Michigan having their football players train with the Navy Seals can only help their players on and off the field in the future.

Hoke became particularly fond of the U.S. Navy SEALs during his two-year stint at San Diego State, which is located near a naval base. He since has tried to instill the specialized force’s maxims for discipline and leadership in his teams.

He took that to a new level last week, when he sent 22 of his seniors to Southern California for a four-day summit with the SEALs. They also worked with kids at a clinic in Pasadena.

“This is part of the growth and development of my players as young men,” Hoke told the Pasadena Sun. “When they go through the game of football, there are life lessons that are taught — them being accountable and having great commitment to each other.”

“The one thing we noticed about these great athletes and men that we were around, is that after they left football, they just didn’t know how to be leaders,” Wellman told the Sun. “They didn’t understand what a leader is and what is expected of a leader and that’s something we wanted to change.”

Jmho, Maybe not so great news for, CB’s Bubba Poueu-Luna and Mike Sellers who both are entering fall camp as starters and may get bumped down the dept chart due to JHT moving over too FS if that’s the case. One of these back ups are going to get bumped down the dept chart to 3rd string, Kawika Ornellas, Leroy Lutu, Charles Clay, or Dee Maggitt. They will also be unhappy campers due to minimum pt at no#3, unless they all can impress and prove they belong there.

Basically they all need to use this as a motivational tool and step there game up to the highest level, competing to make permanent mark on the field if they want to stay where there at. Currently perform above and beyond as a 5-star athlete. I just hope there are no strong existing favoritisms lingering because of the stars glazing in the eyes of those that maybe to blind to see a well rounded athlete, and yes it does exist in college football as well, and every where else in the world. We all want the best players on the field and that’s the way it should be.

I got a note from a prominent village chief who tells me that Mike Milovale is actually of Polynesian heritage, and his name is also a Samoan chiefly name.

He tells me that there are several families on island with European names that hold the title. Eugene Reid is just such a person. Eugene is the owner of the most popular Burger Stand in Samoa…I think he should advertise as the ‘Fo Real Burger King!

Thanks for the heads up about Sweety on the SA front page today! The great folks at Queens have put two years of hard work into standing that Video Interpreter program up, and it has done wonders for them thus far. It is hoped that this system can serve as a model for other hospitals in service to patients who who’s first language is not english.

Interesting. In first year of the Warrior Beat blog, I was collecting blog names and trying to identify the mainland and international bloggers. Jason was collecting which high school everyone attended.

I think Jason felt that people would rally/socialize among their high school classmates.

Speaking of folks who have served our country admriably, it was great having breakfast with Kekoa and Da Queen of the ceded lands at Nancy’s yesterday. After some in depth discussion with our Big Island family members, it was discovered that our family, along with everyone else in the state, is very deeply related to Kekoa and Aunty Diana! So like it or not big fella, from here on it out, it’s “Uncle Kekoa” for you! Honored to have you folks so closely related to us! 🙂

BTW – “Uncle” Kekoa, you and Aunty Diana will be happy to know that your Nephew Israel and the rest of da Puna kua’aina will be playing for 3rd place in the state at 12:30 today down at Waipio! Mahalo again for erryting! 😉

Myself, I like Turn(er) the Corner.

Derek ~ I had the honor of bringing my military Hawaiian Club members to the town of Bruyerres, France on the (then) 35th anniversary of the liberation of their town by the men of 442nd.

Not only did they save the town, but this is also where they had rescued the Texas Battalion. A US army unit that was surrounded by the Germans in the mountains just outside of town.

We had a group of singers and dancers entertain at the town hall on the 1st nite. The next day we gathered at the memorial the town had placed at the main battle site. The men of the 442nd that made the trip from Hawaii had their trip chronicled by KGMB. After all the speeches were made the Mayor and other businessmen opened the town to us.

All of us representing Hawaii were given buttons to wear that identified us. It allowed us to eat in any restaurant for free. Any retail articles we shopped for was given to us for free. The lodging for those who stayed in the hotels, free. Drinks…on the house. All of this good-will was because of the heroic actions of the 442nd. We felt like we had to maintain the honor of those men, so everyone behaved accordingly. It was such a chicken-skin weekend.

Now I see that your father was one of those brave soldiers. I can’t tell you how proud I was to have heard the many stories of valor from the people who were saved by he and his men. They even took us to the exact spot where the action took place. They lived up to their motto. They really did, “Go For Broke!”

Looking forward to Fall, and the finalizing of our roster for the upcoming season.

Taking a pause for the cause… remembering and honoring those who paid the ultimate price in the name of freedom.

Not on much lately, as our internet connection seems to want to be memorialized soon also. So much for high speed cable internet. Too bad the neighborhood we’re in is specifically a single-cable-company neighborhood. Yet another reason to move back home soon! Hahaha!

Rule #1 as a head coach – you can’t please everyone, nor should you try to. NC’s priority is to improve the talent level (no disrespect to the previous coaching regime, past or current players). Fans and observers need to understand that many things under the new coaching regime will not be the same as the past (again, no disrespect to the previous coaching regime or players). Priority should be towards recruiting the best players (worthy of a scholarship). A walk-on had better be pretty good and ready to impress right away. I see nothing wrong with this. If they’re good enough and impress, you’re still going to find a Richard Torres, Cory Paredes, or Bryant Moniz. However, gone are the days when you still keep players that don’t know how to back peddle (Rich Miano’s days) or coaches telling certain players to run laps around Cooke Field during practice, in hopes that they would someday lose the pounds and become contributing players.

Amen on everything you said. This is a new regime that is bringing big time concepts to (hard to say) small time program. I would say the past two regimes pretty much based there recruiting around what they could get from there walk-on program. JJ was kind of handicapped with budgets and stuff but Mack had none of those problems and still could not bring in a lot of solid talent. I think the recruiting philosophies of this coaching staff is more close to what the big boys do. We may not get all the best but guess what, they now know that Hawaii will be willing to play with the big boys for there services.

The answer is a resounding YES! Schofield Barracks was a hotbed of Military Football in the late 50’s & early 60’s. Lots of local talent on display under the Lights. Local boys like Bobby Park and Skippy Gomard to name a few were playing in the Infantry Division Intramural league. Their *Cacti* team was the crowd favorite.

I remember going with my uncles to watch and hang with the players after, since they were former HS teamates that chose to go into the service. When Viet Nam cranked up, it cut the intramural program at company level, and left just the larger Post level teams barely breathing.

I had played one season in Korea in ’65. I had another opportunity at Ft. Lewis WA., but the team was due to disband by the end of our ’74 season. We were told the the Army could no longer support the program for lack of funding.

When I arrived in Europe, the Air Force was starting their last season. With no Army teams to play, and just a smattering of German Club teams. Football suffered a horrible setback. When I left Europe in 1980, the World Football league had just started recruiting players, and not surprisingly a few of the players came from out of the US Military. Colleges recruited players out of these club teams, some got NFL tryouts.

What’s interesting to note is at the same time, 9 out of our 11 US Olympic boxers were from out of the military. It wasn’t unusual to go to the Post Gym at Ft. Bragg and see the entire ABC Sports Crew doing a broadcast of our boxers Vs Foreign fighters. Tune up matches prior to the Games.

CS boy ~ I don’t recall that name. There were many veterans that were in attendance back then. So many names and faces, so little time to get to know them. The memorial that the town put up, names everyone who participated in that battle.

If you should ever have the opportunity to plan a visit, you should. It is a beautiful mountain town that looks so peaceful today. Hard to imagine the horrible conditions they suffered thru then. The photos they have of the town is one of almost total destruction!

Derek — sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. My mom started helping out with 442nd M company meetings recently and notes that they are few and most are over 90 now. She got drawn in by my aunt (mother of Gaye at Genji’s) whose husband and my father served together in the 442nd. Al’s father was in the 442nd also

Another uncle went into Punchbowl earlier this month. Each year makes Memorial Day sadder and more significant.

NC had a lot of nice things to say about Ronald Fields, and if he works out…our secondary should be exciting to watch with Turner, Edwards and JHT. I also thought that Dee Maggitt should have played more because he looked like a playmaker when the lights went on.

We were always lighter then the legs, but we made it up with determination; and hitting below the belt.

kawika ~ Tried for have my friend build UH West campus with a new type of concrete. This stuff is amazing. It’s fireproof, waterproof (resists mold & mildew), termite proof and that alone should have been considered as the best material to use. Other worthy ‘green’ components to it, as well as strength and speed in putting the building up.

Bottom line…not a union contractor. When they were told that it is a new company willingly to train union workers to work with this system, and get certified…they just pulled out of the negotiations. Unions, pftttt.

Had they let my friend do the project, the school would have been ready LAST summer instead of this August. Lord help those kids if the AC ever goes out, or there is a fire.

Sky boxes at the Stan is very doable. The money isn’t.

must have been a bad year for USC, Texas, Oklahoma State and Arizona State, none of them made the 64 teams selected for regional play.

Sometimes things are just not meant to be. The late Jesse Mahelona (Kealakehe HS) is an example. He spent a couple of years in the UH program, decided that going to a JUCO in CA would probably be best, and it was (JUCO AA honors resulting in a scholarship to Tennessee where he was a 2-yr starter). Kimo Von Oelhoffen was another example of a player who walked on at UH from Molokai HS, then transferred to a JUCO in Washington resulting in a scholarship to Boise State, and then an NFL career of some 12 years. Had both players remained at UH, I think their lives would have been quite different.

if you didn’t personally ask June Jones if he backed off from recruiting players on the BCS radar than you could be wrong. “June Jones would back off” are strong words, it could be your opinion but you state it as though you are in the “know”.

BTW…..OT walk-on Mahaulu also an uncertainty to be with the team in the Fall…..so could be 13 OL lost from last season.

Adding 5 new OL still leaves a deficit of at least 7 OL compared to last season.

Gigi ~ Pathfinders are highly regarded elite paratroopers in an airborne unit. Not everyone completes the course certification. They are the 1st ones in as they lead the way for the others to follow. That’s why some develop a weird sense of humor. It helps take the edge off and allows you to just get out and do it!

Kawika was a Pathfinder? Sounds like a dangerous assignment.

If you feel JD has done something wrong, get off your arse and do something about it, bring it up with him or the UH administration. It gets old fast hearing the “cry baby” things are not fair victim whine. Just whining about it will not change anything, having the victim mentality will not change anything. Only action on your part will change things. So which are you? a victim whiner or a person of action?

Unbelievable. New Mexico State made the baseball regional as a #2 seed. And this is a team that UH swept 3 straight at home.

Another point: I can’t help but think of the the son of a a “UH administrator in the quarry” who walked onto the Warrior program a few years back and has stuck around at receiver and even made some good plays for us last year. Of course, we all remember Justin Clapp…

What’s interesting is that my first thought when I saw JD2’s video was, “how come he wasn’t offered a scholarship?”. My second thought was that as ST said earlier, sometimes, there aren’t enough schollies to go around. JD2 is a good ballplayer, anyone who has been around the game long enough will look at the video and be able to tell you that. It also appears that he has some of the intrinsic qualities that cannot be measured at a combine.

My gut feeling is that JD2 is the type of ball player that will be around for a long time and will experience much success at the division one level. He doesn’t jump out at you on screen like an Isaac Savaiinaea or Manti Te’o does. He’s more of an ‘Ola Gouveia or Kaluka Maiava journeyman type who just ends up always being around the ball and is in the right place at the right time. Those are the money type players. Been wrong before, but that is my opiion of JD2 at this time.

Have had the opportunity to meet JD1 before and in my limited experiences with him, he appears to be the type of person that goes out of his way to make sure that everything that he does, is done with the utmost of integrity. JD1 has a lot of positive qualities about him, but the one that defines him best is integrity. Nuff said.
