Wahine banquet, another coach hire update, etc.

Details are still being worked out but the Wahine banquet won’t be a traditional one.
It will be held during the afternoon of Monday, Jan. 19, the MLK holiday weekend.

As for the hire, have been told it won’t happen until Friday at the earliest, more likely next week. Can we say … Red Tape?

If you have noticed that the comment section appears and disappears, it’s part of the process of upgrading the site. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I am picking up the Wahine basketball beat through the Big West season so Volleyshots won’t be as active as it was in the fall. I will covering Warrior Volleyball this week while Tsai gets to go to Texas to cover the national championship football game. Cool assignment for him.

So who will run a Wahine basketball blog ?

  2. Cindy Luis January 6, 2015 7:50 pm

Brian McInnis has been doing a basketball blog, mostly men but he has done the women as well. I’ll feed him some items when I have them so check his Court Sense.

kevin wong (or a poster claiming to be him) just posted on VT that he did not apply for the assistant position.

also was the job posted as an “assistant” coach or “associate” coach? sometimes in these things, the terminology matters …

just thought i’d throw that out there … dunno if cindy or others may have some insight…

that’s a bummer I think Kevin Wong would have been a great UH beach volleyball coach.

  5. uhfan January 7, 2015 5:19 pm

I really hope its not Hall

  6. Kazu January 7, 2015 6:43 pm

To bad they don’t make the applicants public. Would be intresting to know how many from Hawaii had applied and how many from out of State.

  7. warriorfan January 7, 2015 7:17 pm

    5. Me too, no offense to him, he’s doing a good job with UH men, they need t0 keep that momentum, wahine need someone with experience in beach volleyball and recruiting girls.

  8. warriorfan January 7, 2015 10:17 pm

I noticed the beach volleyball roster was updated agian, Still lists Wong as coach, and Has emily Maglio listed, which I find kind of odd, I would figure Greeley would play beach instead.
Also no Gianna Guinasso which is odd as well, unless she left.

  9. Kazu January 8, 2015 5:55 am

    8. Maybe she followed Coach Wong or maybe they put Maglio in error.

Maybe they put Maglio wrong. Gianna is back in the island

    3. you can read the job description on Hawaii.edu. Click on Work at UH
It was for associate head coach indoor/head sand.

    5. what’s wrong with Hall? ton of beach playing experience and indoor coaching.
here’s the link to his bio, which includes his AVP experience. What he does lack is recent recruiting with women. He was with UCSD women 2004-07.

    8. here is the link to sand roster. likely will be updated after school goes back in session Monday. Greeley is not playing sand.

Anyone knows if Jenn Carey applied for vacant assistant coaches position? I just saw her at Kahala Mall with Cayley Thurlby. I know she does not have the experience of a Scott Wong or a Jeff Hall but I think she could be a good fit.

I figured no established coach is going to uproot their family and move here under this situation in which Shoji could leave at any time. UH is going to have to settle for some up and comers or some like Jenn who is single and does not have a family to uproot.

She been in the program so she knows Shoji. She also has west coast ties and she has experience at Texas AM and now at Georgia Tech. UH is also tight with money and probably cannot afford someone in the pay range of Scott Wong. Jenn could be a good fit IMHO.

thanks Cindy — i had figured the posting had been taken down. i checked today and couldn’t find it.

  15. warriorfan January 8, 2015 2:54 pm

maybe if the UH men hadn’t been underachieving the past few seasons, I’d be more a fan of Hall, They had a really good 2015 recruiting class though, so maybe they are turning it around.

  16. Kazu January 8, 2015 4:10 pm

    13. Jenn Carey now assist. at Cal and Cindy mentioned awhile back that she got married.

  17. Cindy Luis January 8, 2015 4:57 pm

don’t think Carey applied. I know that Thurlby didn’t
