Warriors to USC tourney, new assistant (updated)

see new info on comments

UH is competing in USC’s Fall tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Galen Center, 12-team event

Not officially announced but Siki Zarkovic’s dad Milan is the new assistant.

He finally got in after quite a delay last week due to the LAX airport problems.

He has quite the coaching resume … head coach of Serbian junior national team and Al Ain VC in the Serbian VB Federation.

this is what I got off the FIVB.org.

He started his playing career in 1976 for VC “Ribnica” from Kraljevo, where he stayed until 1982. He then moved to VC “Partizan” in Belgrade where he managed to become the captain of the team. He remained with the club until 1989.

His coaching career began in 1990 in Cyprus. Up until 1992 he was the coach of VC “Anorthosis” from Limassol. From 1992 until 1997 he coached in VC “Enosis Paralimni”, and from 1997 until 2000, in VC “Pafiakos Silogos Athlopaidion”. During the time he spent in Cyprus, he won several Championship and Cup titles. In 2000 returned to Serbia as coach of VC “Partizan.” For the next four seasons he remained with the club, and won both the Championship and Cup titles. Then he went abroad once again this time to Tunisia to VC “CSS Sfax”, where he managed to win both the Championship and Cup titles again.

He again returned to “Partizan” in 2006 and remains in the position until now. In 2010/2011 season he won the Championship title with the team from Serbia’s capital city. In the meantime, as of 2001, Zarkovic has been the coach of the junior men’s team.

Over the years, he managed to obtain some notable results with the national team. He won the gold medal at the Balkan Championships three times, and finished as the runner-up on three further occasions. He led his team to fourth place at the 2004 European Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, and to fifth place in 2006 in Kazan, Russia. The biggest success of the Junior Men’s national team was the bronze medal at the 2010 European Championship. In addition Zarkovic participated with his team at the World Championships twice, and finished seventh both times.

Very interesting news. Is this with the blessing of the head coach?

  2. Cindy Luis November 7, 2013 12:00 pm

    I’m assuming it’s been blessed.
It’s been in the works for a couple of months but paperwork slow to clear, from what Wade told me back then.
Saw the new assistant Monday but didn’t have a chance to talk to him.

  3. Cindy Luis November 7, 2013 12:08 pm

SC coach Ferguson told me the schedule could change. Matches played best of 3.

Field for the event includes UCLA, Pepperdine, Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, Pacific, Hawaii and Cal Baptist, plus non-conference foes Lewis and Grand Canyon.
Admission is free. The Galen Center Pavilion is adjacent to the Galen Center, with the volleyball courts on the upstairs level.
As of now, Friday at 5:30 p.m., Lewis faces Cal State Northridge on Court 1, UCLA plays Cal Baptist on Court 2, USC hosts Hawaii 1 on Court 3 and Long Beach State plays Hawaii 2 on Court 4. Then at 7:15 p.m., Cal State Northridge meets Hawaii 1 on Court 1, UCLA plays Hawaii 2 on Court 2 and it’s Long Beach State versus Cal Baptist on Court 3.
The Trojans will battle Lewis on the Galen Center Arena’s main court immediately following the Women of Troy’s 7 p.m. Pac-12 home match against Oregon.
    Saturday’s competition begins at 9:45 a.m.

  4. Warriorfan November 7, 2013 1:12 pm

Thanks for some warrior news Cindy. Just what I needed.
This sounds like an awesome hire, could bring out the best out of Siki and hopefully Coach Milan can bring in some more serbian junior national team members to UH.

  5. Grammy November 7, 2013 3:31 pm

Makes sense to scout and bring in European recruits/players. Good get by Coach, hope he contacts with junior girls/women, too. Go Warriors.

  6. Cindy Luis November 7, 2013 4:10 pm

    5. not sure if that’s the reason behind Siki’s dad, and it’s not his job to recruit for the Wahine. however they do now have a solid contact in the area. the problem will be in making sure there’s not pro history with players, a loa Theocharidis.

  7. LC November 7, 2013 4:41 pm

This program is on Ben Jays list to get the Ax when he implements his deep budget cuts,

  8. Borislav November 7, 2013 4:51 pm

    Go Warriors!

  9. Kazu November 7, 2013 6:30 pm

If their going to cut any programs, they should start with those that don’t charge admission.

  10. Warriorfan November 7, 2013 8:17 pm

Ben Jay will get the ax before the mens volleyball team does lol

anyway not surprised that “LC ” says something negative about men’s volleyball

  11. Cindy Luis November 7, 2013 8:37 pm

    7. don’t see men’s vb being cut. too much potential for revenue. Agree with Kazu, i’d look at golf and tennis first if they’re going to cut something.

  12. setaone November 8, 2013 6:16 am

Question regarding Ann’s article this morning. Is Sarah Mendoza really getting more playing time? She is just coming in for Manu-Olevao instead of Taylor. Still three rotations through the back.

I guess if she is talking about when Shoji needs to go to the double sub Mendoza comes out for Higgins, then yes she gets a little more time coming in for Tai.

I like Mendoza and like her coming in for Tai.

  13. LC November 8, 2013 6:23 am

It does seem like she is out there more.

  14. setaone November 8, 2013 7:21 am

I think that the biggest change wasn’t Mendoza being out there more, its that Manu-Olevao doesn’t need to stress about passing as much and can concentrate on offense.

  15. chink November 8, 2013 8:12 am

6: I thought they changed the rules and Theocharidis’ situation today would be okay.

  16. mei mei November 8, 2013 8:24 am

thanks for the Info Cindy, this is awesome news! i heart Siki – he is an amazing player! his dad is certainly a good catch!

    12. agreed, i Like Mendoza coming in for Tai and she covers more court in the back …

  17. LC November 8, 2013 12:31 pm

Where is Miller getting these attendance numbers from ?

The NCAA hasn’t updated anything since the Final Report in 2012 and it looks like Diane Nordstrom, at Wisconsin only puts out a final report at the end of the season.

  18. LC November 8, 2013 12:37 pm

Has anyone else noticed that there doesn’t seem to be as much interest in Wahine VB since they lost to UCSB ?

Sure the attendance has been ok but the internet chatter has dropped way off. I still track the usual places where all the conversations take place between fans and it has been really quite, it’s like no one wants to talk about anything.

~~ From the Who Cares! Department ~~
Matches I’ll Be Watching This Weekend

    Friday (Nov 8)
    Hawai’i @ Cal Poly

    Saturday (Nov 9)
Kansas @ Texas ….. It’s starting to look like sameold sameold – Texas is breaking away from the pack in the Big 12 while Penn State is doing the same in the Big Ten.

    CSU Northridge @ LBSU

    Hawai’i @ UC Santa Barbara

    Sunday (Nov 10)
Nebraska @ Minnesota ….. According to the latest RPI report released by the NCAA on Monday, 7 Big Ten teams appear in the top 25, the most among all conferences. Penn State leads the way at #2, followed by #8 Nebraska, #10 Minnesota, #13 Wisconsin, #22 Michigan State, #23 Illinois, and #25 Michigan.

    Go Bows!

  20. Kazu November 8, 2013 1:25 pm

UC Irvine swept Cal State Northridge today.

  21. Kazu November 8, 2013 1:32 pm

Sorry wrong day. They neva play yet.

  22. Warriorfan November 8, 2013 1:53 pm

18, I’ve lost interest since their play dropped off.

  23. Cubicle1126 November 8, 2013 3:09 pm

maybe the casual fans have lost interest. but probably the die-hards are still following.

warriorfan — maybe some of your interested has lessened … but you’re still coming to the blog, at least! 🙂

  24. Beauston November 8, 2013 3:10 pm

18 initial improvement from the start of the season, the team seemed to have hit a wall and is now sitting at a plateau. Difference between good coaching to bad ones- they know how to get their team out of this funk.

That UCSB is so embrassing I cant get myself to watch the replay.

  25. Cubicle1126 November 8, 2013 3:12 pm

mendoza probably won’t necessarily get “more” playing time. but by playing middle back on defense, she may get more touches or opportunities for digs.

  26. LC November 8, 2013 3:12 pm

I haven’t lost interest but maybe some confidence.

  27. Cubicle1126 November 8, 2013 3:15 pm

i think part of the seeming drop off in posting is that hawaii had a 2-week layoff mixed in during the stretch of 3 losses in 5 matches. there weren’t a lot of articles in the media also. there was that alumnae match/scrimmage during the layoff, but since it wasn’t televised or aired in any meaningful way, it was tougher to discuss/chat/post about it.

  28. Cubicle1126 November 8, 2013 3:19 pm

lost confidence is easier to regain than hope.

this team can still turn things around … i hope!

  29. tako November 8, 2013 4:02 pm

There is no try, in do. the Wahine are for real. stay tuned in… at the end of the day, they have done their BEST whatever the outcome. When the team wins we all win, when they lose we all lose, when they cry, we cry, when they laugh, we laugh… support the team with positive blessings..

  30. jmy November 8, 2013 5:32 pm

UH playing very well so far against the Mustangs…

  31. Kazu November 8, 2013 6:31 pm

Wahine sweeps Cal Poly. Next stop UCSB. Go Bows !

  32. sharene November 8, 2013 9:03 pm

I haven’t lost interest at all…it makes the wins much sweeter. I enjoyed the Long Beach game, although I really didn’t find their coach amusing at all. I just felt it was poor sportsmanship. I think Cubicle hit it on the spot when she said the lack of interest seems to be tied to the playing schedules and the losses, esp. since they were away. It seems like forever that we have seen the team play. The season seemed short and disjointed and maybe that has also affected the team.

  33. sharene November 8, 2013 9:18 pm

With all of the new technology…you’d think they could film the away games the way they used to…I loved seeing Kim Willoughby hitting the Nebraska’s mascot in the head with the VB

  34. OrbitalripZ November 9, 2013 12:26 am

Agree with everyone, the conference season feels short … probably because we’re chasing 2 teams and wish we had more matches so we can catch up or they can lose ground.

Of the 10-week Conference Season, there’s only 4 weeks left (counting this weekend).

    Week 7 [away] = Nov. 8 (Cal Poly) / 9 (Santa Barbara)

    Week 8 = Idle

    Week 9 [home] = Nov. 22 (Davis) / 23 (Northridge)

    Week 10 [away] = Nov. 29 (Riverside) / 30 (Fullerton)

    Selection Sunday

  35. Kazu November 9, 2013 3:07 am

Nice to see Mita spread the ball around to all her hitters. Good job .

  36. LC November 9, 2013 6:02 am

    Great job Mita !

Saw a little bit of swagger returning, hope it continues.

Tai looked great, more nights like last night.

One thing that bothers me is that when they give up points they can give them up in big bunches.

For awhile I thought UCI was going to upset CSUN but it didn’t happen.LBSU gets a crack at them tonight.

Must have been a last minute switch from 1420 to 1500 am.

  37. jake November 9, 2013 6:09 am

yes, LBSU could help na wahine. The see both CSUN and UCSB at home. The just took care of UC Davis
    last night i understand.

  38. View from afar November 9, 2013 9:05 am

Come on all you Hawaii fans within an easy drive to Santa Barbara.
Come on out tonight and support Na Wahine.
    You can make a difference.
    Go Wahine!

  39. chink November 9, 2013 3:00 pm

    6’2″ OH/MB Megan Huff to Hawai’i

  40. LC November 9, 2013 3:07 pm

LOL,true story guys, three days ago I sent an e-mail to Casey the writer of this article at this paper.

Asked her if she knew anything about Megan committing to a college yet.Told her she was in Hawai`i not long ago. She never replied but my e-mail might have set the wheels in motion.

  41. OrbitalRipZ November 9, 2013 3:08 pm

Re: 39 Never been to Santa Barbara. Outside of its world-famous surfing spots (The Point, etc.) know nothing about the city.

Game time: 4:30pm (Hawai’i time). Gauchos have watched the tapes over and over and over again and think they know the Wahine’s every move. Time for the Bows to answer with a battle readiness they haven’t shown since the start of the conference season.

    Go Bows!

  42. LC November 9, 2013 3:18 pm

I have been to Santa Barbara a few times but never to the University. It’s a nice place right on the coast. A lot of older retired folks and Hollywood types in the area. However I always felt the oil platforms were an eye sore.

  43. roofer68 November 9, 2013 3:48 pm

    40. thanks chink. Megan attended the Fullerton and Riverside matches and I guess came away impressed. With the grad of Kaela, Emily and TK hopefully the three frontline recruits can contribute immediately.

  44. Cindy Luis November 9, 2013 3:59 pm

    17. all you have to do is go to each school and look at stats.

  45. Cindy Luis November 9, 2013 4:05 pm

    12. Mendoza is in there more as a serving sub and staying in the back row.

  46. Grammy November 9, 2013 7:19 pm

Alright! Payback for taking the Wahine at home. Lot of heart tonight. Kept fighting back especially sets 4 & 5. Block showed up and we got great play from everyone. Go Wahine! One point, one set, one match at a time. Focus, focus, focus. You can do it!

  47. Pudundo November 9, 2013 7:29 pm

Hawai’i wins at UCSB 3-2, 15-12 in the 5th thanks to a service error by UCSB.
Great to see Vorster in on blocks & getting kills. Keep it going Wahine, I believe in you!
