352 and counting

As of this morning, there were 352  official applicants for the two vacant UH football coaching jobs.

About 40 were for the defensive coordinator’s job, with the remaining seeking the linebacker coach’s position.

It might be another two weeks, at least, before selects a replacement for defensive coordinator Thom Kaumeyer and linebacker coach Tony Tuioti. Both were notified their one-year contracts will be not be renewed after both deals expire in March. Both coaches remain on the payroll.

Blueprint for Building a Powerhouse College Football Program

Interesting LA Times article on how did Boise State and Texas A&M built their programs.

“How did Boise State a program that didn’t join the FBS until 1996—transform from a little-known, six-win team from a state with no national media presence into an AP Top 5 contender? And how did Texas A&M, a team which hadn’t made a serious national title run since the early 1990s, manage to morph from a struggling team in the dwindling Big 12 to a challenger in the daunting SEC?
Well, as different as the Aggies and Broncos are, the factors that drove their unexpected appearances on the national radar are strikingly similar.
    Hire the Right Head Coach
Kevin Sumlin: [At Texas A&M] we know that it’s as much about a player’s intangibles as it is what you can see from direct observation. We look for guys that are always at the ball, even when it’s not expected of them. When it comes to evaluating others, most leaders fail to realize that it takes absolutely no talent to give effort; effort is the great equalizer.
    Create a Signature Win Opportunity
Think about it: The Broncos managed to pad their soft conference schedule (in the WAC and Mountain West) simply by adding a capstone game with a BCS opponent. If they won the game (like when they beat unranked Oregon State in 2006) and went undefeated, they could ascend to a BCS bowl game (they made it to the Fiesta Bowl in 2006).
    It was genius.
    Get Noticed
The media doesn’t show up to do a feature on your team when you hold opponents to under 10 points per game. No, you’re more likely to stir the pot when you rack up yards and score points.
Texas A&M and Boise State, on the other hand, both built momentum with a high-flying attack that was impossible to ignore.
Give the Ball to the Right Guy
Give the right player the ball at the right time. In other words, they played their cards in such a way that they got the most out of the hands they were dealt.
So, while it looks like a Heisman-worthy player is key to building a contender, you’ve got to first have a coach who can find the Heisman player on the roster.
How can the UH football program improve its football program by taking advantage of the above similarities?

Wow never thought that there would be that many applicants for a job at UH. With so many applicants, hope that we find someone good.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    GO NUTS!!!

  6. jm2375 January 3, 2014 11:00 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Lots of people looking for jobs. Wonder how many are actually qualified.

    GO BOWS!

  7. al January 3, 2014 11:00 am

so does the dc get hired first so he can hire the lb coach?

    logical…however, this is uhm.

  8. al January 3, 2014 11:00 am

so, explain to me why an oc is not being advertised?

  9. al January 3, 2014 11:04 am

is it too late to pick up another mid-year transfer?

    perhaps a qb or mlb?

number of applicants don’t bother me – the selection committee bothers me!

  12. A-House January 3, 2014 11:07 am

    al:

your #8 – becuz one old assistant coach thinks he can still do it all using 70s and 80s plays
without the horses to get it done!

    UH needs new, young blood!!!

  13. al January 3, 2014 11:15 am

how much of an effort does the current staff make to prevent a player from seeking a release?
and more importantly do they take note to correct these issues?

  14. al January 3, 2014 11:19 am

the selection committee doesn’t bother since there is only one steersman of the ship. everyone else just rows the boat.

what bothers me is the process and how we may be the only state that handcuffs urgency.

  15. al January 3, 2014 11:22 am

12…i beg to differ. we probably and still continue to have too many young bloods on staff.

  16. SteveM January 3, 2014 11:33 am

    Good morning everyone!

Over 300 applicants for linebacker coach… is this typical?

  17. NorthShoreFan January 3, 2014 11:48 am

OC will be promoted from within….OC GA will need to be filled later…imho

  18. NorthShoreFan January 3, 2014 11:50 am

iirc….we have a…future “Chucky” on staff..so says the offensive guru

  19. NorthShoreFan January 3, 2014 11:51 am

given some late season offensive numbers…maybe?

  20. al January 3, 2014 12:02 pm

    16…quite typical indeed.

its like when Hawaiian airlines or UAL announces a cattle call for flight attendant vacancies. thousands show up to apply.

or when the naval shipyard announces vacancies for the apprenticeship program the ratio is one position = 300 applications.

  21. Steve P January 3, 2014 12:05 pm

Good article. I’ve been saying this for years. How did Boise st., a no name college ascend to the level they did in a short amount of time? Different people will different reasons…but the fact is ‘coaching’ is the number one reason…you either have a coach that knows his stuff or you got someone trying to retired on the job and cruises in neutral.

  22. bowwar January 3, 2014 12:27 pm

Yes, I think Boise or Utah State for that matter, should be looked at models that we should use if we want to build a program. Before we can do that though, we need to remove the impediments that hurt the program such as advertisement, concession and sale revenue which are deleted from the athletic department’s formula at NO ALOHA stadium…We definitely need to build our own stadium and get out from State politics.

  23. st. anthony trojan January 3, 2014 12:29 pm

    # 73 BOOLAKANAKA…. SURE WISH ME. JAY READS ur post… sumone should e mail it to him n all of the so called marketing staff there at uh athletics..

comes down to in simple math….

Tell me how you are going to fill the seats on my airline ?
Tell me how are you going to get bodies to fill my hotel room ?
Tell me how you will get bodies in my business ?
Tell me how you get bodies to use my product ?

IT is all about them…. the client and not UH ATHLETICS….

THE THINKING at UH now is…we are good for you.. come n kiss my fanny..
    n we will do nothing 4 you…

Case in point…. a few days ago the web site for uh athletics was “promoting” either volleyball or basketball .. n the writer of the article…at the end..(sponsors also will giving away coupons” or something like that at the game) wrote that… can he explain to me..why the name of the sponsors were not even mentioned…OMG… how idiotic is that…maybe his fingers got tired..to him sponsors are not worth a s..t huh i guess..He or she should be fired.. wonder what kind of a degree he/she hold.. can’t be in marketing..seems like they do not know the first thing about writing copy..Mr. Jay… go there n clean up that mess.. n hire sumone that knows what they are doing…Mr. Governor… GROW some TESTACLES.. n go UP there at UH n clean up that mess.. wonder if he plans to run for reelection ?

And one last note for Mr. Tsai.. woo woo.. more articles like this morning.. with the no key.. no entertainment etc.. thumbs up.. mucho likes that one…maybe by 2015…sumone will listen…Mr Yee… THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO…Mr. Boolakanaka.. hope you saved that post./ n e m,ail it to the marketing dept n Mr. Jay..they need to see it..IMUA

  25. A-House January 3, 2014 12:42 pm

    al:

#15 with you I agree – young blood was referring to OC and DC who have game experience and not the “grad assistants” being promoted to be an “assistant coach”

Chow did a number of these in his first year and they were all with Utah ties – what the heck is so good about a former Utah player?

Being a good player does not transmit into being a good coach!

  26. UH4eva January 3, 2014 12:44 pm

ST, why does your headline say 352 and counting. Has UH not counted all the applicants yet? The job postings were closed on Dec 27?

enough of this plantation, paternalistic ideal – let’s leave the 40s and 50s where they belong – a distant memory

for me, it is difficult to forgive or forget what the Big 5 did to immigrants and people of color when they controlled nearly everything in Hawaii – I still recall my first trip to Oahu in 1948 on a Hawaiian Air Lines DC 3 twin engine, aka “puff the magic dragon” in Viet Nam, where the stewardess refused to “service” the local people on board.

reason why 7 returning soldiers formed Central Pacific Bank in the mid-to-late 40s

it is more important, IMHO, to have good coaching in our case

Utah athletes represent a very small % of the team – heck, UH may have an equal number from the East Coast!

  38. gobows January 3, 2014 1:49 pm

    1 pc

that sounds like a good plan.

1st step, hire the right coach.

  39. A-House January 3, 2014 1:56 pm

    al:

hiring laws may handcuff UH, but what is the mentality of the selection committee?

must hire a “high” profile coach for esteem knowing that he will leave in 4 or 5 years – because he is a damn good coach or because the entire staff got fired.

Hawaii has not reaped the benefits of a long time coach such as, dang, forgot his name, the one in the mid-60s to mid-70s

  40. gobows January 3, 2014 1:59 pm

    25 ahouse

those former players are sort of brainwashed by the chow mystique. can’t blame them, they don’t know better. they’ll always be grateful for the opportunity, they don’t know that they were the only option.

gotta get rid of all these old coaches who refuse to hire someone they don’t know.

will this be chow’s last year or do we have to suffer through all 5 years?

  43. graham January 3, 2014 2:25 pm

I would pay alot of money to hear at least one candidate for the DC job. For a D-1 team there are usually whispers of who could be hired. I look all over the place and can’t find a singke candidate. Can any of you guys guess any logical choices? I read the sportshawaii fblog but those dont really seem like logical candidates.

  44. lowtone123 January 3, 2014 2:33 pm

Gary Dickman on The Sports Animals Show said that Chris Wisehan has indicated that he was interested in the DC job. I’m assuming he has applied.

  45. st. anthony trojan January 3, 2014 2:37 pm

Congrats to Mr. Kobayashi…1st order of business.. get Mr. Yee back in fold…n have 2 good ears..to digest all info…. surely it will help… just saying…IMUA…

There was a Kobayashi family that was prominent many moons ago…that was very sports minded..
and great supports of pop warner football for the Kalani team.. they used to live across Aina Haina sum where or there abouts… same family ???

  46. WarriorNY January 3, 2014 2:37 pm

How does one seriously sift through 352 applications for a coaching position?

ST, can you say without naming names if some of the applicants are “high profile or well-known names?

I hope you guys are enjoying the weather out there; 10 inches of snow and 14 degrees where I’m at!

  47. Creative721 January 3, 2014 2:52 pm

How about hiring Bob Wagner as defensive coordinator? He was pretty good at that position during his time at UH. I am pretty sure he’s available since he retired from Kamehameha Schools on the Big Island.

  48. Creative721 January 3, 2014 2:53 pm

Also, what’s the status on the Offensive Coordinator position? They aren’t hiring for that job or are they calling it something else?

  49. Inyoface January 3, 2014 3:19 pm

Chow needs to hire a DC with a winning tradition and maybe coached notable players. A DC with a suspect record isn’t going to get it done.

  50. kifi January 3, 2014 3:36 pm

    Imua! Forward, not backward.

  51. kifi January 3, 2014 3:41 pm

Chris Weisenhan is a really nice guy. But I wouldn’t pick him for DC. He doesn’t have any experience coaching on the defensive side if the ball. I would consider him only if none of the other 351 candidates have any experience coaching defense at the FBS or FCS level.

  52. kifi January 3, 2014 3:41 pm

    Of not if.

  53. ai-eee-soos January 3, 2014 4:05 pm

#51. – I would not consider him at all for DC.

After all, he was the guy that “butchered” the O-line in 2012.

    imo.

  54. ai-eee-soos January 3, 2014 4:06 pm

add to # 53. don’t why the HC kept him.

  55. Slugger January 3, 2014 4:10 pm

    Hiyah, Tsaikos!

Mahalo to d1shima for reminding me about FB season. What a game last night.

Good luck in finding the right coaches, UH. Hoping for the best, better than all the rest.

  56. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2014 4:37 pm

Remember when Texas was a better job than UCLA or Baylor?

  57. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2014 4:40 pm

    No. 352:
True. I don’t think all the applications have been counted.

  58. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2014 4:44 pm

Wiesehan is not a candidate for DC.

  59. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2014 4:45 pm

    There are some interesting candidates.

  60. st. anthony trojan January 3, 2014 5:06 pm

Mr. Tsai… do you know if Mr. Noga applied ??

  61. Last Call January 3, 2014 5:13 pm

  62. ai-eee-soos January 3, 2014 5:19 pm

    … GOOD NEWS …

    #58. Stephen Tsai:
    January 3rd, 2014 at 4:44 pm

Wiesehan is not a candidate for DC.

  63. gobows January 3, 2014 5:29 pm

    51 & 53

rb’s had multiple blocking personal fouls and the prize gem doesn’t hold the ball correctly.

    so who’s the coach?

  64. Jellybean January 3, 2014 5:33 pm

Stephen Tsai, wait you’re telling me that they didn’t count all the applications yet? WTF are they doing over there? Application closed on the 27th of Dec!!!

  65. Dennis Halloran January 3, 2014 6:07 pm

Football is played and won by players not coaches. Recruiting is more important that coaching, lots of coaches , few recruiters. Look what Jim Mora did at UCLA, everyone on staff recruited LA before and now after.

  66. Warrior Dave January 3, 2014 6:37 pm

Let the Haters come out but UH had the winning formula when they hired JJ. For someone that’s accused of not recruiting, they was enough talent to win consistently and called with a BCS Bowl berth. He out UH on the map after being lost in the mix for many years. That’s why my door is always open for JJ to return. I have no problem he left when he did knowing who he had to work with. In addition, the UH President didn’t do squat to remove Herman when it was evident he was not qualified. He milked that gold medal to get this job.

  67. bowwar January 3, 2014 6:39 pm

Jon Kobayashi is from the Kobayashi, Sugita, Goda law firm…I believe his father, Bert, has always been a “player” behind the scenes with UH sports. Yes, I do hope he tries to bring back Mr. Yee’s involvement…

  68. Warrior Dave January 3, 2014 6:47 pm

Hope Jon can bring back Bert I to the fold. He resigned a couple of years ago if I remember correctly. Yes Ben Yee needs to be asked back but Chow is the one that needs to apologize and get Ben back.

  69. gobows January 3, 2014 6:50 pm

    65 dh

coaches put players in position to win games. coaches teach players technique, schemes, discipline, etc. coaching matters big time. recruiting is part of a coaches duty in college sports.

look what norm chow did at UH.

  70. Old School Dave January 3, 2014 6:54 pm

I just hope that Chow doesn’t hire two unknown and inexperienced former GAs from Utah.

  71. NorthShoreFan January 3, 2014 7:43 pm

    great ball game going on

  72. Dennis Halloran January 3, 2014 7:47 pm

I believe a coach should get a full cycle plus 1 Recruiting and coaching will produce or not! I am 100% behind the current plan.

  73. nana January 3, 2014 8:10 pm

Go Rainbow Warriors, get the right coaches to teach our boys to play smart football. Jordan Wynn will be a 23 year old OC. I hope we get an experienced DC.

  74. NorthShoreFan January 3, 2014 8:13 pm

Fotu tu- tu tu tu tu

  75. boolakanaka January 3, 2014 8:32 pm

45 and 47–I do believe this is Bert’s boy–which is old school power structure at works. While it speaks that his has an old time money rolodex, and inside track to the Punahou power connections, not a lot, at least nothing that jumps out at you, that of his prior experience speaks volumes to doing succesfull development/underwriting work at a university. That said, I wish him the best, and will support his vision for UH athletics.

As for Wags, the adage, been there done that, capsulizes Wags posture on any potential coaching positions. He is not a coaching junkie, and from what I know, is satisfied with his current life.

  76. st. anthony trojan January 3, 2014 9:07 pm

Thanks warrior dave n boolakanmaka.. if he is the son of bert.. aka should be in great hands…he he when they bleed ..no green blood.. just tan footballs.. Mr. Bert was was a GREAT backer and supporter of kalani pop warner…uku pila years ago…. when my son was playing for the kona hawaiians…is how we met… was n is always thankful n grateful for his hospitality then…IMUA

  77. el burro sabio January 3, 2014 9:11 pm

Is anyone of the opinion that Powell and Rauscher are not good coaches? If so, then the concern about hiring a coach with only GA experience is valid.

BTW, Rauscher did have a year at Dixie in addition to being a GA at UCLA (NOT at Utah).

  78. HiFlyer January 3, 2014 9:22 pm

Nice come back for the BasketBows

  79. cocobean January 3, 2014 10:09 pm

exciting game. need more fans to come out and support the team. bj should go all out to promote this team. proper marketing of the revenue generating fall sports could make up some of the football revenue short fall.

this team has the talent to bring out the numbers of the AC/Alika years if promoted properly.

  80. st. anthony trojan January 3, 2014 10:23 pm

ha ha.. coco bean…you are joking.. there is no promotion that works there….
cuz no one knows “diddly” about that…but with the proper promo.. the sheriff should be filled for every game….porom word at UHAD..is a “me” word.. never done with the fan in mind..sumone
should ask them…what have they done for the fans lately ?? DUD… are we supposed ton don sumthing for the fans…thought..they were supposed 2 just come in droves n buy ticket..so we can keep our jobs ??? but ur right.. seems like a very exciting group of students therev that Mr. gib has put together…

  81. NorthShoreFan January 3, 2014 10:30 pm

I hope the program will not be held to impossible goals. They are still developing and not all the pieces are there yet. Some still need to develop. One thing for sure, we’ll be seeing some really exciting games this year.

  82. PaulCrewe January 4, 2014 7:35 am

Deja vu all over again with Charlie Strong?

A source told WDRB that Strong notified Jurich of the Texas offer late Friday, but told Jurich he had made no final decision. He met with his coaching staff this morning and told coaches that he is still undecided. The entire staff was present at this morning’s meeting.

A source with knowledge of the negotiations told WDRB’s Rick Bozich that Strong is truly conflicted, and that it isn’t questions over assistant coach Clint Hurtt or money that are causing him any kind of problem.

“I really don’t think he knows,” the source said. “He’s trying to decide. I think he’ll talk to people he trusts, like Lou Holtz.”

Another source told WDRB’s Eric Crawford that Hurtt is a sticking point. Hurtt, who received an NCAA show-cause penalty for his role in recruiting violations at Miami, was given a provision to keep working at Louisville by the NCAA. Any other school that wants to employ him, however, would have to make a case for why it should be allowed to do so before the NCAA’s committee on infractions if it wishes to hire him.

No announcement was scheduled, and assistants left the U of L football complex this morning without speaking to media.

  85. Shoko January 4, 2014 8:01 am

I think the holdup on Strong’s decision to accept the Texas position may be contract details.

  86. Shoko January 4, 2014 8:23 am

Just wondering whether the new DC position will be a two-year contract in order to attract better candidates considering the instability of Chow’s tenure.
