Countdown

By tomorrow, the Warriors will be finalizing what will  be a 102-player roster for training camp. The players report on Wednesday, and the first practice is Thursday afternoon.

They are awaiting word on JC cornerbacks Justin Turner and Ronald Fields and offensive lineman Mike Milovale. Those three are completing work on associate degrees — eligibility requirements for this coming season.

This past weekend, Turner went to Seattle to take a test. He is expected back in town today or tomorrow.

Running back Sterling Jackson, who was held out of spring practice following shoulder surgery, has been cleared to participate in training camp.

Running back Samson Anguay, who underwent knee surgery last year, still is awaiting full medical clearance. He will not participate in at least the first part of training camp.

Spiking the ball before reaching the endzone…

Kinda reminds me of a certain player from a certain team from Nevada, getting the ball knocked out of his hand and turning it over to us. Same but different… in a happy way!

  20. Wes'side Warrior July 30, 2012 9:11 am

Funny how Coach Shoji briefly mentions the rail in his daily journal at the London Games. If I hadn’t left home, and/or never experienced how efficiently a good rail system moves people, I might have different thoughts about it. But of all the places I’d been, the system used in Japan is just plain awesome! When we were first stationed there, I couldn’t wait to get a car a drive everywhere. After suffering through headache after headache of city traffic, we left the car home once and walked the 20 minutes to the nearest station. After that, the only time we really drove was on base. The inter-city lines were great. The city-to-city lines were outstanding!

  21. Wes'side Warrior July 30, 2012 9:14 am

    And speaking of rail…

Has W-Doc posted anything recently on Aloha Stadium? And what of the politicians…? Do we spend the money to fix it up, or do we go with Plan B out in Kapolei, or wherever?

  22. NYUHTX July 30, 2012 9:24 am

Awesome Alosi. He was 6 foot 6 coming out of high school.

  23. NYUHTX July 30, 2012 9:26 am

Alosi should note they have good flights coming out of Newark, NJ to Hawai’i so he can get back and forth from home quickly and his family can come out to see him play. Almost as easy as driving to State College.

  24. Ipu Man July 30, 2012 9:27 am

Whenever I visit Japan, I stay with a family who live about a block away from

the steel on steel line…and boy you wake up sharp at 5am every day as it starts

  25. Ipu Man July 30, 2012 9:29 am

Nice video on Alosi. No suck up music to enhance his power…

Looks good on both sides of the ball…

  26. papajoe2 July 30, 2012 9:36 am

WW, i finally made up my mind about rail. I don’t like the price tag, but my friends who are opposed to rail, have never ridden on one. I’ve been to Washington D.C., New York, San Diego, Vegas. All have rail and its the easiest form of transportation. The worry is how to get to and from the rail station. As I understand it, you catch a bus or drive to a bus stop and transfer from the bus to the rail with the same ticket. Then catch another bus with the same ticket to your destination. My reason for making up my mine for being pro-rail? My brother just came back from Australia, and said the rail there was the way to go. Each stop was only 12-15 seconds (they timed it because his daughter, who was with them, didn’t delieve it). He said he covered a lot of ground through the rail. Can buy a daily pass, monthly pass, or just pay for each ride. Maybe that’s why people living in New York City, rarely owns cars with all the other expenses associated with the vehicle.

  27. papajoe2 July 30, 2012 9:37 am

    Happy birthday bruddah Mike.

Instead of rail, just extend the Ala Wai around the island.

Bangkok used to a city of canals and easy travel before

they invented cement and choke fully loaded busses of human sardines…

  30. Ipu Man July 30, 2012 9:44 am

Nuff…sorry about rail…will try to refrain.

  31. Stephen Tsai July 30, 2012 9:48 am

I wonder about those lots where you’d park before boarding the rail. I can’t imagine the stall being inexpensive.

  32. Ipu Man July 30, 2012 9:55 am

How do you “drop off and pick up the kids” (at various different widely separated places)

via rail before and after work?

#23 — What about the cost of the plane fare? Now that would really be an “inconvenience”, if not prohibitive. Driving to State College would cost a heck of a lot less!

  40. papajoe2 July 30, 2012 10:08 am

I was watching handball briefly. Almost like basketball with an indoor soccer goal and goalie. I don’t understand the rules, like if there is traveling or offsides, but it looks interesting. How do you block a shot or get the ball back? I gotta investigate.

team handball uses the basketball, soccer and football rules in advancing the ball. fouls are determined this way also. I think frisbee rules are tied in some how.

Introduced this to pe classes at Damien in mid 70’s mostly to jr and senior classes as a culminating activity at end of year after they mastered the basics of the other disciplines. read about this from an article on Joe Story from Kalani whom excelled in this olympic sport

I don’t think there is offside, no tacking is used, blocking or guarding is similar to basket ball. there is a 25 foot arc in front of goal which in order to score no one is not to enter. you can leap or fly over the line to get the ball in the net but not step into this area.

  47. koakane July 30, 2012 10:36 am

    http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/alosi_anthony00.html

he’s listed at 6’4″ inspite of his hs recruiting listings had him at 6’6″.

  52. papajoe2 July 30, 2012 10:49 am

kk, I was wondering if a guy like Randy Johnson, who is 6’8-10″ tall, and a super fast pitch, was to play handball. What would it take to stop him. A goalie would be a fool to stand in front of one of his fastballs. DUCK! if you can.

  55. Wes'side Warrior July 30, 2012 11:02 am

Hahaha, Ipu Man! I’ve been on those and gotten pushed before too! And then the GI’s with me said it’s the job of those “pushers” to get as many in as possible, as long as the doors close. I thought, “Wow! What a job!”

As far as getting groceries, we’d always see locals doing their shopping and bringing bags onto the trains. So many stores are set up along the line, at nearly every stop, so it’s fairly easy to get off, get some stuff, and get back on.

For us, we shopped the “American” way… maybe once a week or once every two weeks for major stuff, and overload the car. Plus, we had the PX and Commissary, so we’d stay on base for those trips. It would be a lifestyle change in more ways than one, for those near the stations.

They also had these underground shopping centers at major stations. Kinda like how airports are set up, with shops on the “inside”. Pretty impressive how it was all set up.

PPJ2 brings up the main point… cost. The convenience and efficiency are huge pluses, once people get used to it. And security will have to be paramount to draw doubters onto the trains. But at what cost? And where will the money come from?

  56. Wes'side Warrior July 30, 2012 11:04 am

  75. Old School Dave July 30, 2012 11:56 am

Good to hear that the Warriors will be housed in the dorms the first week of training camp, then at Pearl Harbor after that. Building camaraderie is one thing, but not being able to get enough sleep and rest due to sleeping on cots and poor living conditions (in the dance studios) is detrimental to the players. Read that a number of players caught colds and got sick in past training camps.

Talked to his Uncle at the Punahou-Kamehameha State girls match at the Blaisdell last winter and he mentioned John was motivated to work towards acceptance into UH this fall to time it with his sister entering her first year with the Wahine.

#32 – most of the newer rails are almost as quiet as air….but about the day care, smart people will find places to build day care centers near the stops. My friend did that in the DC area, he had one center in the burbs, then he got financing and he put 3 of them within 2 blocks of the metro stations and the guy retired last year, 48 years old, a millionaire. He also offered free parking to parents who dropped off the kids, walked to the rail and took it to work. If I had money I’d do it.

Park-and-Ride lots will be crucial at a lot of the larger rail stations.

If the city plans correctly they will provide free parking to encourage folks to use rail.

  122. wafan July 30, 2012 5:11 pm

The complaints about rail noise . . . apparently they have not ridden on the new systems or they just are against rail.

  123. wafan July 30, 2012 5:12 pm

Looking forward to the new Warriors and major team bonding.

    Go Warriors!

  124. Derek July 30, 2012 5:22 pm

Mililani High School recently dedicated their new field turf. Now we can have great OC16 OIA football on a nice green field rather than a muddy field all the time. They also re-did the track which was one of the best in the state. Too bad they didn’t re-work the seating, but maybe that’s for another time.

P.S. Will Darnell Arceneaux be helping out at training camp? Just got my complimentary issue for Power Sweep in the mail today. Time is flying so fast. With about 2 weeks of Olympics, baseball still going, NFL camps and exhibition games, plus WGC Bridgestone golf and PGA championship in 3 weeks to keep us occupied, Sept. 1 is really around the corner.

  125. tommui July 30, 2012 5:38 pm

#119 PIAA DS My experience using subways, I find that steel on steel like the NY subways are really noisy; the same for Chicago’s system. OTH the rubber wheel ones such as found in some European countries – are really quiet.

Often wondered if the Seattle’s monorail would be better for Honolulu

  126. Kevin July 30, 2012 5:42 pm

    Tom,

Thank you again for the help in getting the “wheels” moving. Hopefully the next few days/weeks are fruitful.

  127. RedZone July 30, 2012 5:52 pm

I remember riding the monorail from Tokyo to the airport many years ago and I can’t remember it being noisy. The trains had that clack clack noise. The bullet train was the best. That thing could fly and the noise was’nt as loud. It was kinda like riding on an airplane.

  128. tommui July 30, 2012 6:03 pm

#128 Kevin – no problem – just make sure I get a couple of season tickets!

  129. Jin July 30, 2012 6:15 pm

Yes, the rail system in Japan is fantastic and there are toilets at every station even small stations in the country. Here in Hawaii NO TOILETS AT THE STATIONS!!! Hawaii cannot even keep the toilets open at the main bus terminal and in Wahiawa because no money for security.

  130. Jin July 30, 2012 6:17 pm

I meant to say NO TOILETS PLANNED FOR THE STATIONS.

John Manu-Olevao played for Fresno City College back in 2008 and 2009 seasons (#72 on rosters).

    http://www.fresnocitycollege.edu/index.aspx?page=2583

    http://www.fresnocitycollege.edu/index.aspx?page=2540

SO….unless he was on a church mission and/or on military duty…..he would only have 1 to play 1 at most…..IF his eligibility clock started in 2008.

Looks like Pilares is impressing in camp…

    http://www.catscratchreader.com/2012/7/30/3201474/carolina-panthers-training-camp-day-two-summary

The standout receiver in yesterday’s practice was Kealoha Pilares, who had a fantastic weekend overall. Pilares was fighting for the ball in the air, adjusting well to less than desirable passes, and on one key reception he adjusted to an under-thrown pass by Derek Anderson to slide in front of Charles Godfrey and nab the ball close to the ground. It wasn’t a flashy play, but one you see every single Sunday, and those are the plays he needs to make.

  204. al July 31, 2012 8:12 am

Similar to a report on Salas yesterday…

    http://www.clanram.com/forums/f11/ramview-training-camp-report-7-29-long-48953/

“A possible candidate for star of the first practice would be Greg Salas, who I saw make more catches than anybody else, including some tough catches over the middle.”

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/please-welcome-texas-m-bulldogs-sec-191944334–ncaaf.html

Comical, to say the least. Thought most folks involved with these projects (especially finalization with the end product) were college grads, at least. This is a simple mistake to catch… or so I thought.

  213. shrine2da808 July 31, 2012 8:44 am

Pehea ‘oe….I was wondering, once Colt Brennan gets out of prison and out of rehab, can he try out for the Lingerie Football League? Seriously, I know it’s “technically” only for females, but if he can fit into some lingerie, and still has woman-like arm strength like he did at UH, he MAY, just may tear that league up. It’s the only league he hasn’t washed out of (I don’t count the AFL as a league despite Moniz playing in it). Thoughts? Mahalo….shrine.

  217. Wes'side Warrior July 31, 2012 8:52 am

Please welcome the Texas A&M ‘Bulldogs’ to the SEC

Sorry, but that is just ridiculously funny… coming from the SEC, Adidas, and the SECStore.com.

  218. WarriorNY July 31, 2012 8:54 am

Another couple tidbits on Pilares… Steve Smith says Pilares will be a huge fantasy sleeper…

Kealoha Pilares is poised to surprise Panthers fans. Today he was all over the offense. There were times he lined up in the slot, times he was a running back, times he ran the end around, and even on occasion where he was the Wildcat QB and handed the ball off to Cam Newton. It looks like he’ll be a Swiss army knife, like Mike Tolbert, and used in a variety of situations.

  219. Da Punchbowl Kid July 31, 2012 8:56 am

All of our local Dodger fans might be happy, but a certain Phillie fan is very very unhappy this morning.

  220. shrine2da808 July 31, 2012 8:58 am

I am a girl, so I wouldn’t hate it. I just want him to succeed in some league and I know they play during the Superbowl so maybe some NFL scouts would be watching.

  221. Da Punchbowl Kid July 31, 2012 9:03 am

Sigh. I’m only looking for a league he could possible succeed in that isn’t too tough for him. There are NFL scouts there, right? If he has to wear lingerie, so be it. As long as wears his helmet and cup and is safe. He needs exposure and that pass happy league will tailor to his arm strength. Of course all this after he gets better from his latest mistake. Mahalo.
