K5 to televise tonight’s UH baseball game

Yep, K5 has agreed to televise tonight’s baseball game between UH and Louisiana Tech in the opening round of the WAC Tournament.

* * *

The search commitee for the next UH women’s basektball coach has extended invitations for in-person interviews to  five candidates. Former UH assistant coach George Wolfe is the only one with Hawai‘i ties. The first interview is tomorrow.

* * *

In case you’re wondering, Colt Brennan said he does not have a Twitter account. Told that two have been opened using his name, he said: “I’m disturbed by that.”

* * *

The summer conditioning program begins Monday, but several Warriors have been working out on their own. Here’s wideout Rodney Bradley:

Greg Salas said he welcomes the move from left wideout to left slotback.
“Wherever I can help the team, that’s what I want to do,” Salas said. “It helps that I knew the outside so well. I knew what the inside (receiver) was running on my routes (as a wideout). It wasn’t too hard of a transition. It’s good. It’s nice. It’s different. It’s better for me.”

New sushi and noodle bar at the Snoqualmie Casino. Going to check it this Saturday. Curious what the natives will serve up. At least Asians (Vietnamese) were manning their Mongolian Grill.

    Morning Tsaikos!

Here in Columbus Ohio. Will see if we can visit OSU campus later today to see their fb stadium.

Good luck to the BaseBows. With all respect to Al, I hope there’ll be a way to get updates on the game today. Anyone have a suggestion?

  17. Loa May 21, 2009 4:52 am

    morning gang!

oldie – had a chance to see the horseshoe years ago, awesome site to see in person, actually found it by mistake while cruising around

  18. oldie May 21, 2009 4:59 am

    Hi Loa!

More so want to see OSU stadium. Hope we have the time to do so.

  19. whitey May 21, 2009 5:00 am

good morning tsaikos. this is going to be a fun day. best to all of you.

  20. Loa May 21, 2009 5:07 am

oldie – sorry for he misnomer, when i said horseshoe i was referring to the stadium, at least thats what a michigan alumni friend called it, the structure in one of the endzones is shaped like a horseshoe and at that time was used also used as an athletic dorm.
funny story was while looking for the campus we wound up on the wrong side of the freeway and in da hood

  21. Loa May 21, 2009 5:09 am

whitey – howzit, back home yet?

  22. whitey May 21, 2009 5:13 am

  25. Loa May 21, 2009 5:20 am

whitey – have a safe flight and good luck today, i’m sure some maui merchants are missing you 🙂

  26. Garret May 21, 2009 5:22 am

    madeinhawaii,

I think that both the MWC and the WAC are at the minimum number of teams (9) to have a viable conference. Any less and scheduling becomes messy.

  27. Garret May 21, 2009 5:25 am

How did Kris win last night? Less than 100 million votes…and 38 million of them were from Arkansas!

It was the Arkansas vote!!! AT&T confirms 38 million votes from Arkansas alone.

  28. Loa May 21, 2009 5:26 am

Garret – too bad they cannot figure out a way to combine the two and create a super conference

  29. Loa May 21, 2009 5:27 am

BigWave96744 – fast times, that scene was classic

  30. djmitcho May 21, 2009 5:35 am

    Good Morning All!

whitey, I’m not like wafan, I don’t get up early unless I gotta catch a plane. I get up 30 minutes before i have to be at work…40 if i need to shower.

BigWave, thanks for all the fun facts! I enjoy your one liners after the birthdays

  31. Stretch May 21, 2009 5:45 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Only George Wolfe with Hawaii ties?? That mean Dana Takahara-Dias and Gavin Peterson are out?? I was thinking that Takahara-Dias would have worked out well. I have to trust that the committee knows what they are doing.

  32. Garret May 21, 2009 5:50 am

Even though almost all D-IA schools have student athletic fees and other revenue sources that UH doesn’t get (concession revenue at football games, etc.), they were losing much more money than UH has been. If each school was averaging a $5.7 million loss before the economy weakened, the situation must be really tough now.

A recent NCAA-commissioned study found that the average Division I athletics program operated at a $5.7 million loss in 2007, vs. a $4.1 million loss three years earlier, and that was before the nation’s economy hit the skids.

  33. Garret May 21, 2009 5:52 am

    Loa,

The top half of the WAC and MWC would make a super conference that would be competitive with the Big East and ACC (in football, not basketball). However, the conferences can’t just leave behind the other teams because of contractural reasons.

  34. Loa May 21, 2009 5:54 am

Stretch – howzit, i’m with you on that, cannot understand how they no qualify when one is a hc and one a former assistant

  35. Garret May 21, 2009 5:55 am

The economy has really been hitting the state of Nevada hard, as I’ve seen in my past two Vegas trips. UNLV is really having to cut back on expenses…and what two sports is Reno going to cut?

UNLV athletics will receive $1.8 million less from the state for the fiscal year that is about to end and the upcoming fiscal year.

UNLV no longer will provide walk-ons with primary insurance, saving another $75,000.

The school also will cut $50,000 from cell phones by providing stipends for employees to use their own phones.

In searching for other ways to reduce expenses, UNLV is eliminating complimentary coffee ($5,900), printing 55 percent fewer media guides ($22,861) and scheduling more daytime practices and games to save on the costs of lights and paying staffers overtime ($10,000). Getting rid of pregame media meals will save the school $5,000.

    UNR might cut two sports.

  36. Garret May 21, 2009 5:58 am

Remember all the headlines and talk about the Utah AG suing to end the BCS system? He sure got a lot of headlines…and now it appears to me that all he wanted to do was to get some attention to raise his profile so that he could run for Senator.

On the state Capitol steps, Attorney General Mark Shurtleff today announced that he will run for the U.S. Senate to help salvage our “blessed but troubled nation” from the slide toward “socialism.”

  37. Loa May 21, 2009 5:58 am

Garret – yes, i was thinking of combining all the schools or would that be too many?

  38. Garret May 21, 2009 6:01 am

Remember the headlines for the anti-BCS fundraiser held in Utah? he had Utah’s head coach there and a lot of media attention…but it turns out it wasn’t actually a fundraiser to fight against the BCS, but instead the funds went to support his campaign funds for his run for the Senate!

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, who has talked for months of bringing an antitrust suit against the Bowl Championship Series, has made the controversial system for picking a national college football champion the theme of his main fundraising event of the year.

Some question the propriety and ethics of the April 28 event, featuring University of Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, because Shurtleff has widely touted his plans to investigate the BCS.

“There’re obviously concerns raised when a politician uses an investigation to raise campaign funds,” said George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, who also serves as a legal analyst for CBS and NBC.

Shurtleff defends the $300 per person dinner’s theme as wholly appropriate.

David Irvine, a Salt Lake City attorney, said Shurtleff’s BCS battle comes off as a political stunt.

“It kind of makes everything sound more like a senatorial campaign event than a serious lawsuit,” Irvine said.

“This is a political event held at the University’s football stadium, featuring the university’s football coach and focusing on an issue that directly concerns the university’s football program,” Levin said.

  39. Garret May 21, 2009 6:03 am

    Loa,

18 schools is too many…then you’d have the schools that broke away to form the MWC break away again, but this time they would take BSU, Fresno, and Nevada and leave behind Wyoming and maybe 1 or 2 others. 12 is probably the maximum you could reasonably expect, but when the WAC tried to expand before the teams that formed the MWC left.

  40. Garret May 21, 2009 6:06 am

    Loa,

It doesn’t really matter, as I believe the MWC rules prevents them from kicking out any schools, and they can only add schools if they are in agreement. So, they won’t combine with the WAC and they are getting such recognition already that they definitely won’t want to share their revenue with WAC teams like Idaho, NMSU, and Utah State.

  41. Buterder May 21, 2009 6:07 am

    Круто, спасибо! 😉

  42. d1島 May 21, 2009 6:14 am

Gotta break thru against LaTech tonight…coming thru the bottom of the bracket will be brutal…

  43. Loa May 21, 2009 6:15 am

Garret – as always thanks for the insight, i guess the increase in travel costs doesn’t help the situation either

  44. d1島 May 21, 2009 6:15 am

    HiHo….

  45. Loa May 21, 2009 6:23 am

  46. madeinhawaii May 21, 2009 6:30 am

If George is the only one with Hawai’i ties, does that mean Dana and Gavin Peterson are both no longer in the running?

    Not looking good.

As a fan, I kind of want to at least be able to peer in to the process.. rather than being shut out. Makes me feel like I’m welcome and involved. Especially in this age of digital media and blogging. Being shut out makes my involvement seem unwelcome and utterly insignificant. “We just want your money.”

Oh well… just my opinion …

    .

    Where’s bhf2?

  50. madeinhawaii May 21, 2009 6:46 am

    Garret,

If MWC goes BCS will that make all the teams profitable … ? Or would each school have to dish out more to be a part of the BCS? I think the base BCS budget is about 2x Hawaii’s and if only 20% of the D1 schools aren’t losing money, then most aren’t all that profitable, are they?

  51. king olav May 21, 2009 6:48 am

    where’s wf2?

  52. Kekoa May 21, 2009 6:51 am

    Good morning Liz…Good morning everybody!

BHF2 is real busy with coaching and mentoring athletes of all ages within his community. From early morning until he falls down at the end of the day, he balances his law practice with his ‘jaw’ practice. His focus, of course, is on paddling. One day he will paddle his rubber duckee into the record books!

  53. king olav May 21, 2009 6:54 am

    more importantly, kekoa

    where’s wf2?

  54. whitey May 21, 2009 6:59 am

all right, see that a lot of tsaikos are up early this am. may the sunshine warm your souls and body and put a huge smile on your face.

  55. NYUH May 21, 2009 6:59 am

A-house and some others asked me more about getting to West Point. Steward International Airport is about a half-hour drive to West Point. I have taken direct flights from Stewart to Hawaii in the past. If you put in directions from Steward to West Point you will get a better idea of the distance.
    http://tinyurl.com/qoma42
    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Stewart+International+Airport&oe=utf-8&rls=FlockInc.:en-US:official&client=firefox&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=us&ei=ooQVSsObDoS08ATD0pHHAg&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1

Of course, you can go through La Guardia or JFK on Long Island and come into Manhattan and take a bus up. Newark in New Jersey is probably a good choice, especially if you fly Continental. You can rent a car and go up in less than 2 hours. It’s also closer to Atlantic City which seems attractive to some.

A bus charter would probably be ideal – from any of these locations. Especially if you want to enjoy New York City.

  56. oldie May 21, 2009 7:00 am

    Hi LizK!

Visited a rose garden yesterday. Not too many roses in bloom at this time of year. Really nice and green in Ohio. Lots of wide open spaces.

  57. Kekoa May 21, 2009 7:04 am

I’m quite sure that wf2 is preparing stats for the tourney today. He will prolly dazzle us with players forecasts, and team predictions that will rival those of any baseball guru on the island.

Who knows?…he may even be spot on!…(for entertainment purposes only, of course.)

Rolo on 1420, high praise for Greg Alexander on his progress & leadership qualities. Also props for Shane Austin.

Still don’t get Rausch though as based on Rolo’s comments he just does not have the “it”. How the heck was he appointed as the starter last year?

Speed kills and Rolo said the receivers will be “killers” this season.

Look forward to meeting you Kekoa. Your story reminds me of a logistical issue. The MTA train , which is quite nice, only goes up the east side of the Hudson River, through Sleepy Hollow. But West Point is on the west side and has no direct train access.

mia moglie and her koffee-clatch assortment of sandwich isle diletantes will be making their first appearance at the LES tonite….
Naturally, early pre-game reservations at Donato’s and a sampling of cocina meridionale cuisine had more to do with baseball fellowship than the lure of hotdogs, beer and crackerjacks.
I usually dont share my sports mania w la capa but like fishing, every once in a while you got to take her along to reassure them there are no lap dancers in the third-base dugout.
Women, sometimes have a narrow definition of passion and unless they are reared on a diamond it becomes a labor of trust in dealing with a man so obsessed with sports (her words).
However, these gals have already set their sights on my couz Vinnie and the name Catricala has them swooning in anticipation. If Vinnie goes yard, expect to see roses tossed on the field together with feline screeching.
It should be fun otherwise and I’ll be at my best–tolerance-wise.

I hope Jobu will make the exception this one time as I am bringing a cigar, wine and chicks.

Selecting a head coach at UH is like being on Hawaiian time. There is no sense of urgency. We might get head coaches for women’s basketball and men’s volleyball by September. I’m just disgusted that it takes so long to fill positions. Hello! Recruiting is just as important in these sports as it is in football. And if the baseball team goes out 2 and out this week, we might need a new baseball coach too! The worse part is that I bleed UH sports so it hurts a lot to watch UH lose. The thing is, I and a lot of other people feel the same way. I just want people who is in charge to be accountable. Jim Donovan, hello, you play to win the game.

  82. Kekoa May 21, 2009 8:56 am

DPK…Tall shadow? Right Church, wrong pew.

  83. SteveM May 21, 2009 9:01 am

  84. NYUH May 21, 2009 9:01 am

    Diogenes Sinope:

Commercial ferries going up the river, like between the islands, are not operating on a regular basis. It maybe a great idea to charter a boat from Manhattan up the Hudson to dock at West Point. I’ll look into that.

  85. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 21, 2009 9:05 am

    WEST POINT:

    Railroad

Metro-North has rail service from Grand Central Station in mid-town Manhattan, up the east bank of the Hudson. Trains to Garrison, NY, directly across the river from West Point, take approx 1 hour and 10 minutes and cost a little under $15. If you don’t have a car, get off at Peekskill, one stop south of Garrison, where cabs are often waiting. You may want to call to reserve a Highland Falls or Peekskill cab. Driving time from Garrison or Peekskill to West Point is approximately 20 minutes.
    Bus

Short Line Bus offers daily bus service from the New York City Port Authority, near Times Square in midtown Manhattan, to the West Point Visitors Center; one-way trip takes 1 hour 40 minutes and costs approx $15. Short Line also has day trip packages with sightseeing and local discounts.

    Driving

    FROM NEW YORK CITY:

Head north to the George Washington Bridge/I-95 South. Cross the bridge via the upper deck (no toll in this direction), and stay in the right lane as immediately at the end of the bridge you will exit right on to the Palisades Interstate Parkway.

    * Approximate driving time from midtown (light traffic): 1 hour, 20 minutes
    * From LaGuardia Airport (light traffic): 1 hour, 30 minutes
    * From John F. Kennedy International Airport (light traffic): 1 hour, 45 minutes
    * Cab fares to West Point from NYC are about $150 without tolls or gratuity
    * Approximate driving time from Newark Liberty International Airport (light traffic): 1 hour, 20 minutes.

Bloggers seem to have cost Wisconsin a highly rated basketball recruit who was a solid commit to them.

“Just to see how these so-called Wisconsin fans, what they had to say on those blogs,” he said, “it really made me second-guess: Do people really want me here?

“Because I know if I was a fan and I heard about a recruit I’d be more like: ‘What can we do to help him?
“And not: ‘Let’s make him feel like the worst person in Madison right now.’

“That is how I felt. I felt like I was in a corner, trapped and I couldn’t get out…

“I just felt like it was so unnecessary. I don’t think I’m that worse of a guy. Sometimes I might be tired and have a little attitude…I don’t think I’m a horrible person.

“These 40-year-old adults talking about somebody who don’t got their license yet. I just felt it was so unnecessary…

“Picture yourself in my position. Rumors going around, you’re just keeping quiet. And you read the article and 1,000 people throwing you under the bus, trying to find every reason, saying: ‘Good, we don’t want him here.’

“It just made me feel bad like I was worthless here.”

  88. Garret May 21, 2009 9:22 am

This will really hurt Wisconsin because this recruit is one of the top 30 recruits in the entire country.

Vander Blue still might play basketball for the University of Wisconsin but he has backed out of his non-binding, oral commitment and intends to re-open his recruiting and look at other schools.

Blue, a 6-foot-4 junior guard from Madison Memorial High School who generally is rated among the top 30 players in the nation for the 2010 class, annouced his decision during a news conference Tuesday afternoon at the Genesis Enterprise Center.

  89. warriorfanny2 May 21, 2009 9:27 am

I wrote a post the other day on Breakthrough or Burst.
An account of our up n down baseball year or more aptly defined by our golden voice on K-Five, Papa Leahey,
    as “a roller coaster season”.

It’s that time of the WAC baseball season–the time when bubbles burst. So, can our bowboyz pick it up one more time…or have they run out of gas?

    I think not.

    This is Tournament ball….aka T-ball.
You take one game at a time and if you lose twice–it’s arrivederci and aloha means adios.

I would rate SJSU and Fresno State as playing the best ball in the last week. That’s right, the bulldawgs–the team that was given up for dead and out of tournament participation.
Their turn-a-round started against Hawaii when they split a series at home than they absolutely embarrassed a hapless but worthy SAC team in a season ending series sweep on the road….that’s 6 w’s in their last 8.

The winner in this T-ball is the team that gets hot and stays hot for 4 dayz!
    We are in it.

Jayson Kramer will lead it off and Jayson has been consistent all year and is among the WAC leaders in ERA. Last time he faced the LaT ‘dawgs they got away with a few unearned runs and Kramer outlasted LaT’s youthful ace Jeb Stefan in going the full nine.

Throw away last weeks menu this week it is ‘tabula rasa’ ala carte….a refreshing de nova start gets anyones blood boiling and I expect that to happen to our bowboyz.

Lol, dont you guyz just love papa Leahey and his sidekick PAL, over 25 years of color and humorous banter—these two will bring Jobu back.

  90. Uce2 May 21, 2009 9:31 am

Hire a someone local. Give them a short contract. If things don’t work out after two years, let em go. If they work out, give em a five year contract.

    Hire local, brah.

    Stop hiring from the mainland.

Same with all other posts at the UH.

If we can’t find a qualified local, then open it up to the mainland folks. I can’t believe that we don’t have someone local is who qualified to take the reigns at UH. Hard to believe. Hire a high school coach from one of the OIA schools, give em a chance. I’d rather we do that then to bring in someone from the mainland, giving away to someone from the mainland one more high paying job a local could get.

  91. Uce2 May 21, 2009 9:34 am

If you have to rewrite the MQ’s to accommodate high school coaches, then do it.

  92. al May 21, 2009 9:45 am

    bad call

as we speak, the university has not authorized the telecast of tonight’s game in hopes that a bigger number of turnstile attendees show up for the opening game.

i don’t think that our “fair weather fans” will show up in droves. but, if we win tonight then tomw they will come.

so, with that in mind the ad dept. should gamble and approve the tv broadcast for the entire tournament.

what better marketing device is there should we beat nemesis la tech on the tube?

it is proven, that inspite of the tv, folks will still come to the les to support a winner. afterall, the les was built with the same tv telecasts from way back when. watching the bows on the tube has become a way of life for the local folks.

besides don’t they get some kind of money for the tourney?

    …nuff said

  93. al May 21, 2009 9:47 am

    “….tourney <b<tv rights?”

  94. al May 21, 2009 9:47 am

    oops two times.

    “…tourney tv rights?”

  95. Jack Flash May 21, 2009 9:48 am

    Good seeing wf2 postings-
“…the name Catricala has them swooning in anticipation. If Vinnie goes yard, expect to see roses tossed on the field together with feline screeching.”
    Priceless!

  96. d1島 May 21, 2009 9:49 am

    al,

I plan on being indahouse tonite…I hope many others will, too.
This is one of the last opportunities to support UH athletes in any WAC championship tourney.
The BaseBows no can hear you cheering at your TV! 🙂

  97. al May 21, 2009 9:53 am

seems to me that a member of the human resources dept keeps dropping the ball. i would think that a hire(s) of this magnitude would take the committee’s recommendations and review it carefully with a fine toothed comb before making anything public and that should be the function of hr dept.

perhaps in the future the only way to insure that a breach of security (i watch too many episodes of 24) does not occur, the committee should be sequestered for the duration.

  98. duffer May 21, 2009 9:54 am

    Kekoa @ 76

    A little trivia….

Joe Gannon, Bev Gannon’s husband, owner of Haliimaile General Store, Joe’s Bar & Grill, and soon to be Sea Watch Restaurant at Wailea was an original member of the Kingston Trio.

    http://www.kingstontrio.com/content/the_players_1.htm

  99. al May 21, 2009 9:56 am

d1….you are an example of what i mean. folks who will go to games will show up no matter how we were doing because they have rainbow colors coursing through their veins.

bringing in tv is the greatest marketing tool for the bows. if they (see them) win….they will come. this is tradition local style.

  100. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 21, 2009 9:57 am

  103. warriorfanny2 May 21, 2009 10:00 am

In my realm of understanding competency and efficiency it begins with accountability.
I have a problem paying someone 6 figures to run a $30 m tax payers program where selections are made through a jerry-rigged committee comprised of resume building opportunists that dot our local lanscape.

    Where’s the direct accountability?
Im niot talking parceling accountability or co-op ad hoc reasoning either.
Expertise is needed and tax paying citizens expect that to be part of Jim Donovan’s contract obligation.
That includes being knowledgeable in all 19 UH sports–especially for hire and fire purposes.

This committee stuff is just plain poppy-cock and fraught with layers of bureaukratic drag and wannabees.

You want mediocrity or less–you are getting it.
nearly 19 programs worth of it….and time is always of no moment.

  104. al May 21, 2009 10:02 am

Excellent point Liz! Duffer, Whitey, BHF2 would also agree to bb on tv for outer islands fans.

  106. SteveM May 21, 2009 10:04 am

I think Al, d1 and Liz sum up the situation about TV.

Overall, I personally think it is penny-ante to think they can draw more people at the last minute on a week night by cutting off TV at the last minute. If there’s any TV revenue, it should offset any one night ticket gain in this case.

  107. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 21, 2009 10:06 am

  111. whitey May 21, 2009 10:20 am

i can understand the financial side of the bb tourney and trying to make ends meet. i don’t think the demand for uh bb on the outer islands is as great as in the past because coach trap and his staff does minimal recruiting of players from the outer islands. i don’t know how many are from the outer islands, but it seems that kolten is the only one. one of the major problem is that coach trap and his staff does not think like coach mc and his staff. they think that uh is represented by only oahu whereas coach mc team represents all of hawaii.

  112. whitey May 21, 2009 10:23 am

Frank25, thank you for your dedication to our country. my best to you and will get to meet and see you at one of our warrior games this fall. take care and thanks again for protecting our way of life.

  114. d1島 May 21, 2009 10:30 am

Thank you for your service, Frank25.
    See you in August! 🙂

  115. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 10:32 am

Haven’t heard anything on Pisa yet.

  116. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 10:34 am

    Al:
UH doesn’t get any extra money from TV if the game is telecast.
What’s more, UH has to pay out guaranteed money to host the tournament, regardless of the ticket sales. The only way UH cuts into what it owes is to sell more tickets. There’s nothing to be gained financially by showing it on TV.

  117. PowderPuff May 21, 2009 10:45 am

Frank25, it was a great pleasure meeting you and can’t wait to see you again. Take care and stay safe.

  118. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 21, 2009 10:47 am

    Ohhhh da cuuuute babies!!!

    Pisa:
Free-agent linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa is not scheduled to visit the Eagles next week, according to team sources, despite an ESPN.com report indicating a visit has been arranged.

FRANK25- You are in our hearts and prayers. See you when you get back!

  119. al May 21, 2009 10:48 am

wow….you mean they get nada, zilch, nothing for tv rights?
    huh?
    does that seem right?

  120. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 10:51 am

    Not for the WAC tournament.
And TV would make only a minimal amount, if anything, when you consider paying for the crew, the satellite feeds, production costs, etc.

  121. al May 21, 2009 10:52 am

    frank…..stay safe and Godspeed!

  122. warriorfanny2 May 21, 2009 10:54 am

Dont forget Don Robbs, his broadcasts are vivid and colorful. Sorry for the outer isle folkz especially those on the big aina that follow young Kolt.
Its a tough decision for Jim Donovan and Im sure not endearing for many.
While I understand the need to break-even on this tournament event, when taken in totality with all the other wastes at UHAD in terms of management in hire, fire, lawsuits and delays–its a a grain of sand on along Makaha beach.
Kinda like Obama cutting back on his executive budget and saving $20 m while spending $11 trllion on bailouts, bonuses, a failing auto industry and a bankrupt State.

For once, UHAD needs to get their priorities straight and nuture good PR with a fanbase that helped to build the LES.

  123. al May 21, 2009 10:56 am

still, don’t you think that the tv exposure is good for the program. to me, it would help draw in more people for the weekend.

of course, winning that first game would be tantamount to a boost in attendance.

  124. warriorfanny2 May 21, 2009 11:00 am

dont get me started on John Fink and the PPV deal!

  125. al May 21, 2009 11:02 am

yup wf2….losing 20-25k in this tournament is minor compared to some of our budget deficits. its a small price to pay when one considers that the primary purpose of hosting this or any wac tournament should be to provide the home team with an advantage of “home cooking” and a more than better opportunity to go to the big dance.

we telecast 70% of our home games. its become a way of life, an instituition if you will.

  126. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 11:03 am

    Re: Hoops.
From what I understand, and I’m out of the loop on this one, one of the local candidates did not initially meet the minimum requirements. But there’s a thing called desired qualifications, and, after a review it was decided the candidate could be credited with work experience used toward the minimum qualifications. But after a second review, it was decided that, no, the candidate should not be considered to have met the MQs, so that candidate was disqualified for a finalist’s postition.
In short, the information was accurate when “Ferd” wrote it, but not so when the story was on the news stands.

  127. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 11:05 am

    Al:
Exposure is good in helping promote ticket sales.
But giving away a product for free, at this point, doesn’t help sell tickets.

  128. Kekoa May 21, 2009 11:05 am

Oh g’on ahead wf2…tell us what you think of Fink!

  129. al May 21, 2009 11:06 am

so before going “public” they should take accurate inventory.
there’s always someone in the crowd that wants to be the first to spill the beans.

unfortunately, jd is taking the brunt of the flack for this.

  130. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 11:06 am

    Go to the game.
    It’s fun.
    It’s affordable.
And you can’t experience Heckle and Jeckle — Stretch and A-Joe — from the La-Z-Boy.

  131. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 11:08 am

The most entertaining thing about live baseball?
Watching PowderPuff try to mix kakimochi and popcorn.
She adds popcorn to a three-quarter-full bag of kakimochi, which is like adding hot-chocolate mix to an already full cup of hot water. It just sits on top.

  132. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 11:14 am

I remember the old WAC, when it just seemed UH has no chance in the WAC basketball tournament because it couldn’t host.
To host a tournament means forking over big money in guarantees and selling a lot of tickets. Tulsa partnered with Williams, an electric company, to get some of the basketball tournaments.
But in Hawai‘i, no company is forking over any kind of money now. Think HECO would sponsor the baseball tournament?
These are all test balloons that have gone splat.
Don’t expect UH to host any more WAC tournaments in the near future.

  133. warriorfanny2 May 21, 2009 11:23 am

Look, the wahine basketball program is a $1m loser and UHAD has been in no rush to seal the cracks in this blackhole. They took their time in hiring a replacement for Goo (Likewise for Riley) than selected a hotdog vender that had been out of coaching for nine years.
Then, they roll over his contract ala Bob Nash with no inspiring “win” record, then go silent amid player allegations of mistreatment…. suspend him and now are involved in a law suit and new hire that is dragging on ad nausem.

Meanwhile, bows baseball has seen a significant resurgence in attendance this season and the program has shown new life at the gate and in fan interest.

You malama our support and entice our gate not amputate its fanbase by blacking out TV.
If anyone can sell attendance it would be Papa Leahey and Pal Eldridge.
This is the type of inconsistent mindset and selfish nature we have seen from McNamara and it just never ends.

Jim Donovan needs to take charge and be the person of Aloha he spoke about after being hired….

  134. Stephen Tsai May 21, 2009 11:29 am

Post-season tournaments are a different breed.
    There are more guaranteed expenses.
If about a quarter of the tickets have been sold, it’s probably not a good idea to televise it for free.
Besides, fans can still buy the WAC telecast. True, it’s only a single camera (a still one, at that), but that means the games are not blacked out.

  135. warriorfanny2 May 21, 2009 11:39 am

  163. Dirty Commish May 21, 2009 1:46 pm

Commish actually has a friend up in Seattle whose uncle was a Bering Sea fisherman. He looked EXACTLY like what one would think an old Salty Sea Dog should look like. Missing a few fingers and everything. Commish thought this guy was quite possibly the coolest man he has ever met.

Then everyone proceeded to get drunk and watch “The Last Waltz”.

    Ah, good times.

Good for Jacob Patek. Getting paid to play football, even in Canada, is still a cool job.

Commish wonders if this UFL league will actually happen. Some players with Hawaii ties set to play in that league. Commish is also curious about the Lingerie Football League… although for entirely different reasons. They are accepting interns, for all you recent UH graduates out there wanting to break into the world of professional sports.

  181. SteveM May 21, 2009 2:39 pm

I’m glad the game tonight will be televised. From a logical business point of view, it is not the correct decision. But from a local historical point of view, it is the smart thing to do.

The original fan base that built the “new” stadium is aging and probably watching from home. The fans appreciate programs that make the tough call in their favor.

  182. d1島 May 21, 2009 2:42 pm

    SteveM,

OTOH, given that this may be the last chance for some of those same fans to see a tourney championship here, it would be great for the fans to show up in great numbers for the BaseBows.

anyone that attends bowboyz baseball and stands by the elevator that shuttles “handicaps” up and down the floors will witness the “aging original fanbase” still attending.
Your fanbase is built on those that love the game and the program and still bring their family members and mo’opuna.
Secondly, kids and youth leagues provide an enormous fanbase.
    Go on Fridays.

Marketing and promotions play a big role.
As does community outreach by coaches and players.

Dont forget winnning, that will sell out the Les everytime.

  188. Kazz May 21, 2009 2:56 pm

If anything, with regards to the BaseBOWS, the possiblity of a low attendance for tonight’s game can be attributed to the poor performances during the LaTech series and ending the regular season with a loss to an inferior ball club.

Then again, the WAC tourney packages went on sale a while ago and if my memory serves me correctly is was before things looked bleak.

Hopefully there will be a lot of walk-ups tonight.

  189. al May 21, 2009 2:56 pm

I’m assuming we’ll be designated the “visitors” tonight as we’re seeded lower than LaTech… so…. anyone hear which dugout we’ll be using?

Technically the dugout we’ve been in for a while now IS supposed to be the visitor dugout out but guess Trap didn’t want to face the sun in day games… SMART!

I got my seats in J mid level for the tourney directly overlooking our usual bullpen, if we’re at the 3rd base side I may have to “move”. 😉

Four Rainbows Earn All-WAC Honors; Wong Named Freshman Of The Year.

    From hawaiiathletics.com:

    5/20/2009 7:13:10 PM

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team had four players honored as 2009 All-Western Athletic Conference honorees, including the WAC Freshman of the Year Kolten Wong, as announced by the conference at the WAC Tournament banquet Wednesday. Along with his Freshman of the Year honors, Wong was also named to the All-WAC first team.

Joining him on the first team are senior pitcher Jayson Kramer and junior firstbaseman Kevin Macdonald. Sophomore shortstop Greg Garcia was named to the All-WAC second team.

Wong batted .424 in WAC play, finishing with 29 RBI, 15 runs, five homers, two triples and 12 doubles. He’s UH’s first WAC Freshman of the Year since Andrew McNally won West Division Freshman of the Year honors in 1993.

Macdonald ended up tied for the conference lead with 11 home runs in WAC play, finishing second with 33 RBI. The junior also finished with a conference batting average of .337 with 25 runs and four doubles.

Kramer was 3-1 in WAC play with a save and a WAC-best 4.15 ERA in 39.0 innings.

Garcia led the WAC with five triples, batting .316 with 24 runs, 12 RBI, two home runs and five doubles. He was also a second team all-WAC honoree in 2008.

    Way to go BOWS!!!

  213. Kazz May 21, 2009 5:07 pm

    Mav,

I’m not exactly wishing K-5 went to HD, I can live without HD, but just some small stuff during UH broadcasts bother me. When a game is televised it is supposed to bring out the best of the product you are airing.

My problems with K-5 UH broadcasts:

-Why does the camera man or the people in the control truck/room think it’s a good idea to film the one lady sleeping during a game? Or the people reading newspapers? OR KNITTING?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!? What message does this convey to the people at home???? No wonder UH’s public perception is not so good in certain circles… tsk tsk tsk. Instead they should scan the crowd for those that are actually into it. Like the guy at the basketball games that sit in section A in the lower bowl that is always standing and yelling or pointing to the referees. How about the Manoa Maniacs??? Regardless of how many there are at a given time 5, 50, or 100, they should have MORE airtime than they are getting now. Young people are always going to go nuts in front of a live TV camera. The volleyball aunties are a good example of putting the right fans on TV. Yes they are older and not as “raucous” but they have those signs all the time and that’s a big positive.

-What is the deal with the sound miscues at Les Murakami or the Wahine Softball stadium??? When players walk up to bat, a song that is chosen by the player is played on the PA system. At times it sounds like the production guys are attempting to channel the same song thru the TV broadcast but it doesn’t come out so well. It goes from hearing Jim Leahey talk to a spike in the volume of the song that you just heard in the background. It’s bad.

-Who does those end of the season video montages? My god, it’s BAD. VERY BAD. I’m talking about those video recaps of the season set to music that is played after the final home game of the season for all sports. I’ve seen YouTube videos with better music and direction than the stuff on K-5.

-When I watch the Sunday morning replays of football games, I don’t know how many times the camera is no where near the action. When watching some of the baseball games, I don’t know how many times the camera cannot keep up with the ground balls or the double plays, etc…

  214. d1島 May 21, 2009 5:10 pm

  215. Kazz May 21, 2009 5:14 pm

    Kekoa,

No one, and I mean no one (that has a clue) can ever question the loyalty and dedication of any Tsaiko when it comes to supporting UH athletics. That goes for ALL Tsaikos.

BTW, I think I have anger issues anyway… But for some reason, I cannot get mad at softball games. It’s a different environment I guess. But it’s SOOOOOOO tempting because the umpires for the Wahine softball games are within striking distance and as Koakane can tell you, THEY CAN HEAR YOU.

But if I were to yell my favorite line of :”HEY BLUE, THE GAME IS NOT YOUR BOYFRIEND!!! STOP BLOWING IT!!!” at a softball game, I would get funny looks, but when I have yelled that at the basketball, baseball, or football games I get laughs and hi-5’s.

BTW, that’s the greatest line ever. You can say it without worrying about the keiki around you. The play on words alone are harmless, 5 year olds won’t understand it, so it’s pono… 😆

    COLT WATCH:

From ExtremeSkins- a mixer with Coach Zorn thread:

    5) He talked about the backup QBs; mentioned that Todd was kind of in a “mourning” type funk last year, but has really elevated his play this year, big surprise really. He thought Colt would possibly over take him, but in actuallity both QBs have grown tremendously. He had a conversation with Colt yesterday about telling him to show him more, some great competition in camp. Even mentioned Chase Daniels and compared him to Joe Ganz (Nebreska QB we cut). Said Ganz knew the offense, but didn’t quite have “it”. Chase is still learning but he gets “it” and is a football player. He was really excited about Chase and what he has seen so far. Said we should see a lot of him in Pre-Season.

The Big 12 sure gets to split up a lot of money at the end of the school year…and the SEC and Big 10 probably gets a lot more than this because of their much higher TV revenue.

The economic downturn didn’t affect the Big 12 much last season. The conference expects to distribute a record $130 million to its membership, an increase of $16.5 million over 2007-08.

Phooey! Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory… *sigh*

Ur right al, Kramer is da man!

  257. Kekoa May 21, 2009 10:21 pm

Liz ~ Just caught a super throw from left field to nail the runner at the plate! That was a major league catch and throw! Doing a Zippy’s thru the rest of the game.

I see why Al is so frustrated. Lots of runners died on base. No can win li’dat!

wf2 ~ No bloody cigars or juju beads for da boo birds. So what can we expect from the Bowzboys now? I’ve dropped the Warrior name tag from authorized use until they redeem themselves.

The other paper reports that there are two new transfers joining the Wahine Volleyball team next season…

Alexis Forsythe, sophmore, a 6-foot-4 middle who played at Houston Baptist last season and Corinne Cascioppo, sophomore, a 6′-3” rightside hitter who played at Mesa State last season.

The following additional info from Sportshawaii’s member, seasider…

    Forysthe’s stats last season: 1.99/K/S, .339 hitting %, .74 B/S.
    Cascuiooi’s stats last season: 3.0 K/S, .199 hitting %, 0.42 B/S.

  261. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 21, 2009 10:29 pm

Yeah, that was a heckuvva throw.

There were a lot of good things that happened – double plays – but too many runners left stranded on base and, well, you know…

  262. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 21, 2009 10:29 pm

I’m going to watch Prince Caspian now.

  263. al ™ May 21, 2009 10:31 pm

  265. al ™ May 21, 2009 10:37 pm

kekaula also mentioned a possible fifth candidate since cynthia cooper-dyke withdrew.

  266. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 21, 2009 10:38 pm

Wow… We need to capitalize with men on base. That home run didn’t cost us the game… We need to hit when it matters.

I stayed till the bows walked back to the dugout to give them a hand. Ultimately they feel WORSE than we do.

Not dead yet damnit!!!!!!!! Still get tomorrow…

  267. Da Punchbowl Kid May 21, 2009 10:45 pm

Yep, Kazz, not dead yet. I see them coming back strong tomorrow.

    Keep ya heads up, Basebows!

  268. madeinhawaii May 21, 2009 10:48 pm

Doesn’t Bonvicini and Vince go back a GOO’d number of years? The program is going to need not only a winning coach but one that will get all the old supporters and fans back, and then some.

So Charlie Wade will be named Head coach tommorrow is that True?

  274. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 21, 2009 11:27 pm

Well, a good thing about the game was that the CROWD was LOWD and ROWDy!

  275. al ™ May 21, 2009 11:36 pm

based on qualifications he would have been hard to beat.
besides the little birdie did hint at that yesterday and the big bird did “predict” those results as well.

  276. vballfan1 May 21, 2009 11:49 pm

Wow congrats to Charlie Wade, I am very happy that he will be the new coach.

I aslo am hoping that Scott Wong can be on the coaching staff.

  277. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2009 12:01 am

    New post is up.

  278. Kazz May 22, 2009 11:28 am

    ST,

How was the mood at UH today with the official announcement of Charlie Wade as the new man in charge?

I can imagine the players must be excited. Did Coach Wade get a chance to meet his new players before he left?

This alone will draw another 400 (at least) to the Stanley for the first home game of the season.

I think if they can get to the MPSF playoffs this season and continue to roll, it will be no time before Warrior Volleyball joins Wahine Volleyball and Warrior Football as the money makers for UH!!!

THERE IS OPTIMISM AND IT’S HARD TO DENY IT!!!
