Warriors-Wave rewind after sweep

Thought it a very impressive win tonight for Hawaii. first time in five home matches it didn’t go five. The Warriors kept lots of pressure on with their serves and much better tonight keeping it in (6 aces, 8 errors). Friday they had 21 errors and 8 aces.

The game plan was to go to the middles early. Waves continued to commit and had to honor how Ramos was setting. It set up a lot of 1-on-1s for Sedore and Zarkovic.

These were the first two matches I had seen this season and I was impressed with both Ramos and Zarkovic. Ramos set a great game tonight, not to0 shabby for someone who wasn’t a true setter coming into college.

Wade said that it’s Ramos’ job to lose and that Wechsung will have to beat Ramos out to start again. Wade said that Ramos has a better feeling for the college level right now and has 2 tours of duty in the league while at UOP which is an advantage.

Pepperdine came out surprisingly flat. But they haven’t played well here recently, losing 2 in 2011 and now 2 in 2013.  Torres was off, so was Taylor and Kalmbach, normally a 435 hitter, was 365 tonight but just 6 kills in 11 sets.

Overall, thought Hawaii played very well both nights. probably should have won in four Friday. They have a lot of depth and youth. Warriors started four sophomores and a freshman tonight, along with a junior transfer setter and senior libero in Cheape.

Great weekend for the Warriors. It looks like something just clicked for them this weekend. I knew going in this was going to be team on the young/inexperienced side of things, especially at key positions. But clearly there is a lot of talent and upside to this team, when they are able to play with some consistency, and with a set lineup.

Can they keep it up? MPSF play can be very bruising.

Ramos wasn’t a “true setter” coming out of high school? I thought he was only a setter at Roosevelt. Did he play a different position in club? Just wondering…

Also — haven’t been here a while. Great new look for the blog!

Hawaii is still not ranked. Only the top team to receive points.
