Colt gives back
The NFL has approved Colt Brennan’s request to donate uniforms to the Koolauloa Red Raiders, a Pop Warner team in Hau‘ula.
“I wanted to give back,” said Brennan, who stays on the North Shore when he visits Hawai‘i.

Foist!
Morning!
That’s our Colt!
Good on Colt! Always a Winner!
Right on, Colt.
Will those unis be Red and White, Green and Black, or Burgundy and Gold?
Good interview with Greg Alexander. To paraphrase Palin, or maybe “palinphrase” given her controversial use of Newt Gingrich’s ideas’, this year’s motto should be “Pass, Baby, Pass”!
Great job once again by Colt!
Howzit, morning crew!
how did the nfl figure into this deal????…didn’t realize it was any of the nfl’s bizwax, what an athlete did with his money, o-whatevers???
Given that the NCAA just passed a rule that would basically ban camps like the All-Poly or Just Win from getting outside coaches, possibly ending those camps soon and preventing any camps on the neighbor islands, I wonder if an outside organization could create something like this for the different islands in Hawaii.
Good Morning All. Hope everyone has a great Sunday
Mahalos Bruddah Colt, good luck this year during pre-season and hopefully Coach Zorn will understand that he has a future pro-bowl quarterback on his team who wears #5 and has the last name Brennan on his jersey. As of right now, sorry but the Skins ain’t going to no Superbowl with Jason Campbell as the starter…
Kamalei Correa 15 and only entering 9th grade? Is that correct or typo? Are you held back a year when you enroll at St. Louis?
USA! USA! USA!
FIFA Confederations Cup Final starting soon on ESPN HD. Do they have another miracle in them?
KonaGold,
Like Tom Jones says, “It’s not unusual.”
Same for many other private schools; but not always the case.
Good morning everyone:
Safe trip back, Garret. Perhaps next trip out we can talk.I expect to be back in school by next year – starting off at the community college level to make sure I can handle UH-Manoa courses since I’ll be working in a field way off anything else I’ve every done before. Need the street creds with the letters after my name to talk about public infrastructure issues.
RE Treetops: I’ve been to a number of events there over the years, and it is very popular location although we haven’t eaten there on our own for at least 20 years. However, before making any plans for something beyond a month into the future, it would be wise if the planners would do some checking independent of the management.
After attending two memorial services in less than 24 hours, thoughts of death & dying are really hard to shake – especially since we’re going to be losing our Kopa`a, our oldest cat, and Saturn The Dog shortly. He’ll probably around for another few weeks before we take him in for his final visit, but Kopa`a may not be with us beyond the end of the day.
Take care everyone and have fun in the sun or cool off in an air-conditioned theatre.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
To add to Pauoa Boy’s remarks, after his Pro-Bowl days are over, Colt needs to come back to Hawai’i and run for public office… as Governor maybe. Good for the Koolauloa kids and good for Colt.
Good Morning D1 and Doc! Thanks for the heads up about the soccer match, D1!
WassupDoc,
Sorry to read about your friends.
Colt actually wanted to make the donation a few months ago. But for some reason, he needed permission from the NFL and others. It was a lengthy process.
It’s not unusual?
Uh, oh. I’m starting to do the Carlton dance.
Howzit DPK!
Very nice to see the US team all giving the proper salute during the National Anthem. A pet peeve of mine is not showing proper respect during the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner.
Play On!

OK…gotta add that to the list for the next KKall.
Hey, the OxiClean guy died.
I think it’s unique in Hawai‘i that everybody sings along to Hawai‘i Pono‘i.
Yep, it’s a Celebrity Pandemic.
Stay on the D-lo….
In actuality, way more sing the State Anthem. It makes for some real chicken skin moments…
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLL!
Stephen,
Were you ousted by the “three-person” team last nite?
Have a terrific Sunday erryboddy!
Play safe in da surf….
Why does it always sound like a swarm of bees at an international soccer game?

We were in Kahuku last night, getting whumped in ping pong. I think we went zip and 8.
At least the weather was nice. Last year it was scorching, with no wind.
G-o-o-a-a-a-l-l-l!!! USA!!!
Motion picture history is being made today. My attendance at the 12:10 showing of the Transformers is a first at the Dole complex. My date assures me that this will be well worth the senior citizen discount rate she shelled out for advanced tickets. Something called IMAX – must be like my iPhone, we’ll see.

Michelle Wie finished with another up-and-down round today at the Wegmans LPGA event in Rochester, N.Y.
She closed with a 3-under 69 to finish at 7-under 281.
The times I’ve driven out to Hau’ula and Laie communities what catches my attention are the large number of kids on their bicycles, in full football gear, probably heading to practice. Sometimes I’d see them in twos and threes, but mostly I see them riding solo along the narrow stretch of road out there. In my mind I’m thinking wow there’s very few places on the island where I see a large presence of kids in full football gear on their bicycles scurrying off to football practice. But what makes my jaw drop and do a double take is maybe three 3-4 hours later, after the sun has set, and it’s becoming dark I see a few of these kids scurrying home. Conclusion those kids out there, especially the Pop Warner kids, are cut from a different cloth than the town kids, who probably are into more so their War Craft games and skateboarding. The one time I watched them practice, near the Hukilau Restaurant in Laie there’s a field, I observed an overflow of kids on teams practicing. That should tell you something. Colt Brennan’s donation of uniforms will be very welcoming for the kids. And no doubt be put to good use. A deserved red plum to you, Colt. Thank you.
Garrett,
not sure how that would help, the AAU football. college coaches still would not be able to attend. In addition the new NCAA ruling also bans college coaches from attending/working at any camps put on by or associated with services such as Scout.com, Rivals.com and other recruiting organizations. Its a nice idea for having another camp though, most of the boys it seems that attend the New Level Camps are already D1 recruits/prospects. If they would invite local boys to their camps, maybe it would help but the issue we face in Hawaii is that a many of the athletes cant afford to go to the mainland for camps of any kind. And to do it in Hawaii? UH is already planning on doing a team camp next year, we already have an All-Star game that Scout.com covers and Im sure Rivals etc would as well if thats all that is here in the future.. Im not sure what the point would be when there are no college coaches. Rivals and Scout can still come to camps in Hawaii and report on what they see.
Yay Colt!
Boooo death. Billy Mays too? What’s going on here??? I wonder how this well affect “Pitchmen” on the Discovery channel… I like that show.
USA futbol ahead. Still half the game to go. GO USA!!!
W-Doc, sorry to hear about the popoki.
wafan,
Hope you had a safe landing.
KonaGold,
No, students are not held back when they go to Saint Louis. could be that he just turned 15, which would mean he’ll be 18 going on 19 when he graduates. thats not that unusual. could be he was held back before kindergarten or held back in another grade. But no, its not Saint Louis’ policy at all, to hold someone back.
Can the camps be coached by alumni? With some of the active players volunteering their time?
Didn’t the Wahine Volleyball alumni run a few clinics?
Good morning Tsai-kos!!
Hope you’re all having a great weekend.
WTG Colt!! Boo No Fun League!
KonaGold – I was wondering the same thing. Article says his bday is in April. The local private schools usually set the cutoff for boys entering Kindergarten as June or August. Means he’ll be 19 when he graduates.
Continuing the thought from the last blog about the two young incoming freshmen at St. Louis HS (?) that Coach Mack has offered early scholarships to…very good precedence he is setting here..this is great, for it not only fuels those kids drive as being recognized..but also other Hawaii High School football players watching on.
Another young high schooler to keep an eye on is (IMO) HPA Shane Brostek. Good blood lines, too. Played DL on the varsity last year as a freshmen. Already in the 6’3″ 280 range. He also did very well in the shot put, throwing close to 52 feet, which he is seemingly on pace to becoming Hawaii’s first 60 foot shot putter (the records 59).
Thank you Doris…just curious, because I went to St. Louis in ’66, on a scholarship and was curious if policy was changed, but you answered it. Further it a little more, I believe that he will be 19 at the time of his graduation if his birthday is in April.
Doris,
Is it possible that the NCAA left some type of loophole in the rules that allows for these type of AAU football camps? I don’t understand why those type of camps are expanding when other camps are being decimated by the coaches ban.
It seems like the all-star type camps being run by New Level Athletics like AAU camps, which could mean that the travel expenses are covered by the sponsors. If they had these type of camps on the neighbor islands and invited local boys, then that would fill a need if the Just Win Camp has to end. It would be a nice complement to the UH camps, especially if local athletes could compete against top athletes from the mainland.
Maybe the new NCAA ban will prevent this from happening. But it seems like the AAU-type football camps are expanding (now in 4 states!) while the other camps are being hurt by the coaches ban. Maybe the NCAA ban had some type of loophole in it accidentally? Or maybe someone (*cough* New Level Athletics *cough*) paid/lobbied for a loophole that would kill off their competition and let them dominate the market?
WassupDoc,
My condolences to you and your family. I had to deal with dogs dying when I was a kid, but I think it was much harder to deal with my dog Katie’s recent death even though I’m an adult now and should be able to deal with it better.
It is VERY common where we live in San Diego for boys to be held back a year before starting Kindergarten. It is felt that they will be more mature and able to handle school with the extra year…but I’m sure that the benefit for athletics and academics is not ignored. When my older daughter went to Kindergarten after preschool, a number of boys her age that went to her preschool stayed at the preschool for another year.
Another reason why boys are held back in San Diego is that Kindergarten is only half day, so working parents have to send their kids to child care (at the schools) until they get off work. Parents rather keep their kids in full-day preschool if they have to pay for child care anyway.
GARRET’s point
is followed by some of the private coed schools in Hawaii on the theory that the females are more “mature” socially and intellectually than the males and they hold back the guys for that reason. This apparently seems to be their rationale and it isn’t just for kindergarten but for the school levels above.
Bummer. “Pitchmen” was the favorite new show in our house. Billy Mays Jr. was great at what he did and was a very colorful personality to boot. He will be missed.
Re-Thomas Heffernan
Admittingly, I don’t know very much about the head strength and conditioning person at the UH. I read his bio and watched the recent video of him leading a summer conditioning workout at the beach. Over the tens years at UH he seems to be more so in the shadow of Mel, and my gut feeling is that I don’t think this is a good thing.
Sizing up Thomas Heffernan I can see that he looks the part of drill sergeant, and my first impression of the aura he exudes he looks the part of a Coach Bear Bryant type. He seems to be very serious. And a no nonsense type of person.
And I think the players need these types of instructors. Because the bottom line is that you want the players performing to their top potential, and being out of condition deters their performances. You want the instructors voice to resonate an be commanding. And the leaders presence piquing their respect. I think my appraisal of TH does more so than Mel.
In my eyes TH is a different bred, not a laugher, nor a fraternizer with the players, but a part of the link of the chain overall that would solidify more if he took more of a role in the strength and conditioning of the Warriors.
Wow I did not know that players from the NFL needed permission to spend their own money. Is there a special form they need to fill out to buy TP?
Colt is still the man.
Tom is responsible for all sports, seems like Mel does only football
Mel also does men’s volleyball.
There’s also a guy named Steve who does a really good job.
There are a lot of weight-training/conditioning guys. Players have a menu of coaches and programs.
I think one of our readers got the wrong impression when he thinks the manual is the only training guide. The manual includes several guides and methods. Since coaches can’t communicate about training with players during the offseason — thus no recordings — the manual is the way all schools go. But I thought it was kind of fun to see the guy get worked up, so I kept it vague.
Anyway, I’ll bring some giveaways to Saturday’s party.
Everyone’s invited.
I thought it was ironic I got spam on the OxiClean story.
kamalei is from an excellent ohana and background…..yeah, he did stay back but he is sound all the way around and is a great athlete and totally respectful and humble–he will be working out in that legendary neighborhood kuliouou gym by invite and tutored by the master himself…..yup, he is still growing….great offer by MAC n staff!
In re to Tommy H, UH/HAT–tommy is certified by degree and otherwise–he is well liked by players and goes back pre–JJ era. Great gentleman and dedicated to program.
Uncle Mel helps w the football program and was empowered by JJ, not uncommon w most athletic programs to have more than one assisting one sport….it only benefits the players and program. Our local boyz potentially are hard workers (like Haku, Blaze, Pilares, John Estes, Kiesel-Kauhane, et al) but its always good to have monitoring and steady guidance. Wish we had more!
Michelle Wie finished tied for 10th, per lpga dot com.
It will be interesting to see how national recruiting shapes up after the new camp rule is implemented.
There really is enough good information out there to evaluate a prospect’s talent, such as videos and coaches’ recommendations.
Trouble is, everyone has developed the Kiper Jr. mentality. They want numbers: 40 times, 100 times, bench-press reps, etc.
And you can’t get those just watching videos of a guy’s game. The only way to get wide-spread attention is to put on combines and All-Poly camps (where awards are presented). That’s a shame, but that’s also the reality of recruiting.
JJ and Mack don’t rely on those so-called measurables. That’s how they landed Ryan Grice-Mullins and Tala Esera. It was Miano’s wife Lori, who grew up on the North Shore, who first alerted the coaches to Esera. The coaches then really noticed Esera when they were scouting Mapu. They liked Esera’s footwork. Unfortunately, there are no scores for good footwork.
But, maybe, this will be good.
There was a time when camps were used as seminars to improve, not as auditions for scholarships.
I think the rule will enhance the importance of altruistic people, such as Doris, as opposed to those out to make a buck.
Michelle needs to keep grindin away at improvin her game–from tee to green….continue to be humble and stay at work towards correcting negatives in her game–as Tiger says, not many can that…..I see growth–it’s comin 4 MW.
mw another top ten finish… seems like one bad round in every tournament keeps her from being number one…one more tournament coming this week, last chance to qualify for the U.S. Open by winning the tournament…
Re-Prediction
Even money.
UH goes 13-0 if Funaki rushes for 800 yards
I’d bet a bar tab on this one. And/or a food tab, too… I say UH will go 13-0 if Funaki rushes for 800 yards.
Looking at the 13 game schedule I don’t think UH will be a heavy underdog in any of the games. And that is how it stands right now in my mind if the Warriors repeated their set plays from a year ago.. But if Funaki can go full throttle this coming season it would change the whole complexion of the team’s predicted won-lose record by the pollsters. Factoring in Funaki rushing for about 60 yards a game would open up the offense hugely, where the opponent’s defenses would have to play UH offense honestly. This would open up the offense completely, especially the passing game. With Funaki attacking the edges on rushing plays would add pressure to the secondary and linebackers, where they can’t cheat a step in covering the receivers on passing plays. This will give a step in favor to the UH speedy WR on the passing plays. With Funaki rushing the ball, also, keeps the opponents D-Line aggression neutralized, where they don’t relentlessly pin their ears back and rush the QB (like in many games last year). UH has to let the O-Line get into a rhythm where they aren’t traumatized by fast pass rushers all the time. If Funaki can garner about 14-15 rushes a game and gain 60 yards I envision a domino effect taking place in the offense with Leon, Pilares, Libre, and Greg being productive on the ground, too. I also like the concept of rushing the ball because it keeps the ball in the Warriors hands longer and also gives the Warrior defense a breather. Play action passes would have creditability. Having the other teams concentrating on Funaki would give the unexpected plays, like screens, shuffle passes, QB draws and flare passes a higher success rate.
Also why I feel confident about this bet is providing Funaki gets his 800 yards, I think when you put all the information together, like how the coaches saying this group of receivers, collectively, as being the best group ever it is also my opinion that the secondary and defensive backs are one of the best groups ever.I saw this in the spring scrimmage where the secondary players were really guarding the WR well (and they were WR were super fast). There must be a lot of misinformation about the Warriors amongst the national sports writers if they think the Warriors will have a hard time breaking even (won and losses). I think the secondary, O-Line, WR and special teams will out perform this year. I think the Warriors will be vulnerable at DE and LB (especially on pass defense).
Bottom line I think the Warriors will surprise this year, and you know how judicious I’m with my praise about the Warriors this may come as a shock. But I do envision the team’s success coming around favorable if the team is multi dimensional on offense, especially with Funaki rushing the ball.
carlton dance…. wasn’t carlton aka alfonso ribiero the one time michael jackson copy cat as a child. dressing and dancing the part, beat it, etc.
tsai, i think the carlton dance and song would do you good.
roysan16-
I like the way you think, although I am surprised by your comments. If our coaches can get creative enough with our offense and Inoke- I too believe great things can happen. All I ask is that the defensive secondary play fast and play smart. I’m sick of opposing receivers torching our guys.
Why do all the good TV pitchmen die first?
Billy Mays in his OxyClean and ESPN360 commercials was WAY BETTER than the Shamwow guy.

Does anyone know if there is anything on the net re the football teams playing at Roosevelt today? Pretty cool event. Looked nicely run. The players looked like they had a blast.

The FAA apparently blames Billy Mays’ death on him not wearing a seat belt when the plane was landing.
Garret-
The news had a clip of him after the flight commenting about his “bump on the head”.
Just thinking about it:
How does a seatbelt help if something fell on his head from above him?
Nevermind my previous comment.
Looks like forces sent him upward into the overhead compartment. A seatbelt probably could have helped.
No.
I think I had it right the first time.
I should just go to bed.
crw, would have tried to contact you when was in az, but we were out at san carlos with the “apaches”. pretty nice place and get plenty of keawe trees, snakes, gila monsters, etc. good to see that we going get one player from paradise valley. my favorite place was the marriott’s mountain shadow resort on lincoln, but when tear it down.
Colt Brennan, that is awesome!
WassupDoc, I am so sorry to hear that about your little furbabies; they are like family members.

The change in coaching staff with the Browns could be bad for Mel Purcell. The new coach came from the Jets and brought 2 DEs to start for the Browns…so, both players added immediately jumped over him in the depth chart.

Mahalo for the good thoughts about our animals. What makes it so frustrating is that our vet cannot tell us what’s wrong with Kopa`a – a white cat with one blue eye and one yellow eye whom DrDoc rescued as she was floating in a box down Kalihi Stream back in August, 1994. . A couple of kids ran into his office at Kuhio Park Terrace where he worked yelling for Uncle Jim; he never even had a second thought about going into the water. He took off his shoes and sox, rolled up his pants, and waded out to get this tiny little kitten.
Anyhow, we do know what it isn’t making her sick but not what is so she’s going in tomorrow for an ultrasound to see if the cause can be identified. She doesn’t seem to be in pain, but she won’t/can’t eat.
Unlike Saturn The Dog’s lymphoma which was diagnosed last November in about 20 minutes, this one is so hard to take because she’s still sleeping next to my head and purring in my ear. When our other cats reached their end days, they withdrew from us, but she’s still with us.
Busy week coming up – wrapping up all the details for the FALLS OF CLYDE fundraiser on Tuesday, attending meetings & hearings, and being on a planning committee for one of the entries in the Kailua Fourth of July Parade.
DrDoc is taking it easy this year and riding in a trolley with the State Democratic Party with the other Old Futs, but I’ll be marching in the hot sun with others supporting keeping public access to our beaches open. Must remember to wear a hat so my brains don’t get fried. More fried.
Am also looking forward to the fireworks on Friday night and the party at BayView on Saturday. Anyone up for miniature golf? How about some friendly wagers with the money going to Koa Anuenue’s scholarship fund?
Time to go eat popcorn – real kind cooked in oil on the stove.
Howzit Whitey! Howz you tonight?

Transformed by the Transformer movie into a semi-coma. The movie was boring in parts as the animaronics were a bit overdone. Another very weak plot, as most movies of this genre tend to be. Moments of comic emotion try to hold the audience’s attention. Pure escapisim and blast power entertainment from begining to end for the youngsters.
I’m usually not so critical of grade B, low budget movies, but my wife sprung for the tickets. I felt I owed her the Tsaiko ohana my humble opinion. Rob25 was right. They would make excellent LB’s.
Bottom line, save your $15 general admission. ($11.50/Sr.) Wait for it to come out on cable.
Insightful. I had not considered this point of view before.

Got home a little while ago from great weekend at Camp Erdman! Among many things, met a very cool young man who could be the next great stadium announcer in Hawaii. He is soooo goood! I can just see him introducing the Warriors at Aloha Stadium and having the crowd go WILD!
Who do we talk to about such things???
k- nitey night and SWEET Warrior Dreams!
I wonder if an outside organization could create something like this for the different islands in Hawaii.

Looking forward to John Estes on the WB show.
