Aloha means goodbye and hello
According to new Kaiser head coach Cameron Higgins, former UH defensive back Richard Torres will be joining the Cougars as the defensive coordinator and DB coach.
It is a three-part move that should benefit Kaiser, Torres and the Rainbow Warriors.
Kaiser is a getting a one-time, self-made player with coaching experience (as a Kahuku assistant and UH graduate assistant). Torres will be free to pursue job opportunities. And when his term as GA expires this month, Torres will be allowed to work as an independent volunteer with the UH defensive backs.
Torres, who had earned a degree in family resources, returned to Manoa as a graduate-assistant coach the past August. According to his father, Torres decided a few weeks ago to leave the program because: 1) UH did not offer a master’s degree in the counseling field he wished to pursue, and 2) he sought a full-time job to provide for his one-month-old daughter. A GA receives a tuition waiver, textbooks, and a small monthly stipend for what is essentially a full-time job.
Reggie Torres said his son will work a temporary job with the City and County of Honolulu this summer while, it is hoped, tutoring the UH DBs during unsupervised workouts.
“During the summer, if you’re a coach — even a GA — you can’t do anything with them (except during the NCAA-approved workout sessions),” Reggie Torres said. “Now that he’s stepped down, he can help. He really cares about those guys. He doesn’t want to abandon them. But he wants to think about his new baby.”

AL….fault has to go sum where….if Mr. Yee resigns in disgust….after all those years of time n money he spent in the program….I would not question him when he says …’he is tired putting up with the approval n BS one has to go through…with even the simplest of fund-raisers’ …or sumthing to that effect….
Yet the ‘wonder blunder’ happens on admin watch….cost million plus in attorneys fees….
Since Na Koa’s birth…..what has been the total liability that the UHAD…has been saddled with for ne of its actions ? ? And all funds are private….no tax payer funds are involved….seems to me they are better ‘guardians’ of the dollar then admin is….n at least when decisions are made there…their is a name attached 2 it…
I guess there is enough fault to go around for both admin n contractor for the Ching bldg. With the latest suit filed by the contractor….guess the court will be the one to settle it…..
Now, I can understand why, only a handful of workers were on the project. Reading between the lines…..makes no common sense to me….to get a section done…only to be told a month later…to tear it out…..cause a change order was finally approved.
I wished, that the contractor had given the TOTAL number of change orders that were executed by admin….or if they did I missed it. The court will get to the bottom of it…n more attorneys fees will just keep draining the pockets of the taxpayers.

Yea….the host gets paid by his employer….setting him up maybe for a very extra big bonus for all he does….early morning practices n late night coverage of events….not to mention those grueling road trips….
How’s the Gov! He now brings up his support of the Warriors after not hearing about this for two years. But still no clear ideas about how he is going to support the UH athletic programs.

I suppose going to your well-heeled supporters would be a start. Getting HVB (or whatever its now called) would help. Getting a rent-free stadium would help. Getting parking and concession rentals would help.

For the State to move forward, we need to break some political paradigms. One is party affiliation. C&C did away with it. Let the best serve. Senate and House, not needed. Waste money and time. Unicameral system will work for our size.

I’ve coached against Reggie for over 20 in the sport of wrestling and see first hand what he did for the sch. and community. One summer day I hear someone next door cutting down an old mango tree, it’s Reggie and his wrestling boys fundraising and helping the community. LIfe is a journey, Braddah Reggie, best wishes. Richard, good luck in your journey, just ……. be like like your daddy, plenty aloha.
the next time we vote, unless a candidate goes on the record and is part of a movement to abolish the federal reserve and let our country have full control of our money supply, they wont get my vote, and neither should they get any of our votes. on a local level, any politician who wants my vote must have and a support a plan to make silver and gold legal tender as it is written in the constitution…paper money is illegal.

If the Constitution says a State can do this, make gold and silver as legal tender… then let’s get out of paper before paper from the fed goes up in smoke, or at least run a duel money supply of paper and gold and silver coinage…we have a choice. legislators, to get my vote will you protect the people you serve and who may not know any better?

State is in too deep in bed with unions, hence (partly) the red tape on everything. every contractor knows doing a job for the state or fed is more then likely a windfall. i was with a union for a long time and we milked the state while the state “tried” to milk us. in the end lets not forget, when you or i pay a contractor we watch every penny because we feel the cost. no one from the state feels the cost. what’s most important to the state, or at least one thing on their agenda, is to keep getting union endorsements during elections.
I always thought civil service was exactly that, a service… not a career.

The Constitution bans states from printing their own paper money or issuing their own currency. So your idea of printing money is out the window.
While the Constitution allows states to issue gold and/or silver coinage, you have to remember that gold is now around $1,300 or so per oz. Silver, I think, is about $20 per oz.
First: the State has to have the gold/silver to make the coins. If they have the gold/silver, you have to make the coins. Now, it may be cost-effective to make a $20 silver coin but a $1.00 coin, not cost effective at all. Your coins must contain the exact amount of gold or silver simply because it is used in commerce. And another problem is that your Hawaiian gold/silver coin might not be readily accepted in the other states.
Then from a practical point, you will have to carry the coins in your pocket!

IMO, Abercrombie looks like a fool for reaffirming his support for UH athletics. His motives are too obvious. He has burned a lot of people that voted for him. He was a strong advocate for teachers, then screwed them too.
Thankfully, Abercrombie did not turn over Aloha Stadium.

I don’t think he did the state a disservice by not appointing Hanabusa. Regardless of how respected Inouye was/is, he shouldn’t have had the authority to pick his successor. That would have been cronyism at its finest. Not that what Abercrombie did wasn’t the same thing, but at least it was his decision to make. Let the voters decide. We’ll know who deserves it soon enough.

Enjoy reading all of your comments. You are really the true UH fans. Problem as I see it, too many supposedly UH fans are supporters only when the going is good. Guys with money but flash in the pan. I bought season tickets at the termite palace when there wasn’t season tickets and sat on the 50 yard line. I got pushed out at Aloha Stadium twice from the 40 yard line to the 20’s when money guys came ( I’m not a money fan). Where’s all their season renewals now? I had to quit going because at my age when frequent rushing to the toilet took precedence. However I still pay Oceanic to see it live.
Problem with our state is too many political factions and meddling. Even when the going is good people want coaches out. Let’s face it, we don’t have unity and small minded. No leadership and even when people want to lead others will not let them. All these factions and even the media included who think criticism is going to help. Let’s call a spade a spade. Nobody likes to talk about it but too many favorite sons don’t help too.
Nobody talks about these things but……Heck let’s look at the Bob Nash situation. I’m a true admirer of the guy. He did a lot for UH and State but should he have been given the head coaches job only because he was a favorite son. Favorite son Danny Kaleikini ( hey I love this guy too). What does he know about basketball/recruiting etc to use his name and influence to try get Nash the job. Case of outside meddling results in years of wasted years for nothing.
Take Hugh Yoshida ( I love this guy too) did he screw up royally by hiring Von Appen? You bet! However, he did good with June Jones though. Did Chancellor/Donavan screw up royally with the McMackin thing with salary? All these bad decisions at high level.
Even when things are going relatively good somehow people want their heads. In Tomey’s later years after all the good things he did people started grumbling during latter years. Was Wagner treated fairly after he got a winning program going? Given an unfair ceremonial boot as I see it. So who’s responsible for all these things.
Let’s look at our politicians even at highest level. Remember the Sugar Bowl and how our Congressmen felt they deserved free ride to the Sugar Bowl and got on the bandwagon. Sure they paid their way afterwards when the media printed their names but I wonder now what support in donations they give to our football team now?
Heck I don’t know…but I think we should support Ben Jay and Apple. I think they are truly trying so we should give them a chance. Chow deserves a chance too…he’s doing better at local recruiting than others before him did. Let him serve his 5 years and see. Will we better then? I hope so….or are we going to waste more money for buyout etc and more turmoil.
Just my 2 cents. Can’t wait for football season…kinda hard but forced to watch my wife’s K drama in it’s place. Hehe.

the way gold and silver is sold has changed a lot.
you can buy it wafers , similar to like a chocolate bar. you can “break off” pieces from this wafer into gram size weighted pieces. end result, a gold piece of $55 or so and silver pieces of 5 cents or so, i forget the correct “denominations”. easily these will fit in your wallet, or what we might be carrying. in addition, a state bank, or better yet, a vault system can issue “atm debit cards” where we wont need to carry much with us where we can draw on the gold and silver in our vault or account as well in order to pay things. likewise, when when we are owed things it can be deposited into our vault or account…hmm isn’t this like a bank today? today, in other parts of the world, merchants can accept either paper money, or gold and silver and have it deposited in an account. likewise, they can also draw on it and pay someone else in that person’s choice of paper, or gold and silver.
it’s already happening in other parts of the world. its all physical, and it’s all there. best part, we cant overspend and are less likely to go into debt. and no fractional lending but a monthly transaction and or “storage fee” will make it profitable for a bank or vault system owner.
speaking of debt, courts have already ruled that detroit (which filed bankruptcy) does not have to pay out pensions… this set a precedence that any state or even perhaps the fed that pays a pension, now has a way to limit or dissolve what is considered to be a liability that it would need to pay retirees…and that’s most of us correct? a president might one day say…”in the interest of national security and patriotism, we must limit, stop, or confiscate pensions in order to pay down debt or go into a depression like we have never seen before.” if we are retired and depending on that pension, what do we do or will we do then?
simply put, we have car insurance, health insurance, home insurance, etc. but what do we have for money insurance? meaning, what do we have if a paper currency shall dissolve? i don’t think its a good idea for any of us to be a “u.h.” while we are going uh, uh, uh…we risk in our personal lives being in the conference of the have’s and have nots come the day the dollar falls or pensions are basically confiscated.
hey, hehe….i’m just in a different part of the world-not a different universe. to keep this tied in with football so ST doesn’t give me a swift kick in the okole, let’s hope this year there is a pot of gold at the end our rainbow.
