Back to school

It’s a fresh start as UH’s spring semester begins today.

The Warrior volleyball team opens the season Thursday in the Outrigger Invitational. The Rainbow Wahine softball team begins training camp this afternoon.

Softball team will be at field at 3, although there won’t be any on-field practice today. It’s going to be weight-lifting session.

Weightlifting on the field? Wish I could be there to see that.

    Morning Tsaikos!

    Relive the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl!

No, not this last one, but the one in 2003 against Houston.  Yes, the one with the triple OT and the infamous fights.

At a request of a fellow Tsaiko, I was able to find a VHS copy of the game (thanks to lurker Dim Sum) and transfer it to a DVD.  Quality is decent considering it came from a VHS tape.

If you want a copy, email me at hoherbatyahoodotcom.

Arnold has a quick trigger to pull players. I am sure they get pulled when they make the same mistake over and over but wonder if it takes away from aggressiveness??

The price for success. After trounching Hawaii, Tulsa’s Todd Graham looks to be the next head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Just yesterday, Tulsa’s offensive coordinator has accepted a position as OC at Clemson. It’s all about moving up and getting bigger bucks for being very successful. Now Tulsa is having to look around for a new Head Coach and it’s not the best timing because of the importance of recruiting season. But, that’s the nature of the business and life goes on.

Notice last weekend’s NFL? The difference is the quarterback play. Matt Hasselback, Flacco, Rodgers all played very well. Sanchez was terrible in the first half, but he came up big in the second half and didn’t make the big mistake. In Nevada, Kaepernick was steady while the Boston College QB was only 14 for 34 w/ 2 ints. Like Jim Harbaugh said, the most important position on the football team is the QB. Moniz is the the odds on favorite to be the WAC preseason player of the year this coming season. Let’s step it up and go for it.

  14. A-House January 10, 2011 10:44 am

After the game, UH playrs went over to shake hands and this one player began swinging his helmet and then all hell broke loose.

Unfortunatley and always the case when it comes to UH, the national media picked it up and you can see who started and kept the fight going. Still yet, media put the stigma on Hawaii is a “dirty” team and the 48 contiguous fell for it – hook line and sinker!!!

No different when it comes to officiating – it’s always Hawaii refs are biased to UH sports even when UH has more fouls or penalties than the opponent.

  15. Hank January 10, 2011 10:45 am

#10…Howzit Stretch…good point, and as you know, it depends on the players you have. Some are mentally strong and will attempt to focus on what they need to do…others will play afraid (this is where Hiram and Bill need to step up). I trust that Coach Gib knows his team.

…speaking for myself, I’m a long way from giving up on this team.

Some have said that there’s something wrong with their offense…but to me, it’s their ability to get stops on D that needs to be the focus. Moving your feet, helping, getting your hands up, blocking out and talking…all the fundamental stuff comes into play. Defensive stops can create transition and better shots.

I’m sure Coach Gib and his staff are on it…hey, we’re 9-7 with a very young team. I’m optimistic. JMHO.

  16. A-House January 10, 2011 10:49 am

    d1:

actually, read the entire blog for that day, but it struck me immediately, that whomever was writing it was preaching “principles” and “strategy”. if the coaches and players can grasp these 2, then it will much easier to “teach” them situations.

will revisit when I have time.

  17. Pomai January 10, 2011 11:03 am

OK I am the first to admit that I don’t know that much about basketball as I’m not a fan of it. But in attending my first game at the SSC we sat behind the bench for the Wahine game and the mens.

What I noticed was that Coach Gib was shouting instructions to his players the entire game and it appeared to me that they where paying attention to what the coach was trying to tell them more than their opponent. It seemed to me that their attention was not focused on the game but more on what the coach was saying, also it appeared to me that they where apprehensive because they would be doing something that would get them pulled.

So the question I have is do coachs shout intructions to the players all the time during the game or just call some type of play?

  18. NCAA January 10, 2011 11:12 am

Well if you do it right then there should be no reason for the shouting and no worrying about being pulled.

  19. tommui January 10, 2011 11:16 am

    TOP 20!

Was glad to see Nevada beat those guys from the Big East!

  20. Slugger January 10, 2011 11:18 am

    rage777,

AC gets in the game occasionally; he’s not retired yet.

Football game at 3:30 pm trumps going to any practices, even if they were on the field (Louisville) slugging away.

  21. Warrior Expat January 10, 2011 11:19 am

    @19

Always nice to see a WAC team beat an East Coast team, although I have no love for Nevada. Kaepernick and Ault seemed like really bad sports in our game against them, and so I was rooting for BC. Still, it’s a really nice feeling to know that they would have been undefeated but for our Warriors!

  22. Kazz January 10, 2011 11:21 am

    Pomai,

It happens A LOT in both men’s and women’s basketball. Coaches are constantly yelling instructions to their players and it’s usually not a motivational thing but literal instructions on positioning, especially on defense.

  23. NCAA January 10, 2011 11:46 am

Do golf coaches yell at their players?

“How many times do I have to tell you to keep your head down!”

  24. Okole Maluna January 10, 2011 11:52 am

Today’s articles on Johnson confirms that they are playing not to make mistakes and get yanked by coach Arnold.

Like Stretch #10 says: “Arnold has a quick trigger to pull players. I am sure they get pulled when they make the same mistake over and over but wonder if it takes away from aggressiveness??”

Answer is Yes, it not only takes away aggressiveness but the most important ‘Flow of the Game’. Coach yanks not from mistake over and over which I can understand but by just one mistake?

Bo was recently yelled in his ear as timeout were been called. They are just Freshmen and Sophomores, they are going make mistakes. Infact, that was other players on the courts fault for not coming out to help Bo. Which makes when Bo is open he hesitates to shoot the 3’s for fear of been yanked out. You can not play with fear and worrying.

Yelling to players should be left on the pratice court. Only yelling should be to the referees!!! And there are many missed calls by the Refs!

The players are playing cautiously and circumspectly to not make a mistakes.

Coach should let them play though their mistakes and not worried about been yanked out of the game. One minutes you’re in next minutes you’re out?

Coaches need to come together and get a better game plan…

Something happen after the Nevada game and that is Confidence of both Players and Coaches.

What I noticed was the body language of the players as they came off the court and you could tell they where dejected for getting pulled, the ones I noticed was #3,15 and 34 I don’t know their names, but you could tell they where beaten already(mentally).

  30. Kazz_DROID.X January 10, 2011 12:51 pm

Damned if you are and damned if you dont.

Gib was quickly pulling guys from the beginning of the season and when we were 5-0 no one really thought much of it, in fact some liked it.

Now with all these losses different story on the same topic.

    Me? I dunno…

  31. d1島 January 10, 2011 12:51 pm

  32. Stretch January 10, 2011 12:53 pm

Kazz – I am not into the pull a player when they make a mistake, I would rather they play aggressive. There are some things that they players need to play through and get over it. That’s a reason why Amis is allowed to keep playing even though he hasn’t been hitting his jump shots. You just hope it doesn’t last for more than the 2 past games.

  33. Pomai January 10, 2011 1:02 pm

Kazz like I said I’m not really sure about the in’s and out’s of basketball that why I asked. But it does seem to me that you need to let the kids play an make adjustments during the time outs and practices not during the game. Of course if a guy makes a major mistake I could see it. But I am not commending the coach one way or the other, just trying to learn the why’s.

  35. Buffoman January 10, 2011 1:16 pm

It takes time to create a culture. Some are able to do it, others are not. In my judgement, Coach Wooden was the best in that he coached the heck out of players during practice. During the game he hardly spoke. More recently one can see that in Coach K.

Coach Gib needs time to establish a culture. I do not see a problem with him yelling instructions during the game as no one really knows for sure what he has. I’m certain after this year and probably in his 3rd, he’d be a bit calmer as the “mistakes” would not be for a lack of knowledge but a simple error. I don’t believe that they are quite there just yet.

  36. Kazz January 10, 2011 1:21 pm

Something happened at halftime. The team ran out kind of late and then just didn’t show up. Something happened.

Both the men and the Wahine lost bad two nights prior and at least the Wahine came out and played with 2010 WAC Champs LaTech to the wire and almost pulled the upset with one second left in regulation.

I thought that the men would come out and compete as well, but half a game doesn’t do it.

The one positive out of Saturday is that a lot of men bball fans saw the exciting last 5 minutes of the Wahine game and got loud and vocal about it. I hope the Wahine got some new fans from it and they will expand their interest to the Wahine games as well.

  47. Okole Maluna January 10, 2011 2:10 pm

I’ve been to every men’s BB game and notice Coach Gib always on his feet yelling instruction during the game. I can appreciate the enthusiam but coach need to relax and let the kids play. Players a continuesly looking back to coach for intruction during the game. Johnson does this every time free throw is been made. He’s mind is on the coach and not in the game. It’s too late during the game… You need to do that during practice runs. By game time everyone should know their responsibility. Only offensive or defensive plays should be called and not for every possession.

By shuffling players in and out with in seconds, players are confused as to who’s covering whom? Few times I’ve seen all coaches yelling and pointing whom to cover and too late he’s open for the 3 point shot.

This will be a excellant juncture for an away game for the team to come together for the coaches, as well as the players to get their confidence back. At Utah State, UH had a chance to win without Aims. Maybe Aims need to come off the bench since he’s be away over a month. He has definitely lost his shooting touch.

I’m already booked for LV WAC Tournament in March… I hoping I’m not alone…

    Go Warriors.

The difference in the game was not this one particular instance and nether was Kamilah Jackson’s missed free throw.

It was other things along the way, little things here and there.

I for one appreciate the effort and overall poise they had for the ENTIRE game especially coming off a bad loss the night before.

Saturday was a tale of two different teams.

The one that played at 5pm refused to quit and the other at 7:30pm showed the opposite.

Xs and Os can be fixed over time, instilling effort and a willingness to compete is much harder to breed.

wbb will be good, but not this season. Coach D has laid the ground work, she needs athletic players and she has a nice group of freshmen this season to build upon-Jackson, Kuehu and Haydel. Next year’s class is very athletic, but like all HS players, their transition to D1 will determine the team’s early success.

#78 – as a matter of fact, no spinning; only hopin a certain OC would adpot some principles displayed.

play option-motion-or whatever you want to call it – its all about the principle of confusing your opponent and making ADJUSTMENTS at half to counter what the other team is doing to you.

if your principles and strategy remain the same, then you are doomed to lose! if the principle and strategy is good, but the players cannot execute, then it’s time to make changes – whatever they may be to change situations in your favor.

A House you are correct. Half time adjustments made by the other team neutralized our R n S because we didn’t mix it up in play call selections. And we needed to make better defensive adjustments at half time and during the game.

We needed to implement plays that would have kept the defense off balance or the opponent offense off balance. As our coaches gain more experience in play calling we will have better play selection. This season was the first for full autonomy for the OC and DC to call their own plays. They will learn from the experience.

  91. Ralph January 10, 2011 7:34 pm

Both teams played fast, especially the defenses. Two powerful offenses were minimized by great defenses.

  92. Dennis Halloran January 10, 2011 7:37 pm

I think both Auburn and Oregon are up there with TCU in the top tier in the nation

  93. d1島 January 10, 2011 7:41 pm

#12 – For those who don’t remember: One Timmy Chang’s better games. He comes in for an injured Jason Wieldon and lights up Aloha Stadium on his first play.

#40 – I had to think for a second before catching on. Good one.

  95. oldie January 10, 2011 7:58 pm

    #94 – One of Timmy

  96. Slugger January 10, 2011 8:12 pm

    tommui,

University of Phoenix gets advertising from the stadium that the Arizona Cardinals play in…

I have to go back to the recording to watch the game after the first quarter…. 🙁

  97. kev-1 January 10, 2011 8:15 pm

As much as I hate the BCS, they got it right this year. THose were the two best football teams in the nation. Sorry, but I don’t think TCU would have beaten either team. Then again, I thought Wisconsin was going to smash TCU. What do I know. I wish Oregon had won to help bring Cam Newton back down to earth, but props to Auburn.

  98. kev-1 January 10, 2011 8:16 pm

How bout that true freshman RB though? Beast!

  99. kev-1 January 10, 2011 8:17 pm

One of the commentators (was it musberger?) called the stadium the home of the Pheonix Cardinals. Old fart. No offense.

  101. kev-1 January 10, 2011 8:18 pm

  105. hawaiiansun January 10, 2011 8:33 pm

#99, Brent MusbUrger might be an old fart but Im sure he knows how to spell Phoenix.

    No offense.

  106. al January 10, 2011 8:36 pm

as the runner up in the bcs champ bowl, i thought that oregon did as much as it could to stay close with a very talented auburn team.

i was impressed with their ability to make plays when it counted.

unfortunately that one play where dyer rolled over the back of the defensive guy to gain what would be the game breaker was the only difference between the two schools.

dyer low center of gravity was the difference tonight.

cam newton is good but not all world.

i couldn’t help but thinking what it would have been like had miah masoli been the qb. oh well.

  107. al January 10, 2011 8:37 pm

and yes that was a very entertaining game to end this season.

  108. kev-1 January 10, 2011 8:52 pm

Peterson says “No, thank you” to Stanford – he’s a donkey! 🙄

Missed in the hype was the tackle by the Auburn db on the crazy reception and near TD in 3Q. The db didn’t give up and made the tackle inside the 5. The Ducks never pushed it over in 4 downs. Again, the mighty $$$ rules in the BCS. Too bad, so sad…. 😐

  110. al January 10, 2011 9:49 pm

re: # 119. Nah – time has passed him by.

In fact, he interviewed, 2 HC’s ago, by the then Stanford AD.

He never did say that he was offered – he said that he was

disappointed that Stanford did not have the money to pay higher asst salaries.

The guy who was hired, was then fired, and replaced by Harbaugh.

I think “at this point in time”, Norm Chow’s comfort zone should remain at OC.

    Morning, everyone!

Car still has an electrical short somewhere that’s draining the battery faster than normal.

Lost my wallet for the first time in my life, Sunday. Spent most of yesterday searching for it, then trying to find paperwork so I could get a replacement license.

Hoping your 2011 has started better than mine so far…

We’ve got a young basketball team who are still learning to play together in a new system on offense, transition, and defense. They’ll come together as the season progresses.

It’s called $$$$…for the naming rights for the stadium. The D’backs stadium was called BOB (Bank One Ballpark) during it’s inaugural years and now Chase (Bank) Field. The Coyotes home is jobbing.com. Our basketball building on campus is called Wells Fargo Arena…I’m sure ASU is receiving a lot more than pens and toasters from Wells Fargo bank. It’s all about the benjamin….

    MW . . .

I had a vehicle that had a mysterious short. I was finally able to solve the problem when I traded it in and purchased a new vehicle.

Really frustrating during the colder months when the battery dies, seemingly, over-night.

Demnach kann Ich euch eine Anmeldung mit guten Gewissen ans Herz legen. Könnt es ja mal testen Liebste Gruesse. Eure, Kathrin

  139. Kekoa January 11, 2011 5:37 am

MW ~ Not too long ago, I had a short in our 2d car. D-1 recommended a mechanic who specializes in electrical auto wiring. So instead of paying big bucks to a dealership to run it thru their $65 diagnostic computer, I take it to this guy’s shop.

Takes him about 10 minutes to find it, fix it, and then he sez, “$5 bucks should cover parts and labor!” I was stunned to come upon a mechanic who was not tied to the Schedule, and ruled by the cash register.

Ask around. I’ll bet you can find one.

  152. James January 11, 2011 8:28 am

The mens’ basketball team started this season on a high note. Everything clicked. Coach Gib looked like a genius. UH had an up tempo game and he made full use of his team by substituting freely. It did not not matter who were in the game. They all contributed.

On defense, it was pressure … pressure, pressure, pressure … full court pressure ….. half court pressure, whatever it took. Keep up the pressure and sooner or later the other team will yield to the pressure. I loved to watch the game the way Gib Arnold was coaching this team. Good basketball starts with good defense. His yelling on court is on defense which is okay in my opinion. He wants his players to be in the right position to defend their men.

On offense, the team could be down, but in a flurry of a few moments, out of nowhere, the Bows would rack up some points and take the lead. Bill Amis and Hiram Thompson were the “go to” guys in the early season games. Pure shooter Bo Barnes was the one opening up the games with long treys. Offense supposed to take care of itself. It is what they are doing in practice by going through the same motions. What it comes down to is execution and finally putting the ball in the basket. For some strange reason, in the WAC season, the ball is not going in the basket. The Bows are playing sloppy and they are not playing together full potential as a team. Too many times, I see players bringing the ball down the court singlehandedly and heading for the basket only to get swatted making forced shots. Hey guys, there are four other guys on the team. This is WAC basketball and not backyard basketball. On the other hand, there is pure shooter Bo Barnes on offense hardly touching the ball. It’s like the guys don’t want him to touch the ball to make his long treys. He is the Bows offensive weapon like Pat Lojesky. Set up some plays where he can take his long shots. He may miss some baskets, but it doesn’t matter, let him keep shooting and he is going to hit a streak and get some buckets for the team to catch up or open up a game.

The season is not over. Go Bo! I mean Bows!

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
