Clune report

Here’s the skinny on Kevin Clune, UH’s new defensive coordinator:

• He will oversee the entire defense, but will work closely with the inside linebackers.

• Inside linebackers? Yes, the Aggies — for whom he coached linebackers the past five years — ran a multiple-attack scheme rooted in a 3-4. But there will be four-lineman looks, blitzing linebackers, man presses, zone blitzes … “That gives you the opportunity to bring people from a lot of different places,” Clune said. “It’ll be a mesh of all those things.”

• He is admittedly a “loud” coach. He will teach overall concepts while allowing his assistants to coach the details. “They’re going to have their own voice and their own role,” Clune said of the assistant coaches.

• He will coach from the sideline during games. “It’s about communication, and maybe seeing somebody’s eyes when I’m trying to explain something.”

• He previously joined three teams coming off one-victory seasons. “You look at everywhere I started,” Clune said. “The record might not have been great. My job is to make it better.”

• Yes, he is aware of  UH’s deficiencies. “I’m not afraid of the issues, of what people may see as negatives,” Clune said. “We’ll overcome those things. And that’s part of the challenge. That’s part of the deal. Oh, the travel is hard? We’ll, that’s something you’re going to have to overcome. We’re going to do it. This facility is this …? Well, who cares? We’ll find a way. I coached junior college. There were days we didn’t have footballs. Well, guess what? We found a way to deal with it and practice. Whatever it is, we’ll overcome it.”

• He is a self-styled workaholic. “It’s something where you sacrifice other parts of your life,” Clune said. “I’m a single guy. I don’t have kids. That’s what we do. We coach ball. We coach kids. I don’t have kids, but I have 113 (players) I need to get to class and make sure they’re fed right, all of those things. Those are my kids that I have to take care of.”

If he will coach LBs, will they hire another coach for another position, ie someone like say Richard Torres or Lance Samuseva?

  4. jm2375 January 17, 2014 8:18 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Hope Davone Bess gets his act cleaned up.

Hope the Warriors play better tonight. Last night was hard to watch.
    GO WARRIORS!

  5. Honu888 January 17, 2014 8:22 am

I like his attitude. Sounds like he could turn this defense around.
Let’s see what he can do.

  6. Buffoman January 17, 2014 8:24 am

Is there something going on in Davone’s personal life that has caused this change? It is a bit out of the ordinary from what we have gotten to know of this young man. He has a future, it’s a bit sad to learn that it is currently going in a bad direction.

  7. Shoko January 17, 2014 8:26 am

Sounds like a no-excuse kind of coach that lives and dreams football.

  8. Stephen Tsai January 17, 2014 8:26 am

They can go two ways: 1) Get a second coach for the secondary, or 2) Hire a guy to coach the outside linebackers/defensive ends.

  9. Stephen Tsai January 17, 2014 8:27 am

We all wish Davone Bess the best.

  21. Shoko January 17, 2014 8:59 am

I’ve read on another board that Clune said in a radio interview that he isn’t going to be involved with the hiring of the linebacker coach.

    Is dat a true statement?

  22. KapaaWarrior January 17, 2014 9:02 am

Sounds like we may have a good defensive coordinator here people? We will see how things roll out. But he has a proven record of turn around so I am optimistic HAWAII WARRIOR NATION! Happy Aloha Friday Gangy !

  23. Boolakanaka January 17, 2014 9:10 am

Aloha All! Not sure what is personally happening with Javone, but can say that if he is actually practicing the precepts of being a Rastafarian, and the teachings of their messiah incarnate, Hailie Selassie, much of the theology is bent on subverting the dominant paradigm. It a religion based on much social unrest on the colonization of former African countries. Do, even the usage of Ganga is meant to not only commune and converse with Jah, but also as form of social protest.

Obviously, many folks cite Rasta just for the liberties of getting to smoke all the time. I sort of view Davone on a quest similar to Ricki Williams, e.g a man of color in search of his individual place in society. Professional sports can be an overt paradox to many, as the material rewards are abundant, however it goes counter, in some ways to achieving a more meaningful purpose in life and society. Thus, more thoughtful individuals, become lost with the pendatic aspects of football, that is to say, chattel on display for the entertainment of the masses.

Ricki Williams left the NFL to make his own articulation of his value to himself and society that was separate and distinct from bring a professional athlete. I hope these series of events for Javone can be utilized for serious introspection and solace, as he decides his future–just 2 cents.

  24. Luki January 17, 2014 9:13 am

Praying Bess has help dealing with these recent happenings. From what we’ve come to know of him, seems out of character. Get well bro…

  25. Shoko January 17, 2014 9:18 am

I read Williams was diagnosed with a social anxiety disorder, and (ridiculously as that may sound) was partly to blame for his addiction problems according to one health professional who treated him.

  26. Shoko January 17, 2014 9:23 am

Anyway, I’m thinking that Bess could benefit from some therapy to see what’s ailing him. Based on what I read about the airport incident, he was behaving peculiar which made authorities think he may have been under the influence, perhaps on some type of prescription pain medication which wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for athletes.

  27. Boolakanaka January 17, 2014 9:31 am

Shoko, this is true. From what I understand, Ricki tried to mitigate for many years, via weed, his social anxiety. While probably marginally effective in the short-term, it never gets to the root of the problem, and in the long-term, exacerbates his existing condition.

Many men of color, much more outside the context of Hawai’i, do encounter, in various degrees, this inability to securely identify their role and place in society. This is a rather profound phenomenon, and has its roots, why some folks join gangs, become addicted to substances or have prolonged effects of depression. With a world that moves at a terribly quick rate, a 24/7 information cycle, and ever increasing lack of a family and/or community element, one under the best of circumstances, can become easily lost. That said, it is the reason why we all should always have fun and spirited debates on this board, but at the end of the day, show each other aloha and respect. In short, this is one of our communities….

  28. cocobean January 17, 2014 9:36 am

Davonne…..hope his bad behaviour is not early signs of CTE.

  29. bowwar January 17, 2014 10:09 am

I hope things straighten out for Bess…Too bad, a UH success story going South.

  30. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2014 10:13 am

Clune is saying all the right things… Sounds like he’s ready for the challenge. I love that he said he’s going to use a multi faceted attack on defense. Keeping things unpredictable is the best way help a defense with issues. Sure, it’ll get burned once in a while if the opponent dials up the perfect play call and executes. The key is that the unpredictability lowers the odds of a big play from happening. The last two years, the defense was a sitting duck at times as the defensive playcalling became predictable in certain situations.

  31. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2014 10:16 am

28… hopefully, its a case of a guy with a nice new contract getting a little out of control with his new pay grade. That’s fixable if the player wants to fix it. CTE is way more serious, so I hope it’s the former.

  32. Old School Dave January 17, 2014 10:55 am

Coaching the secondary has to be one of the most difficult jobs with everyone spread out all over. Interesting how coaching responsibilities are broken down at some schools in a very specialized manner – safeties coach, defensive tackles coach, defensive ends coach, outside backers, inside backers. I’ve even seen a coach who only coaches the nose guards.

  33. Da Punchbowl Kid January 17, 2014 11:08 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Prayers for Davonne – this seems so totally out of character for him.

Like the report on the new DC. Hope we see some fierce, bangin’ defense next season.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  34. Bulla January 17, 2014 11:14 am

    Good Morning,

How refreshing to read so many positive posts!

Coach Clune, as I’ve poster prior, is a good guy, he’s a straight shooter, genuinely cares for his players, and is an encourager. When our son played at Weber State, he was blessed to be with Coach for his freshman year, the year they won the Big Sky Conference. After that season, much of the staff moved on to other opportunities.

He was coaching at Weber State the year they played the University of Hawaii at Aloha Stadium which found the Wildcats holding the lead at halftime.

I look forward to great things from Coach Clune and a better year for the University.

  35. Go Figure... January 17, 2014 12:07 pm

Regarding Davonne…people relax it’s just weed. Alcohol is much worst, everyday I wonder why it’s still legal (fighting, anger, drunk driving and killing people, spouse abuse, alcohol abuse etc). It’s a cheap high that never has any positives (2.5 mil deaths per year world wide)….at least weed has proven benefits both medically and spiritually (and no known documented deaths caused by overdose in 10K years of recorded history). Jah Bless….

  36. Kevin January 17, 2014 12:22 pm

Twitter is your friend if don’t have impulse control problems.

Celebrities use it for publicity, others well.. oh well.

  37. Kevin January 17, 2014 12:23 pm

Beer – people at Aloha Stadium beefing.

Weed – people at Aloha Stadium racking up concession revenue and sitting in their seats giggling or staring.

    Lesser of two “evils” is pretty obvious. 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

  38. NorthShoreFan January 17, 2014 12:43 pm

    Guud afternoon Tsaikos……huge swells….be safe

Davonne needs to get back to the islands..find his focus again…was doing great charity work and now…heal up man…you got too many good things to do yet.

  39. Andrew January 17, 2014 12:51 pm

    37.

Of course I’m not suggesting it, but in that case might as well allow Ecstacy. At least even if the team is horrible, everyone would be happy and there would be no fights haha…

  40. Go Figure... January 17, 2014 1:11 pm

Hey Andrew 39. that would not be a pretty site, 20-40K rolling balls….if it’s molly or street ecstacy then no problem, but 180mg MDMA hooooo boy would be a ugly but lovely crowd at the stadium. Stick to the weed instead, much less chance of everyone stripping down and touchy feeling all night long. “what game?…..”

  41. Boolakanaka January 17, 2014 1:19 pm

Actually “Molly” can lethal. Mrs. Boola kanaka is an ER doctor and has seen many a kid from a rave or musical fests, who have ODed, some even fatal. While purity can effect the high and comedown, as it effects neuro transmitters, one never can tell how the person will be affected. Like anything else, you don’t want to end up being the exception…

  42. Go Figure... January 17, 2014 1:32 pm

@ 41 Boo…Oh definitely, any illicit drug use outside of marijuana is and can be very dangerous (no promoting doing drugs here) was just imagining a stadium filled with raving E droppers….yes kids stay off drugs and alcohol please!!!!

although when you combine all illicit drug use together (heroin, cocaine, ecstacy, speed, meth, etc) the total number of deaths per year in the US doesn’t even come close to alcohol, yet us stupid americans still promote and keep it legal…shoot half the commercials on tv is alcohol related….hmmmm makes wonder. It’s like the gun debate…the “for” people say, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”…..uhhhh the gun still killed the person, imagine if the gun wasn’t there in the first place….

  43. Pu'uwai January 17, 2014 1:43 pm

    Prays for Davone Bess.

    Good luck to Coach Clune.

    Imua Rainbow Warriors!!!

  44. Andrew January 17, 2014 1:57 pm

wow was just a joke…didn’t think it would spark such a conversation.

  45. Marleysdad January 17, 2014 2:11 pm

    E-tards…………….don’t do it kids.

    Ways Marijuana can kill you,
    1. eat a hand full & choke to death.
    2. a heavy crate of marijuana falls & crushes you.
    3. you slip on a baggie of marijuana, fall & snap your spinal cord.
    4. a serial killer’s name IS Marijuana.

    Ways Marijuana can’t kill you,
    1. smoking it.

When someone kills with a gun, the knee jerk reaction is to ban guns….

When a drunk kills do we ban the car? Or the alcohol?

When someone is bludgeoned to death with a bat, do we ban baseball?

Hmmmm, sum ting wong with our logic.

  46. Fei Jai January 17, 2014 2:34 pm

But can KC teach a tired old man how to be a better chess player? That is the real question.

Norm has a new bishop, but has Norm improved his game? A new chess piece means nothing if you haven’t improved your own game.

Replacing board pieces – swapping one bishop for another bishop – means nothing if the player in charge of moving those pieces around on the board himself has not improved his game.

  47. Bulla January 17, 2014 2:40 pm

    Fei Jai

well said and i agree; somehting has to change from the top for anything good to happen

  48. jimmy the lock January 17, 2014 2:44 pm

    Maybe try checkers?

  49. Fan January 17, 2014 3:01 pm

Many people use marijuana on occasion and for the most part it does very little that is harmful. Probably a better choice than alcohol in that regard. People who use marijuana habitually get as messed up as with any other drug. They may be a little quieter in their mess but they are messed up nonetheless.

  50. gobows January 17, 2014 3:02 pm

Cleveland will do that to anybody…jk

Fei jai – he can still do damage if he gets another bishop.

I wonder if Davone recently became a Rastafarian…it seems his posting lately reflects a relationship to that religion…He did live in Miami for 5-6yrs so there is a strong possibility he’s adapted to teachings…

  53. jonj January 17, 2014 7:41 pm

Sounds to me like he’s on more than marijuana! Did he have someone in the family recently pass away??

  54. kev-1 January 17, 2014 7:54 pm

You idiots who are on this blog saying that there is nothing wrong with weed need to get off the weed. Ummmmmmmm . . . let me see if I can think of an example of how weed can f__k up your life . . . oh, yeah . . . Davonne Bess. I hope the weed was good, because your brain is fried homie.

Bess is doing his best Ricky Williams impression.

It may not kill you, but it can f__k up your life.

Congrats to the vb Warriors! What a great game! And very entertaining, to say the least, sitting next to UHfan808 and a-joe. Portagee 1 and Portagee 2. 🙄 😆

I think we can all agree on 2 things. One, Oceanic made the WRONG decision not to televise this game and should be showing every game. Two, Charlie Wade made the correct decision to NOT redshirt Kupono Fey.

  68. Truman January 18, 2014 2:33 am

    Hey ST,
You mentioned 5 recruits visiting this weekend and someone posted a picture on another site. There were 4 recruits confirmed as Daniel Lewis, Darrian Josey, Marquis Fairchild and Nick Nelson. The 5th had a #54 on his jersey and he looks like a lineman and pretty similar to Larry Allen, Jr’s picture except haircut. If it’s him, it would be a great get. Can you confirm?

  69. mo808 January 18, 2014 7:05 am

    Good Morning Folks!

Woohoo! Great comeback and win last night MVB Warriors! (wish that game was televised 🙁 )

    Have a great day folks!

  70. Slugger January 18, 2014 7:09 am

    Good luck to Coach Clune!

    Hope Davonne gets it together.

  71. Shoko January 18, 2014 7:45 am

Could have sworn our illustrious blog host mentioned that Chris Gant was invited to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl along with Schroeder, yet I don’t see Gant’s name on the 25-man American team’s roster.

Did he not accept the invite, or did he get invited to another bowl (Senior or Shrine)?

  72. Bryson January 18, 2014 7:52 am

Re#68:That is the question of the day who is #54 in that recruiting picture…

  73. Sofaking_blk January 18, 2014 8:01 am

The cops said Bess resisted arrest, cops can say whatever they want and make it stick. The law is what they say it is. I’m sure there’s more to this story that we don’t know about. BTW, I don’t trust FLorida cops as far as I can throw them.

  74. Shoko January 18, 2014 8:28 am

Yep, there’s always more to the story. We’re fed bits and pieces by the media and speculate accordingly. It’s what we do. Well, its what I do. We all love sports, but the drama that surrounds sports we love even more. Well, its what I love about it. This stuff is better than any reality show on television.
