Add Colt Brennan to the growing list of Warrior-tied football players training in Arizona. The weather, easy travel access and numerous training facilities make Arizona an attractive workout area.
Brennan, who has successfully recovered from three surgeries in the past 18 months, said he finally is healthy for the first time since September 2007.
Brennan said he will continue training in Arizona for two months, then participate in the Washington Redskins’ two-month training program.
He said he now weighs 216.

University of Hawai‘i Athletics Director Jim Donovan announced the addition of Western Kentucky, which is now Division I-A, to almost complete the 2012 football schedule. The Warriors and Hilltoppers will close out the regular season with a game on Dec. 1, 2012 at Aloha Stadium.
With the addition of Western Kentucky, the Warriors need one more opponent to complete the 2012 schedule. UH has already filled the upcoming 2010 schedule as well as 2011.
“We’re pleased that Western Kentucky has filled one of the open slots for the 2012 schedule,” Donovan said. “I’m sure their coaches, players and fans are very excited for the opportunity to play an FBS opponent on the road to finish the regular season. Having already completed the 2010 and ’11 schedules and needing one more game for ’12 and ’13, we’re meeting one of our goals to have the football schedule complete several years out.”
Hawai‘i and Western Kentucky will play for the first time on the football field.
The 2012 schedule includes road games at USC (Sept. 1) and Brigham Young (Sept. 8) to open the season and a home game against UNLV (Sept. 22).
Since last year, UH has announced new games with Army, Brigham Young (2012 & 2013), and UC Davis and extended series with USC, Oregon State, Washington, and UNLV.
Colt in Arizona? He could stay there and beat out Leinart.

Recruiting is nasty business. Consider the BYU recruiting coach who told a young Hawaii recruit’s dad. “if your son goes thru with his visit to Notre Dame, his offer comes off the table!” The coach then purportedly went on to demean local kids in general, saying they cannot meet the academic rigors of ND.
The Hawaii recruit & father are enroute to ND & UW as I post this, which shows they could not be intimidated by BYU arrogance. This sad situation is gold for UH, who will benefit from BYU’s impending loss of recruiting goodwill in Hawaii & connected Polynesian families. All local families are connected…quietly word spreads from parent to parent, from recruit to their up and coming cousins. Aloha BYU. Tofa soifua Cougars.

A quick followup to yesterday’s Aloha Stadium update. There are a lot of major projects going on and replacing the turf is towards the end. Although no one used this metaphor in explaining why the replacement won’t begin until late spring 2011, I suspect that it’s like doing a major remodeling project in your own house. You do the carpentry and the electrical stuff and the painting BEFORE you put down new carpeting.
The NFL knows that the current turf will still be in place in 2011.
As reported earlier, over $64 MILLION through issuing bonds has been allocated by the Legilsature; however, I’m still tracking down how much was sold on the bond market and how quickly the funding has been or will be released. Capital projects are paid by issuing long-term bonds, not out of tax revenues, so there’s no argument about teacher furloughs, etc., which could be used as a justification for not issuing the bonds.
Instead, if I were a state administrator, I’d definitely market these projects as stimulus packages helping to get unemployed construction workers back to work.
Before I forget – does someone want a set of our basketball tickets on February 6 and February 20? It’s a two-4-the-price-of-1 deal – women’s basketball followed by men’s basketball. Since we have season tickets for both sports, if you want one set, let me know. E-mail address is swood at hoku dot com. Be sure to include a daytime or cell phone number.
There are also conflicts with baseball and basketball or volleyball coming up in February and with baseball & volleyball in March as well. Obviously, we can only attend one event so if you’d like to use one or the other set of tickets, please let me know.

A lot of talk especially by espn pundits that they see qb Tebow as the 5th/6th best qb out of six qb’s at the senior bowl, mock draft. Questions Tebow being qualified as a starter, and maybe more suited as a slot, etc.

No other school willing, then how come we still get one more spot to fill on the schedule? No make sense filling our schedule with a lesser opponent. How can you gain respect playing Western Kentucky at the end of the season??? How is that going to help us? What, a so called easy win to play in the Hawaii Bowl in case we need that 7th win to make it, ah c’mon. Besides looking at our track record with these lesser schools, that ain’t a guaranteed win, which makes it even worse…sad.

I’m not sure how to respond to this statement other than to say due to travel costs and the NCAA allowing a twelve game schedule UH finds itself in a situation with few teams willing to come here. If you think this is bad, if we lose Boise State and Fresno State to the MWC we will really be in a pinch.

When you look for a team to end the season at Aloha Stadium, you have to cross out ALL of the teams that play conference championship games. That means that well over half of the teams are out of the question. The Pac-10 and other conferences are also trying to go to a schedule of having all nonconference games in September, to give maximum flexibility for conference scheduling. That means that UH plays a team like USC at the beginning of the season or not at all.
You also have to consider that most D-IA teams with competent ADs do their scheduling years in advance. For example, Navy and Army are scheduling games for 2020 and 2021! HF failed to fill the holes, so JD is doing the best he can to play catch-up.
If Western Kentucky was scheduled earlier in the season (read: after the USC/BYU roadtrip), I wouldn’t think much of it. But scheduling a Sun Belt bottom-feeder to round off the season is almost like how some schools schedule a I-AA (FCS) team for Senior Day.
What will really start to irk people is if the fifth and final non-conference spot for 2012 is occupied by a true 1-AA team. That”s gonna be a rather weak home schedule if that comes to fruition.

Why do all athletes always say they are in the “best shape of their lives” or “100% injury free”, when we usually learn about something later on.
Here are some statements about the UH-WKU game from WKU’s perspective.
Article about the Nike combine being held this weekend in Hawaii. I didn’t realize that there would be a prominent recruit named Walter Santiago–I knew his Dad back when I taught sports & games in summer fun at Hauula and Walter Sr.’s Mom was my boss.
So, I’m guessing the 2012 schedule will look like this:
Road: USC, BYU, BSU, Fresno State, Utah State, NMSU
Home: UNLV, Western Kentucky, D-IAA, SJSU, La Tech, Idaho, Nevada
That home schedule will not be very compelling and USC/BYU/BSU is a really tough group of road games. Hopefully UH will be a deep and tough team then, because I could see UH sweeping those home games which will hopefully bring out the crowds despite the perceived quality of the opponents.

Thanks to JD for scheduling WK in 2012. Yes, a higher profile team may have been better. Or, what is worse, no team to play…been there.
At first, I also went “Who dat?” But then I read what the coach of WK said and recognized the Warrior football program for what it has achieved and seemed happy for the opportunity to play here (we should hire this guy to head the HVB). If the players reflect the personality of the coach, we are going to have a great game.
I also hope that WK will bring a host of fans to the game and spend some money, too. Given the economy the way it is, we should welcome anyone that has not visited here, and give them any reason to come. They may end up forming friendships with the the locals, too.

Don’t remember what year the Hawaii-Grambling game was played.
Jeris White was drafted in 1974.
Stringert was signed in 1975 – don’t remember if he was drafted.
So depending on what year the game was played, yes, they could have been team mates in that game.

I think Shanahan is a way better coach then Zorn and smarter. He’s more run oriented/play action kind of guy but Elway, Plummer, and Cutler flourished under him. I think he could do Colt some good as long as Campbell is out of the question. Plus when he was OC for the 49ers, Steve Young flourished as well. If not hope Colt goes to the Dolphins and reunites with 50% of the dreadheads.

The news story stated that Epenesa got a late offer from UH. I am trying to figure out why we would be “late” in extending an offer to a local kid who is good enough to get offers from UCLA, Washington, Oregon State, Colorado, and Texas Tech. Sounds pretty inexcusable to me.

if my memory is still functioning another person on that team that played grambling in the old stadium was golden richards. he played one play and broke his leg on the opening kickoff. he was supposed to be the equalizer but as we know warriors took it in the short that day. like ahouse said the band did put on a good show at half time.
another note of interest on the grabling vs uh that day was the one haole boy that was on the team. he got to play in the second half.
I think it was yesterday someone mentioned that recruits going away say they were ignored or offered late. Yet, Mr. Tsai says different. Hmmmm.
Might be a way for them to save face and make someone else the bad guy. Seems to be the trend with a lot of the teens — blame someone or something else.
They are not the bad guys. It is tough to make a life long and life altering decision at 17 or 18. Especially when family, friends, and perception come into play.

I went to the Tiger/Bows game. Heck, I even went to the Tiger Band show the next day! What a clinic. They explained their philosophy and mechanics clearly.

I agree with what you say about the likelyhood of Shanahan tweaking the offense. My only concern is with the O-line. Those guys couldn’t stop a riotous group of campfire girls! Colt can’t afford anymore down time due to injuries.
I too would love to see him get together with his fave receivers at Miami. BTW, I wish Jason Rivers could try again.
I went to the Grambling St game. I think it was their oline that was huge. It was bigger than a lot of the NFL teams at that time. Their band was awesome. One of the best I have seen.

Teams like Western Kentucky are a safety net for the coach and AD, it is easier to qualify for the Hawaii Bowl having to beat W.K. than a team like Wisconsin on the last day of the regular season. JD is hedging his bet to improve UH chances of making it to the Hawaii Bowl, same reason he was willing to play Central Arkansas for a winnable game and he wants to continue scheduling at least one D1 AA team each season. He is looking at his balance sheet and its in red for the UHAD-6 million plus. The 2012 home schedule for fb sucks, especially when he asked for a higher maximum for ticket prices that can be introduced later, where is the value.
Grambling Band:
We were seated about the 40 yd line on the Makai sideline. Suddenly, you could hear the drums under the bleachers and out of the Diamond Head makai entry they made their famous entry – their famous movements moving side to side, down and up until the entire band was on the field. Precision plus!!!
Then, it was all showmanship and a show many of us cannot forget.

Before you complain about the 2012 nonconference home schedule, maybe UH plans to increase ticket prices in 2011 or 2013. Both years have a *very* good home schedule for UH fans.

We actually *do* know which WAC teams will come to Aloha Stadium in 2012…see my post #53. The 2012 home schedule isn’t that compelling for UH fans…but 2013 might be the best home schedule UH ever has. Since teams are going to home-and-home deals, I seriously doubt that we’ll ever again see a season where all of UH’s nonconference games are at home.
The CB that Al was hoping for (Acker) was going to choose Idaho…but JJ came to him with a late scholarship offer and he just committed to SMU. His final 2 was Idaho and SMU, so at least JJ took him away from Idaho instead of UH.
So, it appears that VJ Feheko is on a recruiting trip to UH this weekend. The eyewitness from WSN said that VJ, Allen Sampson and Lawrence Lagafuaina seemed like they were getting the most attention from UH coaches. He said that those three recruits were put in the same car…Inoke took the first batch of recruits away to wherever their next stop was.
Other recruits this weekend: Corey Lau, Marcus Umu, and a couple of other recruits he couldn’t identify.
He mentioned that Inoke was very involved with the recruiting of Lagafuaina and Gordy Shaw was talking with Sampson’s Mom.

is it plausible that JD raises prices one year, 2011, lowers the next in 2012 because of the schedule, then raises it even higher because of the brand names coming to Aloha Stadium. Once it goes up, rarely will it come down, especially since the premium seats and ticket prices were introduced by HF and adjustments have already been made.

That C_C was terrific! Most food I’ve eaten in a long time, specially since I been tryin’ not eat so much.
I was honored to sit on the same table as Da Beast and the Hon. Rev. Joe Onosai. Excellent conversation with those guys and no one stealing each other’s food. (Not that I would have grumbled at Joe or Da Beast if they wanted my food. 😆 )
The cupcakes which Monsignor Kekoa mentioned were truly awesome. Nice crowd, great to see so many friends again. 🙂

RE: Grambling
I always knew that we had played Grambling State when the Great Eddie Robinson was Coach. What I did not know was that they brought their band along! What an experience that must have been.
I’ve always been on multiple boards advocating for UH to schedule games with the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). I would have much rather seen more teams like Grambling, Southern, Florida A&M (FamU), and even the suddenly resurgent Prairie View A&M. These teams always field a good squad and once got all the top athletes when racist practices kept them from going to some of the more “storied” programs in the BCS. Today, they still play at a high level and come with some great traditions……including those GREAT bands and dancers. One of my Fraternity bro’s who went to Jackson State University in Jackson, MS told me that people wouldn’t go to the game to watch the game…..they went to watch the band!
I think the UH band can rock it too……but only when they are in the stands. Kinda boring when they on the field at halftime. They need to youtube some clips from the HBCU’s and start droppin’ it like it’s HOT!

Saw at least six Tsai-kos at the volleyball match earlier this evening sitting across from us.
Tonight’s match was the best one so far this season – UH and UC-Irvine had to fight it out big time, but DaBoyz finally pulled it off in Set Five.

Friday night Ryan was speaking to about 50 10th graders from St. Louis who were on a 3 day retreat for school…..and the question asked, ‘why did you leave a full scholarship at Weber?’ the answer was plain and simple, “I want to be a Warrior, I want to represent my family, Saint Louis, this state and wear the Green & Black. This is my home and I am grateful to be able to participate in Spring Ball….. Going away was a good experience, I had to grow up real fast and that was good. But now it’s time to help the Warriors win games”
someone said once, money can’t buy you happiness, but it’ll rent some joy for awhile, haha

Regarding Ferd’s column today, if the rumors come true and the BCS requires that all AQ conferences are required to have a conference championship game, then *no* AQ team will be available to end the season in Hawaii.
When the conference shuffling goes on in 2 years or so, UH will have stop having the late nonconference games anyway if it is in a conference with a championship game.

Typically, the Pro Bowl is held after the Super Bowl has ended, and it is usually in Hawaii. Just imagine, you’ve just finished playing a grueling 16-plus game season and you are rewarded a selection as one of the best players in the league. Now you can go to Hawaii, bring your family, soak in your favorite sport in a relaxed atmosphere. Sounds nice. I can see Peyton Manning and Drew Brees laughing about their recent Super Bowl game while taking in the surf.
Too bad that won’t happen.
The NFL, for apparently revenue-related reasons, has moved the Pro Bowl from its traditional home in Hawaii to the comparatively mundane Miami – a place players go regularly. No fun. Not only that, they moved it from the week after the Super Bowl to the week before. This means that the best two quarterbacks from the NFC (Drew Brees for the New Orleans Saints and Peyton Manning from the Indianapolis Colts, who will meet in the Super Bowl in Miami on Feb 7th) will, instead of playing, be watching the Pro Bowl from the sidelines.

I make it a habit to look at the “temps” from cities we have visited on trips and truly amazed that the temp in the Seattle area is very constant with only 5 – 9 degree difference. Most places will have a 17 – 28 degree change from high to low.
also missed out on yesterday’s cattle call due to a previously arranged business meeting.

speaking of OL, I did not realize the number of OL that were “hidden” and soon to be walk-ons for Spring or Fall practice – no wonder Coach Mack and staff concentrated so much on the defensive side.
Opinion: if a local student athlete really wanted to stay home and play before family and friends and Tsaikos, when an offer is made should not have any bearing on accepting.

you know when you do a CC you have a lot of long lasting memories……that’s a given….but being the doting daddy, i didn’t eat yesterday, and i could stand to lose a meal or two or three, ok that’s enough.
but i was wondering, if i still smelled like a korean bbq this morning, and we were there for less than 1 1/2 hours….how does the staff handle that……just a crazy thought, but i had to really wash my nostrils out to get the smell out, and even my shiny head had residue, haha
just a thought…………but it was just good to see everyone on a happier note 🙂

Had a nice time at the cc. Great fuud & greater company. It’s always interesting to match more faces to the names on the blog. Started off the day with a ‘senior’ moment; at the wrong Camellia at noontime. I was at the wrong place at the right time.
I was just talking with my friend about this yesterday at Outback steak house. Don’t know how we got on the subject actually , they brought it up. I do remember eating a amazing steak salad with cranberries on it. I digress…
