It wasn’t an easy day for Jim Donovan yesterday. En route to the mainland, a passenger had a medical emergency. The plane made a U-turn, then headed back to Hawaii. After dropping off the ill passenger, the plane went back to the mainland, turning a usual 5-hour trip into a 9-hour one. Somewhere along the way Donovan learned of the quarterback’s DUI arrest.

brought this over from ARC …

Jared Vanderbeek-Defensive Coordinator & Defensive Backs

This will be my 1st year coaching at ARC and my 3rd year coaching after playing for the previous 10 years. I was a safety at Granite Bay High School where we won the SFL both of my varsity years and I earned All League honors both years and All City honors my senior year. After high school, I went to Cal for two years (red-shirt for 1) and then transfered back home for one season and played for ARC. While playing here I received the team Defensive MVP and All Conference and state honors. From ARC I transferred to Sac State where I finished my playing career and graduated with a BS degree in Communications. Once done playing I went back to Granite Bay High School and coached the varsity defensive backs last year. Following our season I went overseas to Europe to coach professional football in Vienna, Austria. This upcoming year I will be coaching the Safeties here at ARC. My parents are Scott and Camie Vanderbeek, and my brother Corey is currently playing at Sac St. I enjoy playing golf and hanging out with friends. Go Beavers!

So I guess the QB position is David Graves to lose. No competition from Shutter anymore for sure. Yeah ainokea what anybody says cause even though it may be suspicion of a D.U.I. c’mon what the hell was he doing out so late anyway. Easy for put the picture together of what goes on at that time. Bruddah went clubbing got drunk, driving around and boom po-po is in his rear-view mirror. As a quarterback one of your main attributes on the field is decision making. If you knew you was QB2, you would think you would be busting okole to possibly ascend to QB1, which meant studying playbook and practicing your skills rather than going out 3-4 in the morning getting drunk. Honestly he made a mistake and nobody perfect, but for me I seen far too many times that same mistake ruin careers, ruin families, and unfortunately take lives. I bet if he just so happened to kill someone in your family, it would hit home and your views would change about this situation. Thank goodness bruddah never kill himself or someone else but at the same time just putting himself in that predicament is shameful to everyone not just him. I dunno what Coach Chow going do but all I know is he ain’t seeing the field anytime soon. Live and learn…

Granite Bay is a pretty upscale community in Sacramento area and the football team is pretty good. American River College got a pretty good football team to. Nice that Coach Vanderbeek got a defensive background especially in the secondary, cause I really would love to see our secondary become a strong point for our defense this year. I mean we got some ballers back there…my man JHT, Edwards, shute Fields coming in too, etc… Speaking of defense, I remember when I asked Coach Miano a question about what is his prototypical size player in the secondary was since we always getting the shorter guys. He mentioned that he would love to have the 6ft. and above types but they were hard to come by and that the shorter types were just as good or even better… Funny though how when I look at Coach Chow’s recruiting list I see almost every secondary position being recruited where the player is 6ft. or above??? Hmm…how you figure?

  37. papajoe2 March 30, 2012 9:23 am

I read John Leicester’s Press Box column in the SA this morning about women that may participate in the Olympics, from countries that never allowed women to play sports before. Over 15 years ago, some world class soccer coaches from Brazil, would be staying at a good friends house for over a week. My friend asked me if I wanted to come over and hang out with them. I went there everyday and even got to play in some small sided soccer games with them, even though I never played soccer in my life. At that time, the US women’s soccer team was the dominate team in the world with Mia Hamm, et el. The coaches told us that although the US team was very good, there was a lot of countries in the world that didn’t allow women to play sports at all. Their place was in the home and not on a sports field. I didn’t know that at that time, but it opened my eyes to what was going on in the world. The lead coach was the head coach for Qatar’s men’s national team. I didn’t even know there was a country called Qatar. With them not able to speak English, I thought he was saying guitar which didn’t make sense to me. They did have a interpeter that spoke English and Portuguese and translated. I was so embarassed and they had a good laugh. It’s good to know Qatar and Brunei (huh? where dat?) will be allowing their women to compete in the Olympics for the first time and Saudi Arabia is seeking NOT to be the only country in the world that allows only men to compete in the Olympics and not women. Sort of like title IX, but they have an even longer way to go. Oh, by the way, those coaches that came here, are now spread throughout the world, coaching different countries’ national teams. One coach, last I heard, is the head coach for the Brazilian national women’s team, that has been beating the US’s current team or giving them a hard time. I’m not sure, but I think another is the head coach of the Japan women’s World Cup Champion team that also beat the US in the finals.

  38. Curt March 30, 2012 9:26 am

Through ESPN1420/Artie Wilson this morning, I asked Coach June Jones about his thoughts on Colt going to the CFL. The most interesting point that JJ made was that he thought Colt should do well in that league but, that he wasn’t sure about his medical condition. He said the concussion really impacted him. That’s how I interpreted his response. Give it your best, Colt!

  39. Steve March 30, 2012 9:33 am

If Cayman Shutter is allowed to remain on the team, he will not see any playing time unless something happens to Graves, Alo, Woolsey, and Higgins. If M.A.D.D. has anything to say about it, he will not be allowed back on the team.

  40. Steve March 30, 2012 9:37 am

To add, by allowing him back on the team, it would be sending out the wrong kind of message to the young people.

  41. jm2375 March 30, 2012 9:40 am

Allowing mentally disturbed individuals to post on blogs and attend softball games also send the wrong message to all people.

  46. gmahoney March 30, 2012 10:04 am

Why would MADD have anything to do with Shutter remaining on the team? Did I miss something or is the pot being stirred?

  50. d1shima March 30, 2012 10:14 am

    ppj2,

Was jus wundrin if the writers at bleacherreport weren’t getting a little lazy and following the recent history of the Warriors with Bess, Grice-Mullins and Salas by just plugging in Ostrowski as the “next batter up”.

Seems like the slot position won’t be going away totally but it will have a much different emPHAsis in this offense.

  51. Steve March 30, 2012 10:19 am

Just saying, Coach Chow being a smart man, would consult with that group, and take what they have to say under advisement, before making his decision. With the number of people hurt or killed due to a drunk driver, just this year alone. I cannot see anyone condoning such a thing. BUT then again, (some) feel, only a slap on the wrist is warranted. What a message that would send to the young people. He needs to be kicked off the team. Just lucky he did not hurt or kill someone. Next time, maybe not as lucky.

  52. jm2375 March 30, 2012 10:24 am

    Flush

  53. (Jesse) James March 30, 2012 10:28 am

    #40,41, 54 STEVE

And after we kick him off the team, burn him at stake?

  55. Steve March 30, 2012 10:28 am

jm2375 – would you feel that way, if he had hurt or killed one of your kids. I do not think so.

  56. Couch potato March 30, 2012 10:29 am

oh yes, a judge being a smart man or woman, will always consult MADD when they have a DUI case on their docket. 🙄

and no one said he only deserves a slap on the wrist. non-tsaikos included.

  57. Steve March 30, 2012 10:31 am

tom mui, no, just off the team. What if he had hurt or killed one of your kids. Guess, you would still want him on the team. Maybe, even leading the team, as their QB.

  58. Couch potato March 30, 2012 10:33 am

no use get into hypothetical situations. he got arrested for suspicion of DUI. no one was injured or killed. no need get into what ifs.

  59. Steve March 30, 2012 10:34 am

Coach Potato, anything less then being kicked off the team, is a slap on the wrist.

  60. Couch potato March 30, 2012 10:35 am

look at all the past Warriors that had prior arrests records. Some turned out to be pretty damn good citizens.

  61. cakenoodle March 30, 2012 10:39 am

Steve, do you believe in 2nd chances? Have you had any 2nd chances? What Shutter did was stupid and shows lack of leadership. But he is still young. I did lots of stupid things when I was young, worse than Shutter. I’m glad God gives 2nd and 3rd chances. If Shutter genuinely realizes what he did was wrong and could have killed someone and has a change of heart and changes his ways, why not give him a 2nd chance. Hawaii is known for giving 2nd chances with great, positive results…Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Anthony Carter, etc.

  62. Couch potato March 30, 2012 10:42 am

i’ll call you kenji, you seem like a kenji to me. you do have your opinions and if you want him off the team then that’s your prerogative.

as for me, my opinions don’t matter on what coach should or should not do. what matters is Coach Chow will make his decision and as fans and supporters, it is something we will just have to accept.

    all pau now.

  63. ruffles March 30, 2012 10:42 am

every case needs to be judged on a case by case basis, anyone with a little common sense

knows that you cannot bunch everyone in one lump. I know that everyone has made decisions in their lives they wish they could take back and hope that they are given a second chance. We all make mistakes, now if it was a repeat event then that is certainly a different matter. And IF is a really different thing also, no one in FACT was hurt, thank

goodness. Please put some thought into the matter before you rush to judgement when blogging.

  64. A-joe March 30, 2012 10:44 am

Right now, there’s nothing anyone can say that Shutter hasn’t either already heard or considered. He knows he has a tough tough road ahead of him.

What he truly needs right now is some major support. No sense in making him go any lower than he already is. Let’s all pick up Shutter and move on.

  65. wait a minute March 30, 2012 10:45 am

What if your kid played softball and somebody was always tearing them down on a blog?

What if your kid played football and was arrested for suspicion of DUI and somebody on a blog was acting like he killed or was going to kill somebody?

What if you were a UH sports fan on a fun, family friendly blog and someone kept inferring that we don’t mind having a killer on our favorite team, even if no such thing has happened or is likely to happen?

  66. Couch potato March 30, 2012 10:45 am

    A-joe,

    You mean, “Shutter up!”? 😉

  68. kitsunegari March 30, 2012 10:49 am

What if your 19 or 20 year old daughter was two thousand miles away playing softball and some guy in his late 50s starts yelling offensive and personal comments towards them at home games when he is supposed to be a fan. Then admin temporarily bans him only to return again? Someone must believe in second chances.

  69. RedZone March 30, 2012 10:49 am

Talk about injuries. USC having hammy problems. Any Warrior injuries to date?

  70. Old School Dave March 30, 2012 10:51 am

Injuries, suspensions, players getting dismissed, players transferring/quitting are all part of the game. I’m sure Coach will take appropriate action regarding Cayman Shutter. If anything, it’s a distraction that takes time and energy from preparing for the upcoming season. The other quarterbacks will move up the depth chart and will need to step up.

  71. cocobean March 30, 2012 10:53 am

Coach Chow is a smart guy. What ever decision he makes will be well thought out.

He knows whatever punishment is meted out is going to set a precedent for future infractions.

Dismissing Shutter from the team is going to have ramifications in terms of recruiting and transfers. If he is dismissed will that mean Chow will not recruit anyone with a DUI or accept transfers with a DUI?

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid March 30, 2012 10:53 am

You right, Hawaiian! Braddah needs our support.

Beyond that there’s our state’s legal system, UH, Coach Chow’s, and his Warrior team mates’ roles in all of this. I trust them to do what is right.

And, I trust that if Cayman has made a mistake, he’ll do better next time.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  84. A-House March 30, 2012 11:30 am

I do not know if Cayman is listed on his parent auto insurance policy and if the 2 other “speeding” violations were in the past 3 years. Ihope not.

If the speeding and DUI holds and the prior speeding violaitons were in the past 3-years, the renewal premium will be unbelievable high; very, very high! Lucky to get away with $3000 for six months.

  85. Steve March 30, 2012 11:31 am

Wow, Stephen, I wonder if you would think it was funny, if one of your family members was in the hospital due to a drunk driver. I can just picture you laughing seeing them in the hospital.

  86. Stephen Tsai March 30, 2012 11:34 am

    Steve:

    Re-read the thread.

The funnier person wasn’t in reference to the DUI.

It was the reference to the use of the blog name.

  91. Stephen Tsai March 30, 2012 11:40 am

Do I think a DUI arrest is serious? Absolutely.

Do I think that “Steve” should be given so many chances after reports and complaints of abuse to softball players, their families and so many other people? No I do not. And if we had a vote, I’m sure he’d be ousted for good. But I figure anybody who so desperately wants to be here, well, I’m always willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

  92. DaveLetterMan March 30, 2012 11:47 am

    Good day Tsaikos!

    Best wishes Mrs. ST.

I believe in second chances and Shutter will serve his “punishment” for his wrong doing be it a suspension or whatever. If he is allowed back on the team we as fans should welcome him with open arms cuz he will have paid his dues for it. Let the punishment come from the legal system and Coach Chow. Nuff said back to lurking (maybe for good the way this blog is heading).

    Go Wahine!

    Go Bows!

  99. papajoe2 March 30, 2012 12:21 pm

Mega Millions at $640 million. The odds of winning is zero if you don’t play.

  100. Garret March 30, 2012 12:38 pm

I’ve talked about how I wish Hawaii had a lottery system and how other states make a lot of money for their schools (including colleges that UH plays in sports) from the lottery. 42 states, DC, and the U.S. Virgin Islands all participate in the Mega Millions jackpot…it looks like Hawaii is one of the few states that don’t take part in this lottery.

The Mega Millions drawing today is for the largest lottery jackpot in word history–well over $500 mil. California’s schools will get more than *$100 mil* from this Maga Millions jackpot. So, no matter who wins, education systems win and California’s schools will have a lot of unexpected money (lottery ticket sales went way up after the lottery got to an unexpectedly high level, the school system wasn’t expecting all of this money).

If nobody wins the jackpot today, the lottery payout could hit $750 mil or more for Tuesday and California schools could get $150 mil or more, money that they can really use in this era of budget cuts.

I don’t understand why an NBA player would buy $10k in lottery tickets today, but the big payout is enticing a lot of people to buy more than they normally would. His salary is $1.5 mil this year and $1.6 mil guaranteed next year.

only problem is we no can get tickets in Hawaii, but if you get ticket(s) and win on the mainland, the State of Hawaii, which bans gambling, will be first in line to collect taxes and, according to my sources, you can keep your winnings!!!

UH goes up 4-0 on an RBI-double by Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and a 2-run homer by Majam. Now B2nd. via @HawaiiAthletics

  105. Steve March 30, 2012 12:46 pm

cheepono – I will go you one better, Softbows up 9-0 mid 4th. Majam and Iwata have homered.

  106. Steve March 30, 2012 12:49 pm

Coolen, has changed his starting lineup, Brynne Buchanan starting in place of Sharla, in right field. Also, has moved Dara to 7th in batting order, with Makani batting 8th, and Brynne batting 9th. Kelly, is red hot with the bat now. Do not see this game going more then 5 innings, will be a mercy rule game.

  107. Garret March 30, 2012 12:52 pm

Jared Vanderbeek sounds like a very well qualified GA, he should be able to help the Warriors and learn a lot during this time. I am happy for him that he gets this opportunity.

From a selfish perspective I would like to see Warrior graduates who wish to get a start in their coaching career (like Inoke) to get GA spots, as I think that it is great when players I’ve watched play get into coaching. Plus, it is good for the program to have recent players sticking around at UH to help with the team.

My guess is that in the future Coach Chow will offer some GA spots to worthy Warriors who play for him and wish to start their coaching career. Coach Chow hasn’t coached any of the past Warriors so he doesn’t have a bond with them and cannot judge how they would be as coaches (plus they aren’t experienced in his system), but that will change as he spends a few years at UH.

reading about JD’s long flight and it seems it is becoming more of a common problem I fly long distance regularly and on my last 2 trips, the flight attendents asked for any medical personnel on board. We were lucky cause basically on both trips the passengers were not in serious danger. I don’t know if it is the anxiety of flying or having some form of castrophobia, but notice that breathing or shortness of breath seem to be the most common problem.

  118. Couch potato March 30, 2012 1:17 pm

whitey, castrophobia? fear of being castrated or fear of fidel? 😆

There seems to be confusion with the live stat positional listing on NMSU’s live stat tracker. Apparently Liilii was actually DP and Buchanan was at right field. The stat tracker at NMSU listed Liilii at right and Buchanan at DP.

  128. Kevin March 30, 2012 1:36 pm

    CHECK THAT!!!

Nevermind, Liilii was indeed at right and Buchanan was DP.

  129. Steve March 30, 2012 1:37 pm

Kevin, if you listened to the broadcast, that is how Coolen submitted the lineup. He made the switch right before the first pitch was made.

  130. Couch potato March 30, 2012 1:37 pm

i’m sure “lanaiboy” will be posting other wac softball scores as the day progresses. 😉

  131. Steve March 30, 2012 1:37 pm

Or, should I say, when the players took the field.

  132. Steve March 30, 2012 1:45 pm

With Sharla out for awhile, Buchanan is a good replacement. She might not have the pop, that Sharla has with the bat, but gives the Softbows a better glove, and a faster outfield. If Coolen wants more pop at the plate, he can go with either Burton, or Zamora, out in right field.

  133. POCOLOCO March 30, 2012 1:45 pm

  147. Kevin March 30, 2012 2:35 pm

I have a friend working towards her goal of eventually working full time with autisic children.

She was mentioning Asperger but I heard it as “a** burgers”.

I started laughing and making jokes about “a** burgers” when lead to odd looks and a running inside joke.

    ST,

  149. Couch potato March 30, 2012 2:39 pm

the answer is to stay on meds. be surrounded by a support group. do not get into volatile situations. stay routine and positive as much as possible. partake in conversations that minimize debate. attend group outings with those of similar symptoms and encourage positive outlooks. and finally, check if foot in mouth before blogging.

  150. Derek March 30, 2012 2:45 pm

Very, very quiet. No news about MBB recruiting from coach Arnold. No news about Wahine BB recruiting from coach Beeman. No Masters until next week, no Major League Baseball regular season until next week, excl Seattle-Oakland. No UH football practices until next week. No UH baseball wins for the last 5 games, come on Bows.

Well, there are some good news. Wahine softball wins easily, Final Four tomorrow, San Francisco Giants on TV on KITV 126. Thank you, KITV. You made my summer.

I think the 2006 UH team was better. Two of their losses were at Florida and at Boise State. Colt Brennan had a better year and had a better offensive cast and a better defense.

But, my personal favorite was the 2007 because it gave me the most thrilling season with miracle finishes at La Tech in OT, at San Jose in OT, at Nevada at the finish by Dan Kelly’s 2 kicks, one good after a time out and he kicks it again, no problem. And of course, the comeback from 21-0 against UW to win 28-21 on National TV on a bomb from Brennan to Jason Rivers that sewed up an undefeated season and BCS bid to the Sugar Bowl. To say the stars were aligned is an understatement, but that year the Warriors were lucky has hell.

Of course, the best part that all started in 2007 is when Colt Brennan announced that he would be returning for his senior year. The entire State was watching that day and the place erupted. I was watching on TV and I actually shed some tears, it was that emotional.

He was and still am in Hawaii fans eyes, a pied piper and our Heisman Trophy 2nd runner up. I think we all long for the day when we have another undefeated season, maybe next time including the bowl game.

  155. Stephen Tsai March 30, 2012 2:50 pm

So a man get’s a phone call from the hospital, says his wife has been in a BAD car accident and needs to come right away.

In a panic the man has all kinds of thoughts running thru his head.

When he arrives the ER doctor greets him and asks him to sit down. The doc tells him his wife is essentially a vegetable. He will have to bathe her, feed her, take her to use the restroom, etc…

The man is in tears screaming, “WHY GOD WHY??? My life is ruined, I can’t do this alone, I mean the cost of 24 hour care… MY GOD!!!”

The doc then says, “nah, just kidding… she’s dead.”

  165. just a second March 30, 2012 3:24 pm

I concede, but I love good joke.

‘A doctor, a lawyer, a little boy and a priest were out for a Sunday afternoon flight on a small private plane. Suddenly, the plane developed engine trouble.

In spite of the best efforts of the pilot, the plane started to go down. Finally, the pilot grabbed a parachute, yelled to the passengers that they had better jump, and bailed out.

Unfortunately, there were only three parachutes remaining.

The doctor grabbed one and said “I’m a doctor, I save lives, so I must live,” and jumped out.

The lawyer then said, “I’m a lawyer and lawyers are the smartest people in the world. I deserve to live.”

He also grabbed a parachute and jumped.

The priest looked at the little boy and said, “My son, I’ve lived a long and full life. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you. Take the last parachute and live in peace.”

The little boy handed the parachute back to the priest and said, “Not to worry, Father. The ‘smartest man in the world’ just took off with my back pack.” ‘

So, the lead guitarist and drummer carpooled to the gig.

The guitarist drove. They arrived early and were able to find a parking space close to the stage entrance.

As he closed the locked door to the hatch-back the guitarist realized he’d locked his keys in the car. He peered in throught his window, and yup! There they were, still in the ignition.

It took him 45 minutes to get the drummer out. . .

Would have been more funny if he broke the window to get him out. 🙂

I insist. You had the name first. I’m not Steve. Steve’s the smartest man in the world.

Sorry I did not intend to imply that I thought you were him. The blog owner said to submit a funny joke, I should have written “I submit Steve as my joke”. You’re alright.

so when will new wbb coach laura beeman annouce her first assistant coach?

and when will her first recruit be named?

    april 11th?

  238. al March 31, 2012 12:59 am

so technically speaking the gibber still has only one scholie to give.

if, that is, all of the early commits make it through the gate. orel lev is already in school. so caleb dressler and isaac fotu need to pass muster.

will there be more cutting ties with the rainbow warriors?

it seems that the gibber is actively pursuing 2013 recruits. is there a subliminal message here?

so a point guard has been a priority and a lot of swing men are being wooed. especially those who can shoot the rock.

some suspect that gerry blakes did not qualify and he did enroll fulltime at citrus cc as his only option.

curiously, though he was a redshirt and did practice with the jc school. i am now of the belief that it was so that after playing in 2013 he could transfer with his aa in hand to a four year program with 3 for 3.

i do hope that the warriors who are on the bubble, academically, get it done by the fall. if not it could heavily impact our depth chart.
