Class action

Here’s a progress report on the Warriors’ 2011 recruiting class:

Initial signings:

Junior Alexis, defensive tackle — The plan was for Alexis to join UH as a grayshirt in January. But in the last week of July, Miami sneaked in, and made an offer. Alexis went there before UH could make a counter-offer to bring him in for training camp.

• Justin Alo, quarterback — Also a gray-shirt commitment, Alo is not eligible to join the Warriors in January. He is taking part-time classes and plans to join the Warriors in 2013.

Chinedu Amadi, slotback — A promising prospect, Amadi is seeking a medical hardship after suffering a shoulder injury. He  should be 100 percent for spring ball.

Ijumaa Armstrong, cornerback — He is redshirting this season.

Brian Clay, safety — Primary backup at both safety positions.

Craig Cofer, defensive end — Great improvement the past few weeks; made the travel roster to LaTech. After this season, Cofer has two years of eligibility.

Brenden Daley, linebacker — Redshirting after undergoing foot surgery. Should be 100 percent for spring ball.

Trevor Davis, wideout — Serving an apprenticeship under Royce Pollard. Davis was on the travel roster for both trips.

Ben Dew, guard — Redshirting this season.

Cecil Doe, wideout — Making progress after transferring from a run-oriented program.

Mike Edwards, cornerback — Starting field corner and kick returner.

Penitito Faalologo, linebacker — Delayed enrolling because of a family death; will join in January.

Chris Gant, slotback — Made the adjustment from wideout; was on the first road trip.

Tyler Gray, linebacker — Set to join Warriors in January.

Will Gregory, running back — Showed promise in training camp, but after much debate, it was decided to redshirt Gregory this season.

Ellis Henderson, slotback — Grayshirted after undergoing shoulder surgery. Will join Warriors in January.

Tigi Hill, linebacker — Playing at Mesa College.

Jared Leaf, running back — He is redshirting after UH decided it needed to space out the classes at that position.

Ben Mamea, linebacker — Attending local four-year school. After this academic year, he will go on a two-year church mission, then join the Warriors in 2014.

Blake Muir, offensive tackle — He has made both trips, but is being held out of games to preserve his redshirt year.

Thomas Olds, offensive lineman — Redshirting this season. He’s drawn comparisons to Austin Hansen.

Mike Sellers, defensive back — Starting nickelback.

Kendrick Van Ackeren, linebacker — Played well after moving to linebacker. Redshirting this season.

Justin Vele, linebacker — Redshirting this season.

Tavita Woodard, defensive end — Underwent foot surgery in August; cleared to practice this week.

Post-signing day additions:

Ben Clarke, offensive lineman — He’s enrolled as a part-time UH student. Joins the Warriors in January.

Brandon Leslie, safety — Recently cleared after recovering from concussion.

Ikaika Woolsey, quarterback — Attending City College of San Francisco as a part-time student. He is allowed to practice with the Rams but not play in any games. He joins the Warriors in January.

Now I guess I will read what ST has written. I just logged on and saw that ST had just posted. I went to the end of the blog, and lo and behold, there was the possibility of being number one. So quick like a swift, I put on no. 1. And voila! I finally got to be number one. This must be my lucky day. Too bad I am not in Vegas…..

  10. letsgowarriors October 4, 2011 7:53 am

is there a scout bowl this week?

  11. haka October 4, 2011 7:55 am

    That’s pretty funny.

  14. Midnight October 4, 2011 7:59 am

Hi Ajoe, and the sweet LizKauai! Liz, I hope your throat problem has cleared up by now.

  15. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 7:59 am

What’s interesting is that despite all of these redshirts and grayshirts, the Warriors still had 18 freshmen on the 64-player travel roster.

    This is a young team.

  16. papajoe2 October 4, 2011 8:02 am

    top 20??

  17. Slugger October 4, 2011 8:03 am

Glad there’s no practice this morning since it’s raining pretty good right now. Hope it’s not this wet tomorrow morning.

    The slugs are happy…

  23. Stretch October 4, 2011 8:11 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Thanks Slugger for donating the shirt.

Was going through the list and was thinking, there are a lot of guys who are redshirting, grayshirting or delaying enrollment. As ST mentioned, we already have a young team. I wonder how this affects recruiting this year.

  24. Old Diver October 4, 2011 8:11 am

(Junior Alexis, defensive tackle — The plan was for Alexis to join UH as a grayshirt in January. But in the last week of July, Miami sneaked in, and made an offer. Alexis went there before UH could make a counter-offer to bring him in for training camp.)

    ST,

Can you please explain what this means? Did Miami offer more than a scholarship? What more could UH offer besides a scholarship?

  25. Midnight October 4, 2011 8:11 am

Hey, and you know we found an ukulele group over here. They play haole songs, mostly. Barbara has picked up her ukulele and is practicing in earnest. We joined the group for Xmas concerts at several church places. We will begin practicing Xmas songs for five weeks next month. There is a kanikapila group forming October 18th – we’ll see how that goes. I wish I had a sweet voice and could play bass like Ajoe!

  26. Midnight October 4, 2011 8:13 am

Missed you too, koakane! Happy birthday to Nalani and McTruck!

  27. postmanke October 4, 2011 8:14 am

Can you post the commits for 2012 class? think we need to remind the people handling the contracts the severity of prolonging Mack’s contract extension..

  36. tommui October 4, 2011 8:22 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I’m open. Throw me the darn shirt.

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to say hello to ST, SLUGGER et al yesterday. I was at the lunch (anything for a free lunch!) yesterday attending the seminar of gift giving prior to the lunch.

ST – thanks for the report. Glad to see the numbers of linemen.

As an aside, this was the first Na Koa lunch that I was able to attend.

Last year, I had this long-standing lunch with a dear friend who passed on in December. We had lunch every Monday and Friday for over some 40 years!

  37. d1shima October 4, 2011 8:26 am

    tommui,

    You are a great friend.

  38. d1shima October 4, 2011 8:27 am

    Errands!

  39. mctruck October 4, 2011 8:29 am

    wuz yesterday, 3rd, ladat……but as o.k.

    How u guys do dat??

    …..tuvm, DPK; d1shima.

  40. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 8:31 am

    Old Diver:

UH’s offer to Alexis meant that he would have to either be a part-time student this fall or not attend at all while waiting to go on scholarship in January. UH’s thinking was that it is deep with defensive tackles this year. By grayshirting, Alexis would not start his eligibility clock until January.

But Miami swooped in, giving him the idea he could play immediately.

If UH had known that, it would have countered — it had one initial scholarship to give — and let Alexis redshirt this year. No way he was going to play this year because of the depth at d-tackle.

  41. mctruck October 4, 2011 8:31 am

    O!!! I C……last item posted on ST’s remarks….tanks, ST!!!

  42. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 8:32 am

UH actually is expanding its recruiting reach this year, and is going to areas it never has gone before. The next couple of months are going to be interesting.

  43. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 8:33 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!!!

Woo Hoo…Midnight…Awesome…Hello to you and the Mrs…..We miss having you here and joing together with myself, A-Joe, your Mrs., and Aunty Diana to sing Hanalei Moon at the T-gates….among other songs… 🙂 Hope you guys can get back here one day during the season….

Good report on the class…and like ST, Stretch, and others have been saying…this is a young team that can go far….

  44. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 8:33 am

    BTW….

  47. Slugger October 4, 2011 8:35 am

    Hi, tommui!

We did say Hi at the lunch as I was walking to the front to check out the green of the football helmet. (It is closer to the “Dark Room” nail polish I got last year…) I remember seeing you at lunch with your friend at Happy Day once.

  48. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 8:35 am

    Oh..and also…

    Happy Birthday Nalani and McTruck!

  49. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 8:36 am

Graves, Godfrey and Higgins are going to be key to recruiting.

Players want to play with good players.

  54. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 8:38 am

I remember once how the Fullerton coach said Al Noga played like he was from another planet.

I told that to Noga, who said: Yeah, I’m from Planet Kalihi.

  55. koakane October 4, 2011 8:39 am

  56. Slugger October 4, 2011 8:40 am

    midnight,

Good for you playing with an ‘ukulele group. Do you have the “He Mele Aloha” songbook? Try to get one that is spiral-bound as it sits open when you are using it.

Have you & the Mrs. gone to any other football games where you are?

  57. merv October 4, 2011 8:44 am

    Aloha Y’all!

Looks like a good class coming in. I want to congratulation my Warrior friends on the win over Louisiana Tech. I got to see them live while I was in Mississippi for their game with Mississippi State. They took State to overtime in Starkville. And that 17 year old quarterback was impressive.

I didn’t see the Hawaii game but I saw the score and the Warriors blew them off their own field. Very impressive.

Good luck on the rest of the season.

  58. Old Diver October 4, 2011 8:45 am

    #40

    Thanks

  59. kalani October 4, 2011 8:46 am

#49 Also don’t forget Shutter who is the highest rated hs QB recruit we have on the roster.

  60. Midnight October 4, 2011 8:47 am

Slugger: Yeah, we have the He Mele Aloha songbook. No, we have not gone to any of the football games here. We have not adopted any teams here. Especially not Dallas! That would run a couple of hundred dollars per ticket. I don’t like to fight the crowds here. I don’t mind if it is Hawaii, but the others, I don’t care. I follow SMU for obvious reasons, and I was happy when they beat TCU.

  61. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 8:47 am

    Thanks, Kalani.

  62. Couch potato October 4, 2011 8:51 am

what positions are the coaches looking to recruit whilst on the mainland and other areas where they have never been before?

i like the speed off the edges and gaps by the elephants.

  63. Couch potato October 4, 2011 8:59 am

what happened to the iPhone 5? was hoping for a new look. lose money.

Holy Smokes! I’m double covered! Throw it to someone else!!

  67. letsgowarriors October 4, 2011 9:04 am

UH might be deep at DT this year, but they wont be next year and 2013. IMO, we should have signed a DT in last year’s class to redshirt this year, in addition to Friel.

2012 – Hanohano, Correa, Matagiese, Samia, Friel, +1

    2013 – Matagiese, Samia, Friel, ???, ???

right now they will be banking on someone from the 2012 class to play DT in 2013 as a redshirt frosh.

  68. Ipu Man October 4, 2011 9:11 am

    Tsai, #54 FUNNY!

    I’m from Planet Kalihi…

Al Noga should make a tee shirt with that.

I always wanted his tee back then and thought UH could

have made lots of moolah by marketing it then.

    What’s Mr. Noga doing nowadays?

  69. Bowwar October 4, 2011 9:14 am

I’m open. Throw me the darn shirt.

Seems like we need alot of work in our next recruiting class getting some OL and DL candidates.

  70. haka October 4, 2011 9:17 am

RE: IMO, we should have signed a DT in last year’s class to redshirt this year, in addition to Friel.

    #40 ST on Alexis

But Miami swooped in, giving him the idea he could play immediately.

If UH had known that, it would have countered — it had one initial scholarship to give — and let Alexis redshirt this year. No way he was going to play this year because of the depth at d-tackle.

  71. letsgowarriors October 4, 2011 9:19 am

    ???

im just saying i think UH coaches are 1 year behind on the recruiting lots of times. we should have got DTs last year, not this year. JMO tho.

  72. cheepono October 4, 2011 9:21 am

why are the coaches obsessed with “saving players’s” eligibility?

as an executive, ceo, or president… having that kind of foresight is great but in football you don’t play to win tomorrow, you play to win today.

the coaching staff planned on greyshirting scott harding, but because he decided to enroll early and take his own initiative to be here in hawaii, he is. the dude is our starting punt returner and a key contributor on special teams NOW. i don’t understand the purpose of saving players if they can help us win TODAY.

  73. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 9:21 am

At LaTech’s Bulldog store in the stadium, they sell replica jerseys of past LaTech players, like Rattay and Moats.

    Couldn’t UH do that?

Instead of just numbers, couldn’t it have jerseys with the names of Colt, Bess, Owens, Chang, Noga, Sapolu, etc.?

  74. Bowwar October 4, 2011 9:23 am

I bet there are a few good Aussie and Kiwi rugby players that would make excellent defensive linemen…Maybe Harding can check his connections.

Was Junior Alexis from Compton? I remember a BIG CA high schooler holding a news conference last year and saying he was coming to UH as a greyshirt…Was that Alexis?

  75. haka October 4, 2011 9:23 am

    letsgowarriors,

Yeah, I guess it’s a tough choice. You recruit who you think fits into your system. If no one fits that description, but you have a need, do you still just sign someone anyway?

  76. Bowwar October 4, 2011 9:25 am

Is Alexis playing in games at Miami??

  77. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 9:27 am

UH has spent the past couple of years looking for ways to evenly distribute the classes so it’s not in a position where 1) It has to recruit six for a position, and 2) it gets caught in the JC cycle.

They wanted to hold up on Harding because of the glut of slotbacks. (Amadi was initially going to challenge for playing time.)

Now when UH brings in JC players, it tries to make sure there’s some flexibility. For instance, Mike Edwards, Craig Cofer and Tavita Woodard each had three years to play three seasons. Daley is a three-for-two guy. While they like London Sapolu, he was a two-for-two guy.

  78. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 4, 2011 9:28 am

I’m open. Throw me the darn shirt.

A TRIP BACK IN TIME: Many of the people who regularly post comments here write about future seasons and positions which need to be filled because of graduation. How accurate have their predictions been over time? Right now, some people are predicting what will happen in 2013. What was predicted two seasons ago about 2011 and how accurate have they been in terms of addressing what positions needed to be filled?

Another set of questions – what is the average length of tenure of head coaches in the AQ leagues? How many (head) coaches in theseleagues have been fired over the past three seasons? How many have voluntarily moved to other schools? Retired?

  79. TChahng October 4, 2011 9:29 am

    ST,

I know of an entrepreneurial custom tailor in Songtan, Korea, that UH could contract with to produce replica jerseys of past Warriors. 😉

  80. letsgowarriors October 4, 2011 9:29 am

not too keep questioning the UH coaches, but we are a little deep at the elephant position.

    Daley – JR, but redshirting

    Art Laurel – Soph

    Taimatuia – Frosh

so Laurel and Daley are basically the same class, w Taimatiua 1 class behind them. i like all 3. maybe one of them can move to BUCK or DE.

  81. letsgowarriors October 4, 2011 9:31 am

hard decision i guess. Laurel was kind of an unknown. Taimatuia was coming off a foot injury. so u get Daley from the JC level.

  82. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 4, 2011 9:31 am

Stephen – mahalo for answering some of my questions.

  83. Couch potato October 4, 2011 9:32 am

getting o-line, lb’s, db’s, receivers, qb’s, were pretty accurate predictions.

  84. NaKoaMike October 4, 2011 9:39 am

The 10/3/11 Na Koa Lunch Report is now up:

    http://www.nakoa.org/2011/10/10311-lunch-report/

  85. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 9:39 am

    Re: Alexis

He must be redshirting. His name does not appear in any of the participation charts.

  86. Bowwar October 4, 2011 9:41 am

Actually, I think they also need to find a BIG TIME wide receiver who can stretch the field…someone who is at least 6’3″ and can run a sub-4.4 40.

  87. Bowwar October 4, 2011 9:43 am

ST-If so, then Alexis truly didn’t improve his stock…Too bad, as we could use a wide-body in the DL line for the future. We will need a “space-eater” in the DL once Hanohano and Correa graduate.

  88. Kaimuki Kid October 4, 2011 9:43 am

    Hey Merv,

Thanks for stopping by… How’s the weather in Georgia these days… Nice hearing from you

  89. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 9:44 am

Well, what happens if the U gets heavily sanctioned after the NCAA investigation is completed? I haven’t heard anything about that since the story broke and some starters were suspended, like Jacquory (sp?) Harris, for the first game…

Not sure if the NCAA finished up there investigation or not but if the U gets heavily sanctioned then where does that leave Mr. Alexis??? He has to be thinking if he made the right decision or not correct??

  90. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 9:45 am

    Aloha Merv….Hope all is well….

  91. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 9:45 am

But again, no sense crying over spilled milk. Mr. Alexis chose his path….so be it…we move on.

  92. haka October 4, 2011 9:47 am

    Mahalo NaKoaMike!

“Twice Iosefa was tackled by the Bulldog’s vaunted linebacker, and the defender had to leave the field after both tackles.”

ST, Isn’t this the same guy who hit Greg Alexander? #44 Cole I think?

  93. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 9:48 am

    Bowwar:

UH is going after some pret-ty big d-lineman.

No doubt Alexis would have been good for the Warriors (and, conversely, the Warriors would have been good for Alexis).

But, hey, that’s life. Warriors can move on, and Alexis has a scholarship.

  94. RedZone October 4, 2011 9:49 am

    ST what about Samson Anguay?

  95. al October 4, 2011 9:50 am

    happy birthday nalani and mctruck!

  96. al October 4, 2011 9:51 am

letsgowarriors…good to see you out here. are you still up north?

  97. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 9:52 am

If UH gets some of the players it is pursuing, UH fans will be pleased.

But there’s a lot more recruiting time left, and Washington is keeping an eye on UH’s list.

  98. al October 4, 2011 9:52 am

looks like we’ll need some mlb candidates right quick as well.

  99. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 9:53 am

Samson Anguay started jogging. He’ll be fine. He should be good to go for spring ball.

And that was another factor in Harding decision. Anguay was supposed to be UH’s starting punt returner. But he got hurt during unsupervised drills, then had ACL surgery.

  100. NaKoaPack October 4, 2011 9:54 am

I’m open. Throw me the darn shirt.

  101. al October 4, 2011 9:54 am

speed is important. we need more speed.

  102. letsgowarriors October 4, 2011 9:55 am

    yes sir.

  103. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 9:55 am

Not sure what UH’s scholarship count is going to be. It is supposed to be losing 21 seniors, but not all were on scholarship.

    Then there are redshirts.

    Then there’s Stump Godfrey.

    And Jeremy Higgins.

And I think Mack said Matagiese is going on scholie.

  104. NaKoaPack October 4, 2011 9:56 am

Coach was great at the luncheon yesterday – everyone should try to come Monday’s after a game!! Go Warriors! Go Na Koa!

Happy Birfday to Nalani and mctruck!!!!

  109. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2011 10:02 am

I think Stutzmann and Bright need to switch places.

  110. al October 4, 2011 10:02 am

st, aren’t the redshirts accounted for. perhaps you mean the other red as in greyshirts?

i think we’ll be down to 18 or so scholies for 2013 and whom ever accepts a greyshirt. or perhaps creative rostering will free up more slots.

  111. al October 4, 2011 10:05 am

i was thinking that sampson should go inside as well. billy ray has done a very good job and is a very good slotback as long as folks don’t compare him with salas during his senior year.

billy ray has that stutzmann mentality, that being smart and tough.

  112. LizKauai October 4, 2011 10:05 am

no, got work. wish i could go though.

i think stutz should move outside too. X position is closer to the sidelines lol

  114. HEINEKEN October 4, 2011 10:06 am

ST do you have any info if Tigi Hill still interested in returning to UH after his JC eligibility is complete?

  115. al October 4, 2011 10:08 am

waiting for ben memea in three years.

hopefully he’ll still have the fire to play football after being away so long. the toughest part of being away for three years will be keeping the embers burning to get on the football field.

still, he would be a welcome addition.

  116. Couch potato October 4, 2011 10:09 am

get some nice looking d-linemen in our own backyard. hopefully Coach Mack has his satellite surveillance on those big bodies. class of 2013 and 2014 looking good locally.

  117. al October 4, 2011 10:11 am

saw that reeve koehler on waialae avenue the other day. he is a very large person. he must tip the scales at 285lbs and is all of 6’3″ with not much “abura”. only a junior at that.

if tradition holds true and momma gets her way, then kamalei correa will become the fourth correa to don the warrior black n green.

i remember her stating that all my sons are warriors.

    got to love that woman.

  120. merv October 4, 2011 10:17 am

Things are going well down our way, the weather is beautiful, cool mornings and warm afternoons. It was 39 degrees two mornings this week but in the mid 80’s now. The best news is UGA has a winning record for the first time in over a year and our high school teams in Burke County are both ranked in the top 5 in the state.

Good luck in the WAC this year. I will try to keep up with the Warrior Beat and check in from time to time.

  121. RedZone October 4, 2011 10:17 am

I would like to see Sampson at the slot position. He plays big and is quick. JJ used to take quick over size at the slot. Separation is the goal.

  122. al October 4, 2011 10:18 am

side note…saw haku correa the day of his surgery. really felt for this guy as his face showed the frustration.

could he still apply for medical redshirt?

I think Stutzmann and Bright need to switch places.

    BINGO!

  125. Buffoman October 4, 2011 10:22 am

I think they have to check Bright’s sleeve length, especially when they send him over the middle. I could swear that his arms get shorter in heavy traffic. That little guy Sampson should also be measured as his arms seem longer and may need a new “supporter” as he seems to have no fear… and an announcer said he’s like 160 pounds?! Bright could be spectacular, but it’s what’s in his head that seems to be holding him back.

Will they start tackling classes during this week off? If these guys can get their wrap up technique squared away not only will it help us, but if they are aspiring to play on the next level, given the poor tackling we’ve seen in that BIG league, our guys may stand out as being fundamentally sound.

  126. d1shima October 4, 2011 10:22 am

    Aloha merv!

  127. haka October 4, 2011 10:26 am

I am not so sure Bright has the quicks or the jukes to get that immediate separation the slots need on the inside.

  128. Duster October 4, 2011 10:29 am

Has the NCAA imposed any sanctions on the University of Miami football program relating to the Shapiro scandal yet? If sanctions are imposed which affect his status as a scholarship athlete there (at a minimum, sanctions resulting in a significant reduction of scholarships), maybe Junior Alexis can transfer to UH without having to sit a year.

Just a thought. I like having stout DTs here and believe that he would have fit in nicely in the succession plan at that position.

  129. d1shima October 4, 2011 10:30 am

    Stephen Tsai:

    October 4th, 2011 at 8:32 am

UH actually is expanding its recruiting reach this year, and is going to areas it never has gone before. The next couple of months are going to be interesting.

Tuioti will be recruiting in Ohio, Kansas, Arizona and Los Angeles. Smith will be recruiting in Texas and California.

    Happy Hunting!

  131. RedZone October 4, 2011 10:32 am

  132. RedZone October 4, 2011 10:34 am

UH also needs a couple of DEs. Bookends who wear blue and gold would be nice to have.

  133. Couch potato October 4, 2011 10:39 am

    filipino defensive ends?

  134. 808Bowler October 4, 2011 10:48 am

Now that would be intresting. Bright and stutzman switching places. The idea of a huge slotback. Whoa…….

  135. Buffoman October 4, 2011 10:58 am

    #134

But will Bright be brave enough to go over the middle as Salas and Pilares, Bess and Owens did? He has not impressed me over the middle and slots have to be able to do that.

  136. madeinhawaii October 4, 2011 11:00 am

    Redzone,

If that’s the case, maybe we should turn Iosefa into a part-time slot.. he doesn’t need to juke to throw his defender off.. just run right over him when the defender tries to jam him. From slot, he can move into a half-back position prior to the snap… and as a slot, if he catches a ball with a full head of steam… I pity the fool…

Well, there’s finally news from Missouri. According to the twitter feed from the KC Star’s Mike DeArmond, Missouri has designated its chancellor Brady Deaton to look for home for Missouri “outside the Big 12”. He also says Deaton will step down as president of the Big 12 board of directors. It appears that Missouri is in fact SEC bound.

re: Air Force to Big East.

According to those covering Rutgers football, Air Force is a “remote” possibility to the Big East.

Hopefully AF has come to their senses and realized that eating a steak today isn’t worth being homeless tomorrow.

We need to have Boise and AF realize that if they stick with the MWC, the conference is looking GREAT for AQ status and at worst the premiere mid-major football program that will secure an at-large BCS bid every year.

  184. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2011 3:03 pm

    DPK,

I am thinking next week. How about you?

I am interested to see our place kicking practice. Either Tomey is telling the guy to not kick it out into the endzone so we can stop them inside the 20 (which isn’t working because the guy isn’t kicking inside the 20 to begin with) or the guy can’t kick it that far.

    To the Powers that Be:

Get Mack his contract extension or we won’t get any recruits!

  190. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 3:35 pm

#188 Bowwar….Yep…Seems like they are simply having protection issues for some reason and I don’t know why? or what the problem is? I thought the first time it happened, there were personnel problems (e.g. the wrong people on the field)….but it’s happened 3 times now where guys came in untouched…so not sure.

  191. wafan October 4, 2011 3:36 pm

  192. (Jesse) James October 4, 2011 3:38 pm

#183 IWWTHM… We’ve been discussing that issue since the season opener. It seems like the kickers can’t get it into the endzone….a lot of other college kickers can do it, why can’t ours??? I know we have to work with what we got but can we ever find a kicker who can boot one out of the end zone. I mean, we give up field position often on kickoffs….or so it seems to me. Maybe I’m wrong.

FGs and extra pts are an adventure, hold your breathe time. Whether it’s formational or personnel Tomey’s got to fix it.

Regarding the 52 yard FG against Latech. Pure Tomey. He probably felt with the time and score this was the right situation to show Hadden the coaches believed he would make it. It was a confidence building move that backfired.

  204. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2011 4:20 pm

    #203,

What has to be frustrating for the players/coaches/fans is that every week they talk about needing to get better on special teams, better kick protection etc. but every week is has not gotten any better.

  205. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 4, 2011 4:23 pm

    Mack on Da Animals now.

Said that personal foul penalties have gone from 18 his first year, 7 his 2nd and 5 last year.

I really like this. It shows that the Mack & Co. take these penalties seriously.

UH special teams need work on the the line blocking. But so far they haven’t had a kickoff or punt taken to the house by the opponents and not many long returns allowed ?

  226. A-House October 4, 2011 6:31 pm

Watching the replays ‘n all, could not see how B Leonard got decked. Any one knows what happened?

and that LaTech player who removed his helmet – why was he not penalized and/or ejected from the game? is this not the rule in college football? or, is it because play was “dead” and therefore rule unenforceable?

so many dang rules w/ exceptions!!!!!!!!!!

  227. A-House October 4, 2011 6:35 pm

me thinks that Hadden just no mo the leg to kick da ball far – if kicking short, well, it’s SHORT — way 2 short!

now, if kick is 2 da 10 yard line and special team can tackle runner around the 12 yrd line – then dats guud – won’t hold me breath on dat one fo shuwa.

  228. A-House October 4, 2011 6:38 pm

OK, gotta get ready for Baek Dong Su – channel 4 at 1945 hours!

this one really confusing – trying to put all da characters in place, but every time I tink ai got it, some “semi-main” character dies or a main character does something out of da ordinary for him/she.

wish I can buy this series cause I gottas go back to da start to get da “driff”.

  230. Slugger October 4, 2011 6:55 pm

    A-House,

Don’t think the hit on Brett Leonard is on the film from the broadcast. It was on the film from the (team’s?) game cameras. It was a hit after the whistle, I think. But, you won’t see it on the TV broadcast replay. You had to have come to the Na Koa lunch.

    hawaiiabod,

    Hello all you fans.

So the Warriors kickoff and the opponent receives the ball around the 15 yard line and say they average 18 yards a return…then they start possession at the 33 yard line. Could be worse but could be better. Main thing is that the D stops them and the O gets the ball.

Always going have something to correct. Don’t think the coaches aren’t trying their darnedest. I’m sure they put in the work but things happen. That’s just how it is.

At least they aren’t doing a Romo. Bwaha

  249. el burro sabio October 4, 2011 10:31 pm

Mack said on the TV show that they were kicking short to keep Lyle Fitte from making the return. It sure worked when LaTech tried to hand the ball to Fitte and it led to Tank’s TD.

  250. el burro sabio October 4, 2011 10:36 pm

Another way to look at this, if the Warriors were not scoring points, no one would notice how deep the kickoffs are.

After 2100, so am tossing this “free play” impression out…

Apple announced “Siri” yesterday (voice recognition and dictation software for iPhone 4S). It is not that surprising–after all, we see people talking and giving instructions to computers since before the original Star Trek series.

…and voice recognition software was available in the mid-90’s (and kinda worked…mostly), along with the Apple “Vision” video of the early 1990’s showing someone talking, researching, and scheduling his work day on computer that connected wirelessly to something that looked like a 60″ LCD today.

Old stuff… but what surprises me is the SIZE of the computer today. Yes, smart phones are computers. The visions of the 1990’s have been fulfilled and has suddenly risen like a technological tsunami in the last two years. I may jhave blinked and missed part of it. 😯

The Siri info and video at: http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri.html
