Moniz named No. 1 quarterback

UH head coach Greg McMackin today named Bryant Moniz as the Warriors’ No. 1 quarterback. Barring injury, Moniz will start in the Sept. 2 opener against USC.

Last week, the Warriors entered training camp with a top tier of four quarterbacks — Moniz, who started eight games last season; Shane Austin, who started in a road victory over San Jose State in 2009; Brent Rausch, a fifth-year senior who missed all of last season with a broken finger; and second-year freshman David Graves.

McMackin said Moniz clearly established himself ahead of the other candidates.

McMackin said the coaches will wait at least another week before naming the No. 2 quarterback. Until then, in passing drills, for every three plays, Moniz will take two snaps while the other three will rotate for the third snap.

The No.1s:

Offense:

LWO — Rodney Bradley

LSB — Greg Salas

LT — Austin Hansen

LG — Brett Leonard

C — Bronson Tiwanak

RG — Adrian Thomas

RT — Laupepa Letuli

RSB — Kealoha Pilares

RWO — Royce Pollard

QB — Bryant Moniz

RB — Alex Green

Defense:

LE — Liko Satele

LT — Vaughn Meatoga

RT — Haku Correa

RE — Kamalu Umu

SLB — Paipai Falemalu

MLB — George Daily-Lyles

WLB — Corey Paredes

LCB — Lametrius Davis

FS — Mana Silva

SS — Spencer Smith

RCB — Jeramy Bryant

NB — Richard Torres

Colt Brennan, newly signed by the Oakland Raiders,  said he was told he will play in the second half of Thursday’s preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Brennan said the Raiders have crafted a scaled-down version of the offense for him. The Raiders have five quarterbacks on the roster, but two of them of them — Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski — have been unavailable because of injuries.

Brennan earned a contract after doing well in a 30-minute tryout. He said he was welcomed to the Raiders camp by the sound of “Cooooooolt.” He turned to see Samson Satele, his former UH teammate and the Raiders’ starting center.

“He told everyone I was a good guy,” Brennan said of Satele.

Happy birthday to Midnight and Margo.

And belated birthday wishes Liane Yim.

During yesterday’s debate on UH’s open-practice policy, I threw out a situation that I thought was relevant to the debate. What I didn’t consider was that the situation appeared to fit a local photo-journalist. Further, I forgot the context of that person’s recent situation, where he has struggled to gain access to certain sporting events. I still think the topic is worth debate. But I also realize that it probably cast the person in a negative situation, and that was not my intent. The person is a diligent photo-journalist. And while we don’t always agree, he is without question an ethical professional who would  never use his position to cause harm to the subjects he covers. The quality of his character should not be questioned. I apologize.

I remember how a Purdue dlineman tried to get into Colt’s face after a play and without hesitation big ole nasty Samson Satele got right in between Colt and the Purdue guy.

Great news on Colt being given an honest chance.

How does the contract/salary work for him? Does Washington still have to pay him the $455k after cutting him, or does that go away in lieu of the $395k? (I thought his original contract was guaranteed for $1.8m.)

  28. Ipu Man August 9, 2010 10:38 am

btw, Gradowski (?) seems to be the Raiders favorite guy for backup

quarterback. And by using Colt Thursday, maybe they think they can keep Gradowski (and the other injured ones) safe and healthy. So Colt

may be the fall guy for unnecessary “rough and tumble” pre-season games as his salary is not guranteed? But Colt will shine. No fear!

  29. gigi-hawaii August 9, 2010 10:40 am

And we’ll see how it works for Colt…

    From SI’s Peter King:

“Quarterbacks in the NFL need lots of traits to succeed, but none is more important than that last one — accuracy. At the base of it all, that’s why Tom Brady and Drew Brees and Peyton Manning have succeeded. And it’s why JaMarcus Russell, Cade McNown and Kyle Boller didn’t.”

    Rich,

I hope that you are doing well! I’m glad that you are having lunch with Cliff on Thursday. Hopefully we can have a Calf Call at Ono Onos or somewhere else before the season begins.

Only $96,800 of Colt’s $1.8 million contract was guaranteed. Washington doesn’t have to pay him anything after cutting him…and Oakland doesn’t have to pay him any of his contract if they cut him before the season begins. This is from an article in the Advertiser in July 2008:

For all the gloss of a reported $1.8 million, four-year contract and prospects of a first-year salary of $295,000 and escalation to $555,00 on the fourth year, only the signing bonus is assured.

  32. gigi-hawaii August 9, 2010 10:45 am

I left behind my furniture, dishes and pots and pans, my artwork, my TV, even my winter coats!

Friends (who were originally from Hawaii) sold my TV and vacuum cleaner and sent me my hardback books.

Friends because I had no relatives in NYC.

  39. greenthumb August 9, 2010 11:05 am

Good Monday. I wanted to follow up on Garret’s post 39 from yesterday about having a “home game” on neutral territory to help fill up the 2011 season. He mentioned I think the Rose Bowl or the Coliseum, both sound like they would be good showcases for UH to keep top of mind with possible recruits. In terms of dollars, it seems like both locations also would boost ticket sales because of interest by Hawaii fans who live on the Mainland or who are looking to have a vacation with a football game as a bonus.

I would even ask UH to take the additional step of being open to this kind of idea as not a one-off. If we play our cards right, doing these kinds of games, one per season, could be the next-best (totally NCAA-legal) way to have collegiate exhibition games and lay the foundation for international games.

  43. Garret August 9, 2010 11:14 am

    greenthumb,

I was just trying to think out of the box a little for UH to fill the puka in the schedule. You are correct that this is a completely legal way for UH to play in front of recruits and make a little money.

UH gets to invite recruits to be guests at their home games, which is great for the recruits in Hawaii but limited for recruits on the mainland. However, if UH played a game in one of the NFL stadiums or in a venue like the Rose Bowl, UH could invite recruits (legal and free recruiting opportunity!) and UH fans would make an excuse to see a UH game at one of those stadiums.

  44. al August 9, 2010 11:15 am

the loss of bsu on next year’s sched means a loss of a potentially sold out home game in 2011. with that in mind we should be looking at an opponent at home who would provide the same turnstile numbers as well as interests.

would be nice to start the byu series a year earlier at the aloha.

  48. Garret August 9, 2010 11:19 am

    d1shima,

Not only is Klemm doing a great job as an OL coach, he’s turning out to be an amazing recruiter. He’s been able to get recruits out of California that had Pac-10 and Big 12 offers, even after the high-profile recruit he got last year was rejected by admissions. By the way, that recruit is going to have to “settle” for Texas Tech, Tennessee, or some school like UCLA from what I’ve read.

Klemm is definitely on my wish list if Gordy Shaw gets a big offer and decides to leave UH someday.

i suppose that the recruiting wars between hawaii and smu have officially begun when the pony’s offered and accepted the verbal from aussie blake muir who’s scholarship offer seemed to be up in the air.

although we may have flubbed up on this recruit (sigh…again) my only question is; when will the madness end?

again it seems that we don’t even know how many scholies we have left for this year, january’s early transfers, nor this coming fall.

c’mon now between lumpy and the compliance dept/person someone needs to step it up. we won’t arrive, ever, if these issues are always in abeyance.

Happy Birthday Margo…Rich, you mean she turns 21 this year??? That must be why she’s going to Vegas…. 🙂

  58. Garret August 9, 2010 11:28 am

    Al,

JD said that UH made about $700k per home game on average last season (which included BSU). Neutral-site games at NFL stadiums have been paying each team over $1 million for the right matchup.

For playing Oklahoma at Cowboys stadium, BYU got $1 million last season (Oklahoma got $2.5 million). BSU is getting a big payday for playing at the Redskins’ stadium.

Most teams have their schedule filled and they don’t seem to be rushing to fill UH’s puka. Even worse, UH’s opening comes during the conference part of the schedule, so teams aren’t interested dealing with the travel time and jet lag in the middle of their conference schedule. Plus, many conferences are telling teams not to schedule nonconference games except for August and September (UH already filled its schedule there for 2011) because TV will have a role in the conference schedule and they need to have control of the schedule in October/November.

Given all of that, I don’t think that it will be too easy for UH to schedule some big opponent at this late date. To move the BYU game up, BYU would have to cancel one of the games they have scheduled already and then deal with having a hole in their schedule in 2012. What benefit would they get from that?

  59. al August 9, 2010 11:29 am

#48…or we could “make room for daddy”.

it’s been a curious pick on my part when a pass oriented offensive scheme team selected a run oriented oline coach who came from areas that we don’t recruit well in.

  60. Garret August 9, 2010 11:29 am

    Happy Birthday Midnight!

    Al/Garret,

    I tell you guys…Vegas, baby 😎

  63. Garret August 9, 2010 11:32 am

    Al,

Don’t forget how both UH and SMU (and a other schools too) went after Acker (Oregon recruit last season).

I don’t see the Muir case as SMU going after a UH recruit. UH asked a player to grayshirt and UH doesn’t have a scholarship in January. If UH is asking a player to pay his own way, I don’t think that player is a UH recruit…more like an invited walk-on who could earn a scholarship later.

  64. greenthumb August 9, 2010 11:33 am

Garret, re: your 43, I wonder whether it is realistic to think we could have a home game in a pro setting on the Mainland? Talk about boosting UH’s image with recruits and adding to the turnstile count! 🙂

Another upside is that if Hawaii could develop a “home-away-from-home” game as a routine part of the schedule, we would accomplish two other things for the program. One is attracting more regional and national attention for UH. The other is to decrease travel costs, which might lead to attracting opponents who might not “want” to come to Hawaii … also in the longer term showing certain other conferences Hawaii’s marketability.

    al…such big words….abeyance…LOL

  68. Garret August 9, 2010 11:34 am

    d1shima,

I thought about Vegas when I was making the suggestion last night. Unfortunately, I don’t think that the Vegas stadium makes that much money when compared to other stadiums.

Plus, one of the points I’m trying to make is that it would be great for UH to play a game where their recruits are located. UH is *already* playing at UNLV on 9/17 next season, so I don’t see the recruiting benefit for another game in Vegas. Plus, UH fans might split which Vegas game to go to and that would hurt the crowd for UH.

  69. al August 9, 2010 11:35 am

#58…wishful thinking is the heart of my post. of course, this late is not good i understand this. however, the wac schedule will be done by taking the conference play and shortening the number of weeks by one now that bsu will be gone.

i am sure that benson’s office will condense the wac sched to allow either a non-conf game before or after the wac schedule. ideally we can land a bcs team or perhaps a mwc team before or after the wac play.

it is not a scramble for a team just yet (the hawaii exemption could be the bait) and i trust that the wac ad’s and benson have a welll thought out plan.

  70. Stretch August 9, 2010 11:42 am

    Happy Birthday Midnight!!

    Happy Birthday Margo!!

    Good Luck to Colt.

  71. Garret August 9, 2010 11:43 am

    greenthumb,

I don’t know if it is feasible–I think that all depends on the other team that will be involved. I think it would be reasonable for UH to take a smaller cut of the payout (like how BYU took $1 million when Oklahoma got $2.5 million), because the more money that can be offered, the better the matchup is possible.

If it was designated a UH “home” game, then ESPN would have the TV rights. Think that ESPN would like a game with Oregon or Oklahoma or some other high-profile team? Maybe a SEC team wants to play in front of recruits in California? ESPN is paying $8 million or so each week to show second-choice SEC games…they could pay much less than half of that for a neutral-site game.

  72. al August 9, 2010 11:43 am

a birdie, not sure if it was a big or little birdie who hinted that we are not sure of what we have?

we should have a grayshirt come january…however, some important folks were not working on it while the young man was becoming confused and then disillusioned with the whole hawaii thing even though all along his heart was set on waikiki.

and then we are afraid to “pull the trigger”.

i call it the “daniel smith revenge”.

  76. al August 9, 2010 11:45 am

papa leahey would be mad if a home game was played on the mainland.

  77. Garret August 9, 2010 11:46 am

    UH’s 2011 nonconference schedule:

    09/03 Colorado

    09/10 @ Washington

    09/17 @ UNLV

    09/24 UC Davis

    12/03 Oregon State

October 1 and November 26 (the week after UH’s last nonconference game and the week before UH final nonconference game) are games reserved for conference matchups. So, starting the WAC schedule 1 week late or ending it 1 week early does *not* help UH schedule games.

  78. al August 9, 2010 11:46 am

papa leahey has hinted how he missed traveling to all those away games now that k5 borrows a broadcast from sister networks abroad.

kama…every year we should have 25 new scholies. grayshirts, transfers, and the like are also part of the plus or minus, then there’s the 85 limit.

we haven’t experienced any apr issues or sanctions like sjsu or usc.

sure it can be confusing, but, how hard is it to lay it all down on a table and figure out what you have or don’t have?

maybe they can use marbles to number the scholies/recruits? no, wait, marbles would roll off the table and then the confusion continues or did it ever stop. if the dept needs help then jd should

i am sorry if i get heartburn over this subject. but, it happens every year. it is almost (or it is) embarassing to our institution.

  87. al August 9, 2010 12:22 pm

thanks st for announcing the qb.

earlier today this press release by uh (in case you missed it)

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2010/8/6/FB_0806102544.aspx

  88. greenthumb August 9, 2010 12:37 pm

d1, re your #85, we have the $4.95/month sports package Dave Reardon wrote about, so I guess we are grandfathered. 🙂 IIRC, when we signed up for it last year, there were two packages with similar names but *very* different prices (and contents). If you are ordering by phone, might be worthwhile to ask to have an e-mail confirmation.

  89. gigi-hawaii August 9, 2010 12:39 pm

    interesting press release. Thanks, al.

  90. A-House August 9, 2010 12:46 pm

Happy Birfday to Margo and Midnight and hope you all have a great evening/dinner!

  91. A-House August 9, 2010 12:51 pm

For those of you interested in watching the Army and Colorado games on TV, read Dave Reardon’s column in this morning paper.

Seems Ocenaic is offering a $4.95/month charge plus a $2 set up fee which includes the Army and Colorado games – Army via CBS College3 Sports and Coplorado via Fox Coillege Sports Pacific.

Sports Pak package includes NBA, NHL, tennis, racing, and Big 10 network – all for $4.95/month.

But, you must order now!!! Call 643-2337. Cost goes to $60 on 9/1/10.

  92. aka El Padrino August 9, 2010 12:54 pm

    Q-Back Announcement Thought

I guess ‘sorry, brah’ does cover it all

  93. A-House August 9, 2010 12:57 pm

Maybe someday it will come to pass, probably long after I’m gone but still watching, that Hawaii fans at Aloha Stadium will be chanting – makai side with IMUA and mauka side rsponding with HAWAII, followed by IMUA from the South endzone and North endzone responding with HAWAII. Back and forth for 5 reps.

Very simple chant, but very meaningful to Hawaii fans here, on the mainland, and all other places.

  94. SteveM August 9, 2010 1:00 pm

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIDNIGHT !!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARGO !!!

Being in Vegas on your 50th birthday. Yeah!

    That’s where I was on mine… 🙂

…wasn’t that just the other year? 🙁

  95. Ipu Man August 9, 2010 1:06 pm

How about meeting Georgia Tech in San Diego or Seattle?…

    Or Notre Dame? Darn…

  96. Ipu Man August 9, 2010 1:13 pm

Better yet, meet either in the 49er’s candlestick park or Raiders

    Oakland stadium! Cool idea…

  97. Ipu Man August 9, 2010 1:14 pm

    UH Fantasy Football…

  98. A-House August 9, 2010 1:16 pm

Neutral site and big $$$ – good idea and a financial windfall for UH – who puts up the “big bucks?”

    Also, a good recruiting tool!

  99. NCAA August 9, 2010 1:19 pm

    Mr SteveM,

Revealing a woman’s age are you. Tsk Tsk.

  100. Da Punchbowl Kid August 9, 2010 1:26 pm

    Happy Birhtday Margo!

    Same to you, Midnight!

  101. (Jesse) James August 9, 2010 1:32 pm

Also a belated Happy Birthday to Liane Yim….haven’t seen her in a long time…

  102. (Jesse) James August 9, 2010 1:32 pm

    Steve M….Ummm..you mean Margo isn’t 21????

  103. HawaiianTime August 9, 2010 1:35 pm

Any news on how David Graves has been looking in practice? I thought he had a decent shot at getting the #1 spot? He’s considered a 2nd yr Freshman.

  104. (Jesse) James August 9, 2010 1:59 pm

It will be interesting…since Moniz is now the #1 guy it will be interesting who steps up to be #2…..the one good thing about this is that they settled on the #1 guy early…

  105. Kazz August 9, 2010 2:14 pm

That is some considerable size on the interior line. Looks like we can expect some more running than normal.

Also, is it gonna be Haden or Enos?

  106. d1島 August 9, 2010 2:19 pm

    God Faddah,

And now we know QB1 is a Bad Muddah Flowah….

  107. Ipu Man August 9, 2010 2:21 pm

Best three names sure to get ESPN’s attention:

    Center: Tiwanak

(Like knock your head off if you touch me…)

    Defensive Left Tackle: Meatoga

(They’ll probably pronounce it like meat…)

    and SLB — Paipai

    (makes one hungry, no?)

  108. RedZone August 9, 2010 2:22 pm

With the amount of snaps per practice there will be no room for error for the numba 2 spot. I wonder if they will wait a while to pick the numba 2 or slowly eliminate players one by one?

  109. kama krab August 9, 2010 2:25 pm

Just looking at offensive line, if they can gel as a unit, not only will they be able to run more but man I don’t see anybody that can get by these guys. The big question will be though, if they can gel as one and be able to be one cohesive unit. If they can gel watch out. This could be one of the biggest and most talented lines we’ve seen in a long time.

  110. Bulla August 9, 2010 2:25 pm

    howzit Tsaikos…..

#1 QB announced, Hallelujah, now Let’s Do This…d1, no negativity, all positive thoughts with no one headed to the Kool Aid Kooler just yet.

    IMUA WARRIORS…….the clock is ticking……

  111. kama krab August 9, 2010 2:30 pm

    And while where at it,

This could be one of the best offensive units we will see in a while. Could even bring back the Colt era memories.

The Colt Era wasn’t that far in the past but it has felt like centuries.

    Hopefully I’m right.

The potential is definitely there though.

  112. kama krab August 9, 2010 2:34 pm

    Bulla #110,

Kool Aid always taste good but I agree, not time to drink yet. Everything is all based on potential right now. If these boys have the heart and the will to reach those potential’s then we will be in for a very good season. If these boys let things get to there head then we are in for a very long season. It’s all up to the boys under those pads. As I tell my boys at Punahou, if you want it go get it.

    Nuff Sed

  113. madeinhawaii August 9, 2010 2:42 pm

    Today’s magic number is “3”…

    That’s Three … as in..

Three weeks.. three days… and just under three hours to WARRIOR FOOTBALL!!!

  114. RedZone August 9, 2010 2:44 pm

Can’t wait to see UHs wishbone defense.

  115. just blazin August 9, 2010 2:45 pm

So I guess u can miss part of spring ball and do some unmemtionables and still be number 1qb. Gimmie a break.

  116. NCAA August 9, 2010 3:06 pm

Hasn’t there been other former Warriors and even the head coach who did wrong and still were #1 and still coaching?

  117. d1島 August 9, 2010 3:07 pm

    Just win, baby!

  118. RedZone August 9, 2010 3:13 pm

    Time to go forward.

    Pop da Trojans.

  119. maui warrior August 9, 2010 3:23 pm

second chances are needed by everyone………u give him one break

  120. wafan August 9, 2010 3:26 pm

Good to hear they selected the #1 qb quickly. Now the OL has to gel quickly.

    Something good this way comes.

  121. Kekoa August 9, 2010 3:27 pm

Happy Birthday to Margo and Midnite!

    Let’s Go ‘Mo!

  122. BNS August 9, 2010 3:39 pm

    Happy Birthday Midnight!!

    Happy Birthday Margo!!

  123. Kekoa August 9, 2010 3:56 pm

ST ~ I think you have stirred up a hornet’s nest when asking about the Photog yesterday. Unbeknownst to you, there were certain agreements made by UH officials that allowed him to photograph tight shots of certain players (no formations) for publication in the Samoan newspaper.

UH benefits from these shots for recruiting purposes, and have done so for years. By you bringing this up in a negative way, it cast doubt on what he was doing. Did you know that this was his only request for access to the team during the fall camp? He will be on the field during the game, filming both teams. He normally shoots the Polynesian players, and sends his work to the Samoan media.

Careful, as mentioned by someone on the blog yesterday, he won a judgement against an ILH official for something similar.

His son was mentioned in the local television media for bringing respect to the islands for his earning a schollie at USC. Why not UH?…ask the coaches who ‘overlooked’ him. We sure could have used a huge O-lineman who also contributes to the track team at USC.

I don’t know what your reasons are for not getting along with a fellow member of the media, but you asked for comments about this situation, and this is what I know to be the facts.

  124. Ipu Man August 9, 2010 4:00 pm

    Whoooooooooooosssshhhhhhhhh!

Offense and defense, run circles around USC!

    Go Rolo!

    Go Mac!

    Go UH!

  125. Ipu Man August 9, 2010 4:05 pm

    Peace

  126. Kekoa August 9, 2010 4:09 pm

Rajah Dat Ipu Man! I’m trying fo make peace.

  127. Ralph August 9, 2010 4:10 pm

Seems like Miano’s walk on program is paying dividends, more on defense than offense but I think there are at least 8 players who started their career as walk ons on both side of the ball.

  128. chopsueyboy August 9, 2010 4:15 pm

    MIH

    #3

3 days till we see Colt again in black, silver, and white

  129. d1島 August 9, 2010 4:19 pm

    Waipio LL wins again!

Waipio Little League of Waipahu won its second consecutive game Monday at the West Region tournament, beating Mountain Ridge LL of Las Vegas 4-3 to put itself in prime position to reach the semifinals. Nevada fell to 0-3 and left its semifinal hopes hanging by a thread.

  130. d1島 August 9, 2010 4:23 pm

Bye tomw….beat AZ on Wed and should be in Semi-Finals on Friday.

  131. Ralph August 9, 2010 4:23 pm

if you didn’t like playing on BSU blue carpet then you wouldn’t want UH to schedule an away game at Eastern Washington University.

    http://web.ewu.edu/groups/athletics/pages/TurfCam.html

  132. Kekoa August 9, 2010 4:32 pm

    Go Waipio LL!

  133. madeinhawaii August 9, 2010 4:33 pm

I wonder how Koolau Theater did with their showing of Warrior Football? Did they pack the house every game? They should teach some cheers at the theater… then reverse feed some of that onto the Jumbotron at game time – here and away… “Eyes on Hawaii!” IMUA WARRIORS!

  134. Kekoa August 9, 2010 4:35 pm

    D-1 ~

The media always gets tongue-tied when they try to pronounce the place names. Hehehe…

  135. d1島 August 9, 2010 4:41 pm

  138. Bigislandkurt August 9, 2010 5:33 pm

Ok, I just took a double shot of malolo instead of Kool aid. And I’m making a call:

The Offensive Line will not only gel, but go on to have a great year. Pepa is in his “contract year,” got good depth at the guards. And a lot of positive things going on with the youth movement. Austin Hansen is a veteran player who plays smart and tough and both LaCount and Ginlack bring added depth.

Unproven perhaps, but a lot of good parts to work with.

Warriors are back baby. Here we go…..

    ….and I’m gone….>>>>>>>>>

    BIK

  139. Kazz August 9, 2010 6:35 pm

Kool Aid this and Kool Aid that….

Nothing wrong with Kool Aid for fans.

What’s wrong is when jerks stick their ***** in the kool aid jar when people just want a drink.

Yup football and trash talking season IS here.

  140. Kazz August 9, 2010 6:41 pm

Good to see that the o and d are being set up and those deserving of being on the 1st team are getting the majority of reps. Practice makes perfect.

  146. whitey August 9, 2010 7:04 pm

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS To Margo, Midnite, and Liane

  147. whitey August 9, 2010 7:05 pm

Col A House, practice is in full swing and gametime is just around the corner, but the salmon are packed in on POW. What a choice!!!!!!!

  148. whitey August 9, 2010 7:06 pm

And if I get lucky this will be 150

  149. whitey August 9, 2010 7:06 pm

  150. d1島 August 9, 2010 7:11 pm

    Howzit whitey!

  152. whitey August 9, 2010 7:14 pm

I think that we cheer loud when USC is trying for fg or pat, we may have a chance of them missing.

  153. whitey August 9, 2010 7:15 pm

d1, dang got lost coming home, so took a long ride on the spacecraft.

  154. d1島 August 9, 2010 7:16 pm

    😆

    Main ting you made it!

  155. whitey August 9, 2010 7:16 pm

USC strength on offense will be their passing game and their running game is not like previous years.

  156. d1島 August 9, 2010 7:17 pm

Eh! Got my season tickets today in the mail! 😀

  157. whitey August 9, 2010 7:18 pm

and you no going believe, but supposed to be back on the darkside for a birthday party. dang, don’t know how many birthdays they have in 6 months.

  159. whitey August 9, 2010 7:19 pm

d1, will talk to duffer and see if we can at least come for the tg, but no can make promises.

  160. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2010 7:19 pm

    Kekoa:

I’m glad you explained the situation.

I was speaking in general terms. Like I said, if practices are open to everyone, then you can’t restrict anyone, including the parent of an opposing player.

Anyway, I’ve got nothing against the photographer. Hey, it’s not my team. I don’t care who shows up at practice. UH might care, but it has no bearing on me.

  161. whitey August 9, 2010 7:20 pm

d1, no, but they are having sum problems adjusting.

  162. d1島 August 9, 2010 7:21 pm

Will be good to see you both…

  163. whitey August 9, 2010 7:21 pm

  164. d1島 August 9, 2010 7:23 pm

  166. jm2375 August 9, 2010 7:26 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Happy birthday to Midnight and Margo.

    Kekoa – you got mail.

  167. Rich2176 August 9, 2010 7:40 pm

Just got a call from Margo celebrating her B-Day dinner at Prime in Bellagio. Masaboy stops by and next thing she knows, there’s a wonderful “chef’s treat” of Kobe beef appetizer. After dinner, a huge silver platter of not one or two deserts, but three, with “Happy B-Day” written in icing on the platter. Then somehow, the bill never shows up. MASABOY, Margo said she’ll get back at you BIG TIME. Watch your back…lol. Mahalo for making her day extra special.

  168. wafan August 9, 2010 7:46 pm

Looks like Satele still has Colt’s back.

Once a Warrior, always a Warrior!!!

  169. SteveM August 9, 2010 7:53 pm

…a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIANE !!!

  170. wafan August 9, 2010 8:16 pm

Wakamatsu was released by the M’s. The reason was their poor record because of a poorly built roster. Strange. They kept the head office guy who built the roster but fired the guy who had to work with what he was given.

They continue to be the farm club for the Yankees.

    Geez.

  171. OldDiver August 9, 2010 8:17 pm

Just got done checking out the still pictures on the Oakland Raider site. Of the 38 pictures posted Colt was the only QB shown. Clearly Colt is a favorite of the photographer.

  178. Matt August 9, 2010 8:38 pm

I’m glad that Mack/Rolo named a starting QB early in camp. Hopefully, this means that Moniz and the receivers have the necessary time to get on the same page.

  182. whitey August 9, 2010 8:47 pm

d1, you can get plenty of $298 fares with Alaska to Portland and they are good till Nov to go along with your season pass.

  183. whitey August 9, 2010 8:49 pm

the kid was doing pretty good at the Maui Open, but did not see his Sun score.

  184. whitey August 9, 2010 8:49 pm

  185. Slugger August 9, 2010 8:55 pm

  188. Willie August 9, 2010 9:30 pm

Hope Colt finds a home with the Raiders, I hate the Raiders but Colt is such an honest, genuine & generous guy, gotta have a happy medium. Even though he does not have the big bucks like many former Warriors in the NFL, I believe he has been the most generous of the football players. Correct me if I am wrong, the only former athlete that has given more than Colt has been “AC”, at a minimum he contributed $100,000.

Go get um Colt on Thursday, I do not like the Cowboys!

  189. jm2375 August 9, 2010 9:33 pm

  209. WarriorMojo August 9, 2010 10:25 pm

Wanna know what a BAD headline is? I have Google alerts for Colt Brennan news (thanks, Garret!). So I got a hit today with the following, “NFL Notebook: Colt arrested drunk in ditch.” The excerpt from the article states, “The Oakland Raiders signed free-agent quarterback Colt Brennan and could have the former Hawaii star on the field for the exhibition opener….”

In a freaking PANIC I click the link to find, “Indianapolis police arrested Colts defensive lineman John Gill after finding him passed out in a ditch on the side of a road about 4 a.m. Sunday.” I swear I’m gonna sue somebody.

#48…or we could “make room for daddy”.

it’s been a curious pick on my part when a pass oriented offensive scheme team selected a run oriented oline coach who came from areas that we don’t recruit well in.

    Interesting.

  211. al August 9, 2010 10:39 pm

#210…i know a few good litigators.

hahaha, lizk first brought that to attention this morning…got me good too.

  212. al August 9, 2010 10:40 pm

pride….more curious or amusing than interesting don’t you think?

  213. d1島 August 9, 2010 10:46 pm

    😯

    That’s a heck of a story, WM.

  214. Curt August 9, 2010 10:53 pm

    WarriorMojo,

    That’s funny.

  215. Ralph August 9, 2010 11:06 pm

Al that is why coach mac gets a lot of grief, lacks HC experience, decisions made on the run then scratches head. Remember his first OL coach, Brian Smith, very limited coaching experience and no recruiting experience. On potential, UH has the athletes in the trenches now the real coaching begins to have them play at a high level to compete with the best.

  216. Curt August 9, 2010 11:07 pm

I sure hope Colt does well on Thursday. This one day will probably affect his stay with the Raiders.

In college, Colt was one of the most accurate and efficient quarterbacks in history. This was honed over three years in one offensive system, with one premier coach, and with players he was very familiar with. Now, he has a few days to get familiar with a new system, new coaches and new receivers. Do you think he has a challenge? You betcha. Colt, go out and blast those cow pokes to smithereens!

  217. Curt August 9, 2010 11:24 pm

Which brings me back to our beloved Warriors…a message for Coach Rolo:

Your job is not to play offense. Your job is to destroy the enemy. Hit ’em low, hit ’em high, and hit ’em hard. Just smash ’em.

  218. Curt August 9, 2010 11:28 pm

Okay. That’s enough aggression on my part. Betta go sleep it off before I get in a fight. Go Warriors!

  219. niho mano August 9, 2010 11:34 pm

good luck colt!, i will be cheering for you…set your soul on fire and have fun…

  220. papajoe2 August 10, 2010 12:15 am

I just heard from a potential D1 recruit. Although his first choice is to join a family member on the mainland, UH is a close second. He said that UH is the one that is showing him the most interest. Nice to know that they are indeed recruiting and in Hawaii too.

Howdy Y’all! Thanks to all the wonderful Tsaikos for your kind birthday wishes! I was busy on my birthday. I had a BBQ with my neighbors around me on Sunday. That meant a lot of food left over. I invited an Iolani classmate and his wife over on Monday, my birthday, for lunch and mah jong. Remember Slugger, and Myki! I think I was the top winner because I hit a four fan hand – 960 points.

Woke up early this morning at 6am – like usual. Only difference, now I go out and do my Qi Gong, and Tai Chi in the nearby park and take care of the yard. No longer am I able to go to the beach, and boogie board every morning with my Chinese exercises later. Temperatures in the low 100s for the past week, so Barbara and I are indoors for most of the day.

Our hearts are still with the Tsaikos because we love you guys! Love to all!

    Barbara and Midnight.

    no worries.

  237. Ipu Man August 10, 2010 7:20 am

KHNL showing the Saints vs. the Patriots instead of the Raiders/Cowboys??? Is that a local decision? Who is the manager.

    Is he crazy?

  238. kokane™ August 10, 2010 7:37 am

morning gang, anyone going to practice this morning?

  239. kokane™ August 10, 2010 7:39 am

  241. (Jesse) James August 10, 2010 7:47 am

Good morning gang…hope all have a good one today….

  242. Ohana808 August 10, 2010 7:47 am

I’ve been following Jerry McDonald, who does twitter updates on the Raiders practices. http://twitter.com/Jerrymcd. Here are a couple, of many, that he posted from today’s morning practice.

Colt Brennan gorgeous throw right sideline catches Todd Watkins in stride vs. Stanford Routt . . . perfect

about 1 hour ago via PockeTwit

Brennan drops a beauty to Nick Miller over Huff, probably 50 yds in air . . . thought he didn’t have an arm?

    30 minutes ago via PockeTwit

  243. d1島 August 10, 2010 7:48 am

    Mahalo Ohana808!

  244. d1島 August 10, 2010 7:49 am

Brennan, simulating Dallas can’t squeeze pass past Wimbley to Owens vs. 1st team goal line

Hiram Eugene, 2nd team goal line, picks Brennan. They’re going half speed . . . maybe.

  245. Da Punchbowl Kid August 10, 2010 7:50 am

    I second that, d1!

    How you today?

  246. d1島 August 10, 2010 7:50 am

    Practice over . . .

  247. d1島 August 10, 2010 7:51 am

    DPK,

Was doing good until I started checking the tweets! 🙄

  248. tommui August 10, 2010 7:54 am

    Good Morning Hawaii!

Bad decision about not showing the game but I think it is a Mainland, not a local decision.

Of course the powers-that-be locally could have informed the Mainland people about the interest in the Raiders game.

  249. tommui August 10, 2010 7:55 am

    Good morning AL!

You going to Genji on Thursday? I got your Media Guide!

  250. (Jesse) James August 10, 2010 7:56 am

Aiyaaahhh….d1, what did you do??? MWAHAHAHAHHAHA

    Whoa…DPK is here??

  251. d1島 August 10, 2010 8:04 am

    (J)J,

CB gotta stop simulating Big D and just get the chance to be himself!

  252. greenthumb August 10, 2010 8:05 am

Re: Raiders non-telecast on Thursday. Maybe, to look at this as kindly as possible, Oceanic is not as speedy about adding things up as we would like. If this is the case, there are 2 business days, today and tomorrow, for Oceanic to become aware and ask its parent for alternate feed for Hawaii. And certainly Oceanic could talk to Time Warner on its subscribers’ behalf and make things happen? It sounds like the game is going to be taped and telecast, just not in this market?

Who would we — or those *ahem* with the power of getting their calls returned? — phone or e-mail at Oceanic? Speaking from experience, some of the front-line customer-service people are supportive of UH but they don’t super-promptly forward calls to their bosses in power. 🙁

  253. Raiderfanalways August 10, 2010 8:09 am

I hope the local media didn’t pick UH’s starting quaterback

  254. Raiderfanalways August 10, 2010 8:10 am

  261. Ipu Man August 10, 2010 9:16 am

As for Malcolm Lane, Mal graduated but had a year of eligibility left.

He could transfer to a D1 school and not have to sit out. But not in the WAC, then it would be two years. He was one of UH’s best players, so what happened?

  262. A-House August 10, 2010 10:17 am

Can I just state the obvious here. Two big films this year about women and aimed at women and both were directed by men and both didn’t live up to the hype.
