Here’s the skinny on Kevin Clune, UH’s new defensive coordinator:
• He will oversee the entire defense, but will work closely with the inside linebackers.
• Inside linebackers? Yes, the Aggies — for whom he coached linebackers the past five years — ran a multiple-attack scheme rooted in a 3-4. But there will be four-lineman looks, blitzing linebackers, man presses, zone blitzes … “That gives you the opportunity to bring people from a lot of different places,” Clune said. “It’ll be a mesh of all those things.”
• He is admittedly a “loud” coach. He will teach overall concepts while allowing his assistants to coach the details. “They’re going to have their own voice and their own role,” Clune said of the assistant coaches.
• He will coach from the sideline during games. “It’s about communication, and maybe seeing somebody’s eyes when I’m trying to explain something.”
• He previously joined three teams coming off one-victory seasons. “You look at everywhere I started,” Clune said. “The record might not have been great. My job is to make it better.”
• Yes, he is aware of UH’s deficiencies. “I’m not afraid of the issues, of what people may see as negatives,” Clune said. “We’ll overcome those things. And that’s part of the challenge. That’s part of the deal. Oh, the travel is hard? We’ll, that’s something you’re going to have to overcome. We’re going to do it. This facility is this …? Well, who cares? We’ll find a way. I coached junior college. There were days we didn’t have footballs. Well, guess what? We found a way to deal with it and practice. Whatever it is, we’ll overcome it.”
• He is a self-styled workaholic. “It’s something where you sacrifice other parts of your life,” Clune said. “I’m a single guy. I don’t have kids. That’s what we do. We coach ball. We coach kids. I don’t have kids, but I have 113 (players) I need to get to class and make sure they’re fed right, all of those things. Those are my kids that I have to take care of.”

Is there something going on in Davone’s personal life that has caused this change? It is a bit out of the ordinary from what we have gotten to know of this young man. He has a future, it’s a bit sad to learn that it is currently going in a bad direction.
Sounds like a no-excuse kind of coach that lives and dreams football.
They can go two ways: 1) Get a second coach for the secondary, or 2) Hire a guy to coach the outside linebackers/defensive ends.

I’ve read on another board that Clune said in a radio interview that he isn’t going to be involved with the hiring of the linebacker coach.
Is dat a true statement?

Aloha All! Not sure what is personally happening with Javone, but can say that if he is actually practicing the precepts of being a Rastafarian, and the teachings of their messiah incarnate, Hailie Selassie, much of the theology is bent on subverting the dominant paradigm. It a religion based on much social unrest on the colonization of former African countries. Do, even the usage of Ganga is meant to not only commune and converse with Jah, but also as form of social protest.
Obviously, many folks cite Rasta just for the liberties of getting to smoke all the time. I sort of view Davone on a quest similar to Ricki Williams, e.g a man of color in search of his individual place in society. Professional sports can be an overt paradox to many, as the material rewards are abundant, however it goes counter, in some ways to achieving a more meaningful purpose in life and society. Thus, more thoughtful individuals, become lost with the pendatic aspects of football, that is to say, chattel on display for the entertainment of the masses.
Ricki Williams left the NFL to make his own articulation of his value to himself and society that was separate and distinct from bring a professional athlete. I hope these series of events for Javone can be utilized for serious introspection and solace, as he decides his future–just 2 cents.

I read Williams was diagnosed with a social anxiety disorder, and (ridiculously as that may sound) was partly to blame for his addiction problems according to one health professional who treated him.
Anyway, I’m thinking that Bess could benefit from some therapy to see what’s ailing him. Based on what I read about the airport incident, he was behaving peculiar which made authorities think he may have been under the influence, perhaps on some type of prescription pain medication which wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for athletes.
Shoko, this is true. From what I understand, Ricki tried to mitigate for many years, via weed, his social anxiety. While probably marginally effective in the short-term, it never gets to the root of the problem, and in the long-term, exacerbates his existing condition.
Many men of color, much more outside the context of Hawai’i, do encounter, in various degrees, this inability to securely identify their role and place in society. This is a rather profound phenomenon, and has its roots, why some folks join gangs, become addicted to substances or have prolonged effects of depression. With a world that moves at a terribly quick rate, a 24/7 information cycle, and ever increasing lack of a family and/or community element, one under the best of circumstances, can become easily lost. That said, it is the reason why we all should always have fun and spirited debates on this board, but at the end of the day, show each other aloha and respect. In short, this is one of our communities….

Clune is saying all the right things… Sounds like he’s ready for the challenge. I love that he said he’s going to use a multi faceted attack on defense. Keeping things unpredictable is the best way help a defense with issues. Sure, it’ll get burned once in a while if the opponent dials up the perfect play call and executes. The key is that the unpredictability lowers the odds of a big play from happening. The last two years, the defense was a sitting duck at times as the defensive playcalling became predictable in certain situations.
28… hopefully, its a case of a guy with a nice new contract getting a little out of control with his new pay grade. That’s fixable if the player wants to fix it. CTE is way more serious, so I hope it’s the former.
Coaching the secondary has to be one of the most difficult jobs with everyone spread out all over. Interesting how coaching responsibilities are broken down at some schools in a very specialized manner – safeties coach, defensive tackles coach, defensive ends coach, outside backers, inside backers. I’ve even seen a coach who only coaches the nose guards.

How refreshing to read so many positive posts!
Coach Clune, as I’ve poster prior, is a good guy, he’s a straight shooter, genuinely cares for his players, and is an encourager. When our son played at Weber State, he was blessed to be with Coach for his freshman year, the year they won the Big Sky Conference. After that season, much of the staff moved on to other opportunities.
He was coaching at Weber State the year they played the University of Hawaii at Aloha Stadium which found the Wildcats holding the lead at halftime.
I look forward to great things from Coach Clune and a better year for the University.
Regarding Davonne…people relax it’s just weed. Alcohol is much worst, everyday I wonder why it’s still legal (fighting, anger, drunk driving and killing people, spouse abuse, alcohol abuse etc). It’s a cheap high that never has any positives (2.5 mil deaths per year world wide)….at least weed has proven benefits both medically and spiritually (and no known documented deaths caused by overdose in 10K years of recorded history). Jah Bless….

Actually “Molly” can lethal. Mrs. Boola kanaka is an ER doctor and has seen many a kid from a rave or musical fests, who have ODed, some even fatal. While purity can effect the high and comedown, as it effects neuro transmitters, one never can tell how the person will be affected. Like anything else, you don’t want to end up being the exception…

Many people use marijuana on occasion and for the most part it does very little that is harmful. Probably a better choice than alcohol in that regard. People who use marijuana habitually get as messed up as with any other drug. They may be a little quieter in their mess but they are messed up nonetheless.

You mentioned 5 recruits visiting this weekend and someone posted a picture on another site. There were 4 recruits confirmed as Daniel Lewis, Darrian Josey, Marquis Fairchild and Nick Nelson. The 5th had a #54 on his jersey and he looks like a lineman and pretty similar to Larry Allen, Jr’s picture except haircut. If it’s him, it would be a great get. Can you confirm?
