Cool times

LEWISTON — The Warriors had a brisk practice this afternoon at Lewiston High School, where the mercury was in the low 50s. The forecast called for the 40s, so it was considered to be somewhat balmy, in comparison. Still, several players wore attachable pouches to keep their hands warm between plays.

It won’t be a problem for Saturday’s game.

“We’re gonna be playing indoors,” defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu said of the game in the Kibbie Dome, where the Warriors will conduct a walk-through tomorrow.

Linebackers Corey Paredes and Aaron Brown resumed practicing today. Paredes has a strained PCL, and Brown has an ankle condition.

Because the Warriors don’t have their usual scout players because of travel-roster limitations, the offense and defense took turns with matchups between a first-team unit and second-team squad. The offensive starters practiced their plays for six minutes, with the defensive starters getting their turn, and so forth.

After practice, the players were given free time. The hotel is on the same property as a sporting-goods store and two fast-food restaurants. During these times, the players wondered what it would be like if a measure to provide stipends were in place already.

Steve Christian Sr. said his son, Steve Jr., a UH safety, will undergo hip surgery next month. Steve Christian Jr. is scheduled to earn a bachelor’s degree in May, after which he will transfer to a school where he can play as a fifth-year player. The NCAA allows students who have graduated in four years and used a redshirt to play at another school without having to sit out a season.

I’m copying this post from yesterday’s blog, and hoping someone can shed some light on how it translates to our UHAD budget, when compared to the budget of other schools:

All the recent talk about what UH pays out compared to other mid-majors got me wondering and wandering around the web…

    And I came across this:

    http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx

It’s a Cost of Living comparison calculator.

I kept gross annual income at $50k for comparisons’ sake. So, to maintain your standard of living in Hawaii, that $50k is equal to:

    $29,329.85 in Boise, ID… a difference of -41.34%

    $30,501.15 in Reno, NV… -39.00%

    $30,741.69 in Las Vegas, NV… -38.52%

    $35,424.75 in Fresno, CA… -29.15%

    $47,125.46 in San Jose, CA… -5.75%

    $30,361.50 in Las Cruces, NM… -39.28%

I understand that this is just an approximation, using certain goods and services to determine cost. It also does not include other factors such as those related to unions. But, it still gives us a general idea of how far our UHAD dollars goes when compared to our peers.

Whenever we borrow the facilities of schools on the mainland, especially that of high school football teams, is there any interest from players and coaches of those schools, and possibly exchanges of videos, etc.?

  15. WarriorMojo October 27, 2011 7:53 am

I mean there’s a reason why the feds pay a tax-free cost of living allowance to federal employees in Hawaii. Last I checked, that was 28%.

There’s also a reason why Hoku Scientific, a Hawaii corporation, decided to build their plant in Idaho rather than Hawaii.

Boise’s low cost of living allowed them to use their Fiesta Bowl money to upgrade their stadium and other facilities. Ours was used to pay down UHAD’s “accumulated debt.”

So let’s acknowledge BSU’s accomplishments, which are truly awesome, but also recognize the disparities between the programs.

By most geographic/social/economic/cultural/demographic measures, Hawaii is and will always be an anomoly vis a vis our mainland opponents. The trick here is to think outside of the box and to maximize asset synergy.

These are the times when I miss JJ, because he understood Hawaii and was a master of making the most out of our situation. I still like his idea of a small stadium on UH’s campus.

Rest assured, there is at least one person on the upper campus who’s fully engaged in UH’s dilemma regarding athletics. This crap about paying our oponents’ full travel expenses to the islands is untenable. We start at such a disadvantage with our own travel and limited budgetary resources, it feels as though we’re hamstrung before we even take the field.

    Solutions are out there somewhere…

  42. Pomai October 27, 2011 9:02 am

Just released – Hawaii is now second to Maryland in the millionaire count, as of the last count Hawaii has 30,793 millionaires. Now they consider a millionaire by liquid assets, not to include real estate or retirement accounts, which means that such millionaires can get their hands on a million dollars right now. Now if all the millionaires would donate 5 grand each(which would be tax deductible) to UHAD that would work out to over 153 million. I think we could upgrade our facilities with that and have a little left over.

  43. madeinhawaii October 27, 2011 9:06 am

The Federal non-foreign COLA + LOCALITY RATES can be found here. These are based on the difference of costs for 300 common items.

    http://www.chcoc.gov/Transmittals/TransmittalDetails.aspx?TransmittalID=3300

    For Oahu, that difference would be 11.01 + 16.07 = 27.08%

So if Mack is getting 1 million he is essentially getting 730K as compared to his peers on the mainland.

  44. (Jesse) James October 27, 2011 9:07 am

    Pomai#42….Yep…

Heck, even if everyone of UH’s alumni were to donate a mere $10 to the University, that would equate to approximately $2.5 million, which isn’t chump change…

  46. Garret October 27, 2011 9:17 am

The NCAA approved a lot of rule changes, including the $2k/month stipend for student-athletes. Each conference will decide on whether or not they will approve the $2k/month, so the AQ conferences will and conferences like the Sun Belt and maybe WAC will not.

Conferences will now vote on whether to add $2,000 in spending money to scholarship offers. Previously, scholarships covered the costs of tuition, room and board, books and fees. But Emmert came out earlier this week in favor of increasing the allowable money, which the NCAA calls full cost-of-attendance.

BCS leagues are expected to quickly approve the changes, but it’s unclear how many other conferences can afford it. All additional funding in men’s sports would have to be matched equally in women’s sports because of Title IX rules.

  47. Garret October 27, 2011 9:18 am

Coaches can offer multi-year or year-by-year scholarships…so, a recruit could choose from a 4-year offer from 1 school vs. a 1-year guarantee from another school.

Individual schools also will have the option of awarding scholarships on a multiple-year basis or keeping the current model, which is done year-by-year. Critics contend the move is long overdue.

  48. Garret October 27, 2011 9:18 am

The APR is going up significantly and schools will not be able to play in the postseason if they fall below the APR.

The board also decided to phase in the new Academic Progress Rate cutline over four years. In August, presidents approved increasing the cutline from the current 900 to 930. Schools that fail to meet the benchmark will be ineligible for postseason play.

  49. madeinhawaii October 27, 2011 9:20 am

Shoots I thought it was 2K for the school year.. but every month?!?! .. das a lot of disposable income for a young kid. With a down payment, you could buy a house for your years in college.

  50. Garret October 27, 2011 9:20 am

Admissions standards have gone significantly up now…if some Hawaii recruits were barely making the 2.0 GPA requirement, the 2.3 requirement is going to be tough. Students have to have 10 core classes before their senior year, which means that students cannot mess around too much early on and try to make it up before graduation.

In addition, the board agreed to increase eligibility requirements for incoming freshmen and junior college transfers. Both groups needed a 2.0 GPA to be eligible. Now, high school grads will need to maintain a 2.3 GPA in the 16 core courses and take 10 of those core classes before their senior year. Junior college players will have to maintain a 2.5 GPA and the NCAA will limit the number of physical education credits that will count toward eligibility.

  51. Wes'side Warrior October 27, 2011 9:24 am

I think the $2k stipend should be universally adopted for every NCAA member school, and paid for with BCS money. Level this playing field… not make the divide between haves and have-nots greater!

  52. madeinhawaii October 27, 2011 9:30 am

There’s going to be a lot more accidents with college athletes as they buy motorcycles, mopeds, fast cars and drugs.

  53. Shoko October 27, 2011 9:32 am

    MW,

Thats the question, where does the money come from?

  54. madeinhawaii October 27, 2011 9:34 am

    Shoko,

From that article you just posted… is that $2000 fund the same $2000/mo Garret is talking about? It doesn’t look like an allowance for all but on an as need basis in terms of “help.”

  55. Shoko October 27, 2011 9:41 am

Pretty sure its 2K/month as Garret suggested. But it has to be across the board. Meaning that every school has to be given subsidies from the NCAA to afford it given that not all schools can afford it during the budget deficits. Can’t compete with bigger schools that bring in bigger revenues like other BCS schools.

  56. el burro sabio October 27, 2011 9:41 am

$2K per month doesn’t sound right, that’s $18K more per year in addition to meeting most of the cost of attendance. $2K per year makes more sense.

    http://manoa.hawaii.edu/about/facts/finance/cost_attendance.html

  57. madeinhawaii October 27, 2011 9:43 am

Say what you will about Coach Mack and Company but according to that article Shoko just posted…

Earlier this year, the Board had voted to set the minimum academic standard for post-season participation as a 930 Academic Progress Rate (APR). The 930 APR predicts roughly a 50 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR).

Hartford University president and Committee on Academic Performance chair Walter Harrison highlights the academic reform passed by the Board of Directors.

The new post-season eligibility structure will take effect in the 2012-13 academic year, with a two-year implementation window before the benchmark moves from 900 to 930. For access to post-season competition in 2012-13 and 2013-14, teams must achieve a 900 multi-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years to be eligible.

In 2014-15, teams that don’t achieve the 930 benchmark for their four-year APR or at least a 940 average for the most recent two years will be ineligible for post-season competition.

    He’s keeping us eligible.

  58. Garret October 27, 2011 9:43 am

    Shoko,

Every Athletic Department has to cover the increased costs for their student-athletes. Boise State’s President came out against that increase due to the strain it would put on their budget. San Diego State’s AD actually was in favor of the increase to $2k.

They are letting each conference decide whether or not to increase the stipend. The schools that cannot afford it will vote against it and then there will be a division between D-IA schools. This actually impacts way more than football–basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc. all will get the $2k/month or will stay at current levels (at UH I think that is a little more than $500/month). If a volleyball recruit can choose between a school with a $2k/month stipend and one with a $500/month stipend, especially a recruit from a poor family, that could make a difference.

  59. Garret October 27, 2011 9:45 am

    el burro sabio,

Thank you for pointing that out. If it is $2k per year, that really isn’t a big deal.

But don’t scholarship athletes already get over $6k in stipend money at UH?

  60. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 9:48 am

If you are at a JC and don’t have a 2.5 gpa, where do you go after your associate degree? NAIA or not play sports or is it possible to continue in JC until you pass. But then you lose years of eligibility.

  61. Garret October 27, 2011 9:48 am

USA estimated the true cost of attendance for UH student-athletes would require a $6,281/year stipend per student-athlete. That would come out to $1.52 mil/year for UHAD.

Thinking about it and calming down, I realize that the numbers couldn’t be for $2k/month. So, if the number is just $2k/year, that would be about $500k/year for UHAD…that is manageable for UH’s Athletic Budget.

Okay, I’m not upset anymore about this rule and I hope that $2k/year is accepted by the MWC and Big West or UH will be looked upon differently by recruits.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2011-07-29-athletic-departments-cost-of-attendance_n.htm

  62. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 9:53 am

Does this $2000 include the athletes while are in summer school the UH pays? That’s more than my retirement. Makes me want to strap it up. Problem is I can’t even find the straps. lol

  63. Kevin October 27, 2011 9:53 am

$2000 a year won’t seperate the BCS schools from the rest of the schools. That’s why I think it really is $2000 per month.

  66. Garret October 27, 2011 9:56 am

I remember a number of UH student-athletes talking about getting a stipend check each month from UH. Now that I think about it, most or all of those student-athletes lived off-campus, so maybe that was the check for housing expenses for those living off-campus.

$2k/year would cover stuff like laundry money and other basic expenses but won’t break UHAD’s budget. The old proposal had UH at over $6k/year so $2k/year isn’t bad for the budget.

  68. jm2375 October 27, 2011 9:57 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

WM – COLA is being phased out with locality pay replacing it. COLA is non-federally taxable but not used in retirement pay calculations, whereas locality pay is taxable but figures into the retirement pay.

CoolEthan – my cousin in Reno posted yesterday that it was 33 degrees. 👿

2K/mo = $24K/yr. Unless it’s gone up (and I hope it has), isn’t that what a GA gets?

  69. Garret October 27, 2011 9:59 am

$2k/year would come out to about $500k for WAC/Sun Belt schools, which means they could play another $1 mil bodybag game and make up the money.

It should also be noted that the NCAA basketball payout was increased *significantly*, so each game in the NCAA tournament (starting this past year) was worth $1.44 mil…that was below $1 mil not that long ago. So the NCAA basketball money could cancel out the stipend in many school’s budgets.

  70. Buffoman October 27, 2011 10:04 am

With all of the jockeying and speculating regarding teams from the MWC going elsewhere, and Thompson attempting to fill the void(s), his trump card is, as crazy as it sounds, Hawaii. “Come join our conference and you get to play in Hawaii and your trip will be subsidized.”

Sound like we’re getting it where the sun don’t shine. I for one, cannot see the huge benefit of making the move at this point as the MWC without those schools makes getting the “hall pass” to the BCS somewhat moot. Couple that with the susbsidy we have to pay, a crappy TV deal, no PPV revenue, why are we moving?

The WAC is a poor man’s conference, but the watered down MWC is not far behind. If we are doomed to be relegated to these types of conferences, for whatever reasons, why not make it such that we are at least in a position to be profitable? I just do not see the big dollars in the MWC…and we’re being screwed by having to pay travel subsidies to whoever comes in. That’s nuts!

Hope those guys up there are being proactive about what’s best in this situation for the school. My thoughts, go back to the WAC now and say, let’s keep it as it was, no subsidies for anyone, ever! At least we’re not bleeding at that point.

  71. Wes'side Warrior October 27, 2011 10:14 am

I think I read that Benson was offering for us to keep football only in the WAC with no travel subs. If Boise and Air Force leave, it would make more sense to convice whatever top remaining MWC teams into coming back to the WAC.

  73. Stephen Tsai October 27, 2011 10:28 am

What will be interesting isn’t so much the difference among conferences, because everyone will have the same stipend limit, but between scholarship players and walk-ons. Already there’s a huge status gap, with walk-ons not being allowed to eat training-table meals. It’s particularly hard when a walk-on is a starter (although, I believe, this might be the first time when every starter is on scholarship).

    NCAA GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE

    WAC FOOTBALL

    1. Utah State 77

    2. Louisiana Tech 75

    3. Idaho 71

    4. Nevada 70

    5. Fresno State 62

    6. New Mexico State 57

    7. Hawaii 51

    8. San Jose State 44

Hawaii is only at 51 Graduation Rate? I though we were much better than that…

That’s embarrassing We need to bring that up Mac!

Suprise to see Utah State, Louis Tec and Idaho all above 70!?

I agree and we’re not even close to level of WAC Graduation Rate with the rest.

  81. Kevin October 27, 2011 10:59 am

    Where’s the money going?

The desparity between schollie and non-schollie athletes in all sports is huge. In football’s case, we’re heard that before the season started several schollie players were NOT invited to the fall camp. Heard Coach Miano cite that some walk ons were showing more potential.

Unless I heard wrong, are we giving out schollies to the right people? This is a question that has been asked many times and now with the potential of schollie players getting a ‘raise’ for a lack of a better term, the issue is now more pressing.

80 something scholarships to give out compared to other sports and yet some are getting beat out by walk ons? Nothing against walk-ons, more power to them for sure! But what the hell? In hindsight… it should have been the other way around right?

Other sports don’t have mana raining down from heaven to give out that many schollies so other sports have to be more prudent, but is this an example of too many schollies for one sport or miscalculations dating back to the recruiting decisions?

  82. Kevin October 27, 2011 11:02 am

UH football’s graduation rate increased under Mack.

I cannot recall anyone shouting about it being an issue before.

We were winning more before so I guess that silences the concerns of some over academic issues.

  83. Stephen Tsai October 27, 2011 11:02 am

The rate is from those entering 2001 to 2004

  84. mikey October 27, 2011 11:06 am

Do we get to pay for travel subsidy for all of Conference USA by defaults or any new member into MWC and Big West?

think about it… We’re only digging hole dipper

Stay in WAC and no Travel Subsidy is the best deal for me.

Plus I much rather go to Denver, San Antonio, TX rather than Wyoming and Boise.

  85. Buffoman October 27, 2011 11:06 am

#72, it would be tough getting them to go back. Especially the Reno folks as when the decided to leave they were essentially screwing UH, as I recall they convinced Fresno to go along with them. What Reno has to now loose if they went back is that they’d have to cough up their own way to Hawaii to play. In the MWC we pay for them to come play. May just be $150k or so, but in these tight times, they’re squeezing everything they can.

I say, just go back to the WAC now, lock in the no travel subsidies (ironclad contract) and just accept the fact that the only ones inviting us to dance are those who were not asked to the BCS ball. If nobody wants us, no use wishing for something that will not happen in a timely manner, if at all, just look for the best financial deal and live with it.

Right now, MWC is not looking like the dance partner we thought we saw from across the room. Go back quick to the one you spurnned previously before that one changes their mind.

  86. Kevin October 27, 2011 11:06 am

Can’t remember who posted the stats, but I think the national college graduation rate average (including non athletes and athletes) was around 51-55 percent.

UH Manoa as a whole was around the 47-49 percent mark.

However, if you just take the student-athletes at Manoa (around 400+ students total) then the student-athlete body’s graduation rate was close to 75-80 percent.

  87. al October 27, 2011 11:10 am

is it a bump of 2k per month or per year?

is it limited to football only or does it apply to all athletic scholarships?

my calculator does not arrive at these figures if it is for football and monthly stipends.

  88. mikey October 27, 2011 11:13 am

We don’t need to be in MWC to play UNLV

We’re already scheduled to play UNLV till 2018-2019

And was on schedule to play them without Travel Subsidy.

    Not Now!

  89. Kevin October 27, 2011 11:16 am

Returning to the WAC for non-football sports doesn’t do any favors and only hurts them financially and competitively.

  90. Buffoman October 27, 2011 11:20 am

Just staying with my thought and adding a few extras. People may say well that’s a weak conference anyway so why should they even be given consideration for any recognition. If the WAC is the weak sister but our best financial option, and we’d like to be considered at some point, I believe that it is very doable.

We need to build toward that goal. How you ask? We need to start playing “bodybag games” even if it is an away game and we’ll only get to see it on television. One, we’ll get paid, two it’ll balance a weak sister conference schedule. Three and here’s the hard part, we now have to start being competitve andstart winning to gain legitimacy.

If in a 13 game schedule we win out in the conference and win two body bag games, even at 8-5 with two big wins, people will start to notice. So we may upgrade our recruiting effort as kids will see we play had and compete and even win, on national television. May be the following year we are 9-4, with three wins. There may be a low ranking, but people will notice.

My point is if we just keep wishing and not accepting what is and start changing that, we’ll always be one step behind. You can’t continuously do that and expect different results. There has to be clear goals, tough ones and all have to strive to make that happen.

Hey? Didn’t BSU do that a fews years ago when they were not even at the dance (D-1)?

  91. mikey October 27, 2011 11:20 am

The Best deal was for Boise, Fresno and Reno move to MWC.

Now they get paid coming to Hawaii.

But Hawaii has to to pay their own way to play them?

    What a deal.

  92. Buffoman October 27, 2011 11:23 am

90 is the television deal that much better? As I understand it we loose two sources of revenue (well one is a new expense): There is no PPV revenue in the MWC contratc and we pay travel subsidies. I know, the WAC is not getting a sweet ESPN deal, but is the MWC deal that much better? Just asking as I don’t know the numbers.

  93. ai-eee-soos October 27, 2011 11:25 am

    re # 72, 85 ,86, 89; and OTHERS who have posted previously.

Essentially agreeing to go / stay in the WAC for football only; no travel subsidy.

No need for Reno or Fresnecks to come back – let ’em go.

There is “enough” football for us in the WAC. The WAC will “grow”.

We are NOT BCS; no sense trying to be one, just to satify the “wannabes”.

Play our football at “our” level. We are who we are.

Our other sports are “safely” placed close to home.

    I repeat – we AIN’T BCS.

  94. Kevin October 27, 2011 11:26 am

The stipend increase would include all student-athletes on scholarship.

  95. mikey October 27, 2011 11:26 am

I sure don’t think Hawaii would attract any new fans base playing MWC opponents.

Would they make more money in MWC?

I doubt MWC teams have any fan base coming to Hawaii like Hawaii Fans!

Plus with PPV in question where is the deal?

    That’s why BYU left MWC.

Exactly!!! We not the best looking in the room, none of the good looking like dance, so let’s accept that and enjoy the party.

We not BCS material. That hurt but the truth usually does. Okay, now we know, do something about “prettying up” but no jes wish and get mad because nobody asking you for dance.

  98. rainbowfan October 27, 2011 11:38 am

    UH resident tuition increased 455.5% from $1512 for 1999-2000 to $8400 in 2011-12 and will increase 652.38 % from 1999-2000 to $ 11,376 in 2016-17 ( or 35.4 % from 2011-12).

Non-resident tuition is 2 -3 times more than for residents.

  100. Derek October 27, 2011 11:59 am

Pomai, that’s a nice analogy. But, I would venture that of the 30,000+ millionaires at least 80% or more of them did not graduate from the University of Hawaii so fat chance of getting anyone of them to donate to UH athletics. But we can still dream.

Heck, I’m just waiting for these millionaires to pay their fair share of taxes.

The graduation rates posted from 2001-2004 is moot. What is important is now. We knew it was pretty low then, but I’m certain that right now it’s much, much better.

What unbeaten teams this week will lose? I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kansas St., Oklahoma St. or Clemson lose. Alabama, LSU, and Boise St. are off. Houston playing tonight should win at home against Rice. I like Stanford to beat USC on Saturday, even though the game is in LA. K-St. hosts Oklahomam, Ok. St. is at home against Baylor who can score a lot of points and Justin Blackmon is injured and is questionable. Clemson takes on Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson in Atlanta.

UH can win this Saturday IF: “WE TAKE CARE OF THE BALL”. End of discussion. In every game this year, the difference between winning and losing is how we play. When we lose, we implode. We are our own worst enemy. All we have to do is look in the mirror and you’ll find the answers. I think the coaches and the players just need to relax and just play instinctively and do their assignments. Nothing more, nothing less. If they are coached the right way and the players practiced well there shouldn’t be any excuses. You can’t say that any of the 7 teams we’ve played so far were better than us “on paper.” Against UH, we were right there. One of two plays probably made the difference. UNLV & San Jose St.? Come on, now! That’s what’s frustrating. We did not play to our potential.

Hmmm…who like be the one to tell Rockne?

…and who like go ask him for Kokua next time?

  107. HawaiiMongoose October 27, 2011 12:20 pm

If Boise State and Air Force do leave the MWC for the Big East, all eight remaining MWC members could rejoin the WAC in order to free themselves from the awful MWC TV contract. Throw in, say, North Texas as a 16th football-playing member and you’d have a nice, competitive, geographically sensible football conference:

    WAC WEST

    Hawaii (football only)

    San Jose State

    Fresno State

    San Diego State

    Nevada

    UNLV

    Idaho

    Utah State

    WAC EAST

    Wyoming

    Colorado State

    New Mexico

    New Mexico State

    North Texas

    Texas State

    UTSA

    Louisiana Tech

Hawaii would only have to play a single crossover game against the East division each year. Since the crossover game would alternate between home and away, that would equate to only one trip east of the Rockies every other year.

To me this is more sensible than being in a MWC-CUSA alliance stretching all the way to North Carolina and Florida.

I would hope someone already did on both your suggestions. Mr. Freitas did the right thing at that right time and all of us applauded him for that effort. That was then, the landscape now is not what Mr. Freitas bargined for and I would assume that the way UH is being treated at this point, he too may be a bit upset with what has transpire since.

He is an astute businessman and knows when a deal that was originally set with great intentions has gone south. As such, he would not stick with a bad deal, if this is indeed one that has gone south for the UH. If it has, why would we not ask him to help again? It is by no means a slap to what he did as it was indeed correct at the time. I don’t think anyone anticipated the shuffle that has since occurred to change the landscape as drastically as it may turn out to be.

If he is indeed one that is there to help the UH further it’s place in athletics, which he has done time and again, very quietly and very effectively, I could not see why he would not help again.

Who would ask? I believe that JD would if all signs pointed to a drastically altered MWC landscape that now hurts more than promoted the UH’s position. Like any business, he’d have to go prepared with hard facts and not blog talk as we are only speculators.

  114. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 12:47 pm

Cross over game should always be played in Hawaii. 1 game in 8 years is not asking much. Hawaii gives any conference a little publicity on the national scale. Otherwise, if they would alternate the home & away the cross over game, our opponents would come to Hawaii every 16 years. I think their recruiting would be better if they come here more often. Hawaii could offer to pay travel from the west coast only in the cross over game. On that matter, maybe we should have offered the MWC west coast transportation only.

  115. Garret October 27, 2011 12:47 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

I’ve posted notes in the past 2-3 blogs here about how it might be best for UH to stay in the WAC…but your plan is far superior to that. Getting the MWC out of their TV contract would be a huge win!

More importantly, ESPN has shown that they will renegotiate the WAC TV contract based on membership…it went down after BSU left and will go down further after UH/Nev/Fresno leaves, so conversely the TV contract can go up if the WAC has more attractive teams and markets.

I don’t know if North Texas would need to be added or if some teams (UTSA for example) might leave for CUSA since they will need members. Trying to add other schools (especially ones like North Texas that repeatedly have said no) to get to 16 schools might not be advisable if the WAC/MWC combo might end up with 12 or 14 schools anyway.

Trouble is, it would take a visionary leader to get this done and I don’t think Karl Benson is up to the job. There is also the issue of the non-football members of the WAC that will complicate the nonrevenue sports scheduling.

  116. Garret October 27, 2011 12:50 pm

When Mr. Freitas started trying to get UH into the MWC, I believe BYU, Utah, and TCU were MWC members and everyone knew that BSU was planning to join them. The MWC isn’t the same if you take away BYU, Utah, TCU, BSU, and Air Force.

  117. Garret October 27, 2011 12:52 pm

There appears to be a simple reason why the Big 12 picked West Virginia over Louisville–ESPN and Fox told them that West Virginia brought in better TV ratings. It will be interesting to see if political lobbying can trump TV $$$.

Multiple league sources have said that Big 12 television partners favor West Virginia as the league’s 10th team if Missouri departs because it offers higher television ratings for football than Louisville and would allow the league to maximize the value of existing TV contracts once Missouri and Texas A&M leave the league.

It remains unclear whether the split opinion will be enough to quash West Virginia’s bid to become a Big 12 member. One Big 12 source said today that the Louisville pushback represents nothing more than “a little slowdown” in the process because the TV partners favor West Virginia.

  120. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 12:58 pm

Remember the days when we had only 3 road games? Everybody wanted to come to Hawaii. After the schools that came started to lose, then they would make all kinds of excuses. That was also when we would put a lot of fans in the stands too. It was almost a weekly ritual. Now when they come, they would arrive on a Friday and leave on the Saturday after the game. Too bad for their student athletes that they cannot see Hawaii in its beauty and unique culture and enjoy it for at least a few days. JD was on some of those teams. Gotta try to get more home games.

  121. Kapahulu October 27, 2011 12:59 pm

UHAD called in to the Sports Animals (ESPN radio 1420am)yesterday afternoon about the stipend.

It would apply to all athletes.

UH currently has about 260 athletes.

It is supposed to more accurately cover the athletes expenses such as Laundry, Cell Phones, etc.

The $2000 amount is the maximim.

For some schools it may be less, such as around $1700.

It is up to each Conference if they want the new stipend.

For UH, the cost would be about $500,000.

  122. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 1:07 pm

Kevin, I don’t think anybody wants UH to drop the Big West. Being in the BW in the non-football sports is a great thing for UH. I think most of us, if not all of us, are just talking about the football team. I personally wouldn’t want all sports to go back to the WAC, just maybe football. All of us on the blog, apparently, can’t know ALL the facts about UH playing football in the MWC. Otherwise, the people that I trust, wouldn’t have made that kind of deal with the MWC. I’m sure they thought of the travel expenses and how to cope with it, before they agreed with the MWC. Since things changed…………..

  123. Kevin October 27, 2011 1:08 pm

The bar has been raised again.

UH needs to jump on this stipend bandwagon to remain competitive in recruiting across the board.

Unfortunately, will the MWC and BWC comply??

  124. Buffoman October 27, 2011 1:09 pm

    Kapahulu…Yikes!

Quick, tell Benson only joking, we staying and no stipends, right?

Not about BCS or AQ or whatever alphabets and ranking. All about expenses and keeping UH athletics from bleeding to death. Dead is no more, weak conference and a savings, we still playing. Pau.

  125. Kevin October 27, 2011 1:10 pm

    papajoe2,

Agreed it seemed some wanted EVERYTHING in the WAC again citing the pricipal of paying others to play as a slap in the face.

With that being said people will come to enjoy the competitiveness of the BWC in baseball, softball and women’s volleyball.

Not too sure what to make of the competition in mens and womens hoops, but still the BWC is a fate BETTER than the WAC in non-football.

  126. Kapahulu October 27, 2011 1:14 pm

At one time there was talk about reducing the amount of Scholarships in Football from 85 to around 80 or so to help with the added stipend expense. Not sure if it passed.

  127. Buffoman October 27, 2011 1:17 pm

I hope that was not referencing my comments. Mine was only as it pertained to the MWC. If that was misunderstood by some, my apologies for not also stating that BWC was a separate issue. My beef is with Mr. Thompson’s MWC.

  128. A-House October 27, 2011 1:19 pm

I will echo those who believe it is truly in the best interest for UH to stay in the WAC for football only. What was then is not now if the “upper crust” teams leave the MWC. Wonder how C. Thompson feels now that they who he counted on to stay are pulling up stakes!

Finances would be the “engine” that drives this train – no travel subsidies for football, keep PPV $$$, seek to have ESPN look real hard at the next WAC TV contract. Will ESPN increase the MWC deal if cream on top leaves? me no tink so! WAC members would be happy to not travel to Hawaii for all other sports which would save them $$$. I would leave Reno out as they have NO desire to play in Hawaii again. Unlike, Fresno, under Pat Hill, loves the competition UH provides to them. If Fresno stays in the MWC, schedule it as a out-of-conference game to begin or end the season. Same can be said of BYU.

Must support Garret’s position that Benson should not be the leader of the WAC conference if UH decides to stay. Pick a younger “up ‘n coming” assistant conference commish with vision to lead the new WAC. Does Benson have a “buy-out” clause? When does his current contract end?

Stay in the BWC for all other sports – better competition overall – less expensive for UH on any travel subsidies – etc.

Is there a “template” for entry into the PAC 12 that UH can look at as a “goal”?

Let the “secret” meetings/conversations begin! Who will be UH’s point person(s)? I like JD and R Freitas.

  129. Bowwar October 27, 2011 1:28 pm

I hope somewhere on the Upper Campus, there is a “war room” where JD, Freitas, and whomever necessary are monitoring the activities going on amongst conference affiliations and gaging their options…Hopefully, we haven’t burned any bridges, but it appears that we may want exercise our options for “football only” in either the WAC, MWC, or ???? Staying in the BWC is a “no-brainer” except possibly for mens basketball…

I just hope UH is not “sleeping at the wheel” again, as it normally does or it may as well just “bend over and smile” when the dust clears…

  130. Kevin October 27, 2011 1:31 pm

22 guys on the field offense and defense then two or three deep with some part of special team units (another 44) still not close to 80.

If the process to move to the MWC and BWC was any indication, then odds MAY be in favor of UH brass monitoring these new changes and potential outcomes as well.

I think we were all pleasantly surprised by the announcement mid November of 2010 when the general mass feeling at the time was we’d lay down and accept staying in the WAC.

  132. Kevin October 27, 2011 1:38 pm

Speaking of, was anyone else smiling and nodding when then BOR member Howard Carr publically and openly challenged all 19 UH head coaches to step up their game during the press conference on Dec 10th???

I think December 10, 2010 serves as a great day for UH athletics.

Amid the red tape of a state institution, it was evidence that when priority and urgency are addressed, actions CAN be taken.

Consistency though… remains to be seen.

The heck with it already, do away with all conferences and make one conference with four divisions, north, south, east and west. Each with a conference championship and then a four team playoff for the national champ.

  137. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 2:05 pm

#108, Hawaiian Mongoose, I like that idea. Maybe the MWC teams would be interested because they still would have a schedule that plays closer to their home region and gets more tv money along with their own ppv. Benson in the lead? I don’t know how that could be done. Just hoping. Is the merger already a done deal between the MWC and CUSA?

  138. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 2:09 pm

#137 Pomai, That’s a sensible solution but with our history with the NCAA, where will we be placed? Maybe the deep south or even mideast.

  139. masatoshi-san October 27, 2011 2:11 pm

Any one see a resemblance between this year’s Hawaii team and this year’s Notre Dame squad? More specifically how both teams have suffered their losses as a result of self inflicted errors and turnovers?

  140. Derek October 27, 2011 2:11 pm

We are where we are, in the Mountain West for football. It’s better than the WAC. People will move for their own self interest. If you ask me, the Big East in football is on the brink of disaster and they might be left as a basketball conference. Pittsburgh is gone, as well as Syracuse. West Virginia wants to get out, so does Louisville. What’s left is Cincinnati, Rutgers, South Florida, and UConn. They might as well join Conference USA and join the merger with Conf USA and MWC. I can envision that all the major conference will go to 14 or een 16 teams. If you get 5 major conferences of 16 teams plus 22 for the MWC and Conf USA that accounts for 102 teams right there. There are only 120 teams in Division IA football (FBS). The 6 major conferences would be the following:

    1) SEC -16

    2) Midwest (formerly Big 10) – 16

    3) Southwest (formerly Big 12) – 16

    4) Pac 16 (formerly Pac 12 -16

    5) Coastal (formerly ACC) – 22

If the Big East has 16 teams too, that would be 7 major conference so that would make it

112 teams. The rest would be leftover independents: i.e. BYU, Notre Dame, Army, Navy, maybe La Tech, some Sunbelt conf. teams. The possibilities are endless.

    6) USA (formerly MWC and Conf USA)

Problem, too, is that most of those so called 30,000 millionaires in Hawaii are sitting on property that represents their status and have mortgages that absorb most of their monthly income. Few are debt free, if any.

BOR kind of have their hands tied behind their backs and often seem to work blindfolded. It seems they can only disburse what is there and apparently have little room to generate revenues and gifts. I have a son like that. He can’t run anything… grrrrrr, much less keep his room and bathroom clean and tidy. But in all fairness, the STATE has been cutting them very, very small pieces of funding and until that improves, tuition will keep escalating and Hawaii’s own will keep on suffering.

It sounds like the compromise might have been decided on to settle the Louisville/West Virginia battle…both might get into the Big 12. The final spot could be the BYU (football)/Notre Dame (non-football) hybrid I’ve been reading about, but that will probably just end up as BYU since I can’t see Notre Dame doing it. By taking 2 Big East teams, the Big 12 might be trying to drive Notre Dame out of the Big East.

Orangebloods.com will have an update in the War Room tonight about how the Big 12 is shaping up to be an 11-team league.

Article about how by raiding the Big East, the Big 12 may get Notre Dame’s non-football teams and a football scheduling agreement.

Notre Dame covets its football independence. Everyone understands that. But to land its non-football sports in the Big 12, Notre Dame would have to contractually agree to play a certain number of nonconference football games against Big 12 opponents.

The fancy ribbon on top of that prize would be an annual Notre Dame-Texas game on Thanksgiving. That would be one way to thumb your nose at Texas A&M for bolting to the SEC — and it would generate a lot of TV revenue.

So, Houston, Boise State and Air Force may be ready to commit to the Big East, but how badly will the Big 12 damage the Big East before they commit? Or, is this opening up enough spots for a 6-team western division for the Big East?

A leading college official said Boise State and Air Force, two key pieces to the rebuilding plan, “are at the altar” with the Big East, characterizing the recent discussions as positive.

Meanwhile, Houston’s board of regents voted unanimously today to give chancellor and president Renu Khator authority to negotiate a contract to move the Cougars into a more lucrative league, with eyes on the Big East.

  164. Garret October 27, 2011 4:30 pm

    Matt,

Good point, UH would therefore be in violation of Title IX. The NCAA didn’t consider the unique cases of split conferences…UH could be in huge trouble with this.

  165. madeinhawaii October 27, 2011 4:30 pm

    Matt,

Good question.. LOL… what about the MPSF?

  166. Garret October 27, 2011 4:34 pm

If the Big East loses 2 teams to the Big 12, they could end up with a real western division. They could have 1 spot left.

    Houston

    SMU

    Boise State

    Air Force

    Cincy

    BYU?

San Diego State (they already applied)?

  167. Garret October 27, 2011 4:41 pm

The MPSF would give the stipend since all the Pac-12 and MWC schools will give the stipend. That will force the Big West schools to get their conference to give the stipend or drop out of the MPSF.

    UNLV

    BYU (Gone)

    Utah (Gone)

    TCU (Gone)

    Boise State (Will probably go)

    Air Force (Will probably go)

Fresno State (Should stay in WAC)

    Nevada (Should stay in WAC)

The MWC will not be the same conference next year as the one that UH thought that they were joining. That in itself should be grounds for disolving any commitment that was made to join the MWC. Chances are a court will agree with that contention. The conference will be much weaker and that much less in demand for TV rights with the high profile schools gone. I wonder if the agreement that UH entered into calls includes a penalty fee if UH decides against entering the MWC. TCU has to pay a $5 million dollar fee to the Big East even if they did not play a single game since they instead will be entering the Big 12. But again, this could be a matter for the courts for the reason stated above.

With the high profile teams moving on, a re-assessment should be made on the value of joining the MWC. On the surface at least, it sure does not seem to make financial sense to join the MWC. Garret, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the Big East makes more money from basketball than from football. That’s taking into account both TV money and NCAA basketball tournament credits.

That lucrative basketball income is now in danger of being seriously diminished. The Big East has lost two great basketball programs in Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC. It may lose two more great basketball programs in WVU and Louisville to the Big 12.

If that happens, the focus of the non-football schools that make Big East expansion decisions could shift from preserving Big East football to preserving Big East basketball revenue. They could decide to build back up from 12 members to 16 members by adding non-football schools that have strong basketball like Butler, Xavier, St. Louis and Dayton, rather than football schools that have weak basketball like Houston, SMU, UCF and ECU.

In that event there would be no need for the Big East to issue football-only invitations to Boise State, Air Force, or any other western schools.

  185. Stephen Tsai October 27, 2011 5:40 pm

    Question: What exactly is gender-equity?

Is it equal opportunity to compete?

Or is it that everything has to be equal?

For instance, the television coverage of men’s and women’s basketball isn’t equal.

I remember a long time ago, when Milo Griffith (sp) was the Wahine head coach, and each player received one paper cup per practice. So, yes, back then, things weren’t equal.

But if the MWC pays stipends and Big West doesn’t, is that a gender-equity problem, considering that men’s basketball also won’t get stipends?

  186. papajoe2 October 27, 2011 5:45 pm

Houston QB throws for 9 touchdowns. Shatters td record. I think Colt was 2nd or 3rd before today.

  187. Stephen Tsai October 27, 2011 5:50 pm

UH can’t get upset about paying travel subsidies because that was the only way it was getting into the MWC and Big West. UH had been passed over so many times, it got the hint that travel was a big issue.

UH has enjoyed many benefits over the years — pay-per-view, the Hawaii exemption, the Hawaii Bowl guarantee.

The reality is, when you’re 2,400 miles away from the nearest opponent, you don’t have much leverage.

Now I like JD. He’s a smart guy, and a good guy. But I also think his money woes aren’t really our woes. For instance, ad sales probably are down for ESPN 1420. Are we holding telethons? No, we just care whether the games will be aired. Same thing with the zoo. You pay the fee, you see the animals. You don’t really care about the price of peanuts for elephants.

UH has always had money woes. But unless they turn off the lights during timeouts to save money, it doesn’t bother me. There are a lot of people who are paid a lot of money to solve these problems.

    😯 That’s a DAMN good question!!!

If the MWC adopts it, UH football student-athletes will HAVE to get the stipend.

BWC schools aren’t exactly in the financial position to jump up and say “YES” to the proposed stipend so if I were to guess, don’t be surprised if they kick and scream NO.

There MIGHT be precedence for some kind of exemption perhaps due to our split deal, where if one of our conferences says yes, then it’s that way across the board…

BUT then UH would have a little something over the rest of the BWC programs if the BWC doesn’t approve of the stipend and I am sure that won’t fly with BWC folk too well.

  189. Kevin October 27, 2011 6:01 pm

    Matt,

Good point, UH would therefore be in violation of Title IX. The NCAA didn’t consider the unique cases of split conferences…UH could be in huge trouble with this.

Well, logically it ain’t UH’s fault if the BWC doesn’t want to pick up the stipend deal.

I’d like to see the litigation if that scenario plays out.

If I were UH, I’d throw the BWC under the bus on that one after setting them on fire.

  190. Kevin October 27, 2011 6:08 pm

Nah, I take that back, I wouldn’t throw BWC under the bus, but still UH would be in violation of Title IX thru NO fault of their own.

  191. jm2375 October 27, 2011 6:16 pm

Kevin – don’t throw the Big West under the bus. I can see their reasoning for the travel subsidy. Currently, their teams can travel by bus and don’t have to leave the state of California. The MWC, on the other hand, for football, …

Is the stipend also for non-FBS schools? What about the basketball Big East schools, like Georgetown, Marquette, etc. Georgetown is Div I(A) except in football where it is FCS. So, do the football players get a stipend or not?

  192. Kevin October 27, 2011 6:18 pm

    JM,

I know, but push come to shove… it’s a case of UH getting boned in a serious situation that is not their fault.

Maybe the BWC will adopt after all?

  193. Kevin October 27, 2011 6:21 pm

Well if push comes to shove (AGAIN), if the BWC doesn’t adopt and the MWC does, then UH will just HAVE to go on their own and carry on the stipend to the rest of their 18, soon to be 19 other sports to remain in compliance.

If the other BWC teams get all huffy, oh well…

  203. Garret October 27, 2011 7:02 pm

    Kevin,

According to the new NCAA rule, *no* school can give stipends if the conference they are in does not. UH cannot give stipends to its non-football teams unless the Big West, MPSF, etc. all do so.

The NCAA actually has a solution for schools in split conferences–go indy or put all of your teams in conferences that follow the same stipend policy.

The Big West might actually want to give the stipends in order to level the recruiting field for soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc. Long Beach State gives 112 scholarships, so the stipend rule would cost them $224k…less than 2% of their budget. I didn’t check the rest of the Big West, but I’m guessing they are in similar situations.

  204. Garret October 27, 2011 7:10 pm

Garret, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the Big East makes more money from basketball than from football. That’s taking into account both TV money and NCAA basketball tournament credits.

    HawaiiMongoose,

That was the case under the existing contract. However, the Big East has been negotiating their next TV contract for a year already and they found out how much bigger the TV money is now for football. I remember reading Big East basketball coaches themselves commenting on how the TV revenue is something like 75% for football…so, football will make far more money than basketball when they had just half of the teams!

When the Big East met with SMU, some of the numbers got out (enough people heard the same numbers that I’m guessing there is some truth to it). It appears that the TV numbers for football-only schools will be very good, but of course the all-sports number will be better.

The other thing to look at is if the Big East decides to end football, they lose a LOT of prestige and that could diminish their basketball TV contract. The football bowl money the Big East makes is more than their NCAA basketball money, even though football has 1/2 the teams. Some schools in the Big East could decide to jump to a different conference instead of give up football or go indy for football. It would also be difficult for the Big East to get some basketball schools (like Memphis) if they cannot offer a spot for that school’s football team.

  205. Garret October 27, 2011 7:13 pm

Every partial scholarship is calculated to the decimal place for its fraction of a scholarship. That same percentage will be multiplied by $2k. One of the best parts of the stipend will be that partial scholarships will cover a little more now…maybe they can afford books and a sheet of paper now.

  206. Garret October 27, 2011 7:22 pm

UH shouldn’t be upset–travel subsidies were a good business decision then and a good decision now may be to remain in the WAC for football. The conference that passed UH over so many times is no longer the same conference.

Without PPV and the Hawaii Exemption, UH probably wouldn’t be playing football anymore. UH simply couldn’t afford it.

To continue with your analogy, zoos close. Schools close. Libraries close. Several *colleges* are being closed in the state of Texas. Colleges are cutting sports teams.

With tens of millions of dollars that Upper Campus is losing from research grants, and the uku millions that the Legislature will cut from UH, UHAD is not safe. If UHAD loses $2.5 mil from PPV, pays over $1 mil for travel subsidies, and pays $500k extra for the stipend, that is a lot for UHAD to absorb.

UH cannot drop down to D-IAA because no D-IAA conference could afford to have all of their football teams travel to Hawaii, plus UH couldn’t get enough revenue to afford the nonrevenue sports required by Title IX. So, if enough money is lost then UH will have to drop football completely. That is the bottom line that I worry about.

  207. Haleakala October 27, 2011 7:37 pm

    Garret:

Hopefully UH is doing a financial analysis of how the MWC football conference alignment will affect the bottom line. If UH goes into the MWC, then add up projected revenues due to gate receipts, PPV and conference TV, minus operational expenses including travel subsidies. Need to do the same with the scenario that has UH football staying in the WAC and then compare the bottom line for both scenarios. We may as well do that exercise now before we all get surprised later. It will be too late to do it later only to find out that the chosen option was unaffordable.

  208. Garret October 27, 2011 7:43 pm

UCF is sure happy about joining the Big East. UCF won the CUSA last year and had a top 25 finish in the BCS standings…that top 25 finish is a big boost for the Big East.

If I’m Big East Commissioner John Marinatto, I wouldn’t wait for Louisville and West Virginia to leave; I’d boot ’em out right now and spin it like this: “We’re getting rid of this riffraff so we can add better teams from bigger markets.”

Seriously, a case could be made that the Big East is adding football teams (UCF, Boise State, Houston, SMU, etc.) that are not only better right now than the defectors but with more future potential as well. Two of the expected new members are No. 5-ranked Boise State and No. 18-ranked Houston, both undefeated and ranked higher than any of the departing teams. In fact, the proposed future Big East has three teams ranked in the top 25 — one more than the current Big East.

ST ~ Mahalo for the pictures from Idaho! Good to see that we’ll have a fan, Ty Austin, and his family in the stands rooting for the Warriors. Sweet picture of Moniz with the young fan.

Here’s to a healthy team, and the preparation and fight to win. GO WARRIORS!!!

  210. Eric October 27, 2011 7:44 pm

#188 ST – ad sales can’t be down at ESPN-1420. Punahou just hired their sales manager as head baseball coach and a sales exec got hired as the pitching coach. If sales were down, why would they let 2 salespeople leave their jobs at 2pm everyday ……….or maybe it is down and they don’t care!?!?!?!

  211. Garret October 27, 2011 7:47 pm

    Haleakala,

I’m sure that JD and his office are crunching the numbers. The bottom of the MWC isn’t that much more appealing than the WAC. UNLV is one of the more appealing teams, but UH already plays UNLV…but if it is a conference game, UH will have to subsidize UNLV’s travel. Same team at Aloha Stadium, more expense for UH.

San Diego State, Fresno, and Nevada are all probably more appealing than the WAC leftovers. If they won’t go to the WAC, then UH would be selling less tickets for 1 or 2 home games per year.

  212. Haleakala October 27, 2011 7:53 pm

    Garret:

There may be more than two scenarios with different teams in the future WAC and the future MWC. JD will have to shine his crystal ball to be able to get the most probable scenarios to make his projections.

  213. Buffoman October 27, 2011 8:08 pm

There are a ton of times when Garret and I disagree. But on this issue of MWC or staying/going back to the WAC, we appear to agree based on the simple fact that the MWC we agreed to join and pay subsidies to other to travel to Hawaii, are no longer in the mix and if we have to pay these same subsidies to lower tiered schools that does not enhance the MWC, it does not make financial sense to continue down the path to change dance partners.

I don’t believe we would argue with paying to have TCU, BYU, BSU come and play in our islands. What may appear to be left in the MWC does not rise to the same level as those listed or the UH. I know that this is a terrible example and I apologize in advance but this situation is like going to the “mustang Ranch” paying for the beautiful “companion” and out walks the unattractive kitchen wench. You’re paying for something you thought you were getting and got something much less attractive.

  214. Haleakala October 27, 2011 8:13 pm

    Buffo:

i agree. It sure appears that we are getting the kitchen wench. It may be time to say, “I want my money back”.

  215. kev-1 October 27, 2011 8:32 pm

To whom ever posted as kev-1 NOT earlier today . . . I hope you see this because it is important. My comments this morning about Wendall Say were based on what was posted in the breaking news section of the SA website LAST NIGHT. I did not read the article from today until just NOW. Now that I have had a chance to read it, I see why you told me to read closer. You have my sincerest apology.

I never post from a mean place. I am interested in things and like to read others and share my opinions. In this case, I commented with premature information. My comment on Say was initially in jest, saying that while we sometimes want to crack people, we can’t do it and he is in a position to be careful to avoid those types of situations. Again, that was before I read the article with his statement.

So, my apology to Coach Say for premature judgement and to the kev-1NOT for my being sassy.

  216. kev-1 October 27, 2011 8:37 pm

Colt Brennan’s TD pass numbers are far more impressive, as he threw 131 TDs in 3 years. Keenum broke the record and tossed 139, but in 5 years. Imagine if Brennan had another year.

Regardless, congrats to Keenum for the accomplishment.

God Bless Jim Donovan and all those who are keeping the UH Athletic Program alive.

    GO JIM!

    GO WARRIORS!

  218. Ipu Man October 27, 2011 9:07 pm

    #137 Pomai said it best:

“The heck with it already, do away with all conferences and make one conference with four divisions, north, south, east and west. Each with a conference championship and then a four team playoff for the national champ.”

Pomai, you cut to the meat of all these deals.

I think that is what will happen when all the dust and lawsuits

    settle…

  219. al October 27, 2011 10:56 pm

  226. wafan October 28, 2011 2:28 am

Kinda worried Mr. Tsai is using whips, and that al is the source.

  227. Garret October 28, 2011 2:33 am

It is good to know that JD is in favor of the $2k stipend. I am not surprised at that since it is a manageable amount for UH and the alternative would be to fall far behind in recruiting.

  228. Garret October 28, 2011 2:34 am

In the conference realignment wars, I think that Craig Thompson has proven to be a step ahead of Karl Benson. What happens if the MWC invites Utah State and San Jose State as has been rumored for a long time? I believe both of them would say yes, as both of them have been wanting to get into the MWC for years (just like UH).

In that scenario, there would be no WAC for UH to go back to.

  229. wafan October 28, 2011 2:34 am

Stadium “Authority” does not feel alcohol is the cause for fights at the stadium. I guess if you watch it from a distance and not the one not having beer thrown/spilled upon, or being kicked, punched, and pushed, by the drunkards . . . it is not a major problem.

Maybe the members need to get real and sit in those sections to get the full experience?

  230. wafan October 28, 2011 2:35 am

    Greetings, Garret!

  231. Garret October 28, 2011 2:54 am

The Big East is supposed to issue their invitations on Tuesday. Remember, once 1 team accepts the invitation, the Big East exit fee will go from $5 mil to $10 mil. Chip Brown is reporting that the Big 12 will meet on Monday to possibly invite both West Virginia and Louisville, saving both from the increased exit fee.

I reported at Orangebloods.com last night that B12 presidents will meet Monday to possibly admit both West Virginia and Louisville.

    http://twitter.com/#!/ChipBrownOB

  232. Garret October 28, 2011 2:57 am

Boise State will make their decision based on the TV $$$. The numbers the Idaho Statesmen are mentioning are slightly lower than what the SMU people seemed to hear from the Big East…maybe that is because of the extra school the Big East might lose?

Forget the geography jokes about Idaho being east of only the Pacific Ocean. This is, as most decisions in conference realignment have been, about money, largely television money.

All the Big East can do is show BSU projections and offer guesses — educated ones, but guesses ultimately — at what its new configuration will be worth to television networks. Can the Big East’s new television deal deliver $8 million or $10 million or $12 million annually to its football members? Or will the number be significantly lower for a league that adds BSU, Air Force and Navy as football-only members and Central Florida, Houston and SMU as full members?

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/10/28/1856361/broncos-decision-could-rest-on.html

  233. Garret October 28, 2011 3:01 am

Good morning wafan! I hope that your meetings today aren’t as bad as the other days this week.

One thing to consider about the Stadium Authority’s statements is that the vendor selling alcohol has a contract with the Stadium Authority. So, the Stadium Authority would have to pay them big bucks if they wanted to ban alcohol sales. The Stadium Authority cannot even get the maintenance money from the Governor that the Legislature approved, they cannot afford to break their alcohol contract.

I have a few more minutes to blog because my kids wake up.

  234. Garret October 28, 2011 3:12 am

Edit that last time–I have a few more minutes to blog because my kids will wake up soon.

The new blog should happen soon and the game is getting close so I won’t post anymore on the realignment stuff until Sunday. I think that Monday will be the SEC announcement of Missouri and the Big 12 announcement of Louisville and/or West Virginia, and Tuesday will be the day that the Big East either expands or quits football. But all of that can wait until after the game.

    Beat Idaho!

One thing I’d like to say is that often car insurance termination is a dreaded experience and if you are doing the appropriate things being a driver you simply won’t get one. Some people do have the notice that they’ve been officially dumped by the insurance company they then have to scramble to get supplemental insurance after having a cancellation. Low-cost auto insurance rates are usually hard to get after a cancellation. Having the main reasons with regard to auto insurance cancelling can help drivers prevent burning off one of the most vital privileges out there. Thanks for the suggestions shared through your blog.
