Wade on Bobby's show

Wade was on right after 8 a.m. He talked a little about the wins over Pepperdine but more about Stanford. about how the Cardinal are using a young 6-7 setter, son of Don Shaw, who many will remember as the coach of Stanford women and men. Daughter Jordan here a couple of times with St. Mary’s the past few years.

Kind of the usual talk about how tough the MPSF. Bobby asked about the possibility of the Big West adding men’s volleyball. He said the talk continues but what they need is for Big West teams to add the sport, such as Cal Poly and Fullerton. He said the fact the Pacific is leaving the Big West does hurt but he thought UC San Diego would jump at the chance to join the Big West if offered. He said UOP could stay in the Big West for men’s volleyball if that league was created.

They talked a little about the state of men’s volleyball, how it’s huge at the junior level and DIII. and how he hopes the NCAA will see fit to expand the tournament to 6 or 8 teams. That the Coastal Carolina League might be a possibility for a play-in game, maybe taking on the winner of the EIVA.

Bobby asked about who has made the biggest jump in growth since fall. Wade said Davis Holt, a basketball player who has turned into a very good volleyball player.

Someone called about Koby Kanetake. He said that Kanetake seemed to be overwhelmed ‘once the lights came on’ and that they were working at getting him back on the court. Nearly used him against Pepperdine but didn’t.

I’m sure others may have picked up on some other things. Feel free to add.

Holt a basketball player? I don’t think he played basketball his senior year at Maryknoll, but played for Ku’ikahi for at least two, maybe three years and Maryknoll volleyball the same. Does Wade know anything about his players?

Imo, people need to be resigned to the fact that the MPSF will not be broken apart, ever…the real growth in the men’s game (as Cindy alluded) is at the Div.III level.
UH-Hilo and BYUH should jump on that electric bandwagon.

The Big West as an emergent MVB conference would be nice, but realtistically speaking ONLY $Cal Poly$ could be remotely possible…they did briefly have a men’s team back in the day with their many re$ource$. The PAC isn’t ready for its own MVB conference either.
    *Cindy, Ku’ulei>>>”Mott Gym” :-)*

Going to an eight team Div.II style “Elite Eight” format for VB means ultimately more finances divvied by the NCAA; I don’t see that occurring in economically difficult times.

I do really like Holt and Kanetake, also. The two should be on the court for as much as possible.

Hagins is apparently gone from the team.

Another prized MB can be found at Irvine Valley (Jr) College. She sat the last year out; Tom Pestolesi has kept her in shape, however.

It’s cheaper for CA / TX students to attend school @UH, out of state, than it is for said student to continue on her own @ a CA school.

Thanks for the info Cindy, Did anyone catch the full interview?

  5. Cindy Luis January 29, 2013 1:21 pm

Karmady, just passing along what Wade said. I know Holt’s been a vb player. my son coaches for Ku’ikahi. Son also helped coach Ramos 16-18s.

  6. Cindy Luis January 29, 2013 1:26 pm

As for the Big West adding men’s volleyball. i just don’t see it since the Big West currently runs the MPSF. don’t see them running two leagues.
the real potential, as discussed here previously would be for the PacWest to add men’s volleyball. BYUH, HPU and UHH all previously offered the sport. A long time ago but … Sad that Grand Canyon, which offered men’s volleyball, left to go DI and is in the MIVA for VB. PacWest said Grand Canyon’s departure did hurt the momentum that had been gained for adding the sport. Last I spoke with the PacWest Commissioner Bob Hogue … we thought that if the schools would add men’s volleyball and women’s sand that the gender equity numbers would balance.
bothered by Wade claiming Title IX. it’s not technically. More correctly its the gender equity requirement based on percentage of male-to-female enrollment ratio for athletic scholarships opportunities.

#3 Annie Mitchem would be a top recruit if she is interested for 2014. If she redshirted in 2012, plays in 2013 and gets her AA, she would be an interesting addition.

Not throwing rocks at you, Cindy, I understood you were just the messenger. Was merely commenting on Wade’s seeming disconnection from something as basic as a player’s sports background. Also knew about your Ku’ikahi connection as you’ve mentioned it before. Peace.

  9. Cindy Luis January 29, 2013 2:37 pm

No worries. i was not taking any offense.
I think when i quoted Wade about Ramos not being a setter. he meant not being trained to be a college setter. my son got on me about that since he worked with Ramos as a setter at Ku’ikahi.
As for Hagins. have been told she transferred to Idaho but nothing on their website.

  10. Warriorfan January 29, 2013 5:19 pm

Did Holt grow up playing volleyball? because most high level players play since they are like 12 years old.
I don’t see the big deal of Wade saying Holt was a basketball player.. because he probably grew up playing basketball first.

  11. Warriorfan January 29, 2013 5:20 pm

I meant most high level players starting in MPSF start playing club volleyball at 12 years old…. if Davis only played club his final years of high school then he is obviously new to the game still.

KIKI 990AM Radio Honolulu (…weekday evenings),
Michael Savage out of the Bronx, UH-Manoa, and now San Francisco is sooo FUNNY!

5.4, Jewish man, with a brilliant mind and a most hysterical mouth.

    He’s worth the listening.

    Manuela lives!!!

30 years after being lost in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she’s made it perhaps on termites.

    Wow.

  15. Ron January 30, 2013 9:23 am

Cindy, caught you on radio this AM. I hope the new recruit’s sister’s name rhymes Shade.

  16. vballfreak808 January 30, 2013 1:22 pm

    There’s a new recruit?

  17. Cindy Luis January 30, 2013 5:03 pm

there is. but need to chat with the family first

  18. Warriorfan January 30, 2013 6:23 pm

DIfferent than Greeley? local or mainland?

  19. Warriorfan January 30, 2013 6:34 pm

Ron do you mean you hope it’s Sirena Vorster??

I wouldn’t mind Maddie Dilfer or taylor Agost either.

  20. vballfreak808 January 30, 2013 7:37 pm

Hoping it is Brooke McDermott from Florida.

  21. Warriorfan January 30, 2013 8:12 pm

Yes Mcdermott I forgot about her. She seems to have a lot of potential.

  22. Anon. January 31, 2013 1:46 am

No offense but I hope its not Jade’s sister (as a walk-on, sure). Hey, maybe it’s Amy Hunter. Or maybe Cindy was just talking about Greeley.

  23. vballfreak808 January 31, 2013 5:33 am

Found out who it is. Didnt expect that. The place where I found it questioned if they were playing sand or indoor. Are they playing indoor Cindy?

  24. vballfreak808 January 31, 2013 6:01 am

Just saw the article now. I can’t believe Monica is leaving. I would understand if it because of playing time but I think fans still loved her. But glad Kaela’s sister is on board.

  25. po'okela January 31, 2013 7:37 am

no surprise that a setter came in. we will need a backup to higgins after uiato graduates.

kyra will not be used as an option as OPP. she has the same type of awkward approach as her sister but doesn’t get as high nor does she terminate the ball as hard but she has lots of potential to be a great setter; however, i still forsee higgins running the show after uiato leaves.

  26. Warriorfan January 31, 2013 8:31 am

    Monica leaving say what???

  27. Warriorfan January 31, 2013 8:59 am

I just read the article so I guess it’s true, she will be missed. I thought her sets to the middles(Kalei in particular) were great.

Also that means Higgins will not be redshirting and will be getting a lot of playing time. and maybe UH is getting a transfer coming in since Stauber was on scholarship?? Unless it goes to Kyra Goodman. UH could really use another middle.

  28. Cindy Luis January 31, 2013 9:01 am

The ‘familial’ connection was Goodman’s sister. But Ann was working on the story so … see new post with her story today. I don’t think anyone should be surprised that Stauber is leaving … in some ways.

  29. Warriorfan January 31, 2013 9:16 am

im just surprised she is leaving now and didn’t leave before the second semester started. I hope she goes to school where she can start.

  30. Warriorfan January 31, 2013 9:19 am

    25. Where have you seen Kyra Goodman play???

  31. Cindy Luis January 31, 2013 9:27 am

WF: don’t know if she is still in school or not. but it would make since to be at a new school for spring practice?
as for KGII, maybe redshirt. I haven’t seen her play as a setter.

  32. mauna January 31, 2013 1:01 pm

I’m agreeing with you Cindy, I see KGII redshirting and backing up Tayler in 2014, just to stagger the setters after Mita grads. Also agree with WF we all are hoping to hear about a middle signing on, mighty thin there. Pestolesi connection Annie Mitchem?
