Big Wednesday

“Big Wednesday” was one of the best surf movies. Ever.

OK, on to today’s football practice:

• With roster cuts expected as early as next week, a full-contact 7-on-7 scrimmage was arranged for the final period of practice. Defensive back Gus Cunningham, battling for a roster spot, had two big hits — on wideout Jett Jasper and slotback Justin Clapp.

• Cornerback Terry Wilson, who was on the second-team defense, had his best practice of spring training. He is in line to earn a roster spot.

• Steven Christian appears to have made a smooth transition from cornerback to safety. He had an interception today, and played well in the Warriors’ two-deep coverage.

• Among the candidates for punt returner are Samson Anguay, Allen Sampson, Corey Paclebar and Tank Hopkins. Anguay suffered a bruised thigh during Monday’s practice, and did not work out today. He will play in Friday’s Warrior Bowl.

7Anguay

• Running back Joey Iosefa, who suffered a bruised thigh during the Oklahoma drill last week, missed his third consecutive practice. He also will be available for the Warrior Bowl. In his absence, John Lister picked up more reps. Lister has been impressive on screens ands wing passes; Sterling Jackson and Iosefa remain as the Warriors’ top blocking backs.

• Sampson continues to impress as a wideout. He’s not returning to slot.

• Slotback Kana Silva, who is seeking to earn a roster berth, made several big plays in drills and the 7-on-7 scrimmage. He’s deceptively fast.

• David Graves apparently is closing the gap on Shane Austin for the No. 2 quarterback’s job. Graves played well the first week of spring, struggled the second week, but has been doing well since the Warriors returned from spring break.

• Defensive tackle David Hafoka  said he still is awaiting word on his petition that would allow him to play in 2011.

• Dick Tomey, who coordinates special teams, did not attend practice because of “back issues.”

Good luck Kealoha, I hope you get drafted. Even if you don’t, I know you will be in the NFL and playing on Sundays in no time.

    Top five?

  6. Pauoa Boy April 13, 2011 6:56 am

Good to hear Kealoha is healed up and ready to go. He should catch on with an NFL team somewhere, his athleticism is kind of freakish knowing where he started from.

  7. WarriorMojo April 13, 2011 6:59 am

    Top Ten, again!

    Warriors ROCK!

David Lefotu, are you going to be a four year starter?

Promises are only good if they REMEMBER to follow through with it.

  14. Kekoa April 13, 2011 7:41 am

My how times have changed. In the 60’s, receiving a draft notice was considered a death sentence. Signs popped up all over colleges across the USA with slogans like *Hell No!…We won’t Go!*

But the times, they are a changing. Tsigh of relief for Mr. Pilares. In his case, it means he could be earning fame & fortune soon.

  15. Michigan Warrior April 13, 2011 7:46 am

    Howzit, everyone.

Hoping for some good news from Bball LoI Day.

    Go get ’em, Pilares!

Out the door for a biz meeting… hopefully to return with some good news!

Welcome to Warrior Nation for the Warrior Basketball team signee’s so far… Gerry Blakes, Ronnie Stevens and Hauns Brereton. I hope Coach Gib’s got a couple more ballers on the radar to take us into the NCAA tourney this year… Never knew bruddah Hauns get Samoan bloodline, Talofa Uso…

  17. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2011 7:54 am

Practice indeed started at 7 this morning. Wasn’t sure if there was another secret survey.

  19. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 7:57 am

lol. ST is a suspicious kind of guy!

  20. Buffoman April 13, 2011 8:00 am

I am so very happy that we are paying REAL attention to the special teams unit. Coach Mac should be credited for seeing the deficiency and placing real emphasis in improving that area. Starting with the addition of Coach Tomey! Bold, intelligent move.

On another note, given the talk about the O-line, how deep are we and is the back up to the potential starter strong enough to step in should we face an unfortunate injury to the starter? I see lists, that’s not the question. The question is really the quality of play, strength, knowledge, hunger, meanness or the back up.

  21. seasider April 13, 2011 9:02 am

    #20 Buffoman

Barring injuries, the Offensive Line will be a solid 8 deep, make that 9 if Austen Hansen receives another year of eligibility.

Presently the starting offensive line is LT Clayton Laurel, LG Brett Leonard, Center Matagisili Lefiti, RG Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, and RT a battle between Levi Legay and Sean Shigematsu. Pushing for starting berths, David Lefotu and Jordan Loeffler.

Per Shaw there are up to “13 linemen who are in the mix for playing time”.

Size, youth, and athleticism…the future looks good.

  22. papajoe2 April 13, 2011 9:13 am

I’m getting antsy. Hard to wait for the new recruits in basketball. I’m still waiting for that point guard, but I understand it may take a few days or even weeks. What about the coaches son? Is he good enough for Div. 1? I know he’s not a point guard, but will he help? Also, will his scholarship be waived since he is a coaches son? What will happen about the # of scholarships available? I thought we only had 3. Gotta go now.

ps. I didn’t forget about Warrior football. I hope to hear about today’s practice later on when I get back. And now……………..I will cruise.

  23. Garret April 13, 2011 9:15 am

Great news about Kealoha! I hope that gives him the momentum he needs to move up in the draft.

  24. Garret April 13, 2011 9:17 am

Looks like JJ found a way to get around the ban that prevented Colt from throwing in front of NFL scouts at UH’s Pro Day and prevented RGM from catching passes in front of NFL scouts. I hope that the Eagles scout likes Colt and RGM.

    • Wednesday’s practice included several visitors: Hartford Colonials (and former Hawaii assistant) coach Jerry Glanville, former Hawaii and Washington Redskins quarterback Colt Brennan and former Hawaii and Miami Dolphins WR Ryan Grice-Mullen.

    • After practice, WR Aldrick Robinson (and Grice-Mullen) caught passes from Brennan. Paying close attention was a scout from the Philadelphia Eagles.

  25. Garret April 13, 2011 9:22 am

It is quite possible that another reason why JJ had Colt throw today is that Glanville might want Colt to QB his team.

  26. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 9:24 am

Garret, very interesting news! Wishing the best for Colt and RGM!

  27. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 9:40 am

If Colt gets hired by Glanville, will that be better than playing in the CFL? More money and exposure, perhaps?

  28. NorthShoreFan April 13, 2011 9:41 am

    Guud morning errybody…

Great news on the recruiting front for Coach Gib..

Brereton commits to Warriors..Brereton has Samoan ancestry from his mother’s side of the family, and his great-uncle is the well-known actor/entertainer Al Harrington.

Brereton averaged 26.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game during the final 14 games of the season, when the team made a run to the playoffs.

Looking at his pic…Samoan…in which toe?!@#@?!!…LOL! Aloha Hauns! Welcome to the program!

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid April 13, 2011 10:03 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    Great news for Kelaoha!

Love the posts from others here which express excitement about the current Warriors. Things are looking promising.

Way cool of JJ to set up another look for Colt and company. JJ works hard to take care of his former players. I hope Colt and RGM have a chance to tear it up for Glanville. All Colt needs is a chance to show what he can do in game conditons at the pro level.

Big question: Who replaces the skill players? Hawaii is known for racking up big stats regardless of who’s playing, but the Warriors lost eight offensive starters, including WRs Greg Salas (1,889 yards, 14 TDs) and Kealoha Pilares (1,306 yards, 15 TDs) and RB Alex Green (1,562 yards, 19 TDs).http://www.rgj.com/article/20110413/SPORTS06/104130381/1459/FERNLEY04/Nevada-football-sneak-peek-WAC-teams-spring-camp?odyssey=nav|head

Got all the windows closed, but I still hear the drilling. GRRR.

  38. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 10:40 am

    SteveM,

I really don’t like to listen to karaoke, but I’ll definitely try to make it to the tailgates this year. Looking forward to it actually.

And, no, Al, I won’t be bringing Ted’s pie. I’ll probably cook up some chicken. People bring lots of desserts, anyway.

  39. NorthShoreFan April 13, 2011 10:40 am

    NSF,

haha! Yeah, must be heavenly to have a cool breeze wafting thru your open windows, with just a touch of dog poop!

Never mind, when the stench from my outdoor cat is too strong, I close the windows and turn on the a/c.

  43. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 11:07 am

    Advice?

That was hairlarious! I didn’t know Billy Ray Cyrus played pro sports.

  48. SteveM April 13, 2011 11:34 am

    RE: #38

gigi — I don’t like listen to karaoke too — on cruise ships, I stick my head in once and leave. But the Tsai-ko Tsingers are actually very good, and some surprisingly so. Those that don’t solo, sing as a group or sings along… and the soloist usually doesn’t mind… unusual, but that’s how it developed in the Genji private rooms in the first year and it carries over everywhere we go.

Of course, what happens at Karaoke Call stays at the Karaoke Call — unless the videos get posted on YouTube or Facebook. 🙄

There are around 20 Tsai-kos who could sing anywhere on stage (I’m not one). If the Tsai-kos were on a cruise, I think the Cruise Director would extend karaoke hours and hand us the keys. Not to mention the talent show where the winners video gets sent to corporate for a possible entertainment contract.

But send hubby to the Karaoke Call solo … we’ll give him an audition! 🙂

  49. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 11:37 am

    SteveM,

haha! No, you DON’T want to audition hubby. He’s already famous for singing off-key…

  50. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 11:41 am

I still remember the karaoke after a corporate banquet. Hubby sang so off-key, I was embarrassed. Everybody groaned, but he was oblivious to it all! lol

  51. kev-1 April 13, 2011 12:18 pm

This would be a great time for Colt to jump into the UFL (is that what its called?). People are going to be paying more attention to those types of leagues due to the NFL situation and the names of some of the coaches that they have brought in.

At least JJ is still in Colt’s corner.

  52. steve April 13, 2011 12:19 pm

gigi, there are Tsaikos who do very well at the mike. It is very enjoyable and with the appearance of Rasu Begasu, you’ll be treated to some enka music too. The evening will be a mix of all kinds of music. The good thing is if it gets to you, the door is jsut a dew steps away! lol….you probaly won’t need to though.

  55. bigislandkurt April 13, 2011 12:25 pm

I believe our Oline is a work in progress, but good progress nonetheless. The youth movement is on and my optimism is certainly assured. But I’d really like to get Austin Hansen back. Not looking good at this point, but would be good to get him back from his suspension.

Is WR Corey Lau no longer on the football team?

  65. Derek April 13, 2011 2:01 pm

It was a surprise to hear Hauns Brereton is commiting to UH. He was under the radar and in fact most people, me included, did not hear about him until this morning. But, it’s also a nice surprise. He’s a good student, has Hawaii ties, and he apprears to have some good stats in JC. I’d like to see his highlight film soon. With Dillon Biggs very solid to join the program, it appears Michael Harvey, SF, out of Feather River CC is out of the picture for a scholarship unless something else happens. The third scholarship likely will go to a PG or Combo Guard. Let’s stay tuned in for more news. After basketball recruiting is over, we can focus 100% on UH football. Looking forward to the 4+ deep depth chart. Also a big day is Saturday with Junior Day. Hopefully, these Juniors will end up being Warriors at next years signing period.

Looking forward to seeing Justin Vele in the summer. At the very least, I think he will be a force on special teams. This guy is a big hitter and he’s probably the top #1 recruit Mack got. I’m also high on Brenden Dailey and Kendrick Van Ackeren. Also, looking forward to seeing Promise Amadi and Chris Gant as receivers.

  66. NCAA April 13, 2011 2:01 pm

just a passing thought…if basketball allows for X number of scholarships, what happens, as in Miah’s case, where he is on a football scholarship and playing basketball too, how is the scholarships on the bball team calculated as? assuming bball they can only give so many scholies.

Scenario… supposing we have some others on football scholarship who also excel at hoops, can the bball team play them and accomodate more guys? ie. can give only nine scholies (what ever the number is) but have 3 more on the team with football scholies…

  74. Ralph April 13, 2011 2:44 pm

Na Wahine RPI is 58, down a few notches from last week.

They swept Nevada this past weekend but Nevada has a rating of 178, and our upcoming opponent La Tech’s RPI is 186

The following–Stevens & Blakes signed during the early signing period in the fall period, and Biggs and Brereton will or have already fax their LOI today–will be joining the Rainbow Warriors this fall:

Ronnie Stevens, PF, 6-8/225, Serra HS, CA (Rated as No. 13 Prep in California)

Gerry Blakes, G, 6-4/175, Morningside HS, CA

Dillon Biggs, SF, 6-7, Dorsey HS, CA (Rated as 7th best SF in California)

Hauns Brereton, PF, 6-7/210, Jr, Western Nebraska CC (1st team all-district, 3rd Team JC AA)

Will the last scholarschip go to: Michael Harvey, SF, 6-=5/190, Jr, Feather River CC, CA, Tyler McDaniels, F, 6-9/220, Jr Georgia Perimeter College, or Anthony Odonsi, G, 6-4/200, Travis HS, Texas.

#82…hope it didn’t seem like I was making light of the incident. How does one try to make things right after this? Every action creates a reaction, cause and effect. Just trying to put myself in their shoes. I’m pretty sure both parties are feeling remorseful. Healing thoughts going out to both.

Michigan Wariror, great news! Hope he can get to the point where he can attend a Na Wahine softball game in the future! Would like to meet him. He’s a trooper!

  97. Kazz April 13, 2011 4:22 pm

    WOW!!!

With one of the best softball seasons on record for NMSU, I guess they really want to keep this thing intact huh???

    http://www.ktsm.com/sports/nohara-suspended-reinstated-to-nmsu-softball-team

The following is a statement from NMSU Athletic Director Dr. McKinley Boston:

“Hoku had been suspended from the softball team for violation of team and athletic social misconduct policy. Hoku has since been reinstated to the team based on a hearing she had with the Department’s social misconduct committee in which they recommended missed games and community service. I accepted the committie’s recomendations pending the ajudication of the case in the legal system.”

In regards to the NMSU softball player…i am just embarrassed that yet another person is giving a negative impression of people from Waimanalo. I for one am from there (born & raised), and it’s just really tragic to keep battling the communities current image.

Happy Birthday Kara…and HAPPY BIRTHDAY too to Manoa Mist!!!! 🙂

  102. RedZone April 13, 2011 4:36 pm

Dick Tomey as stated above is having problems with his back. He was on the radio today and said that he had a doctors appointment. He has missed practices but hopes to be back soon.

    RedZone:

I think this is paving the groundwork for a better airline seat.

  104. RedZone April 13, 2011 4:48 pm

ST he said he was at the Wahine BB banquet. I think he gave a speach. He said he could not sit down and had to stand. So I hope they have hand rails for those who want to stand on the plane like they do on the bus.

  105. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 4:56 pm

    RedZone,

He can always stand in the rear of the plane. Hubby did that on flights to and from Tokyo/Hong Kong last year when he couldn’t stretch his legs in coach and he got leg cramps.

  106. academia em sorocaba April 13, 2011 5:04 pm

  107. Manoa Mist April 13, 2011 5:12 pm

Thanks Powder Puff. That Kara has a great birthday.

So all last year I’m thinking I’m 51 and how much cooler 52 sounds. So I get my insurance papers in the mail last week and they’re telling me I’m going to be 53.

Yikes. I’ve lost a whole year.

Time sure flies when you don’t know what’s happening around you…

  108. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 5:16 pm

    Manoa Mist,

wait til you are 65 and qualify for medicare.

  109. whitey April 13, 2011 5:29 pm

i don’t think you can stand in the rear of the plane even if you have a health problem as it is prohibited by federal air regs. on the other hand, airline seats were supposed to be designed ergonocially, but it is not especially on all flights out of hawaii.

  110. whitey April 13, 2011 5:31 pm

i don’t think you need to wait till you are 65 to feel uncomfortable on all flights out of hawaii. the only true option is to fly business or first class, but then again, the fares are much more than coach.

  111. whitey April 13, 2011 5:32 pm

absolutely no standing around near the cr in business/first class section.

  112. whitey April 13, 2011 5:34 pm

if coach tomey has a major back problem, he should be in business/first class. i have no qualms with that. i also think that any player who has major injuries at an away game and is on the flight home should be in business/first class seats.

  113. whitey April 13, 2011 5:36 pm

getting to know the flight attendents personally may help, but no guarantee. right al!!

  114. whitey April 13, 2011 5:39 pm

da warriors basically travel home via las on the 1:30 am flight which is scheduled, but usually some seats available in first. there is a premium, but i am sure that it can be worked out with hawaiian air. it just takes some legwork by the trip coordinator.

  115. whitey April 13, 2011 5:40 pm

ok, that’s enough info, so how was practice today????

Fox is giving the Big 12 $1.17 bil for their 2nd-choice TV rights. That is an increase of 350%! Plus, they split the money 10 ways instead of 12 ways so every school gets more money.

So, the first choice TV rights (ABC/ESPN) get $60 mil/year and the 2nd-choice TV rights get $90 mil/year…but when the first choice TV rights (the 2015 football season is the last under that contract) are up for bid, the Big 12 should get at least double the money and they will be making more than the SEC and Big 10. In other words, the Big 12 won’t be falling apart like so many people were predicting before.

If BYU and another school get an invitation to join the Big 12 before the 1st-choice TV rights, they will really cash in! The first choice TV rights includes the Big 12 title game, so the Big 12 won’t get any extra money if they expand before that contract is being negotiated (about 3 years from now).

Since there are only FIVE scholarships for this 2011 Class, which one of the SIX will be a walk-on; or which one of the 8 scholarship returnees (Bobby Miles, Zane Johnson, Joston Thomas, Vander Joaquim, Trevor Wiseman, Dominick Brumfield, Bo Barnes, Davis Rozitis) will be relinquishing their scholarship for the good of the program.

Reportedly, Coach Gib has stated he expects everyone back.

  134. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 8:56 pm

    Whitey,

I am not sure where you get your info from, but there were several tall men (besides hubby) who were standing in the cabin during flight. No flight attendants told them to sit down.

They sat down only during take off and landing and when food and beverages were being served.

  135. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 8:58 pm

Seating in coach on Japan Airlines was extremely tight for hubby.

We hope Hawaiian Airlines will be better when we fly to the Big Island in July, but we doubt it.

Coach is coach and you get what you pay for.

  136. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 9:00 pm

Anyway… Best wishes and speedy recovery for Coach Tomey!

  137. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 9:03 pm

Not to mention those hulky, bulky football players!

    Advice, please.

  140. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2011 9:09 pm

UH student-athletes can’t receive a first-class ticket because that is considered to be a perk, and the NCAA doesn’t approve of perks.

As for whether UH coaches or administrators fly first class, there’s no NCAA rule against it. Maybe there’s a UH rule or state rule, but I doubt it.

  141. Stephen Tsai April 13, 2011 9:11 pm

In case anybody is interested, UH volleyball will sign two players — but not for another couple of days. They’ll be sending out the letters of intent this week.

  142. gigi-hawaii April 13, 2011 9:13 pm

    ST,

Do the student-athletes have an empty seat between them in coach? Otherwise, I can imagine how cramped they must feel.

Is it any wonder that it is difficult to win on the road under those circumstances?

  143. Slugger April 13, 2011 9:28 pm

    ST ~

I’ll wait to hear about the MVB signees… from out of the country? in country? on island?

  144. Warriorbacker April 13, 2011 9:41 pm

Stephan are the two VB players signing Dominic Lile a setter from San Clemente, CA and Jan Philipp Marks from Germany?

Was that a recruit sitting on the bench during Saturday’s match against USC? Tall strong looking kid with facial hair??? Didn’t look like a high school kid, perhaps JC or international, looked like a middle blocker?

#95… NSF… If I’m home and he’s mobile, I’ll definitely bring him to some UH events. Several years ago, I flew him to Vegas to catch a Timmy Chang/Chad Owens UH game. We ended up losing that game. Crazy too… lots of fights in the stands. We sat in back of Coach Wallace and his entourage, way up in the nosebleed section.

Anyways, yeah, thanks… hope he can recover enough to continue to enjoy life and his family. He’s on his way, but it’s just at a snail’s pace at the moment. Then again, positive news is much better than those constant setbacks he’d been suffering weeks ago.

Howzit and mahalo, Wafan! Yep, just gotta keep moving forward.

I hate this time of year. We go up near 80, followed by frost advisory days. (“So, if you started your garden, be sure to cover things or they’ll die.” As our weather guys on the news like to say.) Kids usually end up with colds/sinus allergy stuff, etc.

I usually end up starting our garden in May, which leaves little growing time for stuff like watermelons. Guess I could make a temporary greenhouse with some plastic sheeting, but we’ve got too many wild animals like squirrels, rabbits, and even cats that wander through our back yard. They like to dig and rip things up… especially those squirrels.

Dayton’s website has Deshawn Mitchell committing to Hawaii. Question is, do we have another scholarship to go around for a much needed point guard? More news for sure. Arnold knows that we really need somebody who can be the next “holy grail”. Would Odunsi be that person? Also, there is also Tyler McDaniels out there.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  342. Rosetta stone languages April 25, 2011 8:52 am

I noticed a thing as properly about th is on unique weblog.Exciting, your linear perspective on it is diametrically opposite to what I go through prior to. I am even now reflecting above the conflicting points of view, but I am tipped heavily toward yours. And in any case, that is certainly what is so terrific about modern day democracy and the marketplace of ideas on-line.

  343. asics tigers April 25, 2011 9:03 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  344. cheap christian louboutin April 26, 2011 3:22 pm

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  346. links of london jewelry April 27, 2011 3:48 am

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
