Night 3: Notes

The Warriors had 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills for the first time this training camp. The offense received several new plays, which resulted in an uneven performance. The same menu of plays will be used this afteroon (4 p.m.-6 p.m. practice), then more plays will be added for practices Friday and Saturday.
• It appears quarterback Kiran Kepo‘o will not play for the Warriors this fall. His No. 12 jersey is being given to Greg Alexander.
• Running back Jake Heun has been hobbled by a tight calf. He suffered the injury during Monday’s practice.
• Mike Washington made the best play. He broke off a bubble route, cut between two defenders, caught Inoke Funaki’s pass and race away.

Deondre Powell is regarded as the fifth recruit to commit for 2009. But next year’s class also should include the grayshirts, such as wide receiver Kalua Noa, defensive end Alema Tachibana, linebacker Art Laurel, and defensive backs Christian Vasconcellos and Earvin Sione.

Courtesy of our friend Jon Nielsen, here are pictures of Powell, as well as one with quarterback Corey Nielsen:

Friends are planning a fundraiser for former UH offensive lineman Bernard Carvalho tomorrow at the Disabled American Veteran on Nimitz. The event is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each. Several former players will attend, including Pride Period.

good morning y’all.

lizk…..ask the doc if he should rule out menigitis, since its been going around.

….
on another note….so if sione, tachibana, vasconcellos, and laurel are pushed back to grayshirt status.

is it saying to us that the apr was worst than anticipated therefore, not as many available scholarships for 08?

or will some be counted as 08 and some counted for 09?

and where does noa count?

and, and what about waylon lolotai’s coming in 09?

now that we don’t have a permanent compliance person, what’s the deal here?

and, and, and i do agree that the 09 class is off to such a great start and its off the charts as far this program goes.

also, i am hearing that one or two more las vegas top 20 players may be committing soon including a former iolani student. tuioti’s worth is being proven already.

47. sunlinelv August 6, 2008 9:51 am

Here is an article about another potential recruit from the las vegas area:
(from rivals.com)

“The Palo Verde Panthers are one of the most talented teams in the western region this year. With a boatload of speed in the backfield, this team also has an impact linebacker that has seen interest really pick up in him during the summer.

“I went to the All-Poly Camp and since then I have seen things really pick up,” said Liloa Nobriga. “I picked up an offer from Hawaii last week while Utah and Stanford have given verbal offers. Stanford says they just need my test scores. Colorado and Arizona have also said they are very interested while Utah State said they are close.”

“I measured in at 6-foot-3 and 225-pounds, I have also improved my strength. This year, it’s just about taking the game day-by-day. It’s all about the team. We can’t stop thinking about the last game (Sunset Title game versus Gorman). We really want to get the state title this year.”

“Right now I would say I’m leaning toward UH. I like that Coach Tony Tuioti is there.”

“I will always like UNLV as well. They were my first offer. I rally like Coach Mike Sanford and Upresa. They are recruiting me hard.”

“I will be visiting Arizona this Saturday on an unofficial. Coach Michael Smith is the coach that has been recruiting me the most. If they offer, that could be touch to pass. It’s the Pac 10 and I have a friend there that says he loves it”

As for a personal goal, Nobriga has set the bar high looking to notch 150 tackles and 20 sacks. According to him, he enjoys having big goals.”

48. Stretch August 6, 2008 9:52 am

The bottom teams in the WAC need to “Step Up”. Even Hawaii at 81 is not too hot, that is the bottom third of the country.

Per SI’s Poll
Conference Rankings (average of all teams)
SEC 34.08
Big 12 36.50
Big East 39.38
Big 10 40.82
Pac 10 44.16
Mountain West 71.56
C-USA 80.92
WAC 84.22
MAC 91.92

59. Stephen Tsai August 6, 2008 10:02 am

Liz:
Teams are allowed to offer a maximum of 25 new scholarships a year, with a maximum of 85 players total on the overall roster. But, doing the math, you can’t bring in 25 players a year because that would exceed the 85-player limit. There are a lot of scholarship players completing their eligibility after this season, so there’s more scholarship room in 2009 than now.

60. al August 6, 2008 10:02 am

st….where is leatigaga on the depths?

homey….you also read my thoughts. we probably go after another wr, qb, rb, and a couple of corners. lb’s are always good finds cause they could also end up on the line. but, where’s the beef? we seem to have many offers out there for many a local lineman, but, so far no committals.

pride……speaking of zorn. funny how he publicly critiques colt’s improvising, risk taking style. i recall him to be a scrambling, whirling dervish, miracle playmaking quarterback who was the second coming of fran tarkenton during his heyday at seattle.

61. gigi-hawaii © August 6, 2008 10:03 am

ST, Disabled Veterans? That was misleading. Glad that Carvalho is well.

62. Stephen Tsai August 6, 2008 10:03 am

Grayshirts also can count again the 2008 recruiting class in certain situations. So there’s some flexibility. Tony Tuioti can sort it all out. Will bring him in as a chat guest when things calm down a little bit. Right now we’re all overheated because of the mid-day practices.

63. homey ⑤ August 6, 2008 10:03 am

Ever since that reporter from SI pulled that stuff about Michelle Wie’s drop at the Samsung, I stopped reading SI and even going to their website. Will have nothing to do with them. If that’s the kind of reporters that have, I’m not surprised they have Hawaii so low.

Leatigaga, who is back from knee problems, has a way to go to make it into the rotation.

70. al August 6, 2008 10:11 am

stretch….i like the fact that (again) we get no respect. i am sure a lot of the low rankings are the result of the sugar bowl demise coupled with the loss of colt brennan and the four horseman. also, add to the mix the “absence” of projected starter graunke, we become an easy target to push down the rankings.

but, i like it. doesn’t it make a national power like florida tend to overlook us? i’ll bet they will spend some time on their preparations for us but will also be looking ahead to the huge rivalry game with miami the following week.

i like it. who knows? they could be ripe for the pickings.

SI used to be known more for its great writing — and photos, of course — than for the day-to-day reports. Then several years ago, they started to lose some of their best writers, and they went with all of the small features. As a weekly, the magazine isn’t equipped to meet the up-to-the-keyboard-click demand of today’s public.

82. what's wrong August 6, 2008 10:30 am

Eh. What’s wrong wit you?

Who cares if get typos?

ST, please see post #68…

84. mauiwarrior August 6, 2008 10:30 am

al:thanks for the clarification on the gray shirt………….

Everyone: who cares what the media says, they don’t know shirt……..the thing we can do is turn around at the end of the season and remind them how stupid they were……….and maybe it will allow us to surprise some people………..low expectations from the media=motivation for the players, lets use it to our advantage

85. Da Punchbowl Kid August 6, 2008 10:32 am

I’m confused… I could have sworn that you said to save the barnacles for YOU! 😆

86. gigi-hawaii © August 6, 2008 10:33 am

let’s hope the media opinions don’t result in low morale for the players.

87. al August 6, 2008 10:33 am

thanks for leatigaga update.
hope he gets back to playing shape. he looked like a beast.

88. homey ⑤ August 6, 2008 10:35 am

DPK – Opihi yes, barnacles no.

So when you headed out to the next practice? I’m waiting to see when James can go. I’m looking at a morning practice when the players are in full gear. Then maybe go somewhere afterward to replenish bodily nutrients.

89. Hawaiianbod August 6, 2008 10:36 am

Good Morning Tsaikos!

Anyone know the mentally-challenged individual who posted posts 598-600 on yesterday’s blog???

Or maybe smoking some LSD laced ganja from Jamaica. Or shooting some opium from Afghanistan that was pissed on by some wimpy Afghan who can’t protect his own country.

K-den homey…how is that you know so much about all these things?

Hey UHfan808 and Midori7…I’m coming to practice today also.

96. mauiwarrior August 6, 2008 10:42 am

the team shouldn’t get low morale from the media, they’re football players, it will serve more as motivation, u know how those things work, tell someone they can’t do something and they will attempt to prove them wrong…………………DA WARRIORS will prove that they belong up there with Boise St. and Fresno St. or at least ahead of Nevada

97. gigi-hawaii © August 6, 2008 10:42 am

homey, I was very upset when my aunt criticized my 2nd book. Didn’t speak to her for almost 3 years!

Of course, she went out of her way to call all our relatives and tell them not to buy my book, and if they had already done so, not to read it.

I can understand your ire, especially since it was autobiographical. But you’ve got to roll with the punches. As long as they’re upset about the content and not the style, you’re OK.

104. Stretch August 6, 2008 10:51 am

Speaking of glasses – I will finally be making the “Tsaiko” beer mugs next week Friday for the people who ordered them. Sorry for the delay. If anyone wants the 34oz beer mug, please email tsaikoparty at yahoo and we will include you in the order.

I think we’ll all be intoxicated by Caryn Kunz’s and Kelli Miura’s singing.
By the way, DPK can only come to practice if he promises not to violate the tree again.

At least DPK had a very cool T-shirt.

Nope, DPK gets lifetime immunity from being SMU’d.
He was the first blog reader I met in person. (Wena only started reading the blog in December.)
Isn’t it funny how SMU’d had one meaning, and then half the UH staff bolts there, and I guess it has added meaning.

166. al August 6, 2008 11:55 am

j….the simplest way to justify the price fluctuations of airfares from day to day, or week to week, or month to month as so on is that it is based upon the simplest of business practices and that being; “supply and demand” determines prices.

oh, notwithstanding, cost of sales, i.e. fuel, labor, maint. etc.

167. Rob25 August 6, 2008 12:00 pm

Best I know, most of the Hawaii Tsaikos will be scattered, but most, if not all, travel group tours will be in Orlando because of the theme parks.

I don’t know of any “gatherings” on game day as it will take us about 3 hours by bus from Orlando to Gainsville and then rush back to the buses for the long ride back to the hotel.

186. A-House August 6, 2008 12:31 pm

If your parents are flying in to Orlando on 8/27/08 – our function is on 8/29/08 or day before the game.

Maybe they can join us?

187. Committed Lurker August 6, 2008 12:32 pm

Expensive the fares from LA. I see them all over the place from the low-mid $500s as referenced above all the way to $800+ for close-in dates.

DPK: Do you have any evidence to repudiate the claims made above?

should tyler make it back in a week.
how far back would he be?
where would he start from? #2, #3, #4,………….?
or would he languish on the bench for the rest of the year?
should he consider a change of scenary at a div3?

just some tough questions.
sort of like a reality check.

191. WarriorMojo August 6, 2008 12:46 pm

DPK, as you know, I was a witness to the whole affair. I can’t stand by quietly anymore. The truth must come out.

That tree did NOT give its consent to be violated. No way. It didn’t have a chance. You just climbed aboard and started… well, you know what you did.

192. al August 6, 2008 12:48 pm

these smallish receivers of late remind of the justin colberts, channon harrris, and of course, chad owens types of scatbacks that enjoyed so much success.

can’t imagine a burly linebacker trying to matchup with them.

then when they go nickel or dime to cover we bash em with the run game inside the box.

gotta love it.

dpk’s lucky he’s not in lanai city.

i was told that if you sped through town your neighbor could notate your license plate and report you. soon thereafter, lanai city’s finest would be knocking upon your door with a ticket in hand for reckless operation of a vehicle.

hey, i wonder if tree police would do such an arrest.
i know where he lives.

198. FloridaTed August 6, 2008 12:52 pm

Good afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Sofar, looking at everything that is coming out from training camp and the recruiting front, all I see is a tremenously deep team developing. We seem to be getting closer and closer to BCS quality depth. In future years there will be only reloading and the rebuilding days are over.

Our chances to beat Florida are becoming more ligit by the day.

Urban Meyer is having his team practice during the less heat hours, hah? We might be better conditioned than the Gators. It’s not even that hot in Florida right now.

LizK,

Did you go to the Doctor yet?

Al, excellent questions. To me Tyler needs to reassess his goals for the season. The chance to be #1 QB and to lead the team are gone. If he has any expectations in that regard, he is in for great disappointment. If that is what he craves, he should try to catch on with a 1AA team right now. Portland State?

On the other hand he will probably grow much more as a person if he sticks it out here, accepts his role as a backup QB, makes up his grades, and graduates. That would show maturity and personal development. AND, as he does that, who knows what happens during the course of this long season?

On the other side, as actual eye witnesses, we have ST, Stretch, Mike the El Supremo, Princess Leila, SJ, Myki, Jaymes Song and me. Other possible witnesses are DaveR., Kanoa Leahey, and Mr. Linkner. It should be noted that DPK was sucking up to the last three so there testimony may (or may not) be compromised.

Portland City Grill for pau hana is usually pretty awesome (kind of pricey) but the food, drinks, 30th floor view and piano bar make it fun.

Henry’s 12th street tavern with over 100 beers on tap (in the old Henry Winehardts brewery) is also a good place to eat/drink and be merry.

It also seems that the people that call in really FEED off of that kind of talk.

There is optimism and then there is BLIND faith. However it seems that people that are inclined to that way of thinking always seem to believe that those that are optimistic are just “fooling themselves”.

People like that can say whatever they want, be WE ALL HERE love this team and love this school.

Besides there is only so many hours in the day to be negative and doubtful.

Isn’t life full of challenges enough that we do not need to start creating negative feelings within ourselves?

Sure if we lose, whatever, move on and believe in the next one.

Last season’s triumphs gave us the fans so much to be proud of and Coach Mack and Jim Donovan are going to give us MORE to be proud of in the near and distant future.

284. SteveM August 6, 2008 3:26 pm

Now that James has the TV-Gate on the 30th all set up, I ‘ll work on the Karaoke Call that is coming up in 10 days. Since it has a tailgate-like component and fuud, fuud, fuud (and an occasional bar or three)– I’ll start trying to coordinate (or at least list) the potluck food items soon.

We never, ever got the potluck and Tsaiko–Gate food under control last year– looked like 12 people were bringing something but in reality 40 people did and there was enough food for 3 days. Same as the last Krazy Karaoke Call –well, enough leftover for 2 days only but it was supposed to be only heavy pupu and snacks for an 8:00 PM party 😐

But first….
😆 😀 😆
THE BIG KARAOKE CALL
Saturday – August 16, 2008
Krazy Karaoke 8:00 PM – 12:00 midnight (minimum)

The large room at the Young Street Krazy Karaoke holds at least 55 persons. STRETCH has made the reservation and put down the deposits.

Same arrangement as last April 19’s Krazy Karaoke Call

• bring your own drinks (this room has a lot more cooler space)
• bring snacks and pupu’s (optional)
• $15 per person to cover room rental/karaoke
• pay Stretch or designee at the door that night

Current RSVP Count = 46

RSVP on blog or email SteveM — stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

Rob25,

LOL, yeah the “homer” said 12-0 could not be done last season, but at the same token, at least BC didn’t go off on a rant about how the team was “exposed” on the road against LaTech last season and how the boys were believing their own hype..yadda yadda yadda….

Ok that’s enuff of focusing in on “whatshisface”.

288. ryan August 6, 2008 3:34 pm

292. (Jesse) James August 6, 2008 3:44 pm

Kazz…

You are sooo right about “Bling Faith” vs. belief. I was always a believer in the attitude, “On any given Saturday (or Sunday)”. If things went right and plans fell into place, with heart and talent, games could be won. There is something to be said about heart. Yes, all heart and no talent can’t win games no matter how hard you try or how much you want to win. But the reverse is also true, I’ve seen teams with some of the best talent out there finish with mediocre seasons because they didn’t have heart…no love for the game itself and no teamwork mentality. There needs to be a balance between those two ideals. I think Hawaii has that. What we may lack in size, speed, or talent, we make up for in heart….it just all needs to be put together.

And like you said, if we lose, we lose. We just move on and fight another day….one snap and clear right?

293. Rob25 August 6, 2008 3:45 pm

Hi Koakane…getting ready to go to practice soon.

Kazz – On last thing…it was kinda funny to hear BC say how Mike McCartney (sp) is being an egomaniac because he’s positive his system will work with anyone when that’s basically JJ’s belief and BC kept saying that all the time. Yadda, yadda his system works against anyone just gotta tweak it sometimes. It gets so bad on Wednesday sometimes that I have to turn on my Ipod and not listen to the radio.

What’s with all the injuries to Florida?

294. homey ⑤ August 6, 2008 3:48 pm

303. whitey August 6, 2008 4:29 pm

Good afternoon Tsaikos. this info is for our southern cal tsaikos. United airlines is running a special from LAX to most of their destinations. The tickets need to be purchased by Aug 8th. Saw LAX/SFO is $55 ea way, LAX/Orlando is $379 round trip in Sept. You need to go to united.com for more info.

And to add salt to the wound, Hawaiian charges $250 round trip from Kahului/Honolulu. Sheeeeeesssshhhhh!! Who they trying to kid??

oooh!
we just got new HD channels on Oceanic! they’re getting ready for the Olympics! go check it out when you go home.

307. whitey August 6, 2008 4:41 pm

and i forgot, Hawaiian puts kerosene in with the salt when you fly with them inter-island, $25 for the 2nd bag (round trip is $50), the after Sept, $17 for the 1st bag and $25 for the 2nd when flying to the mainland. you end up paying $84 extra on top of the the high cost of flying with them. But putting salt, kerosene in your wound is nothing because they also added arsenic by asking you to write to Congress to complain about the hight fuel cost. You ask for help, charge more for the airfare, add baggage charges, and make it more costly to use your miles, either you think that the people are your friend and that is the way to do business in Hawaii or we are stupid!! Answer is none of the above as Hawaiian management has no concept about how people care and share in Hawaii.

308. Pauoa Boy August 6, 2008 4:42 pm

IGNORE THIS POST IF YOU DON’T GIVE A CHIT!!!

It’s time to start looking toward 2009 and California will be stocked with top prospects, especially at quarterback. Here is an early look at the top prospects from the Golden State…we already got 2 of them so far…

QUARTERBACKS
This is easily the best and deepest group of quarterbacks in years. Barkley, who’s committed to USC, is the top prospect nationally, regardless of position, but the race for #2 will be tight. Nunes, Brehaut, Evans and Forcier all have been longtime prospects. NorCal will have a strong group of passers, one of their best in a while, with Jensen, Southwick and Carta-Samuels leading the list.

Matt Barkley, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
Josh Nunes, Upland (Calif.)
Tate Forcier, San Diego (Calif.) Scripps Ranch
Jamie Jensen, Gilroy (Calif.)
Richard Brehaut, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos
Allan Bridgford, Mission Viejo (Calif.)
Joe Southwick, Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley
Austyn Carta-Samuels, San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep
Clark Evans, Los Alamitos (Calif.)
Cody Vaz, Stockton (Calif.) St. Mary’s
Jordan Wynn, Oceanside (Calif.)
Max Yago, Walnut Creek (Calif.) Las Lomas
Joey Levine, Concord (Calif.) Clayton Valley
Sean Berman, North Hollywood (Calif.) Harvard-Westlake
Robb Post, Stockton (Calif.) Lincoln
Cory Nielsen, Cerritos (Calif.) Gahr
Kane Wilson, Placentia (Calif.) El Dorado
Ken Johnston, Carmel (Calif.)
Andrew Pulsipher, Temecula Valley (Calif.)
Sean Schroeder, Dana Point (Calif.) Dana Hills
Tanner Rust, Lakeside (Calif.) El Capitan
Colton Morrison, Oceanside (Calif.) El Camino
Lyle Negron, Murrieta Valley (Calif.)
Cameron Deen, Covina (Calif.) South Hills
Dex Lucci, Beverly Hills (Calif.)
Josh Moten, Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne
Morgan Fennell, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly
Quincy Durgin, Inglewood (Calif.)
Dasmen Stewart, Oxnard (Calif.)
Desi Rodriguez, Saugus (Calif.)

RUNNING BACKS
Wood was the top running back from the junior class in California and is the top running back prospect in the West for the 2009 class, giving Ventura County a stranglehold on the position the last decade. Brown is another top prospect from that area. Gaffney is the best from San Diego while Yarnway will be one of NorCal’s finest.

Cierre Wood, Oxnard (Calif.) Santa Clara
Chris Brown, Newbury Park (Calif.)
Tyler Gaffney, San Diego (Calif.) Cathedral Catholic
Dasarte Yarnway, San Francisco (Calif.) Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep
Melvin Richardson, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly
Demareya Nelson, Stockton (Calif.) Lincoln
Travon Van, La Mesa (Calif.) Helix
Antonio Bray, Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany
Marcus Darden, Compton (Calif.) Dominguez
Ryan Zirbel, Saugus (Calif.)

Jon Lister, Thousand Oaks (Calif.)
Cameron Loeffler, Exeter (Calif.)
Nick Ricciardulli, Poway (Calif.)
Marcus McDaniel, Sacramento (Calif.) Christian Brothers
Sam McCowan, Oxnard (Calif.)
Arby Fields, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos

RECEIVERS
Jefferson is the best receiver prospect from the West and will be a national recruit. Flournoy, a commit to USC, had a huge junior season, as did fellow Trojan commit Carroll. Jackson and Roberts could also play on defense. Evans is this year’s Kemonte Bateman, using the B2G before his junior year to explode onto the scene.

Rolando Jefferson, Fresno (Calif.) Edison
Devon Flournoy, Van Nuys (Calif.) Birmingham
Shaquelle Evans, Inglewood (Calif.)
Jemari Roberts, Long Beach (Calif.) Wilson
Diante Jackson, Walnut Creek (Calif.) Las Lomas
James Johnson, Escondido (Calif.) Valley Center
Randall Carroll, Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral
Jeffrey Taylor, Montebello (Calif.) Cantwell Sacred Heart
Rashaun Schaefer, Fresno (Calif.) Edison
Byron Moore, Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne
Kevin Cummings, Encino (Calif.) Crespi
Brett Thompson, El Dorado Hills (Calif.) Oak Ridge
James Flynn, Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame
Chris Albright, Milpitas (Calif.)
Drew Gibson, Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure
Kevin Chandler, Mission Viejo (Calif.)
Brian Owusu, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian

Spencer Hagan, Sacramento (Calif.) Capital Christian
Terrence Miller, Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde
Jeff Crissman, Huntington Beach (Calif.) Edison
Deondre Powell, Cerritos (Calif.) Gahr

TIGHT ENDS
Presley is already committed to USC, and Toilolo has a handful of offers, including from Florida, Stanford and Cal. Barnett is a physical specimen.

Morrell Presley, Carson (Calif.)
Levine Toilolo, La Mesa (Calif.) Helix
Zach Ertz, Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista
Marlon Barnett, Corona (Calif.) Santiago
Trevor Peterson, Placerville (Calif.) El Dorado
Charlie Taylor, Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West
Christopher Coyle, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian
Evan Wolff, Clovis (Calif.)

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
Graf is off the market, with the Trojan legacy committed to USC. Danser, Born and Benyard are top prospects from NorCal, Central Cali and San Diego respectively.

Tackles
Kevin Graf, Agoura (Calif.)
David Born, Bakersfield (Calif.) West
Everett Benyard, San Diego (Calif.) Central Catholic
Kevin Danser, San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep

whitey — some of us will really hurt if the airlines imposed a passenger excess weight surcharge. Like $1 per pound over the base 150. ooops–better not give ’em ideas 🙁

314. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 6, 2008 5:05 pm

Hi Mav, I went to the Dr. this AM. She said FLU and gave me Tamiflu (puts me to sleep), ibuprofen for body aches (considerable) and a week off from work to rest. Dunno if I want to take a whole week but depends on how I feel. She said going back too early is a recipe for a relapse.

I’m sleeping, eating chx soup and checking the blogs a little…
Sleeping is good!

Mahalo for your kind thoughts and prayers!

315. whitey August 6, 2008 5:12 pm

people not flying because of all the additional cost is starting to catch up with the airline and believe it or not, you can fly to Portland to watch the UH game on Sept 6th about the same fare as stretch paid back in february, $360 plus all the service and baggage charge from Honolulu. somehow the high fuel cost is not applicable to Portland fliights. hahahahahaaaaaaahhhhh!!!

316. whitey August 6, 2008 5:22 pm

PB, thanks for the info on this year’s players. saw one name of interest, Mailiu Penitani. He related to the yokokuzana in sumo??

SteveM, i would not rule out that it is being considered. they got rid of movies, meals, magazines, bags, etc.

al, since get plenty room on HA, you and mrs going to the oregon state game? forgot to mention that airlines are like the dark side merchants. TAKE, TAKE, TAKE until broke!!! LOL!!!

318. Pauoa Boy August 6, 2008 5:32 pm

whitey – I’ve been trying to get into contact with some of the local high schools in the area about there football programs. Couple weeks ago we had Colt Brennan’s school Mater Dei High come to base to hold a clinic for the military kids, they come often and are affiliated in a Marines for Monarchs program. Spoke with one of the coaches who coached Colt and asked if he could put in a good word to send more of his high profile players to Hawaii! Also, live right across the street from Vista Murrieta High, very big school, super nice facilities, and football field. Watched some of the football players working out on there own and chatted with a few. Excellent football team one of the up and coming programs in SoCal since they’ve only been playing since 2003. Went 11-1 in 2006 and 2007.

no wonder i just heard this big scream from the manoa practice field that sounded like our blog host, when carry all the way to the cool central plains 🙂

330. Pauoa Boy August 6, 2008 6:16 pm

The thing with Hytche though was that he was inconsistent running the ball last year, had some big games then dissapeared in others. I guess with Barkley though they threw the ball more. If they give him the ball more he could develop into a really good d1 back have to wait until after the season to make fair judgement on him…

334. Pauoa Boy August 6, 2008 6:26 pm

A good running back that I like from the San Diego area is Tyler Gaffney. He’s big and very fast 6’1″ 215lbs. 4.4s 40yd. ran for over 1,500 yds. and had 29 TD’s on the season. Being heavily recruited by Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Stanford, Utah, SD State. This kid is a beast…

A personal commentary from A-House:

Today, several prominent/contributing members of this blog chose to initiate and continue a dialouge which, in my opinion, to be crude, inappropriate and perhaps offensive to some readers.

I honor and respect their constitutional right of free speech.

But, did it bring honor, respect, or integrity to the founder of The Warrior Beat or this blog? You be the judge.

Many youngsters leaving home for college or the military in the past and present may have heard a/their parent(s) say, “what ever you do, do not bring shame to our family”. Until I pass, I will do everything to honor my late Mother’s request.

344. pepeekeoho August 6, 2008 7:48 pm

345. Kelli August 6, 2008 7:55 pm

I’m sorry… I can’t resist. I have to tell you guys about how “out of it” some people are — so out of it that it’s kinda funny.

Towards the end of last season when all the BCS talk was going on, I told one of my very good friends (so don’t tease him too much) that I got to interview CB for the school paper. His reply: “Oh yeah, I’ve heard of him. He’s supposed to be pretty good or something, yeah?” I was about to cry.

I’ve also recently discovered that someone else doesn’t know who Bobby Curran is. I was in total shock!

Ok, that’s it. I’m done.

346. Jack Flash August 6, 2008 8:01 pm

A-House – I’ve been told that one before- No Shame My Name! Gotta respect that. As for the posts, I personally wasn’t offended by the content. Public forums can tend to stray sometimes. But, it sure was tiring skipping over all that stuff!

347. Pride. August 6, 2008 8:13 pm

Who’s Bobby Curran?

348. chawan_cut August 6, 2008 8:24 pm

kelli,
did you really get to interview CB? cool! hope you have that print saved and framed!

349. Garret (San Jose) August 6, 2008 8:25 pm

SteveM,

After many exchanges of e-mails, it appears that I cannot set up another Cattle Call in the Bay Area in addition to the Saturday one. However, 808chef is trying to adjust his work schedule so that he can join us at the Palace BBQ! I do not think he would have been able to make it to San Bruno, but Sunnyvale is close enough to where he works that he might be able to make it back to work in time.

And I’m going to call for a huge Tsaiko tailgate for the SJSU game in 2009, with help from 808chef and others!

350. Garret (San Jose) August 6, 2008 8:28 pm

Dolphins news from the Sun-Sentinel.

WR Davone Bess is the one receiver who consistently finds seams downfield. For that alone, he needs to make this team.

Give Reagan Mauia credit. He’s working hard on trying to improve his ball-catching skills by working on it after practice. He’s had ‘manos de piedra’ all camp so far.

351. Garret (San Jose) August 6, 2008 8:30 pm

Miami’s coach talked about their FB situation and seemed to already be identifying which FB would be making the team. Reagan isn’t mentioned by him at all.

(On what he’s liked in Boomer Grigsby so far in training camp) — “What I like about Boomer so far in camp is he has a physical presence to what we’re doing on offense. He’s really an intelligent guy for a guy that started out on the defensive side of the ball and has had as limited experience that he’s had on the offensive side of the ball. He brings a little bit of a physical presence there, he’s a big, strong guy. I like what I’ve seen so far with him catching the ball out of the backfield. Even in some run situations he’s proven to run the ball okay for what we’ve asked him to do there. I’m very curious; somebody asked this question yesterday about what I’m curious about seeing. I can’t wait to see him on special teams at some point on Saturday. That seems to be something that he gets excited about and I’m kind of anxious to watch him play it.”

(On what is his priority on the fullback position) — “I think that the fullback has to be a special teams player. In my mind, the special teams thing is a priority. Obviously, blocking is the most important thing. I read somewhere where Boomer made a comment saying, ‘They didn’t bring me here to catch a lot of passes or to run the ball, they brought me here to clear holes for Ronnie.’ He’s right. Those guys will catch the ball out of the backfield; they will do some of those things. At the end of the day, what he really needs to concentrate on is he needs to be able to block the ‘Mike’ linebacker or the ‘Jack’ linebacker or any of those players.

352. d1島: August 6, 2008 8:30 pm

ryan,

Looks like more definitive news about Corneliu Ingram’s knee won’t be known until tomorrow.

Florida senior Cornelius Ingram, one of the country’s best tight ends, missed Wednesday’s practice with a strained knee, Coach Urban Meyer said.

Meyer said he expected to know the results from Ingram’s MRI by late Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Ingram apparently injured the knee during one-on-drills on Tuesday.

“I don’t know much more than that,” said Meyer, who believed Ingram injured his left knee.

When asked if there is any indication if the injury is serious, Meyer said “not now, no.” The Sentinel left a message with Gwen, Ingram’s mother.

A strain suggests the knee is not torn, which could reduce the recovery time to weeks. A knee strain causes pain, swelling and difficulty in walking, according to medical web sites.

353. Garret (San Jose) August 6, 2008 8:32 pm

Now stuff from the Palm Beach Post. This is from a blog about the practice today.

Davone Bess, who has some of the best hands on the team, made an over-the-shoulder grab in the corner, where he had to adjust to pass by John Beck, who threw it over the wrong shoulder.

FB Reagan Mauia continues his struggles, getting tossed to the ground by LB Edmond Miles and whiffing on Anderson. Mauia, who has dropped a bunch of balls in recent days, needs to pick it up.

Real nice catch from Davone Bess from McCown for a touchdown, over Joey Thomas.

354. d1島: August 6, 2008 8:32 pm

With regard to Rainey, this writer is downplaying the groin injury and suggesting that he’ll be back soon.

Redshirt freshman running back Chris Rainey suffered a groin injury from running track. Rainey missed most of Wednesday’s drills, but he ran off the practice field and should be ready to go soon.

355. whitey August 6, 2008 8:33 pm

watching ESPN, you think that Favre died or something. all they talk about is favre this, favre that. what is the news, all he did was go from GB to NY and they haven’t won any games this season.

356. Garret (San Jose) August 6, 2008 8:33 pm

Fullback Reagan Mauia dropped another pass in the flat Wednesday, giving him roughly a half-dozen drops in the past few days.

Sparano doesn’t have an answer, but said extra time working with the quarterbacks or catching the ball from the pitching machine could help.

“But at the end of the day, it’s throwing and catching,” he said.

357. d1島: August 6, 2008 8:35 pm

Well Coach Meyer shows some “flexibility” in the way he schedules practice based on output. Practice today went an extra hour because the defense wasn’t performing well.

Sophomore defensive end Justin Trattou missed practice with the flu but is expected to return today. Freshman defensive tackle Omar Hunter is limited in contact drills because of a back injury. Apparently Meyer wasn’t impressed with anybody from his defense on Wednesday, saying they weren’t flying to the ball like Brandon Siler and Ray McDonald used to. That must explain why practice went an hour longer than the scheduled 6:20 p.m. ending.

358. Garret (San Jose) August 6, 2008 8:38 pm

North Carolina used the wrong rules and incorrectly declared a football player ineligible! Their compliance people could have messed up this player’s life, as he’s now practicing with Valdosta State and has no guarantees for his athletic or academic future now.

Burlington Cummings standout Dwight Jones, who is currently enrolled at Valdosta State. Jones was supposed to be playing Division I football with North Carolina as part of the 2007 recruiting class, but was declared ineligible by the school. Despite a stint at Hargrave Academy, the wideout was again declared ineligible and transferred to Valdosta State in Division II. Case closed.

Or is it? According to InsideCarolina.com, Jones was judged under the wrong NCAA clearing house rules. The heart of the problem was the amount of core classes Jones took his senior year, which was 14. The requirement was bumped up to 16 for the 2008 class. For some reason, Jones was judged by UNC under the 2008 rules despite being a 2007 recruit. Whoops. Jones is already practicing for Valdosta State, which would pose a problem for his original desire to wear Carolina blue, but the school signed a release allowing the Heels to talk to him. Bottomline, Jones will need assurances from the NCAA that UNC’s new interpretation is correct and that he won’t be penalized for showing up in Chapel Hill having already enrolled at Valdosta.

NC State dealt with similar eligibility mix up with recruit William Beasley. Tom O’Brien announced earlier that Beasley didn’t make it academically, although it was “discovered” that the paperwork hadn’t been handled properly. End result? Beasley was eligible after all.

359. d1島: August 6, 2008 8:38 pm

LB Brandon Spikes didn’t take long to impress this incoming freshman.

Freshman linebacker Brendan Beal didn’t need to be on campus long before making a bold prediction about fellow linebacker Brandon Spikes.
“Seeing what he’s going to be in the future, he’s probably going to be a first rounder this year,” Beal said. “Just to see the way he works is unbelievable.”
Spikes, a junior, recorded a team-high 131 tackles last season.

360. d1島: August 6, 2008 8:39 pm

Still no clear cut favorite at RB for the Geckos.

Running back Mon Williams said he expects all the running backs to get time this season. Don’t be surprised if Williams, highly touted out of high school before injuries, becomes an pivotal part of the offense.

361. Kelli August 6, 2008 8:41 pm

chawan_cut: Yes, I did. I got to meet him, RGM and the guys who wrote and choreographed the ha’a. Um, should I say this? Yeah, I will… CB and RGM autographed a lot of stuff for me. Since CB was a communications major and I think RGM was too, we actually had the same professor, but no classes together. There was one student who was in their class and my journalism class, but I remember her asking who CB was early in the season. LOL. Anyway, the professor recently retired, but she really helped me to get my interviews for the story, which turned out to be a final project thing for me. All the guys were really nice. Not to mention I attended one practice and got to see classmate Ralph Ieru from McKinley.

ST was nice enough to post the story link on the blog last fall, but it’s still alive if you’re interested. This isn’t my greatest, but it was definitely one of the coolest stories that I got to write.

is there another reciever coming to hawaii via texas. Just saw something interesting from rivals today. ‘Alex Tweedy’ from Woodlands High is Texas.

I received a tip this morning that Alex Tweedy, a wide receiver from The Woodlands had committed to UNT. I went down this road a few weeks back, but called him back again to see if he had made up his mind.

I just got off the phone and Tweedy said that he has not committed to UNT.

As a matter of fact, he just picked up an offer from Hawaii today.

Tweedy said he would be narrowing down his options in the next few weeks, but as of now he has been offered by UNT, Hawaii, Air Force, Army and South Dakota State.

UNT still has four players who have committed thus far: WR Daniel Mayberry, OL Keenan Flax, CB Hilbert Jackson and DE Ryan Boutwell.

Mayberry’s coaches at Dallas Spruce said UNT’s coaches told them that they are only going to take one wide receiver in this class.

364. d1島: August 6, 2008 8:51 pm

My observations from practice today.

If UH is going to “take advantage” of the alleged shortcomings in the secondary of the Geckos, the balls need to get there quicker.
Saw back-to-back plays in eleven’s that would have cost the team two of their top three slots in a real game; the receivers can’t expect the ball placement to always be where it will protect them when they catch it. (UH had a real special guy throwing the ball last year in that regard.)
Pass pro can improve; incl. from the RB position.
Defense is ahead of the offense; but that is no shocker to anyone.
The team is ready to go full pads already; they wanna hit, better to do it with protection.

Nice article about Wes Suan. I didn’t realize just how far back his link to JJ went.

When Suan was a freshman running back at Linfield College in tiny McMinnville, Ore., he was introduced to a local hotshot high school quarterback named June Jones, with whom he quickly became good friends.

“June was the best golfer in our group of friends, and I was the worst,” Suan said. “So when we went out to play, he and I got paired up a lot.”

USA loses to Denmark 2-0, Hope Solo was in the goal…maybe she still has her foot in her mouth after blasting her prior coach for playing Scurry as she remarked that she would have made the saves against the Brazilians.. Bachi big time…

375. Kekoa August 6, 2008 9:31 pm

A-House ~

I admire your quiet and courageous stand made to right the blog ship. I myself was remiss for not stepping forward to curb the direction the email ‘conversations’ were headed. Remaining silent was not being very responsible, and for that I apologize.

I hope we all think more highly of our fellow male or female Tsai-ko’s and be more sensitive to their feelings. After all, it is about preserving our unprecedented fellowship. I think we all know where that fine line must be drawn. Let’s all pledge to take the high road and remain on the ‘right’ side of it.

376. Kekoa August 6, 2008 9:55 pm

Kelli ~

RE: #362

I remember reading the article and thinking. Whoa?…Ha’a!…Thanks for educating the fans in your very well researched story. As a Kanaka Maole, well known for residing out here on the ceded lands of the Wessai, I’m very happy to see a young lady of Asian descent take exception to all things Hawaiian.

I’m looking forward to meeting you at the K-call on the 16th. Maybe you can help me and The Punch Bowl Menehune re-write an all Hawaiian cheer for the Warriors.

377. Stephen Tsai August 6, 2008 9:59 pm

Well, despite the encouragement, I opted not to take a picture of the tree.

378. d1島: August 6, 2008 10:12 pm

Was that the result of an “arbor-ous” deliberation?

379. addahknowjoe August 6, 2008 10:20 pm

more like an executive “branch” decision

380. Kelli August 6, 2008 10:27 pm

chawan_cut and mp: Thanks! Hopefully greater stories are coming as I return to Ka Leo for the fall. Most of my classmates from the journalism program are on the news desk, so I didn’t have any sports stories last semester and it seems like that’s where I’m headed again. The new news editor already e-mailed me an assignment. Just dandy! I think she’s trying to get ready for the semester, which is actually pretty smart.

Kekoa: Thank you. Living in Hawaii and being a reporter provides an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the different cultures. The ha’a is such a unique part of the team and I’m with Dr. Kanalu Young’s take on it — he told me how proud he was of the players for sharing the Hawaiian culture with the rest of the team.

381. Vanessa August 6, 2008 10:34 pm

Thanks hawaiianbod! We’ll try to make it to the morning practice on Saturday.

djmitcho,
I like that card because it has RGM in his UH uniform. But the Donruss Threads card is autographed. I’m hoping to pick up one of the Donruss Threads cards for cheap. Jason Rivers also has an autographed Donruss Threads card in a Titans uniform.

383. al August 6, 2008 10:46 pm

guys….seriously don’t get all caught up with the injuries coming out of florida. an elite program like florida is not only 2 deep at every position but 3-4 deep as a matter of fact.

their annual recruits list 3,4, and many a five star athlete. programs so well established as florida have more talent than they really should have and/or need.

our team just needs to focus on perfecting what we do and how we do it. the coaches will craft a game plan that gives us the best chance to win. thats what we can hope for, sending our team as best prepared as possible and hopefully we will outsmart and out hustle them. we need to be as focused as we can. that is how we will beat them.

…nuff said

Finally back home from a long day. Did a lot of driving. Lessee, Kailua to Hawaii Kai to Pearlridge to Wahiawa/Haleiwa/Waimea to Kapahulu to Kahala to Hawaii Kai and finally home to Kailua. Had a great time. Recommend parasailing to everyone not afraid of heights.

bhf2 – Lyn is my cuz on my mom’s side. Her mom & my grandpa were siblings.

OK, Boots and Kimos tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

Link from Tombo Ahi: http://chriscooley47.blogspot.com/2008/08/20-questions-colt-brennan-and-boozie.html

Good morning Tsaikos!

Ralph,
I don’t think sirius is available in Hawaii based on the current satellite footprint. Click on my name for link. I think they will be putting up more satellites in the future to possibly expand the footprint.

390. Kekoa August 7, 2008 1:24 am

99club ~ Good Morning!…Sirius doesn’t seem interested in expanding their footprint. Coverage by their ‘birds’ are ’bout the same as about 5 years ago.

I guess we gotta depend on scrambling around the internet finding backdoors and such to find the games ignored by the media. Otherwise, it’s the expensive packages from the cable companies.

At least we’ll be able to watch the Gators get flushed down their own swamp rat hole while enjoying a local style breakfast at Genji’s on the 30th!

391. Ralph August 7, 2008 1:38 am

On the 30th I hope ST post a new thread by 3 am HST…after reading the HA morning issue and the thread all I need is a few east coast guys up to keep me going for a couple hours then I can helle on to Genji, don’t need to sleep the hype and adrenaline will be enough…

392. Ralph August 7, 2008 1:40 am

if Hiflyer and PB’s brother get off late friday night or early saturday morning we can chat before heading out to Genji’s.

yu right, your name, respect it. i’m assuming da chastise wuz da yakkin about da inu wendo an da vulgarahtee wit da tree, an references to …. 😀
so i goin lightin yu up in a nice way. akchally when i got home from practice an was catchin up wit yu guyz, my dark side, an nite time i get plenny dark sides 😀 wuz tinkin about dat sik huumah an my vishun went to da old Saturday Post poster i got somewhere downstairs – wit da runner on first base lookin at da pitcha an gettin ready fo leave da bag an steal second, an da first baseman standin dare wit his gloved right hand hanging, him whistlin, got his left hand holdin da ball on his left hip but hiding it from da runner, and he pretendin to look in da direkshun ah da pitcha but akchally his eyes slanted down towards da head ah da runnah, da pitcha akkin like he gettin ready fo windup (but he no mo ball, which is why i taut of da pitcha in da first place as i was readin da thread today). classic funny da postah. an i wouldn’t have thought about all dat if my funny bone wasn’t …. you get the idea. 😀
AHouse, wat yu tink, summa da braddas neva take Communication at UH? 😀 Me tooo… 😆

d1Shima,

regarding the slow connections you saw today, what you figah?
akchally, dats da vibes i get all day way ovah heeah in Hilo, jus
watchin da tv reruns ah da guyz throwin.

imo, da sweepin runnin qb is Inoke. da mo accurate throwin qb is inoke. but da fastah passin/delivery qb is alexandah. is dat wat yu tinkin too?

i’m also tinkin dat to get da runnahs outta da backfield an into a pass catchin situation, da oline gotta hold fo mo time. u tinkin day can do dat job?

an i’m tinkin about your comment “all State” to “all Stare,” for at least one ah da braddaz, gotta clear up da legal pikcha first, no like drag down da team. This is the best that can be done right now because when/if the trial thing heats up, its gonna heat up. This keeps it clean for the team all the while the action lets the young men know that the coaches still support them. The maxim “timing is everything” is so true! They’ll get their chances. Gotta take care of the past things first.

I was planning on going yesterday, wednesday, but i had a slow start and decided to pass on it…might check it out today at 4 pm if someone gives me a heads up whether the 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 is worth the effort of driving in traffic. but next Wednesday for sure, practice in pads, real action

402. Ralph August 7, 2008 3:17 am

the georgia DE played for the Colts last week, never touched Colt…to be successful our o line got to produce for us to score, and we will score, but the question is how many points can be score with the starting o line with the 3 amigos from last season in place. All we need is one more point than Florida then you take out your banana and whip out all over Gainesville.

403. Ralph August 7, 2008 3:22 am

You got to post earlier to catch D1shima, he goes to bed before more senioir citizens – around 11….

404. Ralph August 7, 2008 3:23 am

oops before most senior citizens…must be late

405. bighilofan2 August 7, 2008 3:30 am

so the last half hour i was catchin up on today’s odda paypah and the HA and reading about the QBs, their coach and the haps. when a guy comes into town, stands super tall, and loses 20 pounds by extra exercise, with all the hype coming from his last place of business, and then there is this other superhot QB and they’re all getting good press, i’m tinkin that the separation is gonna start now. you’ll see it, the receivers will see it. its how they look off the defenders and how quick the ball gets to the spot, and the cool confidence, that is the separation maker, imo.

So what your saying is that Alexander may be the starting QB?

“I woke up this morning with the feeling that a huge roster move was going to be in the offing. Would the team have made a move for Brett Favre? Probably not — everyone here had been pretty blunt about that. But what about if Favre had gone to Tampa, and Jeff Garcia was available? Or if the Vikings cut Frerotte to make room for Favre, and my old In Gus We Trust shirt was going to become relevant again?

So when I got into Redskins Park today and saw a note on my computer, I was completely unsurprised. I knew by then that Favre had gone to the Jets and that the Jets were planning to release Pennington, so I figured that the Skins had decided to add an experienced West Coast QB to heighten competition at the backup spots.

Not exactly, but almost as exciting: “We signed free agent safety Justin Hamilton and released FB/TE Pete Schmitt.” A huge roster move indeed.”

Interesting. I keep forgetting that this is the NFL and you can be gone at any moment.

Redskins Report (humor)
Following up on Chris Cooley’s video interview of Colt and roomey yesterday, Clinton Portis got the next set of viewer questions:

http://chriscooley47.blogspot.com/

“One of the 20 questions was a celebrity offense. I looked no further than Clinton Portis to field this question. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

QB – Uncle Rico
FB – Mr. T. (Actually looks like our current fullback)
RB – Kung Fu Joe (Clinton choose him to fill his shoes)
TE – The Joker
WR – Forest Gump
WR – Sam Rockwell (Actually his character in The Green Mile)
T – Dewey Cox
G – Shrek
C – Rambo
G – The Terminator
T – Hightower (From Police Academy and did play in the NFL)”

Getting a sense of what to expect from the next Redskins preseason game. Bad for the WR (injuries) corps but good for the rookies – including Colt!

BTW- NFL Network is broadcasting the preseason games. That’s good news for satellite customers (I have Dish)!

Pomai- I’ve been sleeping since about 8pm and just got up to eat and take meds.

413. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 7, 2008 4:30 am

This is what I’ve been waiting for- how the starters see Colt. Here’s Fred Smoot.

http://homermcfanboy.blogspot.com/2008/08/according-to-fred.html
We’ll here’s your chance to get even. Tell me how the rookie head coach did in his debut.

“He did well,” said Smoot, declining to fire back at Jim Zorn for selling him out on the conditioning test. “He did well. He showed you a few things out there. The thing about it, I think he did a great job – especially with him being an offensive guru. Come on, I think our quarterbacks probably missed four or five passes out there today, man. Every one of them that got in looked like they’d been there before, even Colt Brennan. It’s his first game and he looked real well. We gotta catch up with the offense. They’re looking real good. On defense, we gotta make sure we ain’t the ones losing games.”

That’s not really something fans should spend too much time worrying about. The ‘Skins defense finished in the top 10 last year, and the addition of Jason “McDreamy” Taylor, as well as players like Carlos Rogers and Rocky McIntosh getting healthy in time for the start of season would suggest the defense has all the tools to be just as dominant in 2008.

Colt -vs- Brett?
Redskins Aug 16 @ Jets 7pm ET Comcast/ WUSA
http://www.washingtontimes.com/weblogs/redskins/2008/Aug/07/favre/

“WOW. The meaningless preseason game a week from Saturday at the Jets suddently turned into a mega-media event with the trade late last night of superstar QB Brett Favre from Green Bay to New York. It’s doubtful that the Hall of Fame lock will play after less than a week of practice with his new team, but the game will be the Jets’ first at home since the trade and Gang Green will surely be out in full force to roar its approval of its new hero. Favre will be 39 in October, but he gives Jets fans hope that their team, 4-12 last year, can be a contender again. New York won just three playoff games the past 21 seasons, but Favre’s acquisition summons memories of the glorious 1968 season when Joe Namath and the Jets ruled the football world.”

Then there’s gigi:

418. d1島 August 7, 2008 5:56 am

Great Morning All!

Ralph,

Eh you buggah! Take it EEZY widda Senior references; I still pay full price at McDonald’s!

bhf2,

I think it wouldn’t be a bad thing if the JC guys learned the offense sooner than later.
As far as the two freshman, BOTH of them are on the team. As I remarked to the parents of one of them, they just starting all over again now and that means doing plenny watching for now. A year ago they were getting most of the reps; that day will come again for both of ’em.

419. d1島 August 7, 2008 6:08 am

btw, I haven’t quoted the stuff about the Geckos’ players’ legal woes but to see the things that Urban Meyer is contending with gives some perspective to the issue that bhf2 made reference to earlier.

Instead of an off-field suspension for his recent open-container citation, Maurkice Pouncey had to deal with on-field disciplinary action Monday. “They got me running after practice,” Pouncey said. “I’ll go as long as they want it to be.”
Pouncey had an open container of Natural Lite in a 2006 silver Chevy sedan that was pulled over on July 20 for driving without a tag, according to Alachua County records. Pouncey paid the $94 citation three days later, and the case was closed.

…and then there’s this gem.

As expected, among the walk-ons present was troubled Ronnie Wilson, who worked out with Florida’s defensive line. Wilson missed all of last season while serving a two-year probation sentence after pleading no contest to one count of battery and one count of discharging a firearm in public, both misdemeanors, stemming from an April 2007 arrest.
Wilson fired an AK-47 into the air to scare a man after a fight outside a night club, according to the police report. UF coach Urban Meyer suspended him for a year following his arrest, and the sentencing in August made his future as an athlete and student in Gainesville more uncertain.

I won’t spend the time looking up all the issues that Mark Richt had to deal with this past off-season….
’nuff sed

420. FloridaTed August 7, 2008 6:11 am

Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister,

Great reporting from camp.

Sofar it’s going about as well as I’ve expected. I have full confidence that we’ll be as ready as can be for the opener.

Have a great day everybody.

421. d1島 August 7, 2008 6:17 am

al,

I realize that the Geckos are very deep at all positions. If you look at the blog site I am pulling the stuff from, these are the noteworthy items that the Orlando Sentinel writer has chosen. Injuries are something that are focused on by THEIR writer as significant news items. I’m just relaying the info.
UH going be lining up against eleven 3,4 and 5 star athletes in all phases of the game; maybe it’s significant to note which ones have D1 experience and which ones only played against 16 and 17 year-olds, maybe not?

422. d1島 August 7, 2008 6:20 am

LizK,
Hopefully by this time you went back to bed. If not….wea da slippah!?!? haha

Have one awesome day everybody. Pray I don’t fall into da bay….I going sink like one stone.

427. FloridaTed August 7, 2008 7:29 am

d1shima,

When you look a little closer, even with homer eyes, you can see that we also have quite a number of 3 and 4 star athletes, if fairly assessed.

But it is one thing to be a 5 star athlete as a freshman with no experience, vs a 3 star senior with four years of starting. I’ll take the latter anytime.

Sure the Gators have a lot of talent, but so have we. We have no reason at all to be intimidated.

428. Koauka August 7, 2008 7:34 am

Football is played on the gridiron.

Time to play the Gators!

429. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 7, 2008 7:45 am

Looks like Colt’s bottom is better…

http://theredskinsblog.com/

“Colt Brennan completed a nice long arcing pass over the defense to Anthony Mix on his first snap in 7-On-7 drills.

The pass rush looked very strong in today’s practice, and there have been times where Carter and Taylor together have looked dominating. Both first- and second-team offenses came up short in two minute drills, largely because of the aggressive defense, but it was interesting to watch Coach Zorn get with the quarterbacks after every play.

The quarterbacks and equipment guys finished the day trying to hit the crossbar from about 20 yards away. How’d it go? “Everyone missed,”says Todd Collins. A minute later, Derek Devine leaves the field. “Got one on the last try,” he says with a smile. “Just gotta keep trying.” Assistant equipment manager Anders Beutel backs him up. “Yeah, he got one, but everyone else was gone.” Nevertheless, Jason Campbell remains skeptical. “We have no proof,” he says. But Anders backed him up. “Oh, Anders backed him up? Probably paid him off.””

430. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 7, 2008 7:47 am

Oh Yeah,
ALOHA KAKAHIAKA!

Nobody believes Hawaii will win. That’s a good thing. Keep thinking like that. Take us cheap.

First game of the season and we’re gonna shock the nation!

I love it! Bring on the Gator meat! Let the feast commence!

Take care Liz

bhf2 – so is Jerry a lurker? If so, get ’em to post! Pretty good for a guy from Indiana, yeah?

Thanks for the reports from practice. I hope that we’re seeing bigger day-to-day improvement from all units everyday.

Not sure if anyone posted it already, but I just noticed Colt has another entry on the Redskin blog (dated Tuesday Aug 5).

437. Stretch August 7, 2008 8:37 am

Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Watching practice yesterday, the Tsaikos were pretty well represented. It was kind of already mentioned in ST’s article this morning, but it appears that the QB’s need to get comfortable with the live pass rush. They looked like they had some “happy feet” with the dline putting the pressure on. With time, they will get more comfortable and it will also give time for the o-line to get used to working along side each other. We don’t have much time but I am confident we’ll be okay by the time Florida rolls around.

Being a kicker & long snapper must be really boring. There was a soccer team practicing on the lower field so they were left to being spectators for most of the practice.

Can’t attend practice today but I hope more progress is made.

438. al August 7, 2008 8:40 am

d1島…..good morning brother.

my comment was not a dig on you. i just wanted others who would get too excited about that kind of stuff not to get overly involved in that kind of hype. i know, you know that no matter what the game is played and won in the trenches.

it is interesting how much information is coming out of gecko land regarding injuries, suspensions, and ak-47’s. all we have had is a-would-be-qb hitting the books and a tweaked leg on our beastly rb.

i do appreciate your reporting of all this stuff.

but, that is a good thing.

perhaps this just reflects the local style mentality to tough out any small kine oweees

439. Rob25 August 7, 2008 11:51 am

Kekoa – I would have to get my picture on this blog everyday to be half the superstar that Nalani is. Maybe I can get all the media to take my pic…they are the only one’s allowed to take pics. Ask WM…better yet, ask Ronnie!
