Rewinding the UH-UCLA match
Certainly a very good win for Hawaii tonight. Think the concern was the potential letdown for the Wahine after such an emotinal high of last night.
Be interesting to see the poll Monday with all the upsets.
Thought they had a nice game plan on Lowe. She was hitting .000 through Set 2. ended up 7-5-20. We know how UH traditionally does against left-handers. UCLA hit 169.
Reeves finally got going 8-1-20. Looks a lot like her mom who also played for the Bruins in the 80s: Jeanne Beauprey.
UH outblocks UCLA 9-7. The Bruins ran a pretty slow offense and allowed the Wahine to get a lot of touches. just watching both Hartong and Adolpho focus on their timing to go up on the block was impressive.
Wahine with a 32-24 edge in digs, Longo with 11. and, as someone pointed out, very nice set distribution by Uiato. Wahine hit .304.
Taylor 6-4-12 but some key kills.; Vorster 7-1-9; Manu-Olevao 4-5-15; Hartong 15-4-33, 5-0-9 in Set 3, 3 aces, 1 BS, 3 BA; Adolpho 7-1-12, 1 BS, 4 BA; Long 1-0-1 with the match-ender from the right; Kastl 4-0-9.
It was 86 minutes of consistant play by Hawaii, as reflected by the set scores. Another good finish for the second straight night;
It was 15-15. UH closes it 10-3.
Bruins with 1 ace, 6 SEs; Wahine 5 aces, 9 SEs; UH served very tough. UCLA’s passing was horrid, balls flying all over the court.
Arena cleared out and the AC is working well. It did get hot in here for a bit. Crowd was great.

This match will prove once and for all, the Wahine is the real deal. Monster match for Adolpho and Vorster once again. Dave might take a closer look at Kastl; she makes very few errors and comes through with some solid hits when needed….also passes well. What an impressive win over the Bruins. GO BOWS.
Great weekend! What a great job the TEAM, the staff, and the fans have done over the last two weeks! It’s always good fun to see the bows playing the best teams in the country!! Cindy-in your update regarding the sellout, there was mention of the 2011 regional sellout and four others. Do you know the four others? What years and against who. Seems like we have had more than 6 total sellouts! Keep it up BOWS!
Scary thought: Last year’s Cal team is this year’s UCLA team. Hope not, but if they don’t address their setting and passing issues, don’t expect an RPI bump.
6. Re , they have problems on the outside too, Lowe can’t be their only effective pin hitter although Reeves played well against UH.

Whew, thought I was having a hot flash. Ha, ha! Really, can’t beat a full house and totally engaged crowd to lift Wahine game. I do want to see a total balanced team effort from this team, but understand that rotational aspect and in and out nature of subs works against that kind of game performance. I think that if they can find and play “perfect” game before thay reach NCAA, they will be able to refrence what it takes to defeat the game plans set up to stop Emily or Nikki or middles ’cause you already knows that’s what coaches are thinking. Hawaii is beatable if you stop Hartong and touch middles attacks. I am confident that we’ve got the talent and the coaching staff to design/execute a winning game plan. Belive! Go Wahine!
@ LC. (11). heh heh…you caught that too, huh? I like Jim a lot and he’s one of the icons during the games from way back. But unfortunate, we can’t compete with age. He’s still pretty sharp though.
Texas beat Stanford in 4…I guess SC is the new number 1…
NO way, Texas deserves to be number 1. USC should be number 1 when they actually beat someone of worth.
Happy for the rpi boost texas will give UH, now hope they and San Diego run the table in their conference.
I actually won’t be surprised if Texas, San Diego and Hawaii all find themselves in the final four come December, I was not impressed with Stanford at all.
the match against ucla is what happens when the other hitters show up. hartong, of course, will still take the bulk of the swings, but the other hitters were involved and putting their chances away when given them.
both middles showed up. adolpho is so strong on the slide. and the connection between vorster and uiato seemed to improve as the match went on.
taylor still had some freshman errors, but she had some monster kills!
olevao struggled, but kastl stepped in and did a solid job. she helped steady out the passing so that hawaii could go to the middle as much as it did.
Cheering for San Diego who’s playing at home this Friday against #1 USC.

Now that San Diego game would be one I would like to see.
I was happy with the way our block showed up these past 2 matches. Add to that our passing and digging. And yes Kastl did a nice job. I also saw more energy out of Jade.

UH actually traveled leaving the friendly confines of Klum (if you can believe it).
I’m a big Karrie T-P fan; she went OFF in the five set loss to the future NCAA WVB Champions.
Toni Nishida also played the best that she’s ever played.
**Inclusuive of the fact that she used to play for Pearl City; they/she were the only competitors to UH Lab, time and again in the 50th state, those years of Jr. Bows’ dominance.

6. don’t think UCLA will be this year’s Cal. But even watching them Thursday wasn’t all that impressed. Lowe can go off and I think Sealy will address his other problems. Too good a coach not to.
But you have to give Hawaii some credit for disrupting UCLA’s passing with some really good serving.
5. you are right. there have been at least 14. what I had looked at was Largest attendance listed. top 5 are 10,300 sellouts.
15. the way the poll likely will work tomorrow is USC as the last unbeaten of the top 3 will move up to No. 1. Don’t see Texas moving from No. 6 to No. 1 just because they beat Penn State. If the coaches pay attention. they would see Texas barely beat San Diego in 5. soooo

Anyway, another away game that stands out for me (not that I was there in attendance, yet it’d been my estimation that UH was going to be blown out by on already VERY established Cardinal program–risen–into then/now the creme dela creme of NCAA WVB…what steadfastness).

Lot of factors played into Miyashiro’s decision to go to UW, including her desire to be a setter. UH didn’t need another at that point. There was some discussion about libero but they had already committed the libero spot to Ka’aihue. didn’t need 2 in the same class.
The “ramblings” about Tama, being from the Seattle as I am, are really two-fold.
I know the U-Dub staff. Could tell you about things but that would be gossip.

As for UH finally ‘playing away from Klum”… when they played in Klum, the wren’t making money. Plus until 1984 they were an independent, no conference.
after the arena opened, there was no reason to go on the road early because they made a lot money by staying home. that was, in part, an athletic department decision.
They went to Nebraska for a single match that one year because, I believe, it was $10,000 guarantee.
I ALWAYS have known that you know plenty. It’s never been a Q of that. Heck, much of what I know–going WAY back to the mid-80s–came from reading you and Ann’s work. Mahalo for that.
