Back to work

After a one-week hiatus for spring break, the Warriors are back preparing for the final 13 practices of spring training.

The coaches weren’t exactly idle this past week. Head coach Norm Chow was on the mainland interviewing candidates for the newly created strength/conditioning coach’s position.

They also are exploring the possibility of taking the summer camps on the road to various campuses across the state. The plan is still in the “thinking” stage, but there is the belief this approach would reach more students.

Another Beautiful Day in Paradise! Too bad stuck inside at work.

  3. Shoko April 1, 2013 7:30 am

Wonder how much money taking the Summer camps on the road will cost.

  4. 3-Prong April 1, 2013 7:32 am

Oh………..and Go Warriors, Bows and Wahine!

  5. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 7:37 am

Is it against NCAA rules to hold practices at HS stadiums/fields?

  6. rage777 April 1, 2013 7:38 am

Is Chad Ikei too expensive for UH? We need to plead for him to help UH.

  7. Shoko April 1, 2013 7:52 am

I think the Warriors held a camp at the War Mermorial Stadium last year on Maui.

Why we gotta “interview on the mainland”? Don’t we have strength coaches here?

  10. Independent Thinker April 1, 2013 8:02 am

Why we gotta “interview on the mainland”? Don’t we have strength coaches here?

I can think of many strength coaches we should hire and they are right here in Hawaii nei.

  11. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 8:06 am

    #9 and #10,

Maybe he has someone in mind that he has worked with from SC/LA/Utah/NC State etc etc.

  12. tom mui April 1, 2013 8:07 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

As for the newly created strength/conditioning coach, isn’t that someone that Coach Chow should choose?

Chad Ikei has a terrific reputation and well-qualified but it is still Coach Chow’s decision.

  13. jeezy33 April 1, 2013 8:12 am

Chad Ikei probably gets paid more for his side jobs than he would at UH

  14. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 8:14 am

If the position is strictly for football S/T then Chow should probably have the last say. If its another position for the entire athletics department it should probably be the AD.

  15. Independent Thinker April 1, 2013 8:19 am

chow, hire who you want. no one contests that you have that right. But at least do something or say something about your “exhaustive effort” to find qualified locals, and how this effort produced nothing, and then explain that this is why you are doing “interviews on the mainland”.

just don’t like it when hawaii coaches feel they can only get qualified people from the mainland, without first exhausting our local resources.

  16. rage777 April 1, 2013 8:21 am

    jeezy33,

That’s what I was thinking too, but I figure this would be like a part of the year job. If he is only doing this for football players, which seems logical if Coach Chow is looking, then he only has to train them in the spring and the fall.

The players would be absolute beasts if he was training them.

  17. Ballpicker April 1, 2013 8:24 am

Hope everyone had a great Easter Sunday with family and friends.

I do believe if its in the “thinking ” stage

To take summer camps to HS’s then the discussion should be about compliance. But it is a great idea and way out-da-box-thinking.

What about holding it at Kamehameha? Dorms, students not around… Or maybe Punahou, coach Chow’s alma mater. Kahuku, families can take in the players at night …..

Probably to many NCAA compliance rules to consider.

    Go Warriors!

  18. jeezy33 April 1, 2013 8:27 am

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! Welcome back to the real world.

  21. Shoko April 1, 2013 8:30 am

Pretty sure this is a full-time position. Meaning training and monitoring players both on and off season.

  22. jeezy33 April 1, 2013 8:30 am

think its a april fools joke tho

  23. PONO April 1, 2013 8:36 am

  27. Shoko April 1, 2013 8:50 am

Corey Allen and Garrett Nevels just committed to Long Beach.

  28. PONO April 1, 2013 8:54 am

    Good morning everyone!

…and hello (Jesse) James! Glad to hear you survived the pending staff reductions. Just gotta put in a few more hours every day. 😐

  31. kimo browner April 1, 2013 9:17 am

Norm Chow is accountable for his performance. I dont care who he hires–bottomline he must turn his team into a winner. If he doesnt–they all go!

  32. PolyMom April 1, 2013 9:17 am

Good Morning Hawaii fans! Happy to be back in Hilo.

Breaking News…USC 17 injured players. Not able to play Spring scrimmage. Could this be our year?

tom mui,, I got to agree with you…let Chow do his thing.

Hilo already buzzing for the Merrie Monarch.

  33. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 9:23 am

Anyone else hear of the potential 4* transfer from “Da South”?

  34. Stephen Tsai April 1, 2013 9:27 am

    Chow has interviewed local candidates.

  35. clyde April 1, 2013 9:28 am

Shoko @ 27: Is that confirmed, or April Fool’s? If they did commit to Long Beach, I guess it’s better they do before “tripping” here.

  36. Stephen Tsai April 1, 2013 9:28 am

UH is maxed on initials for this year.

  37. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 9:32 am

    #32,

Actually it was reported as 27 injured players from USC. We Get Chance! 🙂

  38. oldtimer808 April 1, 2013 9:36 am

Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia are now with the St. Louis Cardinals Triple A affiliate the Memphis Redbirds. Good for them as they move up in levels.

  39. Derek April 1, 2013 9:39 am

Mariota is eligible for the NFL next year, if he chooses (he’ll be a redshirt sophomore this coming season). If the Eagles finish last in the NFL, Mariota could well be the #1 draft pick chosen by Chip Kelly. Even if the Eagles finish, say, in the top 5 worst record, Mariota could still be picked by the Eagles. Reason is, Johnny Manziel is also eligible for the draft next year, if he chooses to declare. In any event, there is no way Mariota would trade Nike unis with Under Armour garbs. It’s like night and day. A top 10 team vs an also ran. A BCS team, a potential national championship team vs a wanna be. Nice try.

  40. Shoko April 1, 2013 9:41 am

    35. Yep, just taking part in the April Fool’s festivities. As far as I know, they are still scheduled to make a trip out here.

Will be interesting to see if Gib can convince both to come to Hawaii. If I had a choice between the two, I’d pick Nevels. Allen might have some ball control issues, but looks to put points on the board. Not sure what kind of defenders they are, which is something that was lacking during conference play.

  41. Shoko April 1, 2013 9:42 am

If USC loses against Hawaii in the opener, I think Kiffin is as good as gone. 😉

  42. cincodemayonnaisse April 1, 2013 9:53 am

    #31

Please explain this to those that wanted to keep Aranda and Rolo from the last staff….they didn’t win so they all go!!

It’s never that simple or as easy as it seems.

  43. cincodemayonnaisse April 1, 2013 9:55 am

    #15

Know what you mean….just like people hate when people question others processes without first finding out all facts.

  44. Derek April 1, 2013 9:59 am

Shoko, not only Kiffin. Pat Haden too. Notice how bad the USC basketball team is also. And the lowly USC men’s volleyball team. The USC baseball team has been down for a long time. This program right now is in shambles. Oregon and Stanford has surpassed the Trojans. Washington is not bad. So is Oregon St. and Arizona and Arizona St. UCLA has passed USC in Los Angeles and when was the last time did people say that? Yeah, this is the best chance for Chow and Co. to pull and upset. I hope so. Stay positive.

  45. Derek April 1, 2013 10:08 am

Is it a plus that three Mt. SAC players are going to play for the Rainbow Wahine next year in helping land 2 Mt. SAC players for the Warriors. Is anybody of the ladies the girlfriend of either Allen or Nevels? That would help.

And did you notice: Kentucky has 7 basketball commits for next year. Six of them are 5 star players and the other is a 3 star player. On top of that, Andrew Wiggins the high school player of the year in high school is also considering the Wildcats. Now, I don’t think Kentucky can sign 8 new players, unless some of the existing players are going to transfer or just be released and say adios. At Kentucky, not making the NCAA tournament is not acceptable. In fact, not making the final four is not acceptable. Their goal is different. At UH just trying to get to an NCAA tournament is cause for celebration and a state holiday!!!

  46. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 10:09 am

    #44,

It’s like when Carroll left, he took the entire program with him. Nice to see UCLA get its chance.

  47. Shoko April 1, 2013 10:18 am

I think Pat Haden is alot better than Mike Garrett. Garrett sort of left the department in shambles and Haden was hired to pick up the pieces. Not sure if Haden had made any hires since he took the job as AD. Kiffin and O’neill were Garrett’s hires, and Haden fired O’neill and kept Cantu as interim. So, I’m not too sure Haden should take all the blame on the present state of USC athletics.

Which reminds me, JD is in the process of finding Fullerton’s next MBB head coach. The interim was let go and might have been one reason why Fullerton underachieved this past season.

  48. Derek April 1, 2013 10:18 am

Maybe USC basketball I thinking of hiring Gib Arnold. He was an Assistant Coach for Tim Floyd there and Arnold helped recruit DeRozen to USC and Arnold recruits LA and in foreign countries too. As far as I know, the USC job is still open and you know USC pays a lot better too.

  49. Shoko April 1, 2013 10:21 am

Kentucky has been known to recruit one-and-done type players. I think they sign the most compared to any other team at the Division I level.

  50. gobows April 1, 2013 10:24 am

cleveland has traded colt mccoy and their 6th rd pick to the 49ers for their 5th, and 7th rd picks.

  51. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 10:25 am

    Shoko,

I think you are right. I remember watching an Inside Access episode where Calipari talked about so many of his players getting drafted after the first year. He said he must be doing something right if that many of his recruits are getting shots at a pro career. It’s both a good and bad problem.

  52. gobows April 1, 2013 10:27 am

    #48

i hope gib gets the job…he’s not good for Hawaii.

  53. Hodad April 1, 2013 10:27 am

#5 UH practices frequently, or at least they did under Jones/Mac, at local high schools before road games. Apparently not a violation.

  54. Inyoface April 1, 2013 10:31 am

Can we believe anything today? 😉

  55. Shoko April 1, 2013 10:32 am

    51. Very true about the good and bad of recruiting those type of players. But for some reason, Calipari makes it works year in and year out.

  56. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 1, 2013 10:37 am

    #55,

Yep. IIRC one year he had 5 of his players all go in the first round. That is pretty nuts.

  57. clyde April 1, 2013 10:38 am

@50: OK, that better be an April Fool’s joke! @48: Isn’t USC pursuing the Florida Gulf Coast coach?

  58. April Fools? April 1, 2013 10:40 am

#48 – If USC does hire Gib, it better not be an April Fool’s joke. USC can have him!

  59. jimmy the lock April 1, 2013 10:42 am

With the technology we have today, no need fly to the mainland to interview someone.

Congrats to Carissa Moore for ringing the bell in Australia.

  60. rage777 April 1, 2013 11:03 am

You would think that if all the players kept getting drafted after one year, their scholarships would go down. Or is the NCAA not enforcing those rules anymore?

  61. RedZone April 1, 2013 11:04 am

Holy crap. Siren alarm. North Korean missile launch detected.

  62. jimmy the lock April 1, 2013 11:07 am

As far as APR, Kentucky basketball is above the national average.

  65. Warrior Dave April 1, 2013 11:42 am

#53 yes you are correct that JJ and Mack did practice at local high schools while traveling for road games.

But it may be or should be a violation to do it at home when your in campus facilities are available. Interesting to see what they decide and why.

  66. Warrior Dave April 1, 2013 11:45 am

#58 haha good one. But be careful for what you wish for. Not like Calipari and Coach K waiting to coach at Hawaii. I feel Gib was a good hire based in his track record to recruit. I think he needs to improve upon his X’s and O’s before he becomes a good coach.

  67. jm2375 April 1, 2013 11:57 am

What’s that St. Mary’s assistant BB coach that was a finalist for the job doing now?

  69. Bowwar April 1, 2013 12:23 pm

Considering everything, I still think Gib should be given a “one year extension” to show what he can do with his existing and new players. People forget how BAD it was under the Nash years and how Gib practically had to start from scratch…At least Gib has us going in the right direction and hopefully, they’ll break through the glass ceiling next year.

  70. Derek April 1, 2013 12:54 pm

No joke. Colt McCoy is really a 49er. Good trade in my mind. McCoy was a 3rd round pick and his pedigree is that he makes plays. He’s accurate, mobile, can run, and at Texas showed a lot of maturity and leadership. At Cleveland he had a concussion that set him back and in his defense the Cleveland offensive line is not exactly all Pro caliber. His stats align very similar to Alex Smith. To me, he’s a solid backup with experience and he’s only 26 years old, plus he’s pretty affordable at around $2 million in one year left on his contract. On top of that, the 49ers get Cleveland’s 6th round draft pick this year. In return the 49ers gave up a 5th round pick this year and a 7th round pick in this year’s draft.

Realistically, the 7th round pick is not likely to make an NFL squad. The 49ers had 4 picks in the 7th round so they could afford to let one go. The 49ers had 2 5th round picks so they still have one. The one they got in the 6th round is an early 6th round pick which is pretty good. Tom Brady was a 6th round pick by the Patriots. All in all the 49ers are very smart and definitely they got the better of the trade. It’s just like stealing. They still have 13 draft picks in this year’s draft, a first rounder, 2 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, a 5th, 2 in the 6th, and 3 in the 7th. They can select all 13 picks in the draft, trade up, trade down, or trade for future picks. All NFL teams are jealous of their situation right now. Go Niners!!!! We need defensive lineman, and defensive backs mostly. With a 7th round pick, the Nines should select UH’s LS Ingram. No lose situation.

We don’t have the $$$ to hire Tressel or anyone else…

  73. Shoko April 1, 2013 1:12 pm

Funny thing is if that Tressell story were true, he wouldn’t be able to coach the postseason if the Warriors made a bowl game. Think he’s still blacklisted.

Kyle Smith is head coach at Columbia Univeristy. He has yet to coach a postseason game.

I think the APR is adjusted if the player leaves early for the pro’s while in good academic standings with the school.

  74. Shoko April 1, 2013 1:16 pm

More accurately, he wouldn’t be able to coach the first five games and any bowl game until 2017.

  78. Rodney April 1, 2013 3:52 pm

    Imua warrior football!!!!!

  79. UH Basketball April 1, 2013 3:59 pm

If both Garrett and Corey has already committing to LB state…

They better not get free tickets to visit the island.

Gib should be asking for Beeman’s insider help at MAC.

Why not join and make it a family of Five.

Both has the quickness and drive to the basket at 6-0 and 6-2 perfect dual Guard who can scored combine 40+ is a big plus.

  80. Buffoman April 1, 2013 4:09 pm

Winning for UH and us would be great for Warrior football. What needs to happen is marked improvement in the new direction that Coach has taken on to move this team forward. Once we all can see that there are these evident positive signs of improvement, things will start to fall into place.

I for one, like the fact that there is change. Coach and staff will work to strengthen the base of the new philosophy with those who have bought in from last year and the new recruits from last and this year. This, I feel is a key element. If the new base is established and has positive results (not necessarily winning, but winning is most desirable) I think Coach has the flexibility to introduce new wrinkles. Without a strong base, it will be a struggle and the chance for failure would be greater.

This will be an exciting season coming up. Go Warriors!

  81. kimo browner April 1, 2013 4:24 pm

Kaia Parnaby leads NCAA D1 softball in Victories with 25.

Updated NCAA statistics as of March 31, 2013:

    Victories: #1 (25)

    Strikeouts: #2 (250)

    Shutouts: #4 (9)

    ERA: #14 (1.18)

    Walks allowed/7 inn: #22 (1.15)

    Hits allowed/7 inn: #36 (4.62)

  82. kimo browner April 1, 2013 4:34 pm

    @69. JMO.

The Bob Nash era is not a good standard to measure Gib Arnold or any other coach. Nash was fired for poor performance outcome.

The Standard has already been promulgated by Mr Jay, he said he would not settle for anything “mediocre or less”. Arnold’s contract goes further in defining the standard and provides incentives for 20 wins. That in a nutshell–is the mark Arnold has missed in three consecutive seasons.

  83. whitey April 1, 2013 4:52 pm

being a fool on april 1st is all in fun and jest.

  84. Ralph April 1, 2013 4:52 pm

The standard shouldn’t be 20 wins, a weak schedule with a lower tier RPI with 20 wins will not get us into the NCAA or NIT unless we win the BW tournament.

An invitation to the NCAA March madness or at least the NIT would be a good indicator on how the program is judged by the selection committees.

they would bring new meaning to the term “fab five”.

nowhere else would a fab five consisting of a total of five players from one jc team let alone 3 from the wbb and 2 from the mbb squad.

  91. Bad Credit Risk Home Loans April 2, 2013 2:06 am

Hello! I’ve been reading your blog for a long time now and finally got the bravery to go ahead and give you a shout out from New Caney Tx! Just wanted to mention keep up the great work!

  92. rage777 April 2, 2013 3:24 am

You think saying somebody’s name is like saying Coach Chow should hire them? I am sure Coach Chow will choose whomever he wants to and not listen to a blog to find his choice. Just like when UH was looking for a coach, did people not suggest names? Should people not have suggested names on a blog? Can people not suggest recruits on this blog either now?

If you don’t think Chad Ikei is a good strength and conditioning coach, then you need to look again at his credentials. I am definitely not an expert, but you don’t have to be an expert to see that Mr. Ikei has a lot of talent.

  93. Google April 2, 2013 3:59 am

Just a quick note of thanks for the sheer scale of information included here. So far I’ve skim-read the post and it already has my head spinning with all the detail. Time to go back for another read (and probably another afterwards) to try to digest it all a little more!

  95. Pacheco April 2, 2013 5:49 am

No doubt that Chad Ikei is capable. I believe I heard that Coach said that he wants someone with experience training very large groups of athletes in excess of 100 or more, as opposed to someone who is more of a personal trainer. I also think that it’s very helpful if the S & C coach has football background/playing experience, IMHO.

    Imua warriors,coach chow and staff.

Shock the college football nation and

    beat USC!!!!

  101. eticaret April 2, 2013 6:59 am

I’ll not speak about your competence, the article just disgusting

  102. papajoe2 April 2, 2013 7:17 am

OK sorry to bring this up, but I just got back from a 14 day vacation and have been out of the country for the most part and away from any news. How did Chad Owens do in MMA?

  103. rage777 April 2, 2013 7:40 am

Looks like he is fighting on April 6th.

  104. papajoe2 April 2, 2013 8:21 am

Thanks rage777. No wonder no news.

  105. Inyoface April 2, 2013 8:33 am

Last year would’ve been shocking but I think this year we really have a chance at beating USC.

  106. JLo April 2, 2013 8:36 am

I am sure Chow wasnt speaking about Tsai personally but referring to the comments made on the blog

  107. A-House April 2, 2013 9:07 am

I hope Chad O is not injured in his MMA fight cause it might jeopardize his pro football career and $$$ to support his family.

I can see training in a MMA atmosphere, but to fight – that’s another story for another time.

  108. A-House April 2, 2013 9:09 am

    #107:

are you saying that Coach Chow did not like some of the comments on this blog?

    is he that sensitive?

guess being an assistant coach and HC totally different when it comes to public comments, good or bad, about football.

  109. A-House April 2, 2013 9:10 am

    hmmmmmmm!

passed ST’s house around 4:05 am and his car was gone!

perhaps, reason for the lack of a new post?

  110. clyde April 2, 2013 9:19 am

JLo: Trust me, I heard him. He has a wry wit. He was just joking.

  111. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 2, 2013 9:20 am

i’m sure Chow was making those comments in jest. Either that or it’s an April Fools thing.

Show me a football program without any critical fans and I will show you the door to the asylum. Haha

  112. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 2, 2013 9:23 am

The negative stuff that is said on this board are like homilies compared to the stuff that goes on in SEC and PAC12 country.

Check out that ESPN Roll Tide War Eagle episode. (O_o). Folks are nuts!

Lots to look forward to when we become “big time”. Haha

  113. Old School Dave April 2, 2013 9:24 am

No worry people. No need to get all worked up. I heard Coach Chow’s comments regarding the blog and they were very “tongue in cheek.”

  114. wafan April 2, 2013 9:25 am

Chow is not as foolish as some posters would believe. Why would he cut his own throat by bashing the media?

  115. SteveM April 2, 2013 9:26 am

    RE: #109

A-House — have to admit that with most of the original Tsai-kos MIA, the tone of the blog isn’t as positive and self-correcting as before. But Chow is a smart man and would not offend a major, major media guy.

  116. tom mui April 2, 2013 9:27 am

GOOD MORNING – and awaiting with baited breath for the 4/2 WB.

Nice article about eating anchovies for heart health in today’s paper – hence the baited breath.

I’m sure Coach Chow was commenting about some of the (very) dumb observations made on the WB and not on Fearless Leader.

  117. Old School Dave April 2, 2013 9:32 am

Hope Chad Owens doesn’t get injured in this MMA venture. Football being as brutal and uncertain with the injury factor, why would you risk your livelihood and that of your family’s by doing something like that? I read that Owens is earning somewhere in the mid-$100Ks, which is pretty good for the CFL.

  118. tom mui April 2, 2013 9:40 am

#114 – the problem is that many people rush to judgment without knowing the facts.

  119. Independent Thinker April 2, 2013 10:12 am

If chow really did take a swipe at Tsai, which he did not, this would be beneficial to Tsai because it would show Tsai was not a mouthpiece for chow. Truth is, chow was being a funny guy when he said what he said and his comments were directed towards the posters, not Tsai. Good to know he can read though. Always knew he and his family frequented the blog.

I like winning just as much as the next guy, but I would prefer we win using local products before we go to mainland to get more apples.

Does anyone here really think we need mrc and apple in order to make the UH a world class university? Truth is, the UH is already a world class university and we already have the talent here to make it an even better university, without the need to recruit people like mrc and apple.

Did the UH really need a $178,000/year librarian from the mainland? I don’t think so.
