At the end of yesterday’s walk-through, the quarterbacks gathered and let out a yell for senior Brent Rausch. Rausch might be eligible for an exemption that would allow him to compete as a sixth-year senior in 2011. But he has opted to get on with his life, and today’s Hawaii Bowl will be his last game as a Warrior.

Morning…managed to escape muddy southern Cal and made the flight home.
I need to wake up my wife and kids in 15 minutes to get ready to go to the airport…if everything goes well I should be arriving at Aloha Stadium in time for the game. I am going straight to the stadium so I won’t be able to get to the tailgate (the food on the plane sure isn’t going to match up to the tailgate food!), but I’m so happy to be able to get to see the game!

It means a national ranking, 11 wins and recruits are laying low until after the game to make their future decisions. Local recruits have not said a word, except Ben “Mountain” Dew, but Dew is really from New Zealand even though he went to Word of Life. Juda Parker, Starr Sua, Tigi Hill, Ben Mamea, and Asiata have been mum. There might be some others like Cyrus Coen, maybe.

Any word if the coaches are interested in Dano Graves (David’s younger brother)? He lit it up in his two seasons as the starting quarterback for Folsom High and just led them to the Division II California Championship. He is small, 5-9, 180 but very quick and fast and can pass, he would make a great slot! I think only a couple of FCS teams and Air Force have shown interest so far because of his size.

Players weren’t inspired from the get-go, terrible preparation (team shouldn’t have taken that much time off) on behalf of our staff, underestimated our opponent, and questionable coaching (Austin should have gone in for Moniz) all led to where we are now. I think Mac is a great coach, but Hawai’i should not be losing to Tulsa by this margin at home on national TV.

dang, when the ESPN lights go on our coaches are like deer standing in the headlights, motionless, unprepared and befuddled.
full practices on Monday and Tuesday, 1 hour on Wednesday and the result is, Tulsa 62-35. Yup, no need to practice, the players were better off studying for finals. I hope the coaches got on Bradley earlier though, the ESPN announcers alluded to him being an academic casualty.
The interceptions were thrown by our qbs, but it was the Tulsa coaches who did their homework and put their team in position/alignment to succeed and we did not have a counter punch.
We lost in Korea, Vietnam, and it seems in Iraq and Afrankinstein.
But we don’t beat down our troops.
All you who are complaining about coaching and preparation…
We made 6 turnovers, which led to 24 Tulsa points. What if we scored those 24 points instead of making that fumble and 5 interceptions?

Espn showed a clip of Moniz paddle boarding/surfing. Was it this week that he did that? Akamai athletes know that surfing, swimming and now paddling can be detrimental to athletes who throws a ball, especially days before a game. Different muscles are used that can have an impact on them throwing accurately.
Maybe he always did that before games and it did not affect him. It did not help when 2 of his starting receivers did not play. Also the 2nd interception could have been the receiver running the route incorrectly. (Just guessing on this)
Anyway it was sad that they loss and feel bad for Pilares. Always better winning the last game than losing. However congratulations to the football team and the coaches for a winning season.

It pains me when people instantly jump off of the bandwagon and start throwing knives and hatchets everywhere, just ’cause things didn’t go the way they wanted. Such is life. I guess some just grew up so protected, they weren’t exposed to the harsh realities of life.
We have a great group of student athletes in every sport in which we field a team. These student athletes give their all for us, our school, our state, and for themselves and their teammates. Mistakes are made in life. We learn from them and hopefully get stronger and move on.
This was a tough loss, ’cause we know our boyz can do better. But, mistakes just kept piling up, making it tougher and tougher to overcome. No matter. They didn’t just give up. They kept at it. And for that, I’m satsfied. Not thrilled with the outcome of this game, but I’m satisfied with this season. They outdid all expectations overall.
Some of us will be there for all UH student athletes, no matter what.

Tulsa did what I thought they would do. They came out early and tried to knock Moniz out of the game. They did get him out of rhythm early. I thought the defense came out and played really well. You just can’t give an offense as Tulsa’s that many opportunities. It really bothered me when tulsa stopped the run with only 4 players on the los.
UH needed to start out fast but it seems like the R&S is a difficult offense to get going if there is a long layoff between games. It seems like with the time they have before the bowl game opponents defenses are ready for it. They put players exactly where the ball was going. I was hoping that UH would have added something extra to show on offense for the game but it was deja vu.

Looking back to the begining of the season, Warriors did ACCOMPLISH !
Produced a winning season and turned Hawaii around dramatically to enter
the Mountain West Conference. Mahalo to ALL the seniors as they led by example
and left everything on the field. The BIG GAMES some day will turn into Hawaii favor.
It is a process and I for one will be there with the rest of you to FINALLY celebrate
a BIG win in a BIG game. MAHALO to all of you Tsaiko bloggers as I have ENJOYED all

if we won all the time, I’d have less reason to scream and shout.. DEFENSE..!! OFFENSE!!.. so it’s give and take.. today.. we gave and they took.. Their Defense did what ours couldn’t… put up points early in the game and took the Warriors out of their own game.
Rolo and Aranda have a lot to think about during the off season and a lot to do to make our Warriors better than they have ever been.

Steve: I actually AGREE with all your points. Listen I’ve been an avid follower of Hawaii’s football team for the past decade. I’ve seen many great wins, and I’ve gone through many painful losses. I’m not saying I know Hawaii football inside and out because I dont, but I will say I have an idea how this program has been run, and to to be honest with Hawaii fans Steve is right, you HAVE to have higher expectations! Hawaii went to a BCS bowl, yes a BCS bowl, and they are content with losing to Tulsa, a C-USA team that was ranked second to last I believe in D-1A against the pass. How are you guys not more upset? I see posts about thanking the players and in one post comparing our players to our soldiers overseas, and how we don’t “beat down our soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan etc. so why should we come down harsh on our players…” This is what has always irked. Hawaii has always been my second fav. team, as my first team has always been Penn State. Sure, the expectations are going to be much higher at PSU then Hawaii…but for the love of god Hawaii has to realize that losses to a terrible Colorado team, and to a team such as Tulsa is unacceptable at this stage of the game. Fans should be pissed at these losses. I’m sorry to come off harsh here guys but lets face reality, ever since June Jones left this program has been a bit unstable and we haven’t won a bowl game since 2006. Something is wrong. Mac deserves an extension yes, but a very short one, and maybe in another two years, if we continue to see these losses then a change may need to be made, cause currently this program is too unstable, in my opinion.

#446 Most of this is typical overreaction to a loss. I don’t think anyone is satisfied with a loss to Tulsa, so I don’t where you got that idea from. You can get mad at the coaches they are paid very well for what they do if you think there was a lack of preparation, but I try not to be too critical of the players, they are not professionals after all. It’s a different story in the NFL, players are fair game there.
As for not getting more upset, shrugs… I don’t know. It’s football it’s not life or death there are more important things to get angry about in life than a lost football game I suppose.
Hawaii was so overated! What a humiliating loss. They made Tulsa look like a BCS team.

#454: I just get that notion from reading comments that a lot of people think “yeah we lost to Tulsa, sucks, but we should be good next season! so lets put a wrap on it and move on from here!” However teams with higher standards such as TCU, Boise St, even teams like Utah don’t hold themselves to these standards. They are not saying these sort of things. It’s great that people our congratulating all the players, esp. the seniors…very well deserved..but my word UH fans have to come down on the people who are held accountable for these embarrassing losses.

Hawaii had an awesome year defying the odds and playing a great regular season. Cannot fault them for where they are today. I’m proud to be a Warrior more than ever.
I truly truly truly had NO IDEA about the whole “Practice” (or lack thereof) issue until Stretch and Ralph had made mention to me.
When I was watching, I commented half-jokingly that our team looks like they didn’t come prepared, didn’t practice, didn’t have the timing and just didn’t look like they were in it to win it. (Offense in the 1st and 2nd half, Defense in the 2nd)…Who knew that this might have been the case regarding practice?
I don’t know who that team wearing green and white was on the field tonight…but that wasn’t my Warriors that I have gotten to know this season thats for sure…
15 practices = 15 times that coaches and players should be together practicing. As a whole team, By position, by alphabetical order, by height, by the favorite flavor of ice cream…I Dont care, just DO IT…
On to next year and another WAC championship!

kawika: what am i going to do about it? Well, I’m currently in college, and have no affiliation with UH, I’m just an avid follower like a said earlier. What can you, and other people affiliated with the university do? Money, and lots of it. Money is what makes things happen, it’s can change programs. Also, a different attitude amongst players, coaches, the administration, and fans that holds more people accountable. This is D1 football here, Hawaii like Steve and I said earlier, went to a BCS football game. Hawaii was even ranked going into the Tulsa game! However, look at coach Mac’s wins, and then look at his losses. See those teams he won against? Most of those are creampuffs lets be honest with the exception of Navy, Fresno and Nevada. Then look at his losses. That’s why I dont get why people are so happy and content right now…Mac should NOT get some huge contract extension by any means…it’s certainly not deserved. The players may like him, but his only BCS win was against a dismal Washington St. team according to the wins Pride posted. That my friend, is not good, and not deserving of a contract extension, and fans should be a bit more up in arms with Mac in my opinion.

Ck122, I see ,what you are trying to say. You are confusing success, with competence. At this point in Hawaii’s progression, I believe we need competence . In time, you will hear what I am saying. However, you are looking at the zeroes and not the o. This coach is not photogenic, and/or lucid at times, however he is solid. Yes in a few years, we may need a new coach, however, in the mean time…he and the other coaches have made cmiitments, to newcomers that they will (or should) keep.
ckl22: Looking at Coach Mac’s losses say’s one thing “can’t beat the big boys”. Forgot about the losses to Florida, Cincinnati and Oregon State. Bosie State 3 times and going into the same conference in 2012 where once again they will be a force to be recognize with. Your points are VALID as his won / lost record speaks VOLUMES for it self !

Eh… Tulsa’s Defense scored big in the early part of the game.. our Defense kept us in the game. They two coaches were right. The team who played better defense today would win. Our defense played well but Tulsa’s played one better. They scored and not only once. Then their offense kept up with our offense and started to ride their momentum. Tulsa played a good game. Putting Pilares in to return punts in hindsight was a bad move.
Offensively, we still need to get better. That’s the lesson I got tonight.

Ive written about how much this game meant to the program considering the events of the past few months with regards to conference expansions.
The end result speaks for itself.
That stadium looked *very* empty today. I saw an AP report that said that the attendance was 42,000 or so…it seriously didn’t look like more than 32,000 people were there. In the 4th quarter the stadium was really empty…but my parents and I stayed until the end.

The best part of going to the game to me was spending the day with my parents and the rest of the people at the tailgate before/after the game. The game would normally be the best part of the day…but that part of the day was not as enjoyable as it could have been.
Thank you to everyone who organized, provided food, helped set up, and contributed in any way to the Tsaikogate. I’m glad to finally have been able to make it to one.
I’m on the plane with the Meatogas and Jaspers and tons of fans. One engine won’t start. Hmmmm. Back to the gate while they find the problem.
One thing I kept being thankful about late in the game is that the BCS points that UH racked up today will be there despite the game. The final BCS standings is all that counts for BCS points in conference realignment issues and the final BCS standings are made *before* the bowl games start.
So, according to the BCS, UH will forever be a top 25 team in the 2010 season. I’d like to wipe this game from my memory and just go by those standings in the future…

Congratulations to Tulsa for truly earning this win. Their passing defense was *horrible* this year, truly one of the worst in the country. Their coaches and players worked extremely hard over those 15 practices and in countless film sessions to prepare for UH’s offense.
You could see how Tulsa was prepared for the game in countless plays…
* The first time Salas got a WR screen pass, the Tulsa safety was running towards Salas BEFORE THE BALL WAS SNAPPED. They knew by formation and some other tipoff thing that Salas was going to get that pass and they stopped him from getting a big gain. WAC teams were devastated by that play all season, but Tulsa was ready.
* The pass that Moniz threw where a Tulsa player was standing right where the pass was going to be throws *before* Moniz even through the ball.
* The running plays to Green were not getting the same lanes as Green had in some WAC games, no matter how much Tulsa focused on stopped UH’s passing attack.
I thought in the first half that it was clear that UH had athletes that Tulsa couldn’t stop, like Salas, and the turnovers were the only thing that stopped UH. However, in the second half Tulsa came up with stops that were the difference.
I’m going to look at this game as one that Tulsa won, a win they earned that wasn’t just given to them by UH. To read some of the comments here, it seems like some people think that Tulsa wasn’t any good and UH should have easily beaten them…that sounds like the type of disrespect that UH fans are always complaining about being directed towards UH.

That top 25 BCS ranking may be the difference in the MWC becoming a BCS AQ conference or not. I’m glad that they cannot take that away from UH.
I sat in the yellow section (in J, about the 30-yard line) in the first half and the seats there are in HORRIBLE condition. It really looks bad there!
It was also sad that after 5 drives in the game, there were *no* people in the 8 seats to the left of me and *no* people in the 7 seats to the right of me, with nobody in the 9 seats in front of me. However, every seat was filled by the end of the first quarter. Heck, I came all the way from San Diego and I got to the game on time!

Before we go overboard in praising UH’s defense, we should acknowledge that Tulsa’s offense is meant to be fast-paced to wear down a defense. However, their offense couldn’t get on the field much when their D took 2 interceptions back for TDs and took one back almost all the way that their offense punched in quickly.
So, UH *did* come up with a way to keep Tulsa’s offense off the field…but letting their D score was probably not the way they wanted to do that! Tulsa’s offense was moving the ball well on that drive where their receiver fumbled the ball through the end zone.
Kudos to the Tulsa coaches for making some amazing adjustments at halftime. First drive: 2 passes, TD. Second drive: 2 runs to the right side, TD. Third drive: run for 10 yards and then a 47-yard TD pass.
We CANNOT put the loss just on the offense when we see that the offense scored 35 points and the defense let Tulsa score 3 times when it mattered most to start the second half and each drive took 2 plays. This was a team loss and I can’t see just blaming the offense for it.
Mack final line at this press conference transcript is something I agree with–we should give credit to Tulsa instead of tearing down UH’s team.

My Dad and I saw the coaches before and after the game. Before the game, we were walking on the ramp towards our section when the coaches were walking to the booth. Mouse Davis said to my Dad that he liked the hat he was wearing (Dad had a Christmas-themed hat on). The coaches looked focused and determined, they really had their game faces on.
After the game we were walking down the stairs at the same time as the coaches were walking down from the booth. Mouse, Brian Smith, and Dave Aranda were in front of me and the other coaches were behind me. I said to Coach Aranda that at least UH had a great season…but all he did was grimace and it was clear that he and the rest of the coaches did *not* want to be consoled after that game.
The look on the coaches after the game was completely different than the look they had before the game. You could see that the game meant a lot to them and that they were not happy about how things turned out.
Everyone is sleeping at my in-laws house, but I’m still too wired from the game to sleep. I think I’ll go and gather all the quotes available from the game…but reading them is going to be depressing.
One stat that was overlooked:
Tulsa 1 punt return for 18 yards
UH 2 punt returns for -6 yards and a lost fumble (3 first-half points for Tulsa when the game was still close)
This year, UH was #106 in the country in punt returns (bottom third of the WAC)
Last year, UH was #89 in the country in punt returns (bottom half of the WAC)
In 2008, UH was #120 in the country–last in the country since there are only 120 D-IA teams.
In 2007, UH was #20 in the country in punt returns.

I posted several times (as did many others) regarding my concerns about the lack of practice, and so many people were quick to shoot us down as being negative and overreacting. eh hem . . . excuse me? Clearly what was on the field tonight were two teams . . . one who was prepared, and one that was NOT. That was a terrible performance by Moniz in the first half and the defense in the second. Just a horrible way to end a great year. My Christmas wish . . . fair, open QB competition. Next time, fricken practice before the bowl game.

Scholie athletes go to college for an education. Time away from practice is totally justified to prepare for finals and projects. We lose our left side for the game. We lose our #2 receiver and then our #3. QB gets hammered and doesn’t look in synch. We get beat. BUT! We won the WAC. We made a bowl game. We graduated seniors. We set records. Question: What grade do you give the team this year. With what was expected and what was achieved, I give them an A. Our human nature always wants more, but look at what the Warriors accomplished. I choose the Warriors over any team in the country! I wouldn’t want Scameron Newton or Terrible Pryor. Sometimes folks, the stars don’t align. Tulsa is a good team that played a great game. We got beat. Get over it. We live in Hawaii! We are blessed. We don’t live in Alabama, Oregon or Wisconsin. What else do they have but football? Some things are more important than one game. Dollar for dollar we have the best athletic program and teams in the country. Bleed Green. One snap and clear. 252 days till the next snap. Hope this is a lesson learned. Three full practices from the season ender to the bowl game is not enought time for a precision offense to come out sharp.
Stretch was right in his concern about how the coaches were using the time they had. He wasn’t putting anybody down. I agreed with him that the coaches should have taken a hard look at the amount of prep days they had available, factor in Finals week, and come out with a workable practice schedule.

Boise’s incoming class is shaping up as awesome, ditto with SDSU.
That is exactly the time perid we are currently recruiting to be competitive…..

Props to Tulsa. They prepared well for UH and it showed. I liked their HC’s attitude of “we here by ourselves, no band, no cheerleaders, no hype.” Came in with an “us against the word attitude” and it worked.
Very frustrating to see UH end their season on another embarrassing sour note (Georgia, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and now Tulsa). Can’t be good that it was also on national TV. UH looked sloppy, out of sync, and complacent. I’m sure lack of practice time and a lackadaisical and overconfident attitude played a major role. Read and heard so much about the advantages of having and extra 15 practices in terms of preparing for next year. Sad that Hawaii couldn’t take advantage of it. Also read that a number of players were spending time moving out of their off-campus apartments during the Bowl practice weeks. Perhaps UH would be better off playing a bowl game on the continent and NOT at home as it is too comfortable for them.
This is a wake-up call for UH if they hope to be competitive in the MWC in 2012. The competition will be tougher with the likes of AFA, SDSU, altitude games at Wyoming & CSU, not to mention Boise, Reno, & Fresno.
Sorry for the typos on the last post. Frustration does that to me. Deep breath – tomorrow is another day/season. Live and learn, and move on. Hope UH signs some “players” during the JUCO signing period and in February.
