McMackin: No decision on Tuioti

Greg McMackin said he not yet decided who will fill the job that essentially serves as a recruiting coordinator.

Tony Tuioti, who attended last night’s banquet, is a finalist and the leading candidate.

“He’s in the interview stage right now,” McMackin said. “I want to make it clear that no decision has been made. We’re going through the process.”

Tuioti today said he has not received an offer. “On Monday, I hope, they’ll have a final decision,” Tuioti said. “I’m optimistic, but there’s nothing yet.”

If Tuioti lands the job, his first priority would be to recruit Keenan Graham, one of the nation’s best defensive ends. Graham will be a senior at Silverado High in Las Vegas. Graham’s defensive coordinator? Tuioti.

Hawai‘i’s football stars were out last night, helping to launch UH’s series of football camps. The dinner raised more than $35,000.

Here’s Vince Manuwai of the Jacksonville Jaguars:

LeeAnn (Pestana) Satele and Alvis Satele are former star athletes and current proud parents of UH football players Brashton Satele and Liko Satele. Trivia: Alvis wanted to name Brashton “Cornelius” after former NFL player Cornelius Bennett. The suggestion was vetoed because it was feared kids would call him Corny.

Reunited … and it feels so good … reunited … Whoops, just had a disco-days flashback. Anyway, here’s a reunion of David “Happy” Gilmore, Nick Rolovich and Brian Smith. Trivia: For the past 14 days, Rolovich has been a pescetarian, losing 7 pounds.

For five years as UH student manager, Marissa Bonilla served many football roles. One of her duties was to be the seventh offensive player (the center) on 7-on-7 drills. She now is a teacher at her alma mater, Kaua‘i High. Initial reports are that enrollment there is increasing.

    St,

    Great pictures! Thanks a lot.

The list of former Warriors in the NFL is getting very impressive. It shows that you can get there (NFL) from here (UH). If players being recruited by UH are concerned about the best path to the NFL, the former players are showing that NFL teams are aware of us way out here in the Pacific. Maybe more playing time at UH will be better than being on a big name school and sitting on the bench.

Marissa is absolutely gorgeous! Wow! She should be a model in New York.

Leonard looked more handsome in Barry’s famous photo. Sorry.

And Mrs. Miano looks like a mere teenager.

  11. Stretch July 12, 2008 9:21 am

oldie – thanks for your donation to the party!!

  12. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 9:22 am

We all know that last night’s event was only the SECOND-best party of the year. I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah, there were a few pro football players last night. But how many parties have an All-Star band, Bulla’s routine, Faye and Homey, and a ha‘a-dancing athletic director? Thought so.

  13. ryan July 12, 2008 9:23 am

just wondering but where does the $35K they raised go? To UH or Speed and Quickness?

  14. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 9:23 am

Well, of course, Gigi prefers Barry’s photo of Leonard. He’s wearing clothes in my photo.

    Great Morning All.

    nice pics

  19. Kekoa July 12, 2008 9:26 am

Oldie ~ You got that right! The NFL now takes a little longer detour thru the lower campus. Soon it’ll be upgraded from a frontage road to an entrance ramp.

  20. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 9:26 am

    You’re right, it’s the haka.
It was taken from a May Day program.
We almost had Heather McMackin with us, but she pulled a Mr. Gomes.

Stretch, Not a problem. Just a normal (is there such a thing?) doing it for the love of this blog and the Warrior program.

Kekoa, The coaching staff should really emphasize that with the recruits. You can get there from here. In fact by staying home, they may play better since it will be in front of family and friends.

  31. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 9:41 am

  32. Stretch July 12, 2008 9:42 am

  33. Kekoa July 12, 2008 9:44 am

Gigi ~ How did you do it! How did you manage to keep hubby up past his bedtime? I look over at 8:05 PM and you 2 love birds are still in place!

I turned around at about 9:10 PM and saw David devour 5 chicken sticks with 5 more in his hand, before the caterer guy cleared the table. My grandson brush blocked the guy and managed to salvage a few sticks himself.

Ryan Grice-Mullins was there, but he was zipping around, and I couldn’t get a picture. Next time I’ll wait outside the men’s room.

  37. oldie July 12, 2008 10:03 am

    Stretch,

After reading about the great time everyone had at the party, my lurker friend, Dim Sum, and I have decided to make every effort to be there next year.

As for the DVDs, as I told ST, unfortunately I got better as the season went on. The first few DVDs have poor video quality, but I think a got it right in the end.

I found a copy of the KKEA audio for the 2006 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl so I put that with the video that I had. The second half performance by Colt makes that the game to have if you want to see Colt at his best. And he did it against an ASU team that had fairly good defensive stats.

  38. d1shima July 12, 2008 10:11 am

    Stephen,
Are all or most of these former players helping out with the keiki this morning at the camp itself?

  39. Stretch July 12, 2008 10:17 am

oldie – there are more events set up during the year. No need wait until the next anniversary party.

  43. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 12, 2008 10:23 am

KEKOA DrDoc has spent the last 20 years working as the head of a trust division at a bank, as CFO for one of the largest private social service agencies in the state, and as treasurer for other non-profits large & small. He’s served on over a dozen boards. All of the organizations have used a variety of ways to raise money ranging from writing government & foundation grants to being entrepreneurial such as the current Recyling For Change operation or the malassadas sales to holding special events which include silent auctions & raffles. His professional experiences have made my work much easier in having to deal with all the bureaucratic hoop-de-do at every level of government both administratively and legislatively.

Please don’t forget that he’s a Tasiko too even though he doesn’t post on the blog. Please call upon him for help.

<RONNIE: Did you get my e-mail concerning the August 19 football workshop? If not, let me know & I’ll send it again.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO PARTY? I asked this question a couple of months ago but didn’t get any response – probably because it was too far away to think about. Here it is again.

Is there any interest in coordinating a post-practice weekday potluck on campus in August for the football and women’s volleyball teams both of which will both be in full practice? The purpose of the event, besides eating and fellowship, would be to let them know we’re behind them 1000%. I had an extremely preliminary discussion with an Athletic Department official who said that no decision could be made on their end until a detailed written request was submitted for clearance, but as long as everyone was invited, all teams are included, and there’s no money being made, then it wouldn’t take long for a clearance.

If no one speaks up, then it’ll go into the Great Ideas for Someone Else To Do file.

FINALLY – After ten months, I finally got it, but I still don’t understand why. .Perhaps there are as many reasons as there are people.

Off to work again. Saturdays are just another day on the calendar for this family.

  44. WarriorMojo July 12, 2008 10:25 am

So, which Tsaikos besides Wafan and me are going to be in the DC area next week?

And, following up on Wafan’s question, ST, is Colt going to be practicing at Redskin Park next week? My hotel is five miles down the road.

Or, is there going to be a public reception when Colt meets that young baseball player that Brother Mike wrote about?

And, OMG Vince is all grown up. Can’t believe it. I can still remember the day he told my mom (who was his English teacher) that he was committing to UH. Wow how time flies. What is it, 5 kids now? Makes me feel so old.

  52. oldie July 12, 2008 10:45 am

    Stretch,

I hear you. Maybe at one of the Tsaikogates. Is that going to happen this year? BG, Kazz, and whoever else is involved has done a great thing for the Tsaikos and Tsaikettes. We park at Aiea Elementary but pay mucho bucks for the privilege. Don’t mind too much since a good part of the funds go to Na Koa.

    LizK,

No, my friend Dim Sum and I are on the Wessai of Oahu. We’re just happy to participate in this blog in our own way. He’s been lurking from the very early days of this blog. He’ll come out of lurking one day.

One factual error in my #43 post above. DrDoc headed a 15-person tax department within the trust division of the bank – not the entire division although I think he would have liked to have gone down that road at some point in his career.

    Kazz,

Will do. Have you or BG been able to securre Richardson for this season?

    ——

I mentioned this before, but the thing that impressed me about Jim Donovan is that he continued to park at Aiea Elem last season even though he could have gotten parking in the stadium as the color commentator for KFVE. He’s just a very humble guy.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I can’t wait for the pictures too…

  66. 99club July 12, 2008 12:08 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos!

Las Vegas Sports Consultants lists Hawaii as a 27 pt underdog against Florida in August. Rutgers is a 5 pt favorite over Fresno St. USC -18 vs Virginia. Not that any blog readers care about such things.

  67. stacyj July 12, 2008 12:14 pm

99, I wouldn’t expect it any other way. Hawaii with a “new” QB and WRs would never be favored this early against the reigning Heisman QB and a football machine like Florida. But, I also love this. 27 points, I hope this motivates our boys to continue working hard and to go out there and kick some a. If the spread was merely 7 points, they may mentally ease up. I say, bring it on and bring out the competitive beasts in our Warriors.

  68. 99club July 12, 2008 12:19 pm

    stacyj-
I think our D is going to give them a rude surprise. Offense will put up all the points we need to shock those gators.

  69. LizKauai [Believer] July 12, 2008 12:19 pm

stacyj- YEAH! We’ll show them where the under-DOGS are going to be next month!!!
I can see that you are a Warrior Fan  . Mwahahaha!

Thanks for the headsup on the bad link… fixed.

Also- Papa Leahy video is up. BAM!

  70. wafan July 12, 2008 12:29 pm

OMG! Papa Leahy said the “F” word.

I cannot believe “F” still has the gall to live in HI. And why has not anyone run him down on one of his runs? Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

Thank you LizK for the photos and videos. Awesome and inspiring!

  71. stacyj July 12, 2008 12:32 pm

Yeah, I’ll check out the Pops. I love him!

Our D is going to be our strength this year, but if things fall into place, our offense has the potential to get the job done. Remember, Granke and Funaki have years of experience albeit different experience. If they studied the game and have prepared themselves these last few years, it should all fall into place. I just hope we have enough o-line support and an offensive attack that is rounded. I love passing the ball but, need the weapons to keep defenses on their toes. Respect the run.

  72. stacyj July 12, 2008 12:46 pm

I got the earphones on and am listening to Papa Leahey. First Mrs. A-house has me laughing…gets me smiling from ear to ear. Then, Pops goes there and talks about the Fumbler. I was laughing so hard my oldest daughter came over, asked me what was so funny, looks at my face and sees me crying with laughter. “What’s wrong mommy?”

Some good those videos. Really wish I was there. I gotta plan for next year.

  73. A-House July 12, 2008 12:54 pm

    99club:

27 points is good, but Florida with all their “HIGH” pre-season ranking, they give only 27!!!!!! – they should be shot – or, they are more knowledgeable than the people who sit on their okoloes, thumb through papers, remember the Sugar Bowl, etc., give the gators many props and give the Warriors much small kine credit.

I want it to go higher when so I arrive in LV on 8/26/08 I can go visit Harrah’s.

  74. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 12:58 pm

  77. Kekoa July 12, 2008 1:00 pm

99club & stacyj ~ With a spread like that, the sports book people had better watch themselves. I for one will be more than willing to wager a sizeable amount of the family *Portalet* on this game.

Your reasons are valid stacyj. It’s almost as if you’ve been looking over our shoulders at the practice sessions. Yet, at the same time it’s just knowing the team members and coaching staff as well as you do that allows you to speak as confidently as you do. Good call!

  78. Long Time UH Fan July 12, 2008 1:17 pm

  89. Kekoa July 12, 2008 1:54 pm

Yes LT UH Fan!…I thought I was the only one who keyed on that call that C. L. used to make at the old stadium about the yard marker chains coming up short by a small Manapua, or the length of a Portuguese sausage! 😆

I remember almost falling out of the stands with laughter when I heard it on my new Japanese “7 transistor” radio I carried with me to the game as a little 10 year old. Ahhh…the atmosphere of the old termite palace, nothing like it since.

They say we can’t generate that kind of electricity in today’s sports venues. I say we can. If we help make history repeat itself and pack that big rust bucket full of fans like we did for the UW game…why not?

Grab your neighbors and encourage them to come out. Talk UH fooball to the people you work with, family members or even people you just met. Make it a habit. They say one person doing this can influence 350…I got 5 more to go for this week alone to reach my quota.

Turn conversations to comparing offense and defense hookups with the local kids on the team. There is always a connection to be made with a family or friend of a player. Support them, cheer for them, and celebrate with them.

    Woo Hoo!
    GO WARRIORS!
    Kekoa

    LizK,

Thanks for posting the blog party clips. I watched the Papa Leahey one. That was good. I’ll watch the others when I have more time.

  91. Long Time UH Fan July 12, 2008 2:04 pm

    LizKauai,

Thanks for posting all those party clips….We enjoyed watching and listening to them…again; great stuff! Like Bulla says Make Memories…

  92. stacyj July 12, 2008 2:05 pm

Kekoa, I’ve always said that some of the best players start off on the scout team. If you are hungry enough, your day will come. Those that are happy with just being on the team are happy with where they are. Those that want to play, do everything to learn and excel. Many great players for UH did not even get a scholie. But, they put in the time, they studied, they worked hard, they figured out what it took to get the job done and look at them now. From walk-on to shine-on.

I believe! I think this season is going to be something we will talk about for years to come. We all expected great success with the return of Colt and the receiving corp but this year, this is the year they can prove that they are the real deal. They just have to step up and play like they want it.

That is kinda why I get on the new guys for not making the workouts. I know some have to work and have other commitments BUT, when I see pictures of them all over myspace drinking at high school grad parties every other day, I wonder how committed they are. Some could make an impact right now. Do it. Others could use the time to their advantage. I’m sure the Beast isn’t out partying every day while trying to get his career into full gear as quick as possible. That is dedication to team that I expect. I (along with all us Tsaikos) want this team to be awesome.

Okay, off the box, onto the floor.

  93. stacyj July 12, 2008 2:09 pm

Eagle, I hate to say it but if ST isn’t confirming yet, I would hold tight. He usually clues us in pretty early on the scoops. Even if with slight hints.

  94. Long Time UH Fan July 12, 2008 2:12 pm

    Hi Kekoa,

The clan was in rare form the other night. 🙂 Good to see Pops Kekoa at another Tsaiko function. He’s looking good!

  95. Eagle July 12, 2008 2:16 pm

    Stacyj,

I know ST is the man with the scoops, but it doesn’t mean other people don’t have their sources either. And my guess is ST knows what’s going on but is just not saying anything, for whatever reason. Which is why I apologized for saying it on his blog. I’m sure he will come out with something when he’s ready.

We’ll see how it all shakes out.

  96. stacyj July 12, 2008 2:20 pm

No worries Eagle…I agree, others do have scoops.

    ST,

A blog contest might be fun too… 🙂

  100. stacyj July 12, 2008 2:38 pm

Why did I need to fill out a survey before I could get on the blog????

  101. stacyj July 12, 2008 2:40 pm

Sad, sad, sad. I’ve always been an HA supporter but common management. First the videos are gone now, no recognition of ST’s accomplishments. Auwe!

I think HA management have a problem. They don’t know whether it’s better to acknowlege Tsai’s blog or ignore it.

I’m sure they are aware of the high traffic it generates. That’s all good. But they also know that the Tsaikos would follow ST to another blog site in a flash if he chose to create one. That makes ST a potential threat to them. Management does not know what to do with this.

  109. oldie July 12, 2008 2:57 pm

have=has. Although in Europe have is the correct verb, I think.

Hee hee! Actually, I think to clarify, if I understand correctly: An “Esme” would be to drop in quickly and then leave (as in “tappity tap” … and then the cane). A “Jojo” would be … not to show up?

  120. oxymoron July 12, 2008 5:21 pm

  135. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 7:46 pm

    Gigi:
I haven’t figured out the blog bio list yet.
The way the plan was supposed to go was we’d have a regular blogger on Tuesdays, a lurker on Wednesdays, a “celebrity” on Thursdays and a UH person on Fridays.
This is how it unraveled: The girlfriend of our first UH subject pulled a Jojo and decided not to write the bio. We had pictures and everything lined up. Then Liz Chun was set to go. She agreed. We waited and waited. I ran into her, and said she’d deliver. Then it was more wait and wait.
I was ready to move on to Leahey or Kekaula, but I promised I’d have her on first.

  136. gigi-hawaii © July 12, 2008 8:00 pm

hmmm, ST, what’s with these media people? Don’t they know about deadlines? haha. I’d move on to Leahey or Kekaula.

Will Kekaula discuss the 6 toilets in his house? I am sure he will cause he’s not bashful.

  137. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 8:08 pm

Kekaula has what is officially called the Big John.

  138. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2008 8:09 pm

  139. gigi-hawaii © July 12, 2008 8:20 pm

ST, interesting that Amazon.com sells Big John toilets. I guess it’s ideal for Kekaula since he’s heavy. I want to ask him if his 6 toilets are in one room or whether they are scattered throughout his house.

Imagine: one toilet per person! Luxury!

Thank you also for the updates on the players from past teams! I wish them all well and am proud of how they represent the school and state.

Good to hear that the Tuioti announcement is getting close to becoming official.

  148. Garret July 12, 2008 9:18 pm

Interesting article about how the emphasis on earlier and earlier recruiting can hurt both the team and player. I agree with that conclusion…but if everyone recruits early then nothing can be done about it. And with an early signing period a definite possibility in the near future, the problem will get worse, not better.

The article also goes over something that I pointed out months ago–the top Texas schools (Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, etc.) have given out almost all of their scholarships…that means that there will be players in Texas who improve a lot their senior season (which is quite common) who do not have a top in-state school (plus, Oklahoma and others will be almost out of scholarships too) to offer them. In my opinion, that is an opportunity for a school like UH to get some good players who proved themselves during their senior year.

Before they’ve even played a down in their senior year of high school, 19 players have already committed to play football for Texas in 2009. A highlight of the class is five-star quarterback prospect Garrett Gilbert, the second-ranked quarterback in the nation according to Rivals.com.

Many of these players committed in February of their junior year, some while they were still 16.

While sites such as Rivals, which awards stars to athletes and tracks their every move, have always been around, the recent trend has been athletes committing earlier and earlier.

The fact that players are committing earlier and earlier also may be one of the causes of the increasing parity in college football. Division I-AA Appalachian State beat Michigan, and Arkansas State played Texas down to the wire. Arkansas State had a player, safety Tyrell Johnson, drafted in 2008 before Texas did.

Late-blooming players are often ignored by major schools and end up having to go elsewhere when big schools fill up their available scholarships with other players, or when the schools have recruited another player at their position.

Same goes for players who have a breakout senior season. By the time Texas made an offer to quarterback Chase Daniel, it was too late. He had been waiting for the offer and finally grew tired of it and committed to Missouri. Take a look at him now.

No offense to Colt McCoy, but Texas would be in much better shape with Daniel.

  149. Garret July 12, 2008 9:19 pm

Thank you sjmacro and Liz! I can’t wait to have the time to go through everything you have made available!

  150. Garret July 12, 2008 9:23 pm

Article about how there are so many intermediaries (many with questionable ethics) that work between players and agents.

In an interview, a prominent agent described how so-called “runners” serve as intermediaries between top prospects and agents hoping to cash in when the player turns pro. The agent, who has represented several NBA players, spoke on condition of anonymity out of concern that his comments might be construed as an admission he had engaged in wrongdoing.

“Overwhelmingly, 95% of the time, there’s a third party involved” in player-agent relationships, the agent said.

“If agents could get players in a fair, representative way without paying money they would, because everyone is a bottom-line businessman,” he added. “But they can’t.”

Interest in how runners work recently piqued when a former associate accused Rodney Guillory, an L.A.-based events promoter, of accepting about $250,000 in cash and gifts from a sports agency and funneling them to basketball star O.J. Mayo before and during the player’s one season on the USC basketball team. The allegations are being investigated by the NCAA, Pacific 10 Conference and NBA Players’ Assn.

The going rate for a runner, the agent said, is 1% to 2% of a player’s estimated contract. For a $5-million contract, that would amount to anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000. An agent’s standard 4% cut of the same contract would be $200,000.

Runners may also receive a percentage of the agent’s cut of a player’s shoe contract or other endorsements, which sometimes stretch into eight figures.

And in many instances, runners are paid without the knowledge of the athlete they are purported to be representing.

The Navy is turning the Fuji Film blimp into a super spy blimp that will catch drug smugglers, immigrant smugglers, etc. It sure it a LOT more efficient (10 gallons of fuel per hour vs. the current 600-700 gallons of fuel for patrol aircraft) to use that type of vehicle and it can stay in the air a lot longer than an aircraft or helicopter.

Florida’s secondary, the Gators’ most glaring weakness a year ago, has taken another blow before the start of preseason practice.

Stopped by the football camp before the track meet..saw BrianK, Coach Mack and Coach Rolo. Saw many more people but did not recognize them. I think I need flash cards with pics and name to memorize. I guess I will be an extremely poor reporter.

Mei Ling: How are you? Still on IR?

LizK..Will get to your videos on Thursday or Friday…Would love to hear.see them again.

Hi Esme! You sound great (at Genji)..enjoyed the Karen Carpenter number..my all time favorite from her is Merry Christmas Darling.

Jason – Was that you at Borders? I was running out to take my kid to the bathroom and saw someone that looked like you. Uncertain and in a rush to get to a bathroom….didn’t get to say hi.

I knew that was Chawan. I was going to go in line and ask him…”Are you a Hawaii football fan….that also has a slight interest in some girl named Leila?” But the line was too long. Oh for two today…and I usually see Homey there every weekend.

  170. Darren July 12, 2008 11:18 pm

Liz and Jerry – Thanks for the videos and pics! Next best thing to actually being there. The vibe and energy at the bash was just awesome….can feel it just through watching the videos.

  171. Jason July 12, 2008 11:29 pm

Yeah, I was at Borders today. 😀

  172. ラスベガス July 13, 2008 12:36 am

Looking at Jason’s picture earlier, man has he changed!
Grown from a skinny kid into a (still skinny) young man.

  173. 99club July 13, 2008 2:21 am

    ラスベガス-
Good morning Mr. LV…still in the dog house for the car? A friend at work bought the same model the other night and it was his wife who suggested it. She wanted to get rid of their van. I’m waiting for the day when my wife suggests that I get a motorcycle to save gas.

d1shima’s posts above regarding the injured player for Florida…wow…they were already 98 out of 119 in pass defense. Our biggest problem in that game may be that our QB’s eyes will be too big when he sees the open guys.
