Some Top 25 upsets 8-31, Nebraska loses

Kind of giving up on pusting scores for the weekend but

Gonzaga has pushed it to 5 with Washgion. UW Set 5 15-9. wasn’t that close. Was 8-3 at one point.

AVCA site is worthless. still has Hawaii idle with Texas only playing USD

but some upsets of note from Saturday (and late Friday)

10 Nebraska lost to Auburn 3-1

13 BYU (which I knew was overrated since their MWC Player of the Year is redshirting in vb to play basketball) lost to 25. Creighton 3-1, lost to Bowling Green 3-2

14. Michigan State lost to Pacific 3-0

16. Purdue lost to No. 4 USC 3-1 (this was Friday), lost to Western Kentucky 3-2

17. Kentucky lost to 18 Florida State 3-0 (Fri), lost to Illinois 3-2

24. Wichita State lost to Arizona State 3-0

Good win for Creighton. Not a good loss by Wichita State. Just thinking RPI here, folks.

Should the Wahine win the next 2 matches they should be in the Top 10, with the loss by Nebraska.

  2. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 4:48 pm

Cindy, went to AVCA site, see what you mean. It is like trying to navigate your way through a maze. 🙂

Who’s the BYU volleyball/basketball players that is redshirting, same situation as Kalei. Basketball coach said no to volleyball this year. I’m glad Laura Beeman’s letting Kalei still play volleyball.

  5. LC August 31, 2013 5:02 pm

Go read the write up on NCAA.com and tell me what you think.

  6. vballfreak808 August 31, 2013 5:07 pm

    4. That player is Jennifer Hamson for BYU and it was her decision. She was mostly recruited for that sport so she feels she needs to help her team as much as she can. But I agree, its a good thing Beeman supports the volleyball team.

  7. bowsfan August 31, 2013 5:10 pm

I only remember UCLA’s Natalie Williams as a great volleyball and basketball player. Just googled her she won NCAA volleyball championships in 1990 and 1991, then in 2000 won a Olympic gold medal in basketball.

  8. vballfreak808 August 31, 2013 5:11 pm

The possible upset matches now are No. 8 Oregon down 2-0 and down in the third to Ohio, No. 12 UCLA tied at one set apiece with LMU, No. 18 Florida State down 2-0 to Long Beach State, and No. 20 Kansas tied at one with Arizona

  9. RedZone August 31, 2013 5:29 pm

LC must have been a Texas homer.

  10. LanaiBoy August 31, 2013 5:41 pm

Long Beach state, if it beats both Illinois and Florida State, will go a long way to bring up the RPI of the Big West. It will also return a much desired rivalry with Hawaii with high anticipation all around for the match (e.g. large crowd at the Sheriff).

  11. jmy August 31, 2013 5:57 pm

Looks like UNI lost to both Utah & Utah St…Maybe the NCAA’s love affair with UNI will end this year…or at least be on hiatus…

  12. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:18 pm

    15-14 USD, TTO, Set 1.

  13. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:23 pm

    19-17 USD, Texas TO.

  14. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:26 pm

    22-19 USD, USD TO.

  15. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:33 pm

    USD wins 1st set, 25-19.

Texas looks kind of flat, or they are in shock. Like what are you doing, we are the defending National Champion, you are suppose to just roll over to us.

  16. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:44 pm

15-9 UT, TTO. Texas starting to wake up.

  17. vballfreak808 August 31, 2013 6:44 pm

LBSU falls to Florida State in five

  18. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:49 pm

    17. vballfreak808, would that help, or hurt, the Wahine RPI?

  19. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:50 pm

    19-12 Texas. USD TO.

  20. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:51 pm

    19-15 Texas. Texas TO.

  21. jmy August 31, 2013 6:55 pm

    FSU just beat Beach…

  22. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 6:55 pm

    23-16 Texas. USD TO.

  23. Cubicle1126 August 31, 2013 6:58 pm

bowsfan — another vball/bball great was kristin folkl from stanford. she was an all-american in both sports there. most will probably remember as part of that ’96 team that defeated hawaii in the ncaa final. i know she went on to play in the WNBA after college.

  24. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 7:01 pm

Texas wins Set 2, 25-18, tied at 1 set apiece.

After this tournament Texas goes home and plays Penn St.(#2), followed by Stanford (#3), the next night.

  25. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 7:07 pm

4-0 USD, 3rd Set, Texas TO.

  26. vbfan4life August 31, 2013 7:07 pm

    btw…UCLA beat LMU in 4

  27. vbfan4life August 31, 2013 7:08 pm

Kansas also beat AZ in 4

  28. Cubicle1126 August 31, 2013 7:10 pm

it’s not just UNI that’s gotten a favorable RPI rating … UNI is out of the Missouri Valley Conference, whose teams have been rated surprisingly strong in the RPI. teams like creighton (altho they’ve moved to the big east this year), missouri st, and wichita st.

in any case, it may be a down year for UNI. wichita st was actually picked to win the MVC this year. although wichita st lost to arizona st, they may still yet end up with a good win/loss record. they should have no problem doing so against their schedule. and they’ll probably finish at or near the top of their conference.

so hawaii having wichita st on the schedule should still be a good RPI boost.

creighton too looks like it has a strong non-conference schedule, and they too should finish at or near the top of the newly realigned big east conference.

  29. Jkyoung03 August 31, 2013 7:13 pm

Live on the East Coast here. Anyone know if there are full replays anywhere online?

  30. vbfan4life August 31, 2013 7:17 pm

Also former Wahine Croson led the AZ team with 20 kills in the loss and was named to the all tournament team. Will be great to see how we handle Jane and company when she comes back to the islands

  31. vbfan4life August 31, 2013 7:19 pm

    http://www.snappytv.com/snaps/about-hawai-i-women-s-volleyball-on-hawai-i-oceanic-sports-ocsportstv_eq

That is the link that someone on VT posted for the wahine match against UT. I wasn’t able to watch the live feed either last night. Wasn’t disappointed in my decision to stay up till 1 am despite having to work today cheering on my Wahine

    Go Bows!

  32. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 7:23 pm

    19-17 USD. Texas TO.

  33. John August 31, 2013 7:23 pm

Looks like USD giving Texas all they can handle.

  34. vbfan4life August 31, 2013 7:26 pm

For UH’s sake, I really hope that Texas win this one and that Texas does well in their conference and help our RPI although USD is also a good opponent. I just think it will help us more if Texas wins.

  35. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 7:29 pm

USD wins the 3rd Set, 25-21, leads in Sets 2-1.

  36. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 7:31 pm

    34. Even if Texas loses to USD, if they beat both Penn St. and/or, Stanford, next week. The lost to USD would not mean anything, since Penn St. and Stanford, have higher RPI rankings then USD.

  37. jmy August 31, 2013 7:31 pm

Texas looks tired & out of sync…

  38. vbfan4life August 31, 2013 7:32 pm

True, but with things going the way they are right now, that is a very big if for UT. Next week i think UT is playing Penn St, Stanford and Florida. That is one crazy preseason tournament

  39. Maverick August 31, 2013 7:42 pm

I wouldn’t worry too much about a Texas loss tonite so long as the Wahine defeat UTEP and San Diego. The RPI formula reflects UH opponents’ and the opponents’ opponents strength of schedule:

    RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25)

where WP is Winning Percentage, OWP is Opponents’ Winning Percentage and OOWP is Opponents’ Opponents’ Winning Percentage (winning percentage is the proxy for strength of schedule).

Because UH plays both Texas and SD, who play eachother, its pretty much a wash whether Texas wins or loses tonite, when looked at in isolation. Key for UH is to beat both.

  40. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 7:42 pm

    13-7 Texas, USD TO.

  41. Dedicatedfan August 31, 2013 7:46 pm

    39. Especially, when it comes to Texas’s strength of schedule. They also play Penn St., Stanford, and Nebraska, before entering their conference.

  42. Maverick August 31, 2013 7:48 pm

    41. totally agree on that

  43. Cindy Luis August 31, 2013 7:50 pm

    4. BYU player was the WCC player of the year. Harrison? not the same situation as Adolpho. Player’s choice, was my understanding . and she can play volleyball as a grad student. at least that is the plan.

  44. vbfan4life August 31, 2013 7:51 pm

BYU player = Samson the 6’7″ giant

  45. Cindy Luis August 31, 2013 7:52 pm

    3. thanks for the help, VBF and everyone else for scores

  46. Cindy Luis August 31, 2013 7:54 pm

Texas in a bit of a bad rotations, setter in the front row. it’s 22-18. TO UT.
sorry, wrong thread. see the USD-UT new one.

  47. Cubicle1126 August 31, 2013 7:58 pm

maverick — agreed. important for hawaii to win against SD. it’ll help the ‘nitty gritty’ part of their schedule, when the committee will look at hawaii’s record against top 25 and top 50 RPI teams. SD has a good chance of being a top 25 RPI team, imo.

  48. Cindy Luis August 31, 2013 7:58 pm

    36. at this point them beating both Penn State and Stanford is a big question.

  49. Maverick August 31, 2013 8:05 pm

    48. I would go even farther by saying Texas beating either Penn St. or Stanford is questionable. But you never know until the final whistle.

  50. Cindy Luis August 31, 2013 9:49 pm

    5. I think it was ridiculous that they picked up the Texas SIDs rewrite which focused on Texas and not Hawaii winning

  51. AniMatsuri September 1, 2013 5:40 pm

Looks like that article is treating the Hawaii win as a minor fluke. Also kind of like “look! Barry Bonds got 5 home runs” while burying the headline that the Giants lost the game in the end.
