Corner route

Justin Turner, a former 5-star cornerback who was on Michigan’s 2009 team, is on track to earning an associate degree in July and joining the Warriors for the start of training camp on Aug. 1.

Turner had a 2.8 GPA this past trimester. He will take three classes during an eight-week session that begins in June.

Turner, who works out daily with a personal trainer, is technically a free agent. And even though he has received interest since he began clearing academic hurdles, there is no doubt about his intentions.


“I’m going to be a Warrior,” Turner said. “I’m a man of my word.”

    Michigan having their football players train with the Navy Seals can only help their players on and off the field in the future.

    Hoke became particularly fond of the U.S. Navy SEALs during his two-year stint at San Diego State, which is located near a naval base. He since has tried to instill the specialized force’s maxims for discipline and leadership in his teams.

    He took that to a new level last week, when he sent 22 of his seniors to Southern California for a four-day summit with the SEALs. They also worked with kids at a clinic in Pasadena.

    “This is part of the growth and development of my players as young men,” Hoke told the Pasadena Sun. “When they go through the game of football, there are life lessons that are taught — them being accountable and having great commitment to each other.”

    “The one thing we noticed about these great athletes and men that we were around, is that after they left football, they just didn’t know how to be leaders,” Wellman told the Sun. “They didn’t understand what a leader is and what is expected of a leader and that’s something we wanted to change.”

    Great news for the warrior program, I guess. 5 stars is good enough to get a, “Take a free ride on the Reading Rail, and collect $200 when you pass GO”,lol.

    Jmho, Maybe not so great news for, CB’s Bubba Poueu-Luna and Mike Sellers who both are entering fall camp as starters and may get bumped down the dept chart due to JHT moving over too FS if that’s the case. One of these back ups are going to get bumped down the dept chart to 3rd string, Kawika Ornellas, Leroy Lutu, Charles Clay, or Dee Maggitt. They will also be unhappy campers due to minimum pt at no#3, unless they all can impress and prove they belong there.

    Basically they all need to use this as a motivational tool and step there game up to the highest level, competing to make permanent mark on the field if they want to stay where there at. Currently perform above and beyond as a 5-star athlete. I just hope there are no strong existing favoritisms lingering because of the stars glazing in the eyes of those that maybe to blind to see a well rounded athlete, and yes it does exist in college football as well, and every where else in the world. We all want the best players on the field and that’s the way it should be.

    I got a note from a prominent village chief who tells me that Mike Milovale is actually of Polynesian heritage, and his name is also a Samoan chiefly name.

    He tells me that there are several families on island with European names that hold the title. Eugene Reid is just such a person. Eugene is the owner of the most popular Burger Stand in Samoa…I think he should advertise as the ‘Fo Real Burger King!

The great folks at Queens have put two years of hard work into standing that Video Interpreter program up, and it has done wonders for them thus far. It is hoped that this system can serve as a model for other hospitals in service to patients who who’s first language is not english.

    Speaking of folks who have served our country admriably, it was great having breakfast with Kekoa and Da Queen of the ceded lands at Nancy’s yesterday. After some in depth discussion with our Big Island family members, it was discovered that our family, along with everyone else in the state, is very deeply related to Kekoa and Aunty Diana!     Derek ~ I had the honor of bringing my military Hawaiian Club members to the town of Bruyerres, France on the (then) 35th anniversary of the liberation of their town by the men of 442nd.

    Not only did they save the town, but this is also where they had rescued the Texas Battalion. A US army unit that was surrounded by the Germans in the mountains just outside of town.

    We had a group of singers and dancers entertain at the town hall on the 1st nite. The next day we gathered at the memorial the town had placed at the main battle site. The men of the 442nd that made the trip from Hawaii had their trip chronicled by KGMB. After all the speeches were made the Mayor and other businessmen opened the town to us.

    All of us representing Hawaii were given buttons to wear that identified us. It allowed us to eat in any restaurant for free. Any retail articles we shopped for was given to us for free. The lodging for those who stayed in the hotels, free. Drinks…on the house. All of this good-will was because of the heroic actions of the 442nd. We felt like we had to maintain the honor of those men, so everyone behaved accordingly. It was such a chicken-skin weekend.

    Now I see that your father was one of those brave soldiers. I can’t tell you how proud I was to have heard the many stories of valor from the people who were saved by he and his men. They even took us to the exact spot where the action took place. They lived up to their motto. They really did, “Go For Broke!”

    Having gone to the source, the WB has learned JD2 received a letter of recommendation from, among others, Maile Chow — even before her father was named head coach. The UH coaches viewed videos of JD2, and were really impressed.

    The point is, the number of walk-ons will be limited under this regime. To get a walk-on shot, a player has to be very good.

    Teams actually are limited to the number of visits and such. You have to make sure the walk-on is recruiting you, not the other way around.

    Rule #1 as a head coach – you can’t please everyone, nor should you try to. NC’s priority is to improve the talent level (no disrespect to the previous coaching regime, past or current players). Fans and observers need to understand that many things under the new coaching regime will not be the same as the past (again, no disrespect to the previous coaching regime or players). Priority should be towards recruiting the best players (worthy of a scholarship). A walk-on had better be pretty good and ready to impress right away. I see nothing wrong with this. If they’re good enough and impress, you’re still going to find a Richard Torres, Cory Paredes, or Bryant Moniz. However, gone are the days when you still keep players that don’t know how to back peddle (Rich Miano’s days) or coaches telling certain players to run laps around Cooke Field during practice, in hopes that they would someday lose the pounds and become contributing players.

    Oh and thanks ST for clearing that up. I would have never gone to the length of standing up for the boy if I never thought that he would be any good. Just watching his video’s made me very impressed in his movements and his ability to read blocks. Like the coaches, I came away very impressed and know that this boy will make an impact. It’s just real sad that there are some people that would even think of a conspiracy theory for the reason that this kid got his chance. Shame on those who think that this kid got his chance because of who his father is. Some kids just do it with hard work and dedication.

    Amen on everything you said. This is a new regime that is bringing big time concepts to (hard to say) small time program. I would say the past two regimes pretty much based there recruiting around what they could get from there walk-on program. JJ was kind of handicapped with budgets and stuff but Mack had none of those problems and still could not bring in a lot of solid talent. I think the recruiting philosophies of this coaching staff is more close to what the big boys do. We may not get all the best but guess what, they now know that Hawaii will be willing to play with the big boys for there services.

    Rule #1AA:

    A head coach will succeed with recruiting the best talent across the country, as long as his assistants do a fine job at it. A head coach cannot do it alone, so his trust and faith in his assistant coaches who are authorize to recruit, is very dependent on it. If not, we’ve seen this happen many times where a head coach cuts loose his entire coaching staff including close friends, in order to revive not only the program, but to save his job as well. Nothing personal, its all about business.

    To help honor our men in uniform, I googled to see if the non-officers played football.

    According to Wikipedia, the US Clark military air base in the Philipines used to have

    football: The football stadium on base, The Bamboo Bowl, later renamed Challenger Field, was largely used for high school football games as the school did not have its own athletic field. In addition to high school football games it also hosted rec league football games for ages 8–18. The high school football teams were actually part of the rec league. The base’s sole high school, Wagner High, actually had multiple football teams. It was also used for the base’s 11 man tackle football league which not only included teams from Clark but from Subic Naval Base as well.

    Clark Air Base was arguably the most urbanized military facility in history, and was the largest American base overseas. At its peak around 1990, it had a permanent population of 15,000. It had a base exchange, a large commissary, a small shopping arcade, a branch department store, cafeterias, teen centers, a hotel, miniature golf, riding stables, and other concessions.

    Angeles City bars were legendary, particularly around the red-light district on Fields Avenue. As a result, Clark’s servicemen’s clubs were under considerable pressure to serve its members with wholesome entertainment. All three were large-scale operations: the Officer’s Club (CABOOM) near the parade ground, the Top Hat Club for NCOs near Lily Hill (moved to near the Silver Wing around 1986), and the Coconut Grove Airmen’s Club with indoor palm trees. The NCO Club was a very extensive operation and operated an upscale dining room, an in-house thrift shop, and a calendar of daily activities. It regularly brought major bands and artists from the United States to perform.

    At least a hundred sponsored clubs and organizations were active on the base, including Knights of Columbus, a Latino American club, martial arts dojos, and more. Two major movie theaters operated daily: the Bobbitt Theater which played first-run films, and the Kelly Theater which showed older releases. By 1988 the Kelly no longer showed films at all but was used for Commander’s Calls and large squadron sized meetings. In the late 1960s and early 1970s movies were also shown at the Bamboo Bowl.

    three years and said, “It was a great time for I played service football and

It is one of the fastest growing towns and Clark Airport will become the Philippine International Airport in a few years replacing Manila when it shuts down. Clark is already an international airport for quite a few asian airlines and countries and the latest airline is Dragon Air, a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific. They will service Clark to Hong Kong, once a week flight with an introductory fare of $70 per person round trip and for the Filipino Overseas workers, $35 one way.     If a person was unemployed and was out job hunting, putting in applications at numerous employers. What would be the chances of them landing that job? How many times would that person ask a family, friend, or even someone they just met if they had a job opening at where they work at? A series of questions would follow, “Do you have the pull? Can you talk to your boss in hiring me? Could I use you as reference?”.

    One way or another, 85-95% of the time we all have gone down this road before. 75-80% of the time we get hired because we know someone who works there, or the person we know has a good relationship with someone who knows someone else who works there. So the chances of knowing someone who know someone, that knows someone else is always an advantage in everyday life. JJ, NC, and many of the other coaches has a good relationship with people in the NFL who gave opportunities to our former warriors, rather then those who don’t.

    So when a statement is made saying that JD2’s Father does some sort of administrative work at lower campus rings a bell that some sort of line of connection was made, due to the fact that others never had including scholly players who where currently on the roster. But now its being clarified differently and kinda late that he was being looked at prior, kinda hard to believe considering the amount of top athletes coming out of the state from numerous D1 schools prior and to date. That’s just my opinion on it, don’t take it personal.

    I try not to hurt people’s feelings, but in the more than quarter century I’ve been a UH beat writer, I know that winning is more important to a coach than anything else. So if a player is cut or doesn’t start, hate to say this, sometimes they’re just not better than the other guy. Does that mean they’re not good players? No. Not at all. Often they’re very, very good players. It just means that others are better. Sometimes it is a numbers game. Sometimes it’s just bad timing. It’s easier to blame others but sometimes someone is just better.

    There were these two high school teammates. Both were good athletes. Both were really good guys. One got a scholarship, the other didn’t. The second guy tried to walk on, but didn’t make the team. The guy who got the scholarship was playing a need position. The guy who didn’t was battling a very talented group featuring a few who would go on to the pros.

    Any other time, maybe . . .

    But this is what the whole debate is about, right? That some feel a spot is being taken by a less-deserving person. Well, this is the coaches’ decision. They’re not going to waste time on someone who can’t help.

    I’m based in both Singapore and Manila and in Asia budget airlines are huge.

    Most flights are 3 hours or less with great stops such as Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, Osaka, Incheon, etc. The budget airlines cost are extremely low…much lower then forgive me but Hawaiian Airlines to an outer island.

    Here’s something funny… for a while I supplied teriyaki spam musubis on Cebu Pacific Airlines international routes. But I stopped, sometimes you wait 3 months or more before the airlines pays you–not good for cash flow and operations 🙂

    What the airlines does to cut back costs…is because most trips are short…they allow vendors to sell their food, drinks, snacks, etc. on consignment on board the airlines. That way the passengers still have options for in-flight items if they want-in fact much more variety!

    More importantly, the airlines saves by not buying food items, and then saves again by collecting a percentage of sales from the consignment deal with vendors. This way they do not pass any added hidden costs in the ticket to passengers. Anyways, it’s just one of the things they do…but all vendors must use the airlines logo or name on the packaging…passengers have no idea that food items do not come from the airlines in-flight kitchen 🙂

    Just thought I’d share that…food-tailgating-football-road games-travel-airlines-food on airlines…it’s all relevant 🙂

    The answer is a resounding YES! Schofield Barracks was a hotbed of Military Football in the late 50’s & early 60’s. Lots of local talent on display under the Lights. Local boys like Bobby Park and Skippy Gomard to name a few were playing in the Infantry Division Intramural league. Their *Cacti* team was the crowd favorite.

    I remember going with my uncles to watch and hang with the players after, since they were former HS teamates that chose to go into the service. When Viet Nam cranked up, it cut the intramural program at company level, and left just the larger Post level teams barely breathing.

    I had played one season in Korea in ’65. I had another opportunity at Ft. Lewis WA., but the team was due to disband by the end of our ’74 season. We were told the the Army could no longer support the program for lack of funding.

    When I arrived in Europe, the Air Force was starting their last season. With no Army teams to play, and just a smattering of German Club teams. Football suffered a horrible setback. When I left Europe in 1980, the World Football league had just started recruiting players, and not surprisingly a few of the players came from out of the US Military. Colleges recruited players out of these club teams, some got NFL tryouts.

    What’s interesting to note is at the same time, 9 out of our 11 US Olympic boxers were from out of the military. It wasn’t unusual to go to the Post Gym at Ft. Bragg and see the entire ABC Sports Crew doing a broadcast of our boxers Vs Foreign fighters. Tune up matches prior to the Games.

    The military Sports program today consists mostly of smaller team sports, but at a much higher level of competition. Teams like Men’s Volleyball in all branches of the service are played at certain times of the year.

    Training camp coaches accept nominees from the various units from around the world. They usually meet at a training camp like Ft. Shafter to select the final 20 players for the All Army Team for instance. Pearl Harbor might be hosting the All Navy Team, and so on. Once they have had time to practice and play games against some local colleges, they will meet for the InterService Competition for the Championship match.

    It doesn’t matter what youjr military job is. You are on temporary assignment orders to play Volleyball, period. Your unit loses admin control of you during the entire time you are playing and traveling around the world with the team. That’s why your friend from college was so happy to play military football back in the day! That was his ‘job.’

    CS boy ~ I don’t recall that name. There were many veterans that were in attendance back then. So many names and faces, so little time to get to know them. The memorial that the town put up, names everyone who participated in that battle.

    If you should ever have the opportunity to plan a visit, you should. It is a beautiful mountain town that looks so peaceful today. Hard to imagine the horrible conditions they suffered thru then. The photos they have of the town is one of almost total destruction!

    kawika ~ Tried for have my friend build UH West campus with a new type of concrete. This stuff is amazing. It’s fireproof, waterproof (resists mold & mildew), termite proof and that alone should have been considered as the best material to use. Other worthy ‘green’ components to it, as well as strength and speed in putting the building up.

    Bottom line…not a union contractor. When they were told that it is a new company willingly to train union workers to work with this system, and get certified…they just pulled out of the negotiations. Unions, pftttt.

    Had they let my friend do the project, the school would have been ready LAST summer instead of this August. Lord help those kids if the AC ever goes out, or there is a fire.

    Sky boxes at the Stan is very doable. The money isn’t.

    Sometimes things are just not meant to be. The late Jesse Mahelona (Kealakehe HS) is an example. He spent a couple of years in the UH program, decided that going to a JUCO in CA would probably be best, and it was (JUCO AA honors resulting in a scholarship to Tennessee where he was a 2-yr starter). Kimo Von Oelhoffen was another example of a player who walked on at UH from Molokai HS, then transferred to a JUCO in Washington resulting in a scholarship to Boise State, and then an NFL career of some 12 years. Had both players remained at UH, I think their lives would have been quite different.

    The impression I get from Norm Chow and his staff is that they are not intimidated by BCS schools when recruiting players. Instead of backing off from a recruit that is being recruited by BCS schools, NC and his staff seem to recruit even harder. June Jones would back off and look elsewhere when such a situation occurred (correct me if I’m wrong).

    With OL depth issues still a concern, where are the OL walk-ons?

    Adding 5 new OL this Fall, but still doesn’t make up for the 12 OL lost from last season…..8 scholie OL (Faaumu, Hansen, Laurel, Lefiti, Legay, Leonard, Olds, Sapolu)….and 4 walk-on OL (Collins, Daniel, Lim, Purdy)…..with Hollowed the only remaining OL walk-on from last season.

    Still gotta have enough OL to line up for the scout team for regular season practices.

    Gigi ~ Pathfinders are highly regarded elite paratroopers in an airborne unit. Not everyone completes the course certification. They are the 1st ones in as they lead the way for the others to follow. That’s why some develop a weird sense of humor. It helps take the edge off and allows you to just get out and do it!

    We have parachute riggers who are trained to pack many of the chutes. Periodically, they are required to go on jumps with the rest of us. They reach into a bin full of chutes and grab one at random for the jump. Pretty good way of maintaining quality control huh? When you have 18,000 jumpers in the skies over Ft. Bragg, it gets a little crazy.

    Like I told you about your golf swing. Nice & easy. Relax & enjoy the ride, just have the mental checklist ready for any emergency and ultimately, that sudden halt.

If you feel JD has done something wrong, get off your arse and do something about it, bring it up with him or the UH administration. It’s pretty shame that this person is a so called insider and is willing to make a young person look like crap just because his dad is the AD. This isn’t unique from what all high school graduates and their parents go through. But what is different is the kid was being ripped, with baseless accusations of favoritism.

    kekoa, derek…subject matter: 442/522.

    my dad was a member of the 522 artillery that was attached to the 442nd during the rush hour of the battle. the interesting story is this…

    his three cousins(actually his nephews) were drafted and sent to europe with the 442nd. his brother in law (mom’s brother) was also in that same bunch. my dad felt shame that the us army didn’t draft him as 35 year old. he tried to volunteer several times only to be denied. finally as casualties took its toll with the 442nd they took him in much to his delight. he felt he had to go protect his family.

    fast track training identified him as an expert sharpshooter. he entered the 522 artillery as a machine gunner. you know the one who is the main target of the enemy in the field. he survived a shot in the butt only to volunteer to rejoin his men well before he was physically ready. he finished the war and came home with all of his cousins and bro-in-law. mission accomplished.

    yup, i, too am awfully proud of that man.

    What’s interesting is that my first thought when I saw JD2’s video was, “how come he wasn’t offered a scholarship?”. My second thought was that as ST said earlier, sometimes, there aren’t enough schollies to go around. JD2 is a good ballplayer, anyone who has been around the game long enough will look at the video and be able to tell you that. It also appears that he has some of the intrinsic qualities that cannot be measured at a combine.

    My gut feeling is that JD2 is the type of ball player that will be around for a long time and will experience much success at the division one level. He doesn’t jump out at you on screen like an Isaac Savaiinaea or Manti Te’o does. He’s more of an ‘Ola Gouveia or Kaluka Maiava journeyman type who just ends up always being around the ball and is in the right place at the right time. Those are the money type players. Been wrong before, but that is my opiion of JD2 at this time.

    Have had the opportunity to meet JD1 before and in my limited experiences with him, he appears to be the type of person that goes out of his way to make sure that everything that he does, is done with the utmost of integrity. JD1 has a lot of positive qualities about him, but the one that defines him best is integrity. Nuff said.
