Saturday’s winner is …

Yes, our pal Avis Yasumura is indeed a weekend blogger, too. She has selected as the winner of two Sheraton Hawaii Bowl tickets … Made In Hawaii.

Congrats, Made In Hawaii. You know the routine: e-mail me at sstsai@hawaii.edu.

Thanks for playing. Thanks again to Avis.

The next time somebody laments how athletics get more things than other areas on campus, think about this:

For two weeks, starting Monday, UH’s campuses will be closed. (Everybody still gets paid, though.) But those deemed as “essential” employees still must work. Yep. Most of the folks in the athletic department — administrators, coaches, ticket master Walter Watanabe, etc. — will be working.

Just got back from Nevada’s practice. Its top running back, Vai Taua, did not earn enough credits during the fall semester to be eligible to play in the Sheraton Bowl. Their other top back, Luke Lippincott, had career-ending toe surgery.

    Jason will enjoy this article.

Despite a proclamation by ESPN’s Todd McShay that Locker would/should/could be the first overall pick, a league source tells us that Locker didn’t receive a first-round grade from the Advisory Committee.

The source concedes that Locker might have still be drafted in round one given the value of the position, but the source insists that McShay was flat wrong in his assessment of Locker.

“That’s the problem,” the source opined. “McShay is clueless. Up until three weeks before the 2008 draft, he said that [Kentucky’s] Andre Woodson would be a first-round pick. He went in the sixth and is out of the league.”

And the source explained that these opinions come not from the same-old rant by NFL scouts that guys like McShay and Mel Kiper have the luxury of popping off with no accountability as long as it all sounds good (the same-old rant has a significant amount of accuracy, by the way), but from concerns that guys like McShay do kids a disservice by pumping up their expectations.

Ah, those photos bring back memories of my own graduation. Hard to believe it’s only been seven months! Congratulations to all the graduates! Don’t get too bored during the ceremony–don’t forget that the SSC has Wi-Fi for its students! 😀

Garret: Haha, I remember that Andre Woodson thing. I had him right around where he got drafted, a 6th-7th rounder, and that he had to go to a team that could coach his mechanics up.

Mel Kiper isn’t actually that bad, but Todd McShay is the worst in the business, IMO. No, wait, the kid that they called “Mel Kiper, Jr., Jr.” is pretty bad too.

I’m glad Locker didn’t leave early, I wouldn’t draft him with a 1st rounder. He has the athletic ability, but still, I’d say 3rd rounder at this point. He’d be a guy I’d sit for a few years behind a veteran QB to learn the offense.

Alaska. It was a direct flight but they must have run the slolam route because we zig-zagged the entire way trying to find smoother air. I think their goal to was hit every bit of turbulance instead.

Today’s main sports article is about our Wahine.

Dave Shoji is quoted as saying “we are the 3rd best in the country”.

Um… I THINK THAT IS MORE THAN A FAIR ASSESSMENT!!! 😎

It’s a simple as breaking down the final four teams. Us, Minnesota, Texas, and then Penn State. Since the beginning of the season Penn State was a beast all alone and Texas proved to be just as “beastly”. In most sports the difference in dominance between the top 3 ranked teams are usually pretty close. Well, not in this case.

You have Penn State and Texas at 1 and 2, and then a considerable gap then whoever is 3rd. At one point I believe Florida was 3rd??? Then at one point Washington was 3rd. Then eventually we held onto the 3rd rank longer than anyone else this season.

By marching through two Big 10 teams in post season play there is no doubt that while Penn State is in the BIG 10, the same goes, no one comes close.

Again, I ask, who really thinks Minnesota could have beaten us??? 😆

In the end, there was Penn State and Texas and both are a cut above the rest.

Then there is the Rainbow Wahine.

Then a BIG gap and the rest… 😎

    T’was a wonderful season indeed!!!

AGAIN, THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL, BEAUTIFUL, INTELLIGENT, AND ATHLETIC RAINBOW WAHINE FOR REPRESTING DA 808 SO WELL!!!

Maybe if Kaepernick takes the game off, then SMU will have a chance.

Nevada is gonna make this Hawaii Bowl game look UGLY!!!

That’s ok, I’m sure June Jones will have his players playing “like they belong”.

Who’s Todd McShay and Mel Kiper? They don’t know any better than some others who are astute evaluations of talent. I mean, didn’t they give Jamarcus Russell a high grade to be a #1 pick in the NFL. And where is Russell now? And what about Leaf? I never thought Locker is a potential #1 pick. I don’t think he’s even a first round pick, maybe a late second. His accuracy is not good enough. McShay and Kiper, these guys make a living in assessing the NFL draft, but I don’t think they do as good a job as the scouts for the NFL teams. But I have to say that McShay and Kiper do a good job of talking. I’d like them to find players who are not well known who develop into very good players, guys like James Harrison from the Steelers. Did McShay and Kiper on their board. I don’t think so.

  72. I Love Pecan Pie December 19, 2009 1:14 pm

Announcer at New Mexico Bowl mentioned that
Fresno took Wisconsin to two overtimes before
losing. Boy, wish UH could have done that.

They also showed Fresno’s big blocking back, who
went down on a chop block (by the defense) when
he took off his helmet, and I think his neck was as
thick as his belly. Talk about a refridgerator.
Does Coach Mac have a fridge?

  73. I Love Pecan Pie December 19, 2009 1:27 pm

The New Mexico bowl announcers keep talking up
the weather and their upcoming trip there for the
Sheraton Bowl. Good adv for the state.
    If Sheraton ever dumps sponsorship,
maybe the “tourism board” could sponsor it…

  75. I Love Pecan Pie December 19, 2009 1:32 pm

They also mentioned how Fresno never beats Boise State. I wonder if the WAC or NCAA force Boise State to wear “white” uniforms when playing at home
on their silly blue grass. And can Hawaii switch colors for that game and come out in blue unis?
Then we too would be invisible…

  84. al December 19, 2009 2:10 pm

    charlie wade.

back in the day, when charlie was responsible for recruiting the rainbow wahine vb team.

i often wondered how he did it?

i often wondered how he was so successful recruiting the local girls?

now, i know why. ann miller in her season’s recap story today in the tiser quoted charlie and he said this about aneli cubi-otineru and her return to the hawaii team.

“I knew she wanted to play here in front of these fans,” said Wade, one of Cubi-Otineru’s biggest fans. “You look at her pedigree and you can tell family is a big part of her life. She’s one of those kids who really gets how important it is to come here and play in front of these fans if you live here. She recognizes that she does want to spend the rest of her life here, so to have her name and face out here at UH is really big, really valuable … it can get you in the door.”

    …charlie wade, tiser 12-18-09

i hope our football coaches uses this philosophy when approaching the local boy talents of hawaii nei. i hope they get it.

    …nuff said.

  85. uhwarriors December 19, 2009 2:17 pm

    al,

good post….hope all is well, been cooking turkey, stuffing, ahi poke, cranberries (fresh), more stuffing, and lots of GRAVY……..ryan heads to the east coast tomorrow to see his grandparents……so, had to cook his ‘last supper’, haha.

we won’t see him til next year, haha. everything else is going forward, the required paperwork is in process and we shall bring closure soon.

as with the RB at USC, the NCAA is a very fickle group and EVERYTHING has to go by the book……so baby steps are more advised, dot the i’s and cross the t’s…….

by the way, MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone…..may your hearts be filled with joy and peace during this season.

Keisha Kanekoa made Two Point Jumper!

    Hawaii, 60-52.

  133. Derek December 19, 2009 6:56 pm

I’m disappointed w/ Fresno St. I mean, when they can’t score a touchdown in 4 tries from the 1 or 2 yard line they don’t deserve to win. Again, I thought their play calling wasn’t good. They kept going right up the middle, when a simple mis-direction pitch to the outside would have easily scored. They also fumbled in the red zone to snuff another potential score. Clearly, I thought Fresno St. was the better team, but as they say by Dennis Green, “they let em off the hook.”

On another note, Penn State women’s volleyball team is the best. To be down 2-0 and come back to win is just incredible. They deserve all the kudos in being National Champs for the 3rd straight year. Next year, it’s Hawaii’s turn.

  134. d1島 December 19, 2009 6:58 pm

    62-53, 2:20 left.

I’ll be contacting Koa Anuenue right after the first of the year – had planned to do so on Monday but see above for why no can do – to see if it would be possible to set a special Tsai-ko fund for the SERVING UP 1000 Drive which would allow each donor to get a full tax deduction.

What I plan to suggest is that those of you who want to take part sign up with me and I’ll send you a coupon book. Every time you make a donation, you tear out the coupon, fill in the information on both the form submitted with your check or debit/credit card information and the coupon stub, and then mail the check & the form in to Koa `Anuenue. Each month, I’ll post a reminder or two about sending in the current payment.

Again, at $20 a month, 50 donors can raise $8,000 between January and the end of August. Some folks might write checks for even more money, but it would all go into the dedicated fund.

The big question would be if the Koa `Anuenue would be interested in working with such small donations even though the aggregate would be fairly substantial.

Will report back early in 2010 as to what the response is.

  140. d1島 December 19, 2009 7:25 pm

From Kevin Hashiro (I guess) in LV via FB:

UH pulls off the huge upset and beats Kansas State, 71-61. They maul the Wildcats on the boards and minimize the turnovers in the 2nd half as they rally from a 33-13 first half deficit. Wahine draw host UNLV, lead by Iolani alumnae Jamie Smith, in the semifinals tomorrow night.

  144. Garret December 19, 2009 7:45 pm

    WassupDoc,

It will be interesting if they want to deal with the $20 checks each month. I had assumed that foundations would want to deal in bigger increments, so I sent $100 to Na Koa a couple of months ago and plan to send $100 increments every so often. I could change that to $20 monthly (that would actually reduce my donation plan), or could I send in 5 coupons at once? I was surprised that such a significant amount of the Na Koa donation was not deductible as my donations to other causes never had that problem, so your setup might be better since all of the donation might be deductible.

The other thing is that I set aside a significant amount of founder’s stock in my company for UH. I didn’t donate it now because it is worth nothing (the stock price is a 1/100 of a penny) and it isn’t worth the time or money that I and UH would have to do for it, but if the stock is ever worth anything then the UH Athletic Department would benefit nicely.

Al already referred to this, but I figure I should post the article anyway.

Joshua Quezada announced Saturday that he will sign a scholarship agreement with BYU and enroll this coming January 15 after he takes his finals at La Habra High School.

Joshua Quezada is a 5-foot-11-inch, 205-pound running back prospect from La Habra, California. He had scholarship offers from Utah, Hawaii and Washington, but chose BYU for a lot of reasons, including the honor code.

“The honor code was a big plus in my mind,” said Quezada, who is not LDS. “BYU has the sort of atmosphere I want in a school and in a football program. They hold my same standards that I have personally and that was a big thing for me.”

By joining midyear, Quezada will aim to play right away. He’ll be taking his finals at La Habra High School January 13 and plans to enroll at BYU January 15 to cap off what has been a hectic recruiting process for him.

I’m up, just saw the score, great win for coach Dias and the Na Wahine. The Royal Purple is a good measuring stick for the Na Wahine in the WAC. The Cats have been very competitive in past seasons and with Sweat, they have one of the better players in the big 12. Whoever shut her down or however the team denied her the ball did an excellent job.
