DL out for the season

P1020283

Defensive lineman Calen Friel will miss the 2012 season after suffering a fractured fibula during Thursday’s practice.

Friel is a second-year freshman from Kailua High. He was in contention for a spot in the defensive-line rotation.

The Warriors are scheduled to practice at Aloha Stadium this afternoon — a session that will include the new Warrior Walk and where the coaches will be positioned during games.

Look for Tommy Lee, Keith Uperesa, Tony Tuioti and Daronte’ Jones to be up in the coaches’ booth during the game.

Congrats to linebackers Rykin Enos and Dylan McCagg on being awarded football scholarships yesterday.

Head coach Norm Chow said he hopes to award two more scholarships to walk-ons in the coming days.

    Aloha Shirt Friday!

  3. Bugaz August 17, 2012 6:36 am

Do they need fans to participate in the Warrior Walk practice? That would have been fun.

  4. Bugaz August 17, 2012 6:37 am

Tuioti has the fire for side lines! To bad gotta be up in the booth.

The group that tracked down and arrested the Mililani bank robber should be given the task of tracking down UH’s $200k disappearance. They’re awesome!!

Eh, I like practice wea I going be positioned on Game Days, too! Can?

  19. mo808 August 17, 2012 7:12 am

Regarding comments on yesterday’s blog about keeping a tight lip in consideration Coach Chow’s prerequiste for fans having access to view practice: What’s that saying? Loose lips sink ships? How appropriate–considering where the Warriors are training this week? I’m reminded by my Marine son every time I ask him a question he doesn’t want to answer, “that’s G4 classified” 🙂

I think everyone is really excited to see how the team comes together this season! I know I am! Go Warriors!

  20. BigHiloFan2 August 17, 2012 7:12 am

At the very least their parents gotta be really happy!

  26. Wes'side Warrior August 17, 2012 7:24 am

  28. d1shima August 17, 2012 7:26 am

So who going be the “Avis” QB?

  29. mo808 August 17, 2012 7:28 am

I don’t twitter, don’t know how and don’t care to. I’d really like to be able to go to watch the team at the stadium today–but shucks, no can!

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid August 17, 2012 7:29 am

    mo-

Don’t worry. We won’t tell anyone that’s not what you meant.

  31. Kekoa August 17, 2012 7:35 am

A certain influential member of the local media once gave the Tsaiko ohana special stadium access. I think it’s time we re-visit the inner sanctum of Aloha Stadium to practice a little season opener of our own.

  32. letsgowarriors August 17, 2012 7:37 am

can u recommend that Coach Chow sign up for twitter and post stuff here and there. i think it would go a long way in keeping the interest in the program up. fans are starving for information on the team and we’re currently restricted to just the advertiser. no national outlets cover the warriors like Yahoo, ESPN, etc.

there needs to be a way to keep the fans updated. just my opinion.

  33. mo808 August 17, 2012 7:38 am

    @34 DPK 🙄

  34. mo808 August 17, 2012 7:39 am

    Yeah, Kekoa! That’s the spirit!

  35. Wes'side Warrior August 17, 2012 7:40 am

I am fine with general summaries of how the team looks. Although nice, I don’t need the full on details of every nitty gritty thing, especially before the unveiling of a new season, offense, crew, etc. Was kinda like that in the military too… on one hand, we had those who just had to know everything that was going on, even if it didn’t concern them… and on the other hand, the opposite side who understood that everything happened for a reason, so if they were left out of the loop, they understood it was nothing personal, and just continued on with the job or task at hand.

Yes, I had a top secret clearance. But that still didn’t authorize me full access.

Yes, practice is on a military base and not totally open to the public.

Yes, military folks can gain access to practice.

But that doesn’t mean we need to report everything coming out of practice, even with Coach Chow’s request to keep a lid on it.

We face a difficult schedule. Why give any opponent anything extra? They’re gonna be tough to beat already, so why should we handicap ourselves further?

Let’s practice hard, keep injuries to a minimum, and Shock da World! And den rinse and repeat, week after week.

  36. Wes'side Warrior August 17, 2012 7:42 am

    I don’t know… I like the amount of coverage already. Only other thing I wouldn’t mind is…

seeing what the new uniforms look like. Or did I miss it already?

  37. Pomai August 17, 2012 7:43 am

Wasn’t there some talk about the being in the shade this year rather than the sun?

  38. d1shima August 17, 2012 7:52 am

M :mrcool: de in the shade…

  39. tommui August 17, 2012 7:53 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

#42 POMAI – hope that is true – being in the shade during day games. Take advantage of the home field!

    Good going Rykin and Dylan!

And yes, loose lips sink ships. If we got injuries, let the coach announce it. If certain receivers got problems, let the coach mention it.

  40. d1shima August 17, 2012 7:53 am

  43. jeezy33 August 17, 2012 8:01 am

    40. Do you really even know the detail of what is being posted? If you read Jason Kaneshiro article this morning on Gant, that is probably as in detail as you can get about how a player has been doing.

  44. Na Koa Mike August 17, 2012 8:04 am

    is it September yet whooootahhhhhhhh

  46. Wes'side Warrior August 17, 2012 8:19 am

Jeezy, I’m not knocking on anyone’s past reports. All I said is I am fine with just a taste of what’s going on and don’t need full details. Others here have argued the opposite way and want as much detail as possible. All I gave was my opinion. Nothing personal directed to anyone in particular. And if reporters step over the line, I’m sure Coach will deal with it as it happens. Not for me to worry about it. Relax and enjoy your Aloha Friday.

  47. Shoko August 17, 2012 8:21 am

Well, in my opinion, unless you’re reporting the type of plays or formations in certain situations and the players involved, you’re not really divulging anything critical that the opposing teams can use. So far, its just been pretty much who looks good and who needs improvement. That said, as much as I appreciated little bits and pieces of info reported on this blog, I can wait till 9/1 to see what kind of team walks on the field. After all, I’ve waited eight months since the season ended, figure I can wait couple more weeks. 😉

Oh, by the way, Top 25 AP preseason poll comes out tomorrow. Think Ferd submitted his picks this year. Will be interesting to see if USC jumps up to the one spot.

  48. Wes'side Warrior August 17, 2012 8:23 am

And no, I have no idea how detailed a post is. I am in Georgia, and have been on the mainland since ’96. Before that, I spent 4 years home… and before that, another 12+ years on the mainland and overseas.

I crave anything UH and anything Hawaii.

But as I’ve stated, I also understand there are (and should be) limitations in each situation. So, I’ll take what I can get, in eager anticipation of the big show, when it happens.

  49. walter August 17, 2012 8:31 am

    well-done walk-ons!

#42, I’ve wondered why in the past, the team would be in the sun, while the visitors would end up in the shade

  62. haka August 17, 2012 9:07 am

The negative publicity by the media and it’s readership, though admittedly warranted, is really depressing. It is hard enough to build something, but it’s even harder when the external forces surrounding it have a knife in one hand and a hammer in the other. I hope the new and existing coaches and more importantly, the existing and prospective athletes, can focus on the positive aspects of being a part of UH. As a fan, I respect that it is hard enough to go to school and be a participating athlete much less have to also deal with such public fallout and scrutinization. Sometimes the pen is sharper than the sword and the criticism cuts worse than the incompetence.

Looking forward to the next depth chart soon. And nice to see Woolsey getting better. Turnovers are a killer. Waiting for the #1 punter.

  81. kapakahi August 17, 2012 12:43 pm

    Bummers about Friel!

DT position now looking really thin…..with only 4 returnees (Correa, Hanohano, Matagiese, Samia).

JMHO that any more injuries to DTs could be devastating. Otherwise, true frosh DT Mike Andrade might have to play this season.

  82. Don Weir (We-Ah) August 17, 2012 12:54 pm

Comments on Reardon Column of 08.17.2012

Mark Takai was speaking for the Letterwinners Club as we signed a letter of support for Jim Donovan at the last UH Letterwinners BOD meeting.

I for one do not have a problem with a Letterwinner, politician, and resident speaking his mind.

At least we have someone with a rational, transparent voice that is quoted in the mainstream media.

  83. Da Punchbowl Kid August 17, 2012 12:56 pm

Very, very sorry to hear about this, Calen. You will be missed! You are in our prayers.

Start keeping track of your medical documentation TODAY, Calen. Keep copies of all records, every scrap of paper relating to this injury. Medical hardships can allow a sixth year.

  84. HawaiiMongoose August 17, 2012 12:58 pm

That’s very unfortunate. It looked as if Friel was really going to make a contribution this year. Hope he heals quickly and well.

  85. Slugger August 17, 2012 1:00 pm

Heal up, Calen! Praying for you. I remember you watching practice from the gate when you first showed up.

Congratulations to Rykin & Dylan on receiving scholarships. Study hard.

Utah’s 2011 Offense against Montana State University may lend some light as to what we might see from our Warrior Offense this season. Utah’s Offense, like Hawaii was playing their inaugural year under Chow, switching to the pro set from some other system.

  97. Kapahulu August 17, 2012 1:36 pm

    SteveM

    From yesterday’s blog:

    Kapahulu:

    August 16th, 2012 at 2:56 pm

The downfall of President Richard Nixon wasn’t just Watergate, it was the coverup that followed. I wonder if a similar situation might happen at UH.

Kapahulu — coverup? Like claiming ignorance and placing JD & Sheriff on forced leave, hiring vendor for investigation (not the State Atty General), create new position for JD for $200+K and say he can’t be AD, spend a lot more $$$ than lost to make nice-nice and proposing to spend more on a search? Well, maybe there could be a coverup…

I was refering to the coverup possibly leading to the downfall of the UH President.

New UHAD will probably cost a lot more than the $240,000 JD got. More like $400,000 plus.

  98. Kevin August 17, 2012 1:43 pm

Season tickets arrive 3 weeks prior to the first home game. First home game is Sept 15th.

  99. tommui August 17, 2012 1:44 pm

    ST:

Where is the Cades Schutte report re: WonderBlunder.

I am extremely happy that JD and Mr. Sheriff was cleared of any wrongdoing – I assume this was part of the “thorough investigation” done by the Cades Schutte firm as was characterized and publicized by the University.

Yet the report, as was reported, as done about two weeks ago and led to the JD and Sheriff being cleared of wrong doing.

Lynn Waters, spokesperson for the University, about two weeks ago said that

the report “is not complete; it has not been turned in, submitted and accepted.”

Which leads to the questions as to: (1) when will be report be completed; (2) when will it be turned in; (3) why does it have to be “submitted” and (4) if this was the independent complete and thorough investigation as promised by the University, WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE ACCEPTED?

(If it is not “ACCEPTED”, does that mean Cades Schutte’s report is rejected and buried somewhere?)

    Inquiring minds wants to know.

  102. John Fitzgerald Byers August 17, 2012 1:52 pm

Legislators that have an interest in the welfare of Hawaii athletics should speak out.

Autonomy at manoa has been a disaster and sports wise I don’t think people realize how many of the facilities in place or getting upgraded are thanks in part to legislators getting involved in addition to private donors.

Anyone notice the missing component here? Legislators – check! Donors – check! So, who’s missing? Easy to figure out. Uh sports fans should be thanking legislative involvement.

  103. Don Weir (We-Ah) August 17, 2012 1:57 pm

    Slugger,

I park in the Aiea lot and walk directly into the game.

I look forward to seeing the Tsaikos at a tailgate and I will bring some Baja salsa.

Perhaps if there is any spare room on a Tsaiko tailgate grill I can bring some hamachi from Baja and you all can judge if it equals that from other shores/seas. I will also put together some smoked hamachi dip and we’ll see if ‘that just don’t beat New York salsa’.

My next trip takes me past the New Mexico game so it looks like the Boise game will work on my end..

  104. kifi August 17, 2012 2:09 pm

If I want to see a puppet show with a bunch of marionettes being strung along, then I’ll find one. Thank goodness football season is around the corner…can’t stomach these other sideshow games anymore.

  110. Kevin August 17, 2012 2:36 pm

Just read D. Reardon’s column and its discouraging but it is REALITY to see a booster “disgruntled” at the current situation.

What people do with their money is their own business but I hope that the majority do understand that UH booster organizations are made up of volunteers that are there to support the coaches and the student-athletes above anything else.

The passion and effort booster clubs display is a testament to the good and pure individuals that are around to help the real bottom line in supporting our sports programs.

If people lose faith in the university leadership, please do not lose faith in these young men and women and the coaches that help them become outstanding contributors to society on and off the field/court/swimming pool, etc…

  111. Kevin August 17, 2012 2:37 pm

I would like to se semi-retired.

But at my age that would mean I’d be suckering kids right out of high school to sell energy drinks and knives out of their cars….

    😆

Hit “like” if you get the joke! 😆

  112. Kevin August 17, 2012 2:40 pm

Need a refresher from the drama?

Just show up to the SSC next Friday night at 7pm and get nuts!!! Simple as that!

    #GOBOWS

  113. lava August 17, 2012 2:44 pm

At some point in the making of the Wonder Blunder, an attorney must have been consulted, and the investigation is worthless if it can’t even disclose that. An attorney somewhere, whose job it is to review contracts and protect UH against bogus contracts, must be in this thing pretty deep. Are they given immunity and permanent employment, like the fail folks will be given?

  114. PowderPuff August 17, 2012 2:49 pm

Kevin, thanks for pointing out Reardon’s column…(I should read more stuff in retirement :)), but hopefully Mr. Shigeta sees this and remembers to donate directly to the booster clubs, where the money benefits the hardworking student-athletes.

And talk about PR (I think I know something about that), there are so many good stories that the UH PR people can be telling, but they have their hands full and have been relegated to janitorial duties. SAD!

  115. Kevin August 17, 2012 2:52 pm

Best of luck to Coach “Bud” and her ladies on the soccer field. UH vs Nevada tonight.

The 2012-2013 UH Sports Season IS underway.

  116. Kapahulu August 17, 2012 2:53 pm

Perhaps the WonderGate investigation is complete and UH has seen it but does not want to officially accept it because they do not like what they see.

  117. Kevin August 17, 2012 2:58 pm

    PP,

Speaking of great/uplifting stories. The OFFICIAL start of the 2012-13 sports season is TONIGHT with Rainbow Wahine Soccer at Reno vs Nevada. While they are away, people should know regardless of their interest or not.

Hype is everything and overtime it can be a powerful tool.

GO BOWS GEEV EM COACH BUD!!!

  118. haka August 17, 2012 3:01 pm

    Yes! Go Wahine!

  119. Kekoa August 17, 2012 3:07 pm

Hmmm…PP mentions retirement @122. I’m thinking she may be trying to say something about her daily grind coming to a sudden stop. Is that possible? Say it ain’t so Puff Girl!

  120. Abunai August 17, 2012 3:16 pm

Sorry to hear about Calen. Best wish to him for a speedy recovery.

We still have hunter Thomson, Andrade, Toli, and Marcus. I think Marcus can play DT. He can hold his own.

  121. PowderPuff August 17, 2012 3:31 pm

Kevin, absolutely…nice to know the season starts tonight. Thanks for letting us know and Go Wahine!!!

Kekoa, yes…I am still practicing for my official Tour card, but in the meantime, yep….I have more time to do things like go to UH football practices and the upcoming Nā Koa and football-related events. Yay!!! And, I have a few days to figure out how I can be a fly on the wall at the BOR meeting on the 22nd. 🙂

  122. haka August 17, 2012 4:09 pm

yikes, nevada gametracker no so good. it’s the same as it was when I first saw it. 🙁

  123. HawaiiMongoose August 17, 2012 4:21 pm

Wahine not doing so well out of the gate, down 2-0 at halftime. And that’s despite having a 3-2 lead in shots on goal. Let’s go ladies!

  124. HiFlyer August 17, 2012 4:23 pm

haka – just updated nevada up 2-0, halftime

  125. haka August 17, 2012 4:30 pm

    thanks HiFlyer!

    Let’s Go Bows!

  126. al August 17, 2012 4:35 pm

i have to sit back and laugh at all this shibai.

some folks at manoa are taking the public cheaply. like i said before, i(we) only look dumb. it is not the first time administration/bureaucracy have taken the people of hawaii so unkindly. thinking that we are an “ignorant” people.

around here we do things the right way. perhaps these newcomers, malahini, need to take a course in “da kine” or what it is to think local.

they need to learn what the meaning of “pono” is all about.

    …nuff said.

  127. madeinhawaii August 17, 2012 4:49 pm

The bureaucracy at UH only care about the big money grants and research investments, they have very little empathy for the everyday alumni. They make a big stink about the Athletic Department’s deficit so that they can deflect criticism to their own deficits and repair needs nearing the billion dollar mark. All the while they line their pockets.

  128. RedZone August 17, 2012 4:56 pm

    Oh no not Calen.

    Oh well. Take care Friel

  129. Slugger August 17, 2012 5:03 pm

    Thanks, Kevin! I’ll tell Moki.

    Can’t wait for football!

  130. tommui August 17, 2012 5:04 pm

LAVA #121 – the contracts supposedly were reviewed by the UH attorney(s).

  136. SteveM August 17, 2012 6:00 pm

    RE: #136

Al — here’s what a local friend had to say from the beginning…

    1. Whoa….we got swindled? We going get our ticket money back? Yeah? OK den, let’s go nail those crooks. So what’s the next fund raiser?

    2. Hey…so why is JD and Sheriff forced to leave? No can believe they da crooks trying to cheat us! They long time friends and UH guys. They was trying to raise some bucks for the UH. Besides…$200K money for swindle us is too manini for make crook. Say, who has the UH money?

    3. What is this investigation shibai? and a private contractor to boot? Where the police, FBI, state lawyers and state investigators? Where Five-O…hire them instead and get some free air time. No hire investigator that relies on being hired and paid by UH to find junk stuff about UH. And if they ‘vestigating JD & Sheriff, they charging us unnecessarily kine hours.

    4. Shit… now everyone going be too scared to try and raise money for UH athletics!

    5. How much we paying the private investigators? As much as the swindled money? Poho! The president making all this shibai and fuss. And where the lost money went?

    6. Hoooray — JD and Sheriff cleared. Told you so….

But I bet they not going try raise money for athletics anymore.

    7. Wait…JD cleared, did great job, and now he’s not the Athletic Director anymore. Say what? He get one new, made up position effective now…just cost another $200K. Gee, the UH President get plenty $200K’s lying around…

    8. Ohhhh…President get own agenda. Geee, I thought it was only lack of Aloha, poor judge of character, and plentymoney. Good thing certain politicians and media guys won’t let her flush JD down the toilet by over-blowing the Wonder deal. Beeg mistake!

    9. I think cheaper all around to find new President. How about JD?

  137. Stephen Tsai August 17, 2012 6:01 pm

Like I said before, having a concert is a good idea.

Too bad they’ll never ever have another.

  138. protector August 17, 2012 6:17 pm

ST, I totally agree that a concert is a great idea. Hope you’re wrong about never having another. The missing piece from the puzzle / equation was the lack of something called ‘due diligence’. They just have to make sure this is taken care of in the future.

  139. SteveM August 17, 2012 6:18 pm

ST — hopefully UH can try for another concert or two someday once the fear subsides and they trust upper admin have their backs.

But it will have to be brokered and arranged by someone like Tom Moffat. We know Uncle Tom delivers.

  140. BigHiloFan2 August 17, 2012 6:31 pm

    SteveM

your 138 was stupendous, brilliant. especially no. 9. imma elevating you to supasmaht category. 😆

  143. HiFlyer August 17, 2012 7:03 pm

    mih – Union?

  144. madeinhawaii August 17, 2012 7:12 pm

  151. d1shima August 17, 2012 9:51 pm

    BHFx,

Nevah get da right proposition for pre-position.

  152. Moocher August 17, 2012 10:03 pm

    Totally agree with many…..

You cannot put a malihini position that dictates so much of what is kama’aina.

I no shame in saying this because it is not a racial thing…it’s a cultural thing.

My fear is this……JD is next to Apple because JD is being used and supposed to offer all his contacts and resources to Apple…thus the new position. But I sure hope not.

  153. iwonderwhytheyhateme August 17, 2012 10:20 pm

    $200,000 was lost…and suddenly a $200,000 position has been made up…Hmmmmmmm 12/21/12 anyone? =P

Although the specific crimes at Penn State clearly are significantly more important than the ones here, some of its high-ranking administrators were shown the door for the cover-ups. Some Regents were forced to resign. Accountability and transparency are too important to hide under the table.
