Now that wasn't awkward …

We had a meeting today to discuss our high school reunion.
It was at 7:30 a.m.
As  Stretch, SJmacro and Myki know, I have a hard time making football practice at that time. (My son had to serve detention Wednesday because we had four tardies in a row.)
But I made it.
And I saw the gang.  As I approached, I could see through the window they were greeting each other with hugs.
It’s been a while, and I wasn’t sure what our leader looked like. But I went up to the group and said, “Hey, everybody. Long time no see.” Then I started hugging people.
One person said to me: “Uh, who are you?”
Me: “Stephen … Stephen Tsai. Roosevelt ’78. Rough Riders forever. This is the reunion meeting, right?”
The guy: “Uh, no. It’s not.”
I guess I need to read my e-mails.

* * *

OK, we’re giving away two more tickets, this time to Monday’s late game. These are just general admission seats. Anyway, everyone who posts through 5 p.m. today is automatically entered in the drawing. Winning name will be announced this evening.

* * *

The UH coaches have completed their evaluations of every top prospect in the state. Expect most of the recruiting to be finished in a couple of weeks. (A spot or two will be saved.)

* * *

Things are heating up in the negotiations between UH and SMU. They’re looking at a game on Sept. 25, 2010. UH has some flexibility. A school from a BCS conference is interested in playing UH that year or in the near future.

* * *

After watching the Scout Bowl, I think Dustin Blount’s future might be as a running back. He’s extremely quick, and very difficult for a defender to find. He draws comparisons to Oregon State running back Jaquizz Rodgers.

* * *

According to a UH official, there have been a rash of burglaries in the athletic department facilities. About six iPods have been stolen from student-athletes.

Looking forward to seeing Blount next year. I hope he plays rb so that Pilares can focus at sb. Having another playmaker on the field will open up the offense even more.

    Go Warriors!

  4. Garret November 15, 2008 6:57 am

I was wondering about Blount at RB after hearing about how well he did in the Scout Bowl. Blount as a quick RB and Heun as a power RB means that the recruiting needs at RB aren’t as big as might have been thought.

  5. Garret November 15, 2008 6:58 am

The coaches are doing such an excellent job of recruiting. Saving a spot or two for players that might be available at the end is a good thing.

It is horrible that people are stealing iPods from the Warriors!

Good Saturday morning ST. Did you check the Police blotter? The Tsaiko’s were out in full force with the twins leading the way!

In breaking news, Curveball’s been presented with our youngest blogger to date. A-joe has blessed him with a blog handle already. Pending affirmation from the proud parents, he just may grow up to wear the name *Slider* with pride!

Mmmmm. Bacon, eggs and hot rice for breakfast. Yum! Maybe some waffles with a side of Vienna sausages for dinner.

Hey, have to plan ahead — for food.

  13. Stephen Tsai November 15, 2008 7:25 am

Not to give away any secrets, but there will be some surprises heading UH’s way, if what our people tell us is true.

    This boy is a warrior — http://www.komonews.com/news/34498624.html

  19. Bulla November 15, 2008 7:57 am

    Good morning Tsaikos,

once an for all, it’s all i am going to say about last night…

Congratulations to Punahou, they beat St Louis straight up. They were the better team last night, and they made the plays they needed to. Good luck in your quest for the state championship.

One irritating tidbit though, if every time a player makes a big play and turns to the crowd and waves his hands to encourage more cheering, would that be considered tacky? It looked like a WWF match the way ‘some’ athletes kept trying to ‘play’ to the crowd…..I expected better from such highly acclaimed players….

    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS (X2)

  20. wafan November 15, 2008 8:03 am

    Mr. Tsai, you tease.

  21. Stretch November 15, 2008 8:22 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Last night’s bball game was not a good start to the season. It appeared that the team is not able to execute the offense effectively. We’ll see how long it takes them to get the offense clicking since almost everyone in the lineup is new to the program.

See everyone later, time for me to get a refresher on how to handle Hazardous Waste. What an exciting Saturday I have ahead of me!!

  22. addahknowjoe November 15, 2008 8:23 am

    ST-

Cough it up, my friend. Tell us these secrets you harbor that seek to bear fruit amongst the fertile lands of Manoa?

No hold back. You are amongst family and friends. Think of it as merely revealing to us, “possibilities.” Not actual facts that it’ll happen. If the surprises never bear fruit, then that’s all they were- possibilities.

    No harm done.

  23. addahknowjoe November 15, 2008 8:28 am

    Stretch-

Now… since when did you need a refresher course on drinking? Who in the world puts on such a class? And, on a Saturday morning no doubt.

I gots to acquire me some Hazardous Waste Handlin’ Skillz.

  24. whitey November 15, 2008 8:33 am

Good morning Tsaikos. Good bb game last night. even tho they lost, i like the way they play, speed and hustle. they have got to work on their ball handling and 3 pt shots. they will do good this year and will probably finish above expectations.

duffer, good rock. no wind, cool, and no excuses.

  25. letsgowarriors November 15, 2008 8:53 am

so what, are the coaches going to finally offer roby toma???

and please dont compare blount to jacquizz rodgers. just bc they are the same height, u gotta be kidding me. there is no way blount is even close to having the strength rodgers has. but the RB switch might work, ive seen postings by al mentioning that blount needs to work on his hands. we have to get blount the ball bc he is a playmaker, so if hes having a hard time catching it, i guess RB would be a better option.

  26. Stephen Tsai November 15, 2008 9:03 am

Blount had problems with his pass-catching early in the season. He still was learning the routes. But he is pretty quick.
They also used Ryan Henry as a running back, but he’s better suited for the slot.
Jake Ingram and Tyson Kafentzis keep telling me that Matt Kiel is going to be very good. He’s fast, and he’s got good hands.

  27. Stretch November 15, 2008 9:05 am

ajoe – hazardous materials can be considered the waste that is produced the next morning after a night of drinking.

  28. letsgowarriors November 15, 2008 9:08 am

good to hear. isnt kiel like 6’2″, and we snagged him as a walkon.

so are these surprises heading our way a good thing?

  29. madeinhawaii November 15, 2008 9:14 am

    Morning all.

Basketball is back! Not bad for a team that has played a game together for the first time. No assists by Nitoto. Not good. Given time, this team has the potential to do well, they just need to start playing as a team and believe in each other.

  30. Stretch November 15, 2008 9:14 am

ST – I’ll let Wena know that you had a secret rendevous so you could give out some hugs

  31. Stephen Tsai November 15, 2008 9:17 am

yes Wafan, there is our leader working his magic again!!!

BTW, if Washington St moves the game to Seattle, where will it be held? Trying to plan for trip which may include this one and then on to Vegas.

i’m still enthusiastic after watching last night’s game. there’s a glimpse of what we could be. when flemings and adams really get into the groove, it’ll be nice to see.
wow, its snowing at the michigan vs northwestern game.

IIRC the talk was for the game to be played at Qwest Field

  47. d1島 November 15, 2008 9:45 am

I hope my posts show up before 5:00!

  48. Stephen Tsai November 15, 2008 9:46 am

The Washington State game would be played in the Seahawks’ stadium.
Anyway, as i understand it, the team would stay in Vegas between road games.
Could be dangersous … for the casinos. I’m confident Rich2176 is going to hit it big.

As for the delay, that’s a leftover from yesterday. I guess every time there’s a contest, the blog crashes. So they put us on something like a 20-second delay. I’ll talk to a tech.
From now on, we’ll go with drawings for prizes instead of the first to reach a specific number.
Then I won’t get scolded so much by the editors.

  49. d1島 November 15, 2008 9:47 am

Did anyone else see the two “I’s” high in the EZ at Illinois’ stadium? 😎

Although, as I understand it, it’s weighted toward those who bring apple martinis to my doorstep.

Dustin Blount at running back? Sounds intriguing; it’s amazing how many versatile athletes UH posseses even though detractors constantly down-play the talent level. This next recruiting class is teeming with athleticism, character, versatility & best of all…enthusiasm about becoming Warriors. It don’t get much better than this!!! All the naysayers will be eating crow next year when the Offense starts rolling again.

  102. Stretch November 15, 2008 11:29 am

the one thing that I noticed about OSU’s Rodgers is that right when he is about to get hit, he would dip down to get lower than the tackler and get a few extra yards. it’s all about leverage and if you can get lower than the other guy, you can drive him back. I liked the way he ran

  103. madeinhawaii November 15, 2008 11:44 am

Wow.. just got through reading yesterday’s blog and saw Ralph’s comment about teen suicides in Hawaii … it was a rude awakening so I had to read the article.

    • 12 percent of public high school students in Hawai’i attempted suicide last year, compared with 6.9 percent of high school students nationwide.

    • 75 percent of those who attempted suicide have mental problems.

That means that at least 9% of our kids have mental problems?? I mean, some don’t contemplate or try to kill themselves, right?

    Why all the angst?

  104. chawan_cut November 15, 2008 11:46 am

    d1,
what i meant was, notre dame has fallen on such hard times that previously they were so “good” that they were always the favorites and didn’t have to worry about any team.

    Aloha kakahiaka!

    Happy birthday Jason’s mom!

The game last night wasn’t too bad. They held the scoring pretty close. I’m happy since my alma mater won. Both teams are pretty young. Hope they do better on Sunday.

Spoke to Mrs. MACK before the game last night. High praise for the Tsaikos since we are supportive of the team no matter what. We no talk stink about the players & coaches. That is what I liked about this blog when I was living on the mainland. Instant ‘ohana, caring people.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Interesting how President elect, Obama is using the utube to rally support for his appeal to congress to pass an initial financial package ASAP to help kick start this economy.

  110. expat November 15, 2008 12:16 pm

    Bulla

That is disappointing that some players weren’t as respectful as they should have been. It is fine to get amped up but you have to act like you have been there before. Even if you haven’t.

I was wondering something. In one of the articles about Te’o it sounded like he played JV at Kahuku as a frosh but was pulled up to varsity for the playoffs. That would have been in 2005 — so did Manti play against Punahou in the State championship game that year?

  111. brew808 November 15, 2008 12:17 pm

Okay – not wanting to upset Mei Ling and the rest of the Kool-aid drinking Tsaikos – I’ll behave and withhold my comments about last night’s UH B-ball game(s). I’ll just ask – “When does V-ball and Baseball season start?” 🙄

In the second half, the cameras often panned the crowd, and there were lots of “ol-time” fans sitting with arms crossed and serious frowns on their faces. The Rainbow Dancers and band performed well. 😀 😯 😆

  112. brew808 November 15, 2008 12:23 pm

They just showed the parking lot at Reser (OSU) Stadium. There were lots of fans there – just like back in September. I suppose they’re having “waste(d)” disposal training, just like Stretch! I still can’t get over that so-called “no-alcohol” policy in the stadium, but free-flowing tailgates with unlimited reentry into the stadium… 😀 😯 😆

  113. brew808 November 15, 2008 12:30 pm

It was a throw short, and kinda run long…the guy rolls off the BS-You defender’s back and runs about 60 yds for the TD 🙄

    Afternoon gangees!

Navy put up a good fight. Only saw a few minutes. Was Kaipo-Noa injured?

Took kid and friend to Rai Rai Ramen in Kailua. Had their miso soup for the first time. Biggest bowl of miso soup I’ve ever had. Was in a small ramen bowl. Slightly spicy with sesame seeds, lots of tofu, onions and wakame. Ono. I think it was $2.50.

Ok gotta go do some yard work and then take kids to movie, etc. bbl.

  124. koakane™ November 15, 2008 1:30 pm

good morn eh afternoon tsaiko kanes and wahines

bball game last night was so so. obvious problems with offense as stated by many. no movement, big guy needs to establish his bulk in the paint, passing needs to improve and players gotta start playing together.

congrats to buff and blue on winning the ILH. hope this team shows up in the states playoff.

over and out got to do errands whooooosh esmeeeeeeee

    Kazz,

Not one to personally imbibe (Hmmm…I can buy one six-pack for that much!) while in the stadium but I’d really like to see something done to curb unruly behavior resulting from over indulging.

  130. Kazz November 15, 2008 2:21 pm

    D1,

I think cutting off beer sales before the start of the 3rd and maintaining the no double fisting policy (i.e. only one beer per purchase) should be able to somewhat curb drunken behavior while trying to compromise with those that can drink and handle themselves.

  131. Kazz November 15, 2008 2:22 pm

Eh…. BSU is gonna pull away from Utah State in the second half.

  132. RainboWarrior November 15, 2008 2:26 pm

Our recruiting has been very exciting this year. I just hope that all the verbal commitments sign on the line and that we can sneak in some Colt Brennan or Pisa Tinoisamoa prospects at the end.

Feel free to pull my name for the tickets, that would be great. Mahalo

My son was forced to be in the school choir.
They had a performance today. Of course, he stood there, and did not sing. He did not even pretend to do an Ashlee Simpson.
And, so, I give him grief. And he says: What? When was the last time YOU ever sang in public?
To which, I said: “In the jungle, the mighty jungle …”

  136. Stephen Tsai November 15, 2008 2:41 pm

    I can’t believe I ordered this Boise-Idaho game.
I mean, was it shot on MyTV?

  137. Stephen Tsai November 15, 2008 2:47 pm

    That shouldn’t be a fumble.
The QB should have been called for a sack. His progress was stopped. You can’t stand up a QB and then start beating on him.
    Benson State U.

  138. Jason November 15, 2008 2:49 pm

    I ate too much. 😀

Speaking of the school choir, my oldest niece asked me what elective I took in the 7th grade. I said I took the least of the four evils: chorus, band, orchestra, and art. I didn’t want to play an instrument, and I never did like art. Then my sister said, “You were in chorus?” I forgot, she was in California at the time. 😀

  139. d1島 November 15, 2008 2:50 pm

So is anyone in the Kibbie Dome voicing their displeasure?

Is there anyone in the Kibbie Dome?

  140. d1島 November 15, 2008 2:53 pm

    Wildcats win, 45-0.

    They finish the season 6-3.

  141. Jason November 15, 2008 3:01 pm

I would love to visit the Kibbie Dome once, just so I could get a good laugh out of it. Then again, it’s cheaper to see it on TV, and you get the same laugh. 😛

  142. Ronnie November 15, 2008 3:03 pm

    Aloha Tsaiko Family!

We are under voluntary evacuation from the Yorba Linda Fire (now called the Freeway Complex Fire). We went to a friend’s house in Orange. One of the evacuation centers is my son’s high school. Yikes!

  143. Ronnie November 15, 2008 3:06 pm

The nearest fire is about 2 miles from our complex.

  144. HiFlyer November 15, 2008 3:08 pm

Ronnie – hope everything works out and they can control the fire before it gets near your house.

Another reason to move back to Hawaii.

  145. chawan_cut November 15, 2008 3:09 pm

jason, if you go on the 2 game road trip with stretch next year to Wazzu and UNLV, you could maybe take a side trip to Moscow.
although if ST is right, the game will be in Seattle and not Pullman. Moscow is really close to Pullman.

  146. Kekoa November 15, 2008 3:10 pm

All the more reason for the D-1 Ohana to have a fine family Thansgiving Dinner together. Big Bird will not be pleased as many of his cousins will be consumed by the Tsaiko Nation with nary a second thought of offering reprieve.

The nearest fire is about 2 miles from our complex.

When I was in high school there was a massive brushfire that originated in the Mililani/Wapio area that eventually found it’s way to one of the uninhabited ridges next to where I live in Pacific Palisades. We could see the fires just a short “leap” away. Thankfully HFD took care of it.

Ronnie, stay safe, but I’m sure all will be well.

Okay back from moving a ton of canned food for Brenden Wish. It is amazing how many people are starting to realize how lucky they are even in these tough economic times.

As usual, the one’s who probably least afford to do so were exceedingly generous. A few families brought in their donations then stayed to help because we were short-handed.

You know those Matson containers? Filled 1.5 of them today.

I sure hope Brenden understands how much good he is doing in his last days.

  155. wafan November 15, 2008 3:35 pm

Maybe I missed a post upstream, but is it confirmed that next year’s UH-Wazzu matchup is gonna be held in Seattle instead of Pullman?

This might just sway my mind in deciding to go to this one…..not that I have a problem with Pullman, it’s just that Seattle is easier to get to.

    Watching the ‘Zags bb game.

Dang. They have a guy, Foster, 7’5″ tall. That is correct — seven feet five inches.

He can dunk without jumping. Looks very awkward but gets the rebounds!

Oh my. When he dribbles it takes forever. Amazing

  161. wafan November 15, 2008 3:46 pm

The UH/WSU game is not confirmed for Qwest Field — yet. It will probably be there since Wazzu plays one of their “home” games in Seattle each year. It helps when the owner of Qwest Field and the Seahawks is a Wazzu alum.

Hopefully, the announcement will be made soon.

My curious mind craves more UH football recruiting information….

How many more local prospects is UH still actively recruiting? Any hints on which player position(s) and/or school(s)?

How many more uncommitted scholarship offers UH left with?

Any hints at which prospects (mainland or local) might be taking their official recruiting visit to Hawaii for the Idaho game?

    Mahalo!!!

    It’s a bye-week so what the heck…

I think if Greg Alexander, Kealoha Pilares, and David Veikune got a free-style rap session together I think this is what it would sound like. (With some help from the Beastie Boys of course)

Now my name is G.A. I’ve got a story to tell
When I rock the crowd the crowd they all yell
And when I get the feeling I feel the feel swell
And when I start to throw well I throw the ball well

Oh you didn’t know I got the flow
I could swim, run, juke in just one show
With the 1st down stuffin’ with the 2pt conversion
Mother f**kers’ you’ll see we’re Hawaii Bowl playin’
Hey could you please pass me the peas
And let me get a tissue if you think you’re gonna sneeze
I’m the player not a coach and I’m no roach
I bought Rolo a brand new broach!!!

Well I’m Pi-la-res with a story to tell
When I rock the crowd I rock the crowd well
And when I get the feeling I feel the feel swell
‘Cause when I start to run well I run the draw well

‘Cause I’m a craftsman, more than fastin’
I’ll take you to task everyone of ya’ll linemen
    I’m rehearsin’ and ain’t maskin’
Bringin’ the run back and keepin’ it lastin’
Keepin’ it top notch, beyond passing
Simmer in the pan ’cause, I ain’t flashin’
I’m party crashin’ so you better batten
    Down those hatches stop procrastin’

Well I’m Vei-kune with a story to tell
And when I rock the crowd the crowd they all yell
And when I get the feeling I feel the feel swell
‘Cause when I start to rush well I rush the pocket well

Went to the top and never went pop and
Came back down but still not stopping
I’m not even asking, “Yo what’s cracking?”
Serving QB’s on a platter like baked Alaskan
So start packing because I’m back in
The game of football representing the Hawaiians
Now push the pause button then start ducking

Shhhhh you heard me like I’m H.F. Herman,
Herman shhhhhhhh, Herman shhh, Herman shhhhhhh,
    Herman SHHHHHHHHH!!!!

  168. chawan_cut November 15, 2008 4:17 pm

    cool. QWest field.
hopefully i’ll get more than a $70 standing room only spot like I did at the junk seahawks vs packers game the other month.
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/mWgd2h9jpJBMTiddML8bEw

if Wazzu is this junk this year, i don’t know why they’re moving it to QWest. we’ll probably have a good hawaii showing but not enough to fill that stadium. can’t imagine that may cougar fans going to support their new coach and team.

USC and Stanford tied at 17 early in the 3rd.
Miss. St. ahead of Alabama 7-5 in the 2nd. Surely this one will change.
LSU trailing Troy 14-3 early in the 2nd.
Utah rolling against SDSU 21-0 early in the 2nd.
Tulsa behind Houston 14-3 in the 2nd.

  172. Stephen Tsai November 15, 2008 4:20 pm

I think they’re allowed one game in Seattle each year. It’s for their Seattle alum.

  173. kapakahi November 15, 2008 4:22 pm

    ST…

I’m hoping that Coach Mack was able to convince Long Beach Poly head coach Raul Lara (during his campus visit earlier this week) to allow Tepa, Daily-Lyles & McKay to take their official recruiting visit to Hawaii for Saturday’s Idaho game….to give Warriors the best opportunity to land these players.

The main logistical hurdle is that Long Beach Poly plays a CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Southern Section Pac-5 opening (quarterfinal) play-off game next Friday (Nov. 20) night. If Long Beach Poly keeps winning, they could be playing every weekend through Dec. 19 -20 for the CIF D1 California State championship….which would make it more difficult for the Long Beach Poly players to take their official recruiting trip to Hawaii this year.

  174. Committed Road Warrior November 15, 2008 4:24 pm

Today’s wins by Fresno, Nevada, and Louisiana Tech have earned each of them bowl eligibility status. If you include Boise and San Jose, we are talking 5 WAC teams who are eligible. Can UH make it #6?

I wonder if the bowl scenarios work out at the end so that all of the bowl-eligible WAC teams can get into a game. We’ll see.

  175. Mei Ling November 15, 2008 4:28 pm

Why is no one making a big deal out Boise’s horribly weak schedule this year????
Its almost worse than ours last year.
Its giving them a false sense of them actually being good. They only beat Oregon before the Ducks figured out who they were.
I say Nevada will upset them next week.

    LizK . . .

re: your son’s like of the Twilight series. I believe the story is set in Forks, WA. You might want to visit Forks. Beautiful little town out on the Western coast of the Washington peninsula.

re: Cabela’s. We have, I think, the 2nd or 3rd largest store in the US. It is very interesting to visit that store: live trout, stuffed and mounted animals, everything you can imagine for the outdoors, buffalo burgers, and I do not know what else.

The last time I was there three policemen were looking at the flashlights. Each of them were smacking the palms of their hands with the various flashlights. I overheard one say, “Hey, this one feels solid, has a powerful beam, and should stop just about anybody cold.” I look over and it is our Resource Officer for the high school. He is a retired sniper for the USMC.

So far so good. The fire is above our complex. The good news is that a lot of the brush on the hillside was cleared away to build new homes and the new high school.

Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts. We really appreciate them.

I think it is very interesting that when we evacuated, but I thought we would be able to come back tonight, I didn’t really think about things I couldn’t take. Now that I may not have a house to come home to, there are so many other things I wish I could have taken…. But my boys are with me and we are staying with friends (and not in a hotel) so I know God is watching over us.

  190. Jason November 15, 2008 6:26 pm

Whoa, I must really be getting old — finished my Bible study, then took a nap that was almost three hours. I never take naps, only when I have a cold. Oh wait, I do have a cold. But not a bad one. Unless it’s a delayed kanak attack. Anwways …

Stay safe, Ronnie! Keep in touch with Rob25 or someone, so we know you’re okay.

  191. brew808 November 15, 2008 6:31 pm

Ronnie – Seems like you have your computer. Did the boys take their books and homework? We’re all praying for you and hope your home is safe and the only outcome is an interesting tale for you and your family. 😕 🙂 😯

    Ronnie Girl-
Our prayers are with you folks today. Saw the reports about the fire on the national news and it looks like a bad one. Glad to read that you folks are safe. Take care!

Troy had a 28 point lead against LSU and just squandered it all. They’re now trailing by 2 with four minutes left in the game. 33-31 LSU.

  199. brew808 November 15, 2008 6:51 pm

Stanford Trees would have to beat the Bears in Berkeley next Saturday to go 6-6. UC already whacked their own hundred year old oak trees in Berkeley (for their new athletic complex). They will likely whack the visiting trees from Palo Alto too. IMHO – 😯 😀 😆

cheerleaders are typically short and athletic. oh and on the light side yah. usc has a cheerleader who must be at least 6′2″, yah, it is a she who is pretty and all but she sticks out like a sore tall thumb.

The boys, however, left their school books at home… It’s a good thing they can get duplicates.

    Ronnie,

So sorry to hear that you were evacuated! Please let me know if you need a place to stay–we have 2 empty bedrooms that you and your boys can use anytime. I hope that you can get back to your home soon…I know how it feels to evacuate since I had to do it for last year’s fires.

  216. mike November 15, 2008 8:38 pm

Sheesh, and my brother isn’t even a huggy guy. Rules 1 and 2 in the Tsai Family Charter are “Don’t touch me.” My copy, at least.

Those iPod thefts are pretty low, but it’s happening everywhere on and around campus. Several of my students have had bags, laptops, iPods etc stolen this semester.

  217. Garret November 15, 2008 8:39 pm

Both BSU and Idaho are recruiting much less in Idaho and instead getting their players from states like California and Washington.

According to preseason rosters since 1995, the number of Idaho players in the rivalry is dwindling. In 1999, 48 players from the state dotted the rosters. This year, just 24 players are from the state. Population numbers and pressure to compete in the WAC means the schools are expanding their recruiting bases.

It is a numbers game, one the players understand even if they feel that some of Idaho’s high school players are overlooked in the equation.

“In a state like California, you can go on a recruiting trip and watch 15 guys. You come to Idaho to watch one guy,” said Boise State senior linebacker Tim Brady, a walk-on from Bishop Kelly High. “It’s kind of tough and it’s hard for coaches to rationalize coming here to watch one guy when they can go watch a bunch.”

By comparison, Boise State has 42 players from California. Idaho has31 from the Golden State and 27 from Washington, which has many schools closer to Moscow than the Treasure Valley. The reality is that coaches – who must win to keep their jobs – have to go where the talent is. And Idaho, at least right now, doesn’t have enough players.

  218. Garret November 15, 2008 8:40 pm

    mike,

I’m sorry to hear that there are so many iPod and other things stolen this year!

  219. curveball November 15, 2008 8:46 pm

    Garret:
This is one of the reasons Sac State is so weak..The good talent wants to go out of town..they do not agressivly recruit and they pretty much just get the left overs..plus academics are not the greatest..Davis recruits better than Sac State..no way to the WAC

  220. NYUH November 15, 2008 8:46 pm

I hate bye weeks. Does UH get the Hawaii Bowl automatically if they become eligible? Lots of WAC teams are eligible although the standings are tight

My final projections for the year. Hoping I’m wrong with a few.

    Boise State #7 8-0 12-0
    Louisiana Tech 5-3 7-5
    Nevada 5-3 7-5
    Hawaii 5-3 7-6
    Fresno State 4-4 7-5
    San Jose State 4-4 6-6
    Utah State 3-5 3-9
    New Mexico State 1-5 3-9
    Idaho 1-5 2-10

  221. Garret November 15, 2008 8:52 pm

    NYUH,

Yes, UH gets the Hawaii Bowl if they are eligible no matter if other WAC teams have better records and are left out of bowls.

About $8 billion of the $97 billion in gift cards that were purchased in 2007 have gone unused! Some states claim that money, other states let the stores keep the money, and some split the money with retailers.

Does anybody know what it would cost to replace the iPods?

How are they being stolen and where? In the locker rooms?

You guys are right though, thievery is getting out of hand. It truly is sad that these athletes are being victimized too.

  232. Garret November 15, 2008 10:01 pm

    DPK,

Sadly, having fans replace the stolen iPods would probably be considered an NCAA violation. In fact, if UH gave them replacement iPods that would also be an NCAA violation.

  233. Jason November 15, 2008 10:02 pm

This is why I never take naps — I always get a headache later on, or my head starts feeling very fuzzy.

And … now I forgot what I was going to say.

Oh wait, no, I remember now. Um, it’s evening. Who won the contest? (Not that I need tickets. BTW, students, let’s go to the game. C’mon, it’s free, and it gives us an excuse to skip Tuesday … not that I’m advocating that. And there’s pizza and soda if you wear your Mānoa Maniacs T-shirt.)

Speaking of Monday’s game, anyone want to grab a late dinner before we head over? Just asking out loud, to see if anyone is interested. If so, suggest a place.

  234. Jason November 15, 2008 10:04 pm

Of course, to ask requires that it be out loud. I guess I was thinking about “thinking out loud.” But I’m more than thinking, I’m asking. Geez, I really need to stop taking naps. My head is a mess right now.

    Katie update:

The vet talked with several of the surgeons at the different animal hospitals in San Diego and they downgraded the chance of success for the surgery. The old estimate was 60% but the new estimate was for less than 50%…I told Lori 50% but it was actually lower than that. That estimate assumed that they knew where the tumor was…but they actually do not even after 2 days of searching.

The vet kind of suggested we do the medical treatment (a steroid that fights the insulin-generating tumor), especially since just feeding her special food got her blood sugar to improve so well. Katie started on her medication today and it helped her a LOT. She actually ran around and played today, something she didn’t have energy for in months.

We would do the surgery if the vet thought it had a good chance to help. We don’t want to put her through a surgery if it doesn’t help and she has to start on this drug anyway. Katie is 10 now and beat cancer once already…I hope we have our dog for many, many more years.

  238. Garret November 15, 2008 10:13 pm

BCS Guru predicts the BCS standings after what happened today.

Not a SINGLE team in last week’s top 15 lost. Not one. I figured it was going to be ho-hum this Saturday, but not comatose.

So, not to waste any more of your, or my time, here’s the projected top 15, with just one change from last week: I expect BYU to move up from No. 17 to No. 15, thus assuring that a non-BCS conference team will be invited to a BCS bowl, no matter what happens.

The Guru’s projected BCS standings for Week 12:

    1. Alabama, 2. Texas Tech, 3. Texas, 4. Florida, 5. Oklahoma, 6. USC, 7. Utah, 8. Penn State, 9. Boise State, 10. Georgia, 11. Ohio State, 12. Missouri, 13. Oklahoma State, 14. Ball State, 15. Brigham Young.

  240. Jason November 15, 2008 10:18 pm

jm2375: Obviously, I meant more of a mess than usual. 😀

  241. Garret November 15, 2008 10:19 pm

BCS Guru analyzed the top teams and found that Alabama has played by far the easiest schedule so far for those teams.

As you can see, aside from being undefeated, Alabama may have the weakest resume of the group, yet it is ranked No. 1. And every other team has some strong arguments and some holes in its presentation as well. Let’s review them one by one:

No.1 Alabama – The Tide played the softest schedule of the group. One of its two best wins – over then-No. 9 Clemson – has been thoroughly discredited as the Tigers are 4-5 and just fired their coach. Basically, Alabama is living off its one great half against Georgia. If the Tide go on and finish the season 13-0, with a win over Florida in the SEC championship game, fine, send them to the BCS title game. But one loss anywhere should immediately eliminate ‘Bama from this discussion.

  242. Garret November 15, 2008 10:21 pm

BCS Guru predicts Texas Tech vs. *Florida* in the national title game. He predicts that Utah will be in the Sugar Bowl and no other BCS buster will make it (no BSU, Ball State, etc.).

As a bonus, here’s the Guru’s latest BCS bowl projections –

    *

BCS Championship – Florida vs. Texas Tech
    *

Rose Bowl – USC vs. Penn State
    *

Fiesta Bowl – Texas vs. Ohio State
    *

Sugar Bowl – Alabama vs. Utah
    *

Orange Bowl – ACC champion vs. Big East champion

Anybody besides me find it hard to follow the UH Wahine baskteball team? I used look forward to all the games when Vince Goo was coaching. But after Goo retired, I find myself just looking at the scores, if I remember to, that is. It isn’t just about the wins and losses…it’s something else. I can’t put my finger on it, but I no longer feel the need or any real desire to watch.

Men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, I still thoroughly enjoy — although women’s volleyball is missing some of that exhuberance that the Ah Mow teams and predecessors had. UH Baseball, I like to listen to on the radio when I’m working. Men’s basketball is still a promise in making. I’m still looking forward to seeing what Nash’s thumbprint on the program will look like.

Football, win or lose… I follow.

  245. Committed Road Warrior November 15, 2008 10:46 pm

Hmm. So going by what Garret referenced from the “BCS Guru” 🙄 , then next week’s rivalry matchup between BYU and Utah is essentially a play-in game to the BCS?

  248. not far away anymore November 15, 2008 11:39 pm

I think what the “BCS Guru” meant was that having BYU up at #15 would ensure a mid major made the BCS not specifically Utah or BYU. For BYU to get in, they would need to be ranked higher than Utah, Boise State and Ball State. That is unlikely unless they beat Utah and both Boise and Ball State lose. BYU being #15 and being ranked higher than a BCS conference champion would get them in even if Utah, Boise and Ball State all lost and fell out of the top 16. Using last week’s rankings, if Utah, Boise, and Ball State all lost and all fell below #16, there wouldn’t be any mid major that meet automatic qualifier status.

I guess these thefts are everywhere…Colorado football players had things stolen from their lockers DURING their game yesterday!

University Police are investigating multiple reports from Colorado football players of items being taken from their lockers during Saturday night’s game against Oklahoma State at Folsom Field.

Entry to the locker room requires a key code and the doors to the locker room are usually manned by stadium security throughout games. It is unclear how someone unfamiliar to the program could have gained entry.

Sophomore place-kicker Aric Goodman said his cell phone was taken from his locker during the Buffs’ 30-17 loss the No. 11 Cowboys.

  260. Garret November 16, 2008 6:32 am

I don’t think that the Warriors will get upset when Cincy does their pregame prayer at Aloha Stadium….

This time it was Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe and several of his players who were offended because the Bearcats gathered at midfield, held hands in a circle around the logo and said a pre-game prayer, as they do at midfield before every road game.

Brian Kelly said today that Kragthorpe “confronted” him about it before the game.

“It turned into a situation where a couple of their players came down onto the field and had to be restrained by some of their players,” Kelly said. “Steve and I talked about it before the game. We disagreed about the manner in which it was handled but kept it professional and moved on.

The pre-game prayer is a ritual that UC has been following for two years. After the team bus pulls up to the stadium, the players and coaches get off the bus, walk onto the field and the players say a prayer at mid-field.

“Everything that we do, every day we talk about respecting our opponent,” Kelly said. “We’re not going to taunt. I’m not going to tolerate that kind of behavior from our football team. It’s talked about every day. It’s just unfortunate the way it was perceived.”

  262. Garret November 16, 2008 6:37 am

Looks like if Utah beats BYU, Utah will get a BCS spot and BYU will get the Las Vegas Bowl. It seems that if BYU beats Utah, BYU will get the Las Vegas Bowl and Utah will get the Poinsettia Bowl.

A win over the Cougars is pretty much all that stands in the way of the Utes’ second BCS berth since 2004.

A loss, however, would alter the landscape significantly — and probably bring the Utes back to Qualcomm Stadium for a second straight appearance in the Poinsettia Bowl. They defeated Navy, 35-32 in last year’s game.

Larry Baber, president of the Holiday Bowl committee which oversees the game, said such a scenario is possible because he believes the Las Vegas Bowl would take BYU with the first pick it has of Mountain West Conference teams. The Poinsettia Bowl has the second selection.

  263. d1島 November 16, 2008 6:39 am

    Garret,

    Howzit!
Gee, I don’t see what the problem is (or was) with that pre-game prayer. If they are, in fact, doing it immediately after arriving at the stadium, very few fans or opposing players should even be around.

The Poinsettia Bowl is trying to arrange a game with Boise State vs. BYU or TCU! If Utah gets the only non-BCS spot, that is their plan…that would be a great game, but BSU fans would be upset to have the home team miss their home bowl two years in a row.

The most likely opponent? A team from the Western Athletic Conference because the Pac-10 likely won’t have enough bowl-eligible teams to meet its contractual obligation to the Poinsettia Bowl.

Boise State tops the list, but would likely go to the BCS if Utah loses to BYU.

If the Utes prevail, the Poinsettia Bowl has hopes of pitting the Broncos against BYU or TCU.

I can’t imagine why the LV Bowl people are really thrilled about BY-Who coming to town.
As Bobby Curran likes to poke fun at them about: there’s two things that their fans show up with- a Bible and a hundred dollar bill. And they don’t let go of either of them! 😆

  266. Garret November 16, 2008 6:45 am

    d1shima,

    Howzit!

Years ago under their previous coach, Cincy players stomped on the logo at midfield. Because of that, Louisville’s coach didn’t like Cincy going to the logo to pray. Louisville’s own fans are not upset at Cincy and they don’t seem to understand their coach’s objection, if the comments I read from them are representative.

So, we should expect Cincy players to pray at midfield when they get to Aloha Stadium. I doubt that anyone will get upset…

  267. wafan November 16, 2008 6:46 am

    Good morning Warriors!

Had the chance to sleep in today. Heck, after yesterday my body hurt and I was beat.

Looks like everyone had a wonderful time at karaoke last night. Yahoo!

  268. d1島 November 16, 2008 6:48 am

Wassup wafan! (like the alliteration? Ooo, I did it again! 😆 )

No problem about the game yesterday, what you ended up doing was much more worthy. Congratulations!

  269. Garret November 16, 2008 6:49 am

    d1shima,

The Bowl folks like that the BYU fans will buy tickets and BYU games get good TV ratings. I would think that the city of Las Vegas would prefer some other team…but aren’t Utah fans similar in their non-gambling to BYU fans?

  270. Garret November 16, 2008 6:51 am

Another note on the problem for SDSU when the city tears down Qualcomm Stadium.

SDSU’s football future is a concern, however, because there are no other facilities in the area large enough to host games.

  271. d1島 November 16, 2008 6:54 am

    Garret,

Not sure. Although if I had to guess, I’d say the likelihood is that there would be less church influence at UofU.
I was checking room rates in LV and noticed that $20-30 range rates are available in abundance so I guess they’d want any team that travels well to be invited.

  272. wafan November 16, 2008 6:56 am

I really do not understand why they got so upset over the prayer at mid-field. It is not as if they were showing disrespect to the team, school or, heaven forbid, the logo/mascot. Geez. People need to keep things in perspective. It is just a game!

  273. d1島 November 16, 2008 7:02 am

    Garret,
I think you posted something about such a humdrum day yesterday with no upsets in the BCS top 15.
My Pigskin Picks were so easy that I’m sitting with a perfect sheet thru yesterday. Hence, my interest in all-thngs Vegas. 😀
We’ll see how it goes today in the NFL. I’m sure there are a lot of other perfect sheets out there. (probably including your folks)
But for now, at least, I can hope….Vegas, baby!

  274. d1島 November 16, 2008 7:04 am

    wafan,

Yeah and as Garret says, it was years ago under a different Coach that the stomping stuff occurred. I’m not so sure that Kragthorpe wasn’t still at Tulsa when that was going on.

  275. wafan November 16, 2008 7:06 am

    d1 . . .

    Like the alliteration.

Glad to hear Linfield did so well! How did #2 son do in the game?

  276. Garret November 16, 2008 7:09 am

    wafan,

By the way, thank you very much for your analogy suggestions! For a lot of reasons why I cannot explain in this e-mail, your analogy of the change from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs was highly relevant for the article!

There were so many great suggestions by everyone…but the light bulb analogy was perfect. Now I hope that the reporter’s editors do not cut the article too much due to space constraints.

  277. Garret November 16, 2008 7:12 am

    d1shima,

Good luck with your Pigskin picks! My folks normally pick an upset or two, so they probably are out of the running now. They had a great time with their free Vegas trip last year, and I’m pulling for you to win this time!

  278. d1島 November 16, 2008 7:15 am

    wafan,

He got PT and even showed up in the stats with an unassisted tackle.
This time they got it right and credited him properly. In previous games they listed the other guy with the same jersey #.
An easy mistake since physically they are so similar…NOT! 👿

  279. wafan November 16, 2008 7:20 am

    Garret . . .

No problem. So what did I win? HA!

  280. wafan November 16, 2008 7:21 am

    d1 . . .

You know footballers. Once they get the uniform on they all look similar!

Is that why they call it a uniform?

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

  281. d1島 November 16, 2008 7:25 am

    wafan,

9 inches taller and 54 pounds heavier is stretching the similarities!

  282. d1島 November 16, 2008 7:26 am

Time to look for breakfast and then hoping for my picks!

    See you laters…..

  283. dave from ny November 16, 2008 7:34 am

kinda chilly this am so now can’t get back into the sleep mode so turned on the comput to see whats up. was looking for da winna but guess fearless leader still sleeping.

if the season end and garret’s predictions holds up then things really suck for bs and wac. here’s hoping byu beats utah, gotta pull for the wac now. 11/22 is the day both battle for mw championship. hating myself for saying this but timidly saying go cougars.

Today is Madden day- for the Redskins. Still basking in the Madden-love Colt received in preseason! And for the gamers in the audience- here is a great interview he did with Matt Terl on his video game!

interesting side take so what is your thoughts on this.

last night attended a good friends party. he planned to celebrate finally paying off his mortgage. was a great party with fuuuud, fun, family just like tgate. but one part of the evening came around where he gathered everyone to witness the burning of his mortage. was funny but latter the conversation turned to where this tradition began and was it smart to do it. did he need it as proof or certification for someting? anyway its done but I was curious what the tsaiko know about this tradition? something to chat about over kofe.
