Tuesday checkin: Congrats to Anae

Another early practice for the team. They were loose and ready to go

Think I mentioned that most of them leave this afternoon, 3 players and the SID are making the overnight flight. Believe the 3 players had class they couldn’t miss.

Shoji wanted an extra day to acclimate, especially since it’s going to be cold.
slight chance of snow. warming to a downright balmy 50 as a high expected Friday and Saturday.
Huff reminded teammates to pack cold weather stuff.

try ask Scott if he’s considering applying for the HC position at Pepperdine.

  2. warriorfan December 2, 2014 12:34 pm

I think Pepp will wanna go after Northridge’s head coach.
Northridge may be looking for a new coach.

  3. Beauston December 2, 2014 1:19 pm

    What happened with Tanner?

  4. AdmrVT December 2, 2014 1:29 pm

    Cindy,

Is UH expected to release anything on its 2015 VB recruits soon?

  5. AdmrVT December 2, 2014 1:36 pm

#3. Pepperdine (Tanner) had announced the signing of 5 top VB recruits in mid-Dec. too. I believe it was announced that Tanner resigned for “family reasons.” Guess it is like Shoji says – don’t pick a school because of its coach, but because of what the school is.

Still, Pepperdine loses 3 seniors, and will have a young team in 2015.

  6. Beauston December 2, 2014 1:37 pm

Nevermind, I just saw the announcement.
That is too bad, just after 1 season.

  7. Beauston December 2, 2014 1:39 pm

    5 thanks.

  8. Cindy Luis December 2, 2014 1:42 pm

Utah’s Adora Anae was named to the all-Pac 12 all-freshman team today. here’s the link
    http://pac-12.com/article/2014/12/02/pac-12-announces-volleyball-all-conference-honors

  9. Cindy Luis December 2, 2014 1:42 pm

    1. doubt that very seriously.

  10. Cindy Luis December 2, 2014 1:44 pm

    4. Mentioned to the SID yesterday that they still hadn’t had a release. He said he forgot about it. He’s also the SID for men’s basketball, helped with football and women’s basketball. been a little busy.

Is there something in particular you wanted to know about the three?

  11. Cindy Luis December 2, 2014 1:47 pm

Here’s the link to Tanner’s announcement

    http://www.pepperdinesports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/120214aab.html

  12. warriorfan December 2, 2014 2:17 pm

I’d like to hear Shoji’s comments on the three. I know he made a comment about Granato being able to help right away. I wonder what he thinks of Mitchem and Castillo and if he plans to play them on the pins or in the middle.

  13. Cindy Luis December 2, 2014 2:27 pm

I think he’ll wait until they’re in camp to make any decision on who plays where.
I’ll remind him about the comments when I see him at practice Wednesday night at the AAA.

On another note Re: Tanner, his daughter Bailey was named to the all-Pac 12 freshman team. She plays for UW.
Anyway, I’ve got to go pack. Leaving for Seattle tonight.

  14. AdmrVT December 2, 2014 2:48 pm

10 & 13. Nothing specific. Just what comments Coach may have. Know a little about each of them.

Have a good trip, and hopefully a successful one.

  15. jimmy the lock December 2, 2014 3:17 pm

Even the SID gives excuses. No excuses, that’s your job buddy. If you can’t be on the ball then make way for someone else. Typical perceived UH mentality.

    Anyway…

    GO WAHINE!

  16. hollycow December 2, 2014 3:51 pm

    15. j – lock. just my thoughts too. Evidently he’s not organized, no calendar or planner to post reminders.

  17. 'ohanaInBellingham December 2, 2014 4:04 pm

Have a safe trip over here, Wahine and staff!

By the way, if any of you are planning to take pot (in any form) home with you afterwards, please know that it’s only legal to be purchased and consumed within WA. On my last trip back home to O’ahu, my carry-on contents were swabbed and tested. I don’t mean to imply that you are of the type. I know from experience (I have been asked) that folks might confuse the legal purchase with the illegal transport out of WA.

  18. oldtimer808 December 2, 2014 4:14 pm

#13 Auwe the SID to make that lame excuse…I forgot about it. Sounds like my grand kids making excuses. SID I’m sorry but that kind of comment does not fly. That is really pathetic.

  19. Astroboy December 2, 2014 4:23 pm

Maybe too early to ask, but does anyone know what the coverage will be for friday’s game for those of us on the mainland who don’t have OC subscriptions? We’ve had excellent away-game video coverage until now because BigWest tv has been restreaming the OC-16 feed. Not sure if they will do that, or if the NCAA will provide their own streaming?

  20. hossana December 2, 2014 4:23 pm

Win or lose, this wahine team has come a long way. There were so many trials and tribulations with Olevao and Ginger subjected to so many criticisms and the team as a whole but, like the girls said, they all stuck together like family, and were able to persevere and make it into the playoffs. Feel bad about Passi leaving the team and wishing her the best just as much as I wish this wahine team and coach shoji the best in Seattle this weekend. If they play their game and play to win, they can beat Duke and you never know if they end up playing against UW they just might come out the victor against all odds. Heck, if Shoji is confident, WHY NOT????

  21. Cubicle1126 December 2, 2014 5:24 pm

    amen, hossana … 🙂

hawaii is more than capable of beating duke. duke is a solid team and will be a tough out, but hawaii can do it.

if they’re fortunate enough to advance, then if they dig deep and gut it out, they can challenge uw. in prior years, uw’s blocking and serving were too much for hawaii. this year, hawaii has a formidable block of its own and tough serving that can bother uw too.

i just don’t want this hawaii team to just roll over. they’ve come a long way. sure, they still battle bouts of inconsistency. but let’s see if they can figure out a way to turn it on at the right time.

play well and make a nice run in this post-season, and it will lay a great foundation for next season, when the team should be much stronger, with solid recruits coming in and valuable experience from the returning players.

  22. Cindy Luis December 2, 2014 5:59 pm

Give the SID a break. He isn’t making excuses. He said he forgot that it hadn’t gotten done.
He is doing his job, and someone else’s. who left with little notice.

The onus is more on Shoji who said he wanted to wait until all three signed. They left the night that Castillo’s paperwork came in. It’s been overlooked. He had other priorities, such as getting the team ready for matches and making the tournament.

But yay, just something else to complain about.

    19. go to GoHuskies.com. they should have links up.
ESPN supposed to be doing some regional coverage. you might check with your cable provider.

  23. hollycow December 2, 2014 6:04 pm

Side note on Annie Mitchem, 17k, .593%, 13d, 7blk, in win tonight. IVC is in the CCCAA Championship next week.

  24. warriorfan December 2, 2014 7:29 pm

Just saw Norene and her Redondo Union team win it in 5 over Mater Dei again to advance to state championship match saturday. Norene was huge down the stretch with a block to give Redondo match point then the final kill with a lot of heat and authority 20-18 in the fifth. She impresses me so much, her court awareness is amazing.

  25. warriorfan December 2, 2014 7:30 pm

    championship will be on twcsportschannel.com

  26. warriorfan December 2, 2014 7:50 pm

Hope Saturday will be a big day for future wahine and current wahine. Annie and Norene in the championship and UH against UW ( fingers crossed)

  27. Cubicle1126 December 2, 2014 8:08 pm

if mitchem can produce just a fraction of her numbers now, she’ll have a tremendous impact when she steps foot here …

  28. warriorfan December 2, 2014 8:13 pm

    27. I think she will be a terror in the Big west, 17 kills out of 27 attempts with just 1 errors, what a beast!

  29. Maverick December 2, 2014 8:32 pm

27, 28. Let’s temper our expectations of Mitchem for now. Everyone got super excited about Passi and she has now left the program. Granted, Mitchem was a better player out of high school and is doing very well is IVC, but going to NCAA I is still a big jump. I am hopeful she will do very well, but am concerned that if she doesn’t hit lights out in the first few matches for UH, then everyone will be on her case–excessively.

  30. LC December 2, 2014 8:56 pm

I saw Annie play at IVC last year and again in September. I think Hawai`i fans will really be pleased with her.

A six rotation player who does it all and does it well. She’s a smart player, very crafty, sees the court extremely well and mixes her shots up. Very good jump server, good passer and digger and nice slide. Granted D1 will be a little more challenging but she will adapt quickly.

I have also seen her hit from the left and right and in all honesty I could see her being a stud on the outside.

In the IVC article tonight Tom Pestolesi said this, “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a player so long, so strong and so smooth,” Pestolesi said of Mitchem, who plays all rotations for IVC. “She is just so fluid with everything she does. It is fun to watch.”

  31. warriorfan December 2, 2014 9:01 pm

Thanks for the insights on Annie, LC, the more I think about it the more I want her on the pins. We need a big terminator there, and I am very high on Maglio.
Greeley, Mitchem and Taylor on the pins next year sounds good to me.

    30. No offense to you or Passi, but I don’t remember anyone really being “super excited” about Keani Passi. I thought she would contribute as a serving sub however so I was wrong about that.

  32. karin December 2, 2014 9:09 pm

From the Molokai slide to the Mitch slide. Saw Annie in person last Fall and her best move is her foot quick slide, which she hits at a very high point (with a good set) and with power. Bown like, but then it is the CCCAA competition level.

  33. gobows December 2, 2014 10:09 pm

The Duke/Wahine volleyball game will be shown on ESPN3 at 3:00 pm Hawaiian time.

  34. warriorfan December 2, 2014 10:14 pm

Is it gonna be on OC sports as well? Because I see at UH’s site that it’s linked to OC sports website.

  35. Kazu December 3, 2014 5:10 am

    25. What time the tournament . 23. Is the IVC match on tv ? If so any start time?
Next year team looks to be very interesting with the returning players and the new recruits.

  36. Cindy Luis December 3, 2014 6:27 am

Wahine match on OC sports. not sure what channel. likely 16
the UW-UNH match on Pac12 network for those who get that.

  37. sasa December 3, 2014 6:54 am

Congratulations Adora Anae and Penina Snuka on your PAC 12 honors. Way to represent Hawaii and Kahuku High School.

  38. Wahinez4eva December 3, 2014 7:30 am

Na wahine must believe within themselves that they will win…Might not be pretty, but a win is a win…”GO BOWS”

  39. connor December 3, 2014 8:05 am

from another site: any idea who this is?

    “Digging Na Wahine @DiggingNaWahine

More from the Coconut Wireless: One Gold Medal winner at the FIVB 17-under World Championships in Mexico committed to UH yet to be verified.

  40. LC December 3, 2014 8:28 am

Found the match on ESPN 3 under Upcoming on the 5th. According to the NCAA TV schedule going to be a lot of matches on ESPN 3. A lot of these matches are going to be on the internet from several sources.

KAZZ No TV for IVC probably not even live stats.

    39) Probably fishing based on the Morgan Martin rumor is my guess, they did say not verified. I have been accused of being that person but that is false, I’m a dude (they) is a blonde girl in her mid to late 20’s.

  41. LONGs a MUST December 3, 2014 8:42 am

    ?!

  42. Wahinez4eva December 3, 2014 9:32 am

*43 Thanks for the info….Now I can schedule my plan for “Friday”.

  43. Andrew December 3, 2014 9:34 am

Hopefully if the Wahine beat Duke it is at most in four games. I think the last thing they would want is to go into the game against UW (if they beat Duke) after a long five set thriller. One can assume that UW will take care of UNH rather handily in a sweep so they will be pretty fresh for their second round match. Then again just getting past the first round in any way should be the goal.

  44. idk December 3, 2014 10:09 am

    40. lol. Owner of the diggingnawahine blog/ twitter is an old dude, not a young blonde in her 20’s…

  45. mei mei December 3, 2014 1:15 pm

57/58 I thought a few threads back… Cindy did call out LC and could of sworn that in fact was behind Diggin na wahine site… wish I could take credit for it… it’s informative and has great photos of the team… i think it’s a compliment!

  46. idk December 3, 2014 1:28 pm

mei mei i do remember that. But in this thread I have not made such claims, although I cannot say that i do not agree.

  47. Kazu December 3, 2014 2:04 pm

Since the subject of Diggin Na Wahine is up i think its a great website and i enjoy
going to it. Like 60 said its informative and the photo’s are great. So whoever is the responsible person if you’re on this blog or not, thank you and keep up the good work.

  48. idk December 3, 2014 2:09 pm

I don’t see anything wrong with the blog/twitter. I look at it here and there. I have nothing bad to say about it.

  49. Kazu December 3, 2014 2:16 pm

    Cindy
Guess you are in Seattle with the team, anything interesting going on that you want to share besides the weather being cold.

  50. hollycow December 3, 2014 3:24 pm

Oahu’s weather today was Seattle like.

  51. Butch December 3, 2014 3:25 pm

Haha. What have I walked into. I find the banter kind of funny. Like what WF said, it doesn’t take a detective.

  52. hollycow December 3, 2014 3:27 pm

Annie Mitchem was name POY in their conference for the second time.

  53. warriorfan December 3, 2014 3:32 pm

I’d be surprised if Annie isn’t the AVCA POY for junior colleges again. Her numbers this year are infinitely better than last year when she won it.

  54. LC December 3, 2014 3:37 pm

Her coach had more great stuff to say about her in the article. Sounds like she has really grown in many areas in her two years at IVC.

  55. LC December 3, 2014 3:51 pm

General general consensus seems to be that we will lose to Duke.
This is what some chick who does predictions for AVCA says.

    Hawai’i vs. Duke (Seattle, WA)
Friday, December 5, 5 PM PT
Hawai’i is not the team they have been the past few seasons. I’m honestly a little shocked they made the field of 64. Duke is athletic, driven and straight up good this season. They’ve got a few athletes that can take over, and that’s exactly what I expect to happen. Hawai’i might surprise me and challenge them a bit, but I don’t think it’s likely. They’re just too volatile this season.

  56. LONGs a MUST December 3, 2014 3:57 pm

    Hah?!

  57. LONGs a MUST December 3, 2014 4:00 pm

The BIG news in Seattle’s western end of Lake Washington (E-10 or E-11 parking lots, specifically) is that JMac’s older black Chevy Tahoe is still not as roomy as Leslie’s black 2010 GMC Yukon.

  58. LONGs a MUST December 3, 2014 4:00 pm

    .|.
Wahine ‘Caravan’ parked in the E-9.

  59. Cubicle1126 December 3, 2014 4:46 pm

it’s anarchy on this blog today …. lol

  60. warriorfan December 3, 2014 4:49 pm

I guess people forget that the last time duke went west, they got swept by Santa Clara.

  61. hollycow December 3, 2014 5:06 pm

    83. Her predictions are lame and biased, like her college play. She and McPeak are in the same mold with their views of Hawaii.

  62. LC December 3, 2014 5:09 pm

Sorry but I didn’t if I did I would have said something about whatever is there.

  63. warriorfan December 3, 2014 5:09 pm

According to Rich Kern Loxley Keala left Missouri and is going to Iowa.
I wonder if Kan is next.

  64. LC December 3, 2014 5:10 pm

83 I know who she is where did she play ?

  65. idk December 3, 2014 5:11 pm

Interesting. I wonder if it had anything to do with the other setter being the head coaches daughter. In any way, wish her the best of luck.

  66. LC December 3, 2014 5:12 pm

83 I should have said I don’t know who she is . What is her last name and where did she play ?

  67. Kazu December 3, 2014 5:24 pm

Said that UH will make the tournament but won’t get pass first round. I’ll stick to this only because they are so up and down. They had a real good match against Davis and would be nice if they could carry that energy to this week end , but seems like they play good one week and fall the next. I hope they prove me wrong.

  68. hollycow December 3, 2014 5:31 pm

    116. If you meant 111. she’s Debbie (Stadick) Kniffin, MB Iowa St 2011.

  69. LC December 3, 2014 5:40 pm

Debbie Stadick, name doesn’t ring a bell. I’ll have to go to Google to see if she’s qualified to be an expert 🙂

  70. hollycow December 3, 2014 6:13 pm

    123. Has a sister, Katie soph mb for Illinois, a starter and a much better player than she ever was at Iowa St.

  71. hollycow December 3, 2014 6:23 pm

Kniffin has no clue to the quality of women’s volleyball west of the Rocky Mountains, and more so 2,225 miles west across the pond.

  72. warriorfan December 3, 2014 6:27 pm

    124. Has a younger brother too, be nice to her, I want her brother to commit to UH warriors next year 😉

  73. hollycow December 3, 2014 6:32 pm

Who’s that good looking guy? Cindy, Tiff was on Hawaii News Now sports with comments of the match with Duke, commenting on their blocking prowess. Looking Good !

  74. hollycow December 3, 2014 6:38 pm

    wrong channel, KHON 2.

  75. warriorfan December 3, 2014 6:40 pm

oh It just hit me that she’s married to UCI’s mens volleyball head coach David Kniffin, forget it, he ain’t picking UH over UCI. darn. Was hoping for stadick/Gasman in the middle.

  76. Cindy Luis December 3, 2014 7:01 pm

    117. he told me he was going to be on with Rob. They go way back to Kailua American LL days.
He’s flying out overnight. should be in Seattle Thursday early.

  77. Cindy Luis December 3, 2014 7:03 pm

Yes, anarchy. can’t be gone for long before things get out of control.

IDK and LC please stop this ridiculousness.

  78. Cindy Luis December 3, 2014 7:10 pm

    60. see new thread.
I got in after they did. they were resting while I wrote the story for tomorrow.
then we went to practice at 630.

  79. Cindy Luis December 4, 2014 8:36 am

HC, I think Seattle’s weather was better than Oahu’s Wednesday. It was clear and sunny. a little colder at 47

  80. wildcard December 4, 2014 4:01 pm

hey whatever happened to the discussion about how Digg’n Na Wahine? i wanted to point and laugh at the ludicrous and hilarity about how that=man in white hat=lc

or so is claimed by lc to be some 20 some blonde…lol

its also amazing how idk did his detective work and determined it is by a man in a white hat.

or to said man in white hat, maybe he is this guy…blogged by the mysterious “Mr. Smith.” 😀

btw the blog itself did not sound female, the writing tone is quite evident.
