Cheer leader

jamieSmith

Last night, the Stan Sheriff Center rocked.

The student section rolled.

Jamie Smith, a self-styled student coordinator, seized the lead in this rock-and-roll revival.

This season, there have been retro themes for Rainbow Warrior basketball games. The zaniness of the past  Manoa good times — think Bowzos — has been revived, in large part to Smith.

Smith is responsible for the witty on-campus advertisements of upcoming theme nights, with players,  in full costume, serving as models. In the arena, there is Smith, at the front of the student section coordinating the cheers. It helps that the team plays with energy. It helps that fans have embraced the enthusiasm. (Speedo Man is the new Rubberband Man.) And it helps that Smith has an all-in approach to putting motions into his promotions.

    Go Warriors!

  3. Kevin February 8, 2013 7:34 am

Just for that Jamie Smith should be honorable mention in the Circle of Honor!

Looked like the arena was jammin all night!

    Well done!

A full student section makes all the difference in the world.

  4. rage777 February 8, 2013 7:34 am

Did he tie dye his own shirt, or can you buy those?

  5. masatoshi-san February 8, 2013 7:35 am

damn, the rainbow warriors CRUSHED long beach state last night. that was impressive.

  6. laulau head February 8, 2013 7:38 am

Right on Jaime and the Manoa Maniacs! Can you make sure to bring it on over to Aloha Stadium too?

    BEAT USC!!

  7. Kevin February 8, 2013 7:38 am

Speedo man 1, 2, and 3 stopped by the softball stadium after the bball game and helped!

As soon as they walked in, Sharla Kliebenstein knocked off a 2 run RBI to edge out a 2-0 win in that first game!

Mahalo also to new AD Ben Jay for stopping by before the basketball game. He had several UH officials with him and they appeared to be paying close CLOSE attention to the “details” of the softball stadium. Then, Mr. Jay returned following the bball game and stayed to the end to congratulate Coach Coolen on win #800. Must have been 11:00 pm by then.

Kaia Parnaby is all Aces. hellacious walk to strike out ratio.

  9. gobows February 8, 2013 7:45 am

heard da Gov showed up at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium before heading to the Sheriff…he may have commented something about needing a new/better venue for Wahine Softball.

  10. papajoe2 February 8, 2013 7:45 am

    top10?

  11. Bowwar February 8, 2013 7:46 am

Good to see the positive energy coming from the Mens & Women’s Basketball and our Wahine Softball teams…Now, if we can only change that grumpy old man in football and get positive energy there, we may have a better team!

  12. Bowwar February 8, 2013 7:48 am

By the way, is Coach Arnold’s contract up for renewal??? If so, I think Jay needs to get on it and secure him for awhile, as we need him to continual to develop our BB program.

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid February 8, 2013 7:51 am

Top Twenny! Let the good times roll! Thank you Mr. Smith!

Last night at the Sheriff would have been a good venue to bring in potential Warrior recruits! The place was rockin’ really good. But the all time MBB has to be against Kansas with AC and Alika where the whole arena was filled to the gills and the noise level was so much my Dad had to turn off his hearing aid.

  18. gobows February 8, 2013 8:08 am

Mr Honolulu_1 was also at the softball game…

  19. Kekoa February 8, 2013 8:09 am

    Way to represent Kevin!

The spotlight on the the Wahine program you, Pomai, Ralph & Slugger have put in place is outstanding! The new AD is finding out how much spirit is ripe ‘n ready for the lower campus sports programs.

Those Tsaiko’s who contributed to raising funds to help the SoftBows, are also to be congratulated for their much needed financial support.

    Let’s keep it going!

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO BASKETBOWS!

    GO TSAIKO’S!

    GO MANOA MANIAC’S!

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

The 60s tie dye shirts worn by the team during warm ups reminded me of the Aloha print uniforms that the Fab Five wore in their heyday. Wouldn’t that be a neat retro theme and have them be honorary captains for a MBB game.

  21. Haleakala February 8, 2013 8:15 am

That was quite a first half of the men’s basketball team last night. But I recall that I was at a UH game about 40 years ago against Florida State. Florida State was highly rated nationally but UH sprinted ahead by a score of about 30 to 10. Then the coach for FS pulled his team off the floor complaining that the officiating was not fair.

The first half of the game last night reminded me of the Florida State game. No controversy about the officiating however unlike the games years ago when we used local referees.

We got emails from campus center activities board inviting us to make our own tie-dye t-shirts.

The shirts were provided for free and were meant for the game.

    Good fun!

adding congrats to the warrior and wahine teams on their winning sweep yesterday. keep it going.

also cheering to the manoa maniacs for rocking the stanley.

morning yu’all come on down still more UH athletic events today.

  27. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2013 8:20 am

I remember when Moose Stubing used to ref. During timeouts, we used to call him over and ask him for draft tips for our fantasy baseball teams.

Then I had the misfortune of accidentally walking into the ref’s room and seeing a nekked Moose. Some images scar you for life.

  28. A-House February 8, 2013 8:21 am

After a player commits to a school, is it necessary that the player “decomit” before signing with another school or can heshe just sign a LOI and fax it to another school?

  29. PONO February 8, 2013 8:22 am

Is it just me or does Schroeder look and moves like a 45 year old man.

  30. A-House February 8, 2013 8:23 am

Congrats to the football, softball, wahine basketball, and scoccer coaches for a job well done this recruiting year!!!!

Just awesome to see Coach Nagamine draw in the top local talent

  32. gobows February 8, 2013 8:26 am

academic eligibility to become more stringent in 2016…prompting some players to academically redshirt as a freshman. 15% of current student-athletes would either be ineligible or would have to redshirt their freshman year.

are you nuts? clearly he moves much more like a 44 y/o.

  35. PONO February 8, 2013 8:33 am

Sorry I was being a little dramatic by saying 45 y/o. 44 is much more accurate. Haha. Congrats to Coolen. Quite a milestone. You must be doing something right to rack up that many victories.

  36. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2013 8:38 am

It’s a still picture so he’s not moving at all.

  40. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2013 8:57 am

I’m sure he moves faster than anyone here.

  41. NotNasti February 8, 2013 9:02 am

Imagine what Schroeder will look like when he’s 45. You cannot tell by his picture if he’s moving or not. I’ve seen him play enough times to be able to state with certainty that he moves at the same speed that he does while he’s standing still.

  42. Kevin February 8, 2013 9:04 am

    Stephen Tsai Says:

Nope. Show me a centipede and I will run the 40 in 4 flat.

  43. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2013 9:07 am

  45. Bigislandkurt February 8, 2013 9:13 am

Some of us got deceptive speed. Especially if includes a dash to ox tails, buffets and other food-filled tables.

    Happy Friday all.

  46. Haleakala February 8, 2013 9:13 am

    Dave:

I’m surprised that I had the score right. That shows my memory isn’t as bad as I had thought.

That reminds me when my wife told me about five years ago that I should get my hearing checked. So I went to the eye, nose and ear doctor and he put me on a sound machine to check my hearing. After looking at the results, he said my hearing was better than his, and he was a young guy.

So I went home but told my wife that the doctor said my hearing wasn’t that good but that I didn’t need a hearing aid. So now I always have an excuse when she tells me something and I didn’t catch it. Don’t tell her.

  47. Kevin February 8, 2013 9:17 am

    Dumbest comparisons sports fans make:

-A high school team could beat them.

    -My grandma could tackle better.

  48. Wes'side Warrior February 8, 2013 9:18 am

    Howzit, Gang!

Gratz again to our student-athletes, for their outstanding performances yesterday! Also a beeeeeeg mahalo to all the students and fans for coming out of the woorwork and showing up at the games! Every little bit helps! Of course, winning cures most everything, but the student-athletes need our support as well. The two go “hand-in-hand”… which, by the way, is the title of the ’88 Olympics song (that was held in Korea).

Also a beeeeeeg gratz to Coach Coolen on that Milestone 800! Keep it going, Coach!

As far as seeing movement in people’s pics… maybe they got the Harry Potter-type photos. How else to judge a person’s speed, otherwise?

    Kevin… just don’t go to Lahaina…

    “… the mangos are sweet

But the centipede he crawls all over your feet!”

  49. rage777 February 8, 2013 9:26 am

The thing that I hate sportswriters do is when they say an athlete makes so much for every snap/touchdown pass/basket/etc. I remember when people use to say Michael Jordan made $10,000 for every basket (just an example). They don’t take into account all the time the athletes spend training, practicing, etc.

Another thing sportswriters do is say (in preseason), this is the best the team has ever looked. Then the team doesn’t win as much as expected, or doesn’t look very good. Or they say the team is really deep at this position, then when the starter goes down all of a sudden the position is thin.

  50. al February 8, 2013 9:34 am

bik…this is true. to this day no one has broken dpk’s mad dash record to the buffet line at camellia’s.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

And a great big congrats to the Men’s basketball team; the Wahine basketball team; the great recruiting for women’ soccer and not only the Wahine softballers, but to Pomai, Kevin and Slugger!

I remember that Florida State game. It was a short evening! My wife and I used to climb over the fence separating McKinley High and HIC/Blaisdell to get to the games. Now I’m lucky and just spry enough to get over the side of the bathtub!

  52. clyde February 8, 2013 9:38 am

@49. I don’t have a problem with writers making such statements; it’s part of their job. I do take issue with (anonymous) posters making degrading comments about 18- 22-year-old student athletes, particularly those associated with UH or Hawaii, in general. Thanks Stephen, for trying to stem the flow.

  53. al February 8, 2013 9:38 am

cpngratulations to bob coolen on his 800th.

can’t wait for him to top 1,000 wins then the university of hawaii may have an exclusive claim to fame for being the only university with three legendary coaches who have had 1,000 wins in their career, all at one institution.

  54. d1shima February 8, 2013 9:39 am

    Great Morning All!

Terrific night for UHAD last night.

Kudos to Jamie Smith and the Manoa Maniacs. Like so many other things, it takes practice and preparation…we got to the Stanley early and saw the students had arrived early and Smith was leading them in a short practice session of the cheers and hand motions. Great job!

….just don’t emulate the Cameron Crazies! That was outta bounds! 👿

  55. al February 8, 2013 9:39 am

we already lay claim to having the only two asian (japanese) 1,000 win coaches.

  56. d1shima February 8, 2013 9:42 am

wasn’t the UH football team “deep” on the DL last year.

seems like every time a men’s team at the UH is predicted to finish high, they end up being middle of the pack in conference.

  60. JV February 8, 2013 9:50 am

RE 29. are you kidding I don’t know any 45 years old in that good a shape. Maybe Miano.

Miano is 50. He just tells people he’s 45.

  62. papajoe2 February 8, 2013 9:51 am

30-10 game. If I remember correctly, the Florida coach got 2 techincals leading to the 30 points was ejected, then pulled his team.

  63. Stephen Tsai February 8, 2013 9:52 am

But, anyway, back to the main point: He’s still faster than anyone here.

just because an aliens entry visa expires, that doesn’t mean they have to leave the country. As long as they are in status they are good to go. so basically if a person is here on a student visa, as long as they remain a student, they can legally stay in the United States, even after their visa expires.

regarding Jamie Smith, there must be other circumstances as for the reason he will be leaving.

  67. gobows February 8, 2013 10:04 am

to make things a little more clear.

most times an alien doesn’t need a visa to remain in country (with a few exceptions with work visa’s). the visa is needed at time of entry. what is important is the “admitted to” date on the I-94. and for foreign students the I-94 is not given a date, it’s annotated with a “D/S” or duration of status.

gobows: you seem to be up on your immigration law. my wife got her drivers permit last month before she received her green card so they stamped the expiration date as one year from that day. then she received her green card, good for two years, and received her permanent driver’s license yesterday but they matched the expiration date with her permit, next January. shouldn’t the driver’s license be extended to at least the two years that the green card states?

  73. Haleakala February 8, 2013 10:18 am

    Ken:

Thanks for the link to the FS game. It took place in December, 1971. That’s the month that I graduated from UH. It took me more than four years.

The article mentioned John Pennebecker taking the technical free throws. So it must have been the Fab Five that was on the court. It’s good that they beat FS again in a full game.

the issuance of drivers licenses is a state function…I think 1 year for the drivers permit is the norm…but you make a good point, maybe if your wife went back with her permanent resident card, the dmv can update the expiration date of her DL, it should be good for 8 years if she’s 25 or older, 4 years for under 25. I don’t know if the expiration on her permanent resident card makes a difference it’s supposed to be only used as proof of residency. Sounds like an oversight by the DMV.

2 yr expiration…so your wife is a conditional permanent resident…are you newly married?

  95. Former UH Athlete February 8, 2013 11:22 am

al, I too like Schroeder. Very tough kid. It’s pretty amazing he didn’t get seriously injured with all the hits he took every game. He also was not as bad as casual fans bash him for. Really, the knock on him is his arm talent. He’s smart, on several occasions I saw him audible to the correct play, does a decent job of recognizing defenses, and he’s accurate when he has time to throw (which was rare). It’s his arm strength that’s not great and he’s not that mobile.

The big reason for the poor production was the WR corps’ lack of ability to get open, stretch the field and dropped a ton of passes.

However, the WR position was a point of emphasis during recruiting and UH now has 5 WRs coming in and all appear to be upgrades over the returnees except for Stutzman, who must have a really good camp to keep his starting job.

@#92 Haleakala: I happen to work in the same building as Dave “Coco” Mahukona and teased him about the forfeit game…since the fans didn’t get their money’s worth. After an expletive laced explanation…bottom line was the coach was a jack ass.

    FUHA: Good analysis.

The quarterback always gets blamed for a team’s troubles. Might not be his fault but I guess it comes with the position. SS stuck it through all those hits so give him credit.

Hearing about Jaime Smith makes me happy. Hopefully he can do a good job in changing the culture of our student section. I was a Manoa Maniac and in the student section when UH beat Michigan State. I stood up the entire game but there were other students behind us grumbling (i didn’t care). I go to Creighton now as a grad student and it’s very different. The college atmosphere is amazing and ALL of the students stand up the entire game. I hope one day this can be UH too…even though my time as a student is over.

    #98 Dave:

I’m sure Mahukona is right about the coach. But the coach must have had his blood pressure at a dangerous level that night. Imagine his team being nationally ranked and getting loved by everyone, and coming here to play against Hawaii which probably was never ranked before then. And then seeing his team getting smoked out in just a few minutes of play. His team could’t do anything right.

But the best justification was a few nights later when they played again. Hawaii won the second game also. Of course the coach, (was it Durnham), went back to Florida and blamed the biased officiating in the heathen islands.

  109. Haleakala February 8, 2013 11:39 am

  110. NotNasti February 8, 2013 11:41 am

Just having fun with SS and alleged lack of foot speed. Actually 4.7 40 time is pretty good. The amount of gas he took from opposing defenses was due primarily because his willingness to take one for the team. Timmy Chang would have thrown the ball away at the first sight of a pursuer. I like SS. After every hit, he got up and trotted back to huddle. You never saw or heard him blame anyone, even when his o-line had more holes than swiss cheese. Lots of character in that kid. He will do well in whatever career path he chooses.

  111. 89leeslb February 8, 2013 11:49 am

#96 Schroeder was hurt much of the season – did impact his throwing ability and mobility to a certain extent. I know he would have liked to audible more, but the offense was very limited last season. In regards to passing completion percentage there are alot of factors that need to be considered – including the very nature of the pass patterns. There weren’t alot of short passes that help completion percentages. You also have to factor in down and distance.

  114. Haleakala February 8, 2013 12:15 pm

On my guess. It probably doesn’t help Hawaii since the team lost to Illinois even though it was by the slightest of margins. If they won, then it may have helped. But only my thoughts. FWIW.

  116. Buffoman February 8, 2013 12:22 pm

I think the best way to get to the “dance” whichever one, is to just win. At this point, I think we need to win the conference to get the BIG invite and come in second in the conference tournament as worse to be invited to the NIT.

Everything else would be like being asked at a “ticket dance”.

  117. Manoa Mist February 8, 2013 12:33 pm

#52 Clyde. 18 to 22 year olds who play major college sports know the deal – their performances will be judged by fans who may or may not know a thing about the sports they play. These are grown adult men. This ain’t PE or AYSO soccer. Perform or be criticized. Fans pay money to watch these players and fans are entitled to their opinions. Schroeder might be a great person, but he’s lucky he wasn’t killed on the field last season. Many times he was a sitting duck just waiting to get lit up. He wasn’t good enough to play for Duke and he didn’t look last year like he was good enough for Hawaii either. If he don’t like people saying that – even anonymous posters – then he needs to get on the field, play well and shut us all up. Pretty sure that’s why he’s out there practicing right now.

  127. clyde February 8, 2013 1:26 pm

@114: Regarding UH men’s basketball postseason chances. As I understand it, it has two chances, and neither has to do with RPI because the Big West is (particularly this year) a single-berth NCAA conference.

For UH to play in the postseason, it has to (1) finish atop the regular season standings, thereby being guaranteed a spot in the NIT, or (2) win the BW tournament, thereby earning the conference’s berth in the NCAA tournament.

Of course, there are the “other” tournaments — such as the Riley Wallace Invitational — but I think this team is trying to make a run at either the NIT or NCAA.

Men’s basketball team has 9 losses. 4 can be considered good losses, at UNLV, against Miami (Fla), now ranked 8th in the country who beat Duke 90-63. UH lost to Miami by 15.

To Ole Miss in the DHC who is 2nd in the SEC right now, and to Illinois in OT on a lucky 3 pointer. Illinois just be #1 ranked Indiana yesterday. Illinois also won the Maui Invitational and they beat Butler in the championship. They also beat Gonzaga at Gonzaga.

Bad losses, 3, at home against Pepperdine, at home against UC Davis when Corey Hawkis scored 40 points, and at Cal-Poly, a 29 point drubbing.

Decent losses, at UC Irvine and at Long Beach, both by 4 points. Those games went down to the wire. Unless something goes haywire, the Rainbow Warriors should be able to play in some kind of tournament in postseason. They are a good team (B) right now. Finish 19-10 or 20-9 at the end of the regular season they can be considered as a very good team (B+). If they make it to the NIT I would call it an outstanding team (A-). If they win the Big West tournament and make it to the Big Dance I would call it Excellent (A). If they win the first game in the NCAA tournament, that’s an (A+). That has never happened I might add. After that is gravy. To be make it to the Big Dance the team has to be both very good and also lucky, meaning they hit a buzzer beater or the other team misses one. Last night’s flaws in the second half bring the ball upcourt can help Coach Arnold work the players in practice for upcoming games in the future and that should help.

    Good Job Wahine!

  192. Chicken Grease February 8, 2013 11:11 pm

UH sports out to a great start, softball Wahine do well.

No more use of the New Orleans Superdome. Per ESPN, a relay that was supposed to PREVENT a short circuit/blackout? Just let ’em have their voodoo that town. Remember Warriors wore all white? They were simply tempting the juju.

Same ESPN ‘cast . . . too good . . . Coach John Harbrough telling Ray Lewis — once the blackout happened — “we’re gonna win this game. No matter how long it takes.” Lewis responds, “no matter how long it takes,” calmly. Classic Super Bowl dialogue.

Junk week to be a 49er. It’s usually junk to be a 49er, but, even more so. (specifically, Ravens and Warriors kick their respective 49er butt-in-pokey.)

See if we can get to # 200 tonight, yeah? A Grease got post # 500 on 2/6/2013.

  193. Chicken Grease February 8, 2013 11:28 pm

    195.

You fine people gonna make it easy (yasashii in the Japanese, yes?) for a Grease to get to a 200?

  194. Kevin February 8, 2013 11:31 pm

Ricketts has a full load with nursing school.

    Cant miss obligations here.

She does very well balancing nursing school and bball practices and home games.

    One hundred double nine.

  199. Chicken Grease February 8, 2013 11:36 pm

Ni kyaku (that’d be, ahem, # 200 in the Nihongo.)

  200. Chicken Grease February 8, 2013 11:37 pm

Ni hyaku, that is. Not kyaku. Gomen.

  201. Chicken Grease February 8, 2013 11:54 pm

Still remember Wahine softball’s advance with the walk off (ah, the art, the beauty of the walk off) against . . . wasn’t it the ladies of ‘bama? Coach Cool[like that]en was the skipper at the time. Great win, great advance to more champainship play. (which ultimately did in pain [“agony of defeat” in the Greek] for softball Wahine.) Make ’em this year miladies.

As Ricketts is studying nursing, heh, how incidental, no? She will ultimately have to nurse a patient sidelined WITH Rickets, no? She come in the patient’s room, kid who got Rickets look at her nametag, go, “oh, now my problem’s PERSONIFIED? Give the more healthier kids all my Jello way things are going” just saying, fine people.

  205. just saying February 9, 2013 4:25 am

considering how bad the 2012 football losing record was, I think norm chow did a great job of recruiting. hopefully with better players he can turn that into wins, which could lead to even a better recruiting class for 2014.

  206. kapakahi February 9, 2013 4:53 am

Unlike the local Class of 2013 prospect list that had about 20 signing with FBS programs, JMHO that the Class of 2014 only has a handful of top local prospects…..but still alot of fringe prospects (mostly linemen).

  207. wafan February 9, 2013 4:58 am

    Good morning!

  208. wafan February 9, 2013 5:00 am

    Go BasketBows and SoftBows!

  209. d1shima February 9, 2013 5:08 am

    Great Morning All!

    ditto Wafan!

  210. PurpleMaple February 9, 2013 5:19 am

I sure hope Warriors have a winning season this year. With all the talk of “better” players, Chow is backed into a corner. If he doesn’t do well, then its not the players. Right? But wait, another excuse might be “he needs two or three years of good recruiting classes.” Time to get past excuses. Time to see results.

  211. wafan February 9, 2013 5:42 am

    Per 158 . . .

    blah blah blah

  212. Chicken Grease February 9, 2013 6:05 am

Good morning kruzen, G (China), just saying, kapakahi, wafan, d1shima, PurpleMaple!!!

    Gong Xi Fa Cai*

    ___________________________________________________

    * “Happy [Chinese] New Year” in the Chinese language. This English spelling of the greeting is a bit more attuned to the actual Chinese [Chingokugo in the Japanese language]; Kung Hee Fat Choy, which was romanized to assist English speakers.

  213. Buffoman February 9, 2013 6:34 am

I’d like a winning football season, but am more wanting a competitive season where the wins would be terrific but I could take one where we had more losses if we were improved and always competitive in the games. In other words, we did not lose, the other team competed with us and came out ahead.

In year three, the expectations would be different. Changing a philosophy, culture and mechanics does not simply happen when there are so many different moving parts and individual contributors (players). It takes time and I for one would like to give it an opportunity to unfold before passing judgement.

I am a realist in that we are now a generation of instant gratification and for many the expectation is different.

  214. Old School Dave February 9, 2013 6:54 am

I think Norm Chow is well aware that his team needs to produce this season and show improvement in the win column. Another 3-9 season will be totally unacceptable, especially to Coach Chow.

  215. WarriorMojo February 9, 2013 7:31 am

    Re #215 and #216

Agree totally. Plus I’d like to see improvement from game to game, both as a team and for individual players.

  216. Chicken Grease February 9, 2013 7:40 am

Good morning Buffoman and Old School Dave.

Signatures are barely (as are any FAXes) dry on the LOIs, folks. Coaches are still in planning stage as well — they might wanna put certain recruits (present and past) in positions undetermined and unpredicted.

Should get closer to August ‘fore ya’ll start “wishin’” is what the youngsters say nowadays, a Grease believes.

Sometimes this board is just an Orwellianfest of “good job, Coaches” (well . . . think of THE thing you do at your own job; the one thing — or things — that if you DIDN’T do, you’d be shown the door. Recruting is Coaches’ job!), “Coach Chow [better do this, better do that]”, “is it Saturday yet?” (No, it’s not Saturday yet. Fill your week. Think of better recipes to do than that same ol’ charred beef at the tailgate.) . . . and just repeats, repeats, repeats. A Grease want repeats, he just tune in to KPXO, watch original Hawaii 5-0 and Kojak.
