looking like home football games may split a couple of the early tournament with a couple tourney games to be played as singles on Saturday. biggest issue may be UCLA in the middle date.

sorry, having major track pad problems and auto correct. supposed to be s k e d
all of those teams are capable of being top 75 or top 50 rpi. which is good for hawaii. but no team looks like they’re a guaranteed top 10 or even top 25 rpi, which is worrisome. in the past oregon and ucla have been solid top 25, even top 10 rpi performers. we’ll see how they bounce back from their struggles last year (altho, with oregon even tho they struggled, they still finished in the top half of the pac-12 last year).
having 3 teams on the schedule from the pac-12 (asu, ucla and oregon) will be a good challenge on the court, but 3 teams from the same conference — any conference — can be problematic for the rpi.
i’m glad, at least, that there is ohio and st. john’s on the non-conference schedule, to give hawaii’s schedule some geographic balance. and those 2 teams will usually put up a good win-loss record.
good, not great schedule. but it is probably about right for a hawaii team that will be rebuilding this season.
For the rebuilding year they have, this is a good schedule. Some tough matches in Oregon and asu, but nothing to difficult that they can’t handle. This is not a seed favoring schedule and the only way I can see them getting a seed is if they go perfect in conference and with this schedule. But I’m excited to see Oregon play
But what I realized is there are quite a bit of Sunday matches. This means that tai won’t be able to play. Last year I only recall her not playing against San Diego. This year she will be missing quite a few
Is not playing on Sunday a requirement by the Mormon religion ? I believe Higgins is a Mormon also.
With only Adolpho graduating 2015 looks to be the payoff year, I only wonder if Dave will still be around by then.
LC no it’s not a requirement. Shoji said he’s had LDS players before but Tai was the only one who chose not to play on Sundays
6. It’s not a requirement, it just depends on how strict your views are. Just like church. You don’t have to go to be a Christian, but some people go every Sunday. Higgins played in the match against San Diego, so she won’t be sitting out

Re. 5 to be quite honest I don’t think it will matter because I think she will be coming off the bench next season.
13. I want passi to start, but knowing Dave, he has his favorites and will stick with them until he needs to change. I mean it took him the whole season to switch Nikki and tai. Let’s hope passi gets the starting spot because honestly tai hurts the team more than helps. She’s a sweet girl and maybe she can improve, but if she plays like she did last season, It won’t be pretty

as for the LDS-Sunday … it’s a personal choice from what I’ve always been told For example, Jenny Wilton would play on Sundays, younger brother Mikey chose not to. There are quite a few LDS playing NFL. and those are Sunday games.
Since October 2014 will be the 20th anniversary of the SSC Will UH have anything planned.

And I’m not trying to down tai at all. She really try’s her hardest in games and I respect that. I just felt last year, she wasn’t ready to start. Maybe this year she will be, but that will only be with improvement

brandon – i know you’re typing quickly, and it’s easy to gloss over the details … but nikki and tai never actually “switched.” nikki was always at opposite, and tai at L2. the change was in having nikki take more swings from the left and backrow, and tai more swings on the right. the real “switch” was having mendoza come in for tai in the back row instead of for nikki.
these adjustments to the lineup came at the start of november, and were likely expected, since hawaii had just lost 3 of 4 (all in 5 sets), including 2 losses on the road.
with hindsight, it’s always easy to say these changes should have happened sooner. but up until that stretch in mid-october … hawaii was winning! it’s awfully tough to make that kind of a drastic a change when things are working. the losses mid-season exposed the weaknesses, which then led to the changes. i think that’s a natural progression, rather than any kind of perceived stubbornness from shoji.
has he appeared stubborn in other situations? perhaps, yes. he has even acknowledged some of them over the years. but with the changes made to nikki and tai’s roles last season, i think they occurred at the right pace. i’m not sure nikki would have been ready right from the start of the season, for the expanded role she was given (on offense and defense) later on. expanding her role slowly and naturally was a good move.
i think joselyn robins is LDS. i do not know if she was then … but i believe she is now.
22. Apologize for the confusion. Should of been more clear about that. Looking at it, I agree with you. Dave made the move when it was the right time. But I also think he gave tai, too much chances at times. They’re were times when she was hitting negative and still
Playing and times where she just couldn’t pass. He has Kastl on the bench, and while she too hit negative at times, she was more consistent than tai when she came in. I love Dave and I know he’s an amazing coach. One of the greatest in the history of the sport, but at times I feel like he has a favorites, and will stick with them until the very end, and sometimes that proves costly. That’s why I hope he starts passi at opposite. Because from what I’ve seen her do in junior college and highschool , she’s an excellent player and for someone of her size, post a nice block. Granted that’s not division 1 she was playing in, but she has the skill for it IMO
you’ve never seen passi play in JC so lets stop making judgement calls based off of 10 seconds video clips you’ve seen online.
NOBODY was b*tchin’ when tai was playing superb against the likes of texas ucla long beach etc, get off her case. she was the right choice to start over a very inconsistent kastl. do I think she’ll be the better player to start next year? we’ll have to wait and see. greeley has yet to prove herself in college and passi has yet to prove herself in div 1
25. lol you didn’t watch the ucla game did you. Tai hot subbed out in the first set for hitting horribly. She game back in set three I believe for a little while. She had 4 kills 5 errors hitting -.067. Don’t make claims you can’t back up. At long beach tai hit .167 with 10 kills and 6 errors. She played better at home hitting. .333 I believe. She finished the season hitting .193. So no I Persoanlly don’t believe she was the best choice, come back when you actually know what her stats were. Against byu she hit -.111 and Texas she hit .248 so no she didn’t do amazing at Texas

Yes players improve over time, but she has a long way to go, her hitting percentage was one of the worst ever for a UH starter.
The really good players at elite programs come in and perform at a high level right away, hopefully that will be the case with Greeley and Passi.
btw hitting .248 against the defending national champions is pretty fricken amazing, why would you not call that stellar?
why only highlight her negative games, why don’t you point out her positive games. oh that’s right, you pick and choose what you want to believe.

She had great matches, she had very poor matches.
As for Passi, have only seen her in practice. think she is very explosive, hard serve. Don’t want to compare her with anyone else they’ve brought in from JC but many think she is in the mold of a Cubi-Otineru.
First practice is still 4 months-plus away. I’m sure it will work itself out starting then. And who knows what the freshmen will bring.
30. hitting percentage doesn’t tell the whole story. you have to consider the pass, if a player goes up on an overpass and hits long, or doesn’t get the touch.
Look at some of Hartong’s percentages. There were many games that it was low, in part due to her taking trouble sets, barely got a hand on it but it’s called an attempt.
And too bad about BYUH, is there anyway they will be able to keep their women’s volleyball team going at the d2 level?
this is why you are a blogger and coach shoji is a hall of fame coach with the most wins in ncaa history with several national championships who despite coaching a mid major university who is always up there with the UCLAs, Penn States, Texas. remember this is not mens volleyball with its 30 something teams, womens volleyball is played at practically every division 1 college, thus making recruiting the best harder with all the choices the best players have, yet he consistently puts out a highly competitive team. GO BOWS
Yes players have bad matches but it all averages out, Tai’s was just way to low. If UH wants to be top 15, all three pin hitters should be hitting well over .230. It’s not asking for too much , especially since Tai didn’t have to pass as much as Hartong.

I do see Kahakai playing DS for Taylor, Manu Olevao or Passi, but not hitting, she is just too short.
Greeley is supposed to be very advanced in the back row, I believe she played DS/libero while she was nursing an ankle her senior year of HS.

I wouldn’t be complaining. But hitting .198 is just not what UH needs. The difference is hartong still hit better numbers than tai, even when she took more swings and had more kills. I don’t think hartonf had 1 negative game the whole season. Tai had MULTPLE. People are so excited for annie mitchem and say she will start in 2015 when she comes. What’s the difference between that and passi: she wasn’t jc POY for nothing. She OBVIOUSLY has talent.

40. I’m sure that’s what people told Strickland and Kan as of more recent. Many others hit for elite teams that were “too short.” Simply put…if you got it, you got it.
If Greely and more so Taylor are passing 6 rotations, they will be out of system a lot. Just my 2 cents
45. I remember watching Passi a few years ago when she practically willed her junior college to the national championship, she was a spitfire and had some amazing digs that kept rallies going and hard hits
She will be fun but I do think UH could use a bigger block on the right. I think Taylor and Greeley are locks on the left.

48. Greeley is a good passer though, I know it’s just club and high school but I definitely see her skills transitioning to college, Like Cindy mentioned, Taylor is getting better everyday with the sand team. I do have Kahakai playing a lot but not hitting sorry.
You can improve your hitting percentage a few points over the years in college (20/30) with coaching and reps, but not from .200 to .300. Either you got it or not, that’s my take. Kanani, Emily Hartong and now Nikki are examples of this.
re. 52 Totally agreed. If you want to go far, you need the players that just have “it” from the get go.
Which brings up the topic of Passi and hitting pct. I realize that it’s JC to D1, however what was her pct. over the two years at Southern Idaho, esp. her Soph year. That’s probably the max we would expect from her at the D1 level, unless Shoji and Wong can make changes to her hitting technique that would up her killing success.
Passi hit about .280, had over 50 aces when she won avca 2 year colleges player of the year. Definitely will help with her serve IMO.
Gonna be exciting. So many new faces that may play a role right away. Greely, Kahakai, Passi (not really new). And now maybe Koelscch on the right if not Passi…Who knows what will happen lol. And then there’s the great news of Magill coming in to possible strengthen the middle. Maglio could get some time if the other two struggle…can’t wait to watch it all unfold while I pound the bambucha nacho’s cheehoo!

There were times last year when Tai just wowed the heck out of me. She was noticeably better than the previous year. Jumping higher, hitting harder. I think Shoji will start her on the right for sure. She has the playing experience over Passi. I’m wondering if her inconsistencies have more to do with the mental part of playing the game. Some players can shake off bad plays easier than others. I dunno… she’s definitely capable of improving that hitting % imho. Would love to see her do just that!

UCLA already has another setter committed in 2016, so doubt she is even looking at them.
Actually UCLA has a setter committed in 2015 and another one in 2016 and both are really good.
She has connections to ucla by playing at mizuno long beach. She is going to be heavily recruited. Usc I heard is also after her

Reading everyone’s comments, it sure seems like ginger is a stud on the beach. It’s amazing at how much there is a difference between sand and indoor. I mean she’s a great indoor player, but It seems like she has a professional career in sand
USF is overmatched. Ginger is pretty much unstoppable.
What an improvement over 1 year. I mean last year they were good, but no where this good. They’re competing with the best of the best and winning. Scott is an amazing coach and can really make this team into the number one team next year

USF is actually in their second year. Last year they only played against the nor cal schools (pacific, santa Clara, Cal, Stanford, St mary’s and Sac State)
It’s kinda like indoor when the host team is being embarrassed the GT or Live Stats suddenly has issues. 🙂

109. When TV gets around to it, it likely won’t be done one match at a time. That’s not how the format is
If they do it on campus, there will be two matches simultaneously. The only time you might get a single match is for a title match or since there are 5 teams, one match would be a single.
And it honestly looks like kahakai has amazing potential to be an OH. Yeah shes short, but she makes that up with power. She will probably play libero, but who knows. Maybe she can be like a kan.
