**MWC and BIG 12 Merger Article** – repost

Interesting article from a Texas Tech point of view about conference realignment.

Basically the assumption leaves 5 schools (TTech, Kansas, K-State, Iowa St., Baylor) leftover from the B12 meltdown. MWC-10 + 5 = 15 schools + 1 school from CUSA/WAC/BYU?

It’s a *HUGE* assumption that some of these 5 don’t get invited to the Big LEast or some other AQ conference and that Texas goes Indy. Texas going Indy would be great for the MWC IMO. TTech would be homeless and PAC12 ain’t taking TTech by itself.

If we MUST go to 16, this would be the best schools to do it with and would give MWC a better than good basketball conference. Maybe Hawaii gets asked to go All-In with Olympic sports or Texas goes Indy and puts Olympic into these MWC/BIG-16.

    _ _ _ _ _ _

“The question that no one seems to be asking is what happens to the other 52 FBS schools (not including the 4 independents)? Does anyone think that those schools left out of one of the projected super conferences are going to take this lying down? If you think that the legal mess A&M has stirred up with between the Big XII schools and the SEC is ugly, wait for the law suits that will be filed if 52 former potentially contending schools get shut out.”

“That’s right. If things start to implode, I could see a merger between the remnants of the Big 12 and the MWC. Bringing in Boise State and Air Force would not be a bad thing. Texas will do as Texas pleases and may end up independent. That is fine by me. I would take a 14 team combo of the MWC and former Big 12. It would be sure to be an automatic qualifying conference, the MWC already has its own network, and the combination would give room for a new round of TV negotiations. It leaves a lot in the air, but would create a conference with enough power programs to be relevant and a good stage for Tech.”

Responding to the post yesterday about the NCAA “dying” with these BCS programs creating their own world.

    I say…

    TRY! I LIKE SEE.

Should they want to separate themselves from NCAA governance, I say treat them all like a professional organization.

Let them, get their own funding, get their own stadiums, etc…

Should a school like Texas leave the NCAA along with other big programs like Florida or Ohio State, each insitution should be VOID of having any association with the program. Complete seperation. Those schools should offer NO scholarships, staffing and all relationships with the educational institution be VOID.

Basically, if they wanna run a “minor” football league, let them. Current TV contracts ARE NULL.

    Yeah, I like SEE…

  18. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 8:42 am

I’d like to think this makeup is semi-realistic and would give us enough juice to get the MWC AQ status.

    MWC-12 East Division

    AF

    UWyo

    CSU

    UNM

    TTU

SMU or BU (Need Texas school here)

    MWC-12 West Division

    SDSU

    UNR

    UNLV

    UH

    CSUF

    BSU

If we want to go to 14, add BYU(if) and someone out west that I have yet to figure out. I don’t know if BYU would like to be in the West division though.

  19. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 8:46 am

    Kevin,

NCAA is governed by the institutions they govern.

Super-16’s creating their own organization to govern themselves wouldn’t be a crazy new idea. It would be the NCAA in a scaled down model with a focus on only football or all of those conferences sports.

The only thing that they would have to adhere to externally in terms of sports-related rules would be Title IX.

I just saw a picture of an Oregon ticket for this weekend’s game and on the bottom it said “Wear Yellow”. Pretty neat idea to get all the fans on the same page in regards to what color to wear to the game. Any thoughts, or do we assume that we always wear green here?

I’d like to know if they breakaway what kind of responsibility (if any) do they have to the other 52 non-bcs schools like Hawaii.

My #16 post quoted that the 52 schools could possibly take some sort of legal action against the breakaway schools. Off course this is not going as far as the formation of a new Association. But you get my point.

Not sure if there are grounds to such claims, but if so I would like to know more about it.

    Tommui? You there?

  24. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 8:54 am

    #21,

I always assume Green. But it never hurts to remind people. They also have a white-out at one point I think.

That’s actually a pretty good, direct, and rather economical way of getting the word out.

  25. Kevin September 8, 2011 8:54 am

They won’t have to adhere to Title IX, if those FOOTBALL programs succeed from the school to succeed from the NCAA governance.

If they wanna act as their own world, they should have NO ties to college athletics because it’s not, it’s a professional sports environment they yearn for.

All this crap, is really a bunch of athletic directors and coaches acting like professionals like the NFL under the guise of college athletics and academics.

    #25,

If its the semi-pro league idea that some have talked about then yeah I agree with you.

But from what I have read some have said they want to continue to be a college level league but with a new organization to govern themselves and the bowl games. In which case it would be just like the NCAA but with whatever rules they decide upon.

I think it would be a great way to get the word out. While not everyone may get the word via the normal mediums, the one thing everyone will see is their tickets.

  29. Pomai September 8, 2011 9:09 am

It will never happen, FED and State money is involved.

  30. Haleakala September 8, 2011 9:09 am

Yes, there will be major changes in conference affiliations in the near future! Like it has been mentioned, the talk is about 4 super conferences with 16 teams each. Hopefully there will be five with Hawaii in one of them. It is speculated that there might be a Mountain West/ Conference USA merger. However that will still leave out some teams currenlty in these conferences if it will become a 16 team super conference. There will be lots of questions that will need to be answered. Yes, what happens to the independents like Notre Dame and BYU. I suspect that there will be legal intervention including that from some members of Congress. Hawaii just needs to continue winning to ensure that it will be a part of the future in college football!

Here is another take of the situation from a columnist with a Las Vegas paper.

Are you referring to the semi-pro league or the breakaway from NCAA to form new collegiate sports federation type thingy?

  34. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 9:12 am

    #30,

If the leagues go to 20, I could see Hawaii in the PAC-20. That’s an obscene number though lol.

  35. Haleakala September 8, 2011 9:20 am

    #34

Its all about TV ratings and money. Maybe Hawaii should keep on cultivating the Far East market by playing games in Tokyo, visiting China, etc. Far Eastern interest in Hawaii sports may make Hawaii more valuable in the eyes of the conference and network decision makers.

  36. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 9:27 am

    #34,

Unfortunate isn’t it. I hope we can work out that game in Osaka. Might be a start to some really good things for us in the future.

  37. Kevin September 8, 2011 9:28 am

What I’m saying is if you take all the personel of each of those big name programs and they go off and start a semi-pro league, then it’s do-able.

    COMPLETE SEPERATION from the institution.

    Nobody can stop them.

If they want to conduct their own separate “league” under governance of the NCAA AS IS, then it shouldn’t be allowed and there should be a MASSIVE legal revolt from all the other institutions exempt from their “country club”.

So I think Pomai is referring to a break-away.

  38. Kevin September 8, 2011 9:31 am

No. This should be a black and white NO.

At some point the NCAA needs to put a stop to this crap and allow their testicles to finally drop out of their bodies.

  39. madeinhawaii September 8, 2011 9:34 am

Maybe the NCAA is a “she”?

ST- make sure you grab a wonderful belated Birthday gift from the Northwest for your roommate back home.

  41. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 9:40 am

    #37,

I agree that they shouldn’t be part of the NCAA if they want to form their own league.

I had no idea there were things like the NCCAA (National Christian Colleges) that govern college sports for 100 Christian based colleges and USCAA. They don’t come under NCAA governance.

However some schools do on occasion play cross-Association teams or have dual affiliations for some reason with NCAA etc.

I think this is the route they will eventually take.

  42. A-House September 8, 2011 9:42 am

Does not title IX apply to all entities that accept/use Federal funds?

If yes, then “conference” affiliation” would not matter. Cannot see how a super conference, no matter how powerful, can avoid Federal and/or State statutes.

  43. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 9:44 am

    #38,

If the schools pull out of the NCAA entirely. All sports programs, then the NCAA can’t do anything to stop them though. It’s a semi-voluntary organization.

If for example HPU wanted to drop out of the NCAA and go into the USCAA, the NCAA can’t tell HPU “No, you can’t do that.”

  44. A-House September 8, 2011 9:44 am

  46. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 9:45 am

The conference changes are driven by football. There is talk that some conference affiliations such as a merger of the Mountain West and Conference USA might only be for football. Other team sports may be affiliated with other regional conferences. However its all up in the air right now. The Mountain West and Hawaii should be on guard.

Replay of Coach Tomey interview w/Borry Curran now on ESPN 1500

    Summarized by Sarvicdar at http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=40208

Coach Tomey had this to say about his special team’s play against CU.

Coach Tomey appeared on 1420’s Bobby Curran’s morning show (Thursday morning around 720).

He gave the run down on how his special teams performed against Colorado.

“We made a ton of mistakes,” Tomey said.”Two substitution errors, one time we had 10 men on the field, another time we got a man on the field at the last second, which the remarkable thing about that play was that we still got a 25 yard return.”

    Coach Tomey wasn’t pleased.

“We did somethings okay,” he said. “But we have to improve. I have to improve. I don’t beleive in defacto starters. You’ll see changes reflected in which players are taking the field this week (I’ve made changes).”

On Edward’s long kick off return.

“That play absolutely gave the team a boost…I’ve heard it’s the longest return Hawaii has had in awhile.”

On Harding’s first time playing in a football game.

    “Absolutely remarkable.”

    On Dunnachie punting.

“Perfect, that’s what I want,” Coach Tomey said. “Zero return yards, 42.6 punt average. A 65 yard punt is a terrible punt with 4 second hangtime, which only gives a good athlete 2 acres to run (his words).”

Also Coach Tomey identified that the punting team has to do a better job blocking for Dunnachie at the line of scrimmage.

Personally I’m thinking whoa!! I even turned up my car radio louder, eventhough it was loud enough to hear. Here’s Coach Tomey giving the run down of the CU game, describing how the kickoff team yielded 10 yards a return, the kick return team netting 35 yards a return, and vowing to making improvements.

I like Coach Tomey. He has my attention when he speaks. Hence turning the car radio up louder. (Defacto, when is the last time a UH coach used that word…whoa).

Other notes that Coach Tomey elaborated on.

“Tyler will handle the kickoffs, I was pleased at how well he did his job in the CU game.”

    On having both place kickers.

“They are both doing a great job, both made their field goals and PAT’s, one field goal (made), being a bank shot,” Coach Tomey adds. “Kyle made a 47 yard field goal in practice that would have been good from 55 yards out.”

Coach Tomey confirmed that the two won’t be alternating in the UW game, but hinted that their play will be determined by field position.

Man, that was great listening to Coach Tomey speak. Comprehensive. A lot of detail. I felt like I had an extra cup of coffee this morning.

  62. Haleakala September 8, 2011 10:08 am

    Kevin:

I always thought that this talk about having teams be able to pay their athletes above and beyond what they currently receive through their scholarships was a strategy for the big name schools to distance themselves even further from the mid-majors. The Ohio States and the Texas’s have the money to do that, while many other schools are already sruggling with their athletic budgets. The big names continue to show their greed.

  63. SteveM [iPhone4] September 8, 2011 10:14 am

I’m waiting for my blood test. Doing this right after a cruise may not be a good time… 😐

Maybe I should reschedule the doctor scolding until after I get back from the UH-UNLV game. My dentist got me yesterday already, but he’s a cruiser. 😆

He sounds Saban-esque. Or does Saban sound Tomey-esque. I think its the latter. 😛

Coaching staff has an even better balance now. Coach Mack is the super positive coach and Tomey is the “perfection is always one step ahead of you” type.

    I heart it.

  65. madeinhawaii September 8, 2011 10:17 am

    SteveM,

We’re staying in Bellevue, not Seattle.

  67. Kevin September 8, 2011 10:20 am

    Haleakala,

Oh yeah for sure. You’re instincts don’t eat the BS.

On the surface, I too would like to see ALL UH Manoa student-athletes get a little more than what they get now. Nothing extravagant, just like a little extra so they won’t have to bug mom and dad for a few more bucks for extra meals or whatever.

The BCS schools that can EASILY afford to do this and MORE and MORE … MORE, use the guise of “goodwill” and interest in the college-student as a way to push the issue.

Now, I would only be for this if ALL of UH Manoa’s 400+ student-athletes get to reap the rewards of the additional alloted funds. No one cannot convince me, not even God himself, that the guy or girl on the swim or soccer team that works JUST AS HARD in the classroom as on the field as a football or basketball player doesn’t deserve the extra benefit… I don’t care who’s revenue or non-revenue. This is still college-athletics, no matter how bastardized the BCS programs have made it.

Granted, each school will be forced to fund this endeavor on their own and schools like us will pay heavily, but it’s all or nothing. We cannot allow the rich to wallow in their filth while our student-athletes are still back at square one. We must find a way to do the same and the NCAA should make it MANDATORY across the board and set a guideline equal to all schools. If USC gets to give an extra 300.00/mo, then UH and all other “mid-majors” should have to give 300.00/mo… no more and no less.

Either that OR don’t do it at all.

In the meantime, the BCS programs hope and pray that eventually it will run mid-major athletic departments out of business.

  68. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 10:21 am

    #62,

I am not sure why they even want to distance themselves from the “rest”. They already make so much money as it is. What does NMSU or SJSU take away from them? What do they gain from kicking mid-major schools like a dog when its already down?

  69. Kevin September 8, 2011 10:26 am

    iwwthm,

They want to distance themselves from the rules that also govern smaller programs.

All these BCS level programs getting tabbed for potential violations rings a bell for these other country club members that “hey, we can’t play by our rules anymore???”

  70. Kevin September 8, 2011 10:26 am

    Greed leaves NOTHING to chance.

  77. Haleakala September 8, 2011 10:49 am

    Iwonder:

What do they get from kicking the mid-major even harder?

As an example, if Southern Cal is recruiting the same athlete that may be interested in Boise State of Hawaii, and if Southern Cal can pay the athlete $500 a month besides his scholarship, while Boise and Hawaii cannot, wouldn’t you think that the athlete would weigh the offers and be hard pressed to turn down the money? That’s how the upper echelon schools can gain a huge uppper hand by being able to pay their athletes. Too bad for the mid-majors which cannot afford to do the same.

  78. Pomai September 8, 2011 11:02 am

Hopefully the players have an early curfew

and don’t hang out at the Palor. Can get

    pretty wild over there.

  80. Haleakala September 8, 2011 11:12 am

    Pomai:

Yes, its dog eat dog. Its sad but true. What’s happening in sports today, must be a reflection of our society. What is tomorrow going to be like?

  81. Laura September 8, 2011 11:12 am

ST, make sure you keep Aaron Brown and Darius Bright away from the Palor. kkobi425 said it can be pretty wild over there. Cannot afford to loose them to suspension again.

  82. Kevin September 8, 2011 11:14 am

It’s human nature as a whole society to devour each other when push comes to shove.

    Rome fell…

Soon… time is ticking. Just because we have cell phones more powerful than some PCs doesn’t mean we are immune.

  83. longdistance808 September 8, 2011 11:19 am

    ST,

You can go to Bellevue Square mall and get something creative and nice for the wifey at Fireworks. I’ve never seen any store like it. Also, make sure you don’t pass up some Teavana tea either (not sure if there’s a Teavana in Hawaii).

  84. longdistance808 September 8, 2011 11:21 am

Yeah, not the Parlor. Lucky Strike instead.

  85. Kapahulu September 8, 2011 11:23 am

  88. Ben A Lurker September 8, 2011 12:16 pm

    re: watching the game locally

i checked with Oceanic Time Warner (OTW) via chat and the game only available for cable tv subscribers with the box ….

OTW The game is a PPV, when you order it (Web, CSR, IVR, or Ch.254/1254) you should see a “You Are Authorized” Slate on Ch.255/1255. You can only watch it if you have a cable box. it is not available to season ticket holders. Ordering directly from ch.255/1255 is only available on ODN Boxes

me: okay – got it – is there a page that explains all this?

OTW: Sales department can provide you that information, due to we do not have that website.

me: I notice at your main site there’s nothing at all on UH under products etc.

OTW: (referred me to sales again)

Channel 255 will open 7:30am Game time is at 9:30am Replay at 2:00pm. That saved me at least $800 smakaroos.

  92. Ben A Lurker September 8, 2011 12:37 pm

    re: 90.

I watched the espn replay Sunday, very good quality – gaps for commercials a but annoying. Good job by espn announcers that game, even handed and no overt bias. audio for sideline reports were missing during the replay

  93. Ben A Lurker September 8, 2011 12:38 pm

    but = bit

  94. kawika49 September 8, 2011 12:39 pm

    Thanks lurker.

Will be inviting other uh fans over.

  95. Manoa September 8, 2011 12:45 pm

On conference alignment, everyone is getting ahead of the game.

Key is Texas A&M leaving Big 12 for SEC, but SEC says that won’t happen until Big 12 and all Big 12 teams waive any rights against Texas A&M for leaving. The Big 12 (with the exception of Oklahoma) voted NOT to waive rights and these teams are prepared to go to court to keep Texas A&M from leaving.

It will be awhile before this all gets resolved and the musical chairs starts again.

  103. Dan-O September 8, 2011 1:08 pm

  104. Curt September 8, 2011 1:23 pm

This conference realignment is disturbing. I’d sure like to see the NCAA given the legal power to manage collegiate sports.

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 1:24 pm

    #77,

The way it stands now USC doesn’t need a $500 doughnut to lure in top prospects.

  106. 808Bowler September 8, 2011 1:24 pm

Wonder if brenden daily her a redshirt year left? Think next year we ing to have gud lbs again. Was jus thinking out loud.

  108. Old School Dave September 8, 2011 1:39 pm

Stephen, if you have a chance, try to eat at the Crab Pot in Bellevue. It’s an adventure, with hammer and bucket. I moved back to Hawaii before it was built, but there’s supposed to be a pretty cool bowling alley across the street (take the pedestrian overpass) from Bellevue Square.

  109. UHfan808 September 8, 2011 1:49 pm

  120. Kevin September 8, 2011 2:42 pm

    Made,

Eh… just a play on words… Semi-pro because it ain’t exactly BUKU $$$ like the NFLers I guess.

And I never saw the movie “Semi-Pro” with Will Ferrell either. Dude hasn’t been funny since Anchorman and Old School.

  129. Kekoa September 8, 2011 3:28 pm

UHfan808 ~ Some of us are going to Club Genji’s for the game. Comfy couch, good viewing on HDTV. Free kope/tea, and their Shrimp Tempura.

Ige’s too loud. Too crowded. Service is slow, food & beverage over-priced. Parking in the back 40.

  130. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 8, 2011 3:36 pm

    Kekoa,

Never had a problem with the volume at Ige’s. Nor the service/food prices.

As Kevin said…The shoyu pork “Rafute” is tasty.

    teri flap meat.

  132. Kevin September 8, 2011 3:39 pm

    Miah too! GO Warriors!

  135. kawika49 September 8, 2011 4:09 pm

#133 It’s because too many people taking Hawaii. They want to go naked on UW.

  136. mikey September 8, 2011 4:12 pm

Vegas odds makers are hoping the bets go with Washington…..they got to make up for past weekend house losses.

    Better for US

Even Washington fans jumped on Hawaii and come down to -6 and holding.

Hope it goes up by game time.

  137. building self-esteem September 8, 2011 4:14 pm

Greetings from California! I’m bored to tears at work so I decided to browse your site on my iphone during lunch break. I really like the information you provide here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m surprised at how quick your blog loaded on my mobile .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyways, fantastic site!

  138. madeinhawaii September 8, 2011 4:15 pm

Ige’s food always seems a bit too oily for me. Tastes okay, though

  139. mikey September 8, 2011 4:20 pm

I do have concern about our passing game. Receivers missing summer showed Moniz was off target and even if Moniz gets back his accuracy, passing yardage won’t be the same as last year against good teams. due to weak WR and he can’t run 100 yard every game.

Usually the line move is correct when it moves that much… let’s hope not in this case!

  140. Alethea Warrick September 8, 2011 4:29 pm

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and appearance.
