BJ Penn will be honorary captain

BJ Penn will serve as the Warriors’ honorary captain for this Saturday’s homecoming game against New Mexico, UH coach Norm Chow told the Warrior Beat last night.

Chow said he finalized arrangements with Penn and his management last night.

The move is inspiring and fitting. Penn and the Warriors share the same introduction song: Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole’s “Hawaii ’78.”

This might be the most intense coin flip in UH history.

Happy birthday to Wes’side Warrior.

That is one show a Grease wishes he followed. All that wealth from a duck caller product, whatever the formal name is.

A Grease catches . . . what is that? “The Wildman”? “Live action!!!!!”. That giy too much. He should charging in the $100s at least for doing what he do; instead, what? $50 tops? Heh. He kiss the turtle he catch, mein Gott.

  66. Former UH Athlete October 11, 2012 8:12 am

BJ Penn as honorary captain… very cool.

I checked out the UNM’s stats this year and ON PAPER, it looks good for UH. New Mexico actually gives up 4.9yds/rush attempt, so that bodes well for Will Gregory and the run game. Also, the New Mexico defense is giving up 66% completion percentage, which is one of the worst in NCAA. So that tells me that: 1. they’re playing soft coverage to not give up the big play, and 2. They don’t have a good pass rush to force bad throws.

On the other side of the ball, the one thing New Mexico does well is run the ball, and that’s about it… UNM isn’t a passing threat at all. They only average 49yds/game passing, and pass as a change of pace. So, Kaumeyer can bring a safety into the box to help vs the run on most situations.

Then it’s a matter of UH playing assignment football. UNM runs a similar look to UN-Reno, but not as good and without the threat to pass consistently.

If UH can establish Gregory on the ground and control the clock, I think UH has a good chance to win. If the defense is out on the field too long, UH will lose because the defe

If UH can establish Gregory on the ground and control the clock, I think UH has a good chance to win. If the defense is out on the field too long, UH will lose because the defense will get gassed out in the 2nd half like what happened vs SDSU and BYU.

  69. 3-Prong October 11, 2012 8:28 am

Go Warriors. Keep the streak of 10 straight Homecoming wins going!

  70. Buffoman October 11, 2012 8:30 am

I think what Coach is doing by naming the honorary captains as he has, is to bring back the community, not just the football folks, by making the event (game) an inclusive one.

It would be quite cool to have Derek Tatsuno wheel coach Murakami out as one of the co-captains at some point. They really put UH baseball on the map and brought a lot of attention to UH athletics.

I agree that it would also be nice to have the Noga brothers also be selected.

The more of the community the football program can touch to have them see that all UH athletics is inclusive, starting from the biggest, we may start to see more support in all of the venues. We’ve “siloed” the different athletic venues. It’s time to make it one, common venue that we as a community will support.

  84. Think2much October 11, 2012 9:36 am

To win this Saturday, the O has to show up. It is evident from the last three blow outs that the O hasn’t met expectations and, as a result, kept the D on the field too long. Even if the D can’t stop the other side, we are still in the game if we can score. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.

  86. Don Weir October 11, 2012 9:42 am

    #75 Buffoman

Right on the money. Inclusion of the community for UH Athletics is key to advancement; these days it is mandatory to survival in a topsy turvy conference changing world as well as in a politically charged environment with bad press. The silo effect for UH Athletics is affecting the bottom line for fundraising.

I’m up here in Danville (No Cal) right now and parked in front of me at a shopping center was a SUV with an O’ahu high school decal in the back window. It made me think of the efforts (or lack thereof) on the mainland to include UH fans and alums with residences outside of Hawaii. I went to the USC reception and tailgate and I went to the SDSU tailgate. Most, if not all of the attendees were on one of the sponsored tours (USC game saw a signiiciant number of FB Alums however). I saw many employees on the UH expense account (whatever budget or Dept) standing around (together) and not interacting with fans and alums. There was a large number of UH fans outside of the ‘official’ tailgate in smaller groups tailgating and showing their UH pride (probably not the blonde referenced in the other day’s blog). What a great opportunity to ‘meet and greet’!!

This is also true at the SDSU game and at home games. Nice to have a field pass or a Press Level ‘All Area’ pass but in these times even more import to be in the stands recognizing donors (support club members)and players parents and welcoming fans.

When UH is on the road there needs to be a well planned outreach program. When coaches are on the road recruiting there needs to be a coordinated effort (with the coaches) to bring alums and fans in to help them feel integrated into the UH Athletics Community. Off season fan gatherings can bring in badly needed $$ to programs.

I will see you in the stands when I get home for the Boise game.

    GO WARRIORS!!

Please excuse any typos as I am trying to get this off before my cousins start tailgating for the Athletics game before leaving the house.

    BJ Penn,

If that’s what it takes to get the boys fired up for homecoming then so be it, but what does BJ have to do with football??? Why not have some past UH players as honorary captains, wouldn’t it be more fitting? Like say ask maybe one of the warrior boys who made it to the NFL ranks. Like the Nogas or somebody like that? Oh well hope BJ can show the boys what making somebody tap out is all about!

I believe its a good idea to get recognized members of our community involved in the football program. The young team relates to guys like BJ who is a warrior in his own right.

Kids look up to him and he will no doubt speak about getting hyped for a match yet maintaining your cool. This isn’t only about football its about life. How about suggesting a few more inspirational types to be honorary captains. Let’s see? I like Jake Shimabukuro, Shane Victorino, Da Bruddahs, Da Rock etc.

  92. tommui October 11, 2012 10:17 am

#86 DON WEIR – right as always!

Those “employees on the UH expense account’ obviously need training in correct PR – or are they taking their examples from the top UH leadership?

  96. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2012 10:37 am

Chow actually met with Al Noga and had planned to name him as a captain for the Nevada game. But the proposal was nixed by higher-ups.

There will be some interesting old-timers who will serve as captains for the final thee home games.

  97. Bigislandkurt October 11, 2012 10:37 am

    Da Bradduhs are inspirational?

I’d much prefer former Rainbows, Rainbow warriors, or warriors to serve as honorary captains.

    BIK

  98. Bigislandkurt October 11, 2012 10:39 am

My goodness, what in the world did the Nogas ever do to warrant the cold shoulder from the higher-ups?

Al and Niko brought national notoriety to Manoa. Time to bury whatever hatchet is there and move on.

    BIK

  99. Da Punchbowl Kid October 11, 2012 10:45 am

    BIK:

Not sure what happened 30 years ago, but it does seem like there’s no way they’re getting any official recognition.

    It’s a shame.

It’s also a double shame because Niko Noga was in town last month, so there could have been an Al-Niko tribute.

  101. Bigislandkurt October 11, 2012 10:46 am

In this day and age, Al and Niko Noga would have probably been an OSU Beaver and a Utah Ute respectively. We were the beneficiaries of good timing. Back in the days when very little was known about that football recruiting hotbed in the middle of the Pacific O.

    BIK

To get the peeps into the stadium – have a concert afterwards…

    Whatever it takes.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

i wonder if hawaii fans would BOO Stevie Wonder if he ever came to Hawaii?

  107. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2012 10:49 am

    There was a coach.

He was a total okole puka.

    Then he dies.

They tell me to write his obit.

Oh, there were stories that would have illuminated all of his ills.

But I left all of the negatives out. Life is precious. Celebrate the goodness in people. Besides, obits are for the survivors, the loved ones.

Sometimes you have to take the high road.

  108. Hilo Moon October 11, 2012 10:50 am

#86 – Also, brilliant ideas and all seem very “doable.”

  109. Hilo Moon October 11, 2012 10:52 am

Sorry, I forgot to give credit and thank the brilliant thinkers — Powder Puff and Don Weir.

  110. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2012 10:52 am

I’m with some of the past posters.

I’d rather see some of the local entertainers get together and put on a concert.

A concert was a great idea.

What all of this proves is there’s no way the state should turn over Aloha Stadium to UH.

  111. AlaWai October 11, 2012 10:53 am

Success in the community does not only come from past football players. Inspiration can come from a number of sources, including those who are humorous. Past Warriors would be great. The question I raised is about relating with the team. For Military Night for example I hope that Wounded Warriors from the service are named honorary captains. Da Bruddahs was posted to see if anyone was paying attention. Mahalo.

  112. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2012 10:57 am

Every time I hear a baseball announcer gush about a “good at-bat” because a batter fouls off five pitches, I’m reminded of how Nate Robinson won the NBA Slam Dunk contest on his 14th dunk attempt. And that’s the beauty of football. You get three chances to do it right or else you have to punt.

  113. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2012 10:58 am

It’s good to have the debate about worthy captains.

At least this year there are honorary captains.

  114. SAWARRIOR October 11, 2012 11:01 am

    79. IMO….nah, Hawaii 5-0 stars not from Hawaii. if 5-0 stars represent the warriors with the H logo hat, jersey etc… on tv then yes, but no. Magnum PI, Thomas Magnum represented Detroit with his Detroit Tigers baseball cap in a lot of Magnum episodes, i wish one of the 5-0 guys would do that.

BTW- if dog is named honorary captain, chow is done! lol

  115. lava October 11, 2012 11:01 am

Cut through the spin. Or has “Noga” not been the subject of controversy, to say the least. I can see admin’ (as dubious as they themselves are) commenting, “oh, no ESPECIALLY not now.”

Get all the great QBs together, Brennan (admittedly, still “on the controversial bubble” so to speak), Chang (if available), Gabriel, Moniz, etc., let ’em be co-captains — they could actually accord some practical advice during the game, heh.

Heh. Amongst genuine fans in a Stevie Wonder concert? I doubt those few would try. Both sets’d have to pay their hard-earned money for tickets.

  119. Stretch October 11, 2012 11:04 am

The fireworks show after the SDSU game was the best I’ve seen in person.

The average attendance for SDSU games is about 20k, but with the fireworks show, there are over 50k. SDSU pays for the fireworks show but for 30k additional sold tickets, it’s worth it. Most of the crowd came into the stadium well after the game started, mainly just to see the fireworks, not the actual game.

  120. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2012 11:04 am

I thought this would be a good year to induct Gabriel, Rolo, Chang and Brennan as a group.

The ailing person retires to the bedroom to rest a nd the gathering continue to chat hopefully. There is one aquaintence in the room. He then says, I know you guy all trying to feel good but you know there’s no way thing going change. Just to be the contrarian, of course.

  137. Kevin October 11, 2012 11:58 am

Another clueless and thoughtless article in Civil Beat about suggesting to get rid of UH football…

People need to understand what world we live in.

Cut football, yes you can eliminate some women’s sports due to Title IX.

But make sure you keep tabs on what is left because:

All Division I schools must field athletes in at least seven sports for men and seven for women or six for men and eight for women, with two team sports for each gender.[

    UH mens programs:

    Football

    Basketball

    Baseball

    Swimming and Diving

    Golf

    Tennis

    Volleyball

    UH womens programs:

    Basketball

    Softball

    Swimming and Diving

    Cross Country

    Track and Field

    Water Polo

    Golf

    Tennis

    Volleyball

    Sand Volleyball

    Soccer

    *Sailing

    Co-Ed:

    Cheerleading

    *Sailing (2nd team???)

*The sailing thing confuses me when it comes to classifications because they have a co-ed and just a women’s team apparently.

Anyway then you have the rule about two sports male and female for each which is technically not followed by UH because we do not have men’s soccer and no mens cross country and track and field teams. Aint no mens sand volleyball team either.

Softball and baseball are really two different sports, but I cannot recall seeing D1 programs with baseball teams that do no yield softball teams off the top of my head, but I have seen programs that have softball but no baseball. So if there are programs at the D1 level that have baseball and no softball then they are considered two different sports because they actually are.

Plus factor in that conference memberships require that you field certain sports. Violate that and you could be out of the conference.

Not that easy to eliminate UH football and some women’s programs without creating some interesting challenges OUTSIDE of avoiding Title IX requirements.

  138. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2012 12:30 pm

A while ago, Mike Cavanaugh was training Akebono to be an offensive lineman. They had a bunch of workouts at UH. Alas, nothing came of it.

So here’s the tie: Chris Kobayashi, son of one of the Berts, is the agent for both Cav and Akebono.

  139. letsgowarriors October 11, 2012 12:30 pm

tsai, tell the coaches to inquire why Jalen Saunders can be immediately eligible but Taylor Graham cant.

See that with students and administrators.

  156. Kevin October 11, 2012 1:03 pm

  157. Kevin October 11, 2012 1:05 pm

Killing football kills UH at the D1 level.

Mens basketball and wahine volleyball cannot produce the income needed to keep other program afloat on their own.

FCS football for UH? Even dumber. FCS teams cannot afford the trip here and the drastically reduced income on our end (who is going to pay to watch UH at the FCS level with an all FCS conference schedule) cant afford to fly them here or sustain us going to the mainland.

    End of discussion.

  158. maddog50 October 11, 2012 1:07 pm

  160. Old School Dave October 11, 2012 1:09 pm

Ex newscaster, Bob Jones has been like that little kid shooting spitballs calling for UH to drop football. People seem so passionate to kill off something that they are not invested in.

Everyone has opinions, most are crap.

  164. madeinhawaii October 11, 2012 1:15 pm

I agree.. killing football would only make UH competitive among Chaminade, HPU, BYU Hawaii and HILO. School spirit which is waning would me expunged. Forget alumni support in the years to come. Then watch as UH becomes a bigger burden on the State without the joy and excitement that it’s athletic programs provides for 100’s of thousands. Yes, 100’s… those who listen to the radio while working two jobs… those who sit in the bars and restaurants to watch… those in the comfort of home with PPV… and those on the mainland watching wherever they can find a feed.

The intrinsic value that athletics brings to the people of the State of Hawaii is far greater than and single UH Department. Yet, it’s all part of the package that makes up UH. And if it is marketed right, nurtured properly from the top down.. not bottom up, it would be the factor that unites all students and alumni to create a better, far superior University system.

  167. Kevin October 11, 2012 1:21 pm

Noticed some of these types calling for the end of football at UH can be seen attending other sports. Some might even be season ticket holders there.

They just do not understand the economics of NCAA D1 athletics.

Many sports at UH have carried their own weight via on the field/court success and having their student-athletes complete their education at Manoa, but in the end, that doesnt matter to the $$$$$.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people here who are of the “no can” line of thinking here locally. 172. madeinhawaii October 11, 2012 1:27 pm

Football’s biggest asset isn’t the $$$ from ticket and TV sales that some might think. Rather, it’s in the amount of school spirit that a successful campaign can generate. Witness what our 2oo7 season produced. How many people with Hawaii connections converged in New Orleans? How many UH alumni suddenly poked their heads out of the shells and said.. HEY! DAS MY SCHOOL! (Poked em right back in when we lost badly..but there’s always next time) …

Imagine what consecutive successful seasons like that would have been like in terms of school spirit, alumni support and gatherings throughout the US and World? Too bad, our administration wasn’t capable of running with the ball when it was handed to them. And the whole thing just went poof!…

Now, the only thing we have left in our Branding is the “H”… and even that isn’t copyrighted… LOL..

  173. 3-Prong October 11, 2012 1:32 pm

ST: Kind of question your recommended inclusion of Rolo with the likes of Brennan, Chang, and Gabriel. Other than the one year when Rolo “lit it up” and some good work as an OC, why the inclusion? Would replace him with Carter if anyone.

  174. d1shima October 11, 2012 1:32 pm

    RIP Beano Cook

  175. Shoko October 11, 2012 1:34 pm

There’s always a few people at every school that think dropping football is the solution. Just like there are people that want to fire a first-year head coach after his inaugural

season. I think these folks that think this way are in the minority.

I just had a not-too-dangerous thought. Since I read that during the singing of the National Anthem at the San Diego game, there was a Air National Guard C-130 Hurcules that did a flyby. Wonder if UH ever thought of doing a military flyby for Military Night. Hawaii Air National Guard has F-15, F-22, C-130, C-17 etc. that could do it, if agreed upon, that would certainly be entertaining.

  176. jimmy the lock October 11, 2012 1:46 pm

C’mon UH Circle of Honor committee, get your act together. There are many deserving UH football players. Maa was one of the last football players inducted.

    @Shoko

Last flyby I remember was a helicopter and it came early…or was that late. I’m sure the Navy, Air Force, Marines, Army, Army Reserve, National Guard, and Coast Guard can coordinate a flyby with various aircraft. And bring in a howitzer to shoot after scores. Or USS Missouri.

  177. wafan October 11, 2012 1:53 pm

Firing from the Mighty Mo would shake the stadium rust off.

    Poof!

    No stadium.

  178. Shoko October 11, 2012 1:53 pm

Yea, that howitzer would be nice after every WARRIOR score. Anyway, the only thing that would stop a planned flyby would be money. Gas being so damn expensive nowadays.

  179. Kevin October 11, 2012 1:56 pm

    Living in imagination land…

Anyone went to the Blue Angels airshow?

They have a sequence where a bomber simulates a drop and then they set off this amazing and powerful pyro display called the “wall of fire” to simulate a bomb going off.

How intense would it be if we were able to coordinate that exact same sequence for that game against UNLV as part of the intro and after the fire settles down, the football team emerges behind it and walks thru the smoke to make their entrance.

Yeah yeah.. I know, its something out of a Michael Bay movie and the logistics and simple science of it would lead to sending an entire football team to the ER for severe burns, but just a random thought. 😆

Years ago we used to have big Fireworks Displays at Aloha Stadium on the 4th of July. It was after the Hawaii Islander Baseball Games and would somtimes draw a crowd of about 35,000 people. (I believe the Hawaii Islander General Manager at the time was Fred Whitacre). He used to have some good promotions.

There needs to be a change with the democratic and republican conventions.

First of all, any idiot can go up in front of their own supporters and belch out what they and their own party’s special intrest groups want to hear.

I think level-headed Americans want to see the democratic candidate in front of republicans and the republican candidate in front of democrats.

Lets see how your ideas and approaches really comes across.

    The result?

Proof that the s*** they shuffle around in the Oval Office every four years is the same ole crap regardless of political party. Their party’s own needs comes first, the American public… and the dying economy… LAST.

A wise man once said: “you have selfish and ignorant voters, you have selfish and ignorant citizens.. garbage in, garbage out.”

  207. Kevin October 11, 2012 4:43 pm

Who said anything about a Green Party?

They’ll never win. They’ll never win the popularity contest.

Back when Panos Prevedouros was running for Mayor, he had the best ideas (in my eyes) and on the hot topic of rail, he is in Ben Cayetano’s ear giving out what I believe to be smart fiscal sense and coming from someone that does commute in the worst hours of traffic… I believe in what will work. A 5+ billion dollar zipper lane confined to a small area doesn’t work.

But anyway, I believe Prevedourus is now a republican. Not green party.

But this is a great example of logic losing out to a popularity contest. A mayor runs a city. What better guy for the job that someone who is a freaking civil engineer!!! Republicans and Democrats… the bulk are career politicians.. same ole same ole.

Too many people are convinced you need to be labeled. Left, right, “moderate”, blah blah blah..

    Where is the common sense?

I was reminded recently about how that crazy rape baby justifying bible belt nut bag hit welfare reform on the head a few years ago. The rest of his outdated trash can leave. But he had the correct stance on restricting welfare.

Obama saying small businesses owes the government for all their success… B.S.!!! Even though I attended Shidler Business College at Manoa, you don’t need a business degree to understand that!

Yet, if you’re a lefty or a righty you must conform. I got sick of this garbage and 9-11 had to do with it. Seen friends of mine that were once sensible getting swayed with extreme left wing propaganda from Michael Moore’s “documentary”. Blind loyalty to the left wing cause is typical of people my age yet most people my age do not see the blatant exploitation of that. Same thing when I encounter extreme conservatism at the office. The fanaticism is the same, just on different sides.

If seeking a sense of logic in “politics” is labeled as being GREEN or somehow I am now a card-carrying member of the green party then so be it.

Let the color green stand for the vomit I regurgitate from the stench coming from the left and the right.

I find it amusing that people believe that the two party system works when they really only believe what their party does is the end all and be all of what should be done.

    re: Charity Navigator

What a coincidence. Tonight in class we had a guest speaker, former CEO of one of Hawaii’s largest nonprofits who talked about npos and metrics/rating systems.

I know cee808 stated that Charity Navigator did not have any background info on UH Foundation. However, Charity Navigator did a Hawaii-focused rating of nonprofits a couple years back. UH Foundation was one of those “studied” and apparently received 4-star ratings.

Without going into a lot of detail and numbers, Charity Navigator much like the BBB is numbers based and does not focus much on mission metrics.

  212. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2012 5:46 pm

Sorry but the ideas proposed by Panos was an atrocious attempt at finding a option to rail. They were car-centric and did nothing at best to address long term planning goals set forth in the Development and Sustainable Communities Plan.

Build the ramps.. build the rail structures and depots.. but do not install the rails…. run dedicated buses over those tracks to use the same depots… when the ridership reaches a proper level, install the rails and trains. That way we save money and can use equipment we already have. We could furthermore stretch our money and build even more “tracks.” When all the “tracks” are completed and the ridership looks promising, install the rails. That way, there is real justification.

    A Grease…

My understanding is that China has been doing it this way for some time now. In smaller municipalities they build the ramps and future tracks without rails.. They use buses and when the ridership exceeds a minimum standard, they install the real thing. Sounds pretty logical to me. Just make sure the structures are dedicated.. no mixing of regular cars and vans…

Punahou is the only educational charity listed, and far as I can see.

    Morning, everyone!

Just wanted to say, “mahalo nui” for all your birthday wishes! Always good to be remembered by old and new friends, both near and far!

And despite all of us moving on in our years, a former First Sergeant of mine in Korea reminded me of something when he posted to my Facebook Wall. He said, “Happy birthday, young man! (Don’t you love it when someone can say that?)”

Had to laugh at it, not only ’cause it’s true, but because our lives are what we make of it, even in our day to day grind. I’m not as old as I sometimes feel, even though I am. Make sense? Yeah, thought so.

Take care, everyone! Love and miss you all! (Well, most of you!) Hahaha!

    Wafan…

After high school before leaving for Basic Training, some friends and I went to see Mel Cabang near Ala Moana.

One of the jokes he told had to do with “Bob”, as in bobbing for apples. When people would come in late, and his show was already underway, he’d embarrass everyone in each group for a few minutes each, before finally moving on with the rest of his show. He’d always ask the latecomers what their names were, and then make nasty jokes about it. It was a time when his jokes were as raunchy as ever. And you never wanted to get up to use the restroom during his show! Oh no!

    Ahhh… sweet memories!
