Avis has selected HiFlyer as the winner of six baseball tickets to Saturday’s game between Oregon and UH.

Thanks for playing.

What does this mean? Not sure. I was at UH and missed the meeting.

From what I was told, everything will be status quo for the next six weeks. After that, maybe I’ll have a job in journalism, maybe I’ll be happy to super-size your next meal.

We’ll figure out a way to keep this going for as long as possible, even if means I have to do it between making fries.

Keep you posted.  Meanwhile, may I have your empty soda cans?

Craig Sutzmann, a former UH receiver and graduate assistant coach, said  he has accepted a position with the Memphis football program. He will learn his specific role when he reports tomorrow morning.

Stutzmann received the offer through Memphis offensive coordinator Eric Price, son of UTEP coach Mike Price. Eric Price was an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Price and Stutzmann got to know each other better when both were speakers at Jason Gesser’s football clinic last year. Gesser and Stutzmann were Saint Louis School teammates.

Most recently, Stutzmann was an assistant coach at Portland State.

By the way, Ron Lee, who competed in today’s charity walk, said he and his brother, Cal Lee, are not leaving UH:

Not only has UH closed its men’s basketball practices this week, it has limited interview periods. The coaching staff and players were available for interviews yesterday, and they will be available after tonight’s game, but tomorrow will be a dead period.

Sure, the Rainbows face a crucial must-play-well period. But I’m sure there could be a compromise that would allow the players to focus on games while maintaining an open dialogue with the public.

While waiting to use the SSC for today’s shoot-around, Utah State players ran drills on the UH athletic complex concourse:

Tickets sales are going well for Saturday’s volleyball match on Maui.

The 500 tickets sent to Maui have been sold. In addition, another 1,000 tickets were purchased through the UH Box Office.

The seating chart shows that War Memorial Gym can hold up to 2,996 fans, although a Maui County Web site lists the seating capacity at 2,500. UH is capping sales at 2,500, although some have questioned whether the gym can comfortably fit that many. In any scenario, the Warriors should have loud support.

I learn something new every day. Not because I’m intelligent or curious. It’s because I’m forgetful.

Today I learned that the turnstile count at SSC events only includes those entering with tickets, which are scanned. In the past, especially at Aloha Stadium, everybody counted — the band, the national anthem singer, the youth soccer team working the garlic fries stand, the dorks on press row. All of them enter through the pass gate.

Happy birthday to Florida Ted and Joon Hartman.

    Hey, Bulla:
From what I’ve been told, only “eligible” players will be allowed to go to Kauai.
I’m not fully certain, but I think that would mean players who have to sit out after transferring would not be included on the travel roster to Kauai.

  13. protector February 25, 2010 6:19 am

Wow Bulla. You ran the table, baby! Impressive.

To Tsaikos everywhere, have a nice day!

    The clock is off.
I know a lot of bloggers can automatically set the release time of their blogs (sometimes days in advance), but I like to go live. But because the clock is off, sometimes I’ll post at 12:10 a.m. and it will show up as 11:58 the previous night. So I’ll have to reset the post time.

  18. Stephen Tsai February 25, 2010 6:24 am

    Protector:
I believe it to be so, from what I was told.
I think practices are OK. But when a team practices that far away from campus, there are travel restrictions.
But on the plus side, Oahu fans can be treated to The Beast’s private workout that day.

  19. Stephen Tsai February 25, 2010 6:24 am

Last year, I believe, Liko Satele paid his own way to Maui.

that’s what Ryan said about the trip, that if they wanted to go, they’d have to pay their own way…….so he said, ‘ah dad, that’s alright, no need’.

IS HE NUTS???? If we can fly all the way to Richmond VA to watch him play in 38 degree weather, i think we can all fly over to Kauai…..haha. but we shall see, where’s the Super Ferry when we need one, and i don’t mean the ones on Kuhio and Seaside.

No forget to watch PBS Hawaii’s special on Pidgin tonite. As we all know, pidgin is a reflection of Hawaii — no matter what side of the aisle you sit on. Although I have succumbed to the language of the dominant culture, I still consider Big Island Ka’u Pidgin to be my native tongue….and the language of my soul.

I wen learn to maximize my giff of gab wen I wen go college mainland. I neva loose the pidgin tho. I only wen learn how fo turn da bugg off when I need to. Das about it. an I wen learn dat get plenty pidgins all ova the world. NOt only us get pidgin.

Austin Hansen wanted to push me in the pool.
So he says: May I see your new phone?
I give him the new phone.
Then he says: May I see your camera.
So I give him the camera.
Then he starts to slowly push me back.
And being that I was born two days ago instead of yesterday, I say: You know I’ve got another phone.
And he decided that it was too much trouble to push in Professor Gadget.
But he said he hoped I appreciated that he didn’t want to get my electrical equipment wet. I told him I did, and that I was actually carrying two tape recorders, too. (Always need a backup tape recorder.)

You see, it is with the command of the English vernacular that we are able to pontificate with others regarding the essence of communication, be it verbal or non-verbal. Many times, in these discussions with the upper echelon of our esteemed educators, they would rather endorse separation than say amalgamation, assimilation, accommodation. We as a society need to embrace the differences of others to forge a homogeneous partnership that will fully develop the potential of our children.

  45. postmanke February 25, 2010 7:46 am

Really? What more do we need to know about the men’s basketball team? The last place they want to be in is in the public’s eye right now and people asking them “why are are you struggling” “how can you turn it around” “wonder if we can sense their intensity level at practice” Please, they are in last place, the team is stressed, is in a bit of crisis and they have school work to worry about. lately they have not been media darlings. The coach know’s this, is worried and is doing the right thing, he has the right to close practices, grant him that right. He should have done this from week 1. I say leave them alone, let them figure it out. even if players don’t agree with the coach or have a dislike for his coaching philosophy, athletes tend to respond when a coach lays down the law in an authoritarian manner. – the coachable ones anyway – but they do respond.

Hey, if it looks like their struggling, smells like their struggling, plays like their struggling, guess what? What’s more to ask? We all know where this is heading.. limited interviews is plenty. other sports need covering. give em time, let them respond to the coach, not the public and they’ll give you a story..

It’s bad enough in here that when theres controversy or when things go south posters can post with impunity. most of us have no creditability to damage, but you know the coaches are shaking their heads thinking somehow we need to shut the doors.

having said that basketball gets a pass as being the red headed step child. Football on the other hand… =)

Awesome game last night, sans BSU’s near comeback, but I guess that makes it better and all the more sweeter.

Big “UPS” to “Grandma D” (Dita) for giving us all she had at her time at UH. As a fan and as a resident of Hawaii, the stories of people that are from outside Hawaii, in this case, outside the US, and acclimating to the lifestyle and the “Aloha” we have to offer is always a BIG plus and very satisfying for us as well as the student athlete.

In that, it was very rewarding for Wahine fans to see her get leave the Stan Sheriff Center away as a winner on and off the court.

I think we’re pretty much a LOCK for the WAC tourney, UNLESS SJSU can beat Fresno State at Fresno and NMSU at Las Cruces… Yeah… no way in hell!!!

So apparently history is AGAINST Na Wahine softball in this year’s Cathedral City Classic with OSU, AZ, and UC Davis dominating the Rainbows in their current respective all times series.

AINOKEA. Today is Thursday, February 25, 2010

First pitch comes in about 10 minutes (8:30am HST) against OSU.

Oklahoma St doesn’t have the pitching stats and I’ve never seen them play but they got some girls hitting pretty well. Bats for our ladies have been too hot to worry about right now, so pitching gotta start off on FIRE!!!

Ricketts started and finished two days ago with a win over LMU. The pattern shows Ricketts would start in 8 minutes, but my guess is Parnaby opens.

rob32 vs c_c: no golf. arm wrestle at tiffany’s. sorry, c_c you lose this one.

    Aloha, Tsaiko ohana

Agree with Kazz about the wbb game last night. Tremenduous exclamation point ending for the last home game in Coach Dana’s first season. And what a sharp contrast to the way Coach Nash’s team has been playing.

The first half in particular showed everybody contributing, unselfish play with the assist level at half above the game average for the season, strong fundamental play by each player when they received the ball and made a ball fake to set up their opponent, and main thing — ohana spirit. I think Hawaii fans will support our teams if they play like that, win or lose. That is who we are here — work hard, stay humble, play smart, look for the new thing that works, keep trying to get better.

I see great things for the Wahine as they go forward to the tournament and the next season.

And back to lurking. Esme woosh!

    ST:

on travel to Kauai – I would not be a popular coach as I would leave behind all who are injured and cannot practice and those who are not eligible to pay in 2010 – that’s the break of the cycle and consequence if some chooses the mainland first (if offered by UH).

also, do not understand why teams brings all the “llaking wounded” on trips – just increases the expenses ( air, hotel, fuud)!

Pidgin English – had a prof at UH who said that if Hawaii had millions of residents, pidgen would be considered a “dialic” of standard American speech – he also said, “never be ashamed” of speaking pidgen – it’s knowing when to use it that makes the difference.

  80. Garret February 25, 2010 9:53 am

ESPN Q&A with Karl Benson. I do *not* like that when he’s asked about BSU leaving the WAC to go to the MWC, Benson talks about how it is natural for “upward mobility”. Does that imply that *Benson* thinks that BSU would upgrade itself by going to the MWC?

Obviously, there are a lot of questions surrounding Boise State and what it’s going to do. How do you prepare for something like that and do you have to have pieces in place that can move if Boise State decides to leave?

KB: There’s a limited number of current FBS schools within the WAC footprint, but history has always shown that there’s upward mobility in the West. Whether it was the Big West schools joining the WAC or the Big Sky schools joining the Big West that ultimately joined the WAC. All you have to do is look at the current WAC membership and see where they’ve been. History shows that there’s movement in the West. Outside of the Pac-10, there’s certainly been changes in the Western landscape and any Pac-10 movement will certainly affect both the WAC and Mountain West.

  81. Garret February 25, 2010 9:54 am

Benson said that BSU has been open and honest about their long-term desires…no surprise since they basically have a press conference once a year where BSU’s President says that they want to go to the MWC.

How much have you been in contact with Boise State in terms of what its future plans are regarding the Mountain West, the Pac-10 or any other possible suitors?

KB: Boise State administration has been very honest and forthcoming with their long-term desires. My job is then to provide all of our members with the best possible resources when it comes to television and bowls and postseason opportunities in all sports. And Boise State is certainly benefited from their membership in the WAC since 2000. The WAC has obviously benefited from Boise State. But I would hope that if and when an invitation comes that there would be an evaluation made that’s in the best interest of the university, and there would be recognition that the WAC has provided Boise State very well.

  82. Garret February 25, 2010 9:56 am

This part I agree with–the bottom and middle of the WAC needs to upgrade their programs to earn the WAC some respect.

I’ve said several times that while we’ve had success at the top with three BCS appearances, and we could have very easily had a fourth in four years, we need to get stronger both in the middle and in the bottom half of the league. I think that we’ve seen improvement in Idaho and Utah State and New Mexico State. We need to see the traditional WAC — Fresno State, Hawaii — programs deliver. We’ve seen Nevada and San Jose State have success. I think the bottom line is that we need more top 50 teams from top to bottom and we need to eliminate the teams that are in the 90 to 120 range. The Mountain West has certainly had two great seasons of three teams in the top 15 and that that has allowed them to separate themselves at this juncture. Note that Benson is saying that MWC has separated itself from the WAC…so he just told ESPN that the MWCis above the WAC right now. Even if he thought that, he shouldn’t say that to ESPN…

  85. Garret February 25, 2010 10:00 am

Part of the job of a conference commissioner is to boost the conference they represent and spread good PR. By clearly telling ESPN that the MWC is above the WAC and that BSU wanting to go to the MWC is natural “upward mobility”, Benson is a failure at being a homer for the WAC.

As a former old player to Hawaii from the “GOLDEN ERA” of the 70’s and 80’s all I can say until Hawaii Coaches and Administrators allow former mainland players MORE involvement and acknowledgement of their time to their specific sport then what you see in Hawaii athletics will continue of poor play, losing records and mediocrity players.

This poor treatment is pathetic as I have connected to a lot of former athletes here on the mainland and their ONE main complaint is that Hawaii don’t care about their lives after years of sweating on the grid iron or bouncing the leather ball or swinging the aluminum bat. No return of phone calls or interest in their lives after the Hawaii lights and fan adulation are gone and forgotten.

With the “ENORMOUS” resources that MANY of us former Bows have with sponsor connections, high school athletes and coaches, business constituents and professional sports franchises Hawaii would be in “seven heaven” if they treat their former players like “SONS” instead of step children.

This continue disconnected line is a disgrace and embarresment as the only thing the University or Hawaii athletics will acknowledge you for if they connect to you is “MONEY” ! as many of my former Bows can do more then that but the no care attitude and no regard of their playing days leave you with NO former players involvement as I have tried with all my heart to help and all I get is a door close in my face and label as a booster / violation “PLEASE” !

The BIG schools former athletes are heavily involve with their former teams program and NEW coaches of that team reach out to them and welcome them with open arms as they are Introduce to the new players as that quality time alone makes them feel self worth and “HONORED” of the new players that will continue the tradition of hard work and outstanding play !

So Tsaiko Nation that is what’s happening from the past players as I live it and see it being far away here in Los Angeles as I give them pictures of their playing days as trying to get it from the Athletic Department or SID is a lost cause !

Got to go pick-up my Wooten kids as any comments to my claim I will entertain later. ALOHA !

    Hawaii Warriors
    Spring practice starts: April 1
    Spring game: April 30

    What to watch:

    • The offensive line was a question heading into the 2009 season and will be again in 2010. The Warriors lose four senior starters, including center John Estes. Backups Kainoa LaCount, Matagisila Lefiti, Andrew Faaumu, Bronson Tiwanak, Clayton Laurel and Adrian Thomas will be among those competing for starting roles.

    • Bryan Moniz finished the season as the starting quarterback and will go into spring ball as the leading candidate to start in 2010, but Shane Austin, who played some in 2009, will challenge for the starting role this spring. Moniz finished the season completing 57 percent of his passes for 2,396 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

    • The Hawaii defense struggled some last year, but should be better with the return of star linebacker Brashton Satele. The Warriors will be looking for a new right tackle as well as a couple of starting linebackers, but the defense, which improved as the season progressed, should be a pleasant surprise in 2010.

  109. Pomai February 25, 2010 11:59 am

Benson needs to the same route as the fumbler. He is the worst commissioner the WAC has ever had, he only looks out for Boise an it show every time he opens his mouth. UH should lead the way to get rid of him.

  110. A-House February 25, 2010 12:00 pm

    Rainbow Cliff:

Based on your post #107, do you know how many support UH teams when they travel to play on the mainland?

Perhaps your concern, as a start point, can be addressed directly to Don Weir who is now the person at NaKoa (football only).

There is also a Letter Winners Club that seeks out former players and I believe that you are well acquainted with this group.

I do not believe that basketball or volleyball or baseball has an active, if any, group dedicated to supporting their sport and trying to secure membership/information or keeping in contact with “former” players.

  111. A-House February 25, 2010 12:04 pm

    Wahine Basetball:

Just to add a few notes to Kazz and Slugger.

Very happy to see them get the win, but it was ugly especially in the 2nd half where they led by 15 points only to see it disappear at the 9:14 minute mark. Seemingly, very little enthusiam, hustle ( lots of standing around), lousy concentration, lousy ball handling, etc. all contributed to their downward spiral in the last 15 minutes of play.

If Kisha K is the point guard, she holds onto the ball much too long – pehaps this observation is not totally correct as team mates maybe partially to blame for not moving and following the scheme of play.

However, as pointed out by Kazz and Slugger, it’s still a pleasure to watch the Wahine play compared to the men – even when there are times during the game when it can become very frustrating as players throw the ball away, make lousy passes, try behind the back passes in a very crowded/tight area which almost always backfires, stand around while other team goes after rebounds or just stand around while opponent “jumps” for the ball, etc. or knowing that your teammates on the bench are counting down the clock, shot is missed, and UH gets the ball and player holds the ball looking for an open teammate rather than taking a shot to keep the 30-second clock from running out.

Most of the players return for 2010, with an addition or 2, making it much easier for Coach Dana and her staff to prepare for the season. However, she will have 5 seniors and this will allow her greater flexibility in recruiting for 2011.

Wahine BB and men’s VB are the 2 most exciting to watch today! Of course, only my opinion.

“WAC or giving it a boost to the media” – there’s little bit of an oxymoron in there? WAC – media boost?

uhh, note to self.. the networks / media around the country could care less about the WAC. I would wonder how one would even begin to sell / boost media attention to a conference with such little media value.

I dont know what Benson is all about but I would say hey, WAC school, you want respect from the networks and media go play a schedule like other major conferences play week in week out, then I can back you up. Give me something to stand on cause right now the networks are viewing ya all as Johnny-come-latelyies. Gimme something to stand on..

I dunno, just trying to figure out how tough a job is to promote / boost a conference like a WAC to media and networks…

    A-House,

With the lack of another TRUE guard playing last night (Galdones suspended for 7 days, Ayabe and Kuehu hurt) it really effected us with our offense. Filling in, as we saw, as originally Allie Patterson in that spot, well, that’s what the broadcast claimed when I watched the replay even though during the live game Chawan pointed out that it was Bungaite.

65% of the time, from what I recall, our half court offense wasn’t as “deliberate” (i.e. slow) as it was last night, in fact I have never seen them that “methodical” (i.e. slow) as they were last night. From bringing the ball across the center to setting up a half court offense, last night was a result of the dilapidated bench.

By all accounts, Galdones will return in time for perhaps one road game and then the WAC tournament.

If Galdones was available, our offense would not have been the way it was to start the 2nd half.

  130. Kazz February 25, 2010 2:15 pm

Interesting feature article on Colorado. This would be a huge game for the Warriors to win on the road. The Warriors should have a good chance in this game as long as the altitude and road weariness (see: UNLV last year) problems are overcome.

On one hand Colorado has all of their starting OL back, which could be bad news for the Warriors. But on the bright side, that OL struggled badly last year. Dan Hawkins needs a huge season at Colorado to keep his job, so he cannot afford to lose the game to UH.

But they hardly had a chance behind an offensive line that allowed more sacks than all but three other teams nationally and earned fewer yards per carry than all but four. Eight different opponents dropped Hawkins and/or Hansen at least three times — including Missouri, which racked up eight sacks, and Texas A&M, which notched seven — and four different Big 12 backs ran for more yards individually than the Buffs gained on the ground as a team.

Both lines return every starter after suffering through major attrition and overhaul last year, and former blue-chips Ryan Miller and Bryce Givens could join with all-conference pick Nate Solder to shore up the offensive front, if not exactly turn it into a strength. Frankly, though, the talent level isn’t there — the relatively well-regarded 2008 recruiting class could improve the situation some as its members come of age, but with Scott and possibly Simas moving on, no other likely starter was rated better than three stars out of high school.

Mr. A House Sir If I May ! Former Players do show up from time to time BUT on their own accord or expense. Majority of mainland EX-Bows has family to raise and trying to travel to away games with a LARGE group of love ones is financially difficult. Ex-Bow Joe Frazier has 7 kids and lives in New York but not ONCE has the basketball office offered him an opportunity to see his once playing arena or re-visit Hawaii. Majority of Ex-Bows to their fault did not take advantage of the free education that was given to them and there fore put them self in a disadvantage situation in life as technology and the computer age has taken the way of the world.

Dr. Don Weir is “TREMENDOUS” an advocate to UH Athletics and true leader to Hawaii Warrior Football BUT he can’t speak out to ALL ex-players or have that quality time to really find out the “TRUE” reason why you won’t support Hawaii athletics as it is deeply rooted among many who has issues from their time playing and have yet to come to terms of their irresponsibility not Hawaii or former Coaches being at fault .

The LWC is really gear for Hawaii as I have been a member since 2000 and a board member going into my ninth year. Their primary focus is to help the athletes of today while having fellowship among former Hawaii players in all practicality that lives and work in Hawaii. Receptions are offered BUT majority of mainland athletes don’t see it at a service to them or investing financially with out any services being offered to them or their families.

In conclusion Mr. A House Sir we are where we are with only myself being active among Hawaii former athletes who “GIVES” from the heart to you good folks because you gave me recognition, respect and adulation through good and bad times. Once a Rainbow Warrior always a Rainbow Warrior that comes back ready to HONOR you good folks and Hawaii athletics as more I can offer will be a “VIOLATION” !

  170. wafan February 25, 2010 5:26 pm

Wow. OPI owns both dailies but intends to sell the other paper. I hope they leave the HA employees and the publication policies unchanged.

I do not think the competition will be Mr. Tsai’s boss since his paper’s company will be eventually sold.

  171. Kazz February 25, 2010 5:27 pm

Great… Now ALL of Hawaii Nei will no options but to stare at blurry photos when purchasing a newspaper.

  172. Kazz February 25, 2010 5:32 pm

I can’t find the story where OPI is going to sell the Bulletin.

    So, what then?

Is this like me owning a GMC car lot, purchasing a BMW lot, then getting rid of BMW units and then slapping a BMW logo on a 76 GMC van???

OPI wants Advertiser’s assets? Then KEEP THOSE THAT MADE THOSE ASSETS SO APPEALING TO YOU!!!

    OPI,

    As they say, “You can’t shine _ _ _ _.”

ASSETS AREN’T WORTH ANYTHING IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO OPERATE THEM!!

YOU DON’T GIVE DYNAMITE TO A LIT MATCH AND EXPECT GOOD THINGS TO HAPPEN!!!

  175. Kazz February 25, 2010 5:45 pm

    Per KGMB-

-Union contracts will not be honored.
-Bulletin to be sold IF there is a buyer, if not, then consolidation.
-Printing to be done at Advertiser’s plant in Kapolei.

  176. d1島 February 25, 2010 5:48 pm

  177. RedZone February 25, 2010 5:49 pm

  180. d1島 February 25, 2010 5:51 pm

The bright side is that the new owners include HI residents and those with local ties.

  181. wafan February 25, 2010 5:52 pm

Consolidation . . . and one blog for all. Hmmmm.

Why not keep those with the most hits?

Kazz is correct in keeping the assets that made the purchase so attractive in place.

  182. d1島 February 25, 2010 5:53 pm

More problematic for those on the darkside…Gannett owns MLM. 🙁

  183. Ralph February 25, 2010 5:54 pm

my understanding is that it’s the Bulletin that is having financial troubles, their principals have the money but don’t want to continue the trend of pouring money down an endless well, so they put in a bid to buy the advertiser and consolidate both papers. Cut office space, cut personnel, consolidate printing shop, dissolve the union contract by sellling or buying only the assets, we see this happening with the tv guys.

  184. wafan February 25, 2010 5:55 pm

Sure would be burdensome for the host to moderate each and every comment on a heavy day. Talk about not really having a life. Or is it easy with just 10 comments per day?

  185. Ralph February 25, 2010 5:57 pm

OPI stake holders are well known names in the community, I may be wrong, but Duane Kurisu is a real estate developer who help start the winter baseball league at Hans L’Orange, Jeffrey Watanabe, long time lawyer with Kobayashi, Watanabe, et al, part of the downtown Hui and old time Democratic party honcho, and Lawrence Johnson, past CEO of BankOH.

  186. Stephen Tsai February 25, 2010 5:58 pm

    Aloha.
    Thanks for the posts.
I was thinking of applying for TSA.
I like airports, and I think I could save on uniforms since it’s practically my last name.

  187. Kazz February 25, 2010 5:59 pm

    According to KGMB’s Howard Dicus:

Apparently Mr. Black wants to revamp the way news is done in Hawaii as opposed to Gannett operating as a Corporation that just so happens to be in the newspaper business.

Gannett’s firings in the past was a way to please their shareholders and good for their SMUG ways, they ended up with a profit.

Well then Mr. Black, it’s apparent that you appear to know “NEWS” and journalism… sooo… When will you be meeting with Stephen Tsai to discuss IMPROVING the manner in which the Bulletin’s sports blogs are run?

  188. Ralph February 25, 2010 6:01 pm

remember, the HA has Ferd as a columnist, Curtis as editor, and mr. P as another editor, so, I think the lateral move won’t impact the current advertiser staff but will the Bulletin, it’s the Bulletin that is losing money, but the Advertiser with a union contract that the new owners want to trash.

  189. Kazz February 25, 2010 6:01 pm

    ST,

You can refer TSA applications to a Mr. Dave Reardon.

  190. RedZone February 25, 2010 6:02 pm

  199. Ralph February 25, 2010 6:11 pm

I hope Shoji saves Ferrell’s scholarship for 2011, only Mafua and Kaaihue graduate after next season. He has 4 recruits this season, replacing 5 at once would put a heavy burden on the team unless a freshman comes in ready to contribute immediately like Kanani.

fully confident the wb and the wb show will go nowhere.. the wb show is the future. kudos to the HA team putting this together. live streaming media content is going to be all the rage. Gannet made the commitment to get a top notch platform. I dont see too many SB streaming videos. HA has beaten them to the punch and is kicking their arse. – if you dont get into live streaming video there’s a good chance you’ll get left behind.

Hey change is good! just dont change the HA website, WB and the WB show!

just heard about the sale, most unexpected since I thought Advertiser was doing better than the SB. who would have thought. ST keep us updates on what will happen

    Weekends were made for baseball

  206. SteveM February 25, 2010 6:20 pm

Surprising news even though I wondered when the print SB would fade out. Technology and internet has changed the news market and print media is slowly declining…although I appreciate the fact that I don’t need electricity to read newsprint except at night.

My two cents… is losing union contracts and Gannet such a bad thing for ‘Tiser staff? I dunno, but tech seemed … ahhh, nevermind… and ST seemed unhappy about the union contract w/10% pay cut. 🙄 Hope it doesn’t get worse, though.

I expect the The Warrior Beat and Mom’s Like Me would be untouched. Both have established national and international audiences.

But..if Stephen Tsai’s blog should go down, then we’ve had Plan B for a year or two. Buy and put a blog server in ST’s living room. Blog software admin by homey remotely. Blog software was identified last time we took to the “lifeboat”. Cost around $3,000.

    No problem… really. 👿

WOW Tsaiko Nation, Honolulu Advertiser has been sold to the Star Bulletin ! Lions and Tigers and Bears “OH MY” !

Man every time I turn around there is a buyout of one company over the other and rest assure good folks there will be changes. Mr. Tsai I just can’t believe they will demote you in any way BUT Corporate take over is NASTY as all they want to see is their expectations and their power of control.

No more Warrior Beat and Tsaiko Nation will be like macadamian nuts with out the chocolate “NO WAY JOSE’ ! Say it ain’t so !

This blog is “STRONG” as I can’t see it disapearing. I am on board with you folks as STRIKING the Star Bulletin and not buying it’s paper or leaving things as is will calm everybody and keep “PEACE” !

Long Live The “Tsai Meister” as I am ready on my end to roll up some Hawaii Corporate Star Bulletin Coconut Heads !

  232. RainbowCliff February 25, 2010 7:37 pm

I smell a RAT as this could be a conspiracy to get rid of Warrior Beat as the criticism is very strong against Coaches, Athletic Administrators, Politicians, University Personal or State Legislators. Remember outspoken forums in small places causes nervousness to the upper brass powers of be and I am sure that Hinshaw, Mack or Bob Nash won’t shed any tears IF the blog was dismantle and put to sleep forever as they know their approval fan base on this forum is under 50%.

A take over like this to “SHUT” strong voices and silence forever !

Watch Out Tsaiko Nation “The Fix Is In” !

  233. Ralph February 25, 2010 7:40 pm

I guess the competition is different, Big West vs a better WAC opponent, but he wants to make it to the NBA so he got to dig deep and always play at a high level.

  238. Garret February 25, 2010 8:03 pm

Honolulu ends up with one newspaper. Once upon a time they tried to do this and it failed the smell test. Why they allowed to do this now?

    NorthShoreFan,

Given current advertising and subscription conditions for the newspaper industry, regulators will not be surprised at all if Honolulu ends up with one newspaper. There are a number of cities I’ve read about around the country (at least one with higher population than the entire state of Hawaii) that went from 2 daily newspapers to 1 newspaper to *0* daily newspapers.

I always thought that the Advertiser was in better financial shape and the merger would occur the other way, but we got hints about Gannett’s feelings during the previous union negotiation…

  239. Garret February 25, 2010 8:05 pm

    RainbowCliff,

I really don’t think that anyone is buying the Advertiser just to get rid of ST’s blog. I *do* hope that the blog policies that the management or owners of the SB have enforced do not get enforced here…I cannot imagine how the long delays and the forced approval of every comment would work for a blog like ST’s.

  240. Garret February 25, 2010 8:09 pm

BSU asked to send some of their coaches to Austin to meet with Texas’ coaches. Texas wants to learn BSU’s trick play formula, which is understandable. But since BSU is the ones who asked for the meeting, I wonder what they are planning to learn from Texas? The article covers what Texas wants to learn, but doesn’t mention why BSU wanted the meeting.

Texas coach Mack Brown, who said the meetings Thursday and Friday were Boise State’s idea, hopes to learn from the Broncos’ creativity. His visitors are wide receivers coach Brent Pease, running backs coach Keith Bhonapha and special teams/linebackers coach Jeff Choate.

Last year, the Broncos ran seven plays on which someone other than the quarterback threw a pass or lateral, not counting the swinging-gate two-point conversions.

Six of those plays resulted in completions — netting 128 yards, or 21.3 yards per catch.

    Regarding # 232

“The Fix Is In” ! but it’s not from UH. Changes thirty years ago in the way investors could purchase companies is the root cause of this kind of consolidation. Absentee ownership of local news media by large corporations who have no interest in the community have damaged and changed the way we get the news. While a poor economy is the reason given for this, the fact is this devouring of local news media by corporate America has been going on for the past thirty years. This used to be illegal and is just plain bad for democracy.

A *major* breakthrough has apparently been achieved for the traveling wave nuclear reactor, the product of a team of top scientists funded by Bill Gates. The reactor starts a chain reaction starts with spent uranium fuel and the self-sustaining reaction could keep generating power for 100 years! If this could be built commercially, it would be a source of nearly infinite supply of low-cost energy, carbon-free energy for the world.

New way has been discovered to make vaccines…from tobacco plants! For example, it took forever to make swine flu vaccine, but this plant-based method could have had the vaccine ready in just 5 weeks with a capacity of 100 million doses per month. This is a cheap and scalable way to quickly make vaccines, and will help developing countries that cannot make conventional vaccines because they are too expensive.

The odds of sharing the same DNA profile with another person is more than 10 billion to 1, which is why DNA is so useful to solve crimes…except for identical twins, since they have the same DNA profile. One identical twin was arrested in this Georgia crime, but it turned out that the other twin committed the crime. It is nice that fingerprints and cell phone records could distinguish between the twins so the innocent man that was originally arrested was set free and his twin brother is now in prison.

    Cliff,

Regarding your #232 post, this blog is actually extremely positive towards UH when compared to what is said on other sites. Even the comments on Advertiser articles seem to be much more negative towards UH than what I see here.

  261. Garret February 25, 2010 8:54 pm

Esme posted an update on her site. It sounds like the decisions may be made very soon on some of the merger/acquisition issues.

I won’t lie: I’m seriously concerned about what will happen to us, our online ‘ohana that we’ve worked so hard and long to build, and that so many moms depend on. What happens next is entirely the Star Bulletin’s decision. Supposedly there is an executive meeting tonight in which some details will be hashed out, including what will happen to the Advertiser’s many online properties — not just us, but Metromix, myadvertiser.com, the dozens of blogs, etc. So when I know … you will know too. Hang in there…

  262. Jack Flash February 25, 2010 9:00 pm

Good luck ST. This blog is priceless, so i’m sure you will be taken care of once the dust settles.

  263. d1島 February 25, 2010 9:04 pm

    BaseBows win! 4-3.

Finally, some good news today! 🙂

  264. d1島 February 25, 2010 9:05 pm

Hope that Bro Mike and Tiffany are able to continue as planned…

  265. d1島 February 25, 2010 9:19 pm

esme updated on her site a few minutes ago post -exec mtg:

OK, gang, the details are trickling in, and I’m gonna be frank: It’s not looking very rosy.

Hawaii MomsLikeMe. AND Metromix both were NOT acquired in the Star Bulletin’s purchase of the Advertiser.

That actually is logical. Because MomsLikeMe.com is a Gannett property. And Metromix is also sort of a national franchise.

So the upshot for our site?

It definitely will not continue in the form you see here.

    🙁

  266. d1島 February 25, 2010 9:21 pm

    and also…..

Some of you probably are wondering now about timelines: How long will Hawaii MomsLikeMe.com be around, then?

    This is also not clear.

I’m hearing that everything at the Advertiser will be status quo for perhaps about six weeks. That takes us into about the end of March.

Beyond that … not clear yet.

And to be honest … whether I will still even have a job is also yet unclear.

  267. duffer (iPhone) February 25, 2010 9:22 pm

One door closes another one opens. I not to naive to think the aquisitions were because of the Warrior Beat Blog nor Esme’s. This aquisitions is purely a business plan. ST & Esme WILL survive because they are GREAT at what they do, they are AWESOME journalist. They will like cats, land on their feet bigger and better. I have no other reason than to think that they won’t.
But just in case, Cassy maybe needing a caddy when she’s on the LPGA. 🙂

  268. d1島 February 25, 2010 9:24 pm

as far as a replacement site for MLM….

Well, it’s still up to our new owners to decide if they want a moms site at all.

If they do decide they want to maintain a local moms site … it would have to be built from scratch, and I imagine it would be quite different from the format we enjoy with MomsLikeMe.com.

There is a great disturbance in The Force.

  269. MikiMiki February 25, 2010 9:31 pm

How can hawaii only have 1 newspaper? isnt that illegal? this state is mixed up!
good luck to Mr. Stutz. I still dont understand how Hawaii would loose an up and comer like stutz to Conference USA -Memphis????
lets see, first the guy at university of portland (forgot name, NFL coach) wanted him,
now the coach from Memphis wants him .go figure.

    baseball wins!

    bye bye ya’ll 😉

  270. Esme February 25, 2010 9:31 pm

Great disturbance in the Force, yes, sir.

Not looking good for the pink side, gang. So mahalo to everyone for all the good thoughts and expressions of support.

Meanwhile, I’m thinking about ST and the Dark-Siders, my Tsaiko brethren. Any talk of lifeboats again, just in case?

Shoot, Imma gonna hafta paint some lifeboat pink, methinks.

As duffer says, “as one door closes, another opens”. Relax and let it come to us. Then we’ll do whatever needs to be done. We aren’t a handful of people anymore. Great friendship survive great hardships. True dat.

  280. Slugger February 25, 2010 10:27 pm

Thinking positive for all of our friends at the HA.

On a lighter note… time to make you guys hungry…

Bread pudding just came out of the oven. It’s for a potluck tomorrow for a coworker. Probably gonna have to make some this weekend to appease hubby and keeed….

BTW, whose going to the vb game tomorrow night?

On Call the Coach, Coach Wade said BYwho has 4 “7th year” players. 😯

  284. Ralph February 25, 2010 10:38 pm

ST reported that the SSC reports actual tickets scanned for attendance, aloha stadium everyone who walks thru the gates, with or without tickets, so how does the baseball stadium report attendance-tonight the HA report 900+ in attendance, UH website reports 2200+ at the baseball game.

  285. d1島 February 25, 2010 10:39 pm

    Congratulations HiFlyer!

    Happy Birthday Joon Hartman!

    Whew….quite a day!

    Oyasumina-tsai….

  286. Ralph February 25, 2010 10:40 pm

maybe Herman Frazier and his auditor had their own way of counting tickets (attendance) and came up with their own revenue total, real or imaginary, with the UH finishing in the black to collect his bonus.

  287. Ralph February 25, 2010 10:41 pm

Jmxxx how about apeasing some hungry tsaikos, yum yum.

  288. Momona February 25, 2010 10:48 pm

It is not surprising that Gannett would sell The Advertiser. TA is one of only a couple of newspapers that Gannett owns that is losing money. Shareholders don’t want money-losers. According to a friend who works in sales there, home delivery circulation is down to only 72,000 on weekdays and only 85,000 on Sundays. TA’s total circulation went down by nearly 30% YOY. And it appears they haven’t lowered their ad rates to reflect this decrease.

Online news is great as are the blogs but they do NOT pay the salaries of the employees. If you look at the ads on TA site, there are mostly national ads that get very little dollars. Unfortunately, even if ST does a great job with this blog, the ad dollars on this blog does not pay his salary.

  289. Colomaohana February 25, 2010 10:55 pm

    Evening, gang!

I see Esme has shared the disturbing news about the Pink Side….

Anyone need a slightly overweight, loud, Filipino mommy of seven who loves to put back (quite) a few to help blog on their site(s)???

My “real” full time office job is still there, but what about the fun part of my life where I can pick on people and talk smack about life as a mommy and wife???

    ((((Tsai…..)))))

  290. anonymous February 25, 2010 10:59 pm

When you look back at all the pineapple fields on Oahu that at one time were robust with fruit and workers you are sadden when the owners announce that they are shutting down and going out of business. Lee Cataluna once wrote an article on this. In her article she described an empty pineapple field as a farrow field. She goes on to say that it brought tears to her eyes in watching the fields being burnt to the ground and seeing the ash and embers left behind. A long history of workers, including the first immigrants, toiled on these fields, earned a enough in starting familes and becoming part of the fabric that made up the community she wrote…and then displaced, like a pawns in a chess game. To Lee this struck a cord and it made her sad. To me reading her article made me sad.

With the announcement of SB taking over, and the current HA staff’s job outlooks in limbo, including Stephens, it makes me sad. In fact, it made me think of Lee’s article.

I do hope there’s a fortuitous bounce for all of the HA staff and there’s a happy resolution.

  291. PowderPuff February 25, 2010 11:01 pm

jm2375, a bunch of us will be there tomorrow night at SSC. I’ve got my special, 20-year-old “Beat BYU” towel (with old-school UH logo) ready for tomorrow night. Cheeeeee hooooo!

Congratulations, HiFlyer!!! Have a great time on Saturday. Those boys from Eugene sure have snazzy uniforms (well, duh!). The ‘Bows sure strand a lot of baserunners, but hey…nice win tonight.

ST and Esme, we will support you – always. I hope the owners know how much value you bring to your readers, the community and the field of journalism.

  292. papajoe2 February 25, 2010 11:04 pm

BSU moving? that’s old news. take away football and what do they have. that’s why they didn’t (couldn’t) move yet.

  293. papajoe2 February 25, 2010 11:09 pm

If the Mountain West takes them, then they have to beat BYU, Utah, and Texas Tech to qualify for the BCS in football. In the Wac, just Nevada, maybe UH, Nevada, Fresno State, or others that are average outside the WAC at best. Any other sport……. NADA.

  294. koakane February 25, 2010 11:10 pm

Colomaohana: Anyone need a slightly overweight, loud, Filipino mommy of seven who loves to put back (quite) a few to help blog on their site(s)???

    Re: comment #265

ooops, I was not aware that the national chain of MLM’s was owned by Gannet. But as duffer said in #267 — ST and Esme are too well established and will land on their feet like cats (although ST might bounce a couple times first). 🙂

I am confident that ST’s blog community and Esme’s Mom’s will continue…even though the format may change slightly. Somebody buy homey a flashlight…

  298. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2010 11:22 pm

” I was at UH and missed the meeting.”

And that ladies and gentlemen, is the long and the short of it. Tsai takes care of business.

And that is why this is such a great blog.
That is why hundreds of read people and post here regularly.

Because of our blog host’s tireless efforts and devotion to both his readers and to UH sports, the Warrior Beat has become an institution.

This blog serves the public and UH athletics like few other media entities do. The new powers-to-be should never forget that.

    Nuff said.

  299. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2010 11:24 pm

Did I mention that I love this place? 😆

  300. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2010 11:27 pm

Hey SteveM. I have to agree with you, buddy.

  301. BigWave96744 February 25, 2010 11:28 pm

The sad thing is there are great reporters on both side.
On the SB side it’s not just Dave Reardon but Jason Kaneshiro, Paul Honda, Cindy Luis, etc…

    I thought the K5,KGMB,KHNL merger was bad….

  302. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2010 11:28 pm

Geez I wonder if I should go on a bulla-like rampage and talk to myself for ten posts…

  303. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2010 11:33 pm

    BigWave-

All true. Good people are going to be affected. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. Prayers for all the employees at both papers. I’ll be truly saddened by the loss of either paper.

  304. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc February 25, 2010 11:33 pm

jm2375: We’ll be at the volleyball match Friday. Ran into Stretch at Murakami after the BowsBall win tonight, and he’ll be there as well. Perhaps we’ll wind up standing in the same line at one of the refreshment stands. .

DrDoc has to work Saturday afternoon so Protector and I will be watching the baseball game starting at 1:05. Afterwards, we’ll be going for the men’s basketball team’s last home game of the season. My ourth-hand source says that an announcement will be forthcoming.

Wow!!! the Advertiser sale really caught me off guard although I am not at all surprised given the state of “real” newspapers everywhere in the United States.

I do have some reports to make about the UH Athletic Department and Aloha Stadium CIP budgets, but I need to do a tad bit more research. Will report on what I find out as soon as possible.

With respect to the Board of Regents Big Island vacancy – click https://www.hawaii.edu/rcac/ for a description of the nominating process. I’m assuming that the will be a major announcement sometime over the weekend here on this blog as to what we will be asked to do.

Once the Regents Candidate Advisory Council selects two to four candidates, the list is then sent to Governor Lingle who will select one candidate.

That name is then sent to the State Senate where a public hearing will be conducted by Sen. Jill Tokuda (my State Senator) who chairs the Committee on Higher Education. The Committee will make a recommendatiion to the entire Senate as to whether the candidate should be confirmed. Usually, there are no problems, but there was one last year. Once the vote is taken, the new Regent will be sworn in & will assume his or her duties within a month.

All of this should take place by the end of April although there is a slight possibility that for a number of other reasons that either the Session will be extended or the Legislature will be called back for a Special Session. It’s way, way too early to do any speculating.

Off to bed – have another diagnostic eyeball procedure at 8:30 am to determine what will happen next. “See you” tomorrow evening.

  305. Stevenson February 25, 2010 11:37 pm

” I was at UH and missed the meeting.”

And that ladies and gentlemen, is the long and the short of it. Tsai takes care of business.

I hope ST called his boss to explain why he couldn’t make the meeting. Missing a mandatory meeting and putting it in writing is not a good first impression to your new boss.

  306. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 25, 2010 11:46 pm

If the majority of the people on this blog represent a so-called minority then so be it.

If raising kala for the Wahine softball program for their wonderful 2007 run in the Super Regionals is a minority thing… Then the majority can kiss our okoles.

If buying a table at a UH fundraiser is a minority thing then the majority can go to hell.

If raising money for UH football came out of a blog party and that is considered a minority thing then the majority is LAME.

If helping to fix football training equipment is a minority thing then the majority is all talk and cannot walk.

The majority can sit on their hands and complain until the sky actually falls, the minority will just do their thing and let their actions speak louder than words.

The reason for all of this is inspiration and information.

The majority have no damn clue as to the people behind our programs. From what is needed for a mom and pop-like program such as Wahine softball to what everyday people can do to help the football program, Stephen Tsai has brought out the stories and personalities of the coaches and student athletes that the majority wishes they knew about but only the MINORITY apparently cares about.

  307. Da Punchbowl Kid February 25, 2010 11:54 pm

    Hey Kazz-

    Like I said, an institution.

  308. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 25, 2010 11:54 pm

    Stevenson,

    We’ll try this again.

Stephen was at UH. UH football is one of his beats. Being a beat writer is Stephen’s job.

  309. BigWave96744 February 26, 2010 12:00 am

    Stephen,
Maybe you can be the next UH MBB Coach.

It would be a win-win for every one.
UH could offer you 1/3 of the current coach’s salary and you would be getting a pretty good payraise. I mean with the team being in last place for 2 straight years, you can’t do any worst…

Heck you and the Tsaiko’s alone could help increase attendence with is getting to a point of looking like prior men’s vball seasons…

Sorry but this season is PAU!

  310. BigWave96744 February 26, 2010 12:01 am

ooops “with is” = “where it’s”

  311. jm2375 February 26, 2010 12:01 am

    Kazz – dey you go!!

OK, might see you guys tomorrow night at the SSC. Depends on other people’s plans…

Off to bed… See ya in the morning… Oyasumina-tsai.

  312. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 26, 2010 12:04 am

    DPK,

To relate, there is a story about a jewel thief escaping into the woods and the authorities couldn’t catch him. So they burn the forrest down.

In short, if all goes to hell, take everyone down with you!

  314. Kazz (blkberry_storm) February 26, 2010 12:43 am

So did Oregon change uniforms after every inning with each becoming progressively UGLIER and tackier??? 😆

  315. PowderPuff February 26, 2010 12:51 am

Haha, Kazz! No uniform changes, but thank goodness they left the diamond-plate crap and the feathers back at home. But there are 3 more games…who knows what they’re going to pull out of their closet this weekend.

  316. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2010 1:04 am

Actually, I was at UH for volleyball.
They were going to have a meeting whether I was there or not.

  317. Stephen Tsai February 26, 2010 1:09 am

And, by the way, Gannett admitted that our paper was profitable.
But as we know, there are two types of profits: Making enough money to cover expenses and making enough money to please shareholders.
If you own stock in Gannett, this is a good short-term move. Gannett can recoup the money it spent on the press. It can make some money from the sale of the Kapiolani Boulevard property. Making any sort of money in this economy isn’t easy. Gannett is accomplishing that.

  318. SteveM February 26, 2010 1:37 am

Guess that makes sense that Gannett is selling instead of buying. But I almost consider the Kapiolani building a landmark. I would expect ST will be have the UH beat and the blog in the end…if he wants it.

ST — maybe it’s time to think about opening that BBQ Sports and Karaoke restaurant. You work the real sports bar portion… 🙂

    Good night!

  319. Matt February 26, 2010 1:38 am

There is a streaming video of the meeting on the Advertiser homepage.

  320. tommui February 26, 2010 11:22 am

Apparently there is another “Tom” on the blog…

The Warrior Beat may “belong” to the Advertiser but “Tsaikos” belongs to us thanks to Stretch’s suggestion. Hope he breaks 100 one of these days!
