Satele awarded scholarship

Liko Satele, who is projected to start at defensive left end, has been awarded a football scholarship. The announcement was made during last night’s team meeting, when head coach Greg McMackin said the search for  pass-rusher had ended.

Satele — don’t call him Landon — is a 2007 graduate of Word of Life Academy. He attended Lambuth University (Jackson, Tenn.) for a year  before transferring to UH. He is, of course, the son of Alvis Satele and LeeAnn Satele, and brother of Brashton Satele.

Each training camp, the Warriors try to do an activity to help promote team unity. Two nights ago, hypnotist Clark Tuitele put on a show that was both entertaining and motivating.

In one demonstration, center Kody Afusia was hypnotized into forgetting the number six. Then, while under the trance-like state, he was instructed to ask receivers coach Mouse Davis for a tryout. Asked to prove why he would make a good receiver, Afusia counted his fingers: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.”

Afusia, ever the good sport, said he can’t wait to see the video.

(Full disclosure: Tuitele is a blog regular.)

Sooner than later, defensive end Siaki Cravens said he hopes to resume practicing as early as today. He has been out with a strained right shoulder.

Offensive lineman Chauncy Winchester-Makainai did not practice yesterday because of back tightness. The condition is not considered to be serious.

K5 has been informed that WAC Sports (or something like that) has picked up the rights to the UH-Boise State football telecast. The game will be shown as part of UH’s  pay-per-view package, although the Home Team of Jim Leahey-Shawn Ching-Russell Yamanoha will not be calling the plays.

It’s too bad Colt Brennan did not play in yesterday’s game. Not sure what it means, although it probably was a little optimistic for him to be game-ready after four days of practice. I’ll try to reach Colt today and see what he says.

    Up late, Al?

    Or is it early?

  3. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2010 1:08 am

I think I found your answer: One of the parents said that David Katina is grayshirting Should be ready to go in January.

i’ll give the shirt to hobes malmsbury.

  5. al August 13, 2010 1:11 am

good news on katina. i know he is in town. probably been watching practice. go look for a 6’2″/240 lber on the sidelines.

i think grayshirting him will be beneficial. i imagine iosefa will open some eyes.

  6. al August 13, 2010 1:13 am

actually it is still a bit early.

some say a northwestern wide receiver is visiting this weekend?

rahmel dockery i hear his name.

    any truth?

smurf sized although a bit bigger than sampson but just as fast.

  7. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2010 1:17 am

Word on the boulevard is Dockery and a teammate are here on a visit. Dockery is indeed bigger than Sampson. Dockery has a firm offer from Oregon State, or so I hear.

  9. al August 13, 2010 1:23 am

my take on colt has been that he must have opened some eyes these past few days. at second year pay he would be a bargain for the raiders to bring him along as the eventual 3rd string guy. why rush him along?

maybe they can cut a deal for one of the injured qb’s once they recover for some kind of compensation in next year’s draft.

the raiders long known for the vertical game have longed for a gunslinger of a qb. colt is that guy if he is given the right opportunity. the raiders haven’t had a decent passing game in 4-5 years. do you think that jason campbell is the answer?

the kicker is that al davis wanted to pick colt up.

  10. Michigan Warrior August 13, 2010 1:25 am

As long as Cravens is healed and ready to go. Hate to see him rush back into action, only to aggravate his shoulder even worse.

Too bad we didn’t get to see Colt last night. Hopefuly, they are giving him the extra time to learn plays, and possibly put him in next week. Was good to see McBriar booming punts, though.

    Gratz to biggestuhfan!

  11. al August 13, 2010 1:28 am

pairing teammates is a good way to recruit.

remember how it worked for notre dame.

    paipai/alema,

  12. Michigan Warrior August 13, 2010 1:30 am

I agree, Al! With the positive comments prior to this game, it would be really odd that they were not interested in seeing what he can do… and at a bargain price to boot!

  13. al August 13, 2010 1:30 am

i’ll go out on a limb and say that we’ll end up 8-5 regular season.

  14. al August 13, 2010 1:33 am

michigan…i think they didn’t want to rush him along. he’ll stick around this week and if continues to impress and progress he’ll be difficult to let go.

if colt plays and practices like the colt we’d seen colt will end up the backup by year’s end.

  15. Stephen Tsai August 13, 2010 1:39 am

Colt seems affordable, at this point. Colt just needs to be Colt.

There’s a newscaster who’s just hysterical. But he held back when he was on the air. He needed to be himself. Colt needs to be be Colt.

Sampson looked pretty solid last night when he was in there with the first string. Since it was a raiders broadcast they raved on about how good Lechler was but I think Mcbriar out kicked him by a mile.

I wonder if the State is paying 2.5 million or they are paying 1.25 million like Doc said yesterday. I have to assume 1.25 million because paying 5 million for a surface other people are getting for $500k is ridiculous. Well, so is paying 2.5 million.

  31. rage777 August 13, 2010 5:46 am

Article about Jerry Buss and the TV industry. It says how he brought Prime Ticket to Hawaii.

A USC alum, Buss was also keen on having as many Trojans events to go with UCLA, the University of Hawaii and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as the channel was beamed into Hawaii and Nevada as well.

  32. Annoddah Dave August 13, 2010 5:52 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

No matter what, Hawaii always pay more for stuff. The 2,500 miles of water from the West Coast ain’t free! So goes any shipping from the continental US to Alaska and Puerto Rico, as well. It may be better just to plant grass, at least the sun is free, rain is free, and fertilizer is free if the grass is cut by a bunch of goats that are overseen by “staring men”.

    Go Warriors!!!

    http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/24549/case-keenum-fights-system-qb-label

What sets Chang, Brennan, Keenum and even Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore apart from Tebow is that they all play at non-AQ schools, where players have an increasingly difficult time being taken seriously. The schedules they play are not the same caliber as the ones players at Florida or Texas or USC play. So “system quarterback” seems to stick to those players who put up the really eye-popping passing numbers against lower-quality opponents.

  71. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 13, 2010 8:32 am

I rarely get a chance to write anything bloggy until late or first thing in the morning before I head off to fight dragons and both times seem to be the trigger for a new blog from Stephen. Here’s what I wrote last around 12:15 am:

If Colt is playing for the Raiders on October 31, 2010 – and I mean actually playing, not parking his okole on a bench somewhere – I will treat every Tsai-ko with an October birthday or a wedding anniversary (with spouse) to dinner at Roy’s in Hawaii Kai that evening. Costumes optional.

If he’s playing for any other team in the NFL – same offer but at Tsukiji’s.

If he’s out of footballl altogether, then it’s takeout chili from Zippy’s at the next T-Gate. Anyone who wants some can have a bowl or two.

When are the Wahine volleyball and football season tickets going to be mailed out?

One last comment on the contracts for any public project in Hawai`i. All the records are public and it you think that there might be a connection between campaign contributions and contracts awarded, all you have to do is get copies of both & compare them line by line.

However, and this is really, really important to remember: Honolulu is the smallest town in the whole wide world. Everyone who’s in business – no matter field – or in politics or works for a non-profit or the government as a civil servant has no more than a three degrees of separation. I”ve met people standing outside a hearing who have the craziest connections to me which I never knew until I met them: the business manager for the guy who repairs our car or the ex-husband of the new daughter-in-law of the woman who is my workout partner or the wife of the undertaker who cremated six of our pets.

When the first question you ask when you meet someone for the first time who grew up in Hawai`i is “Where you wen’ high school?” – you’re going to see a lot of contributions. But at least they’re visible & accessible.

It’s hiding behind the PACs that’s the killer of good government.

I am going to be posting information this evening about a major huge community service project I’m coordinating next week which includes three less physically-challenging opportunities for volunteers: A Hawaii Food Bank Drive, a Lightulb for CFL Bulb Exchange, and a HI-5 Fundraiser for us. Others will be going out along and on/in the four major waterways surrounding Kailua Town to clean out trash before the rainy season comes. At noon, there’ll be a Pau Hana Barbecue with drawings for lots of STUFF including two tickets to a Wahine Volleyball match.

After three months of work and planning I am proud to annouce the revitalization of the “Na Wahine Softball Booster Club” we are now officially open for business. If you would like to join us in helping the Na Wahine please join us, click on my name to go to our website where you will find an application form for membership. We have put a lot of work into the site as we are trying our best to include all of the Alumnae. We will have pages for each team since the first one in 1985. Mind you it is still isn’t complete yet, we have a lot of catching up to do.

Am proud to say that all of the Board of Directors and Officers of the club are Tsaikos, so come join us in supporting one of the best team at UH.

  148. Curt August 13, 2010 2:15 pm

    al,

I hope you’re right about Colt too. I was a little apprehensive about the idea that he had to perform well with so little time with the new offense, playbook, coaches, and receivers. He’s such an accurate QB. But, he needs time and reps to get in sync with his new team. So, I’m hoping it’s a blessing in disguise. If he doesn’t play the next game, that would surely be a bad, bad sign.

Congratulations on establishing the Wahine Softball Booster Club. Back in the not-so-long-ago-day – the 2005 season which is when we started going to the games – there were maybe 30 of us regulars sitting along the third base side. The number of fans really didn’t increase that much until this past season.

Was there an initial meeting open to all the regular sotball game attendees to set up the club? If so, I’m sorry we missed it. Re-invigorating the Wahine Softball Booster Club is important enough to set aside the time to get involved.

As for the Tsai-kos, I recognized a number of faces from T-Gates starting with the 2009 season. Thanks for joining The Dedicated & Faithful like the three older couples who sit to the left of us who probably started coming to the games 20 years ago. Will anyone distributing information about the Booster Club at the games to the regulars who aren’t Tsai-kos?

Look forward to seeing T-Folks at the games both this fall (exhibition) and next winter/spring.

    AussieMom.

Is Victorian Bitter one of your top beers? Last time I was in Richmond, I picked up a case. Loooove it. But then again, I’m American and couldn’t tell the difference between a good beer and a bad one.

  223. wafan August 13, 2010 9:03 pm

    Shoko . . .

Sorry, had to take care of something. What W-Doc said is correct. 2nd year is just as bad as 1st year — all of those little tweaks to lesson plans and instructional methods.

I was just wondering if he is doing okay.

  224. Shoko August 13, 2010 9:08 pm

Thanks, Wafan. No problem. Have a friend that teaches 7th grade Hawaiian history. He always tells me the it takes a few years to perfect the lesson plan. 🙂

  225. Aussie mum August 13, 2010 9:09 pm

    Shoko,

Victorian Bitter (VB) is certainly not my favourite but is very popular. There are many others which have a less bitter taste= I prefer champagne! Were you in Richmond, Victoria?- it is only a 10 minutes from where we live, if you are here again please contact me, you would be most welcome at our place. ( except October as we will be visiting you).

  226. Shoko August 13, 2010 9:16 pm

    AssuieMom,

Yes, I was fortunate to visit Australia. Very beautiful. My last visit, I stayed at the Richmond Panther’s Casino. which is just across the rugby stadium. I’m sure you heard of it. We took the transit to Sydney, we had a very good time and had the chance to talk with the locals who, by the way, were very friendly and actually took the time to cater to us Americans.

    Shoko,

I’m glad you enjoyed your visit and we think Australia is beautiful too. Sydney is certainly lovely, the harbour is spectacular, I travel to Sydney to visit my sister and always love it. I’m surprised you bought VB in Richmond, New South Wales as it is a Victorian beer and there has always been ‘friendly’ turf wars with the beers of the different states. Any Victorian would say that you had a great taste for beer!!

KGMB news is showing a clip of Ikaika Mahoe (D) in a one-on-one with a O-lineman who is taller/bigger than he is. O-line wins. Good for our O.

    Midnight,

Not a sound from the pavement

Has the moon lost her memory?

    She is smiling alone…..

Again, I ask – when will season tickets arrive for Wahine volleyball & football. The first match is now 13 days away and the first game 19 away.

Any idea when the softball party is going to be?

Another busy busy day – be back sometime this evening.
