A new direction

With Don Weir leaving as Na Koa’s executive director and great samaritan Don Murphy taking a break from hosting the Pigskin Pigout, the football booster club will be challenged to find revenue-raising avenues.

Or not.

Maybe it’s time to re-think some of the expenses.

First, there are things that should not be changed. Tuition for summer school and fifth-year students are a must. The club’s most basic purpose is to help the student-athletes. In that regard, how about limiting the training table only to players? It would save a lot of money — and wasted food. On the road, every meal is catered. How about catering two meals a day, and giving the players a small per diem for  the extra meals and snacks? It will save money, and give players a little more independence.

Also, maybe the director of football operation’s position should be fully paid by the athletic department. It is clearly an important position.

What it comes down to is, as one Upper Campus official said, the athletic department is “under-funded” by the school and the state. A university does benefit from successful intercollegiate athletic programs — through increased enrollment, stature, jobs created and opportunities for women. If more of the necessary expenses — summer school, key positions — can be placed on the athletic department, it would help in its requests for more financial help through subsidies or student fees.

If subsidies are needed to support athletics, the first step is to change the law. Athletic department operations are authorized under the law as a “revolving” fund, which means it should be self-supporting. In reality, UH should not be subsidizing the department.

To allow the State and UH to legally subsidize athletics, the authorization needs to be changed to a “special” fund. If the gap can be covered by student fees, gate revenues, sponsorship, and donations, this legal change wouldn’t be necessary.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Congrats to Inoke and his new wife.

el guapo – technically, UH subsidizes *all* departments and the AD shouldn’t be any different. Most schools, even at the big time programs, subsidize the athletic programs.

Yes, the time is way past for a student fee. $100 / semester – 50% to AD and 50% to upper campus “extracurricular” programs (e.g. theater, speaker’s bureau, concerts)

UH has always been underfunded by the Legislature.

The time has come for UH, and all universities, to get rid of the tenure process. Make the faculty produce, year in and year out, in order to keep their jobs Too much detritus (sp?) at the top.

  18. jm2375 March 27, 2010 10:25 am

ok, “tenure process” should be “tenure system”

  19. postmanke March 27, 2010 10:36 am

I’m all for pinching a penny, but oooh, I dont know about giving the players too many choices about nutrition days before the game. Some schools make it a science. Eat to win is big part of many top college programs. some take it more seriously then others. Empty calories consumed days before could be the difference in a tightly fought game. It would be too easy for a player to ‘sleep walk’ over across the street from their hotel to the Burger King in the middle of the night. Not to say that they would, but usually Traveling + Money + Food = something enjoyable.

If they can be prudent on their intake without worrying about it, then maybe. But that would be another headache a coach would have to worry about.

I like the other ideas on saving money, not so much on the meals. If there is waste, then get the vendor to provide a per head price – then the waste is on them.

They do need to get serious on the student athletic fee. Just put it in already, everyone excepts or forgets about it after a few years..

  20. postmanke March 27, 2010 10:39 am

  25. el guapo March 27, 2010 11:14 am

    jm2375,

*Technically*, a revolving fund should not receive operating subsidies, while a special fund can receive subsidies.

From page 52 of this report:

University of Hawaii at Manoa Intercollegiate Athletics
    Revolving Fund, Section 304-8.7, HRS

This fund was created in 1985 and continues to meet its original purpose
by accounting for funds received for activities related to the University
of Hawaii at Manoa’s athletic programs and facilities. User fees are
charged for athletic program activities and athletic facilities use,
demonstrating a clear link between the benefits sought and charges made upon program users. However, as we reported in 2001, the fund
continues to use general funds to support payroll costs and therefore does not meet all criteria for a revolving fund.

The simple solution is to change the Manoa Athletics Revolving Fund to a Special Fund to be in compliance with HRS.

Unfortunately, the players are supposed to eat healthy and the standard Tsaiko food would NOT be good for athletes. For athletes to perform at peak condition they are supposed to have specially tailored diets, with different food combinations for different positions.

  34. Garret March 27, 2010 11:47 am

    ST,

I don’t know how much UH would be saving on food in your scenario. A couple of days ago Don Weir posted on the blog that the summer school tuition for 2009 will be over $233k. The entire training table bill for 2009 for Na Koa was $9700, which was for all the coaches and staff. As you can see, the food for coaches and trainers costs very little compared to summer school.

I’d guess that at least some part of the coaches/staff eating are the graduate assistants and others who earn very little from UH, and they probably rely on the free food to help them afford to work on their limited salaries. If you are talking about people earning the bigger salaries, then I agree that they should pay for their training table just like the players do.

  35. Garret March 27, 2010 11:48 am

    Happy Birthday Cat!

  36. Garret March 27, 2010 11:54 am

If the Pigskin Pigout makes around $100k for UH and the training table costs Na Koa less than $10k, cutting all trainers and coaches off from the training table will not come close to making up for the Pigout.

When UH spends a week in Vegas between road games, giving the players money for per diem won’t work that well…food choices in Vegas are typically not the healthiest and the players aren’t allowed to leave the hotel anyway so they don’t really have that many choices.

  37. mctruck March 27, 2010 11:57 am

  40. BG March 27, 2010 12:08 pm

Let’s play “on the other hand”…

    1. Ricketts kept walking the lead off batter which is a no-no for a top flight pitcher. On the other hand, she doggedly kept working herself out of trouble.

    2. Puu-Warren wiffed on 3 straight risers in her first at-bat…made no adjustments. On the other hand, she adjusted in her later AB’s and got on base to forge the win.

    3. Yoshikawa looked terrible in her first at bats. On the other hand, she hung in there (and didn’t hang her head) and slammed that critical double to drive in two runs.

    4. Majam was looking bad at the plate after her first inning single. On the other hand, with 2 strikes, she manufactured exactly what the Coolen was asking for…ground ball to the right side.

Gotta admire the way the Wahine SB battle!!!

  42. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 27, 2010 12:26 pm

    BG,

Today is a new day and two more opportunities.

SJSU is like a poor-man’s CAL with the way they attempt to steal. I saw no real indication that we should drop a game to them as long as we minimize those infielding errors.

Stephanie Ricketts was moving the ball in the zone well in the beginning and a combination of poor home plate officiating that featured a mysterious strike zone by that idiot in a blue shirt and more errors on our end in the infield shook up Ricketts down the stretch. I’m pretty sure Parnaby will get the nod this afternoon at 4.

We’ll see how that does as the umps rotate today also.

  43. Pomai March 27, 2010 12:53 pm

Kazz you have to admit the man in blue behind the plate was consistently calling the low an away strikes an most of the one that caught the conner balls

  44. protector March 27, 2010 12:56 pm

    Congrats to the Funakis!

Kazz, I really wish they had put in Parnaby or Rodriguez by the 6th inning; maybe they wouldn’t have had to play the extra innings. Oh well, the main thing is that they won although they needed a near miracle to avoid San Jose State from having a high scoring inning that would’ve led to a nauseating result.

jm2375, I agree with a lot of your points/suggestions. If you dismantle the tenure system, though, I feel that you’d need to have some neutral committee to decide the merits of an instructor’s work. If for example, they got rid of the tenures system, merit would probably decided by individual principals. That’s okay if you have a fair, impartial and even-handed administrator (I did work for a few of those). However if the administrator practices cronyism, empowers toadies, micromanages / bullies dissidents & those on their s-lists, then only the favored will be rewarded & (unfavored) hard workers would never be rewarded and could even lose their jobs manipulatively (I’ve seen others who’ve been treated that way and also had to deal with a number of these types of so-called administrators). I’ve always favored a merit system DEPENDING on who’s making the evaluative decision.

  45. protector March 27, 2010 12:59 pm

jm2375 (re: #44) – I was using DOE as an example-don’t know how the UH system works.

  46. Old School Dave March 27, 2010 1:22 pm

Money talks. I think that what Don Murphy has done over the last decade is extremely admirable and many thanks go out to him. However, for the UH Athletic Dept to become dependent on the revenue from the Pickskin Pigout was not a good thing. They should have had a plan in the making to generate revenue on their own rather than to rely on the generosity of UH supporters.

Regarding a year round training table, it would be a welcomed addition as far as providing more balanced and nutritious meals as opposed to simply providing a monthly per diem and having student athletes eat what they want. In the case of what’s available on campus and nearby, there seems to be a lot players eating at places like Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, L & L, Burger King, etc. That can’t be good in terms of nutrition, weight management, and athletic performance. With a training table, the coaches can monitor players food intake in terms of quality and quantity. I’m not sure how much a year-round training table would cost, but I’ve seen numbers from other Div-I programs in the area of $100K to $150K a year.

I suspect that the UH Basketball Program will be going with a heavy LDS recruiting focus under Coach Arnold. HC and two top assistants being Mormon. Try to go after the best Mormon players nationally and use the church’s missionary program to scout and recruit top international players. Maybe compete with BYU recruiting wise. I guess that’s one way to do it.

  52. jm2375 March 27, 2010 3:31 pm

protector – there are tenure/promotion committees in all schools/depts. They are supposed to be neutral, but cronyism, etc still creeps in. There are several current UH faculty members who I have worked with in the past who, in my opinion, should have never gotten tenure and/or promoted.

Good Evening Tsaiko Nation, The Hawaii Costa Mesa Reception of 200 accepted Southern California Freshmen was a unique and enjoyable experience. Program was exceptional with Hawaii hula dancers and chanters mesmerizing the fill capacity ball room as the kekei’s inspired
the afternoon with their hula rendition to malamalama as their was not a dry eye to be seen !

Talking Hawaii story to accepted freshmen and calming fears to parents sending their child miles away across the pacific ocean is quite comforting and reassuring as my table was all filled and every eyes and ears listening to my “PASSION” for the aloha spirit and the educational wealth they will recieve from the University and the compassion from it’s people.

At the very end of the program the entire population ballroom stood up and joined hands while we sang “Aloha Oe” as the voices young and old ‘resounded’ the walls of the Terrance Pavilion in which accepted UH freshmen and parents had “ALOHA” in their hearts and “MAHALO” in their spirits !

Congrats Tsaiko Nation you got 200 Southern California “brand new” Hawaii freshmen that will be coming this August 17th as their $200.00 deposit is in and Manoa has become $40,000.00 richer !

    Long Live Malamalama !

Wonderful sweep by the Wahine! Friday 3-2, and today 7-3 and 7-1.

Both Parnaby and Ricketts had rough moments but the batting supported them well.

    Majam was well… Majam. 😎

Jessica Iwata had a good series at bat.

Senior leader Katie Grimes also had key hits in all three games.

Good momentum before heading out on a rough three series road slate against BSU, USU, and NMSU.

Good fun had by all and another good sized crowd to support the ladies. Tsaikos in da house: SJ and Myki, Protector, Wdoc and Dr Doc, Ralph, Pomai, NorthShoreFan and the Mrs., the Ahouses and Midori, and the Tsaidude himself!!!!

Whew! I was away for lots longer than I thought I was. Correction to my #40. It was Iwata and not Yoshikawa. Iwata had another outstanding performance today! Kudos

In no way was my post at #40 meant to be negative in any sense. For me, what counts is how anyone comes back from some adversity and perseveres. Even if it doesn’t result in a W, I like it. The Wahine SB and Warrior VB have certainly showed that quality. Majam was struggling last night and most of the first game today. But she hustled and played hard, stepped up and, with one swing, changed the complexion of the game. What’s not to like about Majam and the whole team? Nada

  80. Pomai March 27, 2010 8:22 pm

As far as the hitting the last 3 games, IMO the problem was that in the first of the season they were facing pitchers that threw heat, an SJSU’s pitchers where throwing a lot of off speed stuff and their timing seemed off, that is until the last game when I think they got their timing back.

And Majam, what can you say that girl can swing the bat for sure, maybe they should make her the batting coach. LOL

    Was a good sweep!!!!

The first major test for Na Wahine comes over the next two weeks – nine, count ’em, nine games between April 3 and April 10 on the road. A 50% win rate on the road is good – anything higher than that would be greater, greater, greatest.

Would it be possible for some of our continental Tsai-kos to show up at New Mexico State (April 3 & 4), Utah State (April 6 & 7), and Boise State (April 9 & 10).

    Rainbow Cliff:

Know you are fast asleep at this time, but wanted to thank you for your endless love for UH and Hawaii!

I have met many graduates who reside on the mainland, but none can match your spirit and enthusiasm for UH-Manoa.

I was not aware that UH did any “mini” sessions for incoming freshmen on the mainland – just a nice touch for parents and students to know that they will feel welcome and begin to “grow” that “isle style”.

Again, thank you for your role in the “welcome” session!!!

Of course, our best to Rhonda.

i felt bad for ricketts losing her shutout with only one more out left.

she really gut it out today after pitching 10 inn yesterday.

i think she will get the pitcher of the week award and no doubt majam will get her third hitter of the week award as she put sjsu away in all three games. her most underrated attribute is her defense in the outfield and the way she plays so tough in the field, on the basepaths, and at bat.

The fundamental problem I have with this study is that the entire study was over photos of 230 pro baseball players who were grouped according to their smiles. I don’t know if how pro baseball players smile for the camera is representative of the public…

Man went to a thift store in Provo, Utah and bought a BlackBerry for 50 cents (what a deal!), then when he got home he found that the phone included a list of phone numbers and e-mails for famous athletes and entertainment stars! Dave Checketts (who was the GM for the Utah Jazz and the NY Knicks) lost the phone years ago and all of his information was still saved. It included sensitive e-mails with the Salt Lake City Mayor and Utah Governor. It is quite fortunate that the man is an honorable one–instead of making money off the phone (it would be worth a lot on eBay) or calling the celebrities, the Utahn is returning the phone to Checketts.

Some of the other UK newspapers have already started charging or have announced plans to start charging in the near future.

I was surprised to read that JJ just signed a 6’7″, 290-pound offensive tackle for their *2010* class…I’m surprised that someone that huge slipped through the cracks. That recruit is from Mayfair High School in Lakewood, California.

I’m guessing that he was a late qualifier. The word must have gotten out to others too, since Oregon State (Cav) and others called the recruit during his visit to SMU this weekend.

Right wideout Malcolm Lane said he is on suspension because of poor grades during the fall semester

This is from ST’s article. I really hope that Lane gets his academics in order. One thing I should point out that if Lane transferred out of UH or Mack tried to take away his scholarship and then he transferred, then UH would get dinged *twice*. If a player transfers in bad academic standing, a school is punished much more severely by the APR…

Mr. A House Kind Sir !

Top of the morning to you as I was a sleep last night and now woke up to read your #86 post as your sincere words really touched and moved me for this beautiful Sunday morning !

All I can say is “THANK YOU” and the GREATNESS of Hawaii as your aloha spirit will live with me forever as I am a “RAINBOW WARRIOR” for life and the time I had with you good folks living and playing for Hawaii was so ‘IMPRESSIONABLE’ in my life that all I want to do when opportunity calls is to give back as you gave me so much more !

It just comes so easy in support to Hawaii Nei as I am always “HONORED” to have the privelage of helping my alma mater as upper Manoa campus call on me regularly to aid their various causes in recruitment, advertisment or public speaking as I am grateful that Belinda Nagashima and Doctor Ronald Cambra has faith in me to “deliver the goods” as well as our Chapter here in Los Angeles to keep me inform and request my presence.

Always a pleasure to dialogue as you, Mrs A House, Midori 7 and Masa Boy are just a “MAGNIFICENT” Hawaii family and I am just so grateful to have met you and spend quality time !

I will give Rhonda your kind regards and look forward to our “close encounter for the third time” !

    Have a “WONDERFUL” Sunday !

Good Morning Brew 808 as you are right Don Weir and Murphy calling it quits during this month tells me one thing “TIRED” of giving and making things happen as the carpet has been worn out and UH did not see the investment of having a new one in place.

Genuine people are hard to find and Mr. Weir and Murphy are ‘GIGANTIC’ heroes on their tireless efforts in support to UH athletics.

Big void and huge shoes to replace as hopefully some one will come through BUT not likes to the talents of Weir and Murphy as they are “ICONS” to their profession !

    Al,

Yes. I was there. I’m not sure what’s the deal with Taualii. It doesn’t appear she’s changed anything from last season. Last year she and Milcs were the offense but Taualii kinda started slowing down towards the end of the 2009 regular season.

With her batting clean up we get CHOKE potential to do some damage with Majam, Iwata, and Gonzalez hitting well.

Funny things start to happen in WAC play though. Last season Pu’u-Warren started coming alive during conference play and Katie Grimes got some important singles this weekend. So those that usually have a quieter pre season are looking to contribute more offensively.

Too early to count out Taualii.

Kazz ~ Speaking of Ms. Taualii. I was mildly upset that she was hit by a pitch a 2nd time last night. That one seemed to be in retaliation for what the SJ girls thought was a little ‘foul’ play at 1st base the inning before.

It was great to see Kenny Estes helping out with our Project Grad pulehu chicken cooking Friday night! His folks ( and a few others) are still major “make it happen” folks for Waimea High even though their kids are long graduated!

Time to wake up the breakfast cook…

  153. Kekoa March 28, 2010 9:15 am

Pomai/Kazz ~ The boyz in blue played the violin as the SJS coach pleaded his case. Apparently, he felt that his runners were intentionally ‘brushed’ aside during a couple of bang-bang plays at 1st by Ms. Taualii.

Since his protest was pretty much ignored, I think their pitcher decided to ‘spank’ our girl as a reminder. Poor kid was already struggling at the plate and had made a desperate dive-in-da-dirt attempt to catch a foul ball. Just not her nite!

She’s a tough kid. She will have much better days ahead. When she does, the WAC pitchers better look out!

Bye the way Brew ~ Koakane’s parade went off as scheduled. Once he got them headed in the right direction, they made a smooth run to the finish.

Typical. Errybody like be in da parade mo 1st den da group in front dem. Tantrums are thrown, words exchanged and dirty looks make da mascara run from the corners of da maka!…but as soon as dey strike up da band, everything is forgiven and da smiles are painted back on.

  156. Da Punchbowl Kid March 28, 2010 9:32 am

Great job on the spring ball write up Mr. Tsai! Nice and meaty, chock full o’ the stuff we like to read about the Warriors.

How well Coach Arnada whips up the Defense and how well the Offensive line whips their opponents are going to be key.

Some holes to fill, to be sure, but the team looks good right now.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  157. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 28, 2010 9:33 am

    Kekoa,

I was headed to the bathroom when Taualii got hit on her back the second time. I was standing on thw first base side at the top of the stairs and when she threw her bat down I thought she was gonna charge the pitcher!

    She should have. 😈

(Kekoa, I like make trouble too!!!)

But yeah she’s tough. I think all the softballers are pretty tough which is why its fun to watch them.

However I think Puu-Warren has some kind of career record for the most walks as a result of getting hit with a pitch.

ST says Moniz is up to 202.

hope his arm-strength conditioning is improving too.

any, or all, of our QB’s gotta be able to throw long to take advantage of our speedy, and tall WR’s.

Good blog! I pray this horrible volcanic ash will go away. My cousin is stuck in Italy and she is running out of money. I heard the ash cloud will be staying for at least another week but I don’t know if I should believe it. Does anyone know if it’s true?

bandana! your site is really one of a kind! This morning I found another real good blog containing game-torrents for WII, XBOX 360, PS2, PC and Nintendo DS. Thanks again.
