Mcginn’s estimate of rpi has uh at 15 after tonite’s match

  2. Cindy Luis November 30, 2013 7:30 pm

no sense worrying about it overnight.
what happens tomorrow is what matters.

  3. Cindy Luis November 30, 2013 7:33 pm

For those who are interested and not at FB, Channel 8 is showing A Tradition of Honor at 7 p.m. about the AJAs in WWII. Focus is on the nisei, many who joined the 442. Shoji’s dad was among them. His parents were in the same interment camp.

  4. Maverick November 30, 2013 7:36 pm

Not worried. Won’t be shocked if uh fails to lock up a seed. Davis loss was really bad. Northridge will be in conversation but I predict they will not get an invite. To much major conference bias.

  5. Warriorfan November 30, 2013 7:39 pm

I expect UH will probably be back in California next week, hope Im wrong though.

  6. Volleyball fan November 30, 2013 9:33 pm

Well, we can speculate all we want. Since I watch the match only online it doesn’t make that much of a difference for me. Actually the buffering is worse on local matches than in the mainland and I can’t explain why even though I live on the Big Island.

I know it’s late and maybe no one will read this. If the Wahine host the first two rounds, the only team I don’t want to see is Arizona with Jane Croson in it. For sure Dave Rubio would bring her this time. She would be highly motivated to upset Hawaii since she was suspended here last year for nearly a month. I’d hate to see this happen more than any other loss in the playoffs. Even if Hawaii plays on the road against Arizona I’d be very nervous. That’s my only wish, no pair-up with Arizona in the playoffs, either first or second round.

  7. Warriorfan November 30, 2013 9:42 pm

Arizona is the only team You don’t want?? Are you kidding, Arizona would be an easy match up, there are far more dangerous teams.

  8. oldtimer808 November 30, 2013 9:44 pm

I wouldn’t worry about playing Arizona. If anything I would think the Hawaii ladies would be motivated to beat Arizona.

  9. sharene November 30, 2013 10:01 pm

I feel that the one person who sacrificed the most over the Croson debacle was Tai. She sacrificed a year of eligibility for the team and fans so we should be supporting her more. I don’t really want to see Croson because she played the victim at the end while there was no remorse or gratitude for what Hawaii did for her.

  10. hollycow November 30, 2013 10:06 pm

    6. Volleyball fan. Croson brought the suspension upon herself for her actions off the court. The 4 week suspension is clearly outlined in the NCAA rules for her type of infraction. Oh, by the way I’m not saying, she uprighted the ship and I respect her for that.

  11. LC November 30, 2013 10:09 pm

So what do you guys think about UCSB claiming that they are the Big West Champs in spite of the fact that the Big West is calling it a Tri- Championship?

CSUN and UH have shown how classy they are by acknowledging all three schools but UCSB seems to think that winning the AQ makes them the sole Big West Champs.

  12. Tld December 1, 2013 12:08 am

11- Who cares? Let them celebrate.

I feel good about Hawaii getting to host this year. Last year you could make a plausible case of a team like Kenticky over Hawaii for a seed. You really can’t do that this year.

  13. Grammy December 1, 2013 12:26 am

They can talk all they like. Let’s see them get a win if they can. Would like to see 3 get in but feel like only 2 will make it UH and UCSB. Hope the rest of the conference catches on in scheduling and recruiting, it would make things more interesting and competitive for Wahine (as if this year wasn’t enough) Ha! Still think Wahine will rebuild and have solid returnees, recruits and redshirts, so not that worried about rebuilding year. Seven Solid Seniors will be missed but are not done yet so may last into tourney with lucky bracketing. Go Wahine!

  14. Hot December 1, 2013 1:14 am

    9. How did Olevao “sacrifice” a year of eligibility? Nobody comes to a college program wanting to redshirt. It’s a mutual decision between coach and player, understanding that it could be beneficial to the program and/or the player. I doubt that Olevao feels bad about playing last year. I bet if you ask most players if they’d like to redshirt or play, they’d choose the latter. I’m not understanding the “sacrifice” part. Any freshman who is not immediately needed is a redshirt POSSIBILITY. They needed Olevao last year, whether it was due to Croson’s absence or because they wanted another option on the right in addition to Goodman/Kastl, so she played. End of story.

  15. airinfall December 1, 2013 11:35 am

    11. In typical UCSB fashion, their self-proclamation shows their character. Probably the team with the worst gamesmanship in the conference.

  16. Warriorfan December 1, 2013 11:39 am

Let the dink queens celebrate they are still gonna get killed in the first round!!!

  17. Makule December 1, 2013 12:05 pm

    Agree.

  18. Brandon December 1, 2013 12:12 pm

    14. Becayse she was expected to red shirt. She went over half the season not playing and since croson got suspended it forced her to play. She had to come in late. That’s how she wasted a year of eligibility.

  19. Brandon December 1, 2013 12:12 pm

Ucsb will be lucky to make it past round one. No way will they pass round 2

  20. OrbitalripZ December 1, 2013 12:12 pm

Re: 1 Glad you used the word “estimate,” for it’s been pointed out on VTalk several times that all NCAA D-1 sports “have some sort of penalty/bonus calculation they add to the standard calculation which aren’t made public,” and even John McGinn chimes in that he hasn’t yet figured out what these penalty/bonus additions are.

Thus I repost part of what I said a few days ago: Within minutes after the last match is played on November 30, the NCAA’s super computers will have the last regular-season RPI available to the NCAA Volleyball [Selection] Committee.

To end conspiracy theories, the Committee should release online to the public this last RPI on Saturday. There is no reason for keeping it secret until after Selection Sunday.

    ————
~~ From the Who Cares! Department ~~

Since the Nov. 25 RPI, in which Hawai’i was #11, the Wahine’s non-conf. opponents played 18 matches, resulting in 9 wins and 9 losses. Combined with the fact that the UH played against the Big West’s two bottom dwellers, there’s little question that the Bows’ last RPI of the regular season will drop to “bubble” territory: 13 ~ 16.

    I see two scenarios:

1 — Hawai’i will be seeded (and thus host) and the Big West will thus consist of a contingent of 2 teams.

2 — A trade-off: We (the Committee) will give you (Big West) 3 teams. In exchange you won’t complain about Hawai’i not being seeded. And they (another BCS conference) won’t complain that one of their at-large bids went to you, since in lieu of that at-large team they are getting another top 16 seed.

3 — I don’t see a third scenario, in which Hawai’i is seeded, and the BWC tri-champions all get to go to The Dance. If Walt Disney studios was producing this movie, yes. But you have the Wicked Witch in charge and Na Wahine completely at her mercy.

  21. Not an Expert December 1, 2013 12:36 pm

#19 If your scenario #2 is something that could happen or may had happen before then the selection process is flawed. If this ever is brought to the Big West commissioner this will be the most opportune time for the leagues like the BW to file suit against the NCAA for collusion and discrimination.

  22. Brandon December 1, 2013 12:44 pm

The comittee favors certain conferences. It’s obvious that they do, but there is nothing we can do. If hawaii gets seeded great, but if not oh well! We just need to cheer our girls on no matter what

  23. setaone December 1, 2013 12:49 pm

Hasn’t the show been earlier in the day in the past? Like around noon HST?

  24. vbfan December 1, 2013 12:54 pm

There is a wahine basketball game this afternoon so hopefully they can interview Shoji at halftime and get his reaction to the brackets.

  25. LC December 1, 2013 1:04 pm

I said this once before. If they don’t host they have no one to blame but themselves. If you lose to three BW teams who had crappy RPI’s at the time then you pay for it. Suck it up and go do it the hard way.

  26. Warriorfan December 1, 2013 1:17 pm

    24. Agreed, horrible losses to Davis and the dink queens of UCSB (at home no less) really cost them.

I just hope the NCAA does not send UH to UW or USC for first/second rounds. I’d rather face them in the sweet sixteen, so I am hoping for San Diego, , Kansas( a joke if they host), Marquette (complete joke if they host), Duke or Wisconsin.

  27. Brandon December 1, 2013 1:35 pm

    25. I rather go to Marquette. It’s completely idiotic that they will host just because they scheduled tough opponents out of conference.

  28. Andrew December 1, 2013 1:59 pm

If you really think about it, even though Hawaii of course no doubt deserves a bid, the committee technically doesn’t even have to give them one. That would be the ultimate screw over though..

  29. Andrew December 1, 2013 2:00 pm

I think they get sent to USC or Washington for the first two rounds

  30. Cindy Luis December 1, 2013 2:17 pm

    23. wahine bkb game at 5 p.m. Selections show at 430, will be done before 5. Doubt if Shoji will still around for halftime to be interviewed. OC Sports might send someone over to watch the selection show with the team.

  31. Cindy Luis December 1, 2013 2:18 pm

    22. yes the show has been on earlier. think I remember that it was at 10 a.m. HST at one point.

  32. OrbitalripZ December 1, 2013 2:20 pm

    (IMHO) The Brackets will be:

    Nebraska Regional: Seed 1 Texas
Illinois Regional: Seed 2 Penn St
Southern California Regional: Seed 3 Washington
Kentucky Regional: Seed 4 Missouri or Florida

If Hawai’i is seeded, it will likely fall in the Southern California Regional, thus it will be Seed 14.

If Hawai’i is not seeded, the Pacific South and Pacific North (which is UH’s new region) will have at least 4 seeded teams & thus 4 subregional hosts — Washington, Stanford, USC, and San Diego. But all 4 will not be in the Southern California Regional bracket.

If unseeded, hope Hawai’i finds it way to the Kentucky Regional bracket.

  33. Cindy Luis December 1, 2013 2:30 pm

Brandon, Manu-Olevao red-shirted for the first 14 matches of the season. Wahine played 30. so it wasn’t over half. Agree, tho, that she would have benefited from a full year, as Vorster did.
It was her decision to burn the redshirt year at that point.

  34. max13 December 1, 2013 2:36 pm

Granted the committee has found a way to screw Hawaii over in the past, I can’t see them doing it this time around. I don’t think Hawaii will be seeded lower than 13, despite having a RPI projected at around 15. There were too many teams near and around Hawaii in the RPI that lost this past week (Kansas, Wisconsin, Creighton, Duke, Colorado State). These are the only teams (+ San Diego) I see being seeded in favor of Hawaii. Performance towards the end of the season is a criteria the committee uses to evaluate seeds and considering Hawaii went 8-2 its last 10 and avenged 2 of those loses during that span, has a head-to-head win against Creighton, and has beaten the #1 RPI team (a claim none of those teams can make).. I think we’re ok.

  35. Cindy Luis December 1, 2013 2:36 pm

    11. As the AQ they are the champions and that is how it will be noted when the ncaa sends out the release on teams selected. Besides, it’s the media department, not the team, that put that up.

  36. Brandon December 1, 2013 2:37 pm

Ahh I see. all I remember it was almost half the season. Thanks for clearing it up tho Cindy!

  37. max13 December 1, 2013 2:38 pm

Forgot to mention only other team I see being seeded in favor of Hawaii is Florida State.

  38. Maverick December 1, 2013 4:06 pm

    20. There is one more possibility, a cynical one. Two BWC teams get in, and neither hosts. Northridge stays home.

  39. jake December 1, 2013 4:23 pm

Per VT discussion with an insider, the selection committee uses RPI but now considers the AVCA coaches poll and Pablo…
i’m feeling good about Hawaii hosting 1/2 now as we count down…..

  40. Cubicle1126 December 1, 2013 4:42 pm

jake – as a clarification … the ncaa’s championship manual removed the language that prohibited the use of outside polls and rankings. so the committee is now free to consult with those polls, like avca poll and/or pablo. but it doesn’t necessarily mean they will.

but i agree — here’s hoping that they do, b/c it will bode well for hawaii hosting!

  41. Andrew December 1, 2013 4:56 pm

Some of these seedlings and at large bids are a joke. Illinois is seeded which 14 losses.

  42. Maverick December 1, 2013 5:01 pm

    41. clearly a nod to their hosting a regional…bias again

  43. Cindy Luis December 1, 2013 5:06 pm

all three Big West teams in. UH, CSUN, UCSB

  44. Cindy Luis December 1, 2013 5:06 pm

See new thread, was busy with our breaking news.
