Away they go: Warriors head to Australia

The Warriors had a 30-minute, walk-through session this morning ahead of this afternoon’s scheduled departure to Australia.

The NCAA granted Sydney-raised Max Hendrie a waiver allowing him to travel with the team. He still is awaiting eligibility clearance to play this season.

Glad Max Hendrie could make the trip!

ST — when the plane lands in Sydney — it’s football on Saturday as usual.
I suggest you go on Australia time for the blogs–then you’ll only confuse most of us. 🙂
Hey, this is will be the greatest time difference you’ve ever blogged from!

Max was asked by some Australians whether he has phones or money (in Hawaii). At about 2:06 in the video.

  13. islandman August 20, 2016 2:43 pm

correction: teammates ask Max if you have phones and money in Oz.

  14. akuhead2 August 20, 2016 2:50 pm

#12, I think it was the other way around. Sounded like he was asked if Australians have phones and what kind of money do they use. They do have excellent Sim card plans.

  15. akuhead2 August 20, 2016 3:02 pm

Sim cards are $2 AUS/ per day
They have electronic visa’s at the airport, Very Easy, unless they really want to get their passports stamped. The fewer stamps the better sometimes.

  16. Inyoface August 20, 2016 3:53 pm

Maybe they wanted him to bring back some phones and money Lol

Safe travels to the team and enjoy Australia. Stay away from all dem critters down there. Play Warrior!

Saw Japan beat the U.S. In the 400 relay to take the silver in the Olympics. How can?

  20. jT August 20, 2016 5:00 pm

Why are they leaving so early?

  21. islandman August 20, 2016 5:36 pm

19… Not only that but the US team was disqualified for an early baton exchange so lost the bronze. The Japan team had one black runner.
” The U.S. quartet finished third in the final on Friday but soon afterward was disqualified because of a faulty baton exchange between leadoff runner Mike Rodgers and Justin Gatlin in which Rodgers passed it too early. Jamaica won, followed by Japan. Canada, which had finished fourth, was elevated to third following the U.S. disqualification. ” (LA Times)

  22. islandman August 20, 2016 5:48 pm

20… Cal leaving for Australia Saturday night.
” The Virgin Australia 777 plane (for Cal) will have about 70 empty seats to make sure that everyone has enough room to spread out and sleep. The linemen will be mostly in business class so they have more room. The players will wear compression pants on the flight and there will be hourly food and drink service to make sure that everyone is well-fed and well-hydrated.”

  23. A-House August 20, 2016 6:05 pm

glad Max could make the trip!! better still if he is cleared to play while at home!

    time’s ah getting short!

  24. A-House August 20, 2016 6:07 pm

#22: yea, but they get an extra 2,000 + miles than UH to be on the plane

dat begs dah question – why would any PAC 12 team want to play in Australia???

even worse if east of Pacific time zone

  25. Haleakala August 20, 2016 6:18 pm

The anchor for the Japan team had a father that came from Jamaica. His mother was from Japan and he grew up in Japan. The Jamaicans have many speedy runners for a such small nation. Pretty amazing.

The Warriors have a slight disadvantage in time zone difference -20 hours versus -17 hours for Cal. But it shouldn’t make a difference. They will still do good!!!

  26. 808warriorfan August 20, 2016 6:36 pm

Time for all to come together as 1 and support the team …

The team will do their part to play as 1 …

Saw Dave Matlin at the Airport this morning; one of the
last ones in line w/ the group. Managed to say hello and
thanked him for hiring “Rolo” … he’s really excited about
the future of UH Football w/ “Rolo” as HC …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

    Tebow numbers for Max Wittek.

At least he got his shot.

  28. Committed Road Warrior August 20, 2016 8:17 pm

“The Virgin Australia 777 plane (for Cal) will have about 70 empty seats to make sure that everyone has enough room to spread out and sleep.”

Cal gets to fly down under on a chartered Virgin Australia 777. Meanwhile UH is flying down in coach on a commercial Hawaiian Airlines flight. Given there are just shy of 200 people in the official UH travel party, I have no idea whether or not flying the team commercial is being done as a money-saving tact by UH (did the promoters not want to offset costs for a charter flight) or something else at play.

  29. Old School Dave August 20, 2016 9:04 pm

Thanks. Interesting background of the Japan 400 relay anchor, Aska Cambridge. He had no idea about S & C training at first. Sports training methods seem to be getting better in Japan. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2016/06/04/more-sports/track-field/cambridge-dreaming-big-future/#.V7krQYppbCQ

  30. jT August 20, 2016 10:25 pm

Did Senator Kahele pilot the flight to Australia?

  31. A-House August 21, 2016 5:49 am

    Haleakala:

so California is 3 hours closer to Australia if you go “east”? boy, my brain is really slow at this time of the hour.

  32. A-House August 21, 2016 5:50 am

    8o8warrior fan:

you were on the same plane as the team?

  33. A-House August 21, 2016 5:54 am

    Committed Road Warrior:

    howzit!!! long time no see!

hope all is well with you and family!

next year at UMass – will see you there? tour guide tells me the hotel is right on campus – hot dog!

  34. Inyoface August 21, 2016 7:27 am

I wonder why Hawaii is always considered the visitor team on neutral sites. We have way more in common with Australia than Cal does.

  35. kahuna August 21, 2016 7:43 am

Are you sure we are further from Australia than California? I heard someone(don’t remember if it was a coach or talk show host) mention how we should use Australia as a pipeline for recruits since its a “shorter travel”.

Might have heard wrong or in wrong context but it made me think we closer.

  36. BH August 21, 2016 8:24 am

I could be wrong, but the way I understand it, is that Hawaii is physically closer to Australia than California if traveling from east to west.

That said, because going that direction crosses the international date line, whereby it is 1 day ahead, Hawaii is calculated as further away in hours because because it is the following day already.

  37. tom August 21, 2016 8:46 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
kahuna #35 = flight time from LA to Sydney is almost 15 hours; flight time from Honolulu to Sydney is about 10+ hours.
