Back to work

After a one-week hiatus — spring break! — the Warriors resume spring training this afternoon (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.). Among the things to look for:

• The return of slotback Miah Ostrowski, who spent the past three months with the UH basketball team. There will be some restrictions on Ostrowski for practices today and Wednesday, but he is one of the top contenders for a starting job.

• There should be more clarity on the depth chart at quarterback. Backups Shane Austin, David Graves, Cayman Shutter, Corey Nielsen and Kevin Spain received extended work in the first five spring practices.

• The Warriors have been spending extra time teaching special-team techniques and fundamentals. Now the on-field auditions begin.

I hope there’s a big turnout for the on field auditions. I don’t know if we’ve already been using star players on special teams like Va Tech does, but it’s a good idea.

Why the restrictions for Miah on today & Wed. practice?

  21. jm2375 March 28, 2011 6:59 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Back to work Monday. Screecher’s still on Spring Break. Lucky girl.

    Happy Birthday Liz!

Movies – This is the first one we’ve done since the holidays. Uhfan808 has usually been the organizer, but since she’s been AWOL… We set up an event on Facebook and invite all Oahu Tsaikos. Dinner, if before, is usually at a predetermined place. If we decide to go afterwards, we usually make a decision after the movie.

For tomorrow’s movie, I’ve gotten little response, probably because of the late notice, so decided to post it on the blog.

CoolEthan – #20 – I think NCAA says your first 2 practices can’t be in pads.

  22. BG March 28, 2011 7:31 am

Liz…best wishes to an extraordinary person! 축하합

  23. Kekoa March 28, 2011 7:34 am

Sorry I came late to your par-tay…here’s the last part of the song, in my best falsetto voice:

    “Happy Birthday (big finish)…to you!”

  24. gigi-hawaii March 28, 2011 7:36 am

Too bad I have trouble sitting through a movie, especially in a theater. But, it depends on the movie. For example, I am looking forward to seeing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, hopefully in 3D.

  25. BleedGreen808 March 28, 2011 7:37 am

    ST–

What time is practice this morning?

  26. Stephen Tsai March 28, 2011 7:38 am

    Bleed:

Well, a blog host thought the practice was at 7 a.m. But upon his arrival at 6:55 a.m., he ran into trainer Brian Wong, who said that practice starts at 4 p.m.

  27. BleedGreen808 March 28, 2011 7:39 am

    Happy birthday, LizK!

  28. Stephen Tsai March 28, 2011 7:40 am

    Cool Ethan:

Supposed to have two non-padded practices.

I think that’s why the coaches wanted him to attend practices so they would count as non-padded practices. But maybe it’s just as well to ease him back.

  29. BleedGreen808 March 28, 2011 7:43 am

    Thanks, ST!

  54. Derek March 28, 2011 9:26 am

UH special teams in past years compared to this year are just like Apples and Oranges. No comparison!!!!!! As Dick Tomey has said! I just know Hawaii special teams will win some games this year, the difference between a good year as opposed to a “great” year.

Here we go, all the way!!!! Looking for the 4 deep depth chart with out the incoming freshmen. Roughly 5 months before we play the Colorado Tatonkas.

  55. madeinhawaii March 28, 2011 9:27 am

Hmm, wondering whether I should go to practice today. Maybe if I can get some good work done in the next few hours.

P.S. I’ve never understood why they said, “You can’t work on a furlough day, even from home.” How are they going to stop me, unless I say I’m working from home? Oh wait … ignore the paragraph above this one. 😉

  79. Ralph March 28, 2011 2:16 pm

    Akina gets a pay raise

Texas: Defensive backs coach / co-special teams coordinator / assistant head coach Duane Akina will be paid $400,000 annually. Running backs coach / co-special teams coordinator / assistant head coach Major Applewhite will be paid $500,000 annually.

  80. Ralph March 28, 2011 2:19 pm

wasn’t Applewhite Texas’ offensive coordinator last season. A running back coach earns $100K more than a defensive back coach?

  81. Warrior Dave March 28, 2011 2:33 pm

    Happy Birthday Liz!

  82. mctruck March 28, 2011 2:42 pm

  83. mctruck March 28, 2011 2:46 pm

WS, ur#74……another thing I missed….they don’t tackle eachother on the bb court, without committing a foul that is.

  84. mctruck March 28, 2011 2:53 pm

Hasn’t Duane Akina been with Texas much longer than Applewhite?, one would think that he earned his stripes(seniority) and should earn more than Applewhite?..that being said, “no respect.” is what I say!

    However, $400,000.00 ain’t peanuts.

  85. NorthShoreFan March 28, 2011 2:55 pm

  89. 29sTita March 28, 2011 4:29 pm

Maybe not that exciting or critical to you, but people in Hilo are excited that Hogan Rosehill will be returning to the field. He was really working hard at the gym during spring break to make sure he is ready to get it on!!!!

  90. Garret March 28, 2011 4:42 pm

wasn’t Applewhite Texas’ offensive coordinator last season. A running back coach earns $100K more than a defensive back coach?

    Ralph,

Applewhite is also co-offensive coordinator this season. THAT is the reason he makes more than Akina, not any conspiracy theory or haole/local kind of thing. Applewhite is a co-offensive coordinator, Akina is not a coordinator on defense.

Akina is going to be earning $81,000 more than he did last year, so he wasn’t hurt at all by leaving and then coming back. Akina was lucky that Mack Brown got a huge increase in his assistant coaching salary pool.

  91. Garret March 28, 2011 4:43 pm

    mctruck,

Akina DID have his shot at being a coordinator on defense for Texas. The defense did *not* do well under him, and it was good that he wasn’t fired but was demoted instead.

  92. wafan March 28, 2011 4:44 pm

As soon as my post-surgical left ear is able function well – I hope it will soon because right now everything sounds like I’m in the bottom of a very large metal garbage can – I would like to get back into the habit of going to the movies; somehow I always run out of time or money but never at the same time. Will you continue to post the information here?

  104. A-joe March 28, 2011 6:44 pm

    A joke for LizK-

    40 years of marriage…

A married couple in their early 60s were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.

Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table. She said, ‘For being such an exemplary married couple and for being loving to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.’

The wife answered, ‘Oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband. The fairy waved her magic wand and – poof! – two tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.

The husband thought for a moment: ‘Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again. I’m sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.

The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish.

    So….

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!…the husband became 92 years old.

    The moral of this story:

Men who are ungrateful bastards should remember fairies are female…..

    .

    .

    .

    Hau’oli La Hanau, Liz! =)

Then you will know that is correct to suit your needs.

Some would like to see Allen S redshirt. He has speed, quickness and vision. He could use the time to gain more leg strength and prep his upper body for shots he is sure to take as a ST performer as well as other offensive duties. He has 4 to play three. Kinda reminds me of Michael Washington, who btw, did not redshirt. Our current depth chart, incoming frosh class as well as JUCO wideout prospects– Cecil Doe and Chris Gant allow MAC a genuine option to rs Sampson…..

The hottest coach in the business. “Shaka” Smart. He would fit in no problem at Hawaii if the Gibber leaves. I hope VCU wins the whole thing, but if not then I’m rooting for Butler. If one of them win the National Championship can you say “movie.” It would be the best thing since Texas Western beat Kentucky. Can you imagine if VCU or Butler beat Kentucky in the final. I love when the little guys beat the big bad guys. David against Goliath.

b>On this day (March 28) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … count dips slightly to 312 comments. ST posts a lot of interesting tidbits and the first major blog troll (named self “mahalo”) shows up…persistent fellow, before the days of the SMU and “flick” policies. ST introduced us to Karyn Kunz and her “Lost” blog.

The “mahalo” troll was the first to continue posting to engage the others. Previous ones only hit and ran. Looking at the comment count at the bottom, you can see who tried to restore order (and the missing ones probably refrained from getting drawn in). The Warrior Beat is maturing.

Ever notice the Kid says hi to everyone but me?

    Hmmm.

A couple of clicks on the “delete” button and Garret is today’s winner.

Stephen, I think you should take the time to learn to download your own photo from your phone or camera and save it to a photobucket on the web and then use html tags to display your image. Then we could have more sports and food photos!

    Tsai,

bulla and I were on the phone yesterday and decided that we might do a conference call to Cat and I would sing her “Happy Birthday” in my Donald Duck voice. bulla was to dumb to figure out how to do a conference call (as was I) so I made the call by myself. And sang it to her as planned. I think I creeped her out. (everybody else I do that for seems to love it.)

    Anyway, Happy Birthday again Cat.

Best way to stop negative blogging? No even acknowledge ‘um. Jus ignore ‘yum.

Want the blog to be better? Continue to police yourself. Lead by example. No have to stand on a soap box to proclaim your integrity. Just police yourself and do good. Others will follow.

    03/28/07 @ 21:36

AddahknowJoe, I know you haven’t seen it, but this is what schools teach students in preparation for using chats/messageboards/listservs/blogs. To say I agree with you would be superfluous–you have summarized the manual.

It is easy to hide behind the anonymity of the internet and it is real easy to get angry. But as Joe said, ignore it and them. Pretend it’s not there. They’ll get bored and go away and later ST and the Advertiser blog admin will delete them when convenient.

Good Morning to my Tsaiko “family”!

Family, ʻohana – that’s one way to view the Warrior Beat! We may have our disagreements, which may lead to robust discussions, intense debates, and even a rare jab at each other, but in the end, we’re still family. Why? Because we all care about the UH Warriors! And, for many, share some mutual respect and genuine care toward one another – IMHO. So, let’s hope for continued interesting news from ST today about our TEAM!

Just imagine, the excitement and anticipation pumping through the veins of the guys! The Pride swelling up inside of Colt and Herc and Patek knowing this will be their year, their time to lead the Warriors! Never mind what opponent dare stand in their way – Imua Warriors!!!

BWC teams, UCI and CSF are ranked nationally at #15 and #19 respectively.

Upward growth under coach Mike has been painfully slow. He has showed signs of improvement recently, especially in recruiting local high school players. But we are still lagging in hitting.

We begin Big West play in the 2012-13 year.

These BWC guyz can hit and pitch. A legitimate warm-weather college baseball conference set in talent rich CALIF. Hopefully, we hit the ground banging our bats in 2013, our inaugural year in Big West baseball . It will mark a dozen years at the helm for head coach Trapasso. In any program–that is sufficient time to satisfy expectation to build a successful program by any measure.

heard the move of sampson to wr is brilliant. a great compliment to bright. lightening fast. miah and stuz2 at slots , pollard killin it at rwr. looks like we r all good my braddahs!!!.

    anyone go to practice?

  125. Stephen Tsai March 28, 2011 11:10 pm

Sampson is going to be a hybrid player who will alternate between slotback and wideout. While he certainly has the speed to play the slot, he admittedly feels he needs to bulk up. That won’t happen until after spring ball. Although he has gained some weight, he still is a little light.

Billy Ray Stutzmann also is looking for a home. With the return of Ostrowski, it was assumed that Stutzmann would move to left slotback. But for the fourth consecutive practice, Corey Paclebar is holding on as the No. 1 left slotback. He’s a tough kid. Quick background: His father’s side is Filipino; during the move a way back, the spelling of the surname was changed; he grew up in the Oakland area.

Watching/listening to all this jibber-jabber on cbs/espn-networks and NOW!!, they(not all but most) are trying discredit,(Butler’s & VCU’s) presence in the NCAA final four. Based on their views….the selection committe should be based on how the BCS selects matchups for the big bowl games, that being if I’m not mistaken…..the b.s., strength-of-schedule.

I hope their views never come to how the fb manipulation is right now.

Been reading this website for a few weeks now. It was high quality and solid knowledge. BTW, I enjoy your site template as well. I had fun reading it and hopefully you will post more in a few days. Do you have a twitter page?
