Interesting LA Times article on how did Boise State and Texas A&M built their programs.

“How did Boise State a program that didn’t join the FBS until 1996—transform from a little-known, six-win team from a state with no national media presence into an AP Top 5 contender? And how did Texas A&M, a team which hadn’t made a serious national title run since the early 1990s, manage to morph from a struggling team in the dwindling Big 12 to a challenger in the daunting SEC?
Well, as different as the Aggies and Broncos are, the factors that drove their unexpected appearances on the national radar are strikingly similar.
Hire the Right Head Coach
Kevin Sumlin: [At Texas A&M] we know that it’s as much about a player’s intangibles as it is what you can see from direct observation. We look for guys that are always at the ball, even when it’s not expected of them. When it comes to evaluating others, most leaders fail to realize that it takes absolutely no talent to give effort; effort is the great equalizer.
Create a Signature Win Opportunity
Think about it: The Broncos managed to pad their soft conference schedule (in the WAC and Mountain West) simply by adding a capstone game with a BCS opponent. If they won the game (like when they beat unranked Oregon State in 2006) and went undefeated, they could ascend to a BCS bowl game (they made it to the Fiesta Bowl in 2006).
It was genius.
Get Noticed
The media doesn’t show up to do a feature on your team when you hold opponents to under 10 points per game. No, you’re more likely to stir the pot when you rack up yards and score points.
Texas A&M and Boise State, on the other hand, both built momentum with a high-flying attack that was impossible to ignore.
Give the Ball to the Right Guy
Give the right player the ball at the right time. In other words, they played their cards in such a way that they got the most out of the hands they were dealt.
So, while it looks like a Heisman-worthy player is key to building a contender, you’ve got to first have a coach who can find the Heisman player on the roster.
How can the UH football program improve its football program by taking advantage of the above similarities?

Good article. I’ve been saying this for years. How did Boise st., a no name college ascend to the level they did in a short amount of time? Different people will different reasons…but the fact is ‘coaching’ is the number one reason…you either have a coach that knows his stuff or you got someone trying to retired on the job and cruises in neutral.

Case in point…. a few days ago the web site for uh athletics was “promoting” either volleyball or basketball .. n the writer of the article…at the end..(sponsors also will giving away coupons” or something like that at the game) wrote that… can he explain to me..why the name of the sponsors were not even mentioned…OMG… how idiotic is that…maybe his fingers got tired..to him sponsors are not worth a s..t huh i guess..He or she should be fired.. wonder what kind of a degree he/she hold.. can’t be in marketing..seems like they do not know the first thing about writing copy..Mr. Jay… go there n clean up that mess.. n hire sumone that knows what they are doing…Mr. Governor… GROW some TESTACLES.. n go UP there at UH n clean up that mess.. wonder if he plans to run for reelection ?

Chow did a number of these in his first year and they were all with Utah ties – what the heck is so good about a former Utah player?

Utah athletes represent a very small % of the team – heck, UH may have an equal number from the East Coast!

hiring laws may handcuff UH, but what is the mentality of the selection committee?

must hire a “high” profile coach for esteem knowing that he will leave in 4 or 5 years – because he is a damn good coach or because the entire staff got fired.

Hawaii has not reaped the benefits of a long time coach such as, dang, forgot his name, the one in the mid-60s to mid-70s

I would pay alot of money to hear at least one candidate for the DC job. For a D-1 team there are usually whispers of who could be hired. I look all over the place and can’t find a singke candidate. Can any of you guys guess any logical choices? I read the sportshawaii fblog but those dont really seem like logical candidates.

Congrats to Mr. Kobayashi…1st order of business.. get Mr. Yee back in fold…n have 2 good ears..to digest all info…. surely it will help… just saying…IMUA…

There was a Kobayashi family that was prominent many moons ago…that was very sports minded..
and great supports of pop warner football for the Kalani team.. they used to live across Aina Haina sum where or there abouts… same family ???

How about hiring Bob Wagner as defensive coordinator? He was pretty good at that position during his time at UH. I am pretty sure he’s available since he retired from Kamehameha Schools on the Big Island.

Chow needs to hire a DC with a winning tradition and maybe coached notable players. A DC with a suspect record isn’t going to get it done.

Chris Weisenhan is a really nice guy. But I wouldn’t pick him for DC. He doesn’t have any experience coaching on the defensive side if the ball. I would consider him only if none of the other 351 candidates have any experience coaching defense at the FBS or FCS level.

After all, he was the guy that “butchered” the O-line in 2012.

Football is played and won by players not coaches. Recruiting is more important that coaching, lots of coaches , few recruiters. Look what Jim Mora did at UCLA, everyone on staff recruited LA before and now after.

Let the Haters come out but UH had the winning formula when they hired JJ. For someone that’s accused of not recruiting, they was enough talent to win consistently and called with a BCS Bowl berth. He out UH on the map after being lost in the mix for many years. That’s why my door is always open for JJ to return. I have no problem he left when he did knowing who he had to work with. In addition, the UH President didn’t do squat to remove Herman when it was evident he was not qualified. He milked that gold medal to get this job.

Hope Jon can bring back Bert I to the fold. He resigned a couple of years ago if I remember correctly. Yes Ben Yee needs to be asked back but Chow is the one that needs to apologize and get Ben back.

I just hope that Chow doesn’t hire two unknown and inexperienced former GAs from Utah.

I believe a coach should get a full cycle plus 1 Recruiting and coaching will produce or not! I am 100% behind the current plan.

Deja vu all over again with Charlie Strong?

A source told WDRB that Strong notified Jurich of the Texas offer late Friday, but told Jurich he had made no final decision. He met with his coaching staff this morning and told coaches that he is still undecided. The entire staff was present at this morning’s meeting.

A source with knowledge of the negotiations told WDRB’s Rick Bozich that Strong is truly conflicted, and that it isn’t questions over assistant coach Clint Hurtt or money that are causing him any kind of problem.

“I really don’t think he knows,” the source said. “He’s trying to decide. I think he’ll talk to people he trusts, like Lou Holtz.”

Another source told WDRB’s Eric Crawford that Hurtt is a sticking point. Hurtt, who received an NCAA show-cause penalty for his role in recruiting violations at Miami, was given a provision to keep working at Louisville by the NCAA. Any other school that wants to employ him, however, would have to make a case for why it should be allowed to do so before the NCAA’s committee on infractions if it wishes to hire him.

No announcement was scheduled, and assistants left the U of L football complex this morning without speaking to media.
