Field work

6-group

There was a large enough  turnout for today’s unsupervised workouts — more than 60 players — to run stations for offensive linmen, defensive linemen, linebackers and ball-handling players. The 90-minute workout concluded with 11-on-11 drills. Among the highlights:

• Freshman defensive end Beau Yap made a sack.

• Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga and strong safety Spencer Smith had back-to-back interceptions.

• Facing a seven-blocker line, Meatoga, noting the offense was tipping off its plays, juked his way in for a sack.

• Even newcomer kicker Tyler Hadden was able to get in a lot of work.

Rush end Travis LaBoy and nose tackle Isaako “Isaac” Sopoaga of  the San Francisco 49ers are working out at UH for  at least another week. Both, of course, are former Warriors.

Linebacker Akoni Lasconia said he is on track to join the Warriors in August. The last hurdle is earning an associate’s degree, which he should receive after completing summer-session work. Leeward Community College’s Summer Session II ends Aug. 13 — nine days after the start of the Warriors’ training camp. Lasconia, who has been invited to camp, cannot participate in team activities until he earns his associate’s degree. Lasconia, an outside linebacker who last played at Saddleback Community College, is 6 feet 2 and 240 pounds.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Top 10!

Annoddah Dave – due to ST’s unavailability, the Blog Bash has been cancelled for this year. This leaves us *plenty* of time to plan for next year’s bash!

Welcome home to our former Warriors. Heard Travis yesterday on the Animals.

    Have fun dj!

CRW – if you’re around – does the water in DC still taste really bad?

I really had fun at the Christmas Party back in 2008 – maybe we should plan another one at Murphy’s or at one of the places I wrote about the other day.

Looking forward to today’s CC – a welcome break from listening to fulminations and ignorant blather.

First I want to thank all of you who have gave to the Na Wahine bracelet fund, we have reached our goal in less than three weeks. Many of you donated online and emailed me to let me know, so thanks a lot. Those of you that sent in checks if you would send me an email I will be sure to let you know that it was received. A few I know but a lot I didn’t recognize the names. I will be taking the checks up to UH this morning. Will meet with Coach Dee to make sure we have all the girls names and sizes, so they can place the order ASAP. Will have more later when Coach Coolen returns on when and where they will be presented. Also if you have not sent in a donation an still wish to, go ahead because I am sure we will be doing this again next year. GO NA WAHINE

Thanks to Kazz for his help.

  20. Garret June 30, 2010 7:50 am

Article in the Mercury News gives Tomey’s take on BSU’s departure from the WAC.

“It takes away from the overall respect the WAC has nationally,” former SJSU coach Dick Tomey said. “But — and I’m not trying to be flippant about it — it gives somebody else a chance to win the conference.

“For San Jose State, it’s one less game on the schedule that’s very difficult to win.”

Boise State, which has won three of the past four WAC football titles, will spend one more season in the league before jumping to the Mountain West Conference, where the competition is stiffer but the rewards greater: The Broncos could earn $2.6 million more annually in the Mountain West than in the WAC, according to an analysis by the Idaho Statesman.

  21. Garret June 30, 2010 7:52 am

Mention about the possible loss of TV and bowl money.

WAC officials had anticipated Boise State’s move for months, but that doesn’t alleviate the pain of losing a team that reached the Bowl Championship Series two of the past four years.

Each appearance generated millions for BSU and six-figure paychecks — income that had not been budgeted — for the other eight schools.

BSU brought national exposure to the league in the same fashion that Gonzaga basketball draws attention to the West Coast Conference.

BSU also was the driving force behind the WAC’s $4 million annual contract with ESPN, which has the option to renegotiate the deal when the Broncos depart.

And it remains to be seen whether the WAC’s bowl partners will renew their contracts without Boise State involved.

  22. Garret June 30, 2010 7:56 am

Colorado wants to join the Pac-10 for the 2011 season, but they don’t want to give up all the $10+ million that the Big 12 would give them for the 2010 season. Not wanting to leave that money behind might have them leave the Big 12 in 2012 instead.

Colorado was at or near the bottom the the Big 12 and brought nothing to the table in terms of TV revenue or NCAA basketball money…and they still got over $10 million from their conference while UH is getting less than $1 million from the WAC this year.

The Buffaloes would prefer to leave after next season like the University of Nebraska, which is joining the Big Ten in 2011.

That could prove costlier for Colorado, but the Big 12 might also decide it’s better for the Buffaloes to leave after next school year and agree to a lower penalty fee.

Big 12 bylaws require CU to forfeit half its Big 12 revenue distributions for the next two school years in order to leave the league. According to IRS tax records examined by The Associated Press, the Big 12 paid out $10,135,802 to Colorado in 2008-09.

That would make the buyout around $10 million, although Bohn said the cost for leaving after one year is undefined.

  23. Shoko June 30, 2010 8:10 am

Thought the B12 bylaw was clear. Abide by the 2-year exit clause and out fee would be reduced by 50% or 10 million. If not, Colorado pays double – 20 million. Clarification anyone?

  32. Buffoman June 30, 2010 8:49 am

    A thought.

I believe we all agree and hope JD and others are on the same page. UH football team has to win. I am not of the belief as others are that a slim winning record is sufficient. I believe it has to be a convincing one to have people perceive that the tide has indeed turned. In other words, no less than 9 wins.

Second, staying with Garret’s comments and research regarding UH’s weak BCS rated non-conference schedule. Here’s the thought. If you don’t get anything from this in BCS points, it damn well has to do two things, make us a ton of money and we have to win. Not separate, but both need to happen. If not, then why not do the big payday, “body bag” games. You get recruits, exposure (even if we get smoked) and we get dollars.

Third, as a contingency plan, I am hoping that JD and Hinshaw are quietly about town looking for dollars. What I’m referencing is dollars pledged “IF” we fall flat in the season (football). These dollars would be used to buy out Mac. Given what it would take to do it, I don’t believe JD can muster up the dollars as quickly as he did for Nash. Better start early.

Fourth, I agree with Tomey. Have all along. So, my thought is, why are the ADs and presidents just sitting and waiting for the other shoe to drop. I don’t get it. Can’t these people go beyond what is there. Pool the money, fire Benson and hire Uberoth (sp?), go talk to that billionaire who owns Oracle in Silicon valley. Convince him to buy the conference and incent some BCSers to jump over. Do something different, as it is getting embarrassing when folks like Tomey and others are willing to go public and diss the conference. Which, by the way, is the truth.

  35. Shoko June 30, 2010 9:02 am

As much as I am disillusioned by Karl Benson, I would think that firing him would require an act of God or, realistically, a unanimous decision by university presidents.

If only UH had benefactors such as Oregon’s Knight and Killkenny.

Couldn’t BSU hold out longer to join Big 12 instead of MWC? They surely can beat any one of them and earn more than $2.6 Million plus by joing Big 12, I would think. Plus it will boost BIG 12 ranking for BCS rating, and more than replace low standing Colorado leaving… No?

    Okole Maluna,

The Big 12 doesn’t need to add any teams to boost their BCS rating. Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, etc., have earned much more BCS points than are required to keep AQ status.

There is no need for BSU to wait to join the MWC. If BSU gets an offer for the Pac-10 or Big 12, they would be out the door right away. The MWC has *no* exit fee. So, BSU would gain nothing by staying in the WAC and in the meantime they can enjoy the millions more the MWC will get them.

  74. SteveM June 30, 2010 10:55 am

d1島 — thanks. Yes, feeling better and would seem all right except for the coughing fits from a sensitive throat. I think people would feel more comfortable if I stayed home. I should be OK in a couple days.

  75. Garret June 30, 2010 10:57 am

A bidding war is already starting over the Pac-10’s next TV contract. The disturbing development here is that ESPN is expected to big aggressively to take the Pac-10 rights away from Fox. Sports Business Journal says that ESPN wants the Pac-10 for their late night time slot…that would mean they would be showing Pac-10 games instead of WAC games and the WAC would lose that late night time slot.

In fact, the bidding war over the Pac-10’s TV rights already is developing, leading some industry executives to predict that the conference’s windfall could hit ACC-type numbers. In May, ESPN agreed to pay $1.86 billion over 12 years for the ACC’s rights. That deal hasn’t been finalized.

The Pac-10’s current deals with ESPN and Fox Sports Net end in 2012, and sources say that the two networks already are informally making their interest known via several events that have been set up with Pac-10 coaches in New York, Los Angeles and Bristol, Conn.

I’d be shocked if ESPN didn’t make a strong bid. ESPN loves college sports. It has extensive deals with the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12 and could use the Pac-10’s later windows to round out its schedule.

ESPN recently sent word to the conference that it is interested in discussing a possible channel partnership, sources say. The move is a significant one for ESPN, which in the past has tried to keep conferences like the SEC from launching such a channel, and it shows that ESPN will be a serious bidder.

But ESPN isn’t alone. I expect Fox will also make a significant bid for the broadcast and cable rights. Since Chase Carey returned to Fox last summer, the broadcaster has become more aggressive about adding sports to its programming lineup. Just last month, for example, Fox nearly stole the ACC’s rights from ESPN. I can’t see the broadcaster passing on a conference that’s in its own backyard.

Fox has had preliminary conversations with the conference about a partnership on a channel that would be similar to the Big Ten Network, which, in the college world, is considered a runaway success. Fox owns slightly less than half of the channel.

  78. A-House June 30, 2010 11:05 am

Don’t remember if someone posted if the WC has an “exit fee”. This is the 1st thing the WAC should do while they are sitting on their collective rear-ends waiting for the sky to fall!!

Just like UH hs no “exit fee” for Coach Mack who will continue to receive his $1.1 million in year #4 and #5 IF he should get canned in 2010. My, my what a life to “make” that amount and not having to work.

Thrusts the ineptness of the General Counsel’s office at UH into the arena of public info. But, give Coach Macks’ attorney credit for securing the contract they did.

  79. Garret June 30, 2010 11:14 am

    A-House,

The WAC doesn’t have an exit fee, though BSU will be leaving behind the $1 million or so that they WAC would have given them for the 2010-2011 school year.

People in the media that talk about Colorado’s “exit fee” should point out that their exit fee is just that the Big 12 won’t give them the $10 million they would have gotten from 2011 (for the 2010-2011 school year), or they will give up $5 million in 2011 and $5 million in 2012. Colorado isn’t actually paying any money to the Big 12 if they leave after 2 years, they are just going to get “only” $5 million instead of $10 million each year.

  80. Garret June 30, 2010 11:16 am

    A-House,

When Karl Benson asked for WAC schools to pledge loyalty and make the exit something like $6 million, *UH* was one of the first schools to reject that. When he asked WAC schools again last year to sign a loyalty pledge, UH rejected that again. So, UH has made it clear that they want out of the WAC.

  86. Shoko June 30, 2010 11:57 am

Yikes, six million exit fee? I can’t see other WAC member schools accepting that loyalty pledge. Guess that’s reasonable for the WAC an other non-aq conferences. Wonder how much the MWC exit fee is, if there is one.

  87. madeinhawaii June 30, 2010 12:04 pm

They should have voted for the exit fee… 6 million is nothing compared to what you could get at the next level. You’d make it up in a year. But at least the 8 remaining teams would have been getting something or could have used some of that money as a signing bonus for a new member.

  88. Garret June 30, 2010 12:05 pm

    Shoko,

    MWC exit fee is $0.

  89. Garret June 30, 2010 12:07 pm

I’m glad that there was a good turnout for unsupervised workouts today.

Amber Kaufman wins WAC’s 2009-10 Joe Kearney Award

Kaufman, a senior from San Jose, Calif, was named an All-American in two sports this past year. She began the season by helping to lead the volleyball team to the Final Four in 2009 and was ranked fourth in the country in hitting percentage (.431).

In March, she was the runner-up in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship and then captured the national title in the event at the Outdoor Championship earlier this month. She has earned All-American honors in track and field five times during her career and also earned academic all-WAC honors all four years at Hawai‘i.

“Amber is an exceptional athlete who has world-class ability,” said Senior Woman Administrator Marilyn Moniz-Kaho‘ohanohano. “She has also performed well in the classroom and continues to succeed on both the volleyball court and in track and field. Her enthusiasm and motivation allowed her teammates to feed off of her on the volleyball court and her determination and exceptional leaping ability made her a national champion in track and field.”

Former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who was kicked off the team after repeated run-ins with the law, visited Louisiana Tech, a Monroe, La., TV station is reporting. Masoli, a native of Hawaii, visited La. Tech last weekend and is also going to visit Mississippi State, according to the report by KNOE-TV.

There was also a report couple of weeks ago about Utah State expressing interest, but that rumour couldn’t be substantiated.

  103. gigi-hawaii June 30, 2010 1:08 pm

Quarterbacks are supposed to be looked up to as they are considered leaders of the team. How can anybody respect Masoli after repeated arrests by the police? I think he is damaged goods already and should not be considered by other teams.

We all have to pick our battles, but we all have to support any way we can. Support it or you may lose it. It’s not funny that you find that the loudest critics and biggest cry babies are the one’s that give the least of anything. They always want something for nothing it seems.

If you want a winning program, you have to support that program…through thick and thin. That’s how you build character. That’s how you build leadership. That’s how you build loyalty. That’s how you build tradition.

You build a winning program through the commitment of the people.

  110. Seawalker June 30, 2010 1:21 pm

If Mac wants to keep his job, he should consider Masoli. Even if it’s for 1 year, he’s worth the hassles!

  111. SteveM June 30, 2010 1:23 pm

Watch Godgifu had me stumped for a while– especially with his references to living in New Jersey near N.Y.C. Then I realized he stopped there often, once enroute to the direct opposite side of the world from us*. This week’s comments really gave him away. 🙂

    * now the Tsai-ko cruisers know who he is, but many are at the CC anyway.

  112. GRM June 30, 2010 1:25 pm

Mac would LOSE his job if he picked up Masoli. We really don’t need a troubled young man at this point.

  113. jm2375 June 30, 2010 1:25 pm

I hope this means there won’t be another Cooke/Ching Field debacle. But I’m not gonna hold my breath.

University of Hawaii regents have approved new procedures that will enable university administrators to more efficiently procure goods and services.

The interim policies, endorsed at the regents’ meeting Monday, also will allow the university to more quickly award and issue contracts for capital improvement, and repair and maintenance projects.

  114. gigi-hawaii June 30, 2010 1:27 pm

I doubt Mack would invite Masoli to even be a walk on. I agree with GRM — who needs a troubled young man on the team?

If you mean Watch Godgifu, he is at today’s CC at Maple Garden. You know him, too?

  121. madeinhawaii June 30, 2010 1:51 pm

    Seawalker,

Your kidding about Masoli, right? Masoli isn’t a RnS QB… he doesn’t do the reads and can’t master it in a few weeks. Considering his supporting cast members, I don’t know if I’d even put him above Inoke Funaki, QB wise… certainly not character wise.

We got enough QBs… just gotta develop them and find the right mix for the rest of the offense. BUT we have a good group of young athletes that have every potential to be the team we want them to be in the next two -three years.

  122. gigi-hawaii June 30, 2010 1:57 pm

    MIH,

Wasn’t Masoli a student at St. Louis? Don’t they still use the R n S system that the Lee brothers established way back when? Just wondering.

  123. OH NO - NO START June 30, 2010 2:00 pm

gigi, please don’t start having discussions about the quarterback situation. We all know what happened the last time you got into that conversation.

  124. madeinhawaii June 30, 2010 2:01 pm

    gigi
I don’t think it’s quite the same brand of the RnS that the Warriors are developing… otherwise, I would think that Ron Lee would still be calling the plays.

  125. gigi-hawaii June 30, 2010 2:03 pm

#123 — No I don’t remember that quarterback situation of which you speak. Anyway, I wasn’t the one who broached the subject of Masoli. Scroll back and you will see.

jm2375 — I was hoping early July, but with my cough and myki heading out to Northern Europe next week already (and my cruise/neice’s wedding departure on the 14th), we might have to postpone until August.

Then we can debrief myki (or what she’ll admit) 🙂 and we can compare notes on the Norwegian Pearl as a possible Tsai-ko Alaska cruise venue (you can challenge ST to bowl). Maybe we can get Calvin from Kona too, if he wants some Alaska cruise tips for his September sailing.

Why not all these great Tsaiko people start contacting all the billionaires over the world who might want to help out the situation at UH. I’m pretty sure an emotional plea and the plight we are in being in the middle of the Pacific might stir a billionaire or 10, who may have an affection for the University and its state. In doing so memoralizing their name etc. etc.

You guys did it on a small scale with the bracelets for the softball team and the donation box at their games. If anyone think this may bear fruit start running with it. If not wishful dreaming again on my part.

Have to disagree with you about Coach Mack taking in Masoli. Taking someone of questionable / dubious character is never a good thing. Also, Masoli couldn’t run UH’s Offense if they gave him ALL the reps from now until game-time. He’s an option QB whose favorite plays are the QB-keeper and bootlegs. Are you trying to sabotage the team?

Get your cleats ready, Molokai, because the streak is over. After a 50 year hiatus, Molokai High School football is back in the lineup and will take to the field this fall.

The 1960-61 Farmers were the last high school football team on Molokai. The 1960-61 Farmers were the last high school football team on Molokai.“It’s going to be big,” said Mike Kahale, a physical education teacher at Molokai Middle School. “Our kids have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time.”

  154. Garret June 30, 2010 2:44 pm

Molokai will be with the smaller schools in Maui in an 8-man football league.

Although securing the funds for a traditional 11-man team was a stretch, it didn’t mean the sport couldn’t exist at all. This past year, smaller schools in Maui County began looking into an eight-man football league – which was recently sanctioned by the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) this fall to include Molokai, Seabury Hall and St. Anthony high schools.

Eight-man football has gained popularity in many rural areas on the mainland and allows small schools with small budgets a chance to play football.

Since the league doesn’t have the finances to cover tackle football off the bat, it will start small and slowly expand. The first year will be a passing league with full padding incorporated the second year, and full MIL sanctioning expected in the third year.

“It’s the only way to make it financially feasible,” Kahale said. “It’s a great way to introduce football fundamentals and to actually start. Why wait until next year?”

  155. gigi-hawaii June 30, 2010 2:47 pm

Regarding Masoli, I look at what he did for Oregon ON THE FIELD. Hell, if we had as talented QB as Masoli, we would be giving BS a run for their money. Yes, I agree, he is a troubled kid. But I also see an upside to this. The kid got talent. He needs a playing field to use that talent. If he’s available, we should get ’em. We just need one winner and the rest of the QBs will up their game. Let the team keep Masoli in check. Remember, no body said the Sugar was a one time deal!

I agree, Masoli by his actions just does seem to have his head screwed on properly. Not a rsik reward situation that favors the risk taker. Like many, too bad for the kid, really. Ultimately, it’s not the schools but the young man who stands to lose the most.

I just thought it was funny that the majority went straight to the Comments without actually commenting on the original topic.
I am happy to learn of developments like this. To me, it shows that the team is aware of the circumstances it faces, following this round of realignments. Everyone has to get serious and up their game for us to even have a chance at disproving the experts on our upcoming season. We have no choice but to overachieve. We have to be vicious, but in control. Play crazy, but smart. Let’s not have tons of personal foul penalties this year, please?
I hope our line on both sides comes together sooner, rather than later (preferably by the end of this summer!) And please work on wrapping up and playing disciplined ball!!! Please???

When you purchase a season ticket, how does that money get distributed? Does all the money stay with that particular sport/team or does it go into a “general” fund?

masoli can go hang out with mike vick.

c_c: you hit the nail right on the head.

Let me add that masoli is NOT an RnS QB. He is a rich rodriguez type QB, like he had at

W Va, and now at Mich. masoli would NOT be of help to our Warriors, in more than one way.

Is current 49er Sopoaga wearing Oakland Raiders gear?

  181. Stephen Tsai June 30, 2010 5:34 pm

    Matt:
Nope. At first, I thought that. But it’s actually generic NFL gear.

  182. Stephen Tsai June 30, 2010 5:35 pm

I thought I heard a report that Masoli was going to apply for the supplemental draft.
It would be tough to get picked, since the team would have to forfeit a corresponding pick in the 2011 draft. You know how protective teams are of draft picks, even late-round picks.

  183. Stephen Tsai June 30, 2010 5:39 pm

    MichiganWarrior:
I would have posted something on the WAC deciding not to expand except, basically, the WAC voted to do nothing. So, basically, that means there’s been no progress since Boise opted to leave three weeks ago.
I know the WAC would love to poach San Diego State or UNLV, but they want to keep their intentions a secret. That’s amusing since the MWC doesn’t keep secrets.

  184. madeinhawaii June 30, 2010 5:41 pm

I really feel bad for Greg Alexander. No one really will ever know how he would have done had he not gotten injured. Any word on what he’s been up to?

Pomai #12 Post: Kind sir when the donation from myself and Father skywalker arrives PLEASE let me know that the foundation has received it as you have my home e-mail address.

Your volleyball assistant coach Kari Ambrozich has met and talked to skywalker at the Phoenix Volleyball Festival. Coach e-mailed me June 29th and thank me on the info to her and stated “She is a very nice player with a lot of potential” as sky walker called her Father and gleem with happiness of meeting Hawaii !

Her stock is continue to rise as a prominent Pac 10 school and Big Ten school has confirm a full volleyball scholarship to her as she and Father ponder pro & con decesions together for this exciting moment !

I will be involve as an advisor to her evaluations of all interested schools as Father has requested that we sit down for dinner and go over everybody offer and team situation with academic standards, cultural enviroment and playing time status.

Mahalo for all the posters that responded “POSITIVE” to my introduction of lady sky walker as one thing I do very well is “know and recruit talent” as I have had the experience as a former athlete and I do it everyday here in LA on many different levels !

Just imagine what I could do for you in your men’s athletics BUT I am not mad or disappointed as I find other means and areas to use my talent !

Have a good evening Tsaiko Nation !

    Re: Benson interview.

He was really spinning it, wonder how much he really believes it himself, says WAC remains strong, no sense of panic etc.

According to Benson there were teams ready to accept WAC membership right now, including Div IA teams, but they decided it would be in their best interest to remain at 8 teams. Take that FWIW.

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana!

Welcome back, Gigi! I enjoy the Gracie Allen taste you bring to the blog.

Thanks for organizing the bracelet drive, Pomai and Kazz. You are an illustration of what we all have to do to make the UH a great place for sports, for learning, and for research. We should settle for nothing less than world class in all of those things. And beyond a certain point it isn’t about money; it is about a critical mass of committment, consensus, and solidarity. If we know who we are and what we want and are determined, every day, to go after it, to get better, to learn, to build, to unite, we will get there.

    Go Warriors!! Go Bows!!

agree with all who favor not to seeking masoli out.

enough qb’s, spend time developing the one’s we got now, no need any more drama focus on winning games, WAC and making a bowl.

I guarantee you cousin Masoli can beat out your quarterbacks. He showed great poise playing big games in front of thousands of fans. He was the star of the Rose Bowl. Even if he doesn’t start, he would make a difference as a back-up. Your offense is not that complicated. You just need a good athlete to run it. If you think outside the box, you could also move Masoli to running back. He would excel there.

I’ll bet you Masoli would be good for 1 or 2 wins. What would have happened last season with one more win?

  227. RedZone June 30, 2010 8:59 pm

1 or 2 wins won’t get you to a bowl game.

  234. cocbean June 30, 2010 9:14 pm

BSU is always way ahead of the curve. They’ve had 100% participation in off season workouts for years. It’s part of their football culture. New recruits must buy into this before signing on the dotted line. They’re always the best prepared team heading into a season. Their record reflects this. Hawkin’s success at BSU can be largely attributed to this. His so-soness at Colorado might because he could’nt establish the same culture there.
I hope the Warrior have a 100% participation by their olinemen. From scholarshippers to walk ons. Everyone knows this group holds the key to the offense. Play well, we’ll score. Give up too many sacks, the blogs will light up calling for Mack’s head. Now is the time for the leaders of this group(if there are any) to step up and ask everyone to give it their all, and a little more.

  240. madeinhawaii June 30, 2010 9:30 pm

Masoli would be a good fit for La Tech… as QB or RB.. not UH

  241. haka June 30, 2010 9:36 pm

Masoli would be a good misfit…

  242. Curt June 30, 2010 9:51 pm

    mih,

I agree. Masoli is talented but not a good fit for UH…not enough time to learn the R&S.

  243. Curt June 30, 2010 9:56 pm

I was looking at the passing stats and noticed that SMU QB Kyle Padron had a completion rate of 67.2% and QB rating of 159. Not bad considering in his first yr. June Jones might be developing a QB with almost Colt-like #s.

  244. d1島 June 30, 2010 9:59 pm

Your offense is not that complicated. You just need a good athlete to run it.

    Got Jeff George?

  245. Curt June 30, 2010 10:03 pm

    Bryant Moniz comp % = 57.1, QB rating = 128.4

    Greg Alexander comp % = 65.3, QB rating = 160.0

Too bad we didn’t have Greg for the whole season. Good news is that we have plenty of QBs to choose from. It could be Bryant, maybe Graves, maybe Rausch, maybe Gigi. 🙂

  246. Curt June 30, 2010 10:07 pm

    d1,

I don’t like the comment “Your offense is not that complicated.” It implies that it’s not difficult to pick up. As we all know, June says it takes at least a year to get the hang of it. I think I’ll go with June’s assessment.

  247. madeinhawaii June 30, 2010 10:12 pm

    Curt…
Got to agree.. Greg Alexander probably would have led the team to a bowl game. Even without Bradley.. The loss of Greg was bad enough but to lose your deep man, too? Then having to shift a RB converted to Slot to WR? Ouch! That was like having a six-shooter with 4 blanks and 2 bullets.

  248. Jason June 30, 2010 10:16 pm

I’m not supporting that Masoli come here, but wouldn’t he have to sit out a year anyways? Unless I’m understanding this wrong, he would have to sit out this year because of FBS transfer rules, just like Amani Purcell (and I think Travis LaBoy) had to sit out a year. He has two years to play one, so he would redshirt with UH (or LaTech, or Mississippi State, or whatever), then be eligible to play in 2011. Unless Garret (or someone else) can correct me on that …

  249. chawan_cut June 30, 2010 10:17 pm

why would we want masoli anyways? he didn’t fare any better against boise the last 2 years than we did… playing against the thousands(oooh 30k) at boise blue field… oh wait, he lost to them at your dreaded autzen field too.
hope he can handle the 20k that show up for la tech games.

  250. madeinhawaii June 30, 2010 10:17 pm

    Curt..

D1 was quoting someone else.. someone who was plugging for Masoli.

  251. Curt June 30, 2010 10:18 pm

    papajoe2,

I’ll project that our record this year will be 8-5. And we meet SMU in the Hawaii Bowl. And Tom Mui comes up with a new name/handle that confounds us all again.

  252. Curt June 30, 2010 10:23 pm

    mih,

Thanks. I reviewed my post and it did look like I was not happy with d1’s post. Not the case d1. Sorry about that. I knew it was someone else’s post.

They already are working to get robots to go into burning buildings and map things out for the firefighters, saving firefighter lives and locating people in the building that need to be rescued. The problem is that the communications can fail and then the robots aren’t any use to the firefighters. Fixing that will save lives.

  254. Garret June 30, 2010 10:25 pm

    Jason,

You are correct that Masoli won’t be able to play for anyone this season and will have to wait until 2011 to play for whatever team he transfers to.

Chinese companies “rent” white people to pretend that they are employees or business partners. This is related to the Chinese concept of “face”, where having a few foreigners around means that a company has prestige, money, and connections to businesses overseas. A lot of actors take these jobs because the requirements are just to be white, not speak any Chinese, and pretend that you just got off of an airplane yesterday.

  263. chawan_cut June 30, 2010 10:30 pm

speaking of robots, masoli’s robot passing motion won’t work here either. i’m pretty sure he didn’t have to make the on the fly reads and quick decisions that match the WRs in the UO offense like would be required here. and he was always given the green light to freak out and scramble when he didn’t make the right read. kinda like tebow but definitely not the same in character. we’ll see how tebow does on THE real broncos team in Denver. he’ll have to prove whether mr. meyer’s teachings will transfer over to the nfl. so far not so good. alex smith, chris leak….

Remember the MWC announced on a Monday that they were not going to expand this year. Then I think it was Thursday of the same week, they invited and BSU accepted. I don’t trust those clowns at all. They were the ones who bolted from us to begin with.
Today’s article on the subject reveals what many of us have known for some time. Karl Benson does have his ideas. Unfortunately for us, most times when he’s made suggestions, our Presidents, Chancellors, etc. have usually shot him down. Most of us will recall these events, but it’s good to see them listed in the article so that others will realize it’s not just up to him. It really makes you wonder about the (almost) power-tripping, shortsightedness of those in the WAC’s Ivory Towers. If we had taken some of his previous suggestions, prior to the defection of the MWC schools, would we be THE Mid-Major, awaiting AQ status into the BCS? Who knows?
At any rate, I just hope our Warriors continue to have a great, productive summer. We need to come out hot and cohesive from the first whistle, and not wait until we are four games into the season.
My wish list: Every WAC v. MWC game from here on out… we win!!! I mean, it would be nice to pull out the upset over those BCS schools once in a while, but let’s keep the MWC down where they belong!!! Please, bottom dwellers, pull out your Hail Mary Playbooks!

I’m up for being rented too, if anyone needs. I look good in a suit and can handle walking around, acting official, while having cute Chinese girls translating everything into English for me. But, I’m not white. Aww, man… sounds like there’s a Haiku in there somewhere… Rap Replinger style.

#272 Michigan Warrior, wow that job is almost as good as the one I have, which is watching the grass grow, pay is probably better to.

With APR rules nowadays, programs need to be careful with transfers. We need to make sure that transfers are not just free agent athletes, but that they are also commtted to academic excellence. Of course we want the best athletes, but we must not lose scholarships because of athletes that aren’t serious about working towards graduating. It’s great that Mack has emphasized having former athletes come back to Manoa to finish what they started academically. It’s definitely a win-win situation for all.

With academics in mind, Mr. Tsai. Knowing that Laupepa Letuli graduated from school this spring, what kind of courses will he be taking this fall? Will he get started on a master’s program?

    Garret,

Do you still play the Wii? I still have the one you sent us. Most recently, David bought the Tiger Woods Golf Wii. It was very difficult for him and he worked up a sweat playing the game.

    😯 😉 😆
Thankfully, it didn’t cost him $750M to “play the game” like Tiger!

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Happy Birthday to K. Mark Takai!! Hope your ankle is getting better.

It’s a little wet here in Kailua. Everybody stay dry and have a great day!

Richard Torres calling the defensive plays yesterday in the 11-on-11s? Future UH DC? 😀

276 -The only thing Benson has up his sleeve is arm pit odor.

  282. Buffoman July 1, 2010 7:03 am

I’ll give benson the benefit of the doubt.

My hope would be that he has sway with SDSU and UNLV and would convince them back to the WAC. That being said, if that should happen, we should all sit at the table and enjoy eating crow. I’ll be the first to eat my piece as I have not been one who has thought Benson has been a good leader. Then again, from the article this morning, our college presidents should also be dinged for being so out of it in the process.

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Happy Birthday Mr. Takai!

    Garret,

I’ve always wondered why coaches have contracts that run for x years. Why can’t coaches be like regular employees where their job continues until they leave or get fired? What say you my friend?

    Curt,

Assistant coaches have year-to-year contracts, but head coaches have multi-year contracts all around D-IA. There are several reasons for this:

    1. Recruits would NOT commit to a school if they thought that the head coach might not be there when they were there. A coach with a 1-year contract would be recruiting a player that wouldn’t even join the school until his contract was over!

    2. Coaches need time to implement their systems and recruit players for their systems. That is why you hear coaches talking about a 3-year plan, since a system cannot be effective until it has players that fit the system and the team understands the system.

    3. Every other D-IA school gives a multi-year contract so the market *requires* every school to give a new coach a multi-year contract. The same thing happens in industry…you CANNOT compare coaches to regular employees, you have to compare coaches to people in leadership or key positions at companies. Those types of people *do* have multi-year contracts or significant buy-out clauses if they are fired early. I know executives in the wireless industry that were hired at the VP or higher level and fired a few months later…the “golden handshake” they received to leave the company is FAR more than Mack’s entire 5-year contract.

You also have weird contracts in industry that are given because that is what the market requires. For example, I had a contract once that would pay me a bonus of $200k or more if I just stayed with the company for 4 years. This is in addition to my regular salary, stock options, annual bonuses, and so on. If I quit I left that behind, but if they fired me (even if they had a cause to fire like incompetence or sexual harassment!) they had to immediately give me $200k. All “key” people were given similar contracts at the same time, and many of them immediately stopped working (wanting to be fired for incompetence) or did things on purpose that they *hoped* would get them fired. One guy had me convinced that he was dangerous and needed to be put into a mental institution. That made the company so crazy to work for that I quit and left the money and big salary behind.

  286. Garret July 1, 2010 7:40 am

Benson must be hoping that the MWC gets raided and he can snag a few of the MWC teams left behind. It was already reported over a month ago that he contacted SDSU and UNLV.

The flaw in that plan is that SDSU and UNLV have major budgetary problems and could be force to drop out of D-IA if they lose $3 million per year by going from the MWC to the WAC.

good to see so many guys training hard for this upcoming season.

Beau Yap weighs 250, per ST’ sports article. good read.

  289. Da Punchbowl Kid July 1, 2010 8:40 am

Yep, football’s in the air. Great article on Sopoaga too!

I’d still like yesterday’s question answered:
Are there more players than usual participating in summer drills?

  290. Slugger July 1, 2010 8:45 am

    Good morning!

Rain over Manoa this morning. Good thing they’re not out on the practice field running around. Beautiful to see though. Have a good day, Tsaiko-people!

  291. Curt July 1, 2010 9:22 am

thanks Garret. Interesting stuff regarding contracts.

  292. A-House July 1, 2010 9:51 am
