Bronson, Rolovich campaign

With UH fans being able to get a national award for running back Alex Green, now they have a chance to do the same for center Bronson Tiwanak.

Warrior fans may vote for Tiwanak at: Rudy Award.

And Nick Rolovich is up for quarterback coach of the y ear: Rolovich.

Rolo is the guy not pictured wearing a coat and tie.

I’m glad Alex Green won the online National Award, but I’m wondering how he won when that other guy if front of him was at 38% at the very last moment. Oh who cares! Alex won!

Tiwanak has 1% of the votes. How did that guy from Texas A&M get a jump and already have 44%? It would be nice to have their positions posted after their names.

The voting site uses a third party cookie from poll.{something}. If you are like me and disable that, you can let the third party cookie prompt you then accept it (you don’t have to always accept it because it’s just one cookie). Although I deleted the cookie, files, and browsing history and it wouldn’t let me vote twice.

  54. rage777 December 2, 2010 9:09 am

The cookie was poll.websitegear.com and you have to accept it twice, once to get to the page and once when you vote. I did close my browser delete my cookie and I was able to vote again.

Early Christmas Wish list for the Warriors in recruiting.

    1) Depth for the defensive line. (3)

    2) Depth for the offensive line. (3)

    3) Depth for the Cornerback (2)

    4) Depth for Safety (3)

    5) Depth for Linebacker (2)

    6) Depth for Receivers (4)

    7) Running back (1)

    8) Depth for defensive ends (3)

    9) Athlete (returner) (1)

    Total – 22

We lose 3 starting receivers, plus Henry and Blount. We lose the entire secondary. We still have Torres and Kenny Estes coming back. Tank Hopkins will return next year and will compete for cornerback w/ John Hary-Tuliau, Lewis Walker, and Dee Maggit. McBride in the mix along w/ Sellers, Ornellas, and others. We lose 4 starting offensive linemen and need to get some replacements for next year and the future. We need a big time pass rusher and defensive tackes more so for the folloing year when we go into the Mountain West. Defensive line should be okay for next year, but we need to look for the future. We need a kick, punt returner ala Chad Owens. We need to find one like that. We need to find someone who can kick the ball into the end zone. It could be a walk-on. We need at least 1 running back to replace Green and Dimude. We have Iosefa, Monico, Lister, and Jackson in the program right now. Somebody has to step up. We can use some speed back there.

Who is the back up punter right now behind Dunnachie? We should be okay for next year in Quarterbacks, but we need to look for one the following year. Either Graves, Shutter, Nielson, or Spain has to step up to show who is going to take over after Moniz and Austin leaves after next season. Moniz and Austin are the clear 1, 2 for next year.

  68. A COUPLE OF QUICK REMINDERS:

Got HI-5 cans & bottles at home? Coming to the T-Gate on Saturday? All proceeds wil be sent to Koa Anuenue on behalf of the Tsai-kos after the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl for the summer school tuition fund to be used for all sports. As of this writing, we are close to $150.

We’re also having our own HI-5 Drive on Sunday along with the re-scheduled Green Gifting Sale. Click my name above for details. Don’t worry – we keep accurate records so there won’t be any cross-over between the two drives.

An update on what we’re bringing to the T-Gate: Edamame w/fresh cherry tomatoes and Kirkland brand (from Costco) holiday Peppermint Bark candy. DrDoc will be there around 10 or thereabouts while I should arrive sometime around 2 pm. We’ll also be bringin information about the Green Gifting pre-Sale – orders only, no money collected.

As posted a couple of days ago, if you are interested in strengthening the connections between the Legislature and the University of Hawai`i’s long-term goals in inter-collegiate athletics, I can help set up a meeting with key leaders in the State Senate whose committees they chair will have a direct impact on any proposed laws. They are interested in hearing from people out in the community. As a time-saver for the elected officials, a small group meeting would be the most effective way of getting The Cause(s) advanced.

As of this writing, the State House is not organized.

Finally – Where can we buy here on O`ahu the WAC Championship tees other than at Rainbowtique? I would prefer a green or black shirt – not white. Ordering something over the Internet is not a possibility for us – unless the company uses PayPal or accepts (real) checks.

Great article on Bronson…and all the articles to date for that matter…good job ST…keep it coming.

One thing I’m most proud of regarding UH athletics is that we seem to have great kids in the program. Recruiting kids with skills and most importantly, character is difficult but the coaches have done a great job.

My wish is that we don’t have Scam Newton type stories hitting the media.

  104. NCAA December 2, 2010 10:24 am

Time is fleeting because when Warrior football season starts mostly everyone says, “is it Saturday yet?” Then when the season ends it’s, “Is it spring yet?” and then it’s, “Fall camp yet?”. A never ending fleeting cycle of Warrior football.

Northern Colorado just got out of Division 2 football.

2007 was special for a multitude of reasons. I think even the most hardcore UH fans can easily look back on that entire college football season as one of those rare instances where people above us kept losing and we kept winning despite situations we should have lost.

I think MANY here still believe the 2006 team was better in all aspects of the game than the 2007 team. In 2007, we had a lot of things falling into place in our favor to get that BCS bid.

In that sense, it was a once in a lifetime type of season. HOWEVER, this season proves that getting ranked and possibly getting in the hunt for a BCS bid IS NOT a once in a lifetime opportunity.

  112. madeinhawaii December 2, 2010 10:43 am

    NCAA…

Just about anybody can play soft tennis and 99% of the time the ball won’t hurt you.. unless you are at the net and the guy hitting back is at the net too. Less stress on the arm at impact. It’s a good sport for the weekend warrior. Fun for all ages…

  113. Kazz December 2, 2010 10:45 am

There should be a “soft” everything.

Wonder what Soft Football would be like? Soft Basketball? Soft Golf? Soft Softball???? 😆 😆

(if you write down or say “soft” enough times it doesn’t even look or sound like a word anymore…)

  114. madeinhawaii December 2, 2010 10:54 am

    Kazz…

    Soft football is.. Foozeball.. remember?

Soft tennis is played with very light, loosely strung rackets.. and a very soft.. thin skinned rubber ball about the same size as a tennis ball.. When you put a spin on it, it deforms because it is that soft.

  115. Mari December 2, 2010 10:55 am

    Still in our thoughts, Colt.

Still in our thoughts, Colt, of course!

  116. NCAA December 2, 2010 10:56 am

But as a competitive sport in High School? I would think a game like ping pong would be more suited since it is played competitively in many countries. Games can’t be rained out. Ball won’t hurt you, way less stress on the arm than a tennis racket, can carry your equipment in your pocket, can practice in your garage or patio, featured in more movies…

  117. NCAA December 2, 2010 10:57 am

    Nerf makes soft anykine balls.

  118. NCAA December 2, 2010 11:00 am

Some how JP’s basketball blog doesn’t make me feel good. Always seems negative. No wonder he has no responses on his blog.

  124. papajoe2 December 2, 2010 11:22 am

#84 al’s posts. pix #1 light is off. pix #2 light is just turning on. pix #3 light is definitely on. Game over. Only thing is: is his hands/finger still touching the ball in #3? #2 to me says TOO LATE. Since it was the end of the game, can we appeal? The game would go back to the score of Hawaii 52 Cal P. 51 because of no time left on the clock. Cannot replay the end of the game because it ended with Hawaii up.

  125. NCAA December 2, 2010 11:35 am

    Kazz,

#111 ~ The 2007 UNLV game in LV & the No.CO game are the ONLY games I’ve seen from the 2006 & 2007 years. I was in AZ & not watching UH games until 2007 (UNLV). That’s all I have for comparison (in my memory) when people talk about those seasons, but it reinforced why those guys were truly special. As I noted last night, the QB-receiver corps made it look SO easy. The KO return for TD by Michael Washington was fun to watch. LWJ had some great runs in that game.

Don’t get me wrong. I love this year’s team, too. They just have a different mix of talent and are winning games their own way with their different strengths.

Someday I’ll have to borrow tapes or DVDs of other games to see the rest of the 2006 & 2007 seasons.

  157. Kazz December 2, 2010 3:04 pm

I DVR’d the entire 2007 season for a friend that was living in Japan at the time. He’s a MASSIVE UH fan and it killed us that he was missing the moments.

I ended up with those DVDs as he gave them back to me when he came back to Hawaii.

    I NEVER watched them.

I dunno… Some people like to watch old games, but once a new season starts, the past is dead to me. I DVR’d and saved the Tuscaloosa Super Regionals for softball last season and had them saved up until two months ago. 2011 softball is going to start soon and it’s a whole new season to focus on.

I don’t like to retain old games.

  217. Kazz December 2, 2010 5:29 pm

    UH 26

    PSU 38

    Halftime

Lady Vikings getting some real seperation now.

This is the first road trip for Jackson and Haydel and kind of a do-over for Kuehu and Ayabe on the road as well.

Need to pull it together at the half.

UH with 5 turnovers to PSU’s 3. Nice that they’re keeping it at a minimum.

Shooting for the Wahine is at around 36-37 % compared to PSU’s 41-42%.

  218. madeinhawaii December 2, 2010 5:30 pm

  219. Ralph December 2, 2010 5:30 pm

Na Wahine down 36-24 with under 30 seconds in the half. UH took one 3 pt shot, PSU took 14 and made 6.

UH playing a slow half court offense, Kanekoa walks the ball up from the back court. Very deliberate and slow offense, seems like PSU is moving the ball quicker, getting open looks especially the 3’s

  220. koakane™ December 2, 2010 5:31 pm

d1 so where you saying there is caps to purchase?

  221. Ralph December 2, 2010 5:32 pm

38-26 at the half, PSU up. Jackson doing well for Na Wahine, she needs support and she didn’t start the game.

  222. Ralph December 2, 2010 5:36 pm

looking at live stats, Jackson may have started.

  223. Kazz December 2, 2010 5:36 pm

Kamilah Jackson leads the Wahine with 10 points and is 5-6 from the field.

Megan Tinnin only has 2 points. Our best 3 pointer is being handcuffed right now compared to PSU’s #23 with a WHOPPING 16 points in the first half.

Kuehu has 5, Arbuckle and Kanekoa with 4 a piece.

Offensive rebounds are pretty much equal with UH at 6 and PSU at 5. Defensive rebounds are even at 19 for both teams.

  224. Kazz December 2, 2010 5:43 pm

    DreamSicle14,

Is there a $$$$ amount at the minimum that the band is trying to raise?

  225. Hilosupaman December 2, 2010 5:45 pm

    Still in our thoughts, Colt

    Go Warriors!

  226. Ralph December 2, 2010 5:45 pm

Tinnin needs to learn how to move without the ball and find an open spot. But then again our guards move the ball around the perimeter at a slow pace giving the defense time to cover Tinnin.

If we had the speed of the Ole Miss guard we’d have a lot of open looks at the basket. UH needs to work on their spacing and pace of their passing to give Kuehu and Tinnin open looks, and drives to the hoop will open up shots in the paint by Jackson and Arbuckle.

Hopefully Coach Dana can get them energized in the second half, they seem to play a step too slow.

    UH 50

  243. Kazz December 2, 2010 6:19 pm

Stats are almost even at this point.

UH now shooting 42% to PSU’s 41%, turnovers are UH with 12 and PSU with 10.

One glaring difference is from behind the arch. UH is 0 to PSU’s 33%.

    UH 56

    PSU 62

    5:23 2nd Half.

  244. duffer December 2, 2010 6:20 pm

8-15 from the foul line…gotta get better. Plus 12 TO’s.

Arbuckle on the verge with 4 fouls.

    UH 58

    PSU 67

    4:01 2nd Half

  246. Ralph December 2, 2010 6:24 pm

UH is 0-3 in 3 point shots, on the home court they took a lot of 3 pointers and made a good share, I wonder why they won’t take more shots from the arc?

  247. Kazz December 2, 2010 6:24 pm

    Duffer,

That is about HALF of what they’ve been averaging. In that category and on the road, that is a positive.

    Got gettum the next game!

  255. Kazz December 2, 2010 6:37 pm

    FINAL

    UH Rainbow Wahine 66

    Portland State Lady Vikings 77

Stellar game for Kamilah Jackson tonight. 22 points, 11-14 from the field and 13 rebounds

Hardluck from the arch as I think the Wahine have some issues with creating their own shots.

One BIG positive is the minimization of turn-overs for this road game. The Wahine, under Coach Dana have been playing hard-nosed inspired basketball, but have been careless quite a bit with the rock. Averaging about 20-25 turnovers in a game. Tonight, they yielded 12 turnovers.

Another positive is Shawna-Lei Kuehu is finding her offensive touch again as she finished with 16 points and was 7 for 11 from the field.

It will be a long month for the Wahine as I believe they stay on the road until the end of December.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching this team perform several times this season while sitting behind the bench and I like their spirit and tough play. Main thing is to keep everyone together and avoid injuries while on the road.

Build on the minimization of turnovers and go from there.

  256. Ralph December 2, 2010 6:39 pm

Na Wahine fall 77-66. Congratulations to Jackson, she had team highs in points, 22, rebounds with 10 with zero TO. Our bench went 0-14 from the field, with Haydel scoring 3 from the FT line. UH was 1-7 from the 3’s, PSU 8-25, and the rest of the stats came out close except the final score.

  257. Kazz December 2, 2010 6:42 pm

    Duffer,

Will you be able to make it back to Oahu sometime soon to see the Wahine in person?

I forget but I think they are headed to the Big Island this month at the end of their mainland portion of their road trip.

  258. Ralph December 2, 2010 6:42 pm

Tinnin launched only one 3 pointer in 22 minutes of play. UH career leader in 3’s takes one shot in the game is highly unusual.

  259. Ralph December 2, 2010 6:47 pm

Jackson is accumulating a lot of double-double, once she figures out how to shoot a left handed scoop shot she’ll be devastating on offense.

  260. Pomai December 2, 2010 6:53 pm

As the MWC and BWC decisions move closer to resolution, I often wonder what has made UH so “attractive” the past few weeks when a few days before that they were not considered worthy of membership.

Is the MWC really that desperate to add UH so it becomes closer to AQ status? “Adding” 3 conference co-champs is not too shabby who may also be ranked within the top 25 in 2010.

Why are several current conference Presidents spewing statements that can be considred derogatory to “adding” UH as a member? Is this their true feeling or just media fodder to squeeze all the “juice” out of UH for entry?

The MWC history, from it’s beginning, has been clouded in secrecy, vengence, and may be deceit. I find it difficult to now accept their “olive branch”.

One must wonder if Boise St, Reno, Fresno St and Hawaii had remained in the WAC if they would be closer to AQ status than the current MWC inasmuch as BYU, Utah, and TCU are leaving. Thompson must have known that the 3 schools would leave and had to shore up his AQ status dream. Thus, the invites to the top 4 WAC football schools.

As such, who is more important to whom and what will the “negotiations” bring to the table?
