Congrats

Congrats to the Rainbow Wahine softball team for winning the WAC regular-season title. Well deserved.

And also a “nice job” goes to our blog readers, namely Mei Ling, for organizing the “donation” stand at the game; all contributions go to the softball program. Mei Ling has been a dedicated volunteer for Na Koa the past year, and even though she had been away from the islands for a few decades, she has embraced UH athletics since her return.

As always, I had nothing to do with any of the good deeds the readers do. You guys are special people, and deserve credit for your kindness.

It was great to hear — shhh, I’m still in the Bay Area — that running back Chizzy Dimude had a big night in the Warrior Bowl.

It is known that Dimude is quick, a nice complement to No. 1 running back Alex Green. UH had tried to work him in as a slotback last year to get him more touches. But Dimude also is tough He played all of last season with a labrum tear in his left shoulder, an injury that required post-season surgery. He also has dealt with a groin injury this spring.

Rocky Savaiigaea practiced at nose tackle during yesterday first day of the San Francisco 49ers’ mini-camp in Santa Clara. Savaiigaea was a nose tackle under Jerry Glanville in 2005 and 2006, but has played defensive tackle ever since.

Aaron Kia is practicing at right guard for the 49ers. Kia and Savaiigaea did not have to go up against each other during yesterday’s drills.

Savaiigaea said Isa‘ako “Isaac” Sopoaga is the starting left end, and that recently signed Travis LaBoy has been working as a third-team defensive lineman. But Savaiigaea said LaBoy had a great practice yesterday.

Happy birthday to JM2375.

Tomorrow is the last day of The Honolulu Advertiser under Gannett, but several who have decided not to work for the transition company said their goodbyes yesterday. Too many to mention (let alone photograph), but great thanks to all. It really has been a privilege to have worked with so many great people.

third team, not a place to be, I hope Travis moves up quickly, because they eventually cut their final roster to 56 total players.

Congrats to the Wahine / SoftBows! Awesome performance. I like that they gave Michelle Moses her first defeat. Yes, I know they have 2 other formidable pitchers, but that first game had to have dampened their enthusiasm & gave them a lot of food for thought.

  28. Stephen Tsai May 1, 2010 6:07 am

    Re: Bracelets.
I’m not sure how the breakdown goes for each sport. For instance, the football team got rings for the 1992 Holiday Bowl, 2007 Sugar Bowl season and 2008 Hawaii Bowl But I think the 2007 and 2008 rings were part of the bowl-prize gifts they would have received, anyway.
The Wahine volleyball team, meanwhile, will get a ring for a national championship, not a WAC title.
I suspect the Rainbow Wahine softball team will receive rings if it reaches the College World Series.

  32. Annoddah Dave May 1, 2010 6:16 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

I enjoy baseball because it is a slow game and it fits my style. But the Wahine Softball game was so fast. Albeit, 7 innings and it goes like a flash. Was able to catch some of the Warrior scrimmage sitting on the top deck then walk over with the rest of the blog dogs to the field. It was neat to see the interest of UH events happening at the same time. Hopefully, the administration will see how much UH means to the people and plan events that capitalize on creating that fan friendly feeling throughout the year.

Blog dogs, Koakane suggested we crank up donations after every Wahine home run. We need some of you to help feed the till so that the rest of the crowd gets into it!

  33. d1島 May 1, 2010 6:16 am

    Bulla,

And she turned out a really good article about the Warrior Bowl!

  34. Bulla May 1, 2010 6:22 am

    d1

she did a great job, just her professional self 🙂 you wouldn’t believe who we were sitting next to at the Warrior Bowl………Leilehua HC, coach Tokuda…..memories……..light the corner of my mind………haha, all good. Lua and Ana were right there also.

we gots a looooooooong way to go before we walk under the lights at Aloha as UH Warriors………….obviously painful, but it’s a process.

a birdie told me that the O line was not ‘as ready’ as the D line, so LB’s were told not to blitz, and the D was told to just run a Base, with no blitzes from anyone……hmmmmmm

GO WAHINE………………..CONGRATS ON BEING DA WAC CHAMPS, NOW GO OUT AND WHACK’EM 🙂

  35. d1島 May 1, 2010 6:25 am

    Slugger/Annodah Dave,

That’s why I brought up the “Dollars for Doinks” idea. Actually got the idea from a guy I used to work with who played pro ball back in the day. In some minor league parks the custom was whenever you jacked one out, fans would walk down to the backstop and stick money in the fence and you’d come around and scoop up your reward after crossing the plate. He said it would often total to pretty good bonus for them.
Not necessarily just $1.00 bills but I’m sure there were denominations of all kinds….maybe call it “Bucks for Bashes”.
But anyway, it would certainly fit the “bill” for capitalizing on fan excitement/appreciation whenever someone goes yard!

  36. d1島 May 1, 2010 6:28 am

    Bulla,

AzOK…I’m sure nobody going run blitz packages against us anyway! 😈

Speaking of HS coaches…you heard, eh?

  37. d1島 May 1, 2010 6:30 am

Interesting posters late last night. 🙄

  38. Annoddah Dave May 1, 2010 6:31 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Sorry, forgot mention that it was d1 who also had the idea of “dollars for doinks” in the previous post. Koakane mentioned the idea of home run bucks after the game.

I guess we will need some signs with “$s 4 Doinks”, “Banger Bucks”, “Wham, Bam, Grand $lam”, etc.

  39. d1島 May 1, 2010 6:37 am

    Annoddah Dave,

Would need to get the players to “buy in” by running by the fence and picking up the $ (then probably dropping it all in a bucket in plain sight of all) to get all the fans “into” the idea.

  40. Bulla May 1, 2010 7:10 am

    d1
yep, got the 411 on that one……..interesting, how would you feel if you were 4th on the list, haha, oh well.

  42. Pomai May 1, 2010 7:21 am

    #28 wafan
Sorry to say that I have been told that they have no $$$$ for any kind of award for winning the WAC. So I guess we do it again, will be putting something together shortly an will post it here an also by email.

What I noticed last night was that before and during the game they (the girls) seem very relaxed and had their game face on, but when the last out came you could see in their faces a big sense of relief an when they announced that they had won the WAC they acted just like a bunch of girls, it was great to see the joy on their faces.

Passing—Shane Austin, 4-7-2-39; Brent Rausch, 11-17-0-92; David Graves, 4-7-0-46; Cayman Shutter, 8-12-1-61; Corey Neilsen, 4-7-0-36.

??? That is a lot of passes. I take it Austin didn’t have a great night.

  46. wafan May 1, 2010 7:42 am

    Pomai . . .

    Thanks for the heads up.

  47. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 1, 2010 7:47 am

    I second that Pomai!

All season long we’ve seen them on a pretty even level even when celebrating home runs. In retrospect this team has had a very “business-like” aura about them since February.

    But!

It was nice to see them really celebrate something last night.

    But!!!

Afterwards… They looked the same as they always did after every game.

Its scary how mentally stable this team appears to be.

  48. Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς May 1, 2010 7:53 am

Chee Huu, congrats to the Softball Girlies for whoopin that Fresno Puppy arse last night and for the rest of the series. Wish I could’ve been at the Warrior Bowl, but I heard good and bad things about it. Oh well hopefully the Coaches will go back to the film and correct the mistakes in the summer, then get ready for pound the Pasadena Pretty Boys! Glad to see Alex Green and Chizzy Dimude getting some shine on, hopefully they can be beasts in the backfield. I think most of our success will depend on the Lineman this year on both sides of the ball, so I hope the boys continue to work hard and take care each other to become a dominating force this year!!!

  50. Pauoa Boy May 1, 2010 8:00 am

  51. Bulla May 1, 2010 8:07 am

    PB

you’re absolutely on the money, and we’ve got some work to do….starting today…….a good question would be…..how many Warriors are training today, or did they take the day ‘off’ because they played a controlled scrimmage last night?

    hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, all about choices…………….

  52. Pomai May 1, 2010 8:12 am

Kazz I think the home run by Katie was celebrated with a little more enthusiasm then the others, I guess because she is playing in her last series at home.

  53. Kazz May 1, 2010 8:20 am

    Pomai,

Grimes looked a little more animated than she usually does, but hey… Here’s to hoping that wasn’t her last homer at home… Still get two games today yeah? 😎

  54. Maverick May 1, 2010 8:20 am

Having flashbacks to the 2006 season. The best running/passing balance yet.
Media will take notice once the warriors recapture this very important tactic for winning consistently.

  55. Kazz May 1, 2010 8:22 am

That homer by Grimes was kind of crazy too. It had some hang time on it and even the left and center fielders looked like they had chance on it, but you could see hope MELT away from their body language and by then Grimes was already rounding 3rd. 😆

  56. Pomai May 1, 2010 8:28 am

Kazz I think the best play for the whole game was #14 Alexandra Aguirre’s catch that robbed the bulldogs of a home run.

  57. whitey May 1, 2010 8:38 am

Happy Birthday jm2375!!!!! Enjoy your day!!!!

  58. Kazz May 1, 2010 8:42 am

    Pomai,

The outfield was awesome. Pu’u-Warren was solid, and yes Aguirre had the PLAY OF THE NIGHT, actually, as SICK as all the homers have been all year long, some defensive “gems” have been highlight worthy.

The backhanded/”fade-away” toss from Yoshikawa to Tauali’i in the SJSU series was AWESOME and most recently Aguirre’s home run stealing out last night was awesome.

  59. Bulla May 1, 2010 8:44 am

    kazz and pomai,

they showed that catch on the news…awesome concentration by the left fielder, feel for the fence, gauge yourself, and WHAPAH…..steal that homer 🙂

think it was KHON had the best angle on the homerun shots, because they were shots……..seeeeeeeeeeee yaaaaaaaaaaaaa….WHAPAH…..once again

good luck to the WAC champs, now go Whack’em 🙂 🙂

  60. A-House May 1, 2010 8:46 am

We add our congratulations to the 2010 WAC Softball champions — HAWAII.

    Re-UH’s teams senior nights

Nowhere in the country do other athletic programs show as much homage to their departing seniors on “Senior Night” as Hawaii does.

I’ve seen departing seniors covered with tons of leis, flowers and mostly smiles.

I’ve seen them run around the bases, take a last shot of the basketball or take a lap around the field. Or take a bow at court side.

The reputable sendoff is so captivating that visiting teams have at times asked permission to watch.

When the introductions are made of the departing seniors you see them accompanied by their parents, relatives, love ones and friends and you note the smiles and tears of joy merging together by all.

It’s a moment to treasure. It’s engraved in pictures and memories. And it finds a place in everyone’s heart.

Some parents and relatives of the departing seniors travel from far away distances in making this pilgrimage that it’s touching to see, also.

In addition to the senior night sendoff, I’m also seeing how the school’s athletic site makes a video sendoff of the seniors, too. Similarly with the school’s newspaper with a composite of each of the seniors.

Also the media, newspapers and blogs send the seniors off in style, too.

    Only in Hawaii.

Tonight it’s senior night for five of the members of the UH Wahine softball team. They’ll have the stage. The spotlight. The sendoff. And in the shadows, seemingly, will be the well wishers, including the coaches, administrators, relatives, friends and fans with a deep appreciation towards them for making this journey to Hawaii. And representing themselves, school, team and state very well. Best wishes and Aloha to the five, Katie Grimes, Tasha Pagdilao, Kanani Pu‘u-Warren, Amanda Tauali‘i, and Traci Yoshikawa.

Wie at -14 thru 10, one stroke ahead of Lincicome who just finished the 10th hole.

  69. Ralph May 1, 2010 9:51 am

If Wie holds her lead thru today, this tournament is winnable. In the past, she usually had a bad 2nd or 3rd round, followed by a sizzling finish in the 4th round.

  70. Ralph May 1, 2010 9:59 am

D1 we got to have 8 foot players to retrieve any money left in the fence surrounding the dugout and home plate. The design of the field is the pits, poor sightlines even after they made the correction by adding several feet of dirt to raise the entire field. And I’m sure they were 80% locally designed and the workforce was at least 80% local.

    Truly, thank you!

  86. Sam Owens May 1, 2010 11:22 am

    whew,

congrats to all including Michelle Wie, for anyone who has golfed, it is a challenge to say the least.

ralph, you really are Cliff from Cheers reincarnated…..that guy cracked me up just like you, he knew ‘everything’ and was unashamed to share that with everyone….. haha but you know so much….. from golf to softball stadiums….really impressive…..how many years did you coach collegiately? with your wealth of knowledge i am sure those institutions are all too grateful. your analytical abilities to the most minor detail would impress a NASA engineer….but hey, this is sports……

love your comments, makes me grateful to work for a delivery company with 3 letters, not too much i have to remember.

hope to see everyone at the Wahine game…..maybe a little red jacket and some little cymbals for Ralph by the collection point might bring in some BIG bucks………or DPK in a malo…….or Bulla in spandex…….or Ajoe in a thong……..or KK in speedos………ouch, now i wish i were blind………haha

  87. Kazz May 1, 2010 11:44 am

The Wahine will probably face FSU’s Morgan Melloh today at 4pm. Her ERA has sunk a bit but still deadly.

Me thinks Majam will join her senior teammates in some of the glory tonight. 😎

  88. Kazz May 1, 2010 11:53 am

I dunno… Michelle Wie is a pro and gets paid pro kala for being a pro. No need to defend Ms. Wie. You make all that money, get prepared to take in all kinds of comments good or bad.

I still wanna know what she did with that giant purple and white urn though.

I was a coach on several little league and basketball teams where parents and grandparents rewarded the player with $$$ for home runs or baskets.

Result in each case was a player who cared only for himself and disregarded any coach’s intructions on team play.

Hate to see the “chemistry” broken with the UH softball team.

    For our departing seniors tonight:

    “The Memory Will Never Die”
Written and performed by the band “Default”

    I whisper in your ear
The words you want to hear
You feel the wind and it reminds you
    It happens everytime
You stop and close your eyes
You can’t deny what lives inside you
Well I know it’s hard to see
    What is meant to be
When yesterday is so far behind you

Deep inside your soul knows I’m always there

You made me believe the day you surrender to me
    The memory will never die
    The love that you gave
    I’ll never throw it away
    The memory will never die

    The tides take a turn
    Another lesson learned
I’m right here but still you wonder
Would you say that you need more
And it’s not what it was before
It was before your on your own and going under

Deep inside your soul knows I’m always there

You made me believe the day you surrender to me
    The memory will never die
    The love that you gave
    I’ll never throw it away
    The memory will never die

    “Live To Win”
    by Paul Stanley

Frustrated, degraded, down before you’re done
Rejection, depression, can’t get what you want
You ask me how I make my way
You ask me everywhere and why
You hang on every word I say
But the truth sounds like a lie

LIVE TO WIN!!! ‘TILL YOU DIE!!! ‘TILL THE LIGHT DIES IN YOU EYES!!!
LIVE TO WIN!!! TAKE IT ALL!!! JUST KEEP FIGHTING UNTIL YOU FALL!!!

    Obsessive, compulsive, suffocate your mind
Confusion, delusions, kill your dreams in time
You ask me how I took the pain
Crawled up from my lowest low
Step by step and day by day
‘Till there’s one last breath to go

LIVE TO WIN!!! ‘TILL YOU DIE!!! ‘TILL THE LIGHT DIES IN YOU EYES!!!
LIVE TO WIN!!! TAKE IT ALL!!! JUST KEEP FIGHTING UNTIL YOU FALL!!!
Day by day, kickin’ all the way, I’m not cavin’ in!!!
Let another round begin, live to win!!!
    Live to win!!
    Live to win!!
    YEAH!!!
    LIVE!!!
    YEAH!!!
    WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not exactly eloquent, but hey, it’s the guy from “KISS” so what do you expect? 😆

i am honored to be able to jump from the shadows of those that lurk into the bright light of notoriety with the likes of yourself. you have always been to the point, on the point, in making a point but never to the point of being pointless….sort of like why is there a true north only, if that is the true north, what happened to the true south, or the 1/2 truth east/west….. see what i mean?

back to lurking, the boss is coming in the door…..(creeeeeaaakkkk slams shut)

Happy birthday, JM2375!!! Enjoy the dinnah! Thanks for sitting with us the whole game & walking the box around.

Thanks to all who donated last night, Fresno St. fans, too! You know, there’s a LaTech alum who sits up in the third-base corner who also supports the Wahine since she moved here.

Pomai, I checked my email. Reply in your inbox.

Hot & humid today. Yuck! Wish they served shaved ice at the stadium.

I can’t believe I’m headed out to the last home game this season…

It’s gone by too quickly. Time flies when you are busy keeping track of yellow orbs flying out of Manoa I guess.

Awesome season… Nothing more I can say that I or anyone else has already said.

It will be an emotional night, hopefully NONE are bittersweet, and hopefully ALL are wonderful.

Under Armour = best choice of attire for a day like today.

BTW, does this LaTech alum sit all the way at the top of the 3rd base side? Older caucasian woman? I see her alot both this season and last. She sometimes wears a Punahou shirt though. I thought she was with the Punahou softball program or something.

    Kazz,

Yes, the LaTech alumni-UH fan is all the way at the top.

Correction to ST’s note: I have not been volunteering all year with Na Koa. I offered last year & no one took me up on it till Don Weir became Exec. Dir. of Na Koa. But I’m still volunteering to do anything they need.

Ideas for this donation collection came from all of the Tsaikos who’ve been to the softball games. I just helped get it organized.

I’ll miss going to UH games….till the fall….

    WOW!!!

Great season for the Wahine Softball team! The first game I watched was their 2007 Regionals game against ASU. Now that I’ve been able to watch more of their games through a season, it’s apparent that these women have talent. Congratulations on winning the WAC title!

Good going by the BaseBows tonight! Amazing!

Big hand to the Tsaikos tonight! We covered all of the bases from first ‘n third base to homeplate. We had three donation containers and collected $2400 during the three games. Mahalo nui loa to all of the fans who pitched in.

Mahalo to the UH athletes who came to sit with us at the home plate donation bin! Lewis Walker, Ric Cervantes, Josh Walker & Hiram Thompson.

  129. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 1, 2010 9:18 pm

Now that I’ve had some fuud, I can catch up on the blog…

Mahalos to the Tsaikos who were there to support! BG & Kekoa handled the first base side, Ralph & NorthShoreFan hanging on to the huge jar (thanks, Pomai) in the third base stands, and the A-House clan behind home plate. Annodah Dave provided his big raffle drum again & kept trying to pass homerun bucks to the jar, but there were so many people in the stands between NSF & the korner krew.

Next project: Pomai is organizing the WAC champions bracelet donation, so stay tuned…

  138. Kekoa May 1, 2010 11:16 pm

Hats off to Slugger for taking the lead on this drive. Ralph, Pomai, my pahtna Koakane did a mighty fine job of arm wrestling the fans into submission and getting that extra dollah!

BG made some friends in the Fresneck section and I think he might have gottn a whole $2.99 from them and an IOU.

The Warrior Women of Manoa did a great job of coming back when the chips were down and did what they do best. Win by knocking the ball out of the park!

    …and with that, I say G’nite all.

  139. Jason May 1, 2010 11:25 pm

protector: I’m curious, what happens during the HSTA convention? I saw on Facebook that lefty was there as well.

I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
