun as it is now,” Ursua said of his start in the sport. “Back home I wasn’t as big as the big Polynesians and Tongans. I fit in at the receiving position. That’s when I got running with it and I’ve been with it since.”

Ursua is the T-Birds’ third-leading receiver this season with 21 receptions for 212 yards and three TDs.

    KHNL feature on Alexander.

Now with two proven weapons behind center, McMackin says the team will continue their two quarterback approach with Alexander and Inoke Funaki.

“If you have something that causes people problems and doesn’t foul up your rhythm, then why not?”

Mcmackin also says Ryan Mouton will continue to play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

“He’s a key player on defense that’s where his future is, but he’s a play maker and I really feel that he brought the offense, especially the receivers to a higher level, and we’re going to continue playing him both ways.”

Gannett is going to cut another 10% of its workforce in its newspapers.

Gannett Co., the nation’s largest newspaper publisher, said Tuesday it will lay off another 10 percent of the work force in its local newspapers division as advertising revenue continues to plummet during the economic downturn.

The latest reductions, to come by early December, follow a 3 percent cut announced in August. Neither round affects USA Today.

Gannett isn’t revealing a specific number, but said all would be involuntary. Some 600 of the 1,000 cuts in the first round were achieved through layoffs.

As some have stated, maybe they should take the full roster this week based on who’s healthy this week and evaluate things post-game for next week…cannot predict what the injury situation will be then.

Eh!!! just stick with your rule of playing the physically able to play and not the walking wounded. After all, the physically able to play guys if I’m not mistaken have earned their chance to be considered to be added to the travel roster. That’s life, and the guys who can’t perform understand that rule.

  45. LizKauai [Believer] October 29, 2008 9:34 am

Garret- mahalo for the Jordon link! I was just reading a story about Jason Campbell’s visit to a school. How cool that Jordon went for the regular season winless Lions. I like what he had to say about that:

“Brabant didn’t hold back when asking Dizon how challenging it is to be on a team that’s not winning.

“It’s the toughest thing,” Dizon said. “I go to practice every week. I know when the team can be great. We were 4-0 in the preseason.”

  46. LizKauai [Believer] October 29, 2008 9:37 am

My thining may be way off, but there are going to be two players who normally would stay home that are going on this road trip. With the Aloha and respect that the players have for each other, those two players may be be disappointed, but I’m sure they would not hesitate to come home if the other two are sent up. These two guys, and all of the other unsung heroes who never get any glory and playing time are there because of their love of the game and unwavering loyalty to Warrior football. I don’t think this would affect team bonding. I’m sure all of the players know the situation and can handle the problem … for the good of the team.

  75. sjmacro October 29, 2008 10:55 am

Just back from practice which went a few more minutes past 9 AM. Things noticed since it’s been two weeks since our last peek at practice: tree branch obstructing our view trimmed and grass growing where we normally sit 🙂 but best of all…….There is definitely a positive underlying spirit and confidence; all rotations are hitting hard, even Steele on the scout team threw a tough block on #8 which drew attention from first unit on the other side of the field.
Funniest sight: Mouton on offense being knocked down then helped up by two of his defensive brothers as if to say it’s better on our side of the ball 😀
Will let ST report on who got reps and how the travel squad situation unfolds.
A great day to WDoc and Doc, Katie and Tsaiko Nation–sj & myki

  76. Garret October 29, 2008 10:56 am

Don’t forget that a solid backup QB is needed because QBs rarely make it through a season without having to miss significant time and even games due to injury. Especially for a team like UH whose QBs have been absorbing an alarming amount of hits, even if Mac wasn’t going to find a role for Inoke he probably would still get significant time.

It makes sense to keep Inoke involved, especially since his strengths are so different than Alexander’s. That forces the defensive coordinator to prepare for two very different styles of play. Plus, if Alexander gets an injury then Inoke is ready to play with game reps already.

  77. Committed Road Warrior October 29, 2008 10:57 am

    Liz
One of my fave burgers is Jake’s which is located in Ogden, Utah. Bulla, have you been there yet? I ate there back in ’94 and at the time it was the best I have ever eaten. Of course that was after a 5 day backpacking trip in the desert. Here in Spokane, D.Lish’s is the place to eat. Like In n Out, but better

Oklahoma State’s #1 booster sure lost a LOT of money this year…

I am not sure this country should follow the advice of a man that has lost over $2 billion so far this year. But then again, some of the nation’s most powerful men have lost far more than that in just the past few weeks.

And thanks to Pickens’ investing decisions, the fund has dropped in value by over 60% so far this year.

It is no wonder the investing firm’s phones are ringing off their hooks with folks looking to pull their money out of the fund. About half of BP Capital’s investors want out of their positions. Their capital withdraw has taken the fund’s size down to just $400 million.

It is a strong blow to the oil maverick’s ego.

Pickens promises to make the $2 billion back, but it is going to be much, much harder now that he has less funding to work with.

Instead of adding more money to his energy investments, Pickens is donating it to his beloved Oklahoma State and its football team. He just wrote a $65 million check earmarked to help finish the school’s football stadium.

Plus, Pickens said he would be returning the $125 million he managed in a hedge fund for the school. When he started the investment, it was worth $165 million.

The Rams sure understand how UH felt after the Fresno State game.

The New England Patriots committed 22 penalties in their first six games this season. The Pats’ total still is 22 — a league low — after they pitched a perfect game Sunday in turning aside the St. Louis Rams 23-16 in Foxborough, Mass.

That’s right: New England was assessed zero penalty yards. “Never ever, ever, ever played a perfect team before,” Rams guard Richie Incognito quipped. “That’s all I am going to say on that one.”

The one penalty that was called against the Pats — offensive holding in the fourth quarter — was declined by the Rams because quarterback Matt Cassel was sacked for an 8-yard loss on the play.

The Rams were flagged 12 times (three were declined) and set back 63 yards. “We did commit some penalties,” coach Jim Haslett conceded Monday after watching the game tape. “I thought there should have been some calls on the other side.”

Haslett noted three instances in which he felt New England should’ve been hit with a personal foul: a facemask on quarterback Marc Bulger, a late hit on Bulger and an out-of-bounds hit on cornerback Fakhir Brown after an interception.

    Liz,

Thank you for that link! The X-Ray results were good for Katie, since it means that the cancer did not spread from her pancreas to her lungs. The ultrasound will tell us if surgery will help or if they cannot take the tumor out.

  86. BowsForever October 29, 2008 11:28 am

Taking 62 along and letting two join later wouldn’t be a bad way around the situation. By the way, is it particularly difficult for reserve players to take the place of the scout team? Or maybe even swapping out Austin for, say, Rausch or Graunke as the scout QB if needed to free up more travel slots.

  87. LizKauai [Believer] October 29, 2008 11:38 am

BowsForever- re QB’s – not only Austin- Jake Santos is a gamer too.

  89. shyloh October 29, 2008 11:46 am

Too bad Coach Mac could not get the Warriors to stay in Dallas with June Jones instead of El Paso. Jones could have spent some of the $400,000 he owed us. We could use the “first class football facilities” that JJ said Hawaii was lacking. I wish JJ could face all our seniors he left for SMU.

  90. BowsForever October 29, 2008 12:02 pm

Sorry LizKauai – can’t forget Santos! But even though he’s a senior and all, does he usually go with the travel squad? There’s only so many QBs you can take along, and if Austin is one of the more prominent scout QBs, where does that leave him?

As for JJ, well, we seem to be doing OK without him. It was hardly good times when he left, but still. Would HF have resigned? Would Cooke Field ever have been turfed properly? Would we be necessarily better than 4-4 right now? Would Mack have been in line for head coach when JJ finally did leave the head coaching spot? Would we appreciate the football program in the same way we do now? Would recruiting still be restricted?

I don’t think the seniors are any worse off without JJ. As for the offense, Bess and RGM would’ve left anyway. And “those most likely to succeed in the NFL” still seem as solid as ever.

Don’t get me wrong — I totally agree with you about the $400,000 he owes. A contract’s a contract, and when you say that _HF_ let you out of it by spoken agreement…

  91. Pete_Jek October 29, 2008 12:08 pm

Where is the good grinds on Kauai? Need your help, going to be there today till Friday for the State High School bowling tournament. Know of places open till kind of late at night besides the fast food places?
I still think Mack should put both Inoki and Greg in at the same time. It would force the defense to put on db/lb on them and open up the field. Even if no play is directed in their direction, it forces the defense to defend against that possibility. Seen the throws Alexander made during the Nevada game, he had at least 2 throws where he was throwing off his back foot and still got the ball there, amazing. Guy has an arm.

  95. Zatoichi October 29, 2008 12:33 pm

d1 – When Alexander learns this offense I think he is going to be a terror. He does tend to hold the ball too long but when he does make up his mind to throw it on time, you can see a huge difference in how he sets up his receivers. I think it’s only time and experience is going to really be the difference. I agree, hope his throwing off his back foot isn’t something that continues, would like to see him step up and let one loose.

  99. BowsForever October 29, 2008 12:40 pm

Do we have the personnel for that annoying-as-hell flea-flicker play? Seems like Inoke’s optimum throwing range is around 40 yards…is that far enough?

  100. expat October 29, 2008 12:40 pm

Y’know, Farmer aligned as a slotback to create mismatches in the secondary starts to sound a bit like a tight end. Maybe not quite so tight. But you put a big blocker over there who can also catch and run, and isn’t that pretty much a tight end with alignment anxiety?

I hope that Ron Lee shakes things up. I like what they are doing with Mouton. Get your athletes involved in ways that that they can contribute. Get Farmer out there where he can use his hands. Put Inoke and Alexander in at the same time and run some serious misdirection. Put in some plays that get LWJ involved in ways where he can use his skills – as opposed to giving him shovel passes once he is already half tackled. We really haven’t seen anything too surprising thus far as far as the kind of plays called. Last year you could line up in the same set almost every down and just say, “this is what we do and we are going to out-execute you.” So far we haven’t had the route runners or the passers to do that. (Neither does JJ this year)

One thing we haven’t seen this year is many long plays. Pilares has the longest run at 34 yards. Lane has the longest reception at 53 yards. Nevada had two runs of greater than 60 yards against us. Fresno had an 80 yarder. SJSU had a 77 yard completion. Our D has been pretty solid but has been prone to giving up a few big plays. Our Offense so far has not really threatened to break big plays. As a result we haven’t been able to keep the opposing D honest.

  101. 808flowmaster October 29, 2008 12:41 pm

Finally Alexander will get another start…this is the best way for UH to go the rest of the season. I had posted this last week too, but to no avail…until the second half. Alexander starts and Inoke come in on some 2nd/3rd and short situations or goaline situations — use him like Florida did Tebow in his freshman year. Inoke doesn’t have a college-level arm to throw the deep out or downfield, but he has the legs to pick up a few yards and the arm to throw a quick slant to the slot when the D expects him to run and blitzes the line. I love Alexanders height, durability, arm strength and surprising mobility. He totally layed the lumber on a Nevada LB last week. Let’s go Warriors!

  102. Loa October 29, 2008 12:47 pm

Zatoichi – i noticed the back foot thing too, looks like instincts took over and he just launched it to make a play

  103. Loa October 29, 2008 12:50 pm

expat – yep, speaking of mismatches, remember when the other linebackers used to try and cover Chad Owens, forget about it, hehe

  104. BowsForever October 29, 2008 12:50 pm

Inoke has the tools to do well, he just needs to work on his consistency. Let’s not forget that it was Inoke, not Colt, who was the first QB to lead us to victory against a ranked team on the road. Inoke can run whole series just fine when he’s consistent, and he throws some beautiful spirals when he’s on the money. If he can reduce the receiver lock-on and make quicker decisions on when to start taking off, that’ll be a bunch of improvement right there. I would have no problem with Inoke and Alexander sharing time all of next season. If you have two capable QBs, why not allow yourself to switch between whoever has the hot hand?

  105. Da Punchbowl Kid October 29, 2008 12:50 pm

Great news for Alexander. I think we’re looking at a young version of Rolovich. Look for the “light” to burn even brighter as he gets more comfortable with this offense; when it does, it’ll be “lights out” for UH opponents.

Inoke Funaki and GA at the same time makes a lot of sense. Talk about keeping opponents guessing…

Farmer at slot sounds like the RNS version of a tight end.

    Any updates on Dr. Doc?

  110. Kaimuki Kid October 29, 2008 1:02 pm

The offense should be alined in a modified pistol / I formation working off the shotgun and hand off the ball to LWJ and let hm pick his holes, give him a chance to run in an open space. They can still be in a 4-wide set. the offense ran a similar play last year and LWJ went to the house, but I never saw that play again. I think it was in the Nevada game last year, I kinda laughed when they lined up in the pistol, seemed like they were mocking Nevada but, boy did it work. LWJ hit the hole and in a flash he was in the end zone, 49 yards if memory serves

  111. J-Dog October 29, 2008 1:02 pm

Im excited for Alexander and Rausch. After a crash course of having to learn the offense during this past summer, they will have the rest of this season, spring ball, and another summer to learn. They will be solid in ’09. Not to mention the JC receivers we haven’t used yet.

hi xs- yeah, we have the vog today 🙁

  114. J-Dog October 29, 2008 1:05 pm

I agree that LWJ needs plays where he can hit the hole, and not be moving toward the sidelines. What happened to the bubble screens? Seems they are more adamant about running shovel passes this year.

  115. homey ⌀ October 29, 2008 1:05 pm

Surprising to see that Utah St and the Warriors are close in offensive yards average per game. Defensively, the Warriors have an advantage. What the heck, it’s time to see a blowout.

  116. Zatoichi October 29, 2008 1:06 pm

Agree with everyone out there. There are personnel moves that will create major mismatches in the secondary. I think now that Alexander is starting the will open a whole of things up, especially if they align Farmer and Mouton as slots, even align LWJ as a slot. That opens the possibility of where a LB has to cover them, don’t think they can on a consistent basis. I really think the key in getting the offense going will be finding a way to keep defenses from speed rushing on the outside, either throwing the rock right where they are rushing from (short screens) and using that speed rush to their advantage. Agreed DPK, once Alexander feels comfortable in this offense it will be lights out.

  117. ryan October 29, 2008 1:07 pm

Sounds like our other Long Beach Poly commit Daily-Lyles is also looking at other schools like Iuta Tepa. Bad week for recruiting news.

  118. 808flowmaster October 29, 2008 1:07 pm

I’m not sure I agree with the rotation of GA/IF during the game on a series by series basis. The thing with this offense is that it’s partly a rhythm offense. When you rotate two QBs every other series, it’s typically that neither will find a good rhythm. Whereas, if you bring Inoke in only on select downs here and there, it still keeps the D guessing and gives Alexander a good short breather — plus the offense can stay in rhythm. We’ll see how Mack and RLee decide to play it. I’m pretty sure the Utah State D-coord is having fits right now.

  121. BowsForever October 29, 2008 1:15 pm

808flowmaster – I’m not a fan of the platoon system in terms of constant rotation, but I can see the merit in freely switching between two (or more?) equally talented QBs until one of them starts getting it done, while keeping the flexibility to swap out the QB if he starts severely underperforming. This could be a rare time a two-QB system would work since Inoke has a very different style from Alexander, Graunke and Rausch. You bring Inoke in, the defensive coordinator is forced to change things up.

  134. d1島 October 29, 2008 1:50 pm

stretchinternet is the same folks who stream the Linfield games. They had a little connectivity problem a few weeks back but generally, it’s been pretty reliable.
The issue I have is with regard to the feed they get from Linfield. The school only has one camera on top of the grandstand and one field-level hand-held so the angles are very limited. In fact, the operator of the top camera seems to only frame the shot to include the Home side of the line of scrimmage so you never have any idea of how the opponent is set before the snap!
Hopefully USU has a little better situation for their feed to stretchinternet; like maybe the K5 feed (never thought I’d ever admit that their feed was a better choice!)

  135. Rob25 October 29, 2008 1:52 pm

    Kaimuki Kid:

LWJ shouldn’t swing out because he hesitates when he has time to think. He just needs to hit the hole quickly and then turn on the burners. It’s up to the O line to open up that hole right away so he can sneak in and race down the field.

My random thoughts agree with yours.

  136. d1島 October 29, 2008 1:57 pm

Good RB’s will hit a hole with explosiveness; great ones have patience to allow holes to develop. Indecisive ones get buried for TFL’s.

That is why a formaton like the Pistol is ideal for LWJ, he gets a better look at the developing holes and running lanes, play action can more effective, read option is there and the 4-wide can still be utilized. This type of formation as a change up, something Inoke Funaki could run. You could even slot up David Farmer as a blocking back to pancake an unsuspecting LB…Think about the possiblities…sigh

I like that UH is starting Alexander; not just that he deserves it, but because Inoke Funaki is flat-out terrific coming off the bench. I’m not just talking about his performance a few games back, but rather his performances over the last 2 years. For whatever the reason he seems to be more energized & plays a much more inspired brand of football as a back-up. This year as a starter (except for one game) he’s been lackluster. Last year he looked razor sharp & looked to be pushing Tyler for playing time.

Duffer I am not to sure but the formation that I was having random thoughts about is for when the offense wanted to change up and do a running play. I had LWJ in mind, you could do play action fake and throw the ball or hand the ball off and let LWJ do his thing or read option some thing similar to what Nevada does, or line up David Farmer in the slot on the side you want the running play to go, or fake the hand off and let LWJ slide out to the flat and flip him a short one. Something, any thing to get him a little running room so he can operate…Again just dreaming of the possiblities….

  162. Loa October 29, 2008 3:41 pm

duffer – i would think its easier from a 3 pt. stance since you start off lower but starting from a pass block stance didn’t seem to affect our running abilities in previous seasons, so idk, maybe jason, wmojo and pride. can chime in

  163. mp October 29, 2008 3:53 pm

Only got to see the last quarter of the game but from what little I saw, couple more games as starting QB and I think GA will be a solid RnS QB for UH. Still pulling for Inoke though. O.K. On to Utah St.

  180. whitey October 29, 2008 5:08 pm

fb can be a game of deception and should be used to your advantage. if this is true, why not have the o line get into a 3 pt stance, so the defense would not know whether it is a pass or run. i am not sure, but i think another huge plus would be leverage and strength and experts are always saying that low has more advantages. another problem with the pass block stance is the number of penalties in key situations for the warriors.

  185. Nalani October 29, 2008 5:50 pm

Whitey my brotha from a Maui motha….your logic is sound, but usually the OL uses the 2 pt for pass pro when the OL are not quick enough to get up out of their stance and are getting beat by quicker DL, usually DEs. Because Kahai is an inside player, I’ve never seen him go to a 2 pt stance. As a Center, they’re at an even bigger disadvantage because one hand is under them when they snap, but that’s why they get the big bucks (ha! not)

I think the pistol formation was used last year during the Fresno St. game. LWJ scored a long td and was successful in that formation. Since they’re making adjustments for different personnel, maybe they can line up in the pistol when LWJ comes in.

    Go Warriors!

  213. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 29, 2008 8:14 pm

    Good Evening Everyone:

Finally was able to take some time to read yesterday and today’s blog. Again, mahalo for the kind thoughts & prayers – especially since they worked. SjMacro and Myki – I am going to print out your posts from yesterday and give them to DrDoc tomorrow.

DD stayed in a medically-induced coma from around 2 am Tuesday until 2 pm this afternoon. I arrived about half an hour after he woke up – lucid and able to talk baseball, volleyball, football, and basketball. I couldn’t stay very long because I had to take care of bidness back in town.

Spoke to him a couple of times since then. Around 5 pm, he was able to walk from the bed to the chair (with help) where he sat up for about an hour – the first time since he went into the emergency room Sunday afternoon – and had his first solid food since Sunday at lunch.

He’s doing exceedingly well given the trauma his body went through and is sitting way out on the right hand side of the bell curve.

Barring any problems, tomorrow he’ll be moved out of cardiovascular ICU and onto the general medical/surgical floor. At that point, he’ll be able to receive phone calls directly and have non-family visitors. I’m going to go see him after the Stadium Authority meeting which should be pau by 12:30 or so.

As for me – I’m dealing with a lot of stuff that has to be taken care of both personally & professionally. Still haven’t caught up on my sleep, but at least I am doing so in a bed rather than passing out in the back seat of the car.

In addition to all the medical, family & financial stuff, I have a ton of work to complete plus a couple of very important meetings which cannot be delayed beyond the end of next week.

It didn’t help that I had a near disaster this afternoon when I realized that my left front tire was borderline flat. Fortunately, I was about six blocks away from Lex Brodie’s who took care of it and didn’t charge me a penny.

Nevertheless, I am going to need recreational therapy at the Therapy Sports Bar on Saturday along with the Wahine volleyball games Friday & Saturday nights. Saturday morning, DD will be in rehab until about 11:30 am so I’ll head on out to see him after the UH win.

If nothing else, this has been a huge wakeup call for DD in particular about getting our affairs in order – just in case. DD promises me that he will use his recuperation time at home to get stuff organized.

BACK TO SPORTS: Congrats to the Phillies/National League for winning the World Series. Still, the Rays were phenoms.

Re UH’s offtensive gameplan. I like the duo quarterback system as long as the two collaborate rather than compete.

How are the injuries – has anyone gone on medical leave for the rest of the season?

One last note: The news about Saturn the Dog is not good. We won’t be able to even sit down with the veterinarian to talk about options until after DD gets out of the hospital. Hope Saturn The Dog’s health can wait a week or so.

Again, mahalo for the good thoughts. Have to run to the store and get some cat and dog food or there will be open rebellion amongst the peasants tomorrow morning.

  214. jm2375 October 29, 2008 8:22 pm

WDoc – great news! Please, please, take care of yourself. Remember, the caregiver can’t give care if they need care themselves. Sorry to hear about Saturn. Again, please give me a call if you need anything.

If anyone hasn’t seen the video, I’d recommend clicking on this link and watching what happens when a band puts their metal carts right next to the end zone…wow.

This one is hard to watch, so take that into consideration before you click on the video below.

Houston receiver Patrick Edwards suffered a compound fracture of his right leg Tuesday running into what reportedly were band carts left behind the end zone. A redshirt walkon freshman from Hearne who had always dreamed of playing at Houston, Edwards had 46 receptions this season.

As for Marshall and every other team in the country that has stuff near the field, move it. Now.

Regarding the school band, I hope you have good legal counsel.

  223. Garret October 29, 2008 9:09 pm

Pete Carroll is sure unhappy with the Pac-10 refs…and I’m surprised that a team like USC seems to be *not* favored by the refs. It sure sounds like Carroll is asking for “clarification” like Mac…and Carroll has 5 years of history to point to.

This is pretty funny to me because I remember when UH played at USC and the refs clearly blew several calls early in the game that tilted the game to USC. I guess if you want the refs to favor you when you play USC then you have to be in the Pac-10…

USC coach Pete Carroll spoke to the Pacific-10 Conference this week about one his favorite subjects: Penalties. Specifically, the lack of flags thrown against the Trojans’ opponents.

Arizona committed one penalty while USC had 10 in Saturday’s 17-10 Trojan victory. This season, USC’s opponents have committed 43 penalties, the ninth-lowest mark in the Pac-10. This is a sore subject for Carroll because the previous four years (2004-07), USC opponents were called for the fewest penalties each season.

Carroll spoke he spoke to Pac-10 supervisor of officials Dave Cutaia, but wanted to stress sour grapes was not his motive.

“I just don’t understand how teams play so well against us for five years,” Carroll said.

  224. Garret October 29, 2008 9:12 pm

That walk-on Texas Tech kicker might get a bigger role now. It would be amazing if a student who won a kicking contest during halftime of a game ends up kicking a crucial FG against #1 Texas on Saturday!

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was noncommittal when asked this week if Matt Williams, the regular student from Weatherford turned extra-point kicker, would also be considered for field goals.

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was noncommittal when asked this week if Matt Williams, the regular student from Weatherford turned extra-point kicker, would also be considered for field goals.

  225. Garret October 29, 2008 9:14 pm

I know that Mac and Ikaika Malloe, among others, have recruiting ties in the state of Texas. Maybe someday UH will be like the nearly 20% of the rest of D-IA and start a QB from Texas…

This season, 21 of the 119 starting quarterbacks in the NCAA Bowl Division have Texas ties. So do six of the top nine QBs ranked nationally in total offense.

Barring any major changes, expect the current group to be just the first wave of a process that started in the 1990s.

“You’ll see it continue,” said UNT coach Todd Dodge, who popularized the spread offense at Southlake Carroll. “It gets more and more every year.”

  226. Garret October 29, 2008 9:16 pm

Why is the state of Texas producing so many QBs? And is there something that can be done in Hawaii to help the development of local QBs?

Coaches and players say Texas has become the perfect incubator for young quarterbacks for a variety of reasons, beginning with population and a football-crazy tradition.

Throw early, throw often. The UIL’s decision to sanction 7-on-7 play during the summer in 1998 changed the dynamic for quarterbacks.

“In the past, they’d just lift weights or run,” said Ennis coach Sam Harrell, Graham’s father.

Now quarterbacks spend the summer competing in passing leagues, building an innate familiarity with the offense and their receivers.

How prevalent is the spread? Sam Harrell jokes that Graham never took a snap under center in six seasons, from middle school to his senior season.

The big-time nature of Texas high school football. Quarterbacks get used to big crowds and high-pressure situations, sometimes before they even have a driver’s license.

Stafford has talked about how his Highland Park experience helped him be ready to start as a freshman in the Southeastern Conference.

BSU’s Ryan Clady seems to be doing better in the NFL than the #1 pick in the draft.

Only two rookie offensive tackles have started all their games for their teams this season.

Jake Long of the Dolphins is one. Ryan Clady of the Denver Broncos is the other. In Denver, the belief is Clady, drafted 12th overall, is better than Long, who was drafted first overall.

The statistics suggest that belief has some merit.

Clady has been penalized twice for 15 yards this season. He has not allowed a sack yet. Long has been penalized twice for 20 yards in seven games. He has also allowed 2.5 sacks for 15.5 yards worth of negative yardage.

Well, Long is a better run-blocker, right?

Actually the Broncos insist Clady is better on that front also. The Broncos offense leads the AFC in yards per rush and is fourth in the NFL in that statistical category. The Dolphins are 22nd in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt and are 11th in the AFC.

wassup doc, spend as much time with him as possible. although he may be well on the way to recovery nothing more scary than a close call with death. he may seem okay, but, he needs a comforting hand more than anything else.

  245. al October 29, 2008 10:16 pm

nice lunch today with whitey and duffer at ichiban restaurant.

here’s a cute story. but, don’t tell duffer about this.
so we sit down at a table and duffer says, “you should order the japanese food because they make good japanese food. not too sure about the non-japanese food.”

so, like an obedient fellow, i order the japanese food. it was good and plentiful.

later, i go use the bathroom to 5-4-4. in doing so, i go by the kitchen. so the two line cooks are filipino and portuguese. so much for the authentic japanese food.

    Al, Whitey,

True story… In San Francisco I had dinner at Japanese restaurant fronting Chinatown. Had shrimp tempura, sashimi and tonkatsu dinner served by Japanese waitresses wearing kimonos. The dinner was very good so I went back to kitchen area to compliment the cooks. Found three of them were Hispanics. After complimenting them on how I realy liked the tempura and tonkatsu, one of them said hey I make a mean chimichanga too in my day job!

  254. SteveM October 29, 2008 11:22 pm

  257. SteveM October 29, 2008 11:33 pm

Hi Long Time. My most incredulous restaurant moment was when I was in Virginia and went to a new Chinese Restaurant. The cooks and family were Chinese but born and raised in New York city. The small Chinese grandmother shuffled to our table to take our order. She had a bronx accent. I stared in surprise–and then she asked me if I spoke english… 😳

  258. jm2375 October 29, 2008 11:53 pm

OK, time for reminiscing. Both stories are from when I was in college in DC. First one, Japanese “bento” counter in an upscale mall (like Ward Center). Order bento and then ask for hashi. Clerk looks at me and then tells me they only get one pair – the one they use to cook with! Second one, two friends and I went to Chinatown to eat. Typical Chinee restaurant. You know da kine, where they throw da menu at you and say “Whatchu like?” So get 1 buddahead, 1 filipino and 1 hapa at the table. Order our entrees and then ask for rice. Waitress says “how many bowls?” 😯

    TIme to go nene. Oyasumina-tsai.

Hope you have good lunch tomorrow SteveM.

  262. whitey October 30, 2008 12:05 am

i was going sleep, but went to check the backyard and lo and behold my friends (deer) are back after the fire. no worry about chinese restaurant in alaska, especially anchorage. all the japanese and chinese restaurants i went to are owned by koreans in anchorage. one in kodiak is owned by filipinos. the other one is my pake friend.

  263. whitey October 30, 2008 12:13 am

i guess what they serve in a restaurant or grill does not necessarily mean that the owner is of the same nationality. have new sports bar called green leaf, serves korean food, but owned by japanese. have catering place for hawaiian food, but owned by filipinos. the get al’s favorite, paradise market, full on filipino food. with all this talk about fuud, getting hungry, but i got to go sleep, otherwise no look good in the am. hahahaaaaaa

  264. SteveM October 30, 2008 12:18 am

Thanks Long Time UH Fan, that reminded me of my days as a regular vendor at the swap meet 🙂 Boy, the stories we could share…(the mail was a movie about India vs. Chinese bargaining)

jm2375 — 6 Hawaii reserve buddies and I went to Concord, CA for a 2-week school in the 80’s. We went to a large Japanese restaurant in town. First, we confused the waitress with 9 entrees for 7 people. Then we ran them out of rice–they said they never saw people eat 3+ bowls of rice each…and these weren’t Tsai-kos 🙂 They asked us to call ahead next time–the food was good so we went back 2 more times.
