Doris: Corey Lau, Samson Anguay commit to UH

Doris Sullivan reports that Corey Lau, a receiver from Kailua High, and Samson Anguay, a slotback/running back from Campbell High, have accepted football scholarships from the Warriors. Lau, who transferred from Saint Louis School a year ago, was the point guard on Kailua’s Division II state championship team.”I’ve always wanted to play for UH,” Lau told the Warrior Beat today.

Guess who’s back?
Yep, linebacker Blaze Soares has fully recovered from an achilles’ injury, and is doing sprint drills at Cooke/Ching field.
Soares, who weighed 259 pounds in April, is now down to 236.
In addition to running and lifting weights, he has kept fit doing yardwork.

Left tackle Aaron Kia also has benefitted from an intense conditioning program. Kia’s weight had dropped to 270 during spring training. But now he has up to 290 while maintaining his agility. He looked nimble during blocking drills yesterday.

Best of luck to Monchalee Steiger, who works for our Web department. She’s jumping out of an airplane today. We wish her a safe descent, and not just because she promises to get Brian Viloria to appear on the Warrior Beat Show.

Today’s sports-bar argument: Game on the line, which current or former UH player gets the ball.
My choices:
1. Ashley Lelie.
2. Trevor Ruffin.
3 (tie) Natasha Kai, Dan “Iceman” Kelly.

* * * * *

Speaking of the Iceman, he has been cleared to play for the Cal Baptist soccer team. He will have two years of soccer eligibility, bringing to six overall the number of seasons he will play in college.

UH is finally going green. After months of prep work, the workers actually are starting to paint the Lower Campus. And unlike the original blue color scheme, this time they’re going with green.

Kia still look a little slim, but I’m glad he put on the weight… I hope he plays with discipline as he has the potential to be a very good Tackle. This years offensive line I think will surprise and make us forget about that fluke record last season…

  51. Kazz June 19, 2009 10:27 am

Best of luck to Monchalee Steiger, who works for our Web department. She’s jumping out of an airplane today. We wish her a safe descent, and not just because she promises to get Brian Viloria to appear on the Warrior Beat Show.

Skydiving is pretty safe. Back in 2003 I went for the first time with Drop Zone Hawaii, I don’t think they’re in business anymore.

I’ll never forget the roar of the wind when that door to the plane opened, we tumbled in mid air for about 3 seconds and when we finally straightened out it was difficult to take a breath in. I guess that was due to the sheer speed in which we were falling. Funny thing is you don’t even feel like you are falling at all, it feels more like you are suspended in air with the world’s strongest fan underneath you.

In a matter of 5 seconds after leaving the plane they pull the parachute, and this is where I learned one must wear jeans as opposed to basketball shorts when skydiving. You see, the harness is like a backpack but it also has two straps that goes around your crotch area and wraps across both your thighs… your upper thighs.

I mean think about it… the speed at which you are falling combined with the sudden YANK of a parachute PLUS thin shorts = PAIN in the nether regions. It felt like the hand of God coming down and giving me a front-side weggie.

Anyway, the slow descent with the chute was nice, it lasted about 10 minutes and this is where you really can see the view and appreciate what you just accomplished. It was cool because all of a sudden the roar of the wind and atmosphere was deafening, but once they pull the chute, it becomes completely silent.

I’ve never gone back but I want to.

  52. Kazz June 19, 2009 10:28 am

RE: Offensive line discipline and improvement.

Coach Gordy Shaw get ’em. No worries, we got a great coach working with our Warriors.

  53. Kazz June 19, 2009 10:35 am

Game on da line… I’d want the ball to go to (in the hands of):

    Men’s Basketball: Matt Gibson
    Wahine Basketball: BJ Itoman
    Warrior Volleyball: Yuval Katz
    Wahine Softball: Tyleen Tausaga
    Warrior Football: Jason Rivers
    Rainbow Baseball: Kolten Wong

  54. Pauoa Boy June 19, 2009 10:35 am

    Kazz

Yup I not worried, cause like bruddah Inoke said in his interview…this years team motto should be “Discipline”! I’m sure it’s not just the Coach who get em, but the players and especially the Seniors. Our Oline this year all Seniors so I know they going keep each other in check and set the example for everybody else…

(If the compliance people are reading this, the $5.00 Blaze Soares has is his own and not given to him by a booster.)

  65. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2009 11:14 am

    Aloha Stadium Visual Update

Well I guess they heard the cries of “HURRY UP”.

While only half the mauka sideline and entire north endzone roof is being worked on now, they are about to finish installing the new roof in what looks like a matter of days.

The new roof looks to be black.

Again, if this is going to be some half-a**ed job to only repair the “urgent” areas, the stadium will look HORRIBLE. Hope the ENTIRE roof will be replaced in time for the season.

  67. Da Punchbowl Kid June 19, 2009 11:16 am

  75. Kazz (blkberry_storm) June 19, 2009 11:42 am

    Piper’s Son,

I was just about to follow up with A-house on that UNPLEASANT incident with that individual that picked up the phone in the Koa Anuenue office.

I have never had something like that happen with Koa Anuenue people before or in fact with anyone working on lower campus.

Man, that person had NO idea what kind of UH supporter she was being rude to.

  76. Derek June 19, 2009 11:48 am

Man, Blaze looks big! I hope he gets down to about 225-230 at the most.
He’s so important to the team I would withold him from contact drills as much as possible. We can’t afford to lose him for any extensive time in games. The guy is a playmaker deluxe.

  77. BG June 19, 2009 11:57 am

Yesterday, I posted a link to an article talking about Ben Johnson’s incredible 9.79 sec 100m time in the Olympics when he was juiced to the gills with steriods. In the tape analysis of 10 meter increments, they determined that he also went faster than the world records for the 50m and 60m. Bottom line…he was credited with a 40 yd time of 4.38. According to the NFL combine results, there are lots of athletes who are faster…LOL

So, I don’t get excited about these hand held times that are often thrown around for football players’ 40 yd sprints…the variance is huge. Good to know that a player is comparably “very fast” among his peers, tho’.

  84. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2009 12:21 pm

    BG:
I think there are a lot of players who ran faster than Ben Johnson. He was racing over 100 meters, and the key is that he accelerated as he went on. What’s a world record over 100 meters isn’t a record over 40 yards.

  85. al June 19, 2009 12:22 pm

#82…agree. the greatest comeback against the most difficult and most impossible odds.

#2 was sitting amidst all of the sjsu student body going nutz. they too were in total awe at colt & company that day. not too mention my kid going nutz. he said at the end of the game the sjsu fans also cheered for colt.

    reality check…..

7.4 % unemployment rate for the state of hawaii.

    or

1 out of 13.5 people are out of work

    or

if the aloha stadium were sold out, 3,700 sitting in the stands are unemployed

scary part is that it does not take into account for a lot of people that have only a part time job and are looking for more work to maintain a lifestyle.

  92. al June 19, 2009 12:48 pm

    whitey you missed ralph’s que……………
you supposed to follow up with

“so what ralph, you like come with us?”

  93. BG June 19, 2009 12:51 pm

    ST (#84)

Not true about accelerating over 100m. The last 30-35 meters, sprinters are trying to maintain form and speed…no mo acceleration. Take it from an ex sprint coach. Plus, he beat the world records at 50 and 60 meters which means that his acceleration rate was incredible. Yet, the video only validated a 4.38 40 time. That’s a HUGE statement on a lot of claimed sub 4.4 times.

  94. g-nalo June 19, 2009 12:53 pm

bg….the economy in jeopardy is a real thing.

what i’d like to see is our govt both fed and state look at cutting aid to foreign markets, development, and other types of welfare assistance to non-citizens first to reduce the budget. then use those monies to help our own country’s citizens.

    …nuff said.

  98. BG June 19, 2009 1:12 pm

Just got my Phil Steele mag yesterday and glanced at it last night. He goes to great lengths and uses some pretty sophisticated models. From a historical perspective, he really is quite accurate compared to his peers. But, he still misses 1 out of 4 predictions.

For Hawaii, he can’t factor in the new coaches and the players with starting experience who were injured (Rocky, Blaze, for instance) or the players who played in a rotation or package, but were not considered starters (i.e. Brashton, Meatoga, etc). Will make a significant difference, IMO

  99. BIGWAVE96744 June 19, 2009 1:15 pm

2006 late in the 4th.. Hawaii clinging to a lead..Purdue is driving.. 2nd down and a frosh LB wearing #53 BLAZES in and sacks the QB.. Next play 3rd & long.. Int Hawaii.. Ahhhh hana hou in ’09…

  100. Ralph June 19, 2009 1:15 pm

i wonder if our federal gov’t is continuing to give Israel and Egypt 10 billions dollars in aid each year. Israel gets the bulk of the 10 billion..I don’t recall the U.S. gov’t stopping this aid, it is claimed that the money helps stabilize the middle east and keeps the Suez Canal open..how come our European allies don’t see it this way, or Japan, is it because the U.S. is the only country with a large contingent of Israel lobbyists.

  101. Ralph June 19, 2009 1:18 pm

in these hard times I agree with Al, stop foreign aid, all aid for direct giving for disaster and humanitarian needs, instead channel all giving through the United Nations and ask all industrialized nations to contribute equally for all types of aid…

  102. Ralph June 19, 2009 1:22 pm

I glanced at Phil Steele’s pub, not much support for UH, its players by position or as a team by offense or defense…boys just got to strap it up and do it on the field this fall…let their work ethic do the talking for them…

  103. Kazz June 19, 2009 1:49 pm

For the longest time, the Stanley was the only UH venue that represented the true colors of UH.

Good thing Murakami Stadium caught up recently.

    Next… Aloha Stadium! (yeah right… πŸ™„ )

  104. Kazz June 19, 2009 1:51 pm

  106. truegreen June 19, 2009 1:59 pm

  107. baa June 19, 2009 2:03 pm

    baa

  108. Kazz June 19, 2009 2:08 pm

    Truegreen,

Maybe it is green, like a dark green. I’m kind of color blind.

But did you see it today? Whatever color it is, the new roof being put in will stick out as it’s darker.

  109. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2009 2:17 pm

I think Phil Steele does a good job of crunching the numbers that he has. Thing is, he only gets basic numbers. Penalties per play, fumbles per carry, etc.
He doesn’t have situational numbers, like UH’s success rate on 2nd-and-8 from the right hashmark.
Or, of course, YACs and YAHs.

  110. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2009 2:18 pm

    …or missed tackles.
    …or missed tackles per rush.

  111. PIAA DS June 19, 2009 2:32 pm

Corey Lau from Kailua is the newest Warrior! He was offered by UH and committed right away. Said ” it was my dream to be a warrior so I just committed”.

Corey is an academic qualifier – no issues there with him.

He had the top times in the 40, L Drill and T Drill at the PIAA Combine on May 30. All the times/results are on our site.

    Wooo Hooo! You Go Corey!

  112. Kazz June 19, 2009 2:34 pm

Yeah it’s impossible for these magazine guys to view all 120 FBS teams up close and personal, so they have to rely on #s.

I don’t doubt they know their football in general, but personally I wouldn’t put much stake in sole #s alone.

Yeah Steele predicted we’d be a great turn-around team in 1999, but I think we were pretty far off the radar for anyone to really pay attention and if Steele ended up being wrong, I don’t think he’d get much slack for it. Besides, a former NFL guy in JJ coming to save UH, I think it would have been a “safe” bet for an outsider to guess we’d have a turn-around year.

Steele also predicted we’d get the BCS invite in 2007… Well, despite some naysayers, 2007 was the first time UH got multiple outlets guessing the same thing with our fair share of naysayers. Again, it wasn’t exactly a BOLD prediction in 2007 on his part.

  113. Kazz June 19, 2009 2:35 pm

Mahalo much Aunty Doris for all you do for the student-athletes of hawaii and for their families.

    Great news from Doris.

Corey Lau is a terrific athlete. Big loss for SLS; big pickup for Kailua and now UH.

Athletic sibling, Samantha, ripped it up at Linfield this past year in volleyball as a true frosh. Nice parents.

I think Tony T and Doris would work so well together for UH. Think about it…..

  144. Derek June 19, 2009 4:13 pm

The 2 new recruits are short and light, but I gotta believe the coaches must have felt that they liked some of the things they did in the recent combine, camps, and in speaking w/ their high school coach(es). It’s an inexact science, but the coaches have to project a recruit a couple of years in advance and put in the work to get stronger, faster, and heavier w/ more muscle. Their size seems to be about Channon Harris and Chad Owens. Oh, and Matt Harding!!! What were Samson’s combine stats? Anyway, good luck to them in being new Warriors.

  145. NYUH June 19, 2009 4:25 pm

Losing all-league linebackers Solomon Elimimian and Adam Leonard deals the defense its biggest blow. Not only were these guys two of the best players on the team, but they were also two of the best leaders. The Warriors are confident that Brashton Satele and R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane are capable replacements. Blaze Soares and Paipai Falemalu figure to fit in the picture in the linebacking corps as well. John Fonoti, the team’s leading returning tackler with 62 stops last season, anchors the defensive line from the end position.

  146. Garret June 19, 2009 4:42 pm

    Doris,

Thank you for the news on the two commits!

Welcome to the Warriors Corey Lau and Samson Anguay!

One nice thing about getting slotbacks as early commits is that there is less poaching risk…since many schools don’t use slotbacks as much and use TEs instead.

  147. Garret June 19, 2009 4:45 pm

Congratulations to Dick Tomey for the honor of being part of this inaugural induction class!

Dick Tomey, head football coach at San Jose State University and 1960 graduate of DePauw University, is a member of the inaugural induction class of the Michigan City High School Football Hall of Fame. Tomey and four other graduates from the Indiana city will be honored July 20.

Tomey led Hawaii for ten seasons, then led the University of Arizona’s football program from 1987 to 2000, winning a school-record 95 games. He’s been head coach at San Jose State since 2005. “He has 181 career victories, only Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden and Mack Brown have more victories among active coaches. He has never had consecutive losing seasons

  148. Garret June 19, 2009 4:48 pm

Another article about Coach Tomey’s honor. Happy Birthday to Coach Tomey!

On July 20, Michigan City High School and its football team will host its second annual golf outing.

But there will be a new feature this year: The inaugural induction class for the MCHS football Hall of Fame.

Head coach Craig Buzea announced late last week the five members of the first Hall of Fame class, honoring the past players of MCHS football.

The honorees are Abe Gibron, Tony Cline, Tom Nowatzke, Dick Tomey and Donnie Thomas.

He led Hawaii for 10 seasons. He led the school to its first top 20 ranking in school history in 1981, and was named the Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year that season.

Earlier this year, he was named the president of the American Football Coaches Association. He turns 71 on Saturday.

  149. Garret June 19, 2009 4:52 pm

To answer Ralph’s question from the other day, Mac will be a part of this year’s Samoa Football Academy being put on by JJ’s Foundation. Jesse Sapolu, Jack Thompson, Samson Satele, Ta’ase Faumui and Ma’a Tanuvasa will also participate. They are also bringing $250,000 of donated medical supplies to the people of American Samoa.

PIAA DS – iPhone is a wonderful thing. No worry. Couple of no call reasons- check to see if your mute switch is on. That’s the little silver switch on the left side near the top. If you see a red dot, it is on mute. Flip it the other way.

Other problem could be a bad signal area where the call could not reach you. Then VM picks it up and lets you know when you have a signal again.

  152. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] June 19, 2009 6:06 pm

Thanks Liz…I figured the mute out – the hard way, thought the phone was broke, took it back to the store. Luckily they are really nice people and didnt look at my blonde hair (albiet not natural) and make jokes! Could be the signal. Ill have to look at that.

I could not do that. The bungee jump was more than enough. I kept asking if the four rubber bands were enough, and if they were new. Good thing I had gone swimming before the jump — no one could not see how much shi-shi came out on the way down.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  164. Ralph June 19, 2009 7:05 pm

Duffer can’t be much lighter, she’s an athlete! I know a lot of HS athletes who played fast pitch and soccer, and who are shorter than the princess, and all of them weight in at about 135

  165. A-House June 19, 2009 7:05 pm

Perhaps, Coach Mack will post Phil Steele’s predictions/comments somewhere for the Warriors to read and perhaps the players will use this info as a “motivation” factor in off-season training and fall camp.

WELCOME, to the 3 newest recruits for 2010! We are blessed with your decison to contribute to the Warrior’s legacy!

  166. expat June 19, 2009 7:06 pm

    Doris,

You should also see a “badge” appear over the phone application icon when you have a missed call or voicemail. The badge is just a superimposed number showing you how many calls missed and unread voicemails. If voicemail badges are not showing up pretty quickly then there is a problem that AT&T needs to look at. You just have to get into the habit of not ignoring badges.

  167. A-House June 19, 2009 7:09 pm

    Kekoa:

remember “jump school” the thigh straps were so tight we would walk with bended backs to the aircraft for jumps.

    #144,

I hope Samson and Corey have Chad Owens work ethic in the gym and on the field. Growing up in the Valley we were at Booth Park everyday, either playing BBall with the boys or playing football on the field. He always had quick feet and was intense in everything. At RHS he would always be in the gym with Kalilimoku, Kapanui, Keomaka and the boys lifting and running sprints in the gym. He was always on a strict diet and had the discipline to stick with it. Although he’s small in stature, bruddah is strong and ripped and quick as a cat.

Congrats for to UH football on verbal commitments of 3 projected offensive players.

Top guys I would want with the ball in their hands:

Colt Brennan handing off to Nate Ilaoa or passing the football to Jason Rivers, Devon Bess, Chad Owens and Ashley Lelie

I have an “After 2100 Ask the Blog” question…

I received an inquiry (involving hwnstln) asking about oama fishing in August…like at Kaawa beach in years past. Anyone have current insights about the oama runs and fishing nowadays?

I used to catch oama with small bamboo poles at Lanikai beach in Kailua when I was young, but that’s a looong time ago… πŸ™‚

    SteveM,

I’m going to arrive a little late tomorrow, though not too late. We have a dinner with friends in Pearl City tomorrow, the only day that both families have free. I made the dinner at 5pm so that I can drop off Lori and the kids by 7pm and then head to Genji’s. I should get there between 7:30 and 8pm.

  179. Garret June 19, 2009 9:38 pm

Most of the regulars here know that I think that the Chargers are going to basically be forced to leave San Diego soon, and a likely destination in LA. The marketing agreement between the Chargers and an LA group and the close ties between the ownership of the Chargers and the people who are building the stadium in LA…makes this seem quite likely.

If the new stadium goes up in LA, I hope that JD contacts them right away to try to get a UH game played there every year. That is a real cash cow for many teams. For example, Arkansas and Texas A&M are playing a game every year at the Cowboys new stadium–they were going to make $5 million EACH per year, but the economic downturn will mean that they “only” make $4 million each. After expenses that comes to $3.5 million per team…a neutral site game each year for UH could really make a difference in the budget.

Also, having a game in LA every year would be HUGE for UH’s recruiting in Southern California.

The new stadium is also a game-changer for team finances.

A&M and Arkansas each expect to earn at least $4 million from their game. Because of the weak economy, that’s down from an initial estimate of $5 million apiece, but still better than their home games. In typical home-and-home schedule arrangements, the home team keeps the revenue, meaning one big payday every other year. Now, the payday can come every year.

“We net about $3.5 million for a home game,” said A&M athletic director Bill Byrne.

I’ll take broadband internet over cable TV anyday. Depending on what you watch, it might be smart to disconnect your cable. A lot of stuff is online now, either on the network Web site or places like Hulu.

  187. Garret June 19, 2009 10:11 pm

    Jason,

I’m not surprised about internet beating cable TV, but I am a little surprised with the internet beating cell phones…especially considering how much some people use text messaging and how well smartphones can surf the web.

I got a lot of work done today and plan to work all night. I’m trying to keep up with my work despite all the family activities–I just work when my kids nap and after they go to sleep. Crazy work schedule, especially with a $500k proposal needing to be sent out on July 1 (and I leave Hawaii on July 1)…I’m really looking forward to taking a break for Genji’s. If I look a little tired tomorrow, I have good reason!

Back online for a quick post before calling it a (loooong) day.

Of course there are differing opinions on the worth of preseason mags. It’s important to keep a perspective on them. They sell for a reason. Hopefully, it’s for entertainment purposes only…but we all know they feed betting habits for some. In the past, I read them all. FWIW, I eventually narrowed it down to Phil Steele for all the number crunching and historical info it gave…but, that’s me.

If someone is really looking for accurate predictions for 120 teams in these magazines when there is such limited stability for most teams (players graduate)…well, I can recommend a local psychic in

okay, there is one large school every year next to the old natatorium. must be thousands that congregate there year after year.

the problem is, is that the waters left of the natatorium are permanently off limits to any type of fishing.

  194. BG June 19, 2009 10:36 pm

wow! A mystery ending in #192!!!

…Whitmore Village. Realizing that, I value the mag for the information on other teams and the broader national perspective…keeping in mind that there’s always faulty information included and there’s minimal information on in-coming frosh. If all anyone wants is information on the Warriors, then by all means, the best info is right here on the WB and Sports Hawaii. Only problem with that is the risk of developing tunnel vision.

OK. Make it a great weekend!!!!

SteveM- Last year the o’ama AND the halalu were pretty scarce. I did not even get out for o’ama fishing at all. This is on Kauai, I’m talking about.

We used to have a good halalu season starting in June but the big swarms were nonexistant last year.
