Bee effort

Norm Chow and a couple of assistant coaches are in the Beehive state — Utah — meeting with recruits today.

They are making home visits with their four UH commitments — Ammon Barker, Marcus Kemp, Drake Miller and Elijah Tupai.

UH also is believed to be recruiting two other Utah players.

The Utah prospects are scheduled to visit Hawaii this weekend.

Tomorrow, the UH group heads to Florida.

    13. I wouldn’t say its a let down yet. Majority of visitors were commits already and I think we knew it was going to come down to after final weekend for Titus and Aofaga. With Mike Edwards leaving, hope we get that good JC corner though. could help immediately.

Its exciting to have so many good players in the mix at this point. The commits we have already exceed all of the other recent recruiting classes and if we can snag a couple more guys who are on the fence this could be a pretty epic class on paper.

  33. jm2375 January 28, 2013 8:58 am

Dang. Couldn’t they have just rescheduled it?

UH, BYU expected to drop matchup from football schedule

The University of Hawaii and Brigham Young are expected cancel their scheduled their Dec. 7, 2013 football game at Aloha Stadium, a move that could imperil the ’14 game as well.

UH officials have declined comment and and a BYU spokesman has said work on the Cougars’ schedule was still in progress.

I hear a lot about Taylor Graham, but I am completely convinced Keelan Ewaliko can be our starting QB next year if the coaches gave him a shot and implemented a Spread/Pistol package. NFL coaches did it for Kaep, RG3, and Russell Wilson. Ewaliko flat out flies though. Also has gotten a lot stronger from when he committed back in summer.

First part of video he makes All State DE Dakota Turner look super slow. Which is saying a lot because I think Turner is good. 2.55 min mark of video he makes a Russell Wilson like play with his feet but keeps his eyes down field. After 3 minute mark, he shows that he has pretty good footwork for a high school QB. Not a lot of arm strength but were not in the NFL or SEC. Regardless what position, Ewaliko has future star written and is one of those 0 stars type guys that I am happy isn’t discovered by other schools.

Been watching some video and im convinced Kapoleis Darius Kila deserves a prefered walk-on. at 6’6″ 340lbs 225lbs-13x, 21.5″ vert and 5.69 fourty. hes stronger and maybe alil more athletic than Wa’a while weighing 60+ lbs more.

is he a qualifier – grade wise?

    #41

haha… garens! I would tell him in order to make the team he needs to drop 20lbs by fall camp and 40 lbs by next spring ball. he could b a monster if he was 300lbs leaner!

  45. Jeezy33 January 28, 2013 10:04 am

    39. He looks nowhere near athletic as Waa.. Very first play of the video he falls down while making 1st contact then holds defender to ground…. Majority of his nice blocks against 190 pound castle d linemen

  46. jonj January 28, 2013 10:09 am

i watched both videos n i see Wa’a do the same type of plays. on Wa’as it also shows him miss blocks and go for the next guy. im not saying Wa’a isnt better becuz i think he is. Im just saying on paper this guy whos 60lbs heavier shows the same measurables.

running quarterback…..not unless he is disciplined.

Manti showed it’s ok to go to and stay in school and do a mission sometime later. and he’s pretty strong in the faith. any chance other LDS guys could do the same?

  51. Moocher January 28, 2013 10:28 am

maybe they can do their mission on Niihau?

not meant to offend, meant to be taken light heartedly to keep the LDS guys close close close.

  52. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 10:47 am

John Wa’a is clearly a lot quicker and more athletic than Kila. I just finished watching both video’s and he gets to the 2nd level a lot faster. The difference also is Waa can play guard in D1. Kila is 6-5 and isn’t playing tackle in high school. He isn’t able to pull or get to the 2nd level. On the play’s John Wa’a so call misses a block, it’s because of the design of the play being a draw or a screen. I guess I personally don’t put too much stock into bench press and weight.

In general I think its smarter to recruit athletic linemen who can add strength than bigger linemen who need to shed weight. Guys like Ben Clarke, Blake Muir, etc. Guys like Shigematsu have a hard time playing at an athletic weight to block good D linemen.

Just my preference and observation. Could be completely wrong though.

  53. jonj January 28, 2013 10:53 am

N thats exactly why I didnt say offer him a scholly and give him a prefered walkon! hes a project type player. but u cant coach size and I do think hes a sloppy 340 right now. which would be one reason he cant get to the 2nd level! imagine him 40lbs lighter. which i believe is doable! tell him lose 20lbs by fall n the rest should fall off during the season while he is in a regimented workout n diet plan. He has the strength, he obviously has some very good athletism and hes a full qualifier! doesnt hurt to bring in more linemen for free

what is most exciting about this year’s recruiting is that in these last two weeks we are looking at recruits with high value and who are of great quality as compared to year’s past when we were still scrambling to get guys in.

now we need to be innovative to find room for this great influx of talent.

and coaches on the road to secure the prior verbals and to seek even more up grades includiung our head coach. the past two head coaches rarely or almost never made home visits at all.

#6… Chow is doing what every good recruiter does… stay in good communication with commits to reinforce the school’s commitment to the player. It also reduces the chances of a player de-committing.

Regarding the on-field coaching, Chow is a great offensive mind. Chow had very little talent to work with in 2012 so he’s limited on what he can call. Things will be much better from this point forward. The offense will be completely different looking with the talent on the field. The only tricky part will be how fast all the new faces assimilate and come together.

Like the basketball team this year, UH has much better talent coming in, but with so many new players presumably going to get major playing time, it will probably be inconsistent the first half of the season. Graham is going to have at least 5 new WRs to work with (6 commits at this point).

  85. PIAA DS January 28, 2013 12:43 pm

#39 and others…Darius Kila has a huge upside. The downside is he’s only played 2 years of high school football (was in the band) and needs work. Coaches say he’s very coachable and a hard worker. He is an academic qualifier. He would benefit greatly from a greyshirt to redshirt or a redshirt, and a good weight program. Problem is, most colleges are not interested in project players and Darius is a project and he understands that very well. Great kid. Works weekly with Derby trying to improve and he is, but he’s realistic about his shot at the next level. We found him something at D2 but we’re still in a wait and see pattern.

  88. A-House January 28, 2013 12:47 pm

    PIAA DS:

mahalo for the update on Darius Kila – he could become a great “walkon” for UH with his character, work habit, and willingness to learn – also, knowinghis weakness/limitations now, but can be a big contributor in his junior and senior years.

  89. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 28, 2013 12:52 pm

I guess they can’t just keep the game as is with the condition that BYU can actively look for someone else to fill the slot and/or Hawaii through divine powers gets to the championship game.

  90. PIAA DS January 28, 2013 12:52 pm

Would he not want to try walk-on?? Projects arent so bad (in my eyes) if there free. Like u said huge upside

  92. Independent Thinker January 28, 2013 1:00 pm

I don’t buy into the “Chow is a great offensive mind” statements made here often. I also do not buy into the “he had very little talent to work with” argument.

Seems to me that if you are a “great offensive mind”, then you should be able to make lemonade out of lemons. If you can’t do this, then you are not a “great offensive mind”, as some people like to call chow.

Chow had what he had, just like in chess, and the pieces are fixed in terms of powers and weaknesses. It is your challenge to make the pieces do what you intend for them to do.

A rook is limited in the same way a bishop is limited, but in the hands of a master, these limits become strengths, not weaknesses.

Sounds to me like some people here are arguing that chow is a chess master, but the chess pieces he is playing with on his board, for example, the bishop, somehow have less power than the bishop wielded by his opponent. Doesn’t make much sense to me, this argument, but that is the argument being advanced by chow’s cheerleaders.

I have yet to see the brilliance claimed by some that chow possesses, and I would be pleased if he was in fact brilliant, but that is a wait and see proposition, not something to be taken on faith.

We had lots of talent in 2012. The problem, is seems to me, was the poor day-to-day and game-time decision making by the coaching staff, which falls squarely on the shoulders of chow.

  104. papajoe2 January 28, 2013 1:47 pm

Sad that we are forced to cancel the BYU game especially since the Warriors will probably not make the championship game next year. Our season will probably be over by then. Too bad. The only way to make that extra game, Hawaii exemption, is if Hawaii can start the season 1 week earlier than the rest of the schools.

  105. Former UH Athlete January 28, 2013 1:52 pm

#35 jeezy, I just watched Keelan’s video, and I don’t think’s he’s going to get much playing time. He’s got good speed, and is a shifty runner, but he is a below average thrower. There is not much zip on the ball, even when he drives off his back foot. Not overly accurate. In a highlight video that doesn’t show bad throws, he doesn’t hit many receivers in stride. Most of the long completions are the WR having adjusting to the ball, or is wide open, or the defender misplays the WR and/or ball. There weren’t any throws that made me say, “WOW!” I get a little skeptical when QB’s highlight video is him running the ball the over 60% of the time.

In 2010, he completed 66% of his passes, which is very good, but Keelan regressed badly in his last two years. He only completed 45% in 2011 and 44% in 2012.

Plus, at 5’11” 175lb, durability is going to be a huge issue with his style of play. Keelan does not progress to his #2 receiver. If his #1 option is covered, he takes off running, which is ok, but more scrambles = more hits. D1 defenders are much bigger and faster than Local Hawaii players. D1 defenses are bigger, faster, stronger than vs Mililani or Lahaina. So the body takes a much bigger toll when hit too much.

I really hope Keelan proves me wrong, but in my opinion, may need to change positions to see any significant minutes. At the QB position, Graham and Woosley are presumably the top 2, plus Schroeder & Higgins are still around with more experience than Keelan. At best I see Keelan as the #4.

Keelan has more than enough speed and athleticism to play at slot or as a returner.

As much as I love watching Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, Johnny Football, and Mariota, they have the rare combination of strong arms, thick body-types and good-to-great speed. All of them can make all the throws and have the size to withstand some hits. This the future QB but they are very hard to find.

RG3 is much thinner than Kaep or Wilson, and has been injury prone.

I guess they can’t just keep the game as is with the condition that BYU can actively look for someone else to fill the slot and/or Hawaii through divine powers gets to the championship game.

Good point, but very difficult since no one wants to consider/imply that Hawaii won’t make it to the MWC championship game. Also note that 11 other MWC tems have to leave that date open–and only two will play. Such a waste, but it hurts Hawaii the most since that’s a popular 13th game slot.

I commented last week that if BYU were agreeable to a last-minute cancellation (with reasonable cancellation penalty) that UH should hedge their bets and keep the game scheduled. We go the MWC championship, hooray…we pay BYU penalty. We don’t quite make it, we keep a bigger $$$ home game.

It would take great courage on the A.D.’s part to leave the door open… hmmm 😕

    Great recruiting news!

Wishing well to Coach Chow & Staff on their trip! Hope they secure everyone possible!

Turf – every single player on the team had a lot of talent. To make it onto the roster for any D1 team, that act by itself, says you have a lot of talent.

  109. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 28, 2013 2:08 pm

    #107,

I agree SteveM. Seems to be that the chances of BYU finding another team is slim and our chances for a championship are..well not as great. That being said, just keep the game on schedule and if it happens, it happens.

I mean geezus if they were willing to add the Temple game with that short notice, I don’t see the problem.

  110. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 2:17 pm

    106. I agree with his arm but I’ve seen a lot of average arms with good feet do well.

Darron Thomas for one is an example. I think Ewaliko is actually a better runner possibly. Masoli didn’t have a good arm and wasn’t as close to that athlete Ewaliko is. Moniz average arm strength. Ryan Aplin has a very average arm.

I am convinced in this era that you need good feet and being able to run a 4.4 40 does wonders and trumps the fact you need a big arm. The pro style drop back QBs need superior O line and play makers around. As good as Derek Carr is, you saw that SMU D did to him. And our O line right now is nowhere near to as close as good as the Fresno one and dont have those type of weapons. Carr pretty good athlete too. If Graham can’t buy any time at all, I am very scared he wont have much success in his 2 year spand.

I doubt Hawaii will use Ewaliko at QB because they would need to alter their offense into more of a spread/ run attack. But if they do, I think it could be explosive with speed like St Juste, Ewaliko, Barker, Polk, Etc.

  111. st. anthony trojan January 28, 2013 2:19 pm

ha ha turfwar….seems like you cannot count… the numbers on ur hands and toes would not be enough to see how much talent that the pro scouts are just “itching” to draft…not counting the numerous ‘invitees”…..my gosh..as the saying goes… “even Mr. Johnny Almeida can see that” god rest his soul.. now there was “Talent”

  112. papajoe2 January 28, 2013 2:19 pm

Too many BYU fans have to make plans to come to Hawaii with flights, hotels, etc. Should Hawaii make it to the championship game, the last minute cancelation will certainly dissapoint them and, in today’s society, maybe even sue.

in fact, i would say a good amount of fans have already purchased their hotel/flights etc. it might actually be better under the circumstances you mentioned for UH-BYU to just keep the game scheduled. If I was in their position, I would rather have a chance of keeping the game scheduled than being told it wont happen at all.

  115. BigWave96744 January 28, 2013 2:28 pm

JMHO, Ewaliko and Ursua will not be QB’s at Manoa

  116. Whats up January 28, 2013 2:31 pm

So, let me get this straight? Your logic states that Chow has chess pieces but he couldn’t play chess for nothing? But my question is when you play chess all the pieces are equal, a black knight is equal in strength and moves to the white knight and so on, correct? But in football is Hawaii offensive Lineman the same as offensive Alabama lineman? Is Notre Dame offense/Defensive lineman is same/equal to Alabama offense/defense lineman? Of course not? Thats why your analogy is flawed because Chow is playing chess with players that are meant for checkers (RnS). The players that are Mack recruits are great young men but are not D1 Alabama talent or even Boise State talent. I don’t hate the young men that don’t make the grade with Chow and his staff evaluation, because they were recruited for the RnS and Hawaii went 6-7 last year against not so great teams. This year if Mack and his recruits were still playing, I think Hawaii would have gone 4-8 overall with playing in the MWC.

  117. SteveM January 28, 2013 2:36 pm

The idea of a MWC Championship game is a great idea. It’s for an automatic BCS bowl, isn’t it? Isn’t it?

But the fact remains, the end of the current season–this year and the future, will leave Hawaii short the last week for scheduling purposes. UH will have to really scramble to give fans 7 home games…or is that off the table too?

  118. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 2:37 pm

One of the reason’s I am not overly excited about Taylor Graham yet is because of what Norm did at UCLA with highly rated pro style QBs.

    2008 – KEvin Craft- 5 star recruit – 55% completion 2,341 yards 7 TD 20 INT

    2009- Kevin Prince- 3 star recruit -2,050 yards 56% completion 2,050 yards 8 TD 8 INT

    2010- Richard Brehaut- 4 star recruit – 56% completion 1,296 yards 6 TD, 7 INT

    2011- Jon Hays – 56% completion 1,459 yards 12 TD 8 INT

Jordan Wynn- 56% completion, 727 yards 6 TD 2 INT

    2012-Sean Schroeder- 50.9% completion, 1,878 yards 11 TD 12 INT

These are just the facts I am presenting. Whether Chow is capable of leading a potent offense is yet to be known. But the game is evolving and the drop back style QB isn’t working anymore in Norm’s offense. He needs to be willing to make the proper adjustments even if it takes getting out of his comfort zone.

Never in Jones era or Mack era did we have QB complete such a low percentage of passes with a low completion rate and bad TD- INT ratio. I would say QB need to complete at least 60% in college level.

  121. Former UH Athlete January 28, 2013 2:43 pm

    #104… I second your comment.

NFL scouts can locate talent anywhere, so being in Hawaii shouldn’t hurt draft status. With pro days, several all-star games, and the combine… Talent will get recognized.

Last year the only UH draftee was Aaron Brown (7th round). And only Vaughn Meatoga was invited to last years combine. So talent was already low from 2011’s roster.

In April, Edwards is a shoe-in to get drafted, so that will make a grand total of 2 draft picks and very few un-drafted free agent signings out of UH in the past two years.

That’s doesn’t qualify as “lots of talent.”

Examples- Ryan Aplin, Chandler Harnish, Terrance Owens, Cody Fajardo. Dingwell – SDSU.

I think Zwahlen can be that guy but we won’t even see him for next 2 seasons.

  128. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 2:59 pm

Another thing to think about, I don’t think its a coincidence that Arizona and UCLA hire new coaches that chose to run the spread and immediately had the top offenses in the country. No disrespect to Nick Foles but Matt Scott lit up the scoreboard for Arizona and Kadeem Carey put up ridiculous numbers under Rich Rod. Jim Mora is a pro style coach and even he knew what to do with Brett Hundley.

  129. Former UH Athlete January 28, 2013 3:10 pm

Taylor Graham hasn’t proven anything yet, but looking at his physical ability and his film from Ohio St scrimmages, he’s got a big time arm and a smooth release. He can make all the throws. Now that Chow as a few WRs coming in that can stretch the field, which was completely absent in 2012, that adds a dimension that UH didn’t have available last year.

Jeezy… the low completion % was more due to poor pass blocking and poor WR play. Schreoder was hit on almost every pass play. Any QB, other than elite NFL QBs are going to get rattled (and beat up) if under constant pressure. Example: Colt Brennan vs Georgia. Colt was a record setting QB, but the O-line couldn’t block anybody and he had his worst game of his career. Hurried throws lead to inaccurate throws.

The average joe looks at the stats and blames the QB for bad numbers. In reality, it’s a combination of several things. With the 2012 UH O-line and WRs corp, there’s not a college QB in country that would have completed 60%.

Also, Schreoder threw away a ton of balls because the WRs couldn’t get open. The WRs dropped a TON of passes, too. I think there were 6 dropped TD passes and a bunch more drive-killing 3rd down drops. Those are huge momentum killing plays and not the QB’s fault.

BOTTOM LINE: The Line has to protect and the WRs need to get open. When one or both don’t perform well, completion % will suffer. If the defense gets to the QB quickly, there’s no time for WRs to run their routes, therefore there’s nobody to throw to.

  130. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 3:18 pm

    130. My point is college offenses are evolving to spread with athletic QBs to trump medicore pass protection. If you think UCLA and UTAH had bad pass protection, don’t expect it to be better in Hawaii. The past 5 QBs (pro style) couldn’t complete over 60% in Norm’s offense. It’s hard for me to be confident that Taylor Graham is going to be that much better than the 4 star recruits Norm had at UCLA.

Look at the success that Brett Huntley, Matt Scott, Kevin Hogan had in their 1st year as starters. Don’t tell me protection is the reason all those QBs had huge success. Josh Nunes had the same O line at Stanford as Hogan did.

If we don’t protect Graham, he is going to get killed again. Losing Muir is going to hurt the O line as well. If we had Maulers on our O line which allowed us to rush for 200 yards a game, then yeah any type QB would work. But no ones fooling me that our O line is going to be dominant.

  131. dannyp January 28, 2013 3:19 pm

    #111

Ewaliko’s legs also force defense’s to run zone, so if he’s cerebral and accurate with the ball his lack of arm strength can be masked with route combos that manipulate zone coverages. Not to mention his threat to run opens up the running game for the Rb’s. Since he occupies a defender on the backside of the play Ewaliko is essentially an extra blocker. A Dual-Threat QB is a must in modern football.

  132. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 3:20 pm

    130. Unfortunately we don’t play in the SEC and Colt Brennan completed 70% of his passes that year so I think your example is pretty off.

  133. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 3:23 pm

    132. Exactly… I am not saying Ewaliko is the answer. I would like to see him get a shot though considering I have 0 faith in our QBs not named Graham. Arm strength is over rated to me at college level. We’ve seen a lot of medicore arms succeed. I am more sold that a 4.4 40 QB can create plays with his feet that allows WRs to get wide open when plays break down.

Excellent post. I was checking continuously this blog and I am impressed! Extremely useful information specifically the last part 🙂 I care for such info much. I was looking for this particular info for a long time. Thank you and good luck.

  135. Former UH Athlete January 28, 2013 3:31 pm

Jeezy… Keep in mind the price tags that come with the coaches you just mentioned. UH didn’t have the money to bring in that caliber of coaching and they didn’t want spend over $1Million and risk making another bad hire. Chow at his pay grade is a steal and fans should be very happy with how recruiting is going and the future these players can bring.

Also, Pac-12 schools have access to top athletes, which makes it easier to recruit the players necessary to transition to a new offensive scheme. UH, and most MWC teams can’t get the athletes the Pac-12 can choose from and it takes longer to turn things around.

Mike Sanford was the hot offensive coordinator that designed the spread offense under Urban Meyer when they were at Utah. UNLV hired Sanford and tried to run the offense that you’re referring to and it failed miserably. Sanford did appear close to bringing UNLV to a winning record after 5 seasons, but the BOR and boosters decided they had seen enough and fired him.

Based off how this recruiting class is going, Chow has better access to a wider range of recruits than either Mack or Jones. The program is moving in the right direction. Wins will come.

  138. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 3:41 pm

Pretty sure it was Urban Meyer’s offense.

And regardless of pay, Norm coached at a high enough level that he should be able to adapt his offenses. Like i said, I showed you his numbers in his past 5 seasons. No change at all in numbers and consistently producing QBs with 55% completion rate.

Even if UNLV is your 1 example, Hawaii has never been a bottom of the barrel program like UNLV.

I can name you more offenses that evolved in 1 year that took off than failed because of going to a new offense.

June Jones for one changed our numbers in 1 year. Fresno St in 1 year became one of the most potent offenses with new Air Raid attack. Broyles goes to Baylor and instantly become a potent offense even when RG3 left.

Maybe Norm will adapt this year. I am just stating my opinion that he needs to evolve from his 90s west coast style. Based on his past 5 seasons as a coach, his offenses have been boring. And the numbers dont lie…

When Rolo QBs are all completing over 60% of passes and he is a young coach, it at least raises a question in my head.

  139. al January 28, 2013 3:47 pm

Chow a steal? The dude couldn’t even conform to his personnel for one year. He should have known we didn’t have the player to run a smash mouth 21 personnel offense and yet he ran it. Either he’s that arrogant or he’s that foolish.

  141. jiminy cricket January 28, 2013 3:48 pm

Jeezy 33 comments are well reasoned. Chow is locked into an old time system and doesn’t know how to adjust to the spread and run and shoot. Talk to any D coordinator and they will tell you it is much harder to defend the spread and R&S than a pro style offense.

The old Byu offenses was what I thought Chow was going to bring. Instead, what he has installed will not work; grinding and pounding offense where our guy has to be physically superior to the other team’s guy. Our offense is not a big scoring offense and only works if you have a defense that is suffocating and will not let teams score. Is that a good philosophy to have? Doubt it. Under JJ’s offense we beat Alabama (!), oregon state, michigan State, northwestern, boise state, fresno state, nevada, byu (beat them so bad they refused to schedule use while JJ was coach), (sonebody help me with the other wins over name brand schools). The R&S allows you to compete against physically superior teams.

JJ didn’t have talent when he took over an 0-18 team but the R&S brought them back immediately in his first year. In one year he developed QB Dan Robinson. Chow in his first year lost to Fresno State (45-0 at halftime!). Schroeder never improved during the course of the season. Chow’s offensive record over the last 8 years has been spotty.

    JJ will return.

  142. Whats up January 28, 2013 3:54 pm

To be fair to Norm Chow at UCLA his was forced to run the pistol by Neusel and we all know Neusel was fired and now UCLA has a new head coach. At Utah Jordan Wynn just was injury prone to no fault of his own, it happens some people are injury prone while others are not. Just think about it? Some people get cancer and others don’t? It just is? So Chow has to adjust his system to the No Star rating JC QB recruit Jon Hayes that was shorter and was moblie. And Utah won in there bowl game against Georgia Tech. The difference was though Utah had some legit BCS talent on the Offensive/Defensive lines. Not elite Alabama/Georgia talent but better than what Hawaii has on the roster in 2011 and 2012. But Chow adjusted his offense to fit a moblie QB and spread out the offense after Wynn was out for the season.

Chow has made adjustments in the past for spreading it out and having a moblie QB. However, the O line play has to improve or it doesn’t matter who you put at QB. You could put Russell Wilson back there and he would still get pummeled from runnning around for his life. Believe me Russel Wilson has played for NC State which had a O line that was way better than Hawaii’s, then he transfered to Wisconsin which we all know had a better line than most teams in college football and now he plays behind a Seattle Pro O line. But studs like Dejon Allen, David Griffin along with some others are coming to hopefully fix the Oline Issues!

Plus, the Warrior WR corps was awful in 2012, Billy Ray and Scott Harding were the only WR that played in most games and actually caught some passes and wasn’t injury prone missing game after game and dropped passes that were right in there hands like the rest of WR’s. Hopefully Billy Ray, Scott Harding and the incoming WR recruits can fix the WR woes. Mike Edward is the MAN, hands down! Losing him hurts Hawaii big time but the defense is the one thing that I’m confident about, think of Marrel Jackson, Jerrol Garcia Williams and Nequan Phillps! Those true freshman stars that are now sophmore studs!! And with the incoming defensive recruits and transfers like Iuta Tepa, Kennedy Tulimasealii and company. I’m excited, hopeful and being patient for a few years, that the Warriors will back to conference champions one day. Go Warriors!

I think JJ was great for Hawaii when he was here, but he’s gone elsewhere and as I said previously, I don’t think he’ll be back as a coach.

We have a new AD, a new President and chancellor (whether we like them or not) and they are the decision makers. I don’t know if he would be their choice. Too many variables to state “JJ will return”.

  145. haka January 28, 2013 4:06 pm

Just think what a coaching carousel we would have if every hired coach was measured against, what was at that time, the greatest turn around in NCAA football history. You got one year to prove it coach. I think that is measuring against an extreme and is obviously not even close to what happens in most of the cases. It is the exception, and in this case, not the Norm.

  146. NotNasti January 28, 2013 4:28 pm

JJ inherited a fairly talented team. Even Von Rotten would have won some games with the personnel of the 1999 team. Adrian Klemm, Kaulana Noa and Vince Manuwai on the offensive line all were drafted and played in the NFL. We also had Avion Weaver, James Fendersonl, Ashley Lelie and Dwight Carter and Craig Stutzman on offense. Jeff Ulbrich, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Chris Brown, Nate Jackson, Lui Fuga, Tony Tuioti, Doug Sims, Joe Correia and Lance Samuseva were defensive studs. The 2012 roster just doesn’t measure up to the 1999 roster. We tend to forget that it was on the backs of those players that elevated JJ to mythical status. JJ’s only coming back to retire and play golf. He’s never coming back to coach. That ship has sailed.

I don’t think basing Chow’s quality as a coach by pointing out that he didn’t adapt his offensive philosophy to his players this past year is accurate. He came in to completely change the system. He accepted that the team would struggle and that a number of players would not fit in. He didn’t purposely lose any games but I’m sure he knew that he could have won a game or two more by doing a hybrid of his system. You can love or hate the system but I think Chow has created a situation that will most rapidly actualize it.

#145… I agree JJ isn’t coming back. SMU is pretty happy with him considering he rebuilt them back to a respectable program again with 4 straight bowl games. Also, expectations are n’t super high so unless JJ has multiple losing seasons in a row, he’s gonna stay there and milk his $2+million.

For JJ to consider UH again, it would have to dangle $1.5million/year plus a house in Kahala. UH doesn’t have the funds for that. If they did, that would mean the football program is flying high (and ticket sales) and there would be no demand to change coaches.

Kids have to get invited by UH just to walk-on. Can’t just show up.

  162. dannyp January 28, 2013 5:53 pm

Not to mention Graves as leading us to victory against BYU, until Iosefa fumbled which resulted in a scoop and score.

    SteveM:

Good point, but very difficult since no one wants to consider/imply that Hawaii won’t make it to the MWC championship game. Also note that 11 other MWC tems have to leave that date open–and only two will play. Such a waste, but it hurts Hawaii the most since that’s a popular 13th game slot.

Hey, I just realized that everyone could play…did I miss some announcement? … On the championship game day, the 3rd and 4th place teams could play, the 5th meets 6th, etc.. Kinda meaningless games though.

Does the winner of the MWC championship get an automatic bid to a BCS game?

  164. jonj January 28, 2013 5:59 pm

But u guys are right it wasnt the exact same line Leonard, faamu, sapolu, lefiti were gone. only WR gone was Pollard. still pollard only accounted for 1000 of the 4000 passed. sapolu was the back-up to lefiti who got injured early and took over and did a good job and kept the starting position. I believe leonard was the starting LG beginning until either shigematsu or Loeffler went down.

  165. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 6:01 pm

Jonj, I was def one of the fans who wanted to see a read option with Graves. How he fell out of favor with Chow is really beyond anything I know. It was clear a lot of players showed there displeasure in the decision to not play Graves at all though. No matter how many sacks we took, nothing new was going to be tried.

The worst part about it is we will never know if DG could have evolved. He didn’t have the best accuracy and did lock onto 1st reads a lot but those were his first games as a junior in which I noticed it and he could have improved over time. His athletic ability was def the key to his game though. If he had more time he could be been solid.

No one will ever convince me SS was a better option than DG though.

  166. Inyoface January 28, 2013 6:03 pm

The completion rate will be a lot higher next year with, what seems to be, a strong receiving corp. We had too many dropped or incomplete passes that hurt the momentum last year. Can’t wait to see some nice slant routes executed again.

  167. Derek January 28, 2013 6:12 pm

And don’t forget, Justin Alo! He is a very good QB (in Chow’s words). He redshirted so he got acclimated to the school and the academics. That’s a good thing, plus he got a year under his belt to mature, get stronger, and hopefully a lot smarter. He (in film anyway), can throw the ball well and he can run well too. He’s not a 4.4 guy, but I think he’s in the 4.6 range which is decent enough. Running a spread offense and the read option you need deft ball handling and good decision making. That’s the key.

Colin Kaepernick has been running the pistol offense for at least 4 years (he redshirted as a freshman) before the SF 49ers ever put in the pistol to their offense. They are running it so well because Kaepernick is an expert at running that offense. Jim Harbaugh knows that offense can move the ball on the ground and score a lot of points. Nevada proved it can move the ball on anyone. I predict the 49ers will beat the Ravens easily. Ravens won’t know what hit them in my mind. Kaepernick will run circles around them and kill them with big pass plays to Vernon Davis and Randy Moss on long TDs, and Ray Lewis won’t know where the ball is. Gore and LaMichael James will have a field day. Bank it, 49ers 45, Baltimore, 21.

Sorry, got carried away. Back to the best QB for UH, I think it will be either Alo or Woosley. I haven’t seen Ikaika’s film so I can’t say much about him, but I’m assuming Woosley is a lot more mobile than Graham. Chow has a big decision to decide what he is going to implement.

  168. Former UH Athlete January 28, 2013 6:13 pm

    #146… BINGO!!!

What JJ did in his 1st year was an anomaly and that big of turnaround may never be repeated again. So it’s unrealistic to expect any coach to turn any middling program around in one year. ( three non-winning seasons in four years is a middling program).

JJ did go 3-9 in his second year, so basically did it backwards. People get caught up in the 1999 turnaround and forget that JJ really struggled his 2nd year.

  169. Konoman1 January 28, 2013 6:18 pm

Hey 137 are you related to Manoa Mist 1?

  170. jonj January 28, 2013 6:20 pm

Jeezy u and me both! the best was watching SS take 2 read option plays VS USC, both he kept! lol Id like to think DG would have had a breakout junior season just the way Moniz and Brennan did. (brennans would be a stretch)

And NO one Will ever tell me SS was better than DG!! not UHathlete nor Tsai!

  171. dannyp January 28, 2013 6:26 pm

At the very least we could of used D.Graves the same way Boise uses Grant Hendrix and make a pistol package for him. It changes the pace of the game and gives the opponent another threat to gameplan for.

  172. Mauiwarrior January 28, 2013 6:27 pm

Dg couldn’t make the reads ss couldn’t make the throws, online couldn’t block, wr’s couldn’t catch

SS couldn’t make his reads either. He was always looking for the deep throw even if we had RB’s leaking out or if we had WR’s dragging over the middle. Often times they were WIDE open.

  175. hossana January 28, 2013 6:39 pm

All of you idiots talking about JJ turning around UH program in his 1st yr. using the R&S…yeah, so when he went to SMU and even now..he is ave. around 4-6 losses per year and I didn’t see him turning the program around in his 1st yr…and if you read the Dallas papers, JJ was being criticized last yr. when they were favored to win the Conference USA title but didn’t do it……the two teams in the BCS championship were not R&S teams and giving Chow the time to bring in his own players and talent, then and then only let’s see what he can do…all of your criticisms during the middle of the season when UH was getting embarrassed saying no recruit would want to come here…well, what the hell is happening now with all these recruits coming in from Florida and everywhere else and he is bringing in wide receivers with height and speed….like I said, give him time….he damm well knows what the heck he is doing….but all you idiots that constantly are negative probably are just armchair qb’s that don’t support the program and all you do is sit on your arses and moan, groan and complain……he has a 5 yr. contract and it takes time to build a program….UH IS NOT A TEXAS A&M, or HOUSTON or whatever…UH IS UH….Chow never had the damm talent this past year and talent on both offensive and defensive lines were lacking because the last coaching staff never forsesaw that weakness and even in Dec.’11 at the end of McMackin’s tenure, local sportswriters were saying that talent would definitely be lacking for the coming season (2012 season) AND IT DEFINITELY SHOWED…plez don’t tell me that Miano would have been better also because that would still be a loser and disaster….yes, I want to see progress and it takes time….it took time with JJ and Tomey and lets see where Chow is heading once his players are in place…….

  176. jeezy33 January 28, 2013 6:39 pm

  182. Manoa#1 January 28, 2013 7:12 pm

No konoman #137 is not related to me but chow still Sucks. warriors should keep the Byu game on the schedule cause they ain’t Gonna Smell the MWC championship game.

  183. dannyp January 28, 2013 7:13 pm

    182

No joke I just read on twitter that he scored a 17 on the SAT cause he couldn’t speak english. Thats quite the hill he has to climb.

  184. WarriorNY January 28, 2013 7:15 pm

I just need to say this real quick….

JJ is the past… Norm Chow is our current….I feel like I’ve said this ten times before but…

UH has been incredibly lucky to have two coaches of their stature… But we need to stop living in the past, Comparisons between JJ and NC dont help the program move forward. JJ Is not coming back… Let’s give NC the opportunity he deserves to get us moving forward again… I really believe that when Cooach Chow gets a team that he wants, he will be incredibly successful…

    Ok that’s all…

  185. Derek January 28, 2013 7:16 pm

Other notable QB who ran spread offenses and/or are very good runners & decent passers:

Jordan Lynch – N. Illinois (eligibiliy completed)

    Taylor Martinez – Nebraska, Jr.

Conner Shaw – South Carolina, Jr.

    Terrance Broadway – Lousiana-Lafayette, Soph.

Chuckie Keeton – Utah State, Soph.

    Tajh Boyd – Clemson, Jr.

Braxton Miller – Ohio State, Soph.

    Kevin Hogan – Stanford, Fr.

Taylor Kelly – Arizona State, Jr.

    Taysom Hill – BYU, Fr.

    Bo Wallace – Mississippi, Soph.

Mike Scott – Arizona (eligibility completed)

Not exactly all household names, but all are very good QBs for their teams and notice all of their teams made it to a bowl game and all except two, Lynch and Martinez lost in the bowl game. Miller (OSU) was ineligible, but if they were they probably would be playing for the national championship. Hill, injured did not play against SDSU in the bowl game. The point is dual QBs are highly coveted because of their athletic ability and they can manufacture a lot of points for their teams. That’s why I’m excited about the possibilities of Aaron Zwahlen when he’s able to play.

A few suggestions as to who should replace Scott Caan (if it ever happened)…

Someone on Facebook suggested Andy Bumatai.

WarriorNY suggested Alan Tudyk (from Firefly/Serenity)

gobows suggested Augie T or Nani Cockett

    Kekoa suggested Homey

I suggested his father James Caan or Eric Balfour.

–my apologies if I missed some…

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

On further review, I think Homey !!!

  189. jm2375 (iPad) January 28, 2013 7:37 pm

#182 – it’s impossible to score less than 400 on the SAT (200 per section). ACT scores range from 1 to 36.

  190. Derek January 28, 2013 7:42 pm

I think Dan-O should be replaced by transferring Deek (Eric Olsen Christian) from Los Angeles (NCIS-LA), and then replace Deek with Rizzoli!!!!!! Either that, or make the Rock the new side kick to McGarret, with a different name. Hey, if they can come up with Kono Kalakaua and Chinn Ho Kelly, they can come up with something easy. Just thinking out side of the box.

  191. kapakahi January 28, 2013 7:43 pm

    #185,

Must be his ACT score…..not his SAT score.

  192. WarriorNY January 28, 2013 7:45 pm

    SteveM,

I still like my suggestion of Alan tudyk..(Death at a funeral, Dollhouse and Transformers 3 as well)

But I respect Mr. Kekoa and will jump on the “Homey” train as well… 🙂

I hope everyone is having a great night..

  194. Inyoface January 28, 2013 7:50 pm

If D. Graves has a shot at playing qb at another school, even at DII , he should take it. I think it would be a waste of talent if sits out his senior year.

  195. Inyoface January 28, 2013 7:52 pm

Jason Lee and Jason Momoa to replace both Caan and McGarrett.

  197. kama krab January 28, 2013 8:08 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

All spread offenses can be stop pretty easily. It’s all about being disciplined in your scheme and staying active. Out of all the offenses I have seen in college football today, the most daunting to stop is still the pro set. The only reason it will not work very well in Hawaii is the fact that you need them big hogs inside to create the holes. Without that, Hawaii will not be very successful. A good running game mixed with the play-action is still one of the hardest offenses to defend. IMO

Oh and out of all the spread offenses, the R&S is probably the easiest of all the defend. A good pass rush makes the R&S non-effective. That is why you are seeing JJ having such a hard time getting SMU to that next level like he did for UH.

  198. al January 28, 2013 8:11 pm

    hi

  199. kama krab January 28, 2013 8:13 pm

    But I agree with most,

It would be good to throw in some spread option plays in his play book to keep teams guessing. Read option would be most preferable along with the wildcat, which I thought would suite David Graves to a tee and would probably suite Keelan Ewaliko very well also.

With a pass, run, handoff, and option threat, you open up so much possibilities.

  200. Haleakala January 28, 2013 8:18 pm

I hope David Graves stays in Hawaii not because of football but because he has great character. He has a bright future and Hawaii needs future leaders like him. People in the know will not forget his dedication to the program.

  210. PurpleMaple January 28, 2013 8:57 pm

It looks like a good recruiting class, but must wait to see how the team performs this coming season. Hoping that Chow proves all the naysayers, including myself, to be wrong. This past season was so bad it is difficult to imagine significant improvement, regardless of the influx of new players. Well, for sure the defense will be better. But hey, the jury is out till the team takes the field against USC. Need to see what the offense can do and a chance to see what a “Chow” offense can produce. Can’t wait for the first game.

  211. al January 28, 2013 9:01 pm

we actually ran a number of four wide sets last year.

it was evident that inconsistent line play was the bane of our poor offensive output. the inability to create separation by the wideouts whether because of lack of speed or insufficient time to create space and the dropsies really hurt us. it is why we’ve gone after olinemen and a bevy of wr’s.

ss spent too much time either on his butt or running away from being on his butt because of poor blocking as well as not finding a wr who could get open. our best wr gets doubled down , brs, and no one else is open.

surely, the injuries to many of the olinemen also wreaked havoc. hopefully, for one, we can ramp up the strength and conditioning program such that we produce a much stout lineman to endure the rigors that a d1 program demands.

open some holes and seal the pass rush = a more productive offense.

  212. Chicken Grease January 28, 2013 9:04 pm

What about . . . a character from ANOTHER CBS series joining the 5-0 task force? NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit did this with the character Detective John Munch, from the GREAT Homicide: Life on the Streets.

That character appeared in other series, not just NBC shows. (anyone remember The Lone Gunmen, spin off from The X-Files and so, ergo, by inference, X-Files takes place in the same universe as the Law and Order series [and Cops, too, for that matter. [!])

A Grease is a nerd. (and a Grease hardly WATCHES TV[!])

  217. Bryson January 28, 2013 9:25 pm

I still find it quite funny that no one holds SS accountable for making poor decisions and holding on to the ball too long…it was also pretty apparent that he loved to stare down his primary reciever….so if we’re gonna mention everything the other positions didn’t take care of then we gotta mention them all…fair is fair….

  218. al January 28, 2013 9:43 pm

tough to do a 13th game these days with the last week reserved for a possible conference championship looming at bay.

is it more important to have a second bye in the schedule or to appease the fans with another game?

  221. NotNasti January 28, 2013 9:51 pm

There was plenty of blame to go around last year. That’s what happens when you lose, and lose badly. We were not competitive in most of our games. SS was bad, O-line was bad, D-line was decimated by injuries, linebackers and secondary (except Edwards) were newbies. At one point in the season, we started four freshmen linebackers, a freshman corner and safety. I think coaching was sub-par as well. If you ask Chow, I bet he will admit that he needs to do a better job next year. Hopefully, with a year of head coaching experience, the coaching will be improved as well. I can hope, can’t I?

  222. dannyp January 28, 2013 9:52 pm

    213

They weren’t pure 4 wide sets though. Chow always keeps his base 21 personnel in no matter the formation. This is why he needs multiple/hybrid players. Cause last year instead of Reggie Bush in the slot we had Iosefa.

Also Chow should have registered that we didn’t have the Oline to protect the QB long enough for the long routes to develop and that SS didn’t have the arm to get the ball there anyway. Looking at these two factors Chow should of added in more short patterns IE jailbreak/bubble screens. Shallow cross etc to make up for it. Look at the 2010 Nevada film. Rolo knew we couldn’t handle DE Dontay Moch so we ran bubble screens and draw plays all day. Good coaches conform to talent. Rolo is a good coach, Chow…..

  223. gobows January 28, 2013 10:04 pm

if the line couldn’t block long enough for the qb to throw the ball, why didn’t they shorten the routes, shorten the drop back and throw the ball sooner. i remember 1 drive when they kept throwing to davis on quick slants. they just kept moving the chains…then they stop running that play and they lost 7 straight.

when it comes to football games, the #1 goal is to WIN. the coaching staff did very little to show they have what it takes to win games. what the hell happened in the Nevada and New Mexico games. coaches sure laid an egg in those 2 games. 0 1st downs in the second half against air force.

i would have to give the coaching staff a grade of D- or an F. cant just blame the players, blame the coaches too.

  224. kama krab January 28, 2013 10:07 pm

Bottom line is the WR’s and Linemen NEED to get stronger. Like I said earlier, in order to run a pro-set offense properly you linemen that can kill people. You need WR’s that are not only fast but powerful.

Line play last year was subpar at best and WR play was horrible. Thus the QB play was just as horrible. Everything NEEDS to get better not just one aspect of the team.

  225. hossana January 28, 2013 10:10 pm

All of you should stop yapping about how good Rolo was as an offensive coordinator and all that b.s. Think back in the middle of the season when Role and Mack were the coaches….I could tell you that there were quite a few blogs criticizing Rolo’s play calling and predictability which were the reason for defenses stopping UH’s attack…and don’t forget, even under ROLO and MACK, attendance were going down, people were criticizing Mac and Rolo and there were major disappointments all around….go back and check the news articles and refresh your memories on the blogs criticizing rolo and now we get all these idiots praising Rolo and how great an OC he would be and all that b.s…the same thing with JJ in his second and third years when he said he needed to recruit the type of players for his system and when his record was less than outstanding and when Tomey came in, in his second or third year when they played Arizona and after Arizona laid a physical beating on UH, he said he needed to recruit the type of players Arizona had…physical and tough with mobility….and with that he succeeded in the following two yrs. to recruit such players and therefore UH was more competitive playing big time opponents …well, we just didn’t have that kind of players this hear and NC had to do with what he had and now, if you look at the recruits he is getting, they big and physical…look at the WR…tall, and fast…he is also getting the tall, big, and physical lineman….playing in that punky WAC conference enabled JJ to get by but they certainly didn’t deserve to be in the Sugar Bowl…not with the type of competition they played and just getting by, also…they were no match for Georgia who played a traditional offense and base defense when they only rushed their front four and their offense was just basic pro and look what happened…plez don’t give me this crap about the r&s and all that b.s….NC is chg. the system and culture to adapt in playing the teams in the Mountain West…..Fresno St. was successful because the coach had many veterans returning and their players were heads above our players in talent…..unfortunately, like I said, NC had to do much with little so it will take time to build his program with the type of players needed and besides this yrs. recruiting class, he will need another successful venture for the 2014 recruiting class….so all of you just shaddup and be patient……and let NC and his staff do their job…..

  226. Moocher January 28, 2013 10:11 pm

    JJ first’s year…..

    ok chow haters argue this.

JJ was better then chow in year 1. However, chow in his first year matched JJ’s win count in JJ’s second year…am I right?

so… can we all and must we all agree that in chow’s first year he’s already at where JJ was in 2 years.

if people concede and agree jj was better then chow in year 1, then we must also concede that in chow’s first year he was just as good as jj in jj’s year 2.

bottom line, chow has this team 1 year ahead of schedule if you want to go with jj’s clock. is this not something to we can all be positive about for chow and the warriors?

  227. kama krab January 28, 2013 10:12 pm

Do I think Chow can change things around, definitely. Do I think he needs time, definitely. Do I think he will get enough time, probably not. Does he need to win now, probably this year if not definitely next year. Is he putting together a recruiting class this year that will make the team better, I really think so. Right now it’s all about building. Come August, it’s all about winning. Bottom line

Rolo is a good offensive coordinator. He adjusts to his players. Its not his fault Mack wouldn’t let him morph the offenses into more of a spread option look.

  230. kev-1 January 28, 2013 10:24 pm

#219 . . . I do. Not saying he was solely to blame, but definitely was part of the problem.

  231. gobows January 28, 2013 10:25 pm

mack had handcuffs on rolo. rolo wanted to modify the rns, but mack wouldn’t allow it. mack wanted to stay true to the original mouse davis rns.

so it now appears that NC is having the same hard head moment like mack had. NC needs to be more creative and forget about the balanced attack. so far it hasnt been very hard to out coach NC.

  232. dannyp January 28, 2013 10:28 pm

    225

Exactly it seems like such a common sense solution but it didn’t happen.

You don’t buy what you can’t afford.

You don’t run a offense you don’t have the pieces for.

  233. dannyp January 28, 2013 10:29 pm

Gobows you sound like my echo lol thank God someone agrees with me.

  234. kama krab January 28, 2013 10:40 pm

You know I understand what is being said about our offense last year but with hindsight being 20/20, I actually like the fact that Chow did stick to his guns and stayed with his pro-set offense that whole season. The reason I say this is because he got to see what he had under live fire. He got to see who could run his offense and who couldn’t. He got a chance to see what more he needed and who he needed to weed out. Yes it was pretty ugly, but I can see the reasoning behind it(not saying that this was the reasoning). Now with a good map of the real needs of the team, you are seeing a lot taller and faster receivers. You are seeing a lot taller and more athletic O-linemen. And you see more speed and strength on the defensive side. Hopefully with a solid mix of returning players and these new player, UH can begin to start winning more games.

Oh and of course those returning players must get faster and stronger.

  235. Moocher January 28, 2013 10:43 pm

    still bashing SS?

yeah…that’s why coach is getting receivers with size and speed who can separate and linemen.

…and by the way if my receivers could not run routes right or separate, I’d be staring them down too to look for that one moment they can do their job and follow their assignment.

too easy to want to blame SS.

the way i see it….coach recruited qbs his first year and believed receivers were good enough, they weren’t. he also found out the line was not good enough not deep enough.

in year 2, it’s plain to see he has no faith (or at best limited faith) in the existing receivers and looks to spread it horizontally and vertically–something that was not a consistent option last year.

it’s pretty easy to see with no line, no receivers, you got no qb, or one that will look bad. blame the qb when you do have a good line and good receivers.

If SS sticks around, with a better line and catchers, I think he would look like a totally different qb.

  236. what January 28, 2013 10:44 pm

    #110

Reserve Aloha Stadium for the 13th game.

Tell season ticket purchasers that the season ticket does not include the 13th game.

Play 13th game if an opponent can be found midseason and UH does not have a 6-6 record or is in the playoff.

  237. kev-1 January 28, 2013 10:51 pm

funny . . . its okay to blame receivers, but not blame SS. Why can’t the offense as a whole share the blame for ineffectiveness? Coaches, players, system transition, etc. ALL factor in.

  238. jonj January 28, 2013 10:52 pm

IDK if you guys watched the games at all. But seemed to me that more than 50% of the time chow was in a shotgun/spread formation. We had the pieces for that offense and he still couldnt get it done! hes a “OFFENSIVE GURU/MASTERMIND” why couldnt he get it done?!?!? Ill tell you why becuz he kept SS in the game!! maybe the lefty throws threw off the WR’s catching abililty?? those same guys didnt drop the balls last year

Im hoping this was all part of Chows plan. To weed out a bunch of players make room for his even tho hes losing some good ones! So far Im not seeing the Olinemen needed to play right away coming in. Its gonna take more than Wa’a and Griffin. Elijah/kolomatangi is a year or two from playing weight

  239. Bryson January 28, 2013 10:57 pm

Re#238:Who’s bashing I’m just relaying what I saw and it was a team effort in the offense being horrible…But no one wants to really mention the QB as being part of the problem go and watch any of the games last season and you’ll see that SS does not go through his progressions and stays locked onto 1 reciever…thus if that wr is running say a deep pattern that forces the o-line to block longer the o-line can only hold there blocks for so long and if the other WR’s ran there routes but weren’t being spotted cause SS was still locked on to the primary wr what do they do?

  240. dannyp January 28, 2013 11:01 pm

    238

When you have receivers running drag routes with 12 yards of YAC available but you’re QB is staring down a post route thats double covered you can blame the QB. You can also blame the QB when he doesnt look at his check downs even though the RB is leaking out uncovered.

  241. Moocher January 28, 2013 11:04 pm

somehow i can see hawaii dropping to a lower division. we got talented players. but no money and fickle fans will dictate where the program ends up.

this deal with the mwc will i think be the end of D1 football at hawaii. rockne the rabbit had blinders on and wanted to get us in the mwc so fast, he pushed aside jd the turtle who was going slower and could see more and plan more for things such as what happens a championship game clashes somehow with or 13th game?

rockne-where are you now? why don’t you go twist thompson’s arm instead of making the whole state bend over for him? in case you can’t see he’s screwing us and your okole like everybody else’s is looking beeg and joocy to him.

im getting the impression the mwc is showing us the door.

  242. A-joe January 28, 2013 11:19 pm

    Aloha my longtime Tsaiko ‘Ohana.

Mahalo nui loa for all the kind well wishes on my birthday. I do miss you all. But seeing you all here is the next best thing to being at a T-gate. I promise to make my way to a few games this fall. Maybe even a few Tsaiko off season gatherings

A-House- funny you asked. No little birdie. I simply took a good look at the conference itself. There were several things that stuck out like a sore thumb. One being if the conference was that good, why were so many schools bailing? Didn’t have to dig deep to see the conference was built around basketball powerhouses. Connecticut, Georgetown, Providence, St. Johns, Seton Hall, Syracuse and Villanova. Football was either secondary or non existent. But as the BCS grew in stature, so did institutions with solid football programs say on what the conference would do. Basketball institutions scoffed at football programs but liked the money that came in. Football programs grew tired of the old basketball boys network and decided to bail and take their money earnings elsewhere. Boston College, Miami, Rutgers, West Virginia, V-Tech, Temple have all left. Louisville, DePaul and Marquette are soon leave as well.

Trouble in the conference goes back to it’s leaders. Dave Gavitt did an excellent job in building the conference into a basketball powerhouse from ’79 to ’90. Mike Tranghese took over and had the unenviable task of bringing the Big East into compliance with the BCS era. Ever since it’s inception, the Big East has always been on the brink of being released from the BCS. Year after year Tranghese would ask his cronies inside the BCS to grant the Big East to retain it’s AQ status. John Marinatto stepped in and tried to retain those contacts to no avail. He also had to convince the old school basketball institutions to humble themselves to the football powerhouses. They all scoffed. Marinatto could not bring both sides of the conference to an agreement. He loss control and began to make radical inclusions of teams that had no business being in the league. One being Boise State.

As much as everyone believed all the stories published about Boise’s inevitable move it just didn’t seem logical. Granted, $10 mil a year in extra revenue would make any AD salivate. But if that’s soo good, why were teams walking away from that deal? Some made unilateral financial moves. Others took a loss in revenue. So why move? Literally, the house became unbearable to live in for programs. Easier to just move on.

Boise brought nothing to the table other than football. Big East didn’t anything else other than football. Boise was having a hard time sticking their Olympic programs into another league. Especially after the WAC collapsed. Mainly because Boise screwed over every conference to get themselves ahead. They screwed over the Big Sky to get into the Big West. They shafted The Big West to get into the WAC. They stepped all over the WAC to propel themselves into the MWC. Only to screw the MWC to get into the BE.

  243. Moocher January 28, 2013 11:33 pm

yeah SS looked like he was standing at the street corner waiting for an opening to cross the street many times.

    why?

    no opening?

yes he coludve been better but there are 10 other people trying to execute and we are not seeing what all 10 other guys are doing each play. And my bet would be at least 1 of the 10 guys missed an assignment or did not execute more then SS did.

no matter….we will see differently, i respect that.

coach is already fixing things. let’s all get excited for whats happening 🙂

  254. Shoko January 29, 2013 5:35 am

Nevada just picked up a three-game series (’13,’14 and ’19) with BYU. They replace their home game with Oregon this upcoming season with BYU and rescheduled the Ducks’ game for 2019 at Autzen. Not sure this is a good deal ($$$) for the Wolf Pack as it was a home game, but at least they lessen their SOS since they’re already slated to play Florida State and UCLA (both away games) this season; which according to the RGJ was the objective.

I think the Hawaii-BYU game for 2014 is also history. I’m a bit concerned to hear about this.

  255. 3-Prong January 29, 2013 5:38 am

Things that make you say “Hmmm”. Ever notice that the brothers have adopted our local way of saying “Brah” instead of the passe “Bro”. Shaka Dat!

    ………..oh and Go Warriors!

  256. wasabi January 29, 2013 5:41 am

To throw away a whole season is unforgivable. Probably lost over a million in revenue. Why couldn’t Hawaii have hired an up and comer like Mike Macintyre or a younger Jim Harbaugh type. We hire a 68 year old man as a first time head coach and say it will take his system four years to be successful …making him 72 by the time it’s ready to work. Who does that?

  257. tom mui January 29, 2013 5:46 am

  265. wasabi January 29, 2013 6:37 am

262-Ha…I noiced that too….must be a way of thinking. To me the haters are the ones who bash players. We will see which way the pendulum swimgs once the 2013 season rolls around

    Until then….

  266. Chicken Grease January 29, 2013 7:08 am

Heh, right on wasabi; good morning to you as well.

A Grease’ll eat crow if Chow slips, slips, slips (and, recall, a Grease predicted — sadly — a 6-6 season for the Warriors later this football season, so, that’s acceptable to a Grease for the upcoming season 😀 )

But, Chow haters better eat their crow as well . . . same way the Manti lovers need to eat their crow that’s been in front of them, cooked nicely, and on the plate.

  267. duffer January 29, 2013 7:21 am

    A-joe #245,

    First of all, Happy Birthday!

In regards to paragraphy #4, teams were leaving because $15M-$20M/year is better than $10M. Also, anyone would choose membership in the B10 over the BigLEast.

  272. helencalif January 29, 2013 7:54 am

#202. Thank you for our kind words for David Graves. He is taking his last classes at UH for his minor (music) right now. He will graduate in May. Completing his studies, graduating from the Univ of Hawaii, and learning about and experiencing Hawaii’s music was his goal. Right now he is first chair sax player in the jazz band. Those who know David probably know that he played sax in the top high school jazz band in the nation when attending high school in addition to playing football. He plays other instruments in addition to the sax (piano and several guitars, folk not heavy metal rock). One of the major factors for DG to choose to attend Hawaii over Reno was Hawaii’s traditional and non-traditional music — instrumental and voice.

DG completed his major in December (in 3-1/2 yrs.) because he took classes every summer in addition to attending summer football practice and keeping up in the weight room. He is not transferring anywhere to play football. His football dreams came to an end last year.

However, he is still a Warrior and always will be a Warrior. He loves Hawaii; he plans to stay after graduating in May.

  273. WarriorMojo January 29, 2013 7:54 am

“not a good practice” is a mega understatement.
