Game Day: Boise State

And the haka is back. The Warriors performed it right before running on the field. Well, almost right before. They had a field-goal contest right after.

* * * * *

Fetaiagogo Fonoti has been added as a game captain.

* * * * *

OK, it’s really warm and muggy at Aloha Stadium.

* * * * *

According to Scott Morifuji, Greg Salas missed the team bus to the game. But he arrived in plenty of time to warm up.

* * * * *

T.J. Taimatuia, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound linebacker from Artesia High in California, said he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. Taimatuia is capable of running 40 yards in 4.7 seconds. His cousin, defensive end David Katina, committed to UH last month.

Welcome to the Warrior Nation, TJ. Restocking and reloading is a good thing.

Esme was fabulous tonight at Gridiron. That mama rocked the stage with her dance moves. “Take me to..Mufitown!”

BTW ST…I love your dance and song routine…it sure was tricky

  12. PowderPuff October 24, 2009 12:48 am

Yup, Ralph. Music was to the song “Funkytown.” That wasn’t the only one, though. Gridiron is such a terrific production.

  13. H (hawaii) October 24, 2009 12:49 am

    isn’t 4.7 /40 slow for a linebacker? Pisa was 4.5

  14. 99club October 24, 2009 1:22 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

6-4 230lb 17- or 18-yr old? There’s a grocery store in CA that’s going to notice a drop in sales.

That’s great news on the pickup. And he’s just going to get bigger and quicker. Welcome to Hawaii T.J.!

  15. al October 24, 2009 1:24 am

ralph, i think he projects as a defensive end.

good to see that we are still in the game…recruiting wise.

  16. al October 24, 2009 1:27 am

i think 4.5 is impressive for a linebacker. thus, he gets drafted in the second round, etc.

  17. al October 24, 2009 1:29 am

hmmmm…95 tackles , 5 sacks in 9 gms last year.

  18. STEELE October 24, 2009 1:37 am

    GO WARRIORS!

  19. Kekoa October 24, 2009 1:58 am

Wow ST…you certainly got your Snoop Doggie recruiting ears on! Now all we have to do is hold our breath that the rest of the UH admin pieces fall in place to lock in these gem stones.

Welcome TJ…welcome to you and cousin David to the Warrior Nation.

  20. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 2:06 am

So Boise St. is starting only ONE senior?………..

Gee, another fun year for Hawaii on the smurf turf 🙁

If they actually make it to a BCS and win, they might be ranked high enough to shoot for a National Championship. They have a much better SOS next year with Oregon St, Wyoming, Virginia Tech @ Fed-ex Field….O_o

  21. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 2:16 am

re: BOISE STATE and MOUNTAIN WEST

So I dont know if any of you have paid attention to Boise’s future schedule….

From 2011-2015 they have scheduled BYU and UTAH, not to mention WYOMING for every single year….Hmmmmm the premier teams from the MWC agreeing to home-home series with BOISE ST. Coincidence? 😛

In prior seasons before any serious talk about Boise St. and MWC…UTAH and BYU would only meet sporadically throughout the schedules. Now it seems as they have it locked in for very long series.

Could this be an experiment of sorts to test the competition as well as how smooth travel, fans, interest for national coverage etc goes when a MWC team plays Boise and if they could fit in? Very very interesting. 🙂

Again, Boise St. (if BCS bound this year) would definitely be doing MWC a favor and vise-versa if they hooked up. MWC needs to fill another slot to make it a perfect 10-team conference.

  22. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 2:21 am

I wonder if any thought was given to rotating 1 or 2 auto-BCS bid every year between the non-BCS conference.

Something like if you win the conference championship and ranked in the top 16 or something you get an automatic BCS berth. 5 non-BCS conferences that would get a shot at a auto-bid every 2-4 years?

Not saying this would make things fair, but I think for the time being that would be kind of cool.

  23. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 2:25 am

    A 6th BCS Bowl:

If the BCS wanted to add one more bowl to its lineup and make it 6 total “big” bowls, which currently existing bowl do you think would be chosen and why?

OR if you would create a new one, what would you name it and where would it be played?

  24. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 2:27 am

    add # 24

you can’t choose the Hawaii Bowl, nor can one of your choices be “play in Hawaii.”

    haha.

re: MWC AQ for BCS Bowl Berth and inclusion of Boise St.

“But “unless there is evidence, concrete evidence, that would say this will get you an automatic bid — not just get you closer but get you or guarantee you — I think we’ll just play on with the current nine (MWC schools),” Thompson says. “There’s cohesiveness. There’s balance, four home games and four road.”

“We’ve run all sorts of models. And there’s no model where a 10th member would guarantee us automatic access.””

The current model does NOT include a possible Boise St. in a BCS, winning, and finishing at or around 4 in the nation (highest for any non-BCS school in history)……

The results of those “models” could very easily change at the end of this season………..

I think there is A LOT more on the line this season than just a rebuilding year for Hawaii, a BCS bowl for Boise/Utah some money for the WAC….this season could really be the catalyst for some major changes.

If Boise’s BCS berth etc pan out this season, and granting them admission to the MWC would give them the AQ, its safe to say they are going to be offered. I haven’t seen the numbers if it plays out that way, but I am pretty sure a BSU addition would give the MWC a high enough ranking for an AQ.

With Sen. Hatch who is a senior member threatening legislation, I think if the BCS were to accept MWC conditionally as a auto-qualifier conference, you wouldn’t hear too much about the BCS being unfair. None of the conferences like Conf-USA etc have been competitive in the top-25 rankings. The BCS in order to continue on with business as usual might very well be willing to give into this.

  29. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 3:47 am

Great, we will need a rush end pretty soon, T.J. fits the bill.

Now coach, how about getting two 6’5, 290#, long armed, quick footed

Locals and the kids from Samoa seem to better interior linemen.

In Sept. I thought a good UNLV team beat a decent UH team.
But neither team has won since then.
UNLV is 2-5 and the head coach would have been fired but UNLV cannot afford to pay his termination fee.
UNLV has a chance today though, they play New Mexico (0-something)
Head coach prospects, send in your aps to the AD.

    economy sucks.
I know that its hard to feel sorry for someone who owns 2 1/2 houses
    but its getting rough.
House 1 is rented out and paying for itself (mostly)
House 2 is halfsies with younger sis and she lives in it and pays the loan
    as a tenant.
They’ve both depreciated 40 pct over the last two years but we manage.
House 3 where I live has dropped about 150k since we bought and make refi almost impossible.
Thing have gotten so bad we may just walk away.

At half time, if the boys are down, tell them this

    Well, boys … I haven’t a thing to say.
Played a great game…all of you. Great game.
    (you try to smile.)
I guess we just can’t expect to win ‘em all.
    (d1 pauses and says quietly.)
I’m going to tell you something I’ve kept to myself for years —
None of you ever knew Rasu Begasu.
It was long before your time.
But you know what a tradition he is at Rainbow Drive inn…
(There is gentle, faraway look in his eyes as he recalls the decimated plate lunches.)
And the last thing he said to me — “Shima,” he said –
“sometime, when the team is up against it — and the
breaks are beating the boys — tell them to go out there
with all they got and win just one for the fat man…
(d1’s eyes become misty and his voice is unsteady as he finishes.)
I don’t know where I’ll be then, Shima”, he said – “but
I’ll know about it – and I’ll be happy.”

Welcome to the Warriors T.J. Taimatuia!

  48. Committed Road Warrior October 24, 2009 4:51 am

    d1,

Have a good time in Salem!

  49. Garret October 24, 2009 4:54 am

The first quarter will be crucial for the Warriors in this game. If things go well, the fans will be loud and into the game and the players will gain confidence. BSU does *not* want UH to hang around in the game and they know that the Warriors will be pumped up to start the game.

If things go poorly to start the game, then the crowd will deflate and some of the emotion will drain from the players. It often happens to teams on a losing streak…so, I hope that the crowd is on time to the game and as loud as possible to help the team get off to a great start! A BSU turnover or a big special teams play in the first quarter would be great.

  50. Bulla October 24, 2009 4:56 am

anybody sitting South End Zone. i think we are in BB, and i hope that is not for the Bad Boyz………told the wife i wanted to sit in the end zone so i could watch our O line and D line perform, and see who did their homework……..:)

  52. Bulla October 24, 2009 4:59 am

    Garret,

i think the first series for UH is critical, either on D or O, they gotta establish ownership of playing in ‘their house’. pivotal moment within the first 2 minutes of the game…………

  53. Bulla October 24, 2009 4:59 am

    CRW,

good morning to you also, my apologies………..

  54. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 5:00 am

  55. Bulla October 24, 2009 5:01 am

    #40 Rasu,

life is rough bro….. next time i’m at camelias for a CC, i’ll think of you, haha. 55+, is that the speed limit?

  56. Bulla October 24, 2009 5:02 am

    rasu,

know what you mean, i tell people all the time, if you’re not laughing enough, put mirrors all over your house and run around naked….if that doesn’t make you laugh, you have no sense of humor.

as the elephant said to the naked man, ‘can you pick up a log with that thing?’

  57. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 5:03 am

I hope we get the ball first, a nice long demoralizing drive of eighty yards
or even a bomb for a TD would work to build confidence

  58. Bulla October 24, 2009 5:03 am

isn’t house values in LV upside down? just curious, as a destination location, we track some demographic information especially with the hotels.

  59. Bulla October 24, 2009 5:04 am

either we score on a nice long, down your throat drive, or if we are on D, would like to see Heun and Blaze make a Boise sandwich and recover ‘THE FUMBLE’

  60. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 5:04 am

Used to run around naked in the house, not so much fun anymore now that Mrs LV bought curtains.

  61. Bulla October 24, 2009 5:05 am

cheaper to use washcloths….easier to clean, not as big as curtains, haha 🙂

  62. Committed Road Warrior October 24, 2009 5:07 am

    Bulla,

    That’s ok.

I agree with the assessments of both Garret and yourself. Though as of recent it’s been taking Boise some time before they get into the groove of things. We might still be in the game at halftime, but my fear is Boise really starting to pull away in the 3rd Q if UH can’t get anything going or can’t sustain good quality play from the first half.

Anywho, off to run my weekend errands. See you all later.

  63. Garret October 24, 2009 5:08 am

    rasu begasu,

If UH wins the toss Mac will defer so that UH gets the ball to start the 3rd quarter. So, my best case scenario is that UH stops BSU’s first drive and then the UH O drives for a TD.

  64. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 5:09 am

    Bulla,
Values on pre-owned homes have tanked.
My first LV house values 13 years
    bought 110,000
    5 years 220,000
    10 years 298,000
    now 154,000
New homes originally selling in the 500k range are down to less than 300k

  65. Garret October 24, 2009 5:11 am

    CRW,

If UH is in the game at halftime, the crowd and players will be at an unbelievable high point to start the second half. UH has nothing to lose and BSU does *not* want UH to hang around in this game and have everyone (especially Moniz) gain confidence.

The counter to that argument is that UH hasn’t exactly done that well in third quarters this year. I don’t want to bring up the exact numbers again because I’m hoping that things change in this game.

  66. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 5:12 am

    Garret,
Prob so, but I prefer the offense first.
    1. Our “O” is just better than our “D” is right now
    2. Better chance os getting a big play to spark the crowd and team

  67. Garret October 24, 2009 5:15 am

Reading over ST’s article on Taimatuia carefully, I notice that ST mentioned that he had strong interest from other schools but ST does not mention other offers. ST always lists the other offers when a commit has them. Maybe Artesia’s struggles have Taimatuia flying under the radar…but if he does pick up offers from teams close to where he lives I hope that the UH coaches have formed a strong bond with him so that he cannot be poached.

  68. Garret October 24, 2009 5:18 am

    rasu begasu,

I agree with you and I always prefer for the Warriors to get the ball first. But Mac made his policy clear and has been consistent in choosing to start the second half with the ball. At home, with the offense moving the ball this season (I think they are #15 in the country in yards on offense), I’d love for the Warriors to get the ball first and get the crowd excited.

I guess I should hope for BSU to win the toss and for them to choose to not start with the ball. But I cannot cheer for BSU to win anything this game, not even the coin toss!

  69. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 5:20 am

anyone know if the game will be on ESPN 360?

  70. bighilofan2 October 24, 2009 5:28 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

woootaahhh!. sounds like a great meet between UH coach and TJ.
hope there is follow throw so the stud don’t bust the line. and we get him and his cousin. Good for us. Yeah!.

    Rasu begasu,

you are really funny. laughed so hard i got misty eyed myself. 😀

  71. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 5:31 am

    BHF2,
You would have found out I was funny in person.
If only you had stopped talking for 15 5 seconds

  72. Garret October 24, 2009 5:32 am

ST mentioned that BSU has been having problems in the red zone this season. They made it to the red zone 32 times this season and scored 19 TDs. I looked it up and they also have 7 FGs. So, they score 82% of the time in the red zone and score TDs about 60% of the time.

UH scores about 63% of the time in the red zone and scores TDs 37% of the time. So, if ST says that the red zone is BSU’s kryptonite, what is the red zone to UH?

  73. Garret October 24, 2009 5:33 am

    rasu begasu,

Yes, the game is on ESPN360 today! It is also on ESPN Gameplan, but if every Gameplan game is on ESPN360, I don’t think I’ll ever get Gameplan again.

  74. bighilofan2 October 24, 2009 5:39 am

  80. Garret October 24, 2009 6:01 am

Idaho Statesman feature article on how there are a lot of backup QBs playing in college football this season.

One thought drove former Boise State backup quarterback B.J. Rhode to prepare like the starter even though he faced the strong possibility that he wouldn’t play a single meaningful down.

“I had to mentally teach myself that they were going to need me,” he said. “My honest thought was, ‘Be ready, because you don’t want to mess this up for everybody.’ “

The Broncos, who have three healthy quarterbacks, have noticed the trend. Junior Mike Coughlin is the backup to starter Kellen Moore.

“Mike’s seeing that. … Obviously that gives some credibility to a guy being prepared,” offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin said.

Rhode posted a 6-0 record as a starter. He started one game when Ryan Dinwiddie was suspended in 2001 and five games when Dinwiddie broke his ankle in 2002 at Arkansas. Rhode threw 11 touchdown passes and five interceptions in 2002.

“He was completely dialed into what we were doing,” said Boise State coach Chris Petersen, who was the offensive coordinator during Rhode’s cameo.

“You want to have the conference championship, because that means bragging rights,” fullback Richie Brockel said.

Before each season, Bronco coaches have a pyramid of team goals — atop it is winning the WAC. Below that is winning a bowl game, then reaching a BCS game, followed by specific goals, such as beating Oregon or Idaho or Hawaii.

“They’re the kind of team every year that doesn’t make mistakes — they make you make the mistakes,” Hawaii receiver Greg Salas said. “I think every program wants to be like that.”

“I think having the trip to Ohio and the trip to Oklahoma have sort of gotten us ready for those long trips and those new atmospheres,” Brockel said.

Of course, the team isn’t using the long trip and the distractions of Hawaii be an excuse.

“We went there and got beat by Colt Brennan, then went back and got beat by Chris Johnson,” safety Jeron Johnson said.

Brennan left UH as the NCAA’s all-time passing touchdowns leader. Johnson set a bowl record with 408 all-purpose yards in the game and made the NFL’s Pro Bowl last season as a rookie with the Tennessee Titans.

“Yeah, they’re pretty good players,” Johnson said. “I’ll give ’em that.”

  82. Garret October 24, 2009 6:09 am

I just saw a stat that BSU is 5-0 against BYU and Utah. Their record against MWC teams might actually be *better* than their record against WAC teams…

    @bhf2

I did a few spreadsheets in my time. I can “volunteer” my services along with Slugger! 🙂

  84. Garret October 24, 2009 6:16 am

One key thing to note is that BSU’s backup QB has *never* played in a game that was close. If Kellen Moore goes out with injury, the Warrior D might be able to make Coughlin make some mistakes.

Harsin likes the way Coughlin has prepared this year. Still, Coughlin never has come off the bench in an emergency situation so nobody knows how he’ll react.

“We aren’t changing anything when he goes in,” Harsin said. “You just cut ’em loose and let them play.”

  86. Stephen Tsai October 24, 2009 7:00 am

I think there was some talk this morning that Boise State’s defense is underrated.
    Yeah, whatever.
The safety is a big-time player, an AA-Freshman last year.
The two corners, particularly Kyle Wilson, are fast. Idaho Statesman guy said they’re legit sub-4.4 players.
And that defensive end is a beast.
And they’re not a swarming defense. I think people like to portray “underrated” defenses that way. They play what looks to be a 4-4-2-1. They’ve got the two linebackers, and then their corners play off, almost at the LB level. Two of the safeties are split wide, like corners, and then they’ve got a third safety playing centerfield.
So as you can see, They can move up the two LBs to create a six-man rush, or keep them home to have seven-man coverage.

I just don’t think that Boise joining the WAC is a good idea. It would make sense if the MWC were a 12-team conference and could have a championship game. But simple math tells you that adding good teams doesn’t enhance a mid-major league. Because somebody has to lose. So, obviously, if you have Boise, TCU, Utah and BYU, three get eliminated as national contenders.
And it still comes down to playing non-conference games.
And Boise is just another Mountain Time Zone team. That’s the least populated of the four Mainland time zones.
Finally, I bet one of the conditions of acceptance would be to make Boise change the color of its turf. People can say it doesn’t have an effect, but, really, why else is it doing it? Oh, you mean to be different. Well, doesn’t that go against Boise’s philosophy of a no-star team? Nobody stands out? Nobody calls attentions? Then why have the most outlandish field?

Fresno has a solid football program, a good history in basketball, and it does very well in softball and baseball.
And it’s a in a meaty media market.

    One last thing:
By adding a 10th MWC team, that makes for an uneven schedule.
How is BYU going to feel when it plays four MWC home games and Boise State plays five?
And if you play nine league games, then does that mean you drop the Division I-AA opponent everybody likes to play each year. Because you can’t have a schedule of nine MWC games, two non-conference games and a Division I-AA opponent.
Meanwhile, Hawaii would have seven league games and six non-league games. UH actually could schedule a second I-AA team. Oh, wait, didn’t that happen before?

  102. Garret October 24, 2009 7:47 am

    ST,

It would not surprise me if San Diego State doesn’t have a D-IA football team in 5 years or less. Their Athletic Department is bleeding money, they have zero fan support, and their school has had its budget cut so badly that they cannot afford to subsidize the Athletic Department much longer. There have already been a couple of studies going around about whether or not they should drop football.

More importantly, it looks like the Chargers will be leaving San Diego. The City of San Diego has already announced that they will be tearing down the football stadium once the Chargers leave it, since the city is in bankruptcy and they can sell off the land for HUGE money and get the tax revenue from the businesses there to balance their budget. SDSU has no money to build a stadium, they have no big budget donors to help them (the guys with money donate to UC-San Diego) and they don’t even have enough land on their campus to build a couple of new classroom buildings they need.

So, a school with no fan support, no budget, and no real leadership that wants to keep football that will probably have no stadium in 5 years…BSU would be a good replacement for SDSU.

  103. Garret October 24, 2009 7:50 am

I’d love it if SDSU joined the WAC! I could get to the games easily and San Diego is a great area for recruiting for UH. However, there is the problem of no stadium, no budget, no big money donors, and so on so it won’t happen.

  111. lava October 24, 2009 8:51 am

It does not matter what conference Boise State is in if Hawaii is in the Big Sky. That would seem to solve some of the problems around here. I’m not advocating the move, but it should be explored because we are increasingly going to get pulled in that direction. We dump the Aloha Stadium, build something closer to campus with less seating since so many subscribe to the cable package (which UH supported), the coaches get less money, the State’s best players still leave the state to play for the mainland but the guys who remain are more competitive (and Hawaii loves a winner), and every year we schedule a PAC-10 opponent as our super bowl. It may be a natural fit in basketball too, since so many island boys are under 6′.

As John Fink loves to say, think about it.

I think it’s 15,000 average home game attendance.

  115. postmanke October 24, 2009 9:19 am

Was flippin channels this morning and the MTN Channel had a segment on the 84 BYU team. They were showing highlights of the UH game that year. BYU came into Honolulu very highly ranked (4th in AP poll) The stadium was packed, that team was charged up and we almost came away with the win. – This is what Garret eluded to earlier.

I am in no way comparing this team to the 84 Warrior team – however, on any given day… you never know..

I just cant conceive the fact that we are 25 point underdogs @ home to another WAC team. – that is hard to swallow..

On another note.. What? a Triple Option team making a run for the BCS!
Fun to watch smash mouth football! Congrats again to Paul Johnson 7-1 and a top ten ranking! And in his 2nd year… WOW! What an adoptable manageable system.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Have fun at the t-gate and the game. Hoping the Warriors find their game and score like the r-n-s was meant to.

Ummm, what’s with all the talk about the Big Sky conference? Isn’t that a step down? No, unless something drastic happens like SoCal falls into the ocean (j/k LoCal Tsaikos), we’re stuck with the WAC like it or not.

Benson danced around the question Pops asked him last night about Bu$$$$$$ U going to the MWC. Honestly, I’ve said this before and I knows he’s an alum, but is he such a wuss, that he allows this talk to go on? Other than football, BSU doesn’t bring much to another conference.

  122. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 10:33 am

    ST,

THose are all good points, but you cannot dismiss how important Boise’s addition would be if they rank high enough and the addition of BSU would give them an Automatic Qualifying “score” that would allows a BCS auto-invite temporarily.

So for the MWC they want TCU to get into a BCS game and having Boise would possibly be a moot point when it comes to the AQ score. But if TCU doesn’t, Fresno brings absolutely nothing in terms of their ranking to help that score. The MWC isn’t going to add just for the sake of adding someone, MWC commissioner has made that quite clear. I think BYU could live with an uneven schedule for a while IF it meant they were a BCS conference until they could successfully get maybe 2 more teams in to fill the gap and make it 12.

I dont think the AQ score is brought down by other teams in your conference who do not place well (hence Big East still qualifies), so if they wanted to solve the uneven schedule they could bring in 3 teams I guess..Boise, Fresno, maybe Rice/Tulsa?

The MWC has that AQ on their mind and are very very serious about it…all reasons aside, if Boise can get u that AQ score….i think thats all that matters.

Utah State may be 1-5, but they lost to Nevada last week by just 3 points.

Today: Utah State 23, La Tech 7
Utah State has 331 yards of offense, La Tech has 132 yards.

I’m glad that the game against Utah State is at Aloha Stadium.

  127. Garret October 24, 2009 11:26 am

Nevada went up 21-0 against Idaho, but Idaho really showed me something to come back on the road against a good team. Shortly before halftime the score is 28-24, Nevada ahead.

  128. labrat October 24, 2009 11:29 am

Paul Johnson has a huge A back 6′ 230 lbs. that averaged 9.4 yards and 2 tds in the win. When he started out at Georgia Southern he was a coach on the defense. His head coach and offensive coordinator was looking for an offense to run and liked the wishbone but knew that it would be a tough offense to pass out of so they went to see guess who? They went to see the Houston Gamblers and Mouse Davis and the run and shoot and came up with the idea to move the 2 runningbacks nearer the line of scrimmage and call them A backs. From that formation they figured out ways to run the option and incorporate other offensives into their system including the run and shoot. When their offensive coordinator left Johnson was asked to take over and the rest is history. Johnson has said that the option most people talk about is only a small part of his offense. He said he only uses it 20 percent or less during a game depending what the opponents defense is doing. He also believes that the defenses are so good today that he needs to have a moblile quarterback who can run the ball.

  129. labrat October 24, 2009 11:36 am

I don’t think Boise going to the MWC will make them a BCS conference unless they get rid of some of the bottom feeders. For those teams it will just be another loss for the season. It will make it more difficult for the top teams to go undefeated. They will be crying foul if a WAC team goes undefeated and goes to a BCS game. They will become the Mountain Weeping Conference.

  130. labrat October 24, 2009 11:50 am

It is good to have someone who can run fast but it is better to have someone who can play fast.

  134. Iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 12:48 pm

    Labrat,

I think the auto-qualifier score only relates to how many teams and how often those teams get into the top 25 in a conference.

That is why big east can say they still qualify as a bcs conference as west Virginia, s. Florida, cincci have been ranked pretty high in the past few years.

A Boise to the moutaun west given ANOTHER top 10 ranking can do nothing but help The MWC in being qualified as a bcs conference.

  135. Garret October 24, 2009 1:31 pm

UH beating BSU could seriously hurt the MWC’s chance to join the BCS and hurt BSU’s chance to leave for the MWC. Any chance for UH to hurt the MWC schools from raiding the WAC again would be great!

Let me see. We heard the Warriors say they did some resurrecting this past week in practice. Maybe with some surprises in store. Players are upbeat. Practices have been spirited. Chancellor Hinshaw paid a visit. And the coaches have been working dutifully.

Noteworthy is that the attitude around the program, namely the shadow of gloom is displaced with optimism as the players and coaches take on Boise State.

In the throes of a four game losing streak the players and coaches are looking up, with their chins up. And this is great.

It is so great, especially as fans reading and seeing this, that I hope it’s auspicious. And the Warrior beat Boise tonight.

Go Warriors. Go Coach Mack. Work together as a team. Let your mental and physical powers merge as one.

  170. NYUH October 24, 2009 5:05 pm

Did that work for UH? Losing 3 but having a defensive win and the ball back?

  171. Colomaohana October 24, 2009 5:05 pm

Howzit, gang! Sorry we missed todays Tgate…..

Besides Mr C working and us having no sitter for the keiki we weren’t planning to bring along, I’ve got 2…not one…TWO, keiki down with what seems to be the flu!

I’ll be here…sipping on my greenies, thinking of you all and praying that Rob25 and A-joe will be yelling for me!

I’ll catch the next one! Eh, is it cloudy and gloomy there too?

  172. madeinhawaii October 24, 2009 5:08 pm

dang… what’s with Taylor and Jackson tonight? Mental errors… drop balls, fumbles… bad judgement. Can’t afford that after our Defense made such a solid stand.

  173. NYUH October 24, 2009 5:10 pm

    Beautiful pass to Salas

Ok, Shane, do your magic. You got one completion.

  193. Garret October 24, 2009 5:52 pm

It looked to me that *both* coaches picked really bad plays to challenge…it was clear that both challenges would fail.

  194. lafoaga October 24, 2009 5:53 pm

    tOO Many mistakes…

  195. UHfan808 October 24, 2009 5:54 pm

Take care Bryant Moniz. Hope all is well.

    Go Shane Austin!!!

  196. Garret October 24, 2009 5:55 pm

If Moniz has a concussion and cannot play next week either (once again a Warrior QB has a concussion the game before a road game at Nevada), and Rausch is out of this game, then if Austin gets hurt does that mean Shutter needs to be ready to go in the game?

Pulling Shutter’s redshirt may be unavoidable.

  197. UHfan808 October 24, 2009 5:55 pm

    Nice catch Greg Salas!

  198. Garret October 24, 2009 5:56 pm

  199. lafoaga October 24, 2009 5:57 pm

    should we try funaki?

  200. Garret October 24, 2009 5:59 pm

Wow, Shane Austin came into the game without having much warmup time and is 5-5 passing in his first 5 D-IA passes.

  201. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 5:59 pm

    Bring in Funaki!

  202. lafoaga October 24, 2009 5:59 pm

  203. Garret October 24, 2009 6:00 pm

If Alex Green can keep running like that, UH doesn’t need to worry about who is at QB.

BSU had their 2nd string DL in the game–they just put in the first string and they stopped Green.

  208. Garret October 24, 2009 6:01 pm

Interesting strategy by BSU. They had their backups in until UH got in the red zone, then they put in their starters and stopped UH.

    Maybe try a QB sneak?

  223. madeinhawaii October 24, 2009 6:16 pm

Those turn overs probably hurt the team more in morale than in points. The Defense was making a statement, the Offense had to respond, not wear them down. Hoo boy… Warriors gotta try to score before the half is over.

  239. postmanke October 24, 2009 6:39 pm

So we get the ball at the start of the 3Q right?

  240. madeinhawaii October 24, 2009 6:39 pm

    vballfan1,

Nothing like the Von Appen years. In every game we see flashes of what can be. Defense came up big a number of time in the first half, but the offense just made too many mental errors. The dropped balls, the fumbles, the interceptions. That’s going to let the air out of the Defense each time.

Just when you get one half of the team going, something happens on the other. BUT injuries like these aren’t what caused the poor performance during the Von Appen years.

  241. vballfan1 October 24, 2009 6:42 pm

Even the first game without the injuries you could tell this was not a good or well coached team barely beat a division 1A school right?

At least I got Wahine volleyball.

  242. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 6:42 pm

I know it, you know it.

This UH team is lacking talent, speed and understanding of the playbook.

We will not win tonite, If you are a true UH fan, look beyond that.

    Go Warriors!

  243. Hawaiiroller October 24, 2009 6:43 pm

predictable. DPK coming to the rescue

what did i say to have regasu say what he said towards me that was so bad?

  245. Matt October 24, 2009 6:44 pm

Too many turnovers again. 4 turnovers=24 Boise points. Two of those turnovers came from offensive leaders (LWJ and Salas). Can’t make that many mistakes and expect to beat anyone let alone a top 5 Boise team (personally I think they are overrated) The defense isn’t playing that bad. Just put in bad positions again and again. The offense was moving down the field until Austin’s first INT in the endzone. For a guy that has never seen a D-1 snap and has not gotten very many reps in practice this season, Austin’s doing alright. Medeiros didn’t run a good route on the first INT. The second one is all on Austin. He didn’t see the Boise player. They players aren’t giving up. They are still playing hard.

  246. wafan October 24, 2009 6:48 pm

O shot itself in the feet.

    D doing a credible job.

  247. lafoaga October 24, 2009 6:48 pm

While definetly a rebuilding year, we still going lose a lot starters esp. on the O-line, Blaze, RJ, Rocky, etc…I do like all the returning receivers, dbs, rbs, and QB for next year. No reason why no can finish strong dis year though eh!

  248. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 6:48 pm

    #246 you said it all

  249. Garret October 24, 2009 6:50 pm

So we get the ball at the start of the 3Q right?

    postmanke,

Yes, UH starts the second half receiving the kickoff.

  250. Konaboy October 24, 2009 6:51 pm

yup turnovers killing us. It’s a bummer to because our D came to play. But with our QB situation in chaos, this is going to be nothing more than a rebuilding type year. It happened during JJ’s tenure and it will happen again. Look for the positives this year and let’s see what this coaching staff can do in their 3rd year. By then their Mack’s recruiting strategy should be showing the fruits of their efforts. Then I will judge his worthiness as our head coach. Until then…..

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  251. Garret October 24, 2009 6:53 pm

All 9 passes that Shane Austin threw were caught–7 by UH, 2 by BSU.

  252. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 6:54 pm

this is the first time I’ve heard the BSU tv crew, they seem to be the best that i’ve heard in the WAC.
as for K5, Pops cracks me up with with his repeated gaffes and outdated glasses, Russell needs to blow his nose.

  253. Garret October 24, 2009 6:54 pm

    Konaboy,

I hate to label this a rebuilding year because normally rebuilding years are when freshmen and sophomores play, but in UH’s case mostly juniors and seniors are playing.

  254. Garret October 24, 2009 6:57 pm

UH is 0-5 in 3rd down conversions in this game…cannot extend drives without 3rd down execution. At least 2 of the 3rd downs were 3rd-and-1.

  255. Konaboy October 24, 2009 6:58 pm

Garret which makes it worse but it’s that kind of year. The play callling with one yard to go was mystifying to say the least.

  256. postmanke October 24, 2009 6:58 pm

Congrats to Kenny Niumatalolo 6-2 and Paul Johnson 7-1 on great wins today. Great achievements thus far in their 2nd year as head coach with their respective teams. Triple Option – what and adoptable and manageable system to run.

  257. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 6:59 pm

If the Warriors would have forfeit this game wouldn’t the final score be 7 – 0?

Wow….. I think when Frazier screwed over J. Jones, he set the Hawaii football program back a decade…….

  258. vballfan1 October 24, 2009 6:59 pm

Garret I agree not a rebuilding year this year. More like a demolition year.
Next year is rebuilding, we lose tons of seniors.

  259. Konaboy October 24, 2009 7:00 pm

Rasa, pappa Lahey gets prgresivley worse each game it seems. I mean he thought a pass was a handoff in the 1st qtr. Time to hang up the headphones I think.

  260. wafan October 24, 2009 7:01 pm

As one who enjoys Warrior Green Kool-aid, this year is going to provide a lot of information and experience for our young Warriors. Next year, though, looks to be very promising!

    rasu begasu,

I agree with you, and I agreed with you about that before the game. However, as long as Mac is UH’s head coach UH will choose to take the ball in the 3rd quarter.

  269. Garret October 24, 2009 7:10 pm

“I’m glad” instead of “I’d glad”

UH’s D stopped BSU again in the red zone…if it wasn’t for the excellent red zone D, the score would be much uglier.

  278. Garret October 24, 2009 7:13 pm

    d1shima,

37-0, and it could be worse by UH stopped BSU 3 times in the red zone.

Moniz is out with a concussion or something.

Austin threw 2 TDs including one in the red zone.

Salas had 2 fumbles, LWJ fumbled in his first touch of the game, and UH just lost another fumble.

  279. postmanke October 24, 2009 7:14 pm

OK 2010 no rebuilding. However, 2011 looks to be a rebuilding year as well. As everyone know’s the receivers are just as important as the QB’s in understanding the Run Shoot. It seems like we will be losing most of the starting receivers in 2011. We better bring in some JC receivers this recruiting year.

  280. Garret October 24, 2009 7:15 pm

44-0…and Titus Young did his third straight shaka TD celebration. Each time he made it more blatant and he finally got a penalty on it.

  283. vballfan1 October 24, 2009 7:16 pm

Well this is just depressing, This team never scores in the 3rd quarter. They have not scored in the 3rd all season long. NO halftime adjustments by Mcmackin, or they just never work.

  284. Garret October 24, 2009 7:16 pm

    postmanke,

New OL in 2010, new WRs in 2011. I think that it is easier to replace WRs than OL, especially because some younger players like Billy Ray will still be around well past 2011.

  288. Garret October 24, 2009 7:18 pm

UH already has several receiver commits, including the two local slot receivers (I think both are 5’8″, so they probably aren’t wideouts).

Instead of recruiting JC WRs, I’d prefer a LOT more DL and OL high school recruits.

  289. Garret October 24, 2009 7:20 pm

After that penalty, BSU is taking out their only senior starter. UH is close to breaking the 3rd quarter scoring drought.

  290. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 7:20 pm

Garret, UH needs to keep it”s local talent at home. Hawaii generates the best football players ever, UH needs to get them, somehow….

  291. Garret October 24, 2009 7:21 pm

1st and 2nd down red zone passes weren’t close to any UH receiver. Maybe 3rd down will do it.

  292. ckl22 October 24, 2009 7:21 pm

Garret: Exactly. We need high school recruits, guys that will be at UH for all 4 years. That way, unlike the JC players, more of a bond is made and team chemistry is more easily attainable.

  293. Garret October 24, 2009 7:22 pm

    SojuNTaegu,

Most of the top local recruits have already given their verbal commits elsewhere. UH offered them all, but…

  294. Garret October 24, 2009 7:22 pm

UH decides to go for it on 4th-and-goal…and gets a delay of game?

  295. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 7:24 pm

Garett, I know. But it would be really cool if UH could put a few years of great football together and could compete with the big schools…

    Guess I am just dreaming……

  296. postmanke October 24, 2009 7:24 pm

    we scored!

  297. UHfan808 October 24, 2009 7:24 pm

  301. Garret October 24, 2009 7:26 pm

JJ pulled the redshirt from his QB recruit in the last recruiting class…and that true freshman played really well. Cayman Shutter seems to be the most prepared of the freshmen…if there are a few more injuries or if UH really wants to rebuild with youth, maybe he’ll end up playing.

We know how first-year QBs struggle in UH’s offense…maybe it would be good to get someone experience this year? That someone might be Moniz, but if he’s out with injury and Rausch is out with injury, maybe it will be a freshman.

  302. Garret October 24, 2009 7:27 pm

UH gets some points in the 3rd quarter! BSU’s center had so many bad snaps it is amazing to me…that center has personally stopped BSU a couple of times this season.

  303. wafan October 24, 2009 7:27 pm

So with the safety is that scoring ratio for 3rd quarters for this season something like 963 – 2?

  304. Garret October 24, 2009 7:28 pm

that should be “stopped BSU a couple of times this game”.

  305. d1島 October 24, 2009 7:28 pm

  311. Garret October 24, 2009 7:32 pm

The play calling has GOT to be faster. Delay of game on 4th-and-goal. Timeout just now because the offense wasn’t ready in time with the play.

  312. Garret October 24, 2009 7:33 pm

    wafan,

Yes, but I’d really like the offense to score in the 3rd quarter.

  313. Garret October 24, 2009 7:34 pm

    Inoke for the first down!

  314. Garret October 24, 2009 7:35 pm

That was a really bad throw by Austin…that was a very easy INT with 2 defenders between Avery and the ball.

    UHFan808,

Too tired to go back thru all the posts….how come you not at the game?

  317. Garret October 24, 2009 7:39 pm

BSU is giving that freshman RB a LOT of carries in his first game of his career.

They just got a receiver the first catch of his career. They are playing a lot of freshmen and UH is playing a lot of juniors and seniors…who is rebuilding?

  318. Da Punchbowl Kid October 24, 2009 7:40 pm

“If the shoe fits, wear it” that should read.

  319. Garret October 24, 2009 7:40 pm

BSU has tried two centers and neither can snap the ball properly. I’ve never seen a bad team, let alone a highly ranked team, with so many QB-C exchange problems.

  320. UHfan808 October 24, 2009 7:41 pm

So we’re in a not so guud fb year.

And our island keeds tinking of leaving to play with our opponents.

If we as fans constantly keep cutting down the team and coaches, who is next to us hearing everything?

    Our keeds of course.

We want more of them to play for our team?

We gotta walk the talk as fans and give them the dream of the potential team ours could be if they stayed to play.

But then therez the question of edumacation.

Anyways jus what I tinking whilst posting while sitting in our Aloha Stadium.

  321. Garret October 24, 2009 7:41 pm

John Estes is much, much better than either BSU center. If the game was closer the center position would make the difference in UH’s favor.

  322. Nani October 24, 2009 7:42 pm

  328. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 7:46 pm

UHFan, why would your kids want to play for a team who doesn’t get national exposure?

I love UH, but we need something to draw in the talent. Like June Jones, he might have been paid, but he did bring the talent.

We need something like that… An investment that makes our kids want to play for UH, and not for USC or Oregon…

  329. Garret October 24, 2009 7:47 pm

Shouldn’t UH try to get some of the reserve receivers some game reps instead of having the starters like Salas get the receptions?

  330. LK October 24, 2009 7:48 pm

What’s up with no-aloha security hassling BHF2 about his “RESPECT” banner?

  332. madeinhawaii October 24, 2009 7:49 pm

    Yay!

  337. Garret October 24, 2009 7:54 pm

At least that improves UH’s red zone stat…even if it was against the reserves like two of the other red zone TDs UH got in a previous game.

  338. Garret October 24, 2009 7:55 pm

For wafan, I’m updating the 3rd quarter scoring stat:

    3rd quarter scoring this season:
    UH 0, Idaho 7
    UH 0, Fresno State 14
    UH 0, La Tech 14
    UH 0, UNLV 7
    UH 0, Washington State 7
    UH 2, BSU 10

Total is now 59-2 against D-IA competition.

So, the trend goes like this:
    2006: +106
    2007: +14
    2008: -56
    2009: -57 (59-2 over 6 games)

  339. Garret October 24, 2009 7:58 pm

I think that it is CRAZY that Kellen Moore is still at QB with the second team offense. They pretty much are just handing the ball off so why not put in the 2nd string QB? I know they have problems with the QB-C exchange, but they aren’t going in the shotgun where they had their biggest problems.

  340. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 7:58 pm

Give credit where it’s due, OTs are holding up very well this game
lateral movement on outside rushes is great and the arms are fully extended.
they are also picking up the bull rushes and the odd lb blitz

  348. Garret October 24, 2009 8:07 pm

I just checked out BSU’s depth chart and it looks like BSU has one center that is a sophomore who didn’t start before and the other center is a freshman. I guess one of those inexperienced guys will figure out how to snap properly and will have the starting job for 2+ seasons.

  349. green eyes October 24, 2009 8:07 pm

this has been painful to watch

  350. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 8:09 pm

  351. Garret October 24, 2009 8:10 pm

UH still throwing to Salas instead of giving another receiver some reps?

  352. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 8:11 pm

UHFan, yes, maybe we need Kevin Costner to come out and level Ewa Beach and build a stadium…. LOL…

  353. green eyes October 24, 2009 8:11 pm

    #351

  354. rasu begasu October 24, 2009 8:11 pm

This was a great game sorta,
OTs played best game all season
    OGs were pretty solid too.
Estes will at least get a cup of coffee on sundays
Austin, though not getting snaps in practice, knows the playbook

  355. Garret October 24, 2009 8:15 pm

    SojuNTaegu,

Impossible to change coaches during the season unless you promote one of the assistants. Mac really needs another year to show what he can do…plus, UH owes him $3.3 million more on his contract after this season and I don’t see how UH can afford that and to pay a new coach.

So, either you can say that Mac deserves more time (hard to fairly judge a coach without waiting for his 4th year) or you can say McClain/Hinshaw gave him a contract that forces UH to give him more time. Either way, the people just demanding a coaching change (they are MUCH louder in other forums) don’t seem to come up with the $3.3 million needed.

The assistant coaches are on year-to-year deals, so there may be a shakeup in the staff after this season. Last year UH got Tormey and Shaw after some assistants left (apparently) voluntarily. This year some assistants have to be worried about their job security after the season…they know that often times the assistants take the fall for a bad season.

  356. postmanke October 24, 2009 8:16 pm

I will tell you the single most biggest thing a recruit, local or not will ask or weigh in when deciding on a school – will I be coached by the coaches for all 4 years? So dont be surprised everyone if Mac get’s a contract extension sometime next year. Dont flip out! it’s a recruiting ploy by the athletic dept to make it seem like the coach will be there for more than 4 years.

The back end of the contract usually has a silly buyout amount just incase things dont workout.

  357. vballfan1 October 24, 2009 8:20 pm

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that Greg McMackin is not a very good head coach. He was better as a defensive cordinator.

  358. Committed Road Warrior October 24, 2009 8:25 pm

Pains me to say it, but:

It wouldn’t surprise me if the turnstile attendance for the next home game (Utah State[?]) dips into the low 20,000’s, especially given the relatively large contingent of bandwagoners as well as some disgruntled season ticket holders who might be looking to dump them or sell them off to someone else.

Nonetheless, it still wouldn’t be as bad as, say, Eastern Michigan, who only managed 1,200 people (in a 30,000 seat stadium) for their game against Ball State today.

  359. expat October 24, 2009 8:27 pm

Ouch ouch ouch. That was pretty painful. But, hey, we are down to the 4th string QB and it is hard to beat anyone giving up 6 turnovers, much less Boise State. The turnovers were the story of the game IMO, and you can’t pin those on coaching. You have to play the cards you are dealt and this has been a tough season keeping personnel healthy, but again, you can’t really coach that. No sacks, right? That is positive.

I can’t believe Peterson kept Moore in the whole game. Not smart risking an injury and not smart to not give his other QBs reps.

  360. wafan October 24, 2009 8:27 pm

    Garret . . .

Thanks for the 3rd quarter data update. I knew it was somewhere around 60-0 at the beginning of this game. But it might as well have been 500-0 the way the defense has been so porous.

This game the defense came seemingly loaded for bear and got shot by their own offensive errors. Too bad and very frustrating!

  361. postmanke October 24, 2009 8:30 pm

Great now we’re mentioned in the same breathe as Eastern Michigan! =)

  362. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 8:30 pm

Garret, thanks for the info… I don’t believe it is actually a player issue, I know that we have great guys playing their hearts out.

I believe that the play calling, and how the players are making mental mistakes like taking the ball out of the endzone after fumbling the ball, is all about the coach.

I like Greg… Maybe we give him a chance?

  363. bighilofan2 October 24, 2009 8:36 pm

Things could be worse. One UCLA player complained about a UCLA coach (Norm Chow) to a high school player UCLA is recruiting…and used a racial epithet about Norm Chow.

A Twitter message sent by UCLA freshman Randall Carroll to a top high school recruit complained about Bruins offensive coordinator Norm Chow and referred to him with a racial epithet.

The post, from the account of OCiAM, dated Oct. 22, referred to the Bruins’ last three games before Saturday and read, “man oregon, stanford and cal should have been easy wins ,, but [expletive] thys [racial slur] norm chow dnt be trustin us ,, so it is what it is.”

  371. labrat October 24, 2009 9:05 pm

I guess it was only me who saw that fake kick coming up after the timeout. What bothered me is that on the special teams play before that one when Boise punted earlier UH had kept some of the d in expecting them to do that. Why did they change it up?

  372. postmanke October 24, 2009 9:07 pm

    Re: 366

I would hold BSU coach Peterson totally accountable for the loss. He came with very talented, hungry team that threw the play book at us!

  373. Garret October 24, 2009 9:18 pm

The only thing worse than the game is that it appears that my 4-year-old has the swine flu. She just woke up and her temperature is 105.8…it was 105 earlier today but went down with medicine, so hopefully it will go down again.

Some $%#@ parents sent their 4-year-old to preschool even though they knew he had flu symptoms. When the school figured that out (on Tuesday, even though he apparently had the flu and was in school on Monday also) they sent the boy home Tuesday afternoon. Then on Wednesday, the parents sent the boy to school again even though he definitely still had the flu! The school sent the boy home pretty early on Wednesday, but I can’t believe that they actually dropped him off at the school and took their time picking him up after the school called them.

Mika started feeling bad last night and her temperature was 102 when she went to bed. Today things were much, much worse. Faith started feeling bad tonight and I hope she is okay tomorrow…worrying about one kid is enough.

I was able to blog to keep my mind off of that because the kids were asleep…but the game sure didn’t help my state of mind! I tried to restrain my posting today because if I went off today I could have been very, very brutal.

Mika woke up and Lori went to take care of her and now Faith just woke up and I have to take care of her. I guess I won’t do an early version of the quote roundup tonight.

The score was horrible and yet (with rose colored glasses) there were some positives. I thought our O-line did a decent job against BSU’s rush and the D-line was OK despite the final score. The Warriors did not hang their heads but fought on against an admittedly superior team.

Six turnovers didn’t help the cause any.

No – I haven’t drunk kool-aid since I was a kid and when I was a kid kool-aid was strictly root-beer with salt! (no water added).

  377. madeinhawaii October 24, 2009 9:30 pm

Geeze Garret, hope your 4 year old gets better quick.

Our Warriors got decimated today. We were out-matched physically and athletically. If I had to lay the blame somewhere, or find the source, I’d have to say it was primarly a failure to recruit the players we needed in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Insofar as 2007 goes, we can understand what happened then.

  378. madeinhawaii October 24, 2009 9:32 pm

I should say.. following the 2005, 6, and 7 seasons.

  379. jm2375 October 24, 2009 9:34 pm

Garret – call your pediatrician now! Don’t wait.

  380. expat October 24, 2009 9:38 pm

    Garret

Keep those kids drugged. 105 .8 is crazy high. Double up tylenol & advil every four to five hours. Don’t mess around with those kind temps. Make sure you keep them hydrated too. Good luck.

  381. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 9:42 pm

    Garret,

I would even go so far as to say take them to the ER….the current treatment is supposedly Tamiflu…important that they take it during the first 24 hours I believe.

In any event I had it as well, it wasn’t AS BAD as the seasonal flu but does affect younger kids and the such differently.

Please please take them in to the ER especially with that fever. Please!

  382. Derek October 24, 2009 9:45 pm

At least I was close. Thought Boise would win 59-13 and score actually ended 54-9. You have to believe your eyes. Hawaii is just a bad football team. The truth hurts. Watching the game it seemed Coach Mac looked lost as if he felt what happened. He had no clue. I saw Rolovich’s face and he looked exasperated. Some observations:
    1) Boise St. coaches outcoached us again…big time. The discipline, execution, play calling, etc. They are very, very well prepared. Coaches are taught to go for the arms and strip the ball from the ball carrier. We could see this many times during the replays on the fumbles. Hawaii calls time out on 4 and 1 to figure out a play to go for the first down. They decide to punt. What is that? I shake my head. When Boise St. players screw up they take them out right away the very next play and the coaches give them an ear full. When Hawaii players make a mistake they let the players play on as if to say “that’s okay, we get em the next play.”
    2) The punting is….just say….I won’t say it.
    3) What gets me is why Funaki is not playing QB. This is a guy who is mature, has had experience, is a Senior, and on scholarship. I feel real sorry for Inoke. He’s a team player, but I just think as a senior he had been put under the bus and that’s what I don’t like. This guy has given this program so much and he deserves more respect than the coaches are getting him. There’s a reason why Austin is a walk-on.
    4) The Boise reserve freshman running back, Kaiserman, carries the ball 11 consecutive times until he gets into the end zone for a touchdown, adding insult to injury to our defense, again.
    5) As bad is our defense is, our offense, or lack of our offense, contributes to our defense getting worse, because we just can’t put the ball into the end zone. The main problem is that our QB is not goot enough. There is nobody like a Colt Brenna who is that accurate and completes passing TD at a high rate, nobody.
    6) The bad thing is the program will suffer from diminishing attendance at the gate. The faithful will still be there, but the faithful are clearly frustrated. It is hard to take when we experienced the good times in recent football seasons.
    7) We have definitely taken a big step backward and in jeopardy of not winning a conference game this year, meaning last place. This is embarrassing for a once proud program. Alas, we are not alone. Teams like Illinois, New Mexico, even San Jose, Wash. St. are suffering.
    8) Now comes Nevada next week. Yikes!!!! It will be very ugly. I predict Nevada will get close to 1000 yards of total offense again Hawaii. Final Score prediction: Nevada 84 Hawaii 10. Still, we will watch the game to its conclusion because it is our team. No matter what, we hope they can win in our mind. That’s in our heart. The head says otherwise.

  383. westsidesview October 24, 2009 9:52 pm

Its going to get nasty in Reno next SAT–the wolfpack will reach 60 unless they start subing in the second quarter like the donks….

UH is genuis for scheduling Charleston Southern next year at home, 4th game of the season following USC, Army (road) and Colorado (road).
That should break up the losing streak and save McCrapens okole from infamy….looking forward to 2013…. and the next great hope.

  387. kama krab October 24, 2009 10:07 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Tough loss but kind of saw it coming. Was hoping for a little better showing and in the first quarter I thought we just might have a chance. But then everything just feel apart. Well the season will just get longer, so just gotta enjoy the good moments that come out of the rest of the season.

  388. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 10:07 pm

What got me peeved the most was how the heck can Boise bring in their 3rd and even 4th string offense in and run the SAME PLAYS UP THE MIDDLE when we stack the box and still manage that last touchdown? I think Peterson was just trying to run out the clock but if we give them the yards his players are going to take it.

I mean you put 7 or 8 guys in the box and you cannot manage to hold the run UP THE MIDDLE? Albeit this has been a sore spot for almost every single game this season. The offensive line blocked and pushed almost as effectively as the 1st string.

I know our defense is young and I am frustrated but what is it that the 3rd and 4th string has over our starting defense when it comes to that basic play? Boise is a real good football team, but are their backups that awesome? I am not as knowledgeable in football as many of guys on here ( i can admit that easily) so what is it that was going wrong?

  389. postmanke October 24, 2009 10:09 pm

  390. Kazz ("Shoji" in Japanese means "1000".) October 24, 2009 10:13 pm

For all those that won money off UH’s problems, I hope you use it to pay your bills that are probably past due as a result of your continued losses in Vegas or your other gambling debts.

People with past due loans or bills shouldn’t be using that money to go to Vegas.

  391. tattoo October 24, 2009 10:15 pm

The club I was at was cheering wildly for Boise State bc they bet on the broncs making the spread.
Mixed group attired in UH gear.
When it comes to personal stakes, knowledgeable fans know a loser…..sad.

  392. SojuNTaegu October 24, 2009 10:15 pm

Thanks for the financial tip Kazz…..

  393. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 10:17 pm

    postmanke,

im also fine with taking the spread offense like Texas with a TE or an AirRaid system with a TE/heavier influence on RB’s. hahaha.

if it ever needs to come to that =P

  394. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 10:31 pm

    Kazz,

For purely entertainment purposes I was a winner tonight. Off course I want Hawaii to win, but whenever you do play for purely entertainment purposes you have to read the writing on the wall and use the head not heart.

And although you may think that gamblers might be in debt and losers etc..I am happy to say that my family enjoys the thrill of Vegas quite often (as many Hawaii people do) and they are all very financially secure. We see it as a form of entertainment, only wager what you can afford to lose. So I wouldn’t say ALL people who played this game are degenerates =P. hahaha

When Peterson was calling off the dogs (4th Q) and we still saw Moore playing. Apparently Coughlin (the back up) got a concussion on the play he was in on and they didnt want to use up Southwicks redshirt.

  397. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 11:45 pm

Even though Boise St. did a lot of 4-rush tonight, our O-Line did a lot better job. That is a improvement that I was very pleased to see. =)

  398. Ralph October 24, 2009 11:49 pm

IWWTHE don’t forget, Lingle and the legislature is taxing all of your winnings, gross, not net, you don’t get to write off losses. LOL I know you are an honest guy, if you paid taxes for all of your family winnings then we have one less furlough day.

  399. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2009 11:57 pm

    Ralph,

Yes yes indeed. We even claim the “use tax” when you buy things online from Amazon which does not charge you tax. No sense in being stupid and trying to hide something that adds up to a few hundred bucks here and there….one thing you learn is the IRS ALWAYS wins…..=)

  400. Slugger October 25, 2009 12:20 am

    Garret,

I hope you’ve taken Mika to the ER. I had the swine flu & my Dr. didn’t prescribe Tamiflu, even though I went in just after 24 hrs. My symptoms lasted a bit over two weeks without it. Please get Mika to the ER, especially with that high of a fever. My fever kept coming back for a week.

    RE: tonight’s GAME:

It’s only a GAME. This loss is not as bad as having someone you know die. The team feels way more frustrated and disappointed in this game than you do. I’ll keep supporting these kids/young men/my homies.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  402. Mad Dog October 25, 2009 12:55 am

How far have we sunk in a year and a half!
From the Sugar Bowl to a bottom feeder.
From the perfect season to an embarrassing, Von Appen nightmare.
From a hard hitting defense to a marshmallow pushover.
From defensive speed on the outside to dust eating chasers.
From a crisp run and shoot to a confused, directionless semblance of an attack.
From red zone equals TD to red zone equals confusion and uncertainty.
From a twelve play two minute offense to a six play exercise in futility.
    From physical superiority to pushovers.
From exploiting the opponent’s weaknesses to simply running what we think we can do.
From foresight and anticipation to mental lapses.

Reasons for our downfall, there are many and most of them are correct.

Solutions. They must come from the top.

  403. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2009 1:05 am

Garret- keep the fever down manually too by placing cool cloths on her head and base of the neck. Keep the brain cooler than 104 if possible. Sudden spikes can cause convulsions too.

Get to the doctor asap. Praying for you now.

    Aloha and nitey nite !

  404. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 25, 2009 1:13 am

With all the injuries, the assistant coaching shake ups etc, I am looking at this season as one to get the next year class and their backups game ready.

I have no shame to admit this year will end on a bad note and we may find even winning 1 more game difficult. But you know at this point in the season it can’t be helped…even if Bill Belichick were to come coach us. I will look towards the future.

I am all for giving the future players some game time to ready them for our “turn-around year” next year, but also more importantly to give their backups some snaps because we are so injury prone.

I want to be able to judge Mack next season the most honest way possible where things such as a first time starters, a backup, or inexperienced player etc wont be AS MUCH of a factor as it has been this year.

There is HOPE! I Believe! Go Warriors!

  405. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 25, 2009 1:15 am

    Slugger,

I had the Piggy Flu too but it lasted about 5 days…The doctor said he was really surprised because the cases of Pig Flu he saw lasted a lot less than the seasonal flu.

I didn’t go to the doctor until 3 days when the fever wouldn’t break w/o cool showers + tylenol so I did not get Tamiflu either.

  406. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 25, 2009 3:21 am

    ST,

I thought I heard McMacking saying on the 1420 post game interview that Austin hasn’t been getting reps in practice but at least in today’s game he did…

Do you know the reason why Austin hasn’t been getting a fair amount of reps seeing that he is our “second string” backup which usually get a fair amount of reps?

  409. d1島 October 25, 2009 4:44 am

Not much for this fan to do but return home and suck it up for the rest of this season.

    Too many injuries.

It is becoming ever more clear how the lack of focus on recruiting late in the Former Coach’s tenure has come around to hit the team. Mack’s short recruiting blitz in the first few weeks of his era was too little, too late.

Even as a DC, it seems Mack may have had more effective support within his area of responsibility. Now as HC the supporting cast may be stretched thin in terms of the talent/experience to give him enough help to make things work.

It’s good to read that some are saying there is some areas that are improving: fewer stupid penalties; improved OL play. These are things to build on.

Maybe because I’ve been traveling and focused on #2’s team this past 9-10 days I haven’t seen so much but that’s how things appear to me FWIW.

    Good morning everyone!

It was nice seeing everyone at the tailgate last night and sorry I missed ST. I hear I missed him after the game too and the corn chowder. 🙁 Mr kymry was too grumpy and was ready to go home early. So while you were all back at the cabana after the game I was already home watching the news. Did anyone else see Mack on the post game press conference? Also heard on the news last nights loss was the largest point spread loss for uh at home in 30 years. yikes! And Nevada had 70 points in yesterdays game and that’s who we play sat right? Yikes again!
I still support and believe but i’m frustrated too like everyone else is.
The injuries are non stop. Do we know how moniz is? I didn’t even see him go out but found out from ST’s post on twitter right after.
Anyway it was great seeing you all just wish we had done better. Too sad!

  418. vballfan1 October 25, 2009 6:08 am

Stop blaming Injuries ( every team goes through them) and when the backups perform up to task you never hear about them.
Stop blaming the previous coachs recruiting. Is it JJ’s fault that we are starting walk ons over Scholarship players????
We have alot of junior college scholarship players who are benchwarmers. That’s just the current coaches recruiting mistakes in my opinion. Junior college recruits should all make immediate impacts because you only get them for two years.

The problem with the Warriors is not a lack of talent in my opinion.
It is a lack of motivation, discipline and game adjustments from the coaching staff. UC Davis gave Boise a bigger fight ( on the road) than the Warriors did. There is no way UC Davis has more talent than the Warriors.

The coaches need to really earn their Paychecks the rest of the way, so far they are not.

  419. LizKauai (iPhone) October 25, 2009 6:51 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Stop blaming, PERIOD!
    How’s that?
At the end of the day, there are many things that can be experienced in this world and our reaction to the outcome of a college football game, or even a whole season is at best a reflection of our own priorities and maturity as fans.
Have a blessed day and please pray for the helath and protection of our Ohana and beyond

    Go Warriors!

this is a blog, and a blog is where one can voice an opinion.
you don’t like it, don’t read it.

my heart was on uh to win, but my wallet was on boise.

how about we have dave shoji coach football or be assistant of some sort. different sport but hey, his style of coaching seems to have a great win record. it doesn’t matter who plays for him (incoming freshmen or veteran senior), he still wins or have a great record each season.

if hawaii had a proffesional team, all the good local bruddahs would stay home.

uh football is like a wave or spurt, good season, bad season.
    i getting sea sick.

    Well said lizk!

Has anyone heard how moniz is?

  422. mctruck October 25, 2009 6:58 am

It can happen to the best……I watched the Alabama/Tennesse game and the Florida/MSU games yesterday and the offenses struggled to put points on the board; defenses showed the way.

Florida most of all is not the Forida of the past several years…..which just to show what happens when a program loses just but a few key players. Texas might be the only one who can generate points with consistancy in the top five teams.

  423. Garret October 25, 2009 7:01 am

Lori is really sick now…fever, body ache, extremely sore throat, etc. Faith feels okay but her fever has been getting worse. Mika is at least not 105.8 now–she was 102 this morning. I had a sore throat and body aches since Saturday but I’m just ignoring it now so that Lori can take a nap.

With my wife and kids sick, last night and this morning sure wasn’t fun for me…but we’ll get through this.

  424. mctruck October 25, 2009 7:07 am

So far, the verbal commits for 2010 has got me anxcious for the future of our Warrior program, which includes many of our 2009 recruits in the mix.

Sorry to hear about the injury to Moniz….I’ve suffered my share of Concussions and know the feeling; get well Mr. Moniz, my prayers are with your recovery and safe keeping.

Wow! lau lau…..this is a chanllenging time for the entire team indeed; hang in there men cause it can only make you guys better players to stand up to the challenge’s ahead. GO WARRIORS!!!

  427. What? October 25, 2009 7:10 am

    I just have one question…
I knew UH was going to loose.
I think everyone knew that UH was going to loose.
Of course we had to hope but… I think we all knew.
    My question…
On Boise’s last drive, they ran the ball every time, we knew they were going to run it, they knew they were going to run it and they were still getting 5-10 yards a pop. And that was with 2nd and 3rd string players. Are we really that bad? They were basically begging us to stop them and we still couldn’t.
I think that was the saddest part of the whole game. Their 2nd and 3rd string guys, taking it too us and we have no answer for it.
Have we really fallen so far so fast? … sorry that was too questions. may bad.

  428. no cry! October 25, 2009 7:10 am

boise us #4, UH is not top 10, do the math.

  431. no cry! October 25, 2009 7:18 am

sad part is boise used 2nd n 3rd string, they delivered and was anxious to play.

The boys played hard and the coaches did their best. We lost to the #4 team in the country so nothing to be ashamed of. If Alabama/LSU/USC or Texas were #4, we wouldn’t feel this bad. No matter the name of the school, they are still the #4 best team in the country. We’ll be more competitive against Nevada as Shane will have more time with the first team offense.

The best part was seeing everyone at the tailgate.

    Esme and out……………

  438. Garret October 25, 2009 8:30 am

I’m impressed with that freshman RB for BSU who had 122 yards and a TD last night. The most impressive thing to me was that he never gave up despite all the things he had to go through to play and that he was prepared to play in the game despite never carrying the football in a college game and not playing a game for nearly 3 years!

BSU pulled their starter Avery pretty early in the game. Their second string RB made the trip but was injured. Their third string RB missed the trip due to a death in the family. So, the freshman ended up playing a LOT.

It is especially impressive that he was prepared to play when you consider that his concussion problem made him sit out the first half of the season and even made him miss a good part of fall camp. This was after sitting out two years due to a grayshirt and a redshirt. He couldn’t even practice for so long and was buried in the depth chart but he still go himself ready to play this week.

Many of the backups for the Warriors will need to play during the second half of the season. They might not have gotten many practice reps thus far this season and might not have gotten a chance to play in many games, but they need to prepare themselves like that RB. Every non senior on the team will spend the rest of this season auditioning for spots on the depth chart for next year, hopefully giving their all in every practice and every game rep.

When the game is out of reach, I really hope that the UH coaches put in the reserves next time. I didn’t understand Salas and the rest of the starters on both offense and defense playing in those last few drives. The backups lack game reps and that is a worry for next season…so why not get them game reps late in games like yesterday’s game?

People kept mentioning last night that the starters on D were tired which is why they struggled late in the game. Why were the starters playing instead of giving the backups some experience? Given the injuries and the lack of experience the Warriors have, I would think that the backups could have used the work. This isn’t just hindsight because I was posting this during the game too.

Some people said that rotating in backups would be giving up on the season. But giving the starters some rest might actually help the team, and giving the backups some experience at the end of blowouts (either wins or losses) could be very important when looking at the future.

    no cry!:

this is a blog, and a blog

You’re right. Thanks for speaking up.

Want’s noticeable is that even the professionals are teeing off.

So I agree state your opinions, too.

Listening to 1420 and RK analysts after Boise scored a touchdown against UH defense. He said something like this, “This is D-1 football, not hopscotch.”

    That’s true.

In the other paper the columnists wrote something like this, in jest, “The WAC commissioner, who was in attendance, should have stopped the game.” And goes on to say, “If this were a boxing match it wouldn’t never had been sanctioned.”

    That’s true, too.

Personally, I think UH would probably lose to the Weber and Portland State football teams. That is how far backwards this team is going. In fact I would welcome switching the game w/USC in next year’s opener with a team that UH can be competitive with, like a D-2 opponent.

I think the reason people are venting are similarly reminiscent of movie and restaurant goers when they read reviews stating how great the movie or cuisine is and it turns out in being a flop.

I mean if someone says they make the best cake in town and it turns out in being the worst cake in town there is going to be an unfavorable reaction.

Before the season started the coaches, including Coach Mack, were circulating these observations about this team–the wide receivers are the fastest (if not the greatest UH has ever had), the offensive line is one of the best, team speed is the fastest UH has ever had, special teams will be aggressive, and get this the punter should be the greatest UH has ever had.

    …and we’re not seeing this…and…

Before the season started, prematurely, the coaches elevated and exalted the players. Some of his players it seemed Coach Mack anointed as being the best he’s seen at any level, including the punter.

Along the way Coach Mack characterized this team as a very special group. Team chemistry and leadership was great he often said.

So after all this buildup and windup by Coach Mack before the season started you believed the team would be performing at a higher level.

You expected in seeing a well oiled machine. And it’s been a let down that we haven’t.What we’re seeing instead is big plume of white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes.

Coach Mack’s over glorification of his players, team and coaches are probably the reasons as to why people are venting venomously when what he professed isn’t what the fans are seeing on the field.

The boo birds, fans leaving the games early and the malcontent of some of the fans are all reactionary impulses directed solely at Coach Mack’s head coaching internship and his over glorification of his team.

Could this be McMackin’s version of the “Perfect Season”??!!

The Advertiser website and the Hawaii Athletics website both have Billy Ray Stutzmann returning a kick in yesterday’s game. Did he really play yesterday? If he did, they just burned his redshirt. I guess it gets him ready to make a bigger impact next year, but why only now? Why wasn’t he in playing receiver where game time experience will really help him?

good morning tsaiko country and warrior fan

no need say anything about last nites game it speak for itself. I have resolved my issue and can move on with little grief.

want to say this, I agree with bhf2, misguided sometimes, but I see his passion for the university and the team. he blogs, talks with sincerity while always using his own name so we know who it is, he’s a show me no tell me kinda of guy as exhibited by two incidents to make the team better (helped getting the jugs fixed along with gett bikes needed for rehab) so nuff said.

he may speaks loudly but with spirit (no not that kind) so again I say I agree with him on certain issues.

    labrat on # 372,

If we’re talking about the same play (fake punt?), I smelled a rat (no pun intended) too. I saw UH put 2 punt-returners back there & said to myself: why would they set themselves that way when they’re vulnerable to the fake punt…bingo! In that case, I would have to say unfortunately that our own coaches set THEMSELVES up for that one.

I have to give credit to Boise State for sheer execution. They deserve their ranking. Unfortunately for them & the WAC the way the BCS computer rankings are engineered, the deck is stacked against them. They will gradually fall (in the rankings) because the remainder of the schedule as opposed to Cincinatti & TCU will not give them opportunities to rise. Even if for the remainder of the year, all of the poorly-performing members of the WAC (including our team) wre to shift gears & win out, it wouldn’t be enough. They really need some help in someone either upsetting those 2 teams, or someone closing the deal on a couple of the marquis teams (Alabama, Florida, LSU, Texas, etc.

I really wanted (last week) for Florida, Alabama & LSU to go down in flames- – to their credit, they pulled it out as they did this week. Just imagine a different landscape where Cincinatti & Boise were # 2 and # 3.
Would have had the BCS folks in a tizzy. I understand BYU wimped out as well?

Heal up Warriors! We still have a lot of tough games coming up. The team looked good in the 1st quarter, but started beating themselves in the 2nd q. Salas needs to tuck the ball in tighter when he’s fighting for those extra yards. Wrap 2 hands around the ball. The effort is appreciated, but the fumbles gotta stop. Get Inoke in the game! Platoon the qb’s or something from this point on.
    GO WARRIORS!

    koakane and others,

Great job on the tailgate! It was my first, but certainly not my last. Great food, great company, great discussion! It’s a real shame it wasn’t a great game, too.

    Garret,

Totally agree with the need to put in reserves to get experience & see what they can do, esp when the game was out of hand. Incidentally, hope your keiki get well expeditiously.
