Anonymous donors
The athletic director should be commended for detailing an ambitious plan to increase fund-raising and improve the athletic department’s standing.
What also should be appreciated are the “anonymous donors” who have made contributions that cannot be found on bottom lines, building plaques or in state-of-UH speeches.
These donors don’t write big checks. But they give something more valuable: Time.
Three claps for:
• The coaches who began working even before they were officially on the payroll because athletic schedules aren’t synchronized to HR’s timetable.
• The graduate assistants who paid for their own school textbooks.
• The athletic trainers, equipment workers, and media-relations folks who are caught in the athletic department’s new no-overtime-pay mandate. They have been told to hold their work to no more than eight hours each day and 40 hours each week. Last week, the football team practiced on Sunday. By Thursday, the day the team was to depart for the Oregon State game, the support staff was reaching the 40-hour limit. (In fact, the staff already exceeded it.) Told they would not receive overtime pay, they kept working, and haven’t had a day off since.
• The doctors, surgeons and nurses who volunteer their services and pay their own way to road games.
• The owner of a paint company who attends every UH football game, home and away. Before each game, he is helping to prepare the locker rooms. After games, he is collecting laundry and helping to pack the uniforms and equipment. He pays his own way, too.
• The same people who work in the athletic department all week are the ones working crowd control and assisting with introductions and other on-field events during football games at Aloha Stadium. They do this as part of the helping-each-other loyalty that is the fabric of the Aloha Spirit. They are not paid for working the games.
• The fans who pay for championship bracelets for the softball team, and the ones who contribute the post-match dinners for the volleyball teams.
UH is seeking donors with big checkbooks.
It already has donors with big hearts and small egos.

What people need to remember, is that any great and sustainable plan, whether it might be in business or on the football field takes a certain amount of time and patience. Unlike the corporate world, football has no succession planning. Thus, you start anew every time you have a new coach. Waxing the history of this blog, more than a few folks have questioned the bonafides of Coach Chow; in short, that is a fool’s errand. All one need look with a critical eye, is the same measures and analytics you would apply in a business posit: history of recorded success; relevant skill set to the job; and institutional comportment and attitude relative to the institution. He has all of them…
The one are that does come out short, and which is systemic to a program like Hawai’i is not the ability to attract a known quality like a Coach Chow, but rather the resources to provide to him, i.e. money, so that he can retain an upper margin staff. Now, let me preface, we do have a solid crew with the present staff, but he is no doubt limited in the type of people he can hire. Many of the BSC programs, have not one or two, but three or more people that make 200plus as an assistant. So, if we were to identify an inflection point for improvement that only the university can address, I would submit this is a rather major one.

On that note, mahalo to all those who participated in yesterday’s UH Rainbow Warrior Volleyball golf tournament. (Tall Asian Man and Small Asian Woman with large mouth 😀 ) Seemed like everyone had a great time. Got to meet some of the MVB newcomers and welcome back some of the returnees.
BTW, proceeds from the tournament will help fund the fall trip to USC for a 2-day tournament.

Saw Texas Tech’s 2nd straight game & was very impressed again. They got a brand new coach, are 2- 0 with freshman QBs running a no huddle hurry up offense. Last week’s victory @ SMU was on the road & this QB was a walk on true freshman. Lot offseason left and they can’t sneak up on anyone anymore. Yesterday against #20 TCU he goes out with an injury & another freshman QB comes in to clinch with a TD pass.

some people suggest dennis erickson tends to leave teams in worse conditions than when he took over. his last year at the university of miami, they didn’t win the big least and were pending ncaa sanctions, not to mention he had snapped several miami winning streaks along the way. and he left the san francisco 49ers as the worst team in the nfl after just 2 season.
36–Good point, thus you can plan for immediate returns or you can build for the future. Erickson is a unique case study, in that he represents the type of gun slinger that has a fairly decorated success rate at a half-dozen universities, but at what cost? Thus, the more germane question is what does the institution want out of the coach? Too many times, the adage ” be careful for what you wish” is much more appropriate than what portends on the surface.
Now, at present, I think what serves as fodder for many, is that we have an individual that is obviously planning for the long-run, and trying to created internal attributes that we have longevity and moreover sustainability. Lets see if the administration we hold up their end with both resources and recognition of these efforts.
Thanks ST. The UH athletic staff really is a family and here’s hoping that the department can someday bring in enough money to at least pay these people for their time contributing to an endeavor that helps raise the quality for many of us. Another staff member who goes beyond the call of duty is the basketball secretary Bobby Omoto. She has been at virtually every NCAA summer league game for years supplying drinks, first aid, and support to the UH players participating. When she retires her dedication and those of many on the UH staff will be hard to replace.
35–While many of the Punahou alumni run in different circles than UH, you make a rather stark and profound comparison of the two institutions; one a state university and the other a prep school. One would think with the combination of legislative, federal (via research and technology) and alumni, that there would be no question who has the more ample endowment, unfortunately, it is Punahou with roughly 186 million to about UHs 176 million.
While UH operates from the get-go under a deficit, that it is to say, it has a very small tax base in which to derive monies, in some ways it is sad that given the tens of thousands of graduates, who have walked through Manoa, there is not a more profound and sustained development objective achieved through its alumni network. Further, given that Punahou supports roughly only 3800 students versus the over 20,000, UH has to support, and some in some very technical and expensive disciplines, that money does not go very far. That said, there are certainly some branding and loyalty lessons the folks in Manoa can learn from those located on Punahou street.

That being said, the fact that the staffers are working beyond the 40 hours (and what seems like well beyond the 40) and not being compensated is very troubling. Mandating no OT but “allowing” them to work beyond 40 hours is horseshit.

I wonder if they could change those positions from hourly to salary? They put in way too much time & effort, imagine if they got sick or had to miss work for whatever reason & were docked pay after putting in so much non-payed OT.
Can only add my thanks to the everyday people who demonstrate their loyalty by giving time and support. Time and care are more valuable than money, and probably more meaningful to the student athletes, if not now then upon reflection as they continue their adult lives beyond school.

Money (expenses) SAVED as a result of volunteers should appear as a budget line item. Also the $$$ contributed to AKA and UH Foundation by the little guys.
“Allowing” workers to work overtime without compensation is leaving UH in a position for a Federal lawsuit for permitting that practice. If the administrators know that no ovetime will be paid, in my opinion, the admistrators need to look at the staffing and job assignments to cover the work on-hand without the need to work overtime. Who’s in charge of that operation?
#47…Go bows…..This has always been a touchy issue. I can relate to the student’s feeling that tuition hikes are terrible and that the bottom line is that it’s hurting their pocketbook. But the reality of it is that UH tuition ($4,600) is less than a majority of institutions out there when compared to comparable schools on the mainland. Most state universities charge more than what UH is charging their resident students for undergraduate degrees. Just looking at the UC system schools, the average tuition is $13,000. UW’s tuition is $12,397. Oregon State University’s tuition is $8,500. Smaller institutions like the University of Idaho is $7,000 for residents and Boise State is $6,500 for residents.

#43…What’s funny about Hawaii residents is that most will support their high school even though they may have graduated from UH. I believe it was estimated that UH graduated over 200,000 people. If all of the alumni were to donate even a small amount to the university, that should result in a good chunk of change. However, for some reason, graduates of UH do not have a connection to the school….

Had a chnace to visit with Ben Jay in Portland….talk about genuine….he is that and more. I was there with 4 mature “Warriors” for the game. I think I shamed a few into sending in a few bucks for the cause….all we can do is be appreciative and give back, in the hope that those that benefit will feel like I do…..thankful for what I got and how it turned out. I have more Na Koa shirts than day of the week (I have also turned down a few). I hope folks appreciate what they are doing and going to do…..they can count on my support…Go Warriors!!!!!! Old School Dave — I thought you were older. In my senior year high school, gas was 39 cents a gallon (“ethyl”– the most expensive grade), UH tuition was $120/semester plus $15 (?) athletic book for football/basketball, Mid-Pac and Hawaiian flight coupons under $30 one way, and no MacDonalds yet. Oh yeah, Grace’s lunch wagon at UH was 65 cents a plate.
The UH student athletic fee today is very reasonable at $50 and certainly hasn’t caught up with tuition hikes.

I think it’s really good to have dreams and goals. But at the same time, the hope is that UH can use some of that additional $8 million to hire workers or pay overtime.

For instance, I hear the strength coach came in earlier, on his own, because UH needed to start the offseason conditioning program. It’s great someone will pay his own way, but a program can’t depend on the goodness of others.
Also, what’s happening at UH is not unique. Your co-workers and probably yourself give love time to their company. This is Hawaii. This is what people do.
Like back in the day when the neighbors poured cement, every one on the street came to help.

Plate lunches today are pushing $10, and some of those are the minis!! Graces was the best back then (in the lunch wagon) as far as value, portions, and good food.
I knew a guy who played at Utah State back in the early 80s. He said that through community donors and a large volunteer effort, they expanded their stadium from 20,000 to 30,000 in order to meet the NCAA mandate for minimum stadium capacity for D-I status.
One thing good about this week is can kapu more than one stall for tailgate!
Re 51/Kaneohe Resident’s post about a lawsuit. My understanding is that if people are doing time sheets or time cards, the government (feds?) can review materials even without a lawsuit and require back pay, even years after the fact. Long ago, I got a letter in the mail that I was due money from this company and to go in during business hours on any of a few specified days, bring ID, sign a release and get a check. I thought it was a joke because although I worked crazy hours, I’d never complained. However, the letter was for real. If this happens in the private sector, gotta think that it would hold true in the public sector, too, right?

83-The sage counselor has hit it on the head. Again, viewing this from a perspective of what other states and moreover state funded universities, UH-Manoa is on the very upper margin of affordability and value.
A little digression–those state schools that have national reputations, e.g. CAL, UT-Austin, UMichigan, etc….are only in those position because of specific conscription by their respective legislatures decades ago to become primary research institutions. Further, they are supported by large state tax bases, and their tuition is far higher than most other states.
Bottom line, to a certain degree, you do get what you pay for in higher education–and this is especially true in sciences and technical fields. Don’t get me wrong, you can obtain a top notch education at UH, but you are going to have to apply yourself, and do much of the leg work on your own.
#83 Tom….I agree. I for one thought I got a good deal at UH for my $700 a semester. I worked @minimum wage to pay off my own tuition and books and expenses. I never was one that protested the increases in tuition that were proposed during my time but, just like today’s students and Ka Leo, many individuals did protest the tuition hikes back then and they were put off for almost 5 years. The year after I got out, the tuition went up like 120 – 125 percent. People were stunned at the amount of the one time increase. However, if we had done it gradually over the 4.5 years I was at UH, it wouldn’t have been such a hard, one time hit. Just saying….
#73 Great memories about those days Mr. Lock. Remember once me and my Pops was struggling to pour our patio foundation, it was just me an him and we was dying. A Hawaiian brother looked over the fence, saw us struggling and jumped right over as soon as he got his boots. Then our Japanese neighbor from across the street came over too. Hawaii is a special place and we should never forget that.

87 Jimmythelock: regarding the lane change thank you, which we practice religously as a family, I once kept a tick mark survey of who waved with a thank you and who didn’t. With some exceptions, an overwhelming number of caucasian and foreign national asian type drivers did not wave thank you while the “local” drivers again with a few exceptions, did take the time to wave. Very unscientific I know but see if you notice the same.

82. It’s pretty unique to Hawaii because of how many private schools there are. Being from the mainland, the vast majority of alma mater donations go to the college, not high school. Based off what Ive seen, there’s little give back to public schools. I have not stats to back that up but that’s what it feels like.
Just my opinion… public schools/universities seem to be treated like something that’s there because it has to be. I think that because the government funds public schools, feel less inclined to donate because they don’t know if their money will be used wisely.
When you have private schools, students/alumni feel like their experience was a high privilege because its not easy to get admitted and to some extent, feel lucky to be there. So theres a better feeling to donate. Also, private schools solicit donations much more aggressively because donations help fund their operations. They don’t have the state funding to pay their expenses.

FUHA – #98 – maybe it’s just me, but as an alum of a private university with a large endowment, I don’t feel the need to donate. My HS is now a charter school, so I give what I can in time and money. I also now give my time and money to certain UH sports programs because I believe they deserve a lot more than they are getting. The school that I used to work in at UH was dismantled and I will not forgive them for that until the currently existing program is elevated back to its previous status as a school.
We now return to you to regularly scheduled programming.

It doesn’t matter how big the guys you bring in are.. it’s how good they are against the team they are playing. We don’t have enough of those.. If this doesn’t work, then do that… kind of plays… We have, If this doesn’t work, try try try again…

119 – Actually MIH, I believe that it does matter how many big, athletic guys you have. The more you have the better. Remember the two key words are big AND athletic. All of Hawaii’s best linemen from the past were both big and athletic. Tala Esera, Dane Uperesa, Samson Satele, Isaako Sopoaga to name a few. All were good sized and very athletic. Having good lines on both sides of the ball gives a team a good place to start when designing a team.

Rather than naming a facility/gym or field after a Corp. i.e Hawaiian Airlines Field I think Ben Jay should approach “whales” with the idea of naming something after the donor and not his/her company
BJ should check the history of big local companies. The approach is to immotalize the name of their founder or key figure in their history.

Seems to me hawaii’s crowd is old…always has been.
why?

older crowd
saturday games
an evening start time.
parking issues
swap meet
hard for neighbor islanders to come to games
Things that have changed since sell-outs back in the 80’s
cable tv
pay per view
internet
the schedule of teams we play
and the biggest-rivalry games
As for big name schools coming to town, remember when it was like a once in a lifetime event when they came to town-we all had to see it. Now, not so.
so what constants do we need to change? what things that changed do we need to re-think? Where or who are our true rivals that was almost a guaranteed sell-out? Big name schools, it seems instead of us breaking the bank to get them here, we need to go to their house for body-bag games.
Imagine a schedule of away games at Florida and Michigan (or 2 big name body bag games)
other games with BYU, Boise St., Utah, Fresno St. Air Force, Navy, Army, Notre Dame, and other ex-rivals or teams we hate but love to play.
In my opinion we can have a bad team, but if its a rival or special interest game we do tend to show up.
In my opinion what’s hurting football is a sub-par team as far as wins goes, and teams on our schedule that just don’t move us, or games that don’t have something on the line-like a championship.
The fan that comes to all games, he will be there no matter what. But to be real, it has to be a game or a team we play that does matter to get the rest of the fans in the stands.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

While I love Hawaii and it will always be home for me. The keiki and people must learn from the great Milt Freidman…There is no such thing as a FREE lunch.
Tuition is ridiculously cheap for the University tuition. Parents should be saving from the day you have a child to send your kid to college. I was a single Mom who was alone. I saved 20 bucks per pay check. As I made more I saved more. The University if Hawaii is in the TOP 150 Universities in America. I’m going to be frank, not all children should be in college. That’s just a fact. As parents it is our duty to try to give our children better opportunities then we had. I tried. My own kid was a late bloomer. Did not graduate college until 25. He worked for the ABC stores thinking he would be able to get to at least mid management. I told him he was nuts!!! He had the wrong last name. When he finally realized he needed to attend college, I made him attend a JC College. El Camino. He then transferred to Cal State Long Beach JD attained his degree in Computer information Technology. Let me say this, it took him several months of temping before he got his first big job at Toyota Corporation. Starting pay, 58,000 bucks per year. He’s now worked his way being patient and makes 6 figures. Not bad. Heck my first job in Hawaii I made 13,000 bucks a year. Back in the 70’s women were passed over. First Hawaiian Management training paid only 450 bucks per week. Who could live on that? But the men were making 700 bucks per week.
Folks need to realize it cost money to live. I worked 2 jobs to send my kid to Cenrtal Union Pre School. And then to Star of the Sea and Mid PAC since he was not Punahou material. I understood that. But I still gave Punahou money every year. Even if it was 25 bucks, I gave them money. I appreciated the financial aid I got from them.
College I had to take out student loans. I paid them off. Took me 10 years but I did it. My Mom pid what she could. But I still had to work at a farm stand and then at Sears to have some extra money. At UCSD our Saturday night was young to the midnight show of Rocky Horror picture Show. Some times Mosi Tatupu would invite us to come see a USC game. We caught the Greyhound Bus to the game. Cost 4.75 round trip. We slept on the floor in Mosi’s room. They would sleep in other dorm rooms. Those were fun weekends.
All I see folks do is complain. Parking is cheap. In my little town you get 7 minutes for twenty-five cents in the meter. In downtown LA it cost at Cedars Sinai, 5 bucks for 15 minutes. Property taxes are cheap there. But pay is low. Why?its a trade off you get health insurance with your job there. Most folks get no health insurance unless you are in a union or at a BIG corporation. Queens was like 7 bucks maximum.
Students complain about a 50 dollar athletic fee. Give me a break! Tuition must go up. There is no law that says college is free. Unions are killing Hawaii, California has bankrupted Detroit the Motor City. Politics and our lawmakers need to do what’s right for the majority of the populous. Who makes 100 percent of their pay in their pension?
It’s time for people to wake up and smell the coffee. If you want a college education it’s not FREE. Study hard, apply for grants, schollies and loans if you have to. But be pro active and stop complaining people. I could have gone to UH and lived at home. But I wanted that mainland experience.
Sorry but tired of all the whining about wanting everything for FREE. It’s time to put up, or shut up. Move on and move forward in life. My husband and I never went to UH. But we give and dig deep. Why? I love Hawaii. It will always be home. My husband and I give to football. We have founded a program for UH Hilo. And we are working next with Mania.

LOL… Not be outdone, but the Big 10 refs are trying to stake their claim for worst refs. They somehow botched a FG call. UCLA clearly missed wide right, but the ref under the goalpost called good.
At least the reply booth overturned and made the correct call. Big 12 refs still have a firm grasp of worst refs with their performance on Thursday’s TCU v TxTech game.

139–Agree with everything you said, except for that UH-Manoa is not considered by most academics to be in the top 150. Now let me preface by saying I have many undergraduate degree from UH-Manoa, and that the school more than fulfills it mission as a state university to its fortunate citizens. But, by most of the metrics that go into the ranking of schools, it is not considered a top 150 school–those schools that are ranked above Hawai’i have significant more research dollars, endowment, tighter faculty-student-ratios, and higher graduation rates.
That said, Manoa has many exceptional programs, and produces more than its’ fair share of scholars, but its major role is to provide a major college experience/opportunity for its residents, and it does that in exceeding fashion. But, because a variety of factors and the primary objectives of its own intent, it does have some limitations.
