Utah prep LB commits to UH

Drake Miller,  6-2, 210-pound linebacker from Bingham (Utah) High, said he’s accepted a football scholarship offer from the Warriors.

Miller said he turned down an offer from Utah State. He also received interest from Utah.

Miller is a physical defender who chose UH because of  “Norm Chow and his program.” D-line coach Lewis Powell was the point recruiter.

Here’s his highlight video: Miller.

Changes are expected in preparation for this coming Saturday’s road game against Colorado State, beginning with today’s 90-minute practice following a two-day break.

The Warriors will have afternoon practices through Wednesday. They will practice on Thursday morning, then depart that afternoon for Los Angeles, where they will spend the night.

For road games against USC and BYU, the Warriors had a walk-through at an LA-area high school. This time, they will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., on Friday afternoon, then have a walk-through at CSU’s stadium.

This is part of the Warriors’ restructuring the way they practice and travel.

There’s one other change: The Warriors will have a karaoke contest this evening.

Is the weekly press conference with Norm Chow being done this week? It hasn’t been posted on Hawaii Athletics site as of today.

Also, anyone know why Kaumeyer will be pinch hitting for Chow at the upcoming “Call The Coach Show”?

  18. kev-1 October 21, 2012 9:56 am

It doesn’t matter if Graves is talented musically. He probably won’t be allowed to participate in the contest.

  19. Derek October 21, 2012 9:56 am

C-Grease… haha… you haven’t met me yet… Figure out what you are wearing to the HIFF films today & I’ll try to find you in the Priority line for “Tenchi.” I’ll be in the Member line wearing my green UH “Hawaii” UA tee.

Na Koa luncheons: They rotate the coaches speaking at the luncheons. HC isn’t always the speaker. Sorry I missed Demo…

If practice is at 4 pm, no can go… 🙁

  32. Chicken Grease October 21, 2012 10:35 am

Ok hahaha. Will be looking for you. Haven’t laid out my wardrobe for today but a Greease is a tshirt jeans guy :).

  33. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 21, 2012 10:36 am

    Slugger,

Na Koa Luncheons rotate. “Call The Coach Show” does not, at least it never has as long as I remember.

“The Animals” last week said that Kaumeyer will be going in place of Chow. Maybe its because UH wants to give fans a chance to grill/question/comment our lack of defense thus far.

  34. madeinhawaii October 21, 2012 10:40 am

    iwwthm,

UH had a lot of defense these past few weeks. Unfortunately they were all that the Senate hearings on the Wonder Blunder…

    any Inside Access show today?

  38. A-House October 21, 2012 11:13 am

We were watching KIKU, ch 9, and they are doing a time Life special of the great songs called Ten Years – oh, such memories!!!!

reason for this post is that if you order and pay by credit card, they will give you, for free, an Elvis dvd with his so-called “love songs”

now the real reason, is that I served with an officer at Ft Knox who served in Germany as an enlisted man with Elvis and he swears that Elvis asked for and got no favors from the Army as many surmise – Elvis, he said, did everything any other enlisted did including taking all the courses and exams/facing promotion boards.

  39. A-House October 21, 2012 11:15 am

  41. HiFlyer October 21, 2012 11:39 am

    He does now.

  42. wafan October 21, 2012 11:49 am

A Grease should be careful not to upset a Tsai-kette such as Slugger.

    Beware the lead slippahs.

  43. madeinhawaii October 21, 2012 11:54 am

If not the lead slippahs.. the brick and chain lei should give him a good hint…

  44. Slugger October 21, 2012 12:00 pm

Ooohhhh, you guys spoiled a good surprise… 🙂

Chicken Grease, I’ll see you at the movies tonight.

Wish I could attend the karaoke night with the guys tonight, though. Looking for reports from the Tsaimeister tonight. Thanks, ST!

  45. wafan October 21, 2012 12:02 pm

A Grease might seriously consider flowers, chocolates, . . .

Oh, and bring something for Slugger, too.

  46. SAWARRIOR October 21, 2012 12:46 pm

chow should have asked the previous UH coaches about travel and use their experience and inputs instead of this on-the-job training on how to travel with the team. i believe the team should leave on thursday and fly straight to colorado. after all, they are playing in Ft Collins and NOT in Los Angeles.

all that traveling, hurry up and wait, first to LA then all over again to Colorado takes it’s toll. It turns this one road trip to colorado into two road trips. chow did say on his Inside Access show he hasn’t figured this travel stuff out yet, BRAH! ask your buddy JJ, or bob wagner or even tsai how and why things were done the way they were in the past. geezzussss, LOSS MONEY.

this bugga will tire out the players before they even play the game.

  47. SAWARRIOR October 21, 2012 12:49 pm

    #18. lmao, good one Kev-1

  48. Warrior Dave October 21, 2012 1:02 pm

One of the things I could never understand about the Coach’s decision not to walk through at the stadium the Warriors play in.

So they don’t get big eye and take pictures on a Friday. It would make me pee in my pants to walk in on game day with 90,000+ screaming at me. Plus ot would be beneficial for the players to get a feel for the turf, deprh perception for QB and receivers, etc

    Glad they realize it now.

  49. wafan October 21, 2012 1:16 pm

    Where is everyone?

  50. wafan October 21, 2012 1:18 pm

  57. SteveM October 21, 2012 2:22 pm

awww, jm2375… Slugger and her surprises have just begun… 😉

This reminds me of the time early in the blog when Al and a blogger named “sakana” from Maui learned (on the blog) that both would be in downtown Vegas at the same time. Al said he’s staying at the Nugget and Sakana said he’ll stop by and met him.

Of course, neither knew each other’s real name and contact info in those days. The Tsai-ko scrapbook and photo archives did not exist back then. Of course, the meet never happened.

There is much more to this story in the following years. Maybe Al will tell it. 🙂

Not necessarily related to UH team travels, but according to Wikipedia, Los Angeles (LAX) is the 6th busiest airport in the world, after ATL, Beijing, London Heathrow, ORD, and Tokyo Haneda.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_International_Airport

All major carriers fly to LAX, hence the many flights. When you have have many flights to one city, the airlines get aggressive in their pricing. Generally, the most and lowest fare flights are found for LAX.

Since, ahem, UH does not have it’s own charter flights, it makes sense to fly to LAX on the first segment. SFO and DEN make sense too, but there are fewer flights and less competition.

  83. SAWARRIOR October 21, 2012 6:05 pm

    80. yes, fly to lax to CONNECT and NOT to spend a day there, and then the team has to do it all over again to travel to colorado.

go to lax, check in hotel, check out of hotel, go to lax to fly to colorado, check in hotel AGAIN…. bah! too much hurry up and wait takes its toll on folks. that stay in la is BS.

  84. jm2375 October 21, 2012 6:23 pm

Don’t the Warriors fly charter w/in CONUS? Wouldn’t it then make more fiscal sense to go through the same city every time? In years past, didn’t they fly to LAS and take the 2:00 am flight to HNL? Same difference. (Doesn’t Mack have a house in LV? – same logic)

  85. jm2375 October 21, 2012 6:26 pm

For the high altitude schools (BYU & Reno to a point, CSU, AF & Wyoming), IIRC, the thought was to spend as little time there as possible, since it takes a week or more to acclimate and it was detrimental to spend too much time if not going to acclimate.

  86. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 21, 2012 6:27 pm

  87. SAWARRIOR October 21, 2012 6:37 pm

    85. the team is spending the night in los angeles then flying to colorado the next day. tell me please, where is the logic in that? i think you’re misunderstanding the teams travel plans.

btw- from what i understand, the team does not fly charter.

  88. SAWARRIOR October 21, 2012 6:39 pm

well, “call of the wild man” is on. i’ll check back later.

  89. Garret October 21, 2012 6:54 pm

Coach Mack had houses in Vegas, so the team stayed in Vegas

Coach Chow has a house in LA, so the team stays in LA

At least the team will have a walk-through at the stadium the day before the game, I think that is a positive change. There are also a LOT more recruits in the LA area (as compared to the Vegas area) that the coaches can do school visits, etc. while there.

  90. cheap electronic cigarettes October 21, 2012 7:00 pm

    Souls in the Waves…

Very good Early morning, I just stopped in to go to your site and assumed I would say I liked myself….

  91. cee808 October 21, 2012 7:07 pm

As I recall, none of this is new, but it seems noteworthy…

    1) If we lose against Colorado State, the team should have spent a few days at altitude, unless they did, and then they should have flown in that morning, unless they did, and then they should have spent a week at altitude, unless they did, and then they should have played X instead of Y, unless I forgot something 🙂

    http://warriorbeat.staradvertiserblogs.com/2010/02/21/higher-ground/

    2) the UH negotiating team, led by the President, agreed to pay to enable Mountain West visiting teams to take charter flights to Hawaii but expect our team travel coach.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/newspremium/20120726__UH_in_talks_for_relief_from_fees_to_football_opponents.html?id=163829806

    3) The UH President blamed the formed AD for not moving fast enough (“rolling over”) to move UH into the Mountain West.

    anyway … GO WARRIORS!

  92. SteveM October 21, 2012 7:08 pm

Unless we fly non-stop to the final destination city, another issue in UH travel to the mainland is the time. If we left in the “afternoon”, the flight time is approximately 5 hours to the west coast. Add the DST time difference and it is 8 hours later when we land. Unfortunately, there are probably very few connecting flights OUT to the secondary cities at that time of night.

I suppose the option is an overnight hotel or sleep in airport lobby.

Another option is to leave HNL in the morning, but that would mean one less full practice. Also if two connecting flights are needed out of LAX, then you are back to waiting for dawn again.

  93. Slugger October 21, 2012 7:20 pm

    Chicken Grease,

Sorry, couldn’t look for you. Just got into the Tenchi theatre after hanging out as long as possible at the Ua Mau Ke Ea discussion. Maybe I’ll see you after da movie.

  94. Stephen Tsai October 21, 2012 7:42 pm

The stay in L.A. is good because it breaks up the travel. Plus, they have a charter on the mainland, so it’s fine. They’ll get to fly directly to Fort Collins, thus bypassing Denver.

  95. Stephen Tsai October 21, 2012 7:45 pm

The problem on the road isn’t about staying overnight in L.A.

It’s about playing USC, BYU and San Diego State (on fireworks night) on the road.

Also, Chow doesn’t go to his family home in L.A. during road trips. That wasn’t the case with McMackin when the team stayed in Las Vegas.

  96. madeinhawaii October 21, 2012 7:52 pm

The less days spent at altitude the better. Anything over 48 hours and less than 14 days would actually be detrimental.

  97. madeinhawaii October 21, 2012 7:55 pm

    ST,

You ever hear from McMackin? I hope he’s doing all right.

  98. tommui October 21, 2012 7:59 pm

    ST – thank you for your #95 & #96.

  99. Old School Dave October 21, 2012 8:06 pm

Still remember a former UH HC complaining about flying commercial. The team waited for hours at Denver’s Airport for their connecting flight after getting pounded at Wyoming, and watched Michigan’s Football team board their charter after their game at CU.

  100. Stephen Tsai October 21, 2012 8:16 pm

Nope. Few have heard from Mack since he “retired.”

    Not Derek.

    Not any reporter.

Not the trainers, equipment managers, team doctors, or travel agents.

  104. nanakuli October 21, 2012 9:00 pm

I feel sorry for Coach Mac. He was set to go to SMU when UH offered $1.1 million for 5 years. It was an offer too good to be true. We played exciting football for 4 years, but lost a few blowout games on national TV. He was a good hearted coach put in a tough position, to be a strict head coach but he seemed too nice.

How come you never hear about break-ins and overnight theft at Punahou or Iolani? Maybe UH should hire the security company working at those schools. It’s obvious that UH’s Campus Security is way over their heads and understaffed in trying to protect the campus.

    Old School Dave,

Iolani, Punahou, MPI etc are not open campuses like UH. A man walking around UH isn’t weird. A man walking around a private school raises a red flag. Not to mention the number of buildings and classrooms are probably 10 or 20X more than high school campuses.

Another thing is that while looking for a good on-line electronics shop, look for online shops that are regularly updated, keeping up-to-date with the hottest products, the most effective deals, as well as helpful information on products and services. This will ensure that you are doing business with a shop that stays on top of the competition and provides you what you should need to make educated, well-informed electronics purchases. Thanks for the vital tips I have really learned through your blog.
